What I never understood about Nagihiko's whole backstory and character is why his family has to be a nihonbuyo academy for girls which does in fact have male and female dancers and are open to everyone instead of making the obvious choice of making the Fujisaki clan a kabuki (more specifically an Onnagata/Oyama exclusive) academy. (They even call the dancing style on the anime Onnagata no Buyo which is even more?? Just make them Onnagatas //sob)
It fixes the whole 'I had to crossdress because its only for girls' plot hole because Onnagata are specifically male dancers that have to crossdress and learn femenine mannerisms to perform, plus, thanks to the prohibition of female Kabuki dancers in the Sakoku era, it makes sense that even if Nagihiko had a younger sister, he'd still have to cross dress.
PLUS PLUS HEAR ME OUT
In his performance for that one episode in which he debuts as Nagihiko for the first time + when we see him perform in Party! (Ep 7) he is PERFORMING FUJI MUSUME AKA ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS ONNAGATA PIECES IN KABUKI HISTORY
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The reason why Nadeshiko is wearing different clothes in this performance btw is because the Fuji Musume piece's most famous feature is the quick change of costumes that is done throughout the dance.
Also if you don't believe me, the Poster Amu sees has Fuji Musme (藤娘) as the featured dance!
Tumblr media
ALSO UH FUN FACT but Fuji Musume is the story of a young girl who becomes 'drunken with love' and it's meant to represent the purity and innocence of her love UGH and I wonderif that represents Nagihiko/Nadeshiko's love for Amu and UGH I love this character sm
Anyways if you're not into my ocs just skip this part but UH
I guess this is a ripe time to remind y'all that Yuu in my ocverse is actually cousins with Nagihiko AND i have changed their family from a matriarcal nihonbuyo school to a patriarcal kabukibuyo school because it makes more sense mwah. Nagi's mom is still a dancer and met his father through dance since kabuki and dance generally are very closely linked so I wouldnt put it past the Fujisaki household to have their kids go to only-girls nihonbuyo classes to nail in that ~femenine vibe~ they aparently want in Nagihiko's backstory.

on the topic of men in magical girl shows being treated worse than women in shonen... mot only is it not true but a lot of men in magical girl shows are actually nuanced, full fledged characters with their own personalities and characters arcs.
mamoru chiba may be the poster boy for the male damsel in distress in magical girl shows but he's actually very helpful to sailor moon, supporting her both emotionally and in fights and doing everything he can to be useful to her. he even had a whole arc in the dream arc about wanting to be more useful to usagi.
syaoran li starts out as a rival to sakura and proves to be quite capable, even collecting a few cards on his own. he slowly becomes friends with her and eventually, her boyfriend. in clear card he's a very loving boyfriend and does everything he can to support sakura and make her happy.
touya kinomoto is sakura's brother who knows about her powers but doesn't tell her. he watches sakura from a distance and protects her in any way he can.
yukito tsukishiro is the alternate form of yue. he only knows about this near the end of the sakura card arc. but even then he's a good character with a full fledged personality. also he and touya are such a good couple.
masaya aoyama puts on a facade of the perfect, popular boy but deep down he's cynical and hates humanity because of what they're doing to the planet. but him meeting ichigo and spending time with her opens his heart. he also takes on the role of blue knight to protect ichigo.
shugo chara has many magical boys. tadase hotori, kukai souma, kairi sanjou, and nagihiko fujisaki are all just as important as the girls and they have their own character arcs. even ikuto is quite a complex character, that is if you take away his whole deal with amu.
princess tutu has just as many main male characters as female characters, probably even more and they're all extremely important to the story. mytho is the prince from the story drosselmeyer wrote who went into the real world after he shattered his heart to seal away the raven. fakir is a descendent of drosselmeyer and starts out mean but eventually grows to care about ahiru and plays a very important role in the finale. drosselmeyer is the driving force behind all the events in the series.
the precure franchise, although it did some of its male characters dirty (*cough pikario and takumi cough*) also has some great male characters.
seiji sagara is megumi's childhood friend who finds out about her being a precure. even though he doesn't have any powers he does his best to support her and her friends.
prince kanata is the catalyst behind haruka becoming a precure and he's a capable fighter who does anything to protect his kingdom and supports the girls whenever he can.
henri wakamiya is the first ever male cure (although he's not on the main team) and gives a wonderful lesson about gender expression.
masato aikasi starts out being very conservative but after his heart is opened by henri, he starts to learn that gender roles are stupid and even stands up for his sister against their grandfather.
and now we have cure wing, who is going to he the first main male cure in the franchise.
even though there are male characters in magical girl shows who are either done dirty or quite useless, a lot of the time the authors actually develop the male characters just as much as the female characters.
and this should be an example because if these shojo magical girl authors can put just as much care into their male characters as their female characters, then what's stopping these male shone authors from doing the same to their female characters? shonen being aimed at boys and the authors not knowing how to write women is not an excuse. if shojo authors just said they don’t know how to write men, they would get laughed at. so why is it seen as an acceptable excuse for male shonen authors.
and even if there is a lack of men in these magical girl shows, so what? men have like 148293 shonen anime with generic male protagonist #738383 who beats up bad guys and gets a love interest whose only purpose is either the damsel in distress or fanservice bait. let us have a genre made for women by women. it won't hurt you.

I’m rereading Shugo Chara (it’s been years and the nostalgia I feel is immense) and I’ve got to be honest…
I think Amu and Ikuto is the funniest ship in the whole world.
Like, they just like each other. They like spending time with each other. Amu is genuinely comfortable around him until he starts flirting, then she’s mostly just kind of exasperated. All of Ikuto’s interactions with her are based on cats. He brings her food (human can not hunt for themself) and he lays on her (human is the most comfortable pillow) and he teases her (human must be kept on their toes). Like, he’s just a big ol’ cat and I love it.
But also, the manga is fucking hilarious.
When Kukai is graduating and everyone’s saying goodbye and Tadase asks “When I’m in trouble, can I talk to this picture I have of you?” When they’re all talking about what happens around springtime and Ikuto casually says “Being in heat. Because we’re cats.” and Amu’s respons is “Can he say that in this manga?” And Sensei… “Why are you still teaching here?” “I do have credentials.”
Ikuto is the funniest character. He brings cookies because he broke Amu’s tart. He brings ice cream because Utau dropped Kukai’s ice cream (and maybe Amu’s? I’m unclear) ((how did he even know that that happened? Does he have a sixth sense, “Someone just ruined my human’s meal. I have to fix this immediately.”)) He always shows up with a bag of food and just drops it on Amu, then leaves. He came here for one reason and one reason only, and it was to drop off food, bye.
My favourite part of the manga is Nadeshiko/Nagihiko. I love Amu’s comment early on “Nadeshiko changes so fast!” I love Temari, who just repeats “my kimono will get dirty.” And when they’re crawling through the vent or whatever, and Temari is crawling while still covering her face with her sleeve and says “my kimono is getting dirty.” Hilarious. I love Temari so much.
I love that Nadeshiko is Amu’s best friend. They are besties. The extra where Nagihiko breaks out of his house to spend time with Amu? Perfection. Nagihiko holding Amu’s hand, and when she points it out to him, he just goes “Oh yeah. I forgot I’m different today.” I love Nagihiko, he’s the best. The whole explanation is totally wild and honestly baffling, but I love Nagihiko and his weird ass family all the same.
I liked the show a lot as a kid, and I liked the manga even more. I think Amu and Ikuto are adorable. I think it’s funny that the characters don’t act like any elementary school students I’ve ever met (including the ones who were in elementary school with me). I like that Kukai is everyone’s favourite, and he’s just so chipper. I like Tadase’s wish being to conquer the world, and everyone agreeing to help him with it because “It’s fun :)” I especially like that Amu is consistently and constantly judging the capes.
Maybe it’s nostalgia colouring my view. Maybe I’m biased because it made me laugh a couple times. Maybe I just like Ikuto and Amu being comedic foils to each other. Whatever it may be, I really enjoy the manga. Would I recommend it? Yes. Would I recommend it if you’re going to be pissed by the age gap? No.
(“The age gap is so problematic!” But have you considered that they are funny?)

shugo chara really is all about embracing change and growing up and discovering your true self and spreading hope, love, and compassion to everyone around you no matter what... it's definitely one of the most thoughtful, poignant magical girl series out there and it deserves way more praise than it gets

The three heirs of the Fujisaki Family🪻
Welcome to Ghost's unhinged little multiverse (ghostverse for short) and their first family introduction. Izumi and Nagihiko are characters from the kabuki phantom and shugo chara! Respectively, but I've just given them my own little twist so i can link them to my lil universe hehe
Backstory of the Fujisakis is down below! Minor spoilers for the kabuki phantom pertaining Izumi's past
The Fujisaki (藤咲) clan is a long-standing Kabuki troupe that resides in Tokyo. Known for their draconian training regiments and top-tier Onnagata performers, they've become part of the Kabuki elite.
Despite that, the family fractured into two distinct factions relatively recently, which then poses the question about inheritance.
Two generations ago, the first-born son of the Fujisakis, Hiroshi (寛) came out as gay and was subsequently disowned due to his refusal to enter an arranged marriage to produce a heir.
After being kicked out, Hiroshi started up from the bottom and created his own troupe in defiance, eventually gathering enough funds to even open his own theater.
In the meantime, Hiroshi's younger brother, Nagisa (凪咲) became the head of the family and had two sons; Ataru (陽) and Kamui (奏紫). Ataru, the oldest, was slated to succeed his father, but at 17 he broke down due to the stress and ran away, eventually being taken in by his uncle Hiroshi and building a life for himself outside of the stage.
Ataru would later marry and have two children; Kotonoha (言葉) and Yuu (夕), who would grow up with a minimal knowledge of their father's side of the family aside from tidbits they heard from their great-uncle, which babysat them from time to time.
Unfortunately, though, right when Yuu was a toddler, Ataru got laid off and his family fell into poverty. This forced him to swallow his pride and once again enter into contact with his father, whom agreed to pay for his children's schooling if Yuu started Kabuki training as the next heir.
Yuu was a bright kid, and from a very young age he knew the situation his family was at. So even though he despised practice, he kept silent through his elementary school years.
Once Ataru got back on his feet, he gave the option for Yuu to quit Kabuki, an offer he quickly and gladly took on. This decision would drive the rift further between the family.
With now three heirs having rescinded their roles, the only viable head before Nagisa would die was Kamui; his second and youngest son.
Kamui was already married and had a singular son; Nagihiko (凪彦). Due to the small age difference, Nagihiko and Yuu managed to practice together for a couple of years before Yuu quit, and even though both sides of their family hate each others's guts, the two cousins have actually become quite close, bonding over their shared experiences under their grandpa.
Hiroshi's theater would eventually become quite famous, and with his training as Onnagata, he eventually started accepting apprentices. His most talented prodigée would end up being Izumi (いずみ), a teen actor who ran away from home and the spotlight as soon as he turned 18. His story endeared him and reminded him of his own family struggles. Given Izumi's desire to fully cut contact from his old life, Hiroshi offered to give Izumi his surname for legal documents so he could start over on a clean slate.
Since Hiroshi has no children of his own, Yuu was slated to be his successor, but given his disinterest on Kabuki, Hiroshi eventually decided on giving his Onnagata title to Izumi if Yuu doesn't change his mind. Kotonoha, Yuu's sister, is also slated to inherit half the property alongside Yuu, but given that women don't traditionally take part on acting, she'll mostly take care of the business part of his legacy.
Despite him being no longer recognized by the main family branch as the heir of the family, Yuu wears a Juzu bracelet that has been passed down through generations as a heirloom. Nagihiko holds a replica of said bracelet.
