author reclist: toomuchplor

a few months ago, when i was coming back to fandom in earnest, i came across this post from @sitp-recs. explorations of faith, divinity and worship are some of the tropes i find most furiously compelling, so i had to jump into o come, all ye faithful as soon as possible. i did, only to fall headfirst in obsessive, wide-eyed, awe-inspired love. @toomuchplor writes a desire that's both slow and heady, relentless and gentle, all-consuming and a rest stop to breathe easy. i couldn't help but read through (most of) their catalogue in a matter of days. this author's thematic range is astonishing, their characterisations lead to delicious stories where two headstrong, wilful and perennially longing men crash, fumble and rush into achingly sweet love and burning lust.

what always spools me in with plor, though, is their use of circumstance, especially in longer fics. every fic has a premise iron-clad in its fascinating, inventive, raw and exciting potential. more often than not, i've found them doing something i haven't encountered before in fandom at all, or reworking a popular trope in ways that make you go, 'oh. oh, i never thought about that happening, how did i never think of that happening?'

i've loved everything i've read from them, but here's a selection of some of my absolute favourites that i'll be going back to, over and over:

i've got a beautiful feeling (everything's going my way) (E, 3.5k)

“I’ve got such a boner,” Harry says, voice scratchy, just slitting his eyes open now, turning his head on his pillow to face Draco. “Oh, lovely, good morning to you, too,” Draco says.

a slice of life like the plush inside of a ripe mango— a love that's mature, constant, beating like a strong heart. the filthy, hilarious, gorgeous portrait of harry and draco's married life— the familiarity of sex, the rush of wanting each other as much as ever.

o come, all ye faithful & all the angels cry amen (E, ~22k total)

In which Draco finds faith in the church, and Harry finds faith in Draco.

an achingly tender rumination on faith as love, and love as worship. one of the most heartbreaking and realistic depictions of the reckoning it would take for harry potter to accept he has found refuge and rest in draco malfoy's arms. i loved the non-chronological, dual timeline storytelling— that particular form works so well when there's a taut, twinging thread holding both narratives together, and harry and draco's gravitational attraction to each other, fraught in parts and at peace in others was the perfect anchor.

time and too much don't belong together (E, 23k)

A Malfoy family heirloom gets triggered in a raid, binding Draco Malfoy to Ron Weasley; neither of them is too chuffed about this.

a masterclass in revelations. the reader can tell, from the outset, there's more here than meets the eye. the reader can also guess, from the beginning, what the dynamic in the shadows is. tense and breathtaking writing, you know what's coming, but every time you're fed a morsel you cling to it with both hands. one of the most inventive takes i've seen on the lust potion/spell trope in this fandom, and done in a way that makes you want to see it over and over and over again.

polar night/midnight sun (E, 54k)

Harry travels to arctic Norway on the trail of dragon egg poachers, only to find he's been assigned to work alongside the only NorMagPol Auror north of sixty: one Draco Malfoy. It's been ten years since they crossed paths, and Malfoy isn't exactly what Harry expected or remembered. For one thing, he wears a lot more hand-knits? When a sudden winter storm strands the pair, unable to use magic to rescue themselves, they take shelter in a one-room Norwegian hytte.

exquisitely atmospheric. uses extenuating circumstances in some of the most delicious ways. builds character and interpersonal dynamics through those small little elements of storytelling (draco in knitwear! brynjar the dog! the mundane pillowtalk! the quirks of their miscommunication!) that go the longest way in having characters leap off the screen into your personal space. also the sex in this is absolutely mind-blowing, i was hooked on every glorious word.

truth to materials (co-written by lately) (E, 58k)

In which Harry learns to appreciate art and other pleasures of the flesh.

decadent. in premise, in language, in characterisation, just absolutely decadent. this version of harry, bewildered and captivated by draco's out-there artistry is one of the funniest and most endearing i've encountered in fic, ever. his head, so full of determination and good intentions and terribly flawed and completely believable thinking, was such a brilliant place to set this fic. and draco— lord. you know that moment of transition, that click, when a piece of art goes from something untouchable and distant to a soulful thing you keep close because you recognise it as a cultural, emotional response? this fic felt like a literary project trying to capture that click, except it's a shift in perspective about a person. draco— the cool, untouchable, subversive artist who becomes irrevocably, warmly, achingly human.

probationary action (E, 63k)

As part of the terms of the probationary contract, DRACO LUCIUS MALFOY shall submit for inspection his WAND on the last day of every month, such inspection to be carried out by a duly registered and fully qualified AUROR in the employ of the MINISTRY OF MAGIC, and such inspection to include a PRIORI INCANTATEM spell to ensure that no PROHIBITED MAGICS as heretofore described have been practised by the aforementioned probationer.

*incoherent screaming*. a fic that starts with a premise so lighthearted and filthy that you think it's going to be a long, kinky fic about two rather hilariously perverted men getting it on, except it also gets into some of the most resonant discussions of post-war revenge tactics and human rights neglect i've ever read. the dynamic between harry and draco is simultaneously so light and so weighted, this is a fic that holds you down and keeps you there till you're done.

in conclusion: an entrancing author, a gift of a writer. i can't wait to see what else they have in store for this fandom.

[useless technical shinfo: i used a backstitch and a satin stitch, plain white cotton fabric, five different shades of thread and a 25cm hoop for this. all together this took about 13 hours]

A very joyful birthday full of wonderful things, my darling @ohdrarry!! Thank you for being just one of the most beautiful, coolest people I know and thank you for hearing me complain that one time I got seriously angry hahahaha. I hope you like this little treat!

I always have a hard time explaining why one of my favourite ever fics has one of the most tragic ends I've ever read, but what can I say? Hephaestiions is very, very good at angst. I think the most beautiful thing about EBYT is the weight that all the little details give the tragedy. The mundanity amongst the extraordinary. A crumbling relationship, miscommunication, the loss of a child, suicide — all of it portrayed through the little things: worrying about the pillows on someone's literal deathbed, a wedding ring being placed on a table, a perfect cup of coffee.

And then, there's the Master of Death and the Death component of this fic that just takes it to the next level. The POV in this is superb and the way we watch it all unfold knowing that there is no other way for it to end than the way it does end is what makes it so, so special.

I don't have enough words to describe it so I'll just say that if you can handle the tags, you're in for an incredible reading experience.

tamasha ( circus ) : boy meets girl, in corsica. they decide to not reveal their real names or personalities. a spectacular drama proceeds to take place, as this temporary couple goes on an adventure like no other. time changes everything for this love story.

so this is like not mainstream & ppl consider this a flop (the director said it’ll take ppl 2 years to understand the movie) but when u watch it it’s more than just a film. it’s an amalgamation of beautiful, sad, angry, dull, lovely, frustrated and funny moments put together which literally make it a roller coaster ride, with its own highs and lows. songs r super fun + kinda boney and clyde-ish ☺️☺️ “let’s do nothing but lie about ourselves” but you’ll see the frustrations everyone feels with work and life tied together. iM NOT LYING WHEN I SAY THIS HITS U RIGHT IN THE HEART, MORE DEEPER THAN THE HEART + it’s like u meet a stranger in a different country and suddenly ur involved with them !!! “what happens in corsica, stays in corsica!” this movie will literally change ur life im so pissed it wasn’t a hit fbsndbdn (cinematography is bOMB)

Hello PS! How are you? I just got done with watching Ipkknd and lmao it feels like I'm done with life, I get this hollow feeling lol that you get when you watch something great and have nothing else to watch. I was wondering if you have any other Indian drama recs?

Hahahah omg I know the feeling well. Congratulations on completing the serial! I honestly don't think anything else truly lives up to IPKKND. It occupies a unique place. I will welcome you to the #EndlesslyRewatchingIPKKNDClub in anticipation of you simply starting again :)

However, here are some thing to consider if you’re looking for new shows:

If you like the vibe of IPKKND in terms of an anti-hero and an every-gal, then other 4Lions shows may be of interest. They’re all based on the same template and many IPK fans also liked Ishqbaaz for example, or Qubool Hai or Geet. Other shows that capture this vibe are Rangrasiya (starring Sanaya Irani), Mann Ki Awaaz Pratigya, Ek Duje Ke Vaaste, and Jodha Akbar.

However, none of these shows are as tightly plotted or as enjoyable (in my view) as IPKKND. Qubool Hai in particular gets lost in its subplots and side characters, Jodha Akbar has like four amazing tracks and the rest is mediocre at best, and Rangrasiya felt like an off-brand IPKKND. I watched a lot of Pratigya but I wouldn’t describe it as satisfying. Ek Duje Ke Vaaste captured my interest for ages, I even wrote fanfiction for it. 

Qubool Hai season 2 (with Sanam and Aahil) is at times a shot-for-shot retelling of IPKKND but it didn’t hold up to a rewatch last year. My advice is to just watch Episode 426 to see our favourite kidnapper Rocky up to shenanigans as usual and skip to Episode 429 for a song sequence that still haunts my dreams.

I reckon web series are where it's at. Check out Tanhaiyan (starring Barun Sobti and Surbhi Jyoti), The Married Woman, and maybe ASUR (starring Barun Sobti!). Oh, and The Great Indian Dysfunctional Family. 

I’m currently watching Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai (from the time leap that stars Harshad Chopra). It’s terrible, it’s literally like the production team is conducting a “what not to do” experiment. The leads are cute though *shrug* And someone stopped by the other day and recommended Anupamaa.

Anon, I have been contemplating this ask for several days, because the answer to this depends on what aspects of The Untamed you vibe with. Here are some of my favorite Hindi films broken down by what I like!

Best overall rec: Om Shanti Om

If you want happy, character-driven romance: Jab We Met

If you want historical spectacle and a slow burn: Jodhaa-Akbar

If you want friendship , coming of age, and for someone to rip your heart out and stomp on it: Rang De Basanti

If you want revenge and fucked-up tragedy: Haider

If you want tragic romance: Ram-Leela

Obligatory clarification: "Bollywood" refers specifically to the mainstream Hindi film industry based in Mumbai. India has multiple other film industries in other regions and languages, particularly in the south. (Baahubali, for example, was originally in Tamil and Telugu, and so it's Indian but not "Bollywood.") There's also "parallel cinema," which is the artsy/independent film industry (though the lines are a bit more blurred nowadays), and can be in any language.

Best Recommendation: Om Shanti Om

OSO is the film I show people who've never seen a Bollywood film before, and everyone--from my fellow adult friends to my 11-year-old students who saw one clip and then looked it up on Netflix on their own--has loved it. Since it invokes so many filmi tropes, it's accessible to newcomers, and gets better the more films you see. The first half, set in the 1970s, follows a struggling actor smitten with a starlet, both of whom are murdered at the intermission! The second half picks up 30 years later, as our reincarnated hero (now a successful actor thanks to being reborn into an industry family) regains the memories of his past life and vows to avenge his and his beloved's deaths. Like The Untamed, OSO does a fantastic job of balancing wacky hijinks with pathos, and you get sucked right in to the stylized melodrama. They also both have great casts who seem to have been having a blast filming it! (Word of warning: if this is your first Bollywood movie, you can go ahead and fast-forward through the song "Deewangi Deewangi," which is like 8 minutes of celebrity cameos and not as fun if you don't know who they are.)

If you want happy, character-driven romance: Jab We Met

Jab We Met is one of the only romantic comedies that warms my cold, shriveled heart, and it's purely because it centers characterization rather than following a script. Corporate sadboy Aditya hops a train in a depressive fugue and meets the relentlessly cheerful Geet. In befriending Geet, Aditya starts to work on himself and process his own emotions. He also develops romantic feelings for Geet, but respects that Geet is already in love with someone else. However, when Geet experiences emotional devastation of her own, it's Aditya's turn to help her learn and grow. Geet and Aditya avoid the icky "manic pixie dream girl fixes emotionally stifled man" BS because they both have rich interiority and help each other. They're also a great example of what friends-to-lovers should be: Aditya values Geet as a friend first and foremost, and the "lovers" part isn't treated as an Obviously Better inevitable next step. It's cute! It also has a Very Wangxian Love Song.

If you want historical spectacle and a slow burn: Jodhaa-Akbar

This film centers on the journey of Rajput princess Jodhaa and Mughal emperor Jalaluddin Mohammad Akbar on their journey from arranged marriage to friends to lovers, with a lot of politics and religious tensions on the way. Things you can look forward to in this four-hour film include, but are not limited to:

Beautiful costumes and sets

Sexual tension sword fighting

Women having agency over their own bodies (even though this is a period piece!)

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan being a boss

Hrithik Roshan somehow making that mustache work

The female gaze

This one musical cue that singlehandedly destroys the dramatic tension on three separate occasions

If you want friendship and coming of age (but also want something to rip out your heart and stomp on it): Rang De Basanti

Rang De Basanti is like a Les Mis modern AU about the student revolutionaries, but set in India and actually good. A young British woman sets out to make a docudrama about the young anticolonialist revolutionaries of the 1930s and casts a group of college friends to play the roles. Since the guys are all jaded millennials who've written off the country the revolutionaries fought to liberate as Irreparably Fucked, they struggle to connect with the historical figures... until a tragedy yanks them violently into political action. I love, love, love every single relationship in this movie, and every single character has their own little arc going. While this is a more grounded film than some others on this list, it allows its characters a degree of emotional expression and vulnerability that Hollywood shies away from (especially for men) but which The Untamed and other Cdramas embrace. You will learn about anticolonial history and the power of friendship! You will also cry a lot! (cw: realistic depictions of gun violence, prison torture, and blood)

If you want revenge and fucked-up tragedy: Haider

Haider is an adaptation of Hamlet set in mid-1990s Kashmir. It is also my favorite adaptation of Hamlet by a SUBSTANTIAL margin, as it beautifully weaves the themes, basic plot, and characters of Hamlet into the upsetting political context of the insurgence in Jammu and Kashmir. The inciting incident of Hamlet (Hamlet meeting his father's ghost and learning of his murder) doesn't occur until halfway into Haider, as the first half is spent establishing the character relationships after Haider's father is arrested by the govenrnment and vanishes in jail. The added character development for Gertrude, Claudius, and Ophelia/Horatio (who are merged into one character here) mean that the inevitable destructive conclusion to Haider's vengeance REALLY HURTS because I feel awful for everyone involved, which is also how I feel about Guanyin Temple. (cw: realistic depictions of suicide, gun violence, dead bodies, and gore)

If you want tragic romance: Ram-Leela

Ram-Leela is an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, so that should tell you how this one ends. As with Haider, this film makes several changes from its Shakespearean source material, the biggest ones being:

Mercutio and Benvolio are gone, so unlike Romeo, Ram has zero support network.

Both Capulet parents have been merged into Leela's mother Dhankor Baa, who is TERRIFYING.

THEY ACTUALLY DO RUN AWAY AFTER RAM IS BANISHED, addressing one of THEE most frustrating things in the play!

More female characters (!!!), thanks in part to elements of West Side Story creeping into the play.

Honestly, the entire second half is an AU fanfic, largely for the better even though it goes off the rails during the last 45 minutes.

Though there are some issues with structure and pacing, as is the case for most of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's work, Ram-Leela is GORGEOUS stylized spectacle and its soundtrack slaps. It matches the tone of The Untamed's more dramatic segments, and lets characters' emotions and responses be BIG. (cw: depictions of suicide, gun violence, attempted sexual assault, and blood)

I can't believe it took me so long to find out about this movie and watch it, it's absolutely delightful! and it still holds up very very well I could mostly tell it was 'old' because of the phones they use and how they're dressed lol they avoid or work around a lot of clichés and the leads characters are so nice, I love their journey (both their individual growth and their actual journey across the country)

and omg knew that it was sort of a classic bollywood romcom but I had no idea it was that iconic haha geet it a very good icon in my opinion, the scene of her pushing him to get rid of his ex's picture was so fun!!

Oh gosh, I have a small army of fics I am working through right now, some that I have been reading, or are currently reading and enjoyed recently are (I'll give you 10):

1. Cut From the Team @rockykelboa

I don't think I will even NOT reach this fic. Its really really angsty and heavy, but if you want on the pain train, this fic delivers! 

2. Reign @thats-my-bulma

I haven't started the sequel to this yet, but I really enjoyed this fic, also be on the look out for a review in the nearish future ;)

3. Cake, Coffee and Confession Butane Baby (anyone have a link for their Tumblr or twitter?)

This is a great short little fic, I don't wanna give away too much, but if you like Panchy/Vegeta interactions.... you should definitely read this one!

4. Destiny Khandy_raynne (anyone know how to get ahold of them also?!)

OMG... this fic is KILLING me right now... definitely in the best ways, but if you want a heartbreaking and sweet story, this is great. Beware, Trigger warnings! This author explores themes of rape/noncon in their stories, but if that doesn't bother you, I rec either of the two stories by this author!

5. Burnout Blackcatscratch

Uni AU, Vegeta tutors Bulma, there's still no real smut, but the dancing n the latest chapter FAR MAKES UP FOR IT!

Ive been betaing this fic since it started and there is so much to unpack in this story, and I can't wait to see the reactions to what's coming down the pipe in the future! Boarding School AU, twisty, painful and fun!

7. Bandaids on Bullet Holes. @1vulgarwoman

Nervous about where this fic is going, but was insta-hooked after the steamy first chapter!

I was a little later to the Obsidian train than others, but damn its great and follows the myth of Euros and Psyche.... But this crazy bitch has thrown in some drama and I NEED to know what is gonna happen next ;P

9. Small Miscalculations JacoTaco

What happens when Bulma is shrunk down to three inches tall? How does Vegeta react? You never knew you needed to read a fic about this until you read this story.... so go do it!

10. A Place in the Sun @rockykelboa

While I feel bad plugging two of Rocky’s fics in this post, I also don't because they are fucking amazing. This one is a summertime childhood cabin AU... Veggie is the tough tsundere we love, but is a protective big brother to Tarble and every second spent not reading this fic is WRONG!

over the last few months, i've been devouring @wolfpants' works. ever since reading pages of you in two days, their rendering of harry, draco and a vast array of incredibly compelling side characters have irrevocably hooked me.

wolf is an author in enthralling motion. their fics often feature places, temporalities and contexts far removed from where canon holds & leaves us, while simultaneously being tenderly familiar, like coming home. wolf's sense of & grasp over setting leaves me breathless and dumbstruck. their different spatialities inform & infuse character in admirable ways, at various levels of craft, enjoyment and inspiration. this fandom knows and loves the draco and harry they give us, but we delight in discovering new dimensions & aspects of these characters. it's always done brilliantly believably, especially in the framework of the worlds they construct— a breath of fresh air in a forest where the trees still know your name.

wolf's works also demonstrate, sometimes explicitly, sometimes implicitly, a really significant political sensibility. most of their fics are set against backdrops tight with political tension bleeding into the characters' circumstances and interpersonal dynamics. whether through a spectrality haunting the narrative or the crucial central diegetic thread, wolf's works are layered, interrogating and collapsing delineations among private, public and political, between history and contemporaneity and between narrative and commentary.

in the interests of length & theme of this list, i've specifically selected some fics that, for me, showcase wolf's mastery & playfulness with setting, understood as deviations in place, time and universe. the broader recommendation is, of course, to check out everything wolf has ever written!

nightcall (E, 1k) ft. a long distance phone call

On a top secret Unspeakable misson, Harry calls Draco from a remote phone booth on the Isle of Skye.

a stunning portrait of desire, longing and familiarity that uses distance as a device to intensify every element. it's unbelievable how much character & context 1k words of (mostly) smut can pack in. the slivers of backstory demand your investment, inform the dynamic in crucial ways and set up some delicious stakes and tension. and some absolutely fantastic dirty talk. see also: @getawayfox's gorgeous art for this fic!

long haul (E, 8.6k) ft. plane rides, mile high club, nyc

The last person Harry expects to run into on a long haul flight to New York City is Draco Malfoy.

the way wolf writes movement— between places, between people— strokes its way up your spine, warms you, walks with you. draco and harry, buoyed in the air, let preconceived notions fall away, to be replaced by startlingly rapid and exquisite intimacy. the liminal settings, specifically, allow mature, open-minded, desirous characterisation & some of the most glorious, soft, tender sex to fall into like a warm bed.

look for me in the sun (M, 8.7k) ft. americana, roadtrip/on-the-run vibes

Harry and Draco are on the run in America after a mysterious string of werewolf-like attacks in the Muggle community causes the Ministry to impose new and harsh anti-werewolf legislation.

atmospheric writing dialled up to eleven, like the smell of ozone in the air before a thunderstorm. the sense of limbo— transience, out of place and time, the complication of home— that afflicts the circumstances of draco & harry here is heart-wrenching. a taut rumination on otherness in a variety of ways, rendered through some of the most tense and subtle writing i've encountered.

under giant mountains (E, 33.7k) ft. norwegian dragon reserves & rampant escapist tendencies

Harry doesn't know where he's going. Everyone else has their life paths figured out; he doesn't even know where his map is. Who'd have thought Draco Malfoy bathing in a Norwegian forest would be the guidepost Harry needed?

opens with harry, stuck in the same place for far too long, and draco, avoiding fixity like the plague. this fic looks at both stagnation and escapism as iterations of each other & treats them with the gentlest empathy. the norwegian dragon reserve setting, whose visuality wolf's writing captures beautifully, becomes the canvas to explore both. desire, here, was simultaneously so evident from the outset and took its time to build— longing tinged every interaction & payoff, in the form of a sequence of some of the most emotionally fraught sex scenes i've ever read, was that much sweeter.

romp and circumstance (E, 35k) ft. a historical au set in the 1800s, regency era england

Since the war, Harry Potter has gone from Saviour to Scoundrel—not that he’s complaining. With a schedule full of gorgeous men, alcohol, and late nights, why would he want to change? Enter Draco Malfoy: beautiful, sharp, and completely untouchable. When Draco comes to Harry with a proposition to help him attract an engagement, Harry’s up for it—after all, how hard can it be not falling for his former nemesis? Very hard, apparently.

the very first wolf fic i read, in a brief little fandom interlude back in 2022. i remember thinking, then, what an author, i'm really missing out these days. one of my favourite post-war harry characterisations— raucous, promiscuous, messy and at heart, a hopeless romantic. also one of my favourite draco characterisations— pristine, a little uptight, cool and distant and untouchable, except what he really wants is to be unbuttoned, messed up. the transforming sentiments of their relationship were so compelling, the build of harry's feelings was perfectly achey and tender and this draco was a complex, nuanced, frightfully sexy version that i just couldn't turn away from.

pages of you (E, 101k) ft. a 1980s non-magical au

Summer, 1980. Harry is floating between university and becoming a Real Certified Adult. He's not ready. He really isn't. In a desperate attempt to have the Best Last Summer ever, he takes a casual job at his godfather's bookshop in London, starts an illicit pen pal affair with a wordy posh boy that he's catching feelings for, all while dealing with the son of Sirius's business rival, one Draco Malfoy, insufferable know-it-all extraordinaire.

gosh, what a fic. sensitive and sprawling, this work brings the spatialities of london, sirius and remus' queer comfort of a bookshop and harry's room at the residence halls to pulsing, colourful, splendid life. i can still close my eyes and imagine the spaces this fic occurs in, how important they are to the push and pull, ups and downs of the dynamic between harry and draco. a coming-of-age/sexual awakening & exploration story, summer romance and queer political fiction rolled into one, this is a fic that's hard to summarise and easy to obsess over. perfect characterisations, writing that burrows into your soul and a plot that unfolds with the slow and steady depth of gentle lake.

terrible people (E, 52.7k) ft. cruises, beach holidays and more of @getawayfox's masterpieces

What happens when Harry and Draco end up on the same Muggle gay cruise? They certainly didn't plan for it to happen (but their friends might have). They're stuck with each other for a week, they might as well make the most of it, right?

in conclusion: vivid, descriptive, immersive storytelling from an author who understands the intricacies of different narrative elements and leverages them masterfully. can't wait to read the works i haven't, and for everything wolf writes in the future!

Inspired by your Drarry fic recs and your amazing Flintwood fic, do you have any Flintwood recs or personal favorites?

ah! fantastic ask, anon! flintwood was, incidentally, my earliest hp ship & maintains a soft spot after all these years. their functions in canon (quidditch captains of rival houses, pinnacles of a certain kind of obsessive, single-minded, aggressive athletic masculinity) conduce some of the most raw and gritty characterisations— kind of like if tracing your tongue along the jagged, broken end of a tooth was a ship. flintwood encapsulates a very specific kind of mood— a foregrounded physicality, a delicious emotional dimension balancing both subtlety and brashness. this ship is especially delightful when you're in the mood for some deferred emotional payoff, a little out of reach and more satisfying for it.

(tw for some discussions of queerphobia & masculinity!)

flintwood also works with and subverts some common stereotypes & tropes associated with sports as a site of exalted & amplified masculinity. oliver and marcus are both, in fic, often representations of what a popular (largely homophobic & patriarchal) culture understands as 'masculine ideal stereotypes'— physically hulking, emotionally repressed, narrow-focused, a little dangerous. and flintwood, as a ship, is crucially also about these 'ideal men' making the choice to step away from the hallowed halls of homosociality towards explicit queer desire, dynamics and love.

i'm getting into this because a large selection of flintwood fics i've loved deal (overtly or covertly) with coming to terms with queer awakenings, reckoning with being queer men in sports and similar explorations. my flintwood fic (thank you for reading it, anon!), addictive tendencies (~4k, T, tw for internalised homophobia) also grapples with this fairly significantly. in fact, even when the central tension isn’t explicitly about a queer reckoning, and the worldbuilding has little/no queerphobia, many excellent flintwood fics have some of the themes, ideas and tropes you find in literature accounting for our society’s (often disparaging) attitude towards queerness: a desire both intense and grudging, a sense of “i can’t have this person” justified through rivalry and/or jealousy, poignant internal conflicts, etc.

It stands to reason that Harry’s holding groceries when he runs into Draco Malfoy for the first time in twenty years.

Well— doesn’t run into, exactly. No, more like peers through a shop window like a right barmy bastard, bits of overspilling lettuce brushing his arm and passers-by on Diagon shooting him strange looks.

Of course Malfoy has to look up from the till— because, yes, Draco Malfoy is a shopkeeper on Diagon Alley apparently— and see him goggling. So, of course, Harry has to step inside, as though he meant to make a stop at— right, yeah, Narcissus Needlework Studio— all along, holding brown paper packages of vegetables.

Malfoy’s frowning when Harry makes his way over to the till.

“I don’t want any trouble,” he says. “I’ve registered the shop, everything’s perfectly within regulation—“

“Trouble?” Harry blinks. “Oh, no. I’m not an Auror. Anymore.”

“I know that,” Malfoy says unhappily. “The whole Wizarding World all over Europe knows that. Only you’ve never left well enough alone, have you, Potter?”

Harry’s forty next month. He’s lived twenty years seeing hide nor hair of Draco Malfoy, and he’s never gone looking. Well, except for that one time when he was twenty one and went to the Manor as a trainee Auror for a— well, it was a routine check, really. And that other time when he was twenty five and thought he saw a man at a club who looked just like Malfoy from the back and was convinced for four months Malfoy was back in London and must be up to something if no one knew about it. And that time when he was thirty two— and, oh, alright, Harry hasn’t ever left well enough alone, not when it comes to Malfoy, at least.

This time, though, Harry really didn’t go looking. And it’s definitely Malfoy.

“I just wanted some— thread,” Harry says. A needlework studio should have some of that, shouldn’t it?

“Thread,” says Malfoy. He looks down, deliberately, at Harry’s lettuce.

“For Molly,” Harry says. “As a, um, birthday present. New shop on Diagon, thought I’d pop by. Seemed the place, you know. Didn’t know it was yours.”

Molly’s birthday, Malfoy doesn’t need to know, is in December. It’s June.

Malfoy continues to stare at him, until Harry’s unsure whether to get indignant about it all or turn tail and flee.

“Well,” says Malfoy before he can make a choice. “Embroidery yarn for you, then, Potter. Come along.”

“I’ll see you again, I assume,” Malfoy says at the end of what transpires to be a surprisingly smooth purchase.

Harry nods.

He only realises after he leaves that there’s no reason for him to come back. He’s seen it for himself— what Draco Malfoy’s up to these days. Nothing nefarious or suspicious, just yarn and needles and tapestries on Diagon.

Except, well, he’s committed now, hasn’t he? And Harry Potter’s a man of his word. He said yes, when Malfoy asked— Malfoy asked!— so he’ll be back.

And really, if he has to invent Hermione’s sudden new and passionate interest in needlework— well. That’s between Harry and his lettuce.

“What the fuck is this?”

Potter, in a fit of rage, is quite the sight to behold. Magic sizzles around him, errant curls escape his lazy bun, spectacles sit a touch too crooked on his nose.

Draco sips his tea. “A transfer request.”

“For Merlin’s sake—“ Potter rubs the bridge of his nose, a tell Draco’s learnt to mean he’s confused and scattered, and entirely unwilling to admit it. “I can read, Malfoy. Why?”

“Article 9, Section 3 of the Auror Code of Conduct—“

“No,” Potter cuts him off. “Absolutely not.”

Draco puts his tea down.

“I wouldn’t have thought,” he begins, slow and careful, “that you’d have already forgotten— what we did. Right in this office, in fact.”

“I haven’t forgotten anything,” Potter says. The transfer request is crumpling in his fist.

“Then you also remember it’s against the rules for us to remain partners—“

Potter stalks closer, until he’s towering over Draco’s desk. Draco’s mouth is desert-dry.

“Fuck the rules,” he says. This close, his scar always takes Draco by surprise, stark and ridged and white, cutting across his forehead and the top of his cheekbone. This close, now and every other time, he’s a riot of messy intensity. Draco can’t look away. “Merlin, Draco, when have I given a fuck about the rules? You leave me, I leave the MLE, there’s no point—”

“Potter,” Draco says. He’s weak and has never resisted temptation well. It’s no surprise this is all it takes for him to reach and cup Harry’s jaw, jittery thumb catching on the stubble shadowing his cheek. “Harry, I’m not that special.”

“Tell me you’re doing this because you think you have to,” Harry says, quiet and low. “Tell me you felt like you must, and not because you— because you want to get away from me. If it’s that, then I won’t stand in—“

“Don’t be silly.” It comes out sharp and affectionate, and Harry’s shoulders relax a little. “Nobody—“ he swallows, “—nobody else I’d trust to get my coffee order right, is there?” A flicker of a smile. Draco’s spirit sings. “Or—“ he says, huge and irrevocable and far too honest, “have my back in a fight. Only. It’s only you, isn’t it?”

Harry’s hand comes up, covers Draco’s where it still rests, trembling and uncertain on his cheek. He pulls it away, and for a split second Draco almost panics, until he realises Harry is lacing their fingers together, grip tight.

“It wasn’t a mistake,” Harry says. “The— us.” His mouth ghosts over Draco’s knuckles, warm and soft and plaintive. “I wanted it so long, Draco.”

“It wasn’t a mistake,” Draco acquiesces.

They stare at each other, long, silent moments, breaths heavy.

“I’ll stay,” Draco nods eventually. “Of course I’ll stay, all you had to do was ask, just, say something Potter. Don’t you know that?”

Harry lights up with a grin so broad Draco wants to taste it, dip his tongue into it, merge his mouth with—

But Harry’s stepping back, towards the dustbin in the corner. Draco has a moment of confusion before Harry straightens out the transfer request still bunched in his grip and rips it to pieces. The parchment flutters, confetti-like, to the floor.

“You’re stuck with me,” Harry says, serious and determined, even though the smile hasn’t quite left his mouth. “Right here.”

“Where else—“ Draco clears his throat when the words come out raspy and tangled, “Harry. Where else would I possibly want to be?”
