Tim Bradford x Reader
Summary: based off of what happens when tim comes home after the events of S4E8 but he didn't resolve things.
Word Count: 408
----------------------------------------------------------
You hear the door slam when Tim comes home. You didn't hear about anything while at the station that was horrible. Most of the calls were mellow other than the sovereign citizen call.
"Tim?" You call out to him as he walks into the living room. You see his red rimmed eyes and shaky hands. You quickly pull him into a hug. You don't know what's wrong yet.
"It's my sister, she wants me to go visit dad and, and deal with the house," he says as you both sit down.
You couldn't imagine what it must be like to have to go back to the place where all of your trauma was created. To see the person who gave you the trauma.
"I, I don't know what to do. She shouldn't have to sell the house alone. But I can't imagine having to go back and see the crumpled plaster from where he would smash my head into the wall," Tim said. His voice cracked on the last few words.
"I can help her," you say and give his hand a squeeze. There wasn't anything you wouldn't do for Tim.
He gives you a sad smile before letting go of your hand and running his fingers through his short hair. He lets out a shaky sigh before leaning back against the couch.
"He's in hospice. Drinking finally caught up to him," Tim says and you place a comforting hand on his bicep.
"Tim, you haven't seen him in twenty years. You don't need to go back now. After everything he put you through, you don't owe him anything," you tell him and he nods.
"Thanks," he says. He still felt some type of guilt for not going. He was his father. But not all parents deserve children. It wasn't Tim's fault he had grown up with a horrible, abusive monster of a father. It wasn't his sisters either.
It was easier for Genny to deal with everything because Tim had taken most of the abuse.
"it'll be okay," you tell him and he smiles before placing a light kiss on your lips.
"I don't know what I'd do without you," he says with a sigh. He honestly didn't. You kept him sane when the whole world tried not to. When everything fell apart you kept him from going insane. "I love you," he says as he gives you another soft kiss.
You smile, "I love you to."

Chenford + I’m not letting my dad ruin our wedding
Tim was halfway dressed when Wesley barged in the dressing room looking every ounce of unpleased. His wife—well his soon to be wife— was down the hallway on the verge of tears all because of his father. The man that Tim had not thought about inviting, but Lucy had mentioned it one day of hand.
After a very tense conversation between the couple, an invite was extended to the oldest Bradford via Genny.
Tim knew it was a bad idea to invite the man, he knew it in his bones, and turns out he was right.
When Tim finally makes his way into Lucy’s dressing room, the room is void of any other human being besides her. She has her back to him, her red rimmed eyes looked up at him quickly before she ducks her head. He does not say a word as he crosses the room until he’s standing right behind her.
“You were right,” she admits softly. Her voice void of any fighting spirit, just flat and dejected.
“I’m not letting my dad ruin our wedding,” he tells her defiantly. His hand landing softly on her shoulder to offer some comfort. Lucy looks up at him, her eyes blank and lacking the excitement that was held in them for weeks before. “C’mon. Stand up.”
“Tim—”
“Lucy…cmon.” With a huff, Lucy pushed herself to her feet before turning to face him. “I’m not going to let my dad ruin our wedding,” he tells her again, wrapping his arms around her shoulders careful not to mess up her hair. “I promise that you are going to walk down that isle in less than an hour and then we’re going to be married….finally.”

1.3.7 SATURDAY NOVEMBER 1st. 9:38 AM‬
Warren County, Illinois
Diego's cellphone, or what was left of it, sat smashed and broken inside a large plastic bag marked EVIDENCE. The bag sat inside a large white crate on a metal folding table, under the canvas tent in the parking lot of the hospital that Ben Meeker had alluded to earlier. Ben had just set the crate down on the table and as he was stepping out of the tent, Officer Kinnerly a/k/a Doughboy passed him, presumably headed to his cruiser in the parking lot.
“Kin, where are you going?” Meeker barked.
Doughboy stopped, eyes wide, “I was headed over to the high school, Mitchum just called and said they needed help setting up the tents and stuff over there.”
Meeker sighed in relief, “Thank God! Come here, I need you to do something for me.”
Doughboy followed Meeker into the tent, Meeker pointed to the crate, “This is all the bagged evidence from the crash out on 57. I need you to take it over to the high school and put it with the other evidence there.”
Doughboy looked down into the crate. Among the cellphone were other odds and ends in the bag. Gabriel Couture's White Sox hat, Brad Doyle's marijuana pipe, the tail to Zoey Bailey's cat costume. All were soaked in blood.
“I know you're not a courier Kin but everybody's all tied up and I had to bring that shit over here myself so if you wouldn't mind--”
“No,” Doughboy cut him off, “Don't worry about it, it's no problem sir.”
Meeker clapped him on the back, “Thanks, thank you so much.”
Ben didn't give Kinnerly a chance to respond. He stepped out of the tent, and back into the frenzy of activity. Agent McGrath stood with Dick Spencer and Fred Colbourne who was talking with the Governor. Mr. Salazar from listened on as well. Fred was making animated gestures with his hand toward the building as he spoke.
“We have the fire eliminated now, we can begin retrieving casualties immediately. Right now we have everyone tied up in--”
The Governor cut him off, “What caused the explosion?”
“There was a supply closet opposite the front entrance adjacent to the triage and nurse's stations. According to the plans and what we've found inside, this closet was filled with flammable oxygen tanks. A large explosion seems to have generated from this area and then spread through the nurse's station very quickly with all the paper files and what not.”
“And no fire suppression sounded, no alarms, nothing?” The Governor's eyes were ice cold.
“It seems,” Fred began slowly, “the power supply, and back-up power supply to these systems failed.”
“How in the world...?” The Governor started but she didn't finish.
There was a commotion behind the group and all turned at the sound of yelling and cursing. The guard gate had been forced open, and a group of officers now stood on patrol outside of the guard-shack, which was still wrapped in caution tape. A white Cadillac with gawdy gold rims and tinted windows so dark you couldn't see through them at all burst through the checkpoint, scattering police officers in it's wake.
The Cadillac roared to within ten feet of the group and the engine died. Bob Dodge stepped out of the driver's side. His eyes were blood-shot, his hair disheveled, a fine shadow of the beginnings of a beard on his face. He wore a wrinkled white dress shirt much too small for him and a blue tie much too short for him. Only one side of his shirt was stuffed in his khakis, also too small for him. To be fair, the clothes didn't belong to him and they were the only articles of clothing Lou Martini had that were even close to Dodge's size.
Meeker looked at Fred who winced at the sight of the mayor. Agent McGrath gaped at the sight. Mr. Salazar looked at the Governor questioningly, while Dick Spencer frowned and blurted, “Who the fuck is that?”
The Governor growled.
Literally growled.
“Well look who decided to show up,” the Governor said.
Bob Dodge rubbed his nose nervously, “Well you know how I like to make an entrance,” he quipped. No one was amused.
Bob looked passed the group at the hospital, “Holy shit, what the hell happened to this place?!”
“Well it seems someone definitely has to catch the Mayor up on the day's current events,” the Governor said scowling, “I don't think it's time to recap last night's events to those who have actually lived it.”
Meeker stepped toward Dodge, “I'll handle this,” he said to the group and then looked back at Fred, “Cheif Colbourne, I believe you were telling the Governor about the generator and why the fire systems failed.”
Dodge croaked a nervous laugh, “Oh no, did we have another one of those damn Gennies fail Fred?”
Meeker grabbed Bob's arm. Bob winced, “Oww!”
Ben gritted his teeth and said quietly, “Shut up Bob and come over here with me.”
“Dammit Bengie that hurts,” Bob said, but he was walking nonetheless.
From behind them they heard Fred Colbourne recount why the generators had failed to fire up. As they drew closer to the tent, Ben began:
“Where the hell have you been all night? I've been blowing up your phone since before midnight!?”
“I was at Lou's party..duh.”
“Don't 'duh' me, tuck in your damn shirt.” Meeker scowled.
Bob began struggling in vain to tuck in the undersized garment. “Where the hell is Leigh Ben?”
Just then a fire fighter sprinted up toward the other group and yelled for Fred. “Chief! Chief!”
“What is it PJ?” Fred asked.
“Cables are in place. We are about to lower Sherriff Brackett down right now.” PJ replied.
Ben looked at Bob, “Well I guess you're about to find now aren't you?”

As she flicks through the pages of the latest issue of Vogue Magazine, making mental plans for how to be ' more stylish ', dark eyes rested on the coffee mug before her, losing her focus. It wasn't beautiful or elegant, it wasn't expensive, it had no sentimental value. For a moment she reaches out to touch the rim of the mug - coated in the same colour as the lipstick of the model on the page, a warm rogue. Genny had intended to drink the hot liquid inside the mug, but instead, she found the taste dull and snaps her hand back to the glossy pages and returns to flicking them back and forth too rapidly to read much ...  She’s bored. Finally, after fighting with the flimsy pages for another minute, Genny ends up tossing the magazine onto the table in front of her and while taking the hardly touched mug with her, Genny makes her way over to the open counter front. ❛ Please tell me you have something to spice up my cappuccino, ❜ she whines, leaning her body against the counter in order to dramatically catch the attention of darling Ethan. Some folks wear a smile, this guy was the smile. Everything about him was soft and there was an understated joy that came upon Genny the days he greeted her. There was something about Ethan that was just so ... unequivocally kind. Genny almost hated him for it. Almost. ❛ Like an anamaretto shot? Listen, I'm desperate enough to take a whiskey short or two if you have that. ❜

Rust - Have you thought about becoming old? Can you become old? Are you scared of being old? What do you think about elders?
Genny tilts her head at the question, “I would like to live a life long enough where I’d be considered old. Given my line of work its more of a fleeting wish then anything.” She laughs a bit, “I’m not afraid of becoming old.. Rather I am afraid of being alone when I am older. Elders are interesting sorts who are generally stuck in their ways.. But after such a long life, can they be blamed?”
Green - Was there ever a time in your life that you went through a period of growth? describe it.
“I would like to believe I am growing all the time.. However..” She chews on her lip a moment, rubbing her thumb along the rim of her teacup, “A time I had experienced it.. Would have to be.. When the traitors came..” She swallowed hard, “Having everyone I had trusted and been close to.. Suddenly having them turn against me and attempt to kill me.. Its a hard experience to learn.. To learn never to trust someone completely.. And that even those with good intentions can be cruel...”
Wine - What is your opinion on alcohol? (and does it exist in your world?)
“Alcohol is good for enjoyment, and good for letting you escape your emotions and memories at time.. So long as one does not become dependent upon it to cope with the world, then it is a good thing.” She gives a small nod.
Periwinkle -  Would you consider yourself to be a good parent? What do you think a good parent should be?
“I would like to believe I am a good parent, but I am also certain I wouldn’t be a good parent.. I’m always overthinking.. analyzing everything around me.. For a child, a parent should be someone they can rely on to be the pillar in their life. The one concrete and stable thing while they explore an always changing world.. I can’t be that.”
Coral - Do you have a strong moral code? What are some moral things that you feel strongly about?
“I don’t think I have one.. No.. Which sounds weird, probably.” She chuckles, “I feel strongly that children and the weak should not be killed- no matter the war. That people should be allowed to love. That the killing of innocent demands justice.. but otherwise morals are more loose and fickle.”

– VIOLENT DELIGHTS  ☠️
Polly Gray took a large gulp of whiskey, watching her nephew carefully over the rim of the glass as she drank. Tommy had come to her for advice, although he’d done it too fucking late as was usual for Thomas Shelby when he had one of his more brilliant ideas. Opposite her, Thomas watched his aunt with a sort of nervous anticipation, she wasn’t happy with what he’d told her, he could tell that much from the coldness in her eyes as they watched him over her glass, unblinking. But despite Polly’s clear disdain for the idea, she hadn’t yet thrown the glass directly at him and that told Thomas that although she didn’t want to, she agreed with him.
“Have you told him?” She questioned after a long moments silence.
“No, and I’m not going to…not until he’s there.” Polly nodded slowly, agreeing with Tommy. Both she and him knew that if John were told, there wasn’t a chance in hell he’d turn up tomorrow morning at ten.
“…and have you told her?”
“Who?” Tommy asked, breaking Polly’s gaze for the first time – guiltily.
“You know fucking who. Have you?”
“I’m going to tell Genevieve tonight.” Thomas admitted, sighing as he spoke and removing a cigarette from the packet in his breast pocket. He lit it up and took a long drag, watching Polly again carefully, gauging her reaction as best he could. “She’ll understand.”
“She’ll understand alright.” Polly agreed, taking another sip. “But she wont like it, not one bit. She loves him you know…really loves him, and he loves her.”
“I know.” Thomas admitted.
“…and he promised her cousin, well…” Polly gestured with her hand. “You were there, you know what he promised.”
“John promised Archie that he would protect her, that he’d always make sure that she was safe. He never promised to marry her.” Even as he said the words Tommy felt a wave of guilt wash over him as the memory of Archie Lock, dying on that field in France became front and centre in his mind. He could remember it clear as day, could still feel the rain on his skin, smell the smoke from seemingly endless gunfire, and he could still see Archibald Lock. He would never forget watching Archie die, and he would never forget the Lock lad’s dying words, and how he made, not only John but Thomas and Arthur as well, promise to care for his cousin back home.
“Oh well in that case.” Polly snapped, lighting a cigarette of her own and taking a long drag. “You’ll break her fucking heart you know that don’t you Thomas.”
“Aye, I know Pol…” he leant back on his chair as he spoke, glancing out the window of his office into the bookkeepers where Gennie Lock sat at her desk, working diligently and late as she almost always did. “I know.” He repeated, taking another drag before gesturing for Polly to stand. “Send her in.”
Polly shook her head as she stood, and gave Thomas a look that only she could get away with giving him before she pulled the door open and called Genevieve Lock in, advising Thomas wanted to speak to her. Polly waited by the door as Gennie stood and fixed her golden hair before making her way across the room with a smile and an aura of such blinding positivity that it made Polly feel rotten to simply look at her. The women greeted one another with a soft kiss on the cheek and Polly excused herself from the room, but not before shooting Tom one last scathing look.
Once they were alone, Genevieve stood awkwardly, picking at a loose thread on the dress her mother had spent hours making and never once catching Thomas’ eye. They’d spent more time alone together since the war had ended than they ever had before the war. Back then she’d spent all of her time with Archie and John, and Thomas had been too preoccupied with Greta Jurossi to notice little Gennie Lock from down the lane. After a long pause, and a deafening silence, Gen cleared her throat and finally met Thomas’ waiting crystal blue gaze. “You wanted to see me?”
Thomas took another drag on his cigarette, rolling it between his thin lips before removing it and tapping the ash into a tray on his desk. He gestured for her to take a seat opposite him which Gennie did without question. He watched as she fidgeted uncomfortably, and frowned at the fact that her clear unease at being in a room alone with him bothered him, why did it bother him? Pushing the thoughts to one side Tommy leaned back in his chair once more. “Little Gennie Lock…” He spoke her name delicately, as though he were talking about something sacred, which in a sense he was – Genevieve Lock had truly become a sacred thing to all of the Shelby family in the time since the war had ended.
“If this is about the numbers last week Thomas…” Gennie spoke quickly, calling him by his full name as she almost always did, having too much respect – and just a hint of fear – for him to call him by anything but. “…if it is then I spoke to Polly, and to Arthur actually, and I explained and Arthur said I didn’t need to pay it out of my wages but well,” she produced a handful of coins from the pocket her mother Elsie had concealed within the fabric of her dress. “Well that just didn’t feel right so.” She placed the coins down on the table without another word.
Tommy watched as the coins clattered against the hard wood of his desk and laughed softly. He leant forwards and pushed the coins back towards the blonde girl sat opposite him. “Keep your money Gennie, this isn’t about the numbers.”
“Then what is it about?” Gennie asked, puzzled.
“It’s about John.” Tommy explained, finishing his cigarette and stubbing out the end in the ash filled tray on the table.
“Oh,” at the mere name of Thomas’ brother, Gennie’s entire demeanour changed. It was as though a physical weight was lifted, she sat up straighter, and smiled an impossibly bright smile at her employer who watched her through careful eyes on the opposite side of the table. “What about John?” Even the way she said John’s name sounded like a song.
“John is getting married.”
“I beg your pardon?” Gennie spluttered, dark eyes wide and questioning. “I…err…I’m sorry Tom but I don’t really understand.”
“Tomorrow morning, at ten o’clock, John will be married.” The confusion that was etched all over Genevieve Lock’s pretty face caused a sick feeling to erupt in the pit of Tommy’s stomach and he lit another cigarette, hoping the tobacco would settle it. He offered the packet to Gennie and she shakily took one, placing it between her lips and leaning forwards across the desk for Tommy to light it before leaning back on her chair once more and taking a drag.
“…may I ask to whom?”
“You may.” Thomas nodded. “He’ll be married to Esme Lee.”
“Lee?!” Gennie coughed on the smoke she had just inhaled. “He’s…John’s sweet on a Lee girl?”
Thomas shook his head, no. “You and I both know that there is only one girl John boy is sweet on Genevieve.”
Gennie knew who Tom was talking about, he was talking about her, and it was for that exact reason that she looked at him now with eyes that were both confused and accusing. “Why are you telling me this?”
“I’m telling you Gennie,” Tommy took another drag, “because he will want you there tomorrow, we all will, you’re a part of this family.”
“Is that so?” Gen stood, stubbing out the cigarette in her hand despite having only just lit. Thomas watched as the orange light at the end of the cigarette burned out, and then dragged his gaze back to Genevieve who was stood now, staring down at him. “I’ll be leaving now.” She announced, more forcefully than Thomas had ever heard her speak. Her hand was already on the handle of the office door, pulling it open, by the time Tommy was able to respond.
“Ten o’clock tomorrow morning.”
***********************************
It was just before ten o’clock when Thomas rounded the corner and made his way towards the car where John and Arthur were waiting with a small group of Peaky lads. Every one of them had a weapon in their hands, every one of them that is besides Thomas, and John noticed it the moment he spotted his brother. John rolled the toothpick between his lips with his tongue and raised a brow at his older brother.
“John,” Thomas greeted. “You ready?”
“Yeah, yeah I’m fine.” John nodded, brandishing the weapon in his hand towards his brother who nodded.
Behind Thomas, Arthur reached forward, passing John a small flask. “Have a drink.” He suggested. John took the flask and took a swig, nodding a thanks to his brother as he passed it back.
Arthur flashed John a sympathetic look, and John frowned, glancing from his eldest brother to the face of each man that surrounded him, all of whom were watching him closely. “What, what you all staring at me for? What?”
“Good” Thomas clapped John on the back. “Let’s go.” They set off after Thomas, and John continued to look at each of the faces that surrounded him suspiciously.
The Peaky Blinders rounded the corner into the church yard as a group and John caught sight of the Lee clan almost immediately. There was a number of them, dotted around in various areas of the churchyard, some of them armed, some of them decidedly unarmed which John found to be quite unusual. “Tommy,” John leaned forwards, speaking in Thomas’ ear, “what are you playing at we’re in shotgun range?”
Thomas came to an abrupt halt, turning to face his brother with a sly smile. “John, before you go into battle there’s something you’re gonna need.” He pinned a small white flower to John’s lapel. John glanced down at it before speaking.
“What you bloody doing Tommy?”
Thomas took his younger brothers face in both hands, pulling him close so that their foreheads were almost touching. “Smile John, it’s a wedding.”
“Whose bloody wedding?” John asked, moving the toothpick between his lips around anxiously as he spoke, realisation at what was going on slowly setting in.
“Now if we told you, you wouldn’t a’ come.” Tommy explained, his accent thick. “There’s a girl in the Lee family who’s gone a bit wild and she needs marrying off.” John shoved Thomas away, pushing his older brother hard before he had a chance to say anything else.
Around them the Peaky Blinders surged forwards, taking hold of John who fought back against them. “John boy!” Arthur warned.
“John!” Thomas bellowed, causing his brother to stop fighting almost instantly. “Listen to me, a girl who needs a husband…a man who needs a wife.”
“Tom I’m not marrying some fucking mushroom picker.” John spat.
“John boy come on” Arthur warned again, hoping that his position as eldest brother would hold some weight for once.
“Listen,” Thomas spoke again. “I’ve already betrothed you so if you back out now there’s gonna be one mighty war breaking out here that’s gonna make the Somme look like a fucking tea party.” He brought John’s face close to his once again. “But if you marry her, our family and the Lee family will be united forever and this war will be over. Now it’s up to you John, war or peace?”
“Let go of me!” John shrugged off the hands of the Peaky Blinders that surrounded him. Once they were satisfied that he wasn’t going to make a run for it they let him go, all of them backing away by a pace or two, making sure they were close enough to grab him again should the need arise. “What about Gennie eh?” John asked, directing his question to Thomas specifically. “What about my girl? What do I fuckin tell her eh Tom?”
“Gennie already knows.” Thomas spoke quietly, guilt evident on his expression.
“You fucking told her?”
“She had a right to know…”
“I fuckin’ love her Tom, I’ve always fucking loved her.” John was furious and it showed in the way he spat his words at his older brother. “I was going to marry her, we were going to be happy, we were going to have a family…” He was ranting now, reeling off the various life events that he and Genevieve had spoken about in their private moments together, events that it now looked like would never take place.
“You can still have her.” Thomas suggested. If he had been anyone else Thomas might not have been quick enough to dodge the punch that his younger brother swung at him.
“Don’t you fucking dare,” John warned, “suggest that Gennie is some whore, some other girl that I can take when I’m bored of my gypsy fucking wife!”
Thomas held his hands up as a sign of an apology. “I didn’t mean…you know I would never.”
“Fuck you Tommy.” John spat.
There was a long pause, and for a while the two brothers simply stared at one another before Thomas finally stepped to one side. “Well…”
John pushed past him, shoving Thomas hard with his shoulder as he did so. He walked a little way ahead of the group who followed diligently behind him as John walked further into the church yard and towards the makeshift altar where he was to be wed to the Lee girl. In the distance he could see a small crowd, gathered for the nuptials. He could make out the figures of both Polly and Ada but they weren’t who John was looking at, instead his gaze was set firmly on the girl stood furthest from the altar, whose golden hair was illuminated in the sunlight that broke through the grey clouds. Gennie Lock stood beside John’s sister, her eyes cast downwards towards the ground, refusing to look up for fear of bursting into tears if she did.

Written by R. Ann Parris on The Prepper Journal.
In the prepper world, we hear “two is one, one is none”. We don’t want to get carried away with it when we’re packing a rucksack, but it provides positive redundancy for our preparations. If something happens to the primary – from a plan to a tangible item – we have a backup right there, already on hand.
There’s a difference between an alternative and a backup, though. It’s subtle, but significant enough to hugely affect how well we navigate upsets.
We see backups in all areas of preparedness and the self-reliant lifestyles many try to cultivate.
If our pressure canner uses rubber rings, we try to keep an extra on hand.
We stock seeds in case we can’t buy more or buy food in a supermarket, and if we’re frugal we stock multiple years’ seeds separately in case there’s a problem with the last-purchased or last-harvested seed supply.
We map out multiple routes for our vehicles, in case one is blocked.
We keep a light and a speed loader, stripper clip, or spare mag with our EDC or creak-in-the-night firearms.
If we’re into tactical load outs, we carry a primary rifle or carbine, with reloads, and have a sidearm on our waist, leg, or chest where it’s handy if our primary runs dry or goes down at a really bad time. I might even have backups for both primary and sidearm back home.
Right There with Backups, is Having alternates
Alternates are somewhat different from “just” a backup. A backup is the same thing, or nearly the same thing, which functions the same way. An alternate is different, largely or entirely.
Following the examples above…
In addition to my pressure canner – and grid-down ways to bring it to and keep it at pressure – I might also make plans to preserve foods by dehydrating, cold smoking, or salt packing.
I might not only have backup seeds, I might have alternates – faster-growing hybrids of the same type, as well as foreign domesticated crops and-or wild edibles.
I might maintain lists of bus and subway/train schedules, stations, and stops, and cash/tokens for them, a bike, and an ATV to get around suburban and rural obstacles. I might also have packs or small carts for my animals and myself so we can flee on foot.
Instead of planning to repel all borders with direct confrontation if our retreat is noticed, we might have made plans to make the house look already-hit, create passive discomforts, make it difficult to reach, and have actual booby traps as our last line.
Instead of a rifle/carbine, some situations might call for me or a partner to carry a shotgun – which are themselves loaded with alternate options.
I might also keep one specifically loaded with rubber shot, rock salt, bean bags, net, or some other less-than-lethal option for chasing pests out of my garden or breaking up a dog fight.
Instead of or with a gun, I might have a souped-up flashlight that functions like a mini baseball bat.  Other alternatives to an EDC pistol might be a taser bug, retractable asp, or a coin roll in a hanky.
Alternatives as Well as Backups Apply Across all of Preparedness
If we flip the switch and there’s no power, we might have solar-charged and standard battery lamps to go with candles and oil lamps for light. We might augment solar and standard batteries with hand-cranked radios or lanterns, which can also function as chargers for other battery devices, or have a generator – and, upping the game of alternatives, a gennie that runs on multiple fuels.
We might have squeeze-activated ice packs we can blow a battery-operated fan across to combat heat stress, and plan for canopy beds and grown-up blanket forts to help reduce the amount of heat we need to stay warm.
We might have dark bags and solar ovens, propane stoves and grills, and various candle stoves for cooking.
We might have Pepto for whatever our water and food storage does to our guts, Imodium and Dulcolax as a backup, as well as some alternative maintenance and treatments for minor cases like prunes, tea/coffee, and dates, and mild farina/rice cereals, applesauce, and protein drink mix.
In our bags, vehicles, and homes we store not only water that’s ready to consume, but also chemical treatments and filters, and vessels we can fill if our primary springs a leak.
Super Sources
Hunting is one area ripe with alternatives for our plans and supplies. There’s already wide evidence and experience for us to weigh according to our own priorities, with gear and techniques full of alternatives just waiting to redeploy by preppers.
There’s that trusty standard shotgun, and all its options, but many hunters have a deer or pig rifle – sometimes instead, but regularly in addition to that shotgun.
Some have both a short, heavy-hitting, stable-flight brush gun and something designed to reach out across ridges, prairies, desert, or pasture. Others choose middle-road calibers that offer cartridge variety to cover multiple bases.
Some have a bow or crossbow for archery seasons. Others hunt very effectively with rim fires and airguns.
Some of those give us alternatives to big booms with a silent, effective killer and all the benefits they can have for a homesteader, hunter, and anyone else trying to avoid attention. Some give us alternatives to a shoulder-thumping Recoil Beast or expensive-ammo eater, giving us options for training and limited shooters.
Some use a handgun as primary for hunts, scoped or iron sights, both small game and large. Some carry a finishing gun along with their primary hunting tool.
Others carry close-range handguns or super-shorty shotguns for bears or self-defense – to include other outdoors-men like fishermen, bikers, hikers, and campers.
Those Outdoors Hobbyists, too, Give us Backups and Alternatives we can Apply
Some gear serves as-is, not only for wilderness bug-outs and survival, but any power-outage and grid-down or off-grid situation. Some gear is seen re-purposed by other interest groups as often as it is in its original field, or is used as an alternative until a field catches up to the interest.
BMX elbow and knee pads, rappelling helmets, and motorcycle knuckle-guard gloves improved tactical load outs, with official military gear catching up, not leading the way. It’s not singular (sadly). Personally acquired “other” gear and tactics are pretty commonly deployed long before it becomes regular issue.
We also see a lot of crossover in foods. Military to camping/backpacking to endurance athletes, one innovates and the others apply it. Then they’re catching up and expanding, or innovating anew, and it goes back the other way.
Preppers with crossover interests apply them, and they gain increased attention within that fold, further increasing the backups and alternatives we can apply. (Fad foods, too.)
It goes far beyond gunners and rations, though.
Bivy sleepers of both the sleeping bag and mini pup-tent types can offer us an alternative to more common tents and tarps shelters, or create additional layers of insulation and moisture protection when combined with them – or create even more layers of insulation and warmth indoors.
Netted hammocks and bug net around our hats help keep mosquitoes and biting flies at bay – in the garden and for front-porch sleeping in hot weather as well as out on the water or trails. Those mesh shields crossover with hunters’ turkey and duck mesh for the face and head.
Hunter’s camo options give us an alternative to military patterns, sweltering heat or frigid cold, across a wide variety of terrains.
Increased interest from outdoors types means pack rafts and inflatable kayaks (it’s a canoe) are much more compact, reliable, and affordable now.
They give us vehicle and home options for all sorts of things, be it a fishing platform, icy-pond and deep-mud rescue platform, dryer (-er, not dry) crossing of waterways, and options if we’re caught in high water from a hurricane, main break, dam spillway, or some other flood.
That gives us one more way to keep loved ones safe and get them out of harm’s way across a wide array of emergencies.
Rain gear, protective gear for bikes and ATV’ers, lightweight and compact tools of all sorts, off-roading vehicle upgrades, compact fishing kits, big-wheeled bikes and lightweight tow carts, eating habits, backwoods wheelchairs, speedy-refuel cans, comms devices and chargers – many apply to preppers, whether they’re urban or rural, whether they’re inclined toward either shelter-in-place or bugout survival.
Good-Better-Best
We regularly want a backup – specifically a backup, one that does the same job exactly or nearly the same way. Conditions ebb and flow, though, especially at crunch times. Alternatives that provide entirely different options add to our resilience and self-reliance in times of need.
Having both is the best of all worlds, making for more well-rounded preps all around. Happily, we have whole realms of possibilities that makes it pretty easy to accomplish both backups and alternatives.
Outdoor pursuits may have a lion’s share to offer, but we can find alternatives and backups pretty much anywhere. Sports of all types, permaculture, the re-purpose/up-cycle/re-use-it crowds, bio-mimicry in urban planning, and emergency response techs, shelters, and CnC cells are particular goldmines for techniques and tools.
History and the rest of the world are also excellent sources to apply to all arms of preparedness, both in terms of things that could derail our primary and backup plans, and coping mechanisms for when “normal” has left the building.

CAPE Shares A Message of Support for the AAPI Community
It is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPIHM), and, in the wake of a very difficult year for the AAPI community, it is more important than ever to celebrate and support Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the US. Anime is an art form that originates from and is deeply tied to Japan, and, frankly, Crunchyroll wouldn't exist without the artistry, storytelling, and passion from artists and producers all across Japan, as well as China, Vietnam, Korea, and beyond. We here at Crunchyroll are dedicated to supporting and standing with the AAPI community. We have made a donation to The Chinese Progressive Association, a non-profit based in our home town, San Francisco, dedicated to organizing and empowering the low-income and working class immigrant Chinese community in San Francisco.
Beyond that, we also want to celebrate the community! Behind so many of the anime, television series, films, and video games we love are amazing artists and storytellers who are part of the AAPI community. In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPIHM), we are proud to share Awakening, a celebration of Asian-American artists whose work has changed the world.  Directed by Peilin Chou, Oscar® Nominated producer of Over the Moon, courtesy of the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (CAPE).
Featuring: Daniel Dae Kim, Bowen Yang, Phillipa Soo, Ken Jeong, BD Wong, Cathy Ang, Jen Yuh Nelson, David Henry Hwang, Jinko Gotoh, Janet Wu, Henry Yu, Ronnie del Carmen, Sanjay Patel, Megan Dong, John Aoshima, Gennie Rim, Peilin Chou and Helen Park.

This past March, the morning after the incidents in Atlanta, like many I felt horrified, angry and completely helpless. I wanted so badly to take action, and figure out a way to contribute something positive, but I felt overwhelmed and paralyzed about what any one person could do in the face of such senseless acts and so much hate. After a day of reflection, as a filmmaker and producer, I decided to approach this the only way I knew how—by telling stories.
So I reached out and rallied some friends and colleagues in the animation industry (and beyond!) to create this piece. Awakening is an anthemic celebration of Asian America. It is a #StopAsianHate PSA that acknowledges the ongoing frustrations the Asian American community has faced, particularly over this past year, but at its heart, it is an uplifting and empowering piece celebrating Asian Americans, with a spotlight on artists whose work has changed the world.
Pelin Chou, Director
