Google’s first mobile chip is an image processor hidden inside the Pixel 2

Google left its first mobile chip out of its Pixel 2 announcement two weeks ago, but the first details have been revealed: it’s the Pixel Visual Core and its’ the company’s first custom system-on-a-chip (, SOC) for consumer products. The chip plans to accelerate the HDR+ processing that makes Pixel photos shine compared to everything else on the mobile market. It’ll make image processing smoother and faster, and Mountain View also plans to use it to open HDR+ up to third-party camera apps.

The chip is built into both the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL, but will lay dormant until being activated at some point “over the coming months.”

Peeking inside the Image Processing Unit (IPU), we see a chip that resembles a typical eight-core SOC. However, there’s technically a ninth core: a power-efficient ARM Cortex-A53 CPU in the top left corner. Those eight cores are claimed by Google to provide HDR+ performance that’s “5x faster and [uses] less than 1/10th the energy” of the current implementation thanks to its tailoring to handle HDR+ duties.

Google plans to enable Pixel Visual Core as a developer option in the Android Oreo 8.1 preview, before updating the Android Camera API to let third-party developers take advantage of HDR+.

The company will also be making more imaging and machine learning enhancements available on the Pixel 2 over time.

According to the employees, the flaws were likely fixed within months of the hack. Microsoft also tightened up security after the breach, walling the database off from the corporate network and requiring two authentications for access.

Google launches “Advanced Protection” setting to further lock down accounts

Google has announced the launch of a new “advanced protection” setting for Google accounts that makes it harder for hackers to break into your sensitive data on Gmail, Google Drive, YouTube, or any other Google property. The opt-in, ultra-secure mode is intended for truly high-risk users, including those that face the risk of state-sponsored, highly resourced cyberespionage.

Logging in from a desktop will require a special USB key while accessing data on mobile will need a Bluetooth dongle. All non-Google services and apps will be exiled from reaching into your Gmail or Google Drive. Google’s malware scanners will use a more intensive process to quarantine and analyze incoming documents. And if you forget your password or lose your hardware login keys, you’ll have to jump through more hoops than ever to regain access.

“This is basically an extremely heavy-duty way of locking down an account. Even for people with very limited technology chops, this is a way for them to have an extremely protected profile.”

At the moment, Advanced Protection is limited to personal Google accounts. However, this is open for any account that has a particular reason to be worried about hacks.

Google will be anchor tenant at Toronto innovation hub

Alphabet will be the anchor tenant at a site being developed on Toronto’s waterfront by local and federal governments and will move Google’s Canadian headquarters to the facility.

ZTE launches Axon M with two screens and a hinge

ZTE has launched the Axon M, a full-featured smartphone that happens to have two full-size displays with a hinge between them.

Specs-wise, it’s a run-of-the-mill Android smartphone. Its front screen is a 5.2-inch 1080p panel with last year’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 20-megapixel camera. However, on the back, there’s an identical display.

The M’s hinge allows the rear screen to flip forward and slot next to the main display to create an almost tablet-sized canvas. You can stretch the home screen and apps across the two displays for a larger working area, or run one app on each screen. You can also “tent” the phone, and mirror the displays so two people can see the same content at the same time.

According to ZTE, most of the dual-screen features are enabled with Android’s built-in split-screen functionality and has made sure that the “top 100” Android apps work on the phone. In the extended mode that stretches one app across both screens, the tablet version of the app is presented if available.

It’s also possible to stream video on both screens at the same time and switch the audio between them on the fly.

Each display is coated with Gorilla Glass 5, but you should still be careful with where you place it given the back panel of glass. The company says that the Axon M’s 3180mAh battery is designed to provide a full day’s use between charges despite the extra screen.

However, the extra screen does not spare you on the scale. The phone is 12.1mm thick and weighs 230 grams. For comparison, the Google Pixel 2 is 7.8mm thick and weighs 143 grams.

Initially, the Axon M will be sold with AT&T in the US and Docomo in Japan when it launches before the end of the year with a price similar to other premium smartphones.

Microsoft Surface Book 2 gets more power, 15-inch screen size

Microsoft’s Surface Book 2 has been announced with new processors, graphics cards, and slightly tweaked designs including a new variation with a 15-inch screen.

The Surface Book 2 steps up to the 8th-generation Intel processors, which essentially means that there are now quad-core options available. The 13-inch version comes with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 with 2GB of graphics memory. The 15-inch Surface Book 2 has the GTX 1060 with 6GB of graphics memory. There are a range of other configuration options, but prices for the 13-inch version start at $1,499 with the 15-inch version starting at $2,499.

Beyond the spec sheet, a ton of work has been done to improve the laptop that can’t be seen from the outside. The thermals have bene reconfigured to pump more heat away from the chips, with the 13-inch version being able to do that without fans on the tablet lid. There are fans on the base of the laptop and on both parts of the 15-inch version.

The hinge on both models has been updated and strengthened to be more sturdy while taking up less space. According to Microsoft, it needed to directly fuze the “fangs” that hold the lid in place to the hinge to make the 15-inch version more stable.

The keyboard deck has also been slightly tweaked to get cleaner lines. According to Surface head Panos Panay, Microsoft went as far to redo the areas around the cameras at the top of the screen to have fewer cutouts.

In terms of ports, Microsoft is finally acknowledging USB-C, including a standard USB-C port along with USB-A ports, an SD card slot, and the Surface Connector for hooking it up to external displays.

The company claims that both versions can get 17 hours of battery life on a video playback loop.

GM’s Cruise unit will be the first to test self-driving cars in New York City

Cruise Automation, General Motors’ self-driving car unit, will test its autonomous Chevy Bolts in New York City. According to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, the company will be the first to test Level 4 autonomous vehicles in the state.

“Autonomous vehicles have the potential to save time and save lives, and we are proud to be working with GM and Cruise on the future of this exciting new technology.”

The testing will be in Manhattan, according to Cuomo’s office, where Cruise has begun mapping a geofenced areas. All testing will include an engineer in the driver’s seat to monitor and evaluate performance, and a second person in the passenger seat. As part of the agreement, Cruise will also set up an office in New York City and begin building a team of employees.

Dropbox launches Professional plan for freelancers, creatives

Dropbox has launched a new Professional plan that’s aimed at those wanting a blend of the Plus plan’s extra storage and the business account’s extra features.

For $19.99/month, Dropbox will give you a terabyte of storage and some bonus features – the biggest of which is a showcase to package up your content. It could be a marketing packet, a customized application for a financial services pro, or a mini advertising portfolio to share with clients.

All of this is packaged into a pdf to deliver to the client in a nice singular package.

They are also dropping in Smart Sync, a previously business-only feature that lets you decide if you want to store files locally, in Dropbox, or both places. Users can decide on a file or folder basis how they want to store their files.

The service also offers integrated OCR to read text in scanned documents, and allows users to remotely expire a document.

Twitter promises to respond faster to people that report abuse

A internal email leaked by Wired shows that Twitter plans to do a better job at responding to users’ reports of abuse by “investing heavily” in improving its review process. The company also plans to toughen its rules around violence, hate speech, and abuse in an attempt to make its platform safer for users.

According to Twitter, tweets that “glorify violence” will be banned, instead of just tweets that make or promote threads. Its definition of prohibited “non-consensual nudity” now includes creep shots and hidden camera footage. And the company will also more thoroughly consider reports of unwanted sexual advanced.

“We would rather error on the side of protecting victims and removing this type of content when we become aware of it.”

To improve its reviews process, the company will focus on decreasing the turnaround time on reviews, giving users quicker responses.

Twitter also plans on putting hate imagery behind a sensitive media screen and take action on hate groups as a whole.

Intel to ship Nervana Neural Network Processor by end of 2017

Intel has formally unveiled its Nervana Neural Network Processor (NNP) family of chips designed for machine learning use cases. They previously alluded to these chips using the pre-launch name Lake Crest.

The technology underlying the chips is heavily tied to Nervana Systems, a deep learning hardware startup Intel purchased last August for $350 million. Intel’s NNP chips nix the standard cache hierarchy and use software to manage on-chip memory to achieve faster training times for deep learning models.

The Intel Nervana NNP prioritizes scalability and numerical parallelism. The team is promising robust bi-directional data transfer. Using a proprietary numeric format called Flexpoint, Intel says it can achieve higher degrees of throughput. And shrinking circuit size allows the team to supercharge parallelism while reducing power per computation.

Intel says the chips will ship before the end of the year.

Snap, NBCUniversal form studio joint venture for original shows

Snap and NBCUniversal are creating a Hollywood studio dedicated to creating scripted programming for mobile screens.

The studio joint venture will exclusively produce programming for the social-messaging and media platform. It’ll work with a handful of creative partners, with the first deal being signed with indie filmmakers Mark and Jay Duplass.

“We fundamentally believe that mobile is a new medium. Because that creative process is so unique, we felt there was a need for a fully dedicated entity focused on that.”

Lauren Anderson has been recruited as the studio’s chief content officer, previously serving as NBC Entertainment’s senior VP of current programming.

Anderson will be overseeing the unnamed studio with NBCUniversal Digital Enterprises president Maggie Suniewick.

JPMorgan Chase to acquire WePay payments platform

JPMorgan Chase announced Tuesday that it’s acquiring WePay, a Redwood City, CA-based firm that delivers payments-as-a-service APIs.

The acquisition will give Chase’s business customers access to a simple platform for embedding payment acceptance into their digital experiences.

“With WePay, Chase is taking the work out of payments for both our business clients and the software providers who serve them. We are powering payments for growth, so businesses can accept payments instantly, get paid faster, and never lose a sale. And we’ll give ISVs a payment facilitator-like experience without the overhead or increased fraud risk.”

After the acquisition, WePay and its employees will operate as Chase’s payments innovation incubator in Silicon Valley.

Facebook tests revival of status messages

Facebook is testing a new “temporary profile status” feature that will allow its users to post ephemeral, text-only updates of up to 101 characters, according to a company spokesperson’s confirmation to BuzzFeed News.

The feature began being tested globally over the last week. The ‘new’ statuses, which you can also keep permanently, are reminiscent of Facebook from yesteryear when the News Feed was blanketed with status updates instead of videos, links, and advertisements plastered on it.

Microsoft in final stages of Windows 10 Snapdragon PC development

Microsoft is now in the latter stages of testing the mobile PCs being developed in partnership with Qualcomm, with the two companies already in discussions with mobile carriers as part of the “second part” of the development process on how to sell and provision connectivity for the Windows 10 Snapdragon-powered PCs.

“The PC space and the phone space have been sort of in parallel universes for a couple of decades … what two better companies to bring these worlds together than Microsoft and Qualcomm?

“We’ve been working furiously in Redmond and with our partners in San Diego on this thing. We have hundreds of these devise now being used on a daily basis … we’re getting pretty far along in the development process.”

However, Bernard said the biggest challenge is figuring out sales channels.

“We have been engaged with a lot of mobile operators … talking about not only strategically where does this fit into the portfolio and opportunities it brings them, but tactically how do we get these things into the market and into people’s hands.”

British carriers BT and EE’s director of technology services Tom Bennett agreed, saying that operators need to work with tech companies to create a go-to-market and connectivity strategy.

“As we bring these two parallel universes together, doing that education in indirect channels is going to be quite a challenge for us as an ecosystem … it’s moving beyond the technology now into the execution in the marketplace.”

Microsoft’s vision is to have the PC always connected with an embedded SIM (eSIM) for simple activation of the device. However, this will require a fundamental shift in operators’ networks.

“eSIM is a fundamental change to the way that operators run their provisioning stacks, so it’s actually been a three-year journey to get our stacks to a state where we can provision eSIMs over the air.”

According to Bernard, Qualcomm’s efforts to ensure the always-connected PCs also have day-long battery life are also succeeding.

“One of the funny anecdotes is we handed out these devices to all of our dev directors and leaders across the windows org, and we started getting all these bug reports back… saying ‘the battery meter’s not working, it says I still have a full charge.’

“It turned out not to be a bug; it just has a great battery life. So people are getting used to this concept of having a device that you don’t have to charge, and at the same time, people are getting used to this notion of being always connected and having a device with that LTE connectivity built in.

“It’s really starting to resonate even amongst our own developers.”

According to Bernard, there is room for the Qualcomm-Windows PC suite to grow in the future, with OEMs showing a lot of interest in developing additional products.

“Over time, there’s going to be a portfolio of devices from different companies. I think there’s an opportunity with Qualcomm to have a range of form factors, price points, color material finishes, and so forth.

“We’ve had some great conversations with other OEMs too for future devices, and they’re very excited about bringing their own spin to the technology, so our goal is to enable OEMs to build a range of different price points.

“I think over time, we’ll get there, but I think right now we’ve got these core partnerships we need to execute on and be successful with, and then that will kind of enable us to broaden the ecosystem.”
