For shifters/werewolves, is there rules or social ettiequte for what title a shifter/werewolf’s partner is referred to as? Like, do shifter/werewolves only refer to their partners as Boyfriend/Girlfriend/Significant Otter 🦦 in the begining and then start refering to each other as mates when they’re ‘married’ or confident they’re gonna be together for the long haul? Or is using the term ‘mates’ just interchangeable with other titles?

Are there other cool social things regarding shifters too? How does hierarchy work? Etc etc…

Shifters used to be very rigid in their use of titles, especially hundreds of years ago when their focus was on building their packs to be as large as possible to keep the population stable. Nowadays the titles are much more lenient and more for show, save for the role of Alpha and Beta.

Mates used to be a single individual that a shifter would choose to have their children with and that would be a lifelong commitment. It was usually another shifter since intermingling was looked down upon until the late 1800's in the western pack culture.

Now, when a shifter chooses a mate, it's a sign of commitment and devotion, just not so life or death like it used to be. When a shifter claims someone as their mate, it's a public announcement that they have found their person, the one they want to carry on through life with. Essentially, it's the closest thing to marriage that a shifter can do before actually saying "I do". Many hold the title in high regard and will seek the approval of the entire pack before making the "claim".

Both individuals must agree in private and claim each other as their mates before making a public proclamation. (Joanna, Beth's mom, and her first husband never publicly claimed each other as mates.)

Some shifters won't even bother with a wedding once they've found their mate, but most still have a proper ceremony and go through the legal proceedings in order to gain the non-wielder benefits.

In terms of general shifter lore:

The first packs used to be made up of dozens of shifters, getting as large as 75+ members made up of mated pairs and family units. They became progressively smaller over the centuries as they integrated more into human society and didn't need to worry about producing so many offspring to maintain population.

The pack hierarchy has always had an Alpha, the leader and governing voice of the pack, and a Beta, their support system and liaison between them and members of the pack. The role of an Omega used to exist in early pack culture, existing as the Alpha's bedmate (other than the Alpha's chosen Mate) to ensure the existence of strong heirs to lead the pack later down the line. Over time, the role of Omega was phased out of pack dynamics. The name stuck around for a while when referring to the "weak link" of the pack, but was also eventually dropped. In the last several decades, pacs and shifters have been careful not to use the term Omega for fear of solidifying certain internet stereotypes.

While packs were transitioning between the large scale groups to more smaller units, shifters began to mingle with non-wielders and non-shifters. There was a surge of shifter children who were not born into a pack, but instead an isolated family unit. While this was fine for most, if the child's parents were to pass, they would have no shifter-oriented support system. The concept of "Pack Adoption" grew in popularity as a result. If an underage shifter was found in the foster care system without any connection to a pack, then they could be adopted by an entire pack that was located in the area. Since there are so many expectations to meet in order for two parents to adopt a child, the entire pitches in to provide stability for them instead of waiting for a single family to meet all criteria. While not completely perfect, this made sure that shifter children could be adopted out of the system quickly without waiting and risking being discovered. Claire was adopted by the Greene Pack when she was a child and took the name of the Pack as her own, rather than Knight's parents. It is more rare now, but pack adoption is still an acceptable method of taking in shifter children. Every Alpha in any given county, state, or region, must submit their pack to their regional counsel as a potential rehoming group for any child that pops up in the system. Claire's pack is still ineligible for another year, but after that, they would be able to adopt and child the Counsel presents to them.
