Wow, wow, okay. I don't know where to start.
The ghosts of the hound pits pub is one of the most amazing things I've ever read. I could feel the tragedy and the haunting atmosphere in every word, and it filled every moment with a bittersweet tone. I was waiting for the heartbreak to hit full force and when it happened, well, it was brilliant.
I already loved Billie, but you also made me love Cecelia in ways I can't explain. Let's just say, my soul is in pain and I have to lie down for a second to process how much everything hurts :)
No, but seriously, you're an amazing writer. Thank you so much for sharing your work!
😭thank you so much - aaa i'm really glad you enjoyed the ghosts of the hound pits pub!
i love them both too! cecelia is someone i overlooked myself on the first playthrough but when i came back to the game i found her really compelling, and wanted to do her some justice. to date it's the fic i've been most happy with, despite being doomed to not be as popular as something more fandom-palatable (more horror than romance; a rarepair; a F/F ship).
in a coincidence that made me laugh i've been (lovingly) accused twice recently of having a predilection for bad outcomes in my stories - i'm a big softie.... who admittedly does love high stakes & tension. i like the cathartic potential of fiction!
thank you SO much for reaching out, it means a lot to me :') <3

Hey I just wanted to say I loved reading about ur experience working in a lighthouse! It sounds like a dream job honestly. I was wondering if u could recommend any reading (fiction or non-fiction) to do with lighthouses and their history, if not obvs don’t worry but I just wanted to ask!
anon i am sorry that you now know what it is like to be my parents but i'm gonna have to let you down. the only lighthouse book i've read is lighthousekeeping by jeanette winterson which i didn't even like (nothing to do with the titular lighthouse, it just wasn't my cup of tea)
books i'm interested in include: Women Who Kept the Lights: An Illustrated History of Female Lighthouse Keepers by mary louise clifford, Lighthouse: An Illuminating History of the World's Coastal Sentinels by r.c. grant, the kingdoms by natasha pulley (takes place at least partially in a lighthouse, and, granted, i dnf'd the other natasha pulley book i read) and, of course, to the lighthouse by virginia woolf.
i'll take a look next time i'm at the gift shop or island museum for more recs, but you can also watch the 2007 documentary guardians of the night which we play on a loop. it's potato quality but there are a bunch of banger stories included!

I was reading this really good book (and I don't say that lightly. I'm super critical of books), and it was published in 2021, but it kept mentioning Goncharov? This was starting to mess with me a bit, especially since I was reading a hardcopy used book. I'm thinking, the timelines don't match for it to be a reference, but that word didn't exist before tumblr did all that, right? The book also deals with the concept of reality, so it was a bit coincidental. But for whatever reason I was determined to finish the book before I investigated.
Well, I just finished and turns out Ivan Goncharov was a real writer and I feel ignorant and uncultured.
Anyway, I really recommend The Anomaly by Hervé le Tellier. I'm trying to regain my fluency so I read the first 40% in French, but then I got impatient and switched to English. Disappointingly very American-centric though, so reading the original French didn't add too much I don't think.

orv's usage of symbolism is interesting because it rarely has symbols As Simply Symbols. a good 95% of the time, its symbols are often primarily plot-related mechanical stuff, like the fourth wall, or unbroken faith. they are things that move the plot along and are used as tools in-universe to solve problems. one of the genius elements of the skills/stigmata system is that those abilities do INCREDIBLE heavy lifting for characterization, by both being talents the characters can apply in ways that reveal who they are as people, and by being symbols that reveal aspects of a character by the mere fact of the character possessing them.
this is very unlike a lot of other stories! most of the time, if something exists in a work to be a symbol, the symbolism is its primary narrative function, and any other plot-moving functions are secondary or nonexistent. and most of the time, that's totally fine. orv has symbols that work that way too: the white and black coats (and by extension white page/black letters) and the squared circle. they're images that serve to inform the reader about integral ideas to the story.
but it's brilliant for a story that is primarily fantasy-action-adventure to take its mechanical plot items or skills, which are incredibly necessary to the progression most fantasy action stories, and then have them be incredibly symbolic. it's not new ground to break, either. this is something a lot of fantasy stories do. but it feels very unique because of how symbolically charged nearly EVERYTHING is, and how in-depth the symbolism often is! especially for the really major plot mechanics (fourth wall as ultimate example) they often serve as metaphor for a number of things simultaneously. it makes for a reading experience that is very engaging because there's always so much going on, and it often makes the reader feel clever for noticing it!

there’s so many ways that queerness exists in texts, unintentionally and intentionally, coded and uncoded and partially coded and baited and confused and limited and expansive, and then there’s whatever is happening with Hawkeye Pierce, M.D. of the 4077th MASH unit
#hawkeye pierce#MASH#there is of course also the constant mist of gender/sexuality queering that hangs over the narrative because of its structure#its structure as comedy (often subject to whimsical departures from acceptable gender/sexualities)#its structure as anti-establishment and anti-conformity#its celebration of non-conformist personalities and lives and its redefinitions over and over of madness and mutual aid#its structure - of course - as found family#its structure as an island in a sea of militant and fascistic surrealism and answering the questions of:#well what does the alternative to that violence look like?#so the idea of intentionality/unintentionality sort of doesn't matter#because it's creating a manifesto/ethos of sorts that speaks the same language as queerness#and it's down to the DNAs of its structures#(not even mentioning the structures of echoing the realities of those making it -- ethnicities - romantic lives - cultures and religions -#friendships and political beliefs - family structures created on the set of the show itself)#but yes hawkeye pierce is depicted as fascinatingly overtly queer and comedy is (like horror... which....) an acceptable space#for him to be this#(which -- when the horror and tragedy takes more of a front seat his funny-man queerness is somewhat diminished#but a. still very much present b. given an air of drama that legitimises it further c. underpinned by seasons and seasons of existence#d. embedded in that self-same DNA of the structures -- he IS the main POV character#which means he's carrying so much of that idea of non-conformity/civilish disobedience as good and right/whimsy/gender-and-sexuality/etc#so you see... there's whatever is happening with hawkeye pierce M.D.

Tangentially related to some of the discussion i posted earlier but quiet literally the first RW Art Month i participated I did it completely on whim like, one day before it started. And I mostly did it because I hadn't drawn a ton of rain world and wanted to draw more. Fandom presence was a lot smaller than and I was one of a handful of artists who did the entire thing. Fast forward and I still do Art Month and I've gotten to work with VC directly. But it was quite literally something I decided to do completely on whim that set the ball rolling, and for something a lil more niche and certainly with a lot more dev/fandom art involvement than most. It's really random how and why you might get noticed more than usual, especially with the "toss it into the search and hope it pays out' mechanism of Socmed
#t.extpost#and im hardly the fanciest art month artist out there so it wasnt even about being a jaw droppingly talented artist or whatever#and while artmonth for rw is still given a huge focus its also a much much bigger thing now with a much bigger number of participants#which is cool! its awesome how many people i saw do most if not all of last art month! and VC is really good about not just repping the#most popular artists or fanciest pieces#but theres So Much More there now and while its great for finding artists its also impossible to get Everyone in there you know?#Although they absolutely try#And this is like. one of the most fanartist involved devs ive ever seen in terms of both celebrating the art their fans make and actively#bringing those fans in to contribute#and its /still/ hard to get going just because thats how Posting is#i used to be more of a hk artist which is both a huge fandom and riddled with stunning artists but theres So Many#and niche fandoms are niche so youre more likely to connect with people but less likely to see a ton of engagement regularly -#probably best example i have for that was being briefly fixated on patapon.#Its just messy to try and find the hack that sets you up#just have fun and jump around and make what you like#get a sense of feeling for your style and some people will stick around for that vs. strictly the subject matter#others will look up the thing you switched too and some wont engage#you cant really control it#so have fun and draw that thing you randomly thought about at 2 am that doesnt match your blog#draw for that forgotten rpg you liked when you were 15 or draw for the 70 player max steam game you played for this week#you never really know what will happen#but its not really worth worrying about what will happen either

im happy my post is garnering discussion but honestly i wasnt around for 2018-2021 fandom on tumblr and i was mainly talking about how its kind of silly to get mad at people for portraying colonizer countries as mean, or calling it demonization and stuff. like its okay not to like personally portraying ur fav characters as mean or part of the state, but getting irritated at the fact that it exists or is popular imo kind of misses the fact that this… is the state and nation personification fandom. and its hard to say its not canon when canon did once portray the characters in uniform and at times involved in their state activities… like the early strips discussing western imperialism in china is literally ‘china being bullied by the allies’ ‘france wanting to grope china’ ‘china being treated like a maid’ etc etc like they were very much. the state LOL also china and japan’s canon relationship, as much as I have my issues with it, has an entire thing about china being stabbed by japan… i do feel like hetalia started out as a history nerd’s history exploration that blended humour with ‘what i find cute’ with satire etc etc, which inevitably involves illustrating the personifications as vessels of state and culture, and although the modern strips have deviated quite a bit… well, different people will approach this series for different reasons, right? Whether its serious or comedic content showing the characters as mean or imperialist or unpleasant, it’s not something that deviates too far from canon (if we take all canon eras into consideration) nor is it surprising given how history laden the topic is.
#diary#hetalia#hater tag#also have some issues with some things being called drama…#like i know some of u think of me and some others as drama stirring little devils#honestly i dont enjoy drama that much but ill become upset when i see things that i see as racist or insensitive…#because im of the opinion that this fandom requires extra sensitivity given the subject matter.#let people have fun#but#also be careful yk? i guess for me personally im always trying to be careful#when im out of my depth i try to talk to ppl with better understanding while doing my own research#and if ive written or expressed antyhing bad (which i certainly have even on this blog many times before)#i try to change my stances with new info… and like#this is important to me and its important for me to read ppls thoughts bc.#i know what its like to be treated racistly and dismissed. or to have things and history precious to me twisted#but anyways rambling aside… i guess what i want to say is i understand it seems annoying but#if you post something insensitive… and someone gets upset… then thats just how it is. hetalia is sensitive#again ive definitely posted bad insensitive things. ive been told im acting out of line.#and it sucks. but… sometimes you have to understand ur own irritation doesnt outweigh the hurt#and listen a little#sometimes i like things that i then find are insensitive or cruel. and id rather not engage with it than dismiss peoples hurt… or something#honestly i keep most of my whining private i promise JLKFHDJGLKFH BC FOR THE MOST PART I THINK I CAN TELL THE DIFF BETWEEN#when i have a real issue and when im just nitpicking#so i keep my more petty whining or basic stuff private#but if i see something egregious then i dont want to be quiet#and if a friend of mine (esp if theyre a kid) is upset or hurt by racism I dont want to be quiet

I am finally starting to see the light on just how robust all of the companion origin romances are (i.e. romances within the party outside of tav). While larian obvs had to work with sudden, abrupt story changes and losses, somehow they still managed to make all of their stories so intertwined that all possible romances are good.
Take Karlach for example:
• Wyll: Their stories are literal parallels; They both were following someone with power and influence, yearning to serve them and others to the best of their abilities—and were both discarded after being tricked into (literal) hell. together they provide for each other what was taken without denying themselves what has changed them (more devilish? so be it, i am stronger for it). She will guard what he loves without question—all he's ever tried to do—and he will stand against the forces that served to get them here, all she's ever wanted. They have both been forever changed to be more devilish (scarred, marked, horned, dehorned) but still yearn to thrive amongst their peers to no avail. He will always be a human with fangs and horns, and she will always be a tiefling with no horn(s), no heart. They are each other's only peers, the hunter and the prey.
• Shadowheart: One young girl is torn from the people she loves, her home, the authority figure she serves. She is marred by this person. Her parents are lost to her—she will never get to say goodbye, never get to hug them again. Her peers shun her, believe her dead or worse. Her only friends are lost to her (or so she thinks). She is a half-elf forcibly blinded to the ways of the world, sent on a suicide mission to secure her master's authority. She is a tiefling who has forgotten the joys of the world, escaping a suicide mission meant to secure her master's authority. They were both taught to selfishly strike out against the world to just survive. Together they find something alien to both of them—self prioritization without selfishness (I am not made to serve, i was made to be here. with you).
• Astarion: He is empty of life, cold and buried; She is being consumed by her life, toiling and burned. They were both, for lack of better words, Baldurian hot-shots in their youths. A learned magistrate and the head guard of an up-and-coming Baneite. They were both likely very corrupt. Astarion is obvious—his attack by the Gur was prob in response to prejudiced rulings. But Karlach was working for fucking Gortash. She's not an idiot, and while she certainly has a soft spot for the community, she had to have had a hand in his nefarious doings. Regardless, both of them are still furious about what happened to them, rightfully so—and neither is willing to accept (yet) that the version of them they left behind was not what they want now. They both want revenge, to kill the fucks that stole them away. And they both get it, only to find that they need to make a life after this, not to mourn the life before this.
• Lae'zel: This, like all Lae'zel romances, is a tale of two cities. Lae'zel wants to serve someone so badly, else she cannot prove to others (and herself) that she is worth the air she is breathing. Her culture demands it, history commands it, and she was born for it. But she can't do it. Not blindly. Karlach was a rough and tumble child on the streets of Baldur's Gate looking to eke out her livelihood without serving authority. But she couldn't avoid it, nothing she's good at could make money or earn respect except for serving as a guard, as a soldier. At first meeting, they both immediately respect and pity each other. Karlach likes seeing someone so proud of who they choose to serve, but innately understands that it is not a choice. Lae'zel likes seeing someone strong enough to command respect, but knows that she "should" want to serve someone too. They see themselves in the other. Neither understands, but they will. Karlach will see why Lae'zel is so desperate to belong, to serve—Lae'zel will see why she is too scared to submit.
• Gale: We both have a bomb in our chests. A divine being, omnipotent in all but name, placed it within you and quelled its fire so long as you obey and worship. The most obscene devil, queen of the Hells, ripped me from my home and gave me this, its flame fanned by servitude and snuffed by disobedience. Gale has lost himself to depression, Karlach to rage. He pours through books searching for the answer he will never find, but that's how he got here in the first place. Karlach smashes her way through everything, making ragtag enemies and allies along the way, but that's how she got here. Before anyone says some bullshit about Karlach being too "dumb" or Gale being too "pretentious;" Karlach is not dumb, she is naïve (which lends itself to dumb decisions) but wise. She's led an experience-rich life (encountered through misplaced trust and naivety) and has learned lessons from every single one, something she learns to temper within Gale as well. Gale has done many things but actually learned from very few of them, which is one of the reasons why he's immediately eager for the Crown. But he's also not an idiot, he's just vulnerable. Together, they balance each other emotionally and pedagogically.
Obviously this is focusing on the narrative aspects of these relationships—not the personal intricacies. But the majesty of this writing is that these are all characters written by separate people, forging separate stories with thousands of paths each. It's just unheard of.

i think... while i disagree with the notorious choices in terms of adaptations of Lolita I can understand to some extent a dilemma inherent in the text as it is (unreliable narrator and all) which is mainly that HH is by his nature a charismatic and attractive character in-the-fiction, by which I mean women are attracted to him in-universe, and he is able to garner various people's trust and so on and so forth, you know to the point of Dolores' mother proposing to him and all of that stuff. He doesn't "seem" suspicious or shifty to the outside observer.
The benefit of the written word and it being from Humbert's POV is that you do not see his charisma or handsomeness the way the other characters do, you see all of his ulterior motives and schemings inside of his own head. And even through the veil of his attraction to her you can see that Dolores is a child who he has power over.
I think if I were tasked to try to do all of that (the book) in a visual form the approach that makes the most sense to me would be to keep the camera off of Dolly as much as possible, make it largely a child POV camera angle even w/ narration from HH and being from his point of view as a work of fiction— and also to use a man who is not just handsome, but also very physically intimidating, by which I mean incredibly tall and capable of turning his expressions into grotesques. also like, very blue-eyed probably. pale blue eyed.
Obviously this still kind of betrays some of the element of like, he's not supposed to look untrustworthy necessarily but to a child in this situation shouldn't he look kind of, well, monstrous? And then when viewed by other characters he is simply affable, charming, perhaps a little mysterious or opaque but very much the "charismatic learned man" whose opinions are valued by society and who no one would ever suspect of a thing. because that's a constant problem IRL obviously. oh he was always such a smart young man. so promising. i can't believe he'd ever do such a horrible thing. blah blah blah
and then when the camera is inevitably on the child, I think it would be to emphasize the child's point of view, that Dolly is very young, frightened, sad, and isolated. That she cries herself to sleep every night. and honestly the book itself has those kinds of moments anyway even through HH's eyes where he has these brief, supposed instances of conscience, but obviously doesn't change himself at all, or stop.
idk i was just thinking about it this morning... how can this be done, how can that be done, etc. etc.

Hmmmmmmmmm.
Ok. We shall both go off base here then.
Your director’s note shall be- some scribbles I made about Keeley’s mom:
Tumblr media
This becomes more relevant later as we build towards Keeley’s story thread, which harkens back to her introduction in the script as ‘someone who is used to their book being judged by its cover.’ Keeley’s storyline here primarily focuses on the fallout from Jack/losing funding as well as the fact that Rebecca stepped in to help her out. She’s very grateful, but it’s definitely put her in a place emotionally where she feels like she has to earn back the respect she feels like she’s lost.
So as I storyboarded some stuff, it made sense that some of that would have started with her mom. Granted we know only a little about her, but given that this story is very heavy on the theme of families, everyone gets a turn!
My personal thought is that her and her mom probably have a lot in common. They’re very unique people with strong personalities and they make friends easily. But in the way that some mom’s do, Keeley’s mom saw her outgoing, creative, outspoken, funny, promiscuous daughter and tried to get her to ‘stop acting out.’ After all, society never let her get away with acting like that.
But in focusing on how seemingly ‘immature’ Keeley’s behavior was—especially in regards to her “career”—her mom has completely lost sight of the fact that her daughter has become a wonderful, caring, kind human who is truly a delight to be around, and who shows up to help the people around her. Keeley is exceedingly responsible, even pre-series she seems to be the only one of her old modeling friends who has a stable life. No small feat to be the outlier in your friend group—that takes a lot of courage and character.
Meanwhile her mom is…honestly the same as when Keeley was younger. A little emotionally immature, in a way that makes Keeley feel like she’s being emotionally immature back when they argue.
And all of this was just an exercise in me wondering if Roy or Jamie would have met her mom. And I decided for Jamie it would be a no—primarily due to him being a 23 y/o footballer. Her mom was less than impressed with meeting her new boytoy.
(Keeley herself was less than impressed with her 23 y/o football streak too—and in this scenario a lot of that was an echo of her mom possibly being right about her being immature. A book who’s used to being judged in many ways, our girl)
But then she started dating Roy and her mom did meet him. And—gasp!—was still unimpressed. She feels like Roy ‘lets her get away with too much.’ She still has this idea in her head that one day her daughter will settle down with someone sensible, like a banker or a doctor. Someone who won’t tolerate all of Keeley’s silliness and whimsy and her childish barbie pink house and her flirty outfits. Her moms convinced herself that then and only then will Keeley finally start to take her life (and herself) seriously.
It’s almost like nothing’s ever going to be enough for her mom.
