“My beautiful Gzarina… This is perfect; If Maligula couldn’t help me get what I want, maybe you can…”
Gristol still entertaining ideas of getting home to Grulovia & ruling with an iron fist, with the help of a talented hypnotist this time. The opportunity to use Delilah to help him escape psycho-isolation & pick up where he left off with his grand plan is so very tempting, if only she’d get on board with the idea! If Delilah could see herself the way HE sees her; beautiful, regal, & POWERFUL… perhaps she’d finally understand. If she could see how he sees himself too, in his mind, she’d know they were meant for this; meant for MORE.
Suffice to say this would mentally & emotionally decay Delilah. She’d never go along with this plan, unless someone were to do some mental tampering of their own…
I wanted this to contrast with my previous drawing of these two, where Gristol is still holding Delilah’s hand & gently kissing her knuckles. She looks flustered & happy vs here, as Gzarina, where she is hollow. Not sure what else to say other than this took me a long time to finish haha but it’s rare I start big pieces & I rly had a vision I wanted to see through! So in the end it was pretty fun 🥰

Glory to Grulovia
Tumblr media
Well I did it, I contributed to this lovely week of PN goodness and it honestly was super fun! :) Thank to everybody that enjoyed looking at my art and perhaps I'll post some more here soon. Until then tho you'll have to look at my stupid memes again. Anyway I love Gristol Malik, he owns my heart and I'm so glad I finally got to draw him because he was like top 3 characters I wanted to draw and never got to.
Happy Psychonauts 2 day!!

Day 4: favorite ost/Heartbeat
I know I missed yesterday, but that's fine because I didn't have anything in mind for that day.
There are so many great songs in the game, but Glory to Grulovia is definitely the best for me. I know it's full of propaganda, but it's so freaking good. It doesn't get annoying for me so I don't shut it off in the game, (to my sister's dismay) it has amazing vocals and an amazing melody, and Gristol joining in the end of it is so creepy and it just ties the whole thing together. I love it.

i was having a chuckle to myself last night about Gristol, and how his plans are basically:
Restore Ford Cruller's memory
Find Maligula
???
Profit
but then... of course they are, right? this is Gristol we're talking about. Fatherland Follies drives home again and again that he's still operating on a child's logic, a warped and reductive version of the world that he never bothered to grow out of. both of his memory vaults center on the images of his childhood, this idealized version of the past that he clings to no matter what. and that's still how he remembers Maligula, too - as this saviour figure, who rushes in to help him when he's in trouble.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: Two slides from Gristol's memory vault, Glory to Grulovia! Left: Gristol clings to Maligula's back as she summons waves to sweep away his assailants. Right: Gristol and Maligula waving from a balcony as the people cheer. Gzar Theodore brandishes a dagger in the background.]
like so much else, Maligula represents a return to this idyllic childhood - to the peace and simplicity of his youth, when he was free from worries and responsibilities. in his mind, he doesn't need to make any further plans - once Maligula's back, everything will go back to normal. Maligula will make everything better.
...is what i thought, but then i remembered this line:
Tumblr media
[Screenshot source. ID: Gristol, in Truman's body, bows on his hands and knees in front of the newly-awaked Maligula. The caption reads: "Yes, High Priestess! I am here to correct the mistakes made by my father!"]
and that's kind of interesting, right?
to be clear: this happens directly after Maligula sees Helmut-in-Gristol's-body, and recognises him. her line before this is:
"Little Gzesaravich! Have you come to pay for your father's sins?"
my first thought was that Gristol hadn't expected to still be in Truman's body by the time he managed to find Maligula, and this was him trying to placate her and buy some time until he could explain the situation. but watching the cutscene back, that's clearly not what's happening here. Gristol is answering as himself, and his response of throwing himself to his knees before her is, as far as i can tell, genuine.
so what is going on here?
in Fatherland Follies, there's this line in the ride narration that stuck out to me:
"Why didn't the Gzar help Maligula in her time of need? No one knows, but historians agree - it is Gzar Theodore's biggest failure."
other lines mention Gzar Theodore's "mistake", and it's wording Gristol himself echoes in the screencap above. evidently, he believes that his father abandoned Maligula, leaving her to her fate at the hands of the Psychonauts, and it was that mistake that lead to them being driven out of the country - that mistake which he seeks to correct. maybe he even feels like he has a debt to repay to her for his family turning their backs on her all those years ago.
the 'High Priestess' thing, though - that's kinda weird, and threw me for a loop the first time i played the game. it took me until my second playthrough to connect the dots, and remember how the room in the Lady Luctopus - Gristol's room - was full of Delugionist scribblings and symbols.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Screenshot source. ID: left, the walls of the hidden backroom in Gristol's hotel suite, covered in scrawlings of eyeballs and Maligula's name. Right, the pinboard from the hidden backroom. On its surface are photographs and newspaper clippings connected by pieces of string.]
i mean, look at this stuff! he had a whole conspiracy board and everything!
we learn very little about the Delugionists and their beliefs as a whole during the game, but i think drawing the connection here suggests two important things. one: that Gristol was in deep with this stuff. i don't know how he linked up with them - maybe via old family connections, or just good old-fashioned digging (we know he's skilled at worming his way into peoples' good graces, after all) - but it seems likely that he's begun to internalise their ideas, maybe even warping his own memories of events. and two: the Delugionists themselves are, if you'll pardon the pun, pretty far off the deep end.
like... i understand why PN2 didn't go heavy on the "mass-murderer cult worship" aspect of things, in the end, but man this is such a tantalising glimpse into the wider mythos around Maligula. Gristol is proud and haughty and thinks himself above everyone else; the fact that his first reaction seeing Maligula is to throw himself to the ground at her feet says so much about the way he's come to see her. he's not just trying to bring back Maligula, his childhood bodyguard. he's trying to bring back Maligula, the High Priestess of the deluge, the semi-mythical figure whose supporters believe even death couldn't stop. he doesn't even flinch at the way she confronts him, and maybe it's because he's bought in so completely to this deified figurehead, this idea of Maligula; more a living force of nature than a person. and it all comes back to the same place: an abdication of responsibility, not just to the person who protected him when he was little but to this avatar of floods and destruction. Maligula will make everything better.
i'd write more about my thoughts on the Delugionists but that'd be taking a hard turn into speculation, and this is already kind of long and rambling so i'd better end it here. but what an unexpected and evocative line, right? it's some of the only stuff we have to go off of regarding the Delugionists as a whole, but i think it does such a good job of hinting at the wider story - at teasing another layer to the mythos surrounding Maligula, one whose ripples we see throughout the game but which never quite breaches the surface.
#psychonauts#psychonauts 2#bored waiting at the airport so you get more psychonauts meta from me#the delugionists have been on my mind recently (because i Might Just have an upcoming au lorepost about them and also cults are fun)#so tossing my thoughts up here because people seemed to like the last few times i did this#and also it's my blog and i like to talk :)#related vent i HATE drafting posts in the tumblr editor because if you hit crtl+z to try and undo a formatting change#it deletes like half the post you just typed out#(yes i did it again while i was writing this. yes i'm still salty. why do i even bother)#what else... this is just becoming a disconnected thoughts dump#but if you've seen my posts you knew what you were signing up for when you hit the button to expand the post tags#there's new art coming hopefully this weekend if i can get it finished! it's more mermaid au designs#i'm two and a half weeks late for mermay but it turns out starting a new job and moving house doesn't leave you with a ton of free time#but that's okay it's never too late for mermaids#omg and artfight's coming up next month too! geez#i gotta make refsheets for the fsau trio because i would LOVE to get art of them#and this year i don't have a thesis to crunch on so i might actually have time to participate#oh and then in august i'm having top surgery! will make a proper announcement post for it at some point#i say 'announcement'. it's just a life update but it's nice to share#i'm super excited about it :)#i might end up blogging the process and recovery but obviously it won't be going here lol. i'd put it on my main#idk if anyone would find it useful but when i first started looking into surgery i had like very little idea about the whole process#and it's only through joining a bunch of online support/discussion groups that i managed to find more info and resources#so hey it might be useful to share? we'll see#our flight doesn't land for another fifty minutes so now i'm just writing in the tags because i'm bored#alright i'll proofread this and then post it when i land and have signal again. peace out yall hope your pride month is going well

I don't remember if you already said this (if you have I'm so sorry), but what exactly are William and the Deluginists trying to get out of Raz here? I know they want him because he's related to Maligula and believe that they're essentially gods, but I imagine they want something from him?
They want to restore Grulovia, and the world, to a so called "former glory" (theocracy) with them front and center by putting their god's lineage on the throne. They believe that once they achieve this, they will share in Maligula's court and live high and mighty above the world. They originally wanted to bring Maligula back to life, but they've found that she's alive but has become "weakened" by Ford then Gristol's interference and decided to set their sights on her kin, one of which has already shown great prowess in his psychic abilities and many stories about his feats already.

Spent the last few weeks making the unnamed capital of Grulovia in Cities: Skylines, and decided to make a fake brochure rather than just spam screencaps and headcanons. This one’s set roughly around the time Lucrecia was there, either just before or after the war.

I give you permission to talk about Rokel
Yay!
So what draws me to Rokel is how incredibly little we know about her. Sure, there are plenty of characters in Psychonauts that we only learn a thing or two about (mostly characters' parents), but there is almost nothing shown about Rokel.
Let's look at what we know for sure. We know:
what she looked like
her occupation (gzarina)
that she's Gristol's mother
Again, most characters' parents don't get a lot of characterization either, for instance, Oleander's dad, Butch. Similarly, we know:
what he looked like
his occupation (butcher)
that he's Oleander's dad
that he traumatized his son by killing his favorite rabbit right in front of him
But there is a big difference between Oleander's dad & Gristol's mom; Butch only appears in Oleander's mind, while Rokel appears in both Gristol's mind and Ford's. (she's also sort of mentioned in the newspaper article titled "Gzar Theodore Flees Grulovia with Family," being part of said family)
With her appearing in more places, you'd think we could learn a little more about her, but not really. She was there when Gzar Theodore was pushing Lucrecia and forcing her to rain on the protesters. Except we don't see her reaction to that. Whether it's to Lucy's actions or Theodore's. I double-checked, and I only found her in four memory vault slides: In "Glory to Grulovia" where she's on the throne with her family, two in "A Land without Caviar" where she's fleeing the flood with her family & then checking in at the Luctopus, and one in "Lucy's Letters" where she appears in a newspaper photo alongside her family. (see the pictures below)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She isn't even shown in the memory vault "The Deluge of Grulovia" which depicts, well, the deluge of Grulovia... (Yes, Gristol isn't there either, but this ain't about him. Actually, speaking of Gristol...)
We get to see how both Gristol & Theodore react to Lucy raining on the protesters and how they viewed her. Gristol sees Lucy/Maligula as his protector and doesn't care about the people she's washing away. Theodore is shown being resentful of Lucy when she first arrives and is beloved by the population, depicted holding a knife and looking at her angrily. He then uses her for his own horrible purposes but eventually becomes fearful of her and tries to have her killed.
But we don't see what Rokel thinks of Maligula. We don't see if she completely supports what her husband is doing or if she opposes it. Or if she's indifferent like Gristol. She gets no reaction to anything that's happening right outside her palace walls, save for one line of dialogue during the deluge.
“Get out while you can!”
And, well, can we even take this as something she actually said? The line is heard in Cruller's Correspondence, Ford's mental world. He wasn't there during the deluge, so he'd have no way of knowing what any member of the Malik family said. Even if Theodore & Gristol's lines are in character.
Other than what's been previously mentioned, I believe the only other way Rokel appears in Ford's mind is as a postage stamp with the smallest value of the Malik family's stamps.
This brings us to where she most prominently appears; Fatherland Follies. But even though she's seen a lot more in this level, she still doesn't get much to do. Every Rokel animatronic is right alongside Theodore & Gristol. She's seen standing with her family, fleeing with her family, and at her husband's deathbed, where she looks appears to be grieving. In the portraits we see, Rokel is painted alongside her family twice, and in the two pictures where she's alone, one is just a closer view of the other. (Contrast this with Theodore getting two different portraits of just himself.) And in all of these depictions, Rokel is shown with the same neutral pose & expression, except in the previously mentioned scene at Theodore's deathbed.
Also, in Fatherland Follies, Rokel is barely mentioned by the Voice of Grulovia and isn't really included at all in the song. She's only kind of in the song if you include the line "and all (the gzar's) family."
Last thing I'll bring up here is one of the things that gets me the most. Where is she now?
With most of the Psychonauts characters seen only in the past, we know what happened to them after that bit, or can make assumptions, going off of in-game info only (not the backstory doc). For instance;
Sasha ran away from his home, so his dad is probably still alive and working in the same place
Milla's orphanage burned down with the kids inside, so they likely all died
Oleander suffered trauma from his dad, so he may have simply cut ties with him out of fear
Gloria's mom is confirmed to have committed suicide
Loboto's parents are shown to not care about their "demon child" and probably stopped interacting with him when he was institutionalized or sooner
Bob's dad is hinted at being dead & his mom is confirmed to have died
Gristol's dad is confirmed dead
But there isn't a lot of information to go off of for where Rokel is or even what she did after fleeing Grulovia. Did she die shortly after her husband? Did she just decide to leave because she was tired of living in exile? Did she leave because Gristol was becoming too obsessed with Maligula? Did she want to go back to Grulovia? Did she try to talk her son out of planning anything? Did she try to stay in contact with him after leaving?
There are so many questions, and I want answers, please!

Random thought - i want learn more about delugeonists, like, how the heck lucy got full on cult?!
conspiracy theorists loooove to latch onto any information that they can potentially use to back up their own world view
the delugionists, ofc, function under the conspiracy that maligula could be revived and/or never died which wasn't... NOT true, but of course their information was limited in such a way that they probably never made the connections Gristol did
which while on the topic: I don't think the delugionsts are a team of one (Gristol), or else Milla wouldn't be able to sense them & Sasha wouldn't hold them in regard as a group of people
anyways -- Maligula was a very powerful, well known figure in Grulovia. She saved them from an invading army, and the Gzar himself showcased her as a symbol of the nation's power. Stands to reason that even though Maligula was also the one to destroy the capital, a lot of the folks who sided with the Gzar's dictatorship would want to believe very hard that she could be restored to her former glory.
The best piece of circumstantial evidence your not-former-royalty delugionst probably has to flaunt as proof Maligula's still truckin is the fact her tomb was found empty, which is basically nothing in the grand scheme of things, but I know people believe false, stupid stuff with way less credible sources

i have a feeling lucy had very little love for gelsin as in my mind all he talked about was defending the glory of grulovia and never once thinking about lucy and the last thing lucy told him was that if he walked out of the house to head off to battle that he should die on the frontlines, which did not sway gelsin away from war and he died there just as lucy spoke
Isn't that what Lucy was doing too though? She was defending Grulovia so much that she was willing to kill people (though I think she only turned into Maligula because of her sister dying, I think she would never have become Maligula if Marona survived, she would still be super traumatized from the murders, but not to the point of mentally snapping)
Like Lucy gave up so much for Grulovia, her friends and love interest, peace, her own morality. I feel like she would love someone who would put their life on the line for their home land. So I don't really see her hating or not loving Gelsin because he was dedicated to his country.
If anything, I could see her loving him even more and wishing to help, but not having a full grasp of her psychic powers yet so not being able to do much. It could also have been at the time that women were not allowed to serve, because we do know that Gelsin died before Lucy was recruited by Ford (at least that's what his wiki says) so over the years as Grulovia's civil war started it might have allowed women to fight or Lucy was an exception.
Or literally the war that Gelsin fought in was one that Lucy just didn't fight in, or she could have fought in it WITH Gelsin, but he ended up dying while she lived. I don't feel like she fought in a war before the civil war broke out, but that's just my take.
But anyway, I just can't see Lucy as not loving her first husband because of him being patriotic and wanting to fight in a war. If Lucy was a pacifist at the time I can see her being upset with the war, and maybe upset that her husband wanted to fight so badly, but she would still love him. You can obviously have your own headcanons though! If you think Lucy and Gelsin didn't have a marriage full of love before he died then that's a completely valid take!

So what about Nick? What his plans in datanauts?
Basically, Nick wants Maligula back, but in order to do that, he needs a specific virus to be reawakened. So that she and her Lalamon will be connected again.
Originally, I was going to have this pure human interaction where he gets someone to help recreate the virus, when I remembered... evil Digimon exist! Or Digimon that live by: "ends justify the means" because Nick Johnsmith wouldn't inherently want to be with an evil digimon despite the fact that he's an antagonist.
Nick Johnsmith has a Digimon partner that wants to restore Grulovia to its former glory as well.
His partner is: Poyomon -> Gummymon -> ClearAgumon -> Tankmon -> Knightmon -> LordKnightmon
Basically, his plan is still the same, with his LordKnightmon being the one to help him get the virus back online, treating it like a vaccine to what Ford did to Lucy's mind.

If he Delugionist Cult thinks that Maligula was an actual godess, does that mean Raz would be considered a Demigod by their standards?
Also, if the answer is yes, does Gzar!Raz consider himself a demigod?
Yes! And they're hoping to activate his abilities and bring glory to the nation of Grulovia by instilling a theocracy. Razputin believes so too, but he's starting to doubt it.... He's been told he needs to wait for the right moment for his ascension to godhood, but he doesn't even remember when its going to happen, and William keeps telling him it's nothing for him to worry about and it'll come to him eventually.
(Or William may force it to happen. ;) *nodding towards the device on his head*)

Otto Mentallis headcanon
I think Otto’s coping mechanisms are forced optimism, keeping busy with his goals to distract himself, and focusing on the future, all wrapped up in the task of making the new Psychonauts thrive.
Many people thought highly of the Psychic Six after they stopped Maligula. They thought highly of psychics and were willing to give the funds for an organization led by psychics, to deal with psychic matters! Governments were ready to accept them! I like the headcanon that Otto dedicated his entire energy to create the organization since it was the legacy of his family, who had found community in each other as outcasts. Now he and others could help other psychics become accepted by the larger population.
That is why Otto seems so cheerful in his friends’ memory vaults of the Motherlobe’s opening. He is distracting himself from his grief by focusing on his task. On the possibilties to bring new inventions to life, to help people, to gain glory! Because truthfully? The Psychonauts fed his ego at least a little since he helped create them. It’s also another aspect of his maladaptive coping.
But in the games’ present? The Psychonauts are in financial trouble!! The organization that he relied on to ignore his grief and trauma for might get dissolved. The organization that is the legacy of his friends, including those he lost...
... Said friends who all return and meet in the Green Needle Gulch in their old home, the Heptadome. Cassie, Compton, and Bob return from isolation. Helmut is alive, and so is Lucrecia. Ford’s mind is whole again. Helmut’s body is also still frozen in Otto’s Hyper-Ice. Ford used the Astralathe - another of Otto’s inventions which destabilized Lucy’s mind in the first place, making Maligula possible - to alter Lucy’s memories and break his own mind to hide the truth.
Even if you discount the possibility that Otto might have used the Astralathe on himself to lock away his grief, he’s still psychic. Psychic powers exacerbate trauma that much worse if unchecked. His trauma of the Deluge of Grulovia could be aggravated from these two directions.
Is it a wonder he might become desperate - masking it as entrepreneurship - to keep the Psychonauts alive? And that like with Hollis, but from his own mind, a Bad Idea to get money takes hold?
