From The Press…
So for a while my dm has played Gloryhammer music during games(good music would recommend) and tonight, I had the thought "Hey it clearly has some lore, I wonder what it's like. It probably has a wiki" and I was right on all counts and learning the lore only raised more questions and I had to drag myself out before my wiki dive went to deep because its lore is insane.
So one question I had was who is this wizard dude I see in the videos, and seeing a wizard on the popular pages spot I wondered which wizard it was from one video, spoiler he's both, kinda, well ones a clone who was activated by a future version of the other after he died in an alternate universe created when the drummer(?) blew up Mars with the two of them on it using his mechanical heart because the wizard was trying to summon a demon(?). I'd like to say the default aesthetic is generic over the top fantasy and the lore dive got weirder
*listening to Gloryhammer* I’m so lame I’m so lame I’m so lame I’m so WE ARE THE MASTERS OF THE GALAXY WE’RE THE LORDS OF SPACE DUNDEE
THE DESTROYERS OF REALITY
ON A QUEST FOR ALL ETERNITY
This year I really started to explore more ska, I'm definitely not the most knowledgeable and I'm certain there are ska artists/bands I'd like that I haven't discovered. Though if I'm honest, I'm surprised that We Are The Union aren't in my top 5 artists had a blast listening to their stuff this year.
If I had to pick a few recommendations from stuff that released specifically this year, I'd probably suggest;
Summer Everyday by TWRP (and tbh that whole EP)
Where Did All My Friends Go? by Mustard Plug (the song AND album)
Beautiful Mind by Brian David Gilbert and Tom Cardy
Black Cat by Red Rum Club
wednesday by Ethan Gander
Also, apparently I listened to 362 artists this year? that's almost enough for one every day. i also listened to 964 different songs???
Outside of Ska this year is definitely the most experimental I've been since 2016 when I first got spotify and was exposed to bands like Franz Ferdinand and The Fratellis.
I'm definitely hoping to keep this broadening of my horizons going in 2024.
One last thing, since Spotify started doing wrapped, this is the first year The Fratellis haven't absolutely DOMINATED my top 5 songs. (they still account for 19 out 100 songs aha)
Why do I always have some strange relationships with my favorite bands (usually metal but not always)? First Gloryhammer, then Behemoth, then Alestorm, then Powerwolf ... only Feuerschwanz and Eluveitie somehow hold on. And of course it is not that literally, but more ... I don't know how to put it xd There is something that makes the measure of a normal relationship suddenly become quite a confusion and then I don't know what to think about it all or I know, but it's more complex than what it should look like. Weird.
