homecoming weekend: Capture The Flag !!
As the sun begins to set on the west coast, Nemean Lion’s campus begins to welcome more guests into the Demicenter. Visitors with a ticket to Capture The Flag receive a bracelet that allows them entry into the campus’ Arena, a first for the public in Nemean Lion’s history. A magical portal created just for today grants them transportation from the Demicenter to the Arena, as NL takes its precautions and doesn’t allow a chance for them to snoop around other restricted parts of the campus. The bracelets they wear give them access to only the Arena, which shouldn’t be a problem, because who would want to be anywhere else during the main event?
Fit like one of the world’s best arenas, the stands allow for an audience of about 20,000, and today’s event is sold out. The center field is slightly larger than usual, however, and for now sits as flat, grassy turf. There’s a steady roar of the thousands of fans in the Arena, which include most of the demigods and their families in front row seats, here to cheer on their members. NL Administration, including manager and CEO, sit in box seats to watch over the members in their care and make sure this goes well. And just like advertised, the event is televised, and a magically experienced crew are all set up around the Arena, streaming live to millions of devices around the world.
Music and fanfare begins to sound throughout the Arena as the two teams enter the field, led by the two team captains. Falling in line behind captain Theo Choi of Team A are Juniper Johnson, Drew Suh, July Chin, Grace Marshall, Viola Lovera, Ezra Stokes, Narumi Kato, Jesse Garcia, Vera Marshall, James Koo, Minjeong Park, Regan Morgan, Alessio Castellani, Charla Lee, and Axel Green. On the other side stands Team B, comprised of Nick Spencer, Safiye Bennet, Cyrus Tan, Simon Hong, Mira Funetes, Prim Tran, Mayumi Ishida, Stormie Burbank, Tristan Day, Gigi Gautier, Carly Serrano, Pandora Liu, Ace Aguilar, Holly Sharp, and Kennedy Xun all captained by Cynthia Byun.
Once both teams stand ready on either side, Marina gives a cue, and a low rumble echoes throughout the venue. The turf begins to morph before everyone’s eyes, transforming the flat field into a forest landscape, the work of their own extremely skilled manager who’s power most people don’t see too often. Hills and trees begin to cover the distance between the two teams, until neither can see their opponents, a vast forest landscape shrouding each other from view. Clad in armor, donning their weapons, and with abilities at the ready, it’s almost time to begin.
Floating above the open roof of the Arena are honorary white marble thrones gilded in gold. Twelve, to be exact, though they sit empty as they always have on days of events like these, only ever a show of courtesy, a sign of respect to the gods that watch over them. Or, at least, that’s how it’s always been in the past.
An almost imperceptible hum begins to stir in the air, raising the hair of everyone’s arms, and somehow commanding a hush across the stadium. Marina Ren and Daphne Saengmai share a surprised but knowing glance just as light begins to shine bright from the skies. In a golden haze, ethereal figures begin to materialize in the noble thrones above the Arena, though not every seat becomes occupied, as everyone below counts six otherworldly figures. Their faces are somehow shrouded by both shadow and light, features undetectable, and to the mortals they have no idea who is who, only that for almost all of them, they’re in the presence of gods for the very first time. The demigods, however, know the order of those thrones by heart, and know which gods now watch above them.
Demeter. Ares. Apollo. Artemis. Aphrodite. Hermes.
Marina smiles once up at them, takes a steadying breath, then brings her attention back down to the field. She gives the signal, a horn blows, and the game begins.
Team A sprints into action, sending its slew of offensive players into the forest. Theo Choi leads them, weapon in hand, running through the forest to act as the first barrier of defense, and as soon as she finds members from the other team, her sword clashes with Mayumi Ishida, who leads offense as well for Team B.
The Team A captain is flanked by July Chin and Jesse Garcia, who though not heroes, hold their own against Mayumi and her own backup, Mira Funtes, who are unfortunately outnumbered. Besides, this first scrap is only the first defense.
The two huntresses of Team B, Gigi Gautier and Ace Aguilar use their tracking abilities and experience from training with the hunt to dart quickly and quietly through the forest, looking for the easiest pathway to Team A’s red flag for the rest of their teammates, then throw an arrow into the sky as signal. They have to be excellent, after all, their lady is watching.
Their teammates, Safiye Bennet and Stormie Burbank see the signal and begin heading towards the direction, escaping most of the scuffle in the middle of the Arena. Grace Marshall, propelled in higher view with her aerokinesis, catches it too and sends a signal to her own teammate. Ezra Stokes holds a piece of tech in his hands as he runs towards Grace’s signal, the device able to scan for heat signatures and when it picks up the daughter of Aphrodite and daughter of Dionysus heading toward what should be a clear path, they come head to head with him and Viola Lovera, ready for combat.
Thankfully, Simon Hong of Team B had also caught his team’s signal, and darts past them unseen, using his shadow travel for increments at a time. He gets to the clearing of Team A’s flag and then finally to the flagpole itself. He grabs the opponent’s bright red flag, about to step into his shadow travel to get it back to his side of the field, but before he can make it out, gets clothes-lined by Alessio Castellani and a broad-staff, who tries to wrench his team’s flag out from his grasp.
Though her teammate is down, Holly Sharp comes upon the scene and knows the objective is victory and grabs the red flag from Simon, and before anyone can stop her, begins to use her enhanced speed to get out of danger’s way and head back into her team’s direction.
In the middle of the forest, Team A’s Minjeong Park, Vera Marshall, and Regan Morgan are tucked behind tree trunks, peeking out to sling arrows across the way, aimed at the trunks hiding their opponents, Pandora Liu and Tristan Day, who fire arrows back just as quickly.
But when a well-hidden Axel Green conjures up some sunlight in Tristan’s face, the Team B archer misfires, hitting Holly in the thigh on her journey back, and everyone springs into action for the flag in her hand.
When the first member of Team A makes it to the clearing that holds Team B’s blue flag, James Koo finds it unguarded, and foolishly begins to reach for it. But a very quiet-footed and stealthy Carly Serrano pops up from seemingly nowhere and lulls him into a gentle sleep before he can do it. This strategy might’ve continued to work if Narumi Kato hadn’t been expertly observing from the treeline, and dashes in next, knocking Carly to the ground with a well-timed shove before she can stop him from grabbing the blue flag.
However, Nick Spencer also springs from the treeline and races after him into the forest, attempting to protect his team’s flag. The two boys catch each other and parry blows and strikes, and just as Nick is about to take the upper hand, Drew Suh and Charla Lee of Team A help their teammate.
Noticing their teammate is in need, Kennedy Xun joins the fray and attempts to sword fight with the rest of them, but quickly ends up knocked harshly back by Charla, tripping on a tree root and spraining their ankle in the process, down for the count. Nick stops to help his friend, but not before focusing hard on Drew who now has the flag and mind controlling him into dropping it. It works, though thanks to his limits, it also sends him down.
Prim Tran of Team B leaps into view, running towards her team’s blue flag to try to save it, and that’s precisely when Team A’s Juniper Johnson descends like a bat out of hell. Donned in black streaks of war-paint on her cheeks that absolutely no one asked her to wear, she charges terrifyingly towards the blue flag, butting Prim with her shield to block her, and snatches it up, running back in the direction of her team’s field.
She’s a mighty opponent, ditching the shield and brandishing her combat knives like a demon, she makes it past Cyrus Tan who attempts to block her with a wave of water from the small stream she leaps over.
She makes it past the middle of the field where the largest cluster of demigods still fight over the red flag, zipping past, only a passing thought to those in the brawl who don’t notice the royal blue cloth in her clutch.
When she finally hits the clearing, finding almost no one there, she’s nearly victorious. Until, previously hidden in shadow, emerges Cynthia Byun, longsword in hand. Team B’s captain, having been lurking with her umbrakinesis, uses this one last opportunity to keep Team A from winning. Though her opponent is a graduated hero, and this captain is only in training, they exchange blows almost well-matched. Cyntha’s longsword clangs time and time again with Juniper’s combat knives, managing to disarm one of them and slash an clean streak against the daughter of Hecate’s upper arm.
Expending one last feat of strength, Juniper uses some magic to cast up an illusion of shadow, as if she might have duplicated Cynthia’s own power, and it confuses her opponent and shields herself just enough to buy the one second she needs to fake in one direction and the lunge toward the golden flagpole. Cynthia, only allowing herself that one brief moment of doubt, dashes forward with her longsword in the direction she knows Juniper would have chosen, feeling her blade connect on the downstroke with the flesh of Juniper’s leg. But it’s just too far and just too late. Juniper has secured the other team’s blue flag onto the golden pole.
A triumphant horn sounds, and the speakers blare.
“Game! Team A has won this match of Capture The Flag!”
The crowd erupts into roaring cheers, Team A celebrates as Team B accepts the loss, the foliage and terrain of the landscape morphs back into a grassy field as the speakers continue to announce the victory.
Healers begin to jog onto the field, tending to the wounds and injuries of all the players, and Marina has already made her way down, beginning to congratulate and shake the hands of the victors, and thank the defeated team for a job well done.
The cameras pick up the crowd happily cheering in support, the pridefully exhausted faces of all the team members, and Marina’s smiling face thanking everyone for coming out tonight as music continues to sound and confetti falls all around the glamorous Arena. The view of the lens pans up to try to catch a glimpse of the gods above, but apart from a lingering light they leave behind, they’re already gone.
Game well played! Rest up, demigods, enjoy the night with your families, and we’ll see you all for the Homecoming Dance tomorrow!

The Start of Something “Good”
Tumblr media
The gang decided it was time to tear up Waterdeep in Dragon Heist
Tumblr media
They all met as level-1s in the Yawning Portal for some drinks and shenanigans. Not long into the night, our resident bard used a Thunderclap spell to break up a fight between a half-orc regular and local thugs.
Great for them (rolling a successful DC (not shown))
Tumblr media
Bad for me (first roll of the night) for the thug who tried to escape a face beating from Yagra, the half-orc.
However, all of the excitement garnered some unwanted attention...
Tumblr media
As the thugs hastily make their escape, a troll emerged from Undermountain. A group of stirges have used the troll as a smorgasbord, but they were ready for some new blood (no pun intended). Our wolf born homebrew made short work of the attacking stirges, while the rest of the party witnessed Durnan, the tavern owner, make short work of the troll.
Tumblr media
In the aftermath, the party was greeted by Volothamp Geddarm, a traveling writer and chronicler (self-imposed, of course). He made a deal with the party for ten dragons (gold pieces. Yes, I was disappointed as well) for the knowledge of whereabouts of his friend, Floon Blagmaar.
Tumblr media
Imagine. The gang with this times ten..........
Apparently, the two had been partying and gambling in the Dock Ward two nights prior; a shady hole-in-the-wall called the Skeward Dragon. He left him early in the evening and hasn’t heard of him since, so he is fearing the worst. The party obliges, and the hunt for Floon is on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Dock Ward is a fisherman’s paradise. It rests directly on the Sword Coast, where trade and commerce is convinently possible. Unfortunately, our story takes place at the end of Uktar (November in the Gregorian calendar), so winter is in full force, leaving the streets covered in blankets of snow and a chill wind coming in from the ocean. It does not deter the gang, nor the vicious gang war that is taking over the streets of Waterdeep.
The gang happens upon the City Guard interrogating three thugs amist a dozen corpses. Our Paladin used his Order of the Gauntlet badge, which gave some information about the tensions between the Xanathar Guild and the Zhentarim. The party left and continued to the Dragon.
A stuffed beholder hanging in the window of the Old Xoblob Shop caught the eyes of the passing adventurers. Curious, they entered to find what could be described as the Spencer’s of Waterdeep; a useless knickknack shop with a single shopkeeper:
Tumblr media
A deep gnome that ironically changed his name to match the store: Old Xoblob. The gang decided to take a look around, inspecting the beholder and discovering it was similar to a tracking device. While one party member purchased a voodoo doll for the dog familiar, a charm spell was attempted on Xoblob to ascertain the exact effect of the beholder, which failed.
So, they decided to do the only thing they knew how to do next:
They stole the beholder.
Trigger initiative. The fisherman of the group snagged Xoblob in his fishing net, allowing the party to escape. However, they should’ve ran further away than just the next alley over. Not long after, two members of the Xanathar Guild appeared and demanded the return of the beholder.
Trigger initiative part 2. The wolf born cut one bandit down to size, then the other was given the Ace Ventura treatment: an arrow to one knee, and a spear to the other.
Tumblr media
Two drunken fishermen witnessed this, so they ran off to alert the guards, which cut the interrogation short. The only information they extracted was how the feud between the Zhentarim and Xanathar started: a keepsake of Xanathar went missing, presumably taken by the Zhentarim. Xanathar slaughtered their peace party, ending the impending truce between the two.
With that information, the thug was released, who ran right into the approaching guards. An easy escape, right?
Wrong. Remember, it’s winter. Winter brings snow. Snow leaves tracks. The party split like buckshot, which allowed everyone to effectively avoid, and as one PC did, intimidate the guards.
The gang met up at the Skeward Dragon. Think Moe’s from the Simpsons: a small, after-work bar where fishermen come to drink and stare blankly at the bar before them. With the parting of some gold, the bartender said that Floon was here two nights ago with Volo. After Volo had left, Floon met another friend: Raenar Neverember, the son of the former Open Lord of Waterdeep. He said the two continued to drink and cause trouble, which followed them after they left.
“They look to be members of the Zhentarim, which are known to frequent a warehouse on Candle Lane. Just look for the snake symbol on the door.”
So, what happens next? Will the gang find Floon and get paid? How bad will the repercussions be for intimidating the City Guard?
TUNE IN NEXT WEEK TO FIND OUT!!!!

The Boys in the Boat (Young Readers Adaptation): The True Story of an American Team's Epic Journey to Win Gold at the 1936 Olympics Audiobook
[Book] The Boys in the Boat (Young Readers Adaptation): The True Story of an American Team's Epic Journey to Win Gold at the 1936 Olympics Audiobook by Daniel James Brown
The #1 New York Times bestseller about the Greatest Generation freshly adapted for the next generation.   For readers of Unbroken, out of the depths of the Great Depression comes the astonishing tale of nine working-class boys from the American West who at the 1936 Olympics showed the world what true grit really meant. With rowers who were the sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the University of Washington’s eight-oar crew was never expected to defeat the elite East Coast teams, yet they did, going on to shock the world by challenging the German boat rowing for Adolf Hitler.   At the center of the tale is Joe Rantz, a teenager without family or prospects, whose personal quest captures the spirit of his generation—the generation that would prove in the coming years that the Nazis could not prevail over American determination and optimism.   This deeply emotional yet easily accessible young readers adaptation of the award-winning #1 New York Times bestseller features never-before-seen photographs, highly visual back matter, and an exclusive new introduction.

Public Enemies (2009)
Biography, Crime, Drama |
Public Enemies is a American biographical crime drama film directed by Michael Mann who co-wrote the screenplay with Ronan Bennett and Ann Biderman. It is an adaptation of Bryan Burrough’s non-fiction book Public Enemies: America’s Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933–34.
Set during the Great Depression, the film chronicles the final years of the notorious bank robber John Dillinger as he is pursued by FBI agent Melvin Purvis, Dillinger’s relationship with Billie Frechette, as well as Purvis’ pursuit of Dillinger’s associates and fellow criminals Homer Van Meter and Baby Face Nelson.
In 1933, John Dillinger infiltrates Indiana State Penitentiary and assists in the jailbreak of his crew. During the firefight, his mentor Walter is shot and killed by the prison guards. Dillinger and company head for a nearby farm, where they change clothes and eat before driving to a safe house on the east-side of Chicago.
After killing Charles Floyd, FBI agent Melvin Purvis is promoted by J. Edgar Hoover to lead the hunt for Dillinger. Purvis shares Hoover’s belief in using modern methods to battle crime, ranging from cataloging fingerprints to tapping telephone lines.
In between a series of bank robberies, Dillinger meets Billie Frechette at a restaurant and impresses her by buying her a fur coat. Frechette falls for Dillinger even after he reveals his identity, and the two become inseparable.

Lecture II: Suggestions And Perversions Of The Rite
2.3 - A New Nature Through New Blood
It was a primeval idea, of universal sway, that the taking in of another's blood was the acquiring of another's life, with all that was best in that other's nature. It was not merely that the taking away of blood was the taking away of life; but that the taking in of blood was the taking in of life, and of all that that life represented. Here, again, the heart, as the fountain of blood, and so as the center and source of life, was pre-eminently the agency of transfer in the acquiring of a new nature.
Herodotus tells us of this idea in the far East, twenty-four centuries ago. When a Scythian, he said, killed his first man in open warfare, he drank in his blood as a means of absorbing his fairly acquired life; and the heads of as many as he slew, the Scythian carried
Berwick's Daily Life and Origin of Tasmatnam, p. 89; cited in Spencer's Des. Soc., III., 43,
in triumph to the king; 1 as the American Indian bears away the scalps of his slain, today. Modern historians, indeed, show us other resemblances than this between the aboriginal American and the ancient Scythian.
The Jesuit founder of the Huron Mission to the American Indians, "its truest hero, and its greatest martyr," was Jean de Brebeuf. After a heroic life among a savage people, he was subjected to frightful torture, and to the cruelest death. His character had won the admiration of those who felt that duty to their gods demanded his martyrdom; and his bearing under torture exalted him in their esteem, as heroic beyond compare." He came of a noble race," says Parkman, 2 "the same [race], it is said, from which sprang the English Earls of Arundel; but never had the mailed barons of his line confronted a fate so appalling, with so prodigious a constancy. To the last he refused to flinch, and 'his death was an astonishment to his murderers.'"
"We saw no part of his body," wrote an eye-witness, 3 "from head to foot, which was not burned [while he was yet living], even to his eyes, in the sockets of which these wretches had placed live coals." Such manhood as he displayed under these tortures, the Indians could appreciate.
Hist., IV, 64
Jesuits in No Am. in 17th Cent., p. 389 f.
Ragueneau; cited by Parkman.
Such courage and constancy as his, they longed to possess for themselves. When, therefore, they perceived that the brave and faithful man of God was finally sinking into death, they sprang toward him, scalped him, "laid open his breast, and came in a crowd to drink the blood of so valiant an enemy; thinking to imbibe with it some portion of his courage. A chief then tore out his heart, and devoured it."
Not unlike this has been a common practice among the American Indians, in the treatment of prisoners of war. "If the victim had shown courage," again says Parkman, concerning the Hurons, "the heart was first roasted, cut into small pieces, and given to the young men and boys, who devoured it, to increase their own courage." 1 So, similarly, with the Iroquois. 2 And Burton says of the Dakotas: 3 "They are not cannibals, except when a warrior, after slaying a foe, eats, porcupine-like, the heart or liver, with the idea of increasing his own courage." Schomburgk, writing concerning the natives of British Guiana, says: "In order to increase their courage, and [so their] contempt of death, the Caribs were wont to cut out the heart of a slain enemy, dry it on the fire, powder it, and mix the powder in their drink." 4

The native Australians find, it is said, an inducement to bloodshed, in their belief like that of the ancient Scythians that the life, or the spirit, of the first man whom one slays, enters into the life of the slayer, and remains as his helpful possession thereafter. 1 The Ashantee fetishmen, of West Africa, apparently acting on a kindred thought, make a mixture of the hearts of enemies, mingled with blood and consecrated herbs, for the vivifying of the conquerors. "All who have never before killed an enemy eat of the preparation; it being believed that if they did not, their energy would be secretly wasted by the haunting spirits of their deceased foes." 2 The underlying motive of the bloody "head-hunting" in Borneo, is the Dayak belief, that the spirits of those whose heads are taken are to be subject to him who does the decapitating. The heads are primarily simply the proof like the Indian's scalps that their owner has so many lives absorbed in his own. 3
A keen observer of Fellaheen life in Palestine has reported: 4

Beecham's Ashantee and the Gold Coast, p. 211; cited in Spencer's Des Soc., IV , 33.
See Tyler's Primitive Culture, I., 459; also Bock's Head Hunters of Borneo, passim.
Mis. Finn's "Fellaheen of Palestine" in Surv. of West. Pal. "Special Papers," p, 360.
"There is an ugly expression used among the fellaheen of South Palestine, in speaking of an enemy slain in war 'Dhabbahhtho bisnany' ('I slew him with my teeth') l; and it is said that there have been instances of killing in battle in this fashion by biting at the throat. In the Nablous district (Samaria), where the people are much more ferocious, the expression is, 'I have drunk his blood'; but that is understood figuratively."
An ancient Greek version of the story of Jason, telling of that hero's treatment of the body of Apsyrtos whom he had slain says: "Thrice he tasted the blood, thrice [he] spat it out between his teeth;" and a modern collator informs us that the scholiast here finds "the description of an archaic custom, popular among murderers." 2 This certainly corresponds with the Semitic phrases lingering among the Fellaheen of Palestine.
In the old German epic, the Nibelungen Lied, it is told of the brave Burgundians, when they were fighting desperately in the burning hall of the Huns, that they were given new courage for the hopeless conflict by drinking the blood of their fallen comrades; which "quenched their thirst, and made them fierce." 3
This is Mrs. Finn's rendering of it; but it should be "I sacrificed him with my teeth." The Arabic word is obviously dhabaha (أضحية), identical with the Hebrew zabhakh (לְזַבֵּחַ) "to sacrifice."
Lang's Custom and Myth, p. 95 f.; also Grimm's Household Tales p. lxvni.
Cox and Jones's Pop. Rom. of Mid. Ages, p. 310.
With their added life, from the added blood of heroes, they battled as never before.
"It strung again their sinews, and failing strength renewed. This, in her lover's passion, many a fair lady rued." 1
Is there not, indeed, a trace of the primitive custom thus recognized in all quarters of the globe of absorbing the life of a slain one by drinking in his blood, in our common phrase, "blood-thirstiness," as descriptive of a life-seeker? That phrase certainly gains added force and appropriateness in the light of this universal idea.
It is evident that the wide-spread popular belief in nature-absorption through blood-appropriation, has included the idea of a tribal absorption of new life in vicarious blood. Alcedo, a Spanish-American writer, has illustrated this in his description of the native Araucanians of South America. When they have triumphed in war, they select a representative prisoner for official and vicarious execution. After due preparation, they "give him a handful of small sticks and a sharp stake, with which they oblige him to dig a hole in the ground; and in this they order him to cast the sticks one by one, repeating the names of the principal warriors of his country, while at the same time the surrounding soldiers load these abhorred names with the bitterest execrations.
Lettsom's Nibel. Lied, p. 373.
He is then ordered to cover the hole, as if to bury therein the reputation and valor of their enemies, whom he has named. After this ceremony, the toqui, or one of his bravest companions to whom he relinquishes the honor of the execution, dashes out the brains of the prisoner with a club. The heart is immediately taken out, and presented palpitating to the general, who sucks a little of the blood, and passes it to his officers, who repeat in succession the same ceremony." 1 And in this way the life of the conquered tribe passes, symbolically, into the tribal life of the conquerors.
Burckhardt was so surprised at a trace of this idea in Nubia, that he could hardly credit the information concerning it; "although several persons asserted it to be a fact," he says; and he "heard no one contradict it." 2 As he learned it: "Among the Hallenga, who draw their origin from Abyssinia, a horrible custom is said to attend the revenge of blood. When the slayer has been seized by the relatives of the deceased, a family feast is proclaimed, at which the murderer is brought into the midst of them, bound upon an angareyg; and while his throat is slowly cut with a razor, the blood is caught in a bowl, and handed round amongst the guests;
Thompson's Alerdo Geog. and Hist. Dict. of America, I., 408; cited in Spencer's Des. Soc., VI., 19.
Travels in Numbia, p. 356.
every one of whom is bound to drink of it, at the moment the victim breathes his last" The forfeited life of the murderer here seems to be surrendered to, and formally appropriated by, the family, or clan, which he had, to the same extent, depleted of character and life.
A practice not unlike this is reported of the Australians, in their avenging the blood of a murdered person. They devour their victims; who are selected from the tribe of the murderer, although they may be personally innocent of the murder. The tribe depleted by the murder replaces its loss by blood which is life from the tribe of the murderer. Indeed, "when any one of a tribe [in New South Wales] dies a natural death, it is usual to avenge [or to cancel] the loss of the deceased by taking blood from one or other of his friends." 1 In this way, the very life and being of those whose blood is taken, go to restore to the bereaved ones the loss that death has brought to them.
Strange as this idea may seem to us, its root-thought, as a fact, is still an open question in the realm of physiological science. The claim is positive, in medical works, that insanity has been cured by the transfusion of a sane man's blood; 2
Trans, of Ethn. Soc., II, 246, and Angas's Austr. and New Zeal., I, 73, 227, 462, cited in Spencei's Des. Soc. Ill , 26.
See Dict. Med et Chir. Prat, Art. "Transfusion"; also Roussel's Transf. of Blood, pp. 78-88.
that a normal mind has been restored, through a normal life gained in new blood. Moreover, the question, how far the nature, or the characteristics, of an organism, are affected, in blood transfusion, by the nature, or the characteristics, of the donor of the transfused blood, is by no means a settled one among scientists. Referring to a series of questions in this line, propounded by Robert Doyle, more than two centuries ago, Roussel has said, within the past decade: "No one has been able to give any positive answers to them, based upon well-conducted operations"; and, "they still await solution in 1877, as in 1667." 1

Guns named for Showdown, Giants drop big name
Tumblr media
PORT Adelaide has regained dynamo Chad Wingard and recalled midfield bulls Sam Powell-Pepper and Tom Rockliff for Saturday night's Showdown clash at Adelaide Oval. Wingard comes back after a hamstring injury, while Powell-Pepper and Rockliff bolster a midfield that was outclassed by West Coast last week, the duo having collected 25 and 31 possessions in last week's 24-point loss to Norwood in the SANFL.
Tumblr media
PORT Adelaide has been bolstered by the return of dynamo Chad Wingard for Saturday night's Showdown. Defender Tom Clurey also comes into the team to replace Aidyn Johnson (groin). Dom Barry, Jasper Pittard and Karl Amon, who was the victim of the tackle that resulted in West Coast superstar Nic Naitanui being hit with a one-game suspension, have all been dropped. The Crows, meanwhile, have been boosted by the return of captain Taylor Walker who missed last week's 55-point thumping of Carlton with 'hamstring awareness', but star midfielder Rory Sloane will be out of action for at least the next fortnight after reinjuring his troublesome right foot at training. An innocuous incident at the club's main session saw Sloane suffer a Lisfranc ligament strain, which the club said in a statement is 'slightly different' to his original injury. The Adelaide vice-captain underwent scans on Thursday and consulted a surgeon, with the decision made for Sloane to rest. The 28-year-old hasn't kicked a football in anger since the round four loss to Collingwood. "At this stage, Rory will miss the next two games before we reassess his situation," said Crows head of football Brett Burton. "Surgery is not required, but our medical advice suggests the best course of action is to rest and recover." "Rory is one of the most professional and diligent players at the club and will do all he can to return as quickly as possible." Youngster Myles Poholke is back for Adelaide who have lost rebounding defender Wayne Milera to a hamstring injury and cut first-round draft selection Darcy Fogarty. Sydney will be without superstar forward Lance Franklin for Friday night's blockbuster against Hawthorn at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Franklin has missed the past two weeks with a bruised heel sustained in the round one victory over West Coast. "While we did a little bit of training (on Wednesday), he was still a little bit tender," said Swans coach John Longmire on Thursday afternoon after Sydney had touched down in Melbourne. "He's pretty hard, he can play with injuries, but we didn't want to push it too much and put him at risk, so we decided to can this week." Longmire said the wet conditions forecast for Friday night's match didn't factor in the decision to leave out the four-time Coleman medallist. "If he was fine last night and pulled up well today, he was always going to play regardless of the conditions," said Longmire. "Unfortunately, he just couldn't get through what was required." In Franklin's absence, Sydney have turned to debutant Tom McCartin. McCartin, who was drafted with pick 33 last year, is one of two inclusions for the Swans. The younger brother of St Kilda's Paddy, McCartin is a strong marking forward with impressive athletic traits, having recorded an 88cm vertical jump and finished highly in the Yo-Yo Test as well (level 21.5). Fellow forward Dan Robinson also comes into the team, with Robbie Fox and Harry the omissions. Hawks James Cousins can consider himself unlucky to be dropped for the clash against the Swans after restricting Essendon young gun Zach Merrett to just 17 possessions in last week's 33-point win, while James Worpel has also been cut, Will Langford and Ricky Henderson their replacements. Greater Western Sydney has lost patience with Jonathon Patton, dropping the key tall after his lacklustre effort in last week's 61-point loss to Geelong.
Tumblr media
GREATER Western Sydney has dropped key tall Jonathon Patton. The former number one draft pick joins Dylan Buckley and Nick Shipley as the outs for Saturday's important encounter against West Coast at Spotless Stadium. The Giants will unveil their fifth debutant of the season, with Isaac Cumming to play against the Eagles after collecting 33 disposals and nine marks in the NEAFL last week. Key pair Rory Lobb and Jeremy Cameron return to the fold, with Lobb making his first appearance since suffering a knee injury against the Swans in round three, while Cameron slots back in at full forward after missing last week with a foot injury. West Coast will roll out two debutants in former Port Adelaide midfielder Brendon Ah Chee and draftee Brayden Ainsworth. Fraser McInnes is the other inclusion for the Eagles, the utility coming into the team to help cover the loss of superstar Nic Naitanui (suspension), while midfield ace Luke Shuey (hamstring) and youngster Jack Petruccelle (ankle) will also miss. Gold Coast co-captain Steven May returns from an infected finger for Saturday afternoon's meeting with Melbourne at the Gabba. May is joined in the team by fellow key defender Jack Leslie, while dynamic midfielder Aaron Hall returns for his first game since round four. Experienced campaigner Matt Rosa (shoulder) is among three changes, alongside defenders Jesse Joyce (quad) and Max Spencer (omitted). For the second time in 2018, Melbourne have dropped speedster Jayden Hunt, with midfielder Christian Salem returning from a broken thumb. Essendon will have to get the job done against traditional rival Carlton at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday without key forward Joe Daniher who will be sidelined for at least a month with osteitis pubis, while young gun Andrew McGrath will be out of action for up to two weeks with a calf injury. In some good news for the 2-5 Bombers, livewire Orazio Fantasia returns from a groin injury and Shaun McKernan has been given his first game of the season in Daniher's absence. The Blues, meanwhile, have regained emerging star Charlie Curnow from a minor ankle injury, while former Cat Darcy Lang will make his club debut. Carlton have also recalled Jed Lamb but lose Levi Casboult (ribs), while former Greater Western Sydney pair Andrew Phillips and Matt Kennedy have been given the chop. St Kilda will blood midfielder Ed Phillips for his debut after consecutive 30-plus possession games in the VFL, while Blake Acres returns for Saturday night's meeting against Fremantle at Optus Stadium. They replace injured pair Ben Long (foot) and Paddy McCartin (whiplash) after last week's 39-point loss to Melbourne. Desperate to bounce back after a 77-point hammering at the hands of reigning premier Richmond last-start, Fremantle has turned to experienced campaigners in Michael Johnson and Danyle Pearce to replace creative defender Nathan Wilson (back soreness) and Ethan Hughes (omitted). The Western Bulldogs have been bolstered by the return of star midfielder Marcus Bontempelli who was a late withdrawal from the team that accounted for Gold Coast in Ballarat last week with hip soreness for Saturday night's date with Brisbane at Etihad Stadium, with Lukas Webb also recalled. Tim English has been dropped, leaving Tom Boyd to handle the ruck duties against in-form Lion Stefan Martin. Lin Jong has also been cut by the men in red, white and blue who will be looking to make it three wins in succession. Brisbane, meanwhile, have replaced Jacob Allison with Nick Robertson who missed last week' seven-point loss to Collingwood because of suspension. Richmond faces North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium on Sunday and looks set to be strengthened by the return of captain Trent Cotchin who was a late withdrawal from last week's triumph over the Dockers because of a knee injury, with fellow premiership player Brandon Ellis also featuring on the extended bench. Dion Prestia (calf) is the only out for the men in yellow and black at this stage. For the Kangaroos, in-form veteran Jarrad Waite has been selected alongside utility Majak Daw, while top 10 draft selection and former Giant Paul Ahern is in the frame to make his debut. Collingwood have named Scott Pendlebury in their side to square off against Geelong at the MCG on Sunday, despite the captain suffering an ankle injury against the Lions.
Tumblr media
CHAMPION Geelong midfielder Gary Ablett will make his return from a hamstring against Collingwood.   The Magpies have added classy veteran Daniel Wells and small forward Alex Fasolo in what would be their first games of 2018, while promising youngsters Callum Brown and Josh Daicos have also been named on the extended bench. Geelong has brought back a wealth of experience, with key defender Harry Taylor to run out in the navy blue and white hoops for the first time since suffering a foot injury in the round one victory over Melbourne, while champion midfielder Gary Ablett returns from a hamstring injury sustained in the round three loss to West Coast. Ruckman Zac Smith has also been named after missing the game against Greater Western Sydney because of a back complaint. Lachie Fogarty (managed) has joined the suspended Tom Hawkins as the confirmed out for the Cats. But they will be without Mitch Brown for a little longer as he deals with an ankle problem from that Melbourne game. They should have Jobe Watson, Andy McGrath and Ben McNeice available after being rested last week, but Jayden Laverde’s battle to play this season looks likely to continue. The Bombers have pushed back a return date from a pre-season ankle injury to about round 15, but it was a serious and rare injury that they’ll be conservative with. – Callum Twomey

AFL Fantasy review
Nat Fyfe is back in town and fans (and Fantasy coaches) are thrilled
WITH 38 disposals and the highest score for the final round of the JLT Community Series, Nat Fyfe (MID, $595,000) certainly didn’t disappoint. He pleased his Fantasy coaches with a huge 147 and looks set for another big year.
Patrick Dangerfield (MID, $712,000) also racked up 38 touches for his 135 and even though his popularity has dropped off slightly in 2017, Heath Shaw (DEF, $614,000) dominated on his way to 146. Shaw enjoyed the freedom that pre-season allows in the defensive half for the Giants and cashed in with 16 marks.
Dayne Beams (MID, $519,000) proved he is back to his very best with 127 and the under-priced Andrew Gaff (MID, $564,000) was on fire against Melbourne with 145.
Are we concerned?
It has been one of the biggest talking points of the pre-season and now is the time for us to be concerned about Max Gawn (RUC, $642,000) sharing his rucking duties with Jake Spencer (RUC, $281,000). Gawn scored just 54 and with Spencer kicking three goals while resting forward, you’d think he has secured a spot in their best 22 for round one.
Tom Rockliff (MID, $704,000) only racked up 20 touches for his 76 and this has many Fantasy coaches jumping off the third most expensive player in the game. Personally, I’ll be holding strong and backing in the Fantasy pig who scored over 170 three times last year.
Rookie watch (under $250k)
Andy Otten (DEF, $150,000) continued his career comeback with another solid performance. He scored 73 and, believe it or not, is still not a lock for the Crows for the opening round. Curtly Hampton (DEF, $204,000) is though and accumulated 26 touches for his 80. At his price and ability, he should be sitting comfortably on your ground.
At a similar price, Caleb Marchbank (DEF, $205,000) also cemented himself a round one berth with his 88, thanks to seven marks.
Tim Taranto (FWD/MID, $248,000) scored 66 and looks set for a round one debut but for nearly $100k less, Jarrod Pickett (FWD/MID, $150,000) was equally impressive for Carlton with 73.
As far as rookies go, Brett Eddy (FWD, $150,000) stole the show kicking five goals and 94 points, and although his teammate Sam Powell-Pepper (MID, $216,000) only scored 48, he did so with eight free kicks against his name. In Fantasy that equates to -24.
On the flipside, some rookies failed to impress. Dan Butler (FWD, $150,000) had just 33 from 80 per cent game time and the Kangaroo’s pair Ed Vickers-Wills (DEF, $150,000) and Mitchell Hibberd (DEF, $150,000) only scored 38 and 48 respectively. Hibberd played less than half a game, and although he scored well in that time, the fact that he didn’t play much is a concern for coaches who currently have him on their field.
#StayStrongJLT
Cam McCarthy (FWD, $211,000) appears to have finally found his feet at Fremantle, kicking an impressive six goals for his 93, and Kayne Turner (FWD, $216,000) produced his best game to date with 88. Stay strong coaches and dont pick these guys up off the back of just one game.
Heeney replacements
Isaac Heeney was one of the top five most popular Fantasy players before he was struck down with an illness. This sent coaches into chaos as they hunted down a replacement for the young star.
Gold Coast’s Touk Miller (FWD/MID, $493,000) would be at the top of the list and his score of 81 certainly proved why he is a worthy replacement. With nine per cent ownership Miller look set to break out this year after finishing his 2016 season averaging 104 in his last eight games.
Jack Steele (FWD/MID, $432,000) was impressive again with 12 tackles and 120, along with his team mate Jack Billings (FWD/MID, $479,000) who found the ball 25 times for his 81.

TEAMS: Gaz, Bont, Jack back for week four
MIDFIELD stars Gary Ablett and Marcus Bontempelli will be unleashed for the first time this year in Thursday night’s Gold Coast-Western Bulldogs clash at Metricon Stadium.
The talented duo will use the final week of the JLT Community Series to get match practice ahead of the opening home-and-away round later this month.
In other selection news, Melbourne has finally picked Jack Watts after leaving him out of the side for the first two JLT matches.
Watts has been named for the Demons’ clash with West Coast, also on Thursday night, at Domain Stadium.
Ablett, 32, last played in round 16 last year before season-ending surgery to repair his dislocated left shoulder.
He has been named alongside former Adelaide midfielder Jarryd Lyons, who is in line for his Suns’ debut, Matt Rosa, Jarrod Witts, Jack Bowes and Aaron Hall, who return after missing the second pre-season game.
Newly appointed co-captain Tom Lynch will also come in for his second hit-out, with Brandon Matera, Matt Shaw, Jesse Lonergan and Sean Lemmens among the omissions.
Meanwhile, Bontempelli has been named again after being a late scratching from last week’s line up.
The 21-year-old has been battling an ankle issue across the pre-season, but is slated for his first run on Thursday along with veteran Matthew Boyd.
Captain Robert Murphy, Luke Dahlhaus, Lachie Hunter, Zaine Cordy, Travis Cloke, Fletcher Roberts, Tom Liberatore, Caleb Daniel and Jason Johannisen have been named for their second hit-outs after missing the second round.
Veteran defender Dale Morris will miss after his first game last week, with Declan Hamilton, Mitch Honeychurch, Lukas Webb, and draftees Patrick Lipinski and Lewis Young also left out.
Luckless rookie Roarke Smith is sidelined after suffering his second major knee injury in 18 months last Thursday against the Brisbane Lions.
The Demons will use their final official hit-out to give Watts, Jack Trengove, Dom Tyson and Colin Garland their first runs for 2017.
They’ve left injured former Bomber Michael Hibberd out of their line up, along with Jay Kennedy-Harris, Aaron Vandenberg, draftee Dion Johnstone and rookie Joel Smith.
The Eagles have named ruckman Jonathan Giles for his first run, and recalled Will Schofield and Tom Cole from week one with Sam Butler out.
