It really feels like Hua Cheng’s character was design to showcase just how ineffective and dare I even say useless heavenly officials truly are.
First, you have reports of a ghostly groom who’s really just Pei Ming’s bitter ex kidnapping brides and murdering god knows how many people over the past 100+ years. Yet heaven does pretty much nothing, and dumps the responsibility on a twice demoted scrap god. It takes Hua Cheng showing up, guiding Bride! Xie Lian to the ghost’s domain and destroying the barrier that kept away outsiders for the issue to even get resolved.
When Xie Lian needed to find information about Banyue pass and asked around heaven, they declined to enlighten him on anything. Meanwhile Hua Cheng (while in his San Lang disguise) tells him every detail, helps him on his journey, finds him the antidote for the scorpion snake bite, protects him while trapped in the Sinner’s pit and helps him with exposing Pei Jr. as the culprit.
Oh and then there’s the boy with the multi-faced disease that he asked Ling-Wen to look for several days ago, that took Hua Cheng all of two minutes to track down. Like come on!!!
Then there’s the whole Fang Xin Guoshi/Golden Feast Massacre incident Xie Lian was accused of. That took Hua Cheng only a few hours to uncover the truth and prove Xie Lian’s innocent. A matter that would have taken heaven who knows how long to settle.
Heaven is so bad at their job, Hua Cheng made a jab at them for how they would be dragging their feet when it came to dealing with Qi Rong’s underlings. Then proceeded to highlight that fact by literally making it rain with the blood of said underlings that he’d just slaughtered in that very instant.

tgcf au where xie lian buys the 9/11 warrior cat adopt not knowign that it's based on 9/11 and that the artist (blank_wolfxXiang he's known for his edgy hyperealistic guro wolf emo art ) is a huge POS so he gets cancelled and kicked out of all his RP groups (secretly cancellation was orchestrated by one of bwx's alt accounts, junwoof) but hua cheng, xie lian's singular DeviantArt subscriber and patreon member (before it got mass reported by bwx), comes to his defense because xie lian saved him when he got bullied on amino for having a half demon half fallen angel red black wolf oc with red and black eyes and heterophobia

people on twitter are discoursing about whether xie lian’s chastity-based cultivation is a form of abuse (?????) which is so backward to me like huh???? yes jun wu’s thing about xie lian being a virgin is fucking creepy and weird and part of his overall obsession and desire to control him. but did they just completely miss the part where xie lian chose this method of cultivation bc the abstinence wasn’t an issue for him? he got hit by sex pollen and never once thought of sex? he didn’t even cultivate for 700 years and just never had sex because he never wanted to and as soon as he found a guy he wanted to fuck he just went for it? literally didn’t even pause to consider the cultivation thing at any point. if this were any other character it might have been used against him but the whole point is xie lian once again perfectly dodging jun wu’s manipulation attacks by just being a weird little guy with autism

Xie Lian : I’ve done a lot of dumb stuff.
Feng Xin, Mu Qing, Shi QingXuan and literally the whole heavenly realm: I witnessed the dumb stuff.
Jun Wu : I recorded the dumb stuff.
Hua Cheng: I joined you in the dumb stuff.
Mei NianQing : I TRIED TO STOP YOU FROM DOING THE DUMB STUFF!

xie lian took 2 days to heal after his stab wound on beizi hill
he tooks several months to recover after the temple scene with white no-face
he took a year+ to heal after being trampled in banyue
the quick pace of healing after the temple scene makes me headcanon that he didn't give himself enough time to do it properly, meaning he was in a lot of physical as well as mental pain during the no-face arc.

Xie Lian doesn’t fucking change in his beliefs or morality from beginning to end of the entire book. He almost loses himself in book 4 but is brought back from the brink by Wuming (Hua Cheng), prompting him to vow to never lose himself again. All of the suffering he experienced after his first ascension? A direct result of his unchanging beliefs, as stated directly by Guoshi:
“He had always been setting riddles for you to test you,” Head Priest said, “The Human Face Disease of Xian Le was the first question. Based on his answer, as long as you chose to unleash the Human Face Disease against Yong An back then, then you would’ve passed. Not only would he not have banished you, he would even help you cover up, and truly turn you into his trusted heir, taking one step to reach the top of the heavens while taking two steps against it. But you’ve answered wrong.”
“The period when you were banished, he should’ve set another riddle for you, but you still didn’t give him a satisfactory answer, so the moment you ascended, you were immediately beaten back down.”
...
“The second time you were banished and drifted in the mortal realm, he had countless opportunities to slowly ‘educate’ you, slowly wait until you’ve changed your mind.” Head Priest said, “Based on my observation, he was already calmed down at first, but this calm was disrupted recently.”
“The reason being your third ascension.”
“If you were a puddle of rotten mud, then whatever. But you, even after you’ve become like that, completely ignoring everything he’s planned for you, you actually were still able to ascend for the third time, and still the same as before, completely unchanged... I don’t know what he thought when he saw you, but I felt he would definitely set out more riddles to test you.”
—Chapt. 220: Heaven Official's Blessing The White Emperor Sets Life and Death Riddles in Secret, fan translation
Guoshi also had this to say about why Jun Wu made the type of choices he did in setting up these “riddles”:
... “Besides, as long as you start doubting yourself, doubting your true heart, your actions and objectives, then it’d be easy for him to lead you in the direction he wanted.”
“If you thought: ‘I am the Crown Prince of Wu Yong’, the possibility of you repeating his fate would be greater. He was leading you proactively, hoping to make you walk the same paths he did, so it wasn’t that your paths were somehow destined to be similar.”
“He couldn’t tolerate how similar you both were, but walked different paths.”
Xie Lian and the Crowned Prince of Wu Yong lived similar lives and had similar aspirations, but the moment the Crown Prince of Wu Yong faced an insurmountable problem that brought his entire kingdom to ruin, seemingly by his own hand, he could not handle it. He did not want to acknowledge the failure as a failure of self but as a forgone conclusion of human nature, that others would rather do immoral things to save their own lives or reputations or status and, therefore, nothing good can or should be done to help anyone else, especially not at the risk of any of those three things. Xie Lian, however, comes and proves him wrong by choosing to sacrifice himself over and over again for the benefit of others, even as they turned on him. White No-Face even tries to twist Xie Lian’s nature against him by sacrificing him against his will when he set Xie Lian up in that cave with the human face disease. But the moment Xie Lian is given a choice again, that is still the choice he makes, himself.
Jun Wu cannot stand that someone who has faced the same adversity as him would still hold tight to his morals, because Jun Wu ultimately hates that he could not hold to his own morals under the same pressures. This is why he manipulates every facet of Xie Lian’s post-first ascension life to play into this ultimate tragedy, to force Xie Lian into making the same decision that he feels like he was forced to make however many years prior. But what Jun Wu failed to realize but Xie Lian did is that even if every action is not met with resounding success, that does not mean that the action in and of itself was worthless or a waste of time. A failure to achieve one’s goals does not have to be a personal failure or a failure of the ones you tried to help; sometimes shit just happens! There is still good in doing good even without acknowledgement. Even being beaten at Jun Wu’s hands, Xie Lian continues to refuse Jun Wu’s path:
[Jun Wu] laughed maniacally then dragged Xie Lian and slammed him towards the rocks, smashing as he yelled, “WILL YOU CHANGE? WILL YOU CHANGE? WILL YOU CHANGE??”
It was as if Xie Lian had gone mad too, and he gripped Jun Wu’s arms roaring, “I WON’T! I WON’T! I WON’T CHANGE!!!”
Even though the smashing was making him see stars, incomparably painful, but he held this breath in stubbornly, refusing to give the desired answer at all, and cried as he roared, “I JUST WON’T CHANGE! EVEN IF IT’S PAINFUL I WON’T CHANGE, EVEN IF I DIE I WON’T CHANGE, I WILL NEVER CHANGE!!!”
—Chapt. 239: Heaven Official's Blessing Crack the White Armour; Fantastic Magic Shattering the Cursed Shackles
Xie Lian believes that his every kind act, regardless of the outcome, was still worth it, and that is the difference that drove the two men’s wildly different life paths.

i have finally finished tgcf and can give better opinion of some of my favorite characters.
xie lian- my baby! i love him. he must be protected at all costs. but also…. he kinda hot when he goes all martial god…. that’s all i’m saying. also, i love that even though he’s unlucky, he’s highly perceptive of things and people around him. he notices things. i want to give squishmallows.
hua cheng- plz let me tell him that he’s worthy. plz let me tell him he matters. my god, this man needs more softness in his life. so much suffering. give him squishmallows too! he would appreciate soft stuff too!
feng xin- a likable, dependable labrador. he is simply a good man and a good body guard. he follows his orders to a t and tries to do things the right way.
mu qing- just a bitch. an understandable bitch, but like… a bitch. i think he is a complex character and i loved when he was talking to xie lian abs being vulnerable he was able to admit his feelings were complex and messy. i couldn’t be in the same room as him. but i get it.
shi qingxuan- oh, my absolute favorite gender-fluid icon. thank you! they are such a true friend to xie lian and over all give me comfortable and safe vibes. they would listen to you vent, and they would judge you but they wouldn’t hold it against you.
pei ming- i think general fuckboi is an outstanding character. i think he would absolutely ignore me. i love that even though he’s a whore, he’s up front about it. the slutification of pei mingvis the only thing i’m here for right now. he definitely needs more respect women juice, but he has solid potential.
lang qianqiu- he gives me pretty boy vibes. idk what it is, but he gives me “better than thou” for most of the story. he does redeem himself once he has had his revenge, so like, i get it.
quan yizhen- he is a great dane. giant, floppy, goofy. could break through the wall like the koolaid man. he reminds me of a colt. like a young horse. horse people will get that one.
jun wu- mommy milkers and morality don’t go hand in hand unfortunately. so the biggest tits award also goes to the biggest fuck ass award. cuz holy trauma llama…
i’m sure i’ll have more thoughts but these are just the ones off the top of my head. bed time ramblings if you will.

Okay but post canon (au?) Where Ling wen became emperor for many many reasons but also what's someone going to do banish her? Heaven literally collapsed the last time she was away for 3 days. These sexist fucks can't do shit with out her. Everyone goes crying to xie lian to fix it but xie lian who still personally has the brocade immortal and is on his honeymoon does not actually have a problem with this and is feeling petty enough at the interruptions that he just goes well that's none of my business I don't actually have a problem with Ling wen being in charge she's doing all the work anyway.
They do have a much more private meeting when xie lian very politely threatens her going if you do crimes I will kill you :). Ling wen doesn't care she wants shared custody rights of the brocade immortal.

The Silt Verses AU where Jun Wu is an old, old, old god -- a god who's worshippers once counted in the millions until industrialization and modernization came and chased away old war gods, old gods of blood and thunder, old gods who watched your borders and slayed your enemies and turned your best soldiers into Saints. Pale things with twice-too-many faces that laugh and cry and it all sounds like screaming once you get close enough don't get close enough they burn they burn they'll burn you they'll burn everyone they'll burn your enemies to ash they'll burn your fields into ash they'll burn your kingdom into ash and isn't that what you wanted?
Didn't you pray for fire? Didn't you strike the match? Who are you, believer, to feel betrayed? Who are you to call this unfair? Don't you want this? Don't you still want this?
War is more... sterile, now, than it used to be. Militaries have new war gods. Smaller, softer, more civilized war gods. Gods the forget to be afraid of. That's why there are so many wars now, you know. Because the war gods are small and soft and civilized, and their worshippers chain them to their tanks and their aircraft carriers, and they forget that brutality is brutality. Do you think you're the first to believe your war was righteous?
Jun Wu is small and weak and starving, now, but he isn't dead. Not quite yet. His believers have spent so long working in the shadows, carefully preparing for his return. It's almost time. He shall come. He shall remind the world what war looks like.
Xie Lian, too, is small and weak and starving now. He has only one believer left. One follower who crawled out of the ruins of Xianle with his faith in his god clutched to his chest. They have no hope of defeating a god like Jun Wu.
But, oh, they have to try.

Look, I'm rereading tgcf, so be aware that this post contains spoilers.

So this is the moment jun wu decided to turn xie lian's life into a living hell. Like bitch WHY WERE YOU SO PRESSED ABOUT A SIMPLE PHRASE??? Is it because your body is in paradise, but your heart will always be in the abyss?
Tumblr media
Also I really love 17yo xie lian ajsbsks he's so impulsive, so righteous, so sarcastic. The ministers be like "dianxia apologize for saving the child" and xie lian, examining his nails being the sheltered and spoiled prince he is "nah don't wanna 💅"
Tumblr media
But seriously tho he was right not to apologize for saving hong er. Yes, he's my baby who did nothing wrong and he's always right even if he's wrong.
