I love how wtnv just indoctrinates its viewers. We are new to this world, but Cecil soothes us with his voice. We know, just from episode one, that the sun set 10 minutes too late. We know that there should be massive earthquakes happening, but no one is feeling a thing. There are so many things happening in the first episode - it’s impossible to just notice a few. By having everything be strange and abnormal, wtnv makes us an outsider in this world, with Cecil as our only guide.

It’s through this strange introduction that we find ourselves trusting our narator. He has no reason to lie, this is just the radio. These are how things have always been. This is normal.

And we believe it.

We can ignore the fact that Night Vale is the weird place. We can ignore that, as far a we know, the rest of the world is like ours. We can ignore it because we trust Cecil. He is being honest, so when he says this is normal, we believe him, and we forget what we know.

Wtnv is amazing because it knows just how to get us to listen to everything that is happening. It makes it so easy to just listen and believe. And later on, it makes it easy to despise those who would take our normal ways from us.
