Day of mourning: Canadian ceremony to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II

As the Commonwealth grieves the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Canada is marking her state funeral with a national day of mourning and commemorations in the capital.

A holiday for some, the sombre day will be marked in various ways across the country. In Ottawa, following the morning's events in London, there will be a memorial parade at 12:10 p.m. ET and a service at a historically significant cathedral at 1 p.m. ET. CTV News will have live coverage all afternoon.

The memorial parade will begin at the Cartier Square Drill Hall, a military training facility next to Ottawa City Hall along the Rideau Canal. The parade will travel past the National Aboriginal Veterans Monument and the National War Memorial on Elgin Street, before turning onto Wellington Street heading towards the Christ Church Cathedral.

Canadian Heritage says the parade will include two RCMP Musical Ride detachments, as well as a 100-person military service guard of honour comprised of navy, army, air force and special forces members.

A member of the National Sentry Program will carry Her Majesty's personal Canadian flag, and military band members will also take part, as will representatives from each of the 16 military regiments of Her Majesty.

A 96-gun salute—one round for every year of Queen Elizabeth II's life—will be conducted during the parade from a location west of the downtown core.

The service at the Christ Church Cathedral is invitation-only, and is expected to include some 600 guests, from members of Parliament, dignitaries, and members of the diplomatic corps, to representatives of various faith communities, and charities with whom Queen Elizabeth II had a close connection.

Among the confirmed guests in the nation's capital are former prime ministers Brian Mulroney and Joe Clark. Mulroney and former governor general Adrienne Clarkson will be delivering addresses during the ceremony.

Over the weekend Canadian Heritage confirmed some additional attendees, including: Chief Justice Richard Wagner, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, Canadian Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson, RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki, Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Wayne Eyre, former astronaut Roberta Bondar, and former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Gov. Gen. Mary Simon will not be present, as they are representing Canada in London, alongside more than a dozen prominent Canadians, at the state funeral.

The cathedral is where numerous state funeral services have been held, and is where a commemorative ceremony was held for Prince Philip in 2021.

Officials said that the ceremony will involve both religious and non-religious elements, reflective of the diversity of religions observed in Canada. Algonquin spiritual adviser and English Poet Laureate of Ottawa Albert Dumont will also give a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II.

The ceremony will include hymns and songs, a tribute video montage featuring an original piece composed by the Canadian Armed Forces for the occasion, and musical interludes by Canadian artists.

Canadian talents Ginette Reno and Rufus Wainwright will each perform a song, and the national anthem will be interpreted by singer and actor Kim Richardson. There will also be a moment of silence in remembrance of Queen Elizabeth II.

People are invited to gather along the parade route to watch, and screens have been installed at the Garden of the Provinces and Territories on Wellington Street for spectators to take in the historic occasion.

When the ceremony concludes, church bells will toll, and there will be a Royal Canadian Air Force CF-18 flypast in the "missing person formation" moving over Parliament Hill, towards the cathedral.

Canadian flags that have been flying at half-mast on all federal buildings and establishments in Canada and abroad, including the Peace Tower, are expected to be raised at sunset on Monday, marking the end of Canada's official period of mourning.

Soooo we’re learning about the British presence in India and I am very bored, so I was wondering if you could tell me about the British Generals in India in the 1750s-70s, specifically any ones involved in amrev? if not, that’s fine tho lmao I’m just looking for a way to not fall asleep in class

LMAO you’re probably wayy out of class by now, Here’s what I’ve got:

In terms of that date range, it seems none of the generals that served in the Amrev were in India before that. Now, after the Amrev, Lord Cornwallis was sent to India as Governor General and revived his reputation there. The British were mostly pleased with his success in fighting another war there and ultimately giving more authority to the British presence. He even introduced a “code” which is named after him. Cornwallis’ reforms played a large part in cementing British rule over India. Of course, this slowly waned Indian power there, Cornwallis even passing legislation that barred Indians from the uppermost ranks of the administration. He actually died in India and is buried there.

In terms of other generals, the Seven Years War in India is definitely a place to look, coming up with the likes of Robert Clive and Eyre Coote. (Clive having a particularly interesting story) This is smack in the date range you mentioned, also Warren Hastings was pretty significant too (1773)

I have started watching My Roommate is a Gumiho and @gizkasparadise wanted reaction posts, so you’re all getting reaction posts whether you want them or not.

If you want the run-down on the show, I recommend you read gizka’s shitty powerpoint, but the TL;DR is that history major Lee Dam accidentally swallows gumiho Shin Woo Yeo’s fox bead, now they’re roommates.

This is the first “on-air” drama I have watched on Viki. It looks like there are currently 3 free episodes. I am assuming that more will get unlocked over time (maybe 1/week? here’s hoping)

Shin Woo Yeo is so tired and I am here for it. He can’t even be assed to keep up with own cover story. He’s at work and he’s like “yeah, back in the Joseon dynasty, when I was the governor of such and such” and he doesn’t even backtrack, his co-workers are like “Writer Shin, you’re such a card! Can I have a ride in your Porsche?” and he’s like “No.”

The Swallowing the Fox Bead sequence is so long and so extra and they are going to replay it three times every episode, aren’t they?

I love reincarnation plots, like, an ungodly amount, but I am so refreshed that Shin Woo Yeo is not pining for some human that died tragically 700 years ago, and I am ready to see him fall in love right here in real time. I just finished Hotel Del Luna, which was great, but 70% of it was characters gazing longingly off into the middle distance while a sad song played and I’m have had Enough.

YANG HYE SUN I love you, your boots are amazing, please drag this man’s ass to hell every episode for not being slutty enough, please and thank you.

Kdramas love to be giving teleportation powers to characters that absolutely should not have teleportation powers

When I started watching kdramas, I would not have expected there to be so much house porn, but!!! Shin Woo Yeo’s house!!! 💯💯💯

Shin Woo Yeo has the energy of both Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice (in the sense that he’s a social disaster but an actual Good Dude) and Mr. Rochester from Jane Eyre (in the sense that he gardens at night with a sickle and chuckles over the bags of coagulated blood he keeps in his fridge). I am actually really, really charmed by how thoughtful and considerate he is to Lee Dam (he bought her all that ice cream??), which is sort of a departure from most kdrama immortals who are kinda assholes until they fall in love with someone (except for Kim Shin from Goblin who remained an asshole even after he fell in love).

That scene where Shin Woo Yeo shapeshifts into an old dude and is like “are you impressed by my shapeshifting skills?” and Lee Dam is like “... please go back to being hot”

Grim reaper watch: So far, no grim reapers

Overall, the first episode was not super-strong, but it was enjoyable enough. There was a lot of set-up and a lot of Lee Dam shrieking. It has good potential, though. I like a lot of the characters and I’m looking forward to watching more!

Hello everyone! The month of love is finally over, but before that, inspired by the “What your Favorite Hetalia ship says about you” and related; and since Mexico is one of the most shipped countries (at least by the Hetalia and Countryhumans latin fandom), I decided to make this in collaboration with my cousin. If you are not familiar with this, basically it is a recopilation of facts some people share when they ship Mexico with another country.

WARNINGS AND NOTES BEFORE WE START:

- This post is for both, Hetalia and Countryhumans fans. I clarify that in this blog we don´t discuss which one is better than the other, we enjoy the healthy part and avoid the toxic part.

- This is just for fun, and IT SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY. Think of it as a horoscope, you can share some of the facts, maybe not. The main purpose is to have some fun.

- We are aware that not all the ships will be here, or that not all of them will have the same extension. We tried to gather all we could.

- This is an extra warning for the English translation: This post may contain a lot of mexican and latin american modern references. Also, the best known historical periods are going to be mentioned, so if you are not familiar with the history of Mexico, we invite you to watch this video, and to consult other articles and media.

Without further due, let´s begin:

FIRST OF ALL, THIS IS ONE OF THE POSSIBLE REASONS YOU SHIP MEXICO WITH ONE, IF NOT, MORE COUNTRIES:

- You are mexican, I don´t have a doubt. You have a Mexico OC and you make fanarts and write fanfics about him/her with your favorite character.

- You are latino, and you came from the Latin Hetalia fandom, or you are from the latin fandom of Countryhumans (obviously, Miss Sherlock Holmes).

- You are neither mexican or latino, but still you like Mexico.

- If you are from Hetalia, you are still waiting the day Himaruya publish the official design of Mexico, so he/she can interact with your favorite character.

- Your guilty pleasure are stories about possesive couples and couples with secret lovers. (Okay, that´s not healthy...)

- If you´re from the Hetalia fandom, you do not like SpaMano (Spain x Romano), and if you are mexican, you will never accept (or you ignored) that canonically, Romano received better treatment than the rest of Spain colonies.

- If you are mexican, you like when Mexico (or New Spain) is represented as the spoiled kid, as daddy´s little princess, and as the best colony of Spain. (Sorry, the other Spain former colonies.)

- Your favorite Mexico periods are the Conquest, the New Spain colonial era and the Independence.

- Probably you not only ship Mexico with Spain. Actually for some reason you like Mexico cheating Spain with another country, either England, France, a latin country and, why not? with the United States.

IF YOU LIKE 🇫🇷 FRAMEX (France x Mexico) 🇲🇽

- You like to live the expensive life: Eating in gourmet restaurants, buying brand clothes, expensive trips with a five-star hotel stay. Or if you had money, you would love to live the expensive life.

- Favorite Mexico period: The Porfiriato. If you´re mexican, you think that outside of the bad things, Porfirio Díaz made great contributions to the country, and his remains should return to Mexico.

- If you are from Hetalia, obviously you like tsundere characters.

- You are fan of Harry Styles, Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, Queen, the Beatles, David Bowie, Alan Rickman, or any other english celebrity.

Henry Trotter,Actg.Resident Councillor of Penang from(24 Oct.1891-31 Oct.1892/16 Sept.1894-7 Dec.1895).Born in 1837.Son of Alexander Trotter of Tydenham,Gloucestershire.He became an private secretary to the Governor of Dominica in 1852.In 1859,he received a clerkship in the office of Commander-in-chief(Duke of Cambridge) at the House Guards.Later he appointed as Deputy Comptroller of the Convict Establishment in Bermuda.Next he was transfered to Ceylon as Inspector of Post Offices and later became Postmaster General.In 1871,he was appointed as Postmaster General of Straits Settlements.He became Auditor-General Of Straits Settlements in 1882.He married 1stly to Almeria Symonds Bridgwater,2ndly to Emma May Lewis Gordon and 3rdly to Helena Conduit Vale.He died in 1911,Alphington Court,Jersey Island.His issue:-

My mind won’t shut up about a MDZS Jane Eyre AU so here it is.

-Takes place in 1850s-ish in England. The Lans (and most of the clans) come from a line of rich Chinese pioneer ancestors that profited from the East India Trading Company and set up homes in England for business, hence they all have multi-generational money.

-Jiang Fengmian, owner of many smaller shops across England, travels to China after hearing about the death of his friends. He finds Wei Ying, who is being housed by someone who trains bait dogs for sport. Jiang Fengmian takes Wei Ying back to England because he can’t just leave him there and he figures he can watch over him better anyway.

-Wei Ying catches onto English quickly, though he has a slight accent when he isn’t careful. Jiang Fengmian teaches him about “the Other” and how people will perceive him differently on account of his looks. He also can’t speak the mother tongue if he doesn’t want to be treated poorly. Wei Ying is told to choose a western name to help people understand him better. He finds a book by Oscar Wilde and settles that his English name will be Wilde.

-Madame Yu hates him so she pushes her husband to send him to boarding school with Jiang Cheng. He keeps getting into trouble with the headmaster so Madame Yu sends him to governor school, which is even more strict and sets him up with the plan that he will become a governor for someone else’s estate, thereby keeping him away from the Jiangs forever.

-Wei Ying hates school but he gets amazing grades. Even though he graduates at the very top of his class, no teacher will write him a recommendation letter so that he can get a job. Wei Ying spends some blissful months with Jiang Cheng once they are school-free until Madame Yu gets a letter from the Lan family that they are looking for a governor who can speak the mother tongue.

-Thus Wei Ying becomes the governor for the Lan estate. He learns more about Chinese culture there and how they incorporate that into an English setting. The estate is lead by Lan Qiren whose wife had passed away before having children, so his nephews Lan Zhan and Lan Huan help keep it running as well. While Lan Zhan never married, he is taking care of an orphaned boy named Yuan. Wei Ying’s role as a governor is to take care of and teach Yuan everything he needs to know.

-Day 1 and Wei Ying is already bored. He loves Yuan to bits already but being a governor means more than just taking care of the kid. He’s always on his feet doing chores and getting bossed around by Old Man Qiren, so he decides to have fun by trying to get Lan Zhan drunk (it ends with Wei Ying drinking the entire bottle).

-Basically Lan Zhan is cold towards him from the very beginning but Wei Ying just wants him to open up (read: embarrass the hell out of his master). Wei Ying wants to cause mischief but needs to keep in mind who signs his checks. He’s here to make that cash money yo.

-Yeah I don’t have much planned out beyond Wei Ying and Lan Zhan slowly falling in love but having to keep it behind closed doors because being gay is technically illegal (tho Oscar Wilde was able to get away with it for a long time). They bond over Yuan being hella cute. Lan Zhan becomes Wei Ying’s sugar daddy. Lan Huan experiences everything from the sidelines and is very amused.

-Also for some reason I love the idea of Nie Huaisang being a professional cross dresser for this AU because I feel like he would. Like, he would dress up and accompany closeted gay men throughout the day. Wei Ying would recognize him while doing his chores and Nie Huaisang would be the one to tell him all about The Gay Underground and p much be a catalyst for Wei Ying to recognize his feelings.

-Also since there weren’t really any female doctors at this time, I imagine Wen Qing would be the family physician for the Lan family. She would have studied medicine in all-male classes and basically had to fight to become a doctor. The Wens disowned her as a threat to her financial stability since they didn’t want her to go to med school but she did it anyways without their help. No other family will hire her except for the Lans because she and Yuan come from the same family. The Lans want Yuan to be close to his relatives, so Wen Qing and Wen Ning visit sometimes.

-This could seriously be a novel-length fic but this is what I have now.

Edit: Oscar Wilde wasn’t famous until like the 1890s and Chinese people weren’t widely hired by the East India Trading Co. until 1880s so let’s say the Jiangs are rich early seafarers for EITC who invested their money wisely and they represent New Money while the Lans settled into England as Chinese conservationists for the Bodelian back in the 1700s and are Old Money. This story takes place 1890-1900s.
