Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media

Hanford Works on a hot and hazy summer day, Washington, 2014.
In memory of the victims at Nagasaki on 9 August 1945, killed by an atomic bomb dependent on the plutonium produced in the reactors at Hanford. The bomb on 6 August over Hiroshima used mainly uranium produced at Oak Ridge in TN.
Also in memory of the downwinders in eastern Washington and elsewhere who suffered disease, and in many of those cases cancers resulting in death, from radioactivity released at Hanford from the mid 1940s through the mid 1980s. Those victims include my best friend and several close relatives.
And finally in the hope that the worst-case scenario about the radioactive materials which a Chernobyl-like disaster at Hanford could unleash into the air and water will not occur. Some well-informed commentators have suggested that such a disaster, or one even worse, could, and indeed some of them say most likely will, occur given the huge quantity of highly radioactive and otherwise toxic materials stored in leaking underground tanks in the flats across the Columbia in the middle ground of this photo.

Been on a Kate Brown kick! Plutopia is a fascinating historical juxtapose of 2 plutonium plants, Hanford in eastern Washington state, and its Cold War sister site in Myak, in the Soviet Union. Think of these two sites as fenced off company towns that were always better funded than any other proximate regional workplace with better salaries and perks like subsidized homes. Brown said in an interview with Process: A Blog for American History, that these atomic cities bought, “compliant and silent workers, people who willingly traded in their political and biological rights for consumer rights and financial security.” It’s an interesting read. Really great audiobook.

Just started another book by her, Manual for Survival: A Chernobyl Guide to the Future. Through archival reconstruction, Brown posits that we still don’t understand the full health effects of Chernobyl. A hella compelling examination.

Hey Washington what happened at that Hanford site? I really would like to know
Oh! Uh.... Nuclear testing. Specifically for weapons.
Wasn't great and affected a lot of the environment surrounding the site.

Highly Radioactive Problem
A highly radioactive spill near the Columbia River in Hanford in eastern Washington is worse than was previously described. Hanford Site, or the Hanford Nuclear Reservation or Site W, is a nuclear production complex. It was part of the Manhattan Project, and produced the plutonium in more than 60,000 weapons in the U.S. nuclear arsenal, including Fat Man, the bomb dropped on Nagasaki in 1945.…

Hanford Nuclear Site is mega polluted with extremely radioactive nuclear waste, aka sludge, and is leaking sludge into the Columbia River right now, as of February 2023
Hanford Nuclear Site is so polluted that clean up efforts, which started in 1989 and were slated to last 30 years, are still being carried on in 2023
Hanford Nuclear site has a museum you can visit that includes info on Manhattan Project!
Hanford Nuclear site has a nuclear reactor, the B Reactor, you can go inside!
that makes sense, right?

Hanford Nuclear Reservation 1944-1987
Tumblr media
Part of the Manhattan Project, the Hanford site is the worlds first full-scale nuclear reactors that generated two thirds of the plutonium generated in the US. The operation resulted in tanks of toxic, radioactive sludge near the banks of the Columbia river, on of Americas largest rivers. Over time, improper storage resulted in leaching of over 60 different radionuclides. Hanford contains 60 percent of the nation’s high-level radioactive waste and is considered by many to be one of North America’s most contaminated nuclear sites.
Potential pathways of uptake for radionuclides in the area are present in sediments, soil, waters, and in the wildlife. While concentration of radionuclides flux in the Columbia River, on average 300,000 curies of activity is discharged per year. Benchmark for radionuclide exposure is 1 rad/year. Biota in the area were measured in 1992 by the DOE's contracted laboratory observed salmon eggs exposed to 0.00443 rad/d, 0.73 rad/d for the highest exposed fish and 1 rad/d for plant eating ducks. Most reproductive effects for adult fish are observed at 0.4 rad/d.
Once its closure in 1987, the Hanford site was placed in the National Priorities list in 1989. In 2003, the Department of Energy made an effort to reclassify all waste at the Hanford site in order to have no oversight by the EPA, states of Washington and Oregon, or by the Yakama Nation. Yakama Nation, the Shoshone-Bannock tribes, and the Snake River Alliance together sued the DOE and won: Courts noted that only Congress has the authority to reclassify waste. Though, in 2019 the DOE “reclassified” the toxic nuclear waste in Hanford’s tanks without any oversight by the U.S. EPA, the state or by the Yakama Nation, contradicting explicit directions of the Nuclear Waste Policy Act passed by Congress in 1982 and violating the Yakama treaty.
Though it is estimated to cost  $240 billion to clean up the site by the US Government Accountability Office, as of 2009 over $100 Billion have been invested in the site to remove/replace leaky storage tanks.
