Mad World (book 3): Mad Love by Hannah McBride
I TRIED TO BE MADELAINE.
It started with a twin switch that was supposed to be temporary. It ended with me being locked up in an asylum, hidden from Ryan Cain, the man I love more than life. Vowing to avenge my sister's murder may have resulted in my captivity, but there's one truth that still remains:
I'LL ALWAYS BE MADISON.
We underestimated what my father was capable of, and now I'm on my own. Only I can put an end to this sadistic game before it costs me everything: my friends, my future, and Ryan.
TIME IS RUNNING OUT. I'M DONE BEING MAD; IT'S TIME TO GET EVEN.
Mad Love is the final book in the Mad World trilogy. It contains content that may be upsetting to some readers, so please read with caution.

My Review: 5/5 Stars
Amazing end to this series! What a rollercoaster of a series for Maddie and Ryan. Now everything comes together in this final book and boy was it worth the wait. Especially after that crazy cliffhanger from the previous book. I couldn't wait to get my hands on Mad Love and it was worth the wait. The book picks up shortly after the last one ended. Ryan is waiting for his friends to get him the charges that arrested him dropped so he can find Maddie. He knows every minute he is held up is another minute wasted where he can get Maddie back. And the second he is free, he'll be going after Maddie and her father with everything he's got. Maddie, meanwhile, is stuck at the asylum her father put her in. Between the drugs and the corrupted doctors, she knows her only chance is to wait for Ryan and her friends to find her. She just has to survive long enough.
This book is filled with twists and turns the entire way. Just when you think you have something figured out, it changes. So many secrets are revealed and questions are answered. I never knew what was going to happen next or where Maddie and Ryan would end up or how they would find each other again. And just when you think someone is safe, another thing happens. You are kept on your toes the entire time! Right until the very end.
I absolutely loved this story. Maddie and Ryan have come so far in their relationship. Their love for one another is stronger than ever. And every challenge they face, brings them closer together. Then there is the rest of the crew. Every person in this story deserves their own book and story because every character is interesting in their own way. I loved all their dynamics. You don't want to miss this final book for Maddie and Ryan's arc. Cause yes, I'm hoping a few more characters get their own story! But prepare for lots of action, steamy romance, some tears, lots of laughs, and a story that will have you racing to get to the end to see how it all plays out. Hannah McBride is fantastic and I can't wait for more!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Back when I was a Librarian, we lived and breathed by the Publisher's Weekly Bestseller List. It was my responsibility to print or photocopy the list every week and update our bestseller's display. (Also to purchase extra copies of particularly popular bestsellers.)
I haven't looked at the list in YEARS. Some of these surprise me:
A new translation of The Iliad made the list?!
Ken Follett is still alive?? (I looked him up, he's only 74.)
Danielle Steel is still alive?? ( I just looked her up, she's only 76 and has been married five(!) times. To be fair, I also looked up Ken Follett, he's only been married twice.)
I see some Christmas-themed books on the list!
I see a Disney manga! (“The Battle for Pumpkin King”)

Some of my favorite “coming out” “scenes”
Or not-coming-out but more like canon-implications-that-basically-confirm-a-queer-character without a coming out speech. I’m bored with coming out speeches/scenes, “marketed sexuality”, and forced coming out/gossiped coming out. This list is from a mix of mostly podcasts, but also books/movies/TV/games. Last updated Aug 2022.
Established queer couple from their introduction, no coming out needed:
Tiffany & Keisha (Blood Crow Stories)
Buddy/Vespa, Quanyii/Caroline (The Penumbra Podcast)
Deena & Sam, Sarah Fier & Hannah Miller (Fear Street series)
Zelda & Pat (Mission Rejected)
Jason & Lucas Cawfield (The Glass Appeal)
Cherry & Vesta (Fuck Humans)
Meydinyor & Aule (Hulm)
Feltina & Humph (Fall of the House of Sunshine)
Sam/Allen, Anna/Maria, Bill/Robert (Sheridan Tapes)
Tommy & David (Putting 2 & 2 Together)
Emmy & Jo (Trials of Apollo: The Dark Prophecy)
Strone/Chipwick/Rel (Hubris round 5 ep 4)
Obvious life circumstance implications:
Wyatt Whaley (Blood Crow Stories)- has period products.
Frankie Meeks (The College Tapes)- said he changed his name.
Elle (Heartstopper) - changed from boys to girls school.
Apollo (Trials of Apollo) - OG!Apollo’s various mythology lovers + adds more male/female love interests
Cast of Surrender Your Sons- they’re at a conversion therapy camp
The Flame cast- owner of a gay bar, all the main characters are lesbian
Gay Future- it’s literally a gay future
Clay (How I Died)- wears a binder
Ethan McBride (Killing Spree)- gay porn stash
Most of Last Night at the Telegraph Club- attendees of a dyke bar
Conversation confirmations:
Machie/Rez (Vacant Arcadia) - They have FOUR songs dedicated to flirting with computer programming. Can’t get any gayer than that.
Piper Lee (Null/Void) - “I’m in a closet.” “Thanks for coming out, but is this the right time?” “No I’m actually hiding in a closet, but not the homophobic kind. Someone is about to catch me.” My favorite.
Mike Walters (WOE.BEGONE)- challenge featuring his exboyfriend
Nick Waters (Archive 81) - question challenge about ex-boyfriends
Monty Montague (Montague sibling series)- listing his dating history + flirts with everyone
Robin Buckley (Stranger Things) - implies her crush on Tammy Thompson & Steve/the audience just gets it
Zachary Ying (Zachary Ying & the Dragon Emperor) - “I don’t like girls!”
Lucius (Our Flag Means Death)- "I lied to my mom that I liked girls!”
Reyna (Trials of Apollo) - laughs her head off & complains that people think she needs a romantic partner
Quincy (Blood Crow Stories) - flirts with guys & girls + Travis: “Omg sis, I don’t care who you sleep with.”
Zach (Keep It Steady podcast) - rants about his obvious crush on Gabe
Characters from Shimanami Tasogare by Yuhki Kamatani. Ok I mentioned that BL/GL won’t be included, however this one is a special mention because its more like a LGBT+ manga than a BL/GL. There’s several queer characters at different stages of their life and while several of the coming out or reveals (if they’ve already come out long ago) were in homophobic situations, they were understandable and realistic. I’d say my favorite unfortunate “coming out” is Utsumi‘s arc and fave positive coming out is Haruko & Saki’s arc. I say arcs bc several characters have to come out multiple times, which is really realistic :O
Action confirmations:
Kyoshi & Rangi (Avatar Kyoshi novels) - confess & kiss
Rupert & Amir (The Two Princes) - confess & kiss
Pangla (Fall of the House of Sunshine)- transitions during an episode
Juno Steel (Penumbra Podcast)- kisses Peter, addressed as both guy & lady
Angel & Bast (Fuck Humans) - they hook up
Caitlyn Kiramman (Arcane)- in a brothel with a female prostitute
Aiden Jamison (Swipe Right for Murder)- goes on DirtyPaws
Ellie Williams (The Last of Us) - kisses Riley
Zagreus (Hades, game) - hooks up with Thanatos & Megara
Travis (Blood Crow Stories) - hooks up with guys
Conrad & Rudyard (The Vanishing Act) - confess & kiss
Paul (Moonface)- hooks up with several guys
Rita (Penumbra) - open to anyone at brothel + flirts with Yasmin
Jake Wheeler (Chucky TV 2021) - ok technically the actual “gay” confirmation was across 3 heated arguments that included the f-slur, but the first official signs was Jake very obviously oogling Devon.
Syd Carter (Proxy) - the initial outing was unpleasant but made sense in context, but the better reveal was kissing Knox
Character referred by neo-pronouns/nonbinary/multiple pronouns immediately:
Many many many characters from Under the Electric Stars

Mad World (book 2): Mad As Hell by Hannah McBride
I USED TO BE MADISON I was stupid for thinking that I could just step into my twin's world. And I was an idiot for trusting Ryan Cain with my heart. Lesson freaking learned. I won't make that mistake again.
MADELAINE IS DEAD My sister wasn't a saint, but she didn't deserve the hell she endured before her death. Gary. Beckett. Adam. Even Ryan. They will all pay for their sins, because now?
NOW I'M JUST MAD
Mad As Hell is the second book in the Mad World series. It is an enemies-to-lovers, bullymance college story with an alphahole hero and a determined heroine.

My Review: 5/5 Stars
This story was crazy! I was so happy to get my hands on an ARC of this book because the cliffhanger of the last one, kept me up for hours after I read it. Note: never finish a book before you go to sleep because you won't be sleeping when you start thinking of all the possibilities of what just happened and what can possibly go on in the next book. But Mad As Hell is finally here and woah. So much goes down in this story. And we have yet another insane cliffhanger that has me demanding for book 3 asap.
This story picks up almost immediately where the last book left off and good news, we get some Ryan point of view throughout. And we definitely needed Ryan to figure some stuff out. The rules have changed in this book for Maddie. Maddie's life has gotten way more complicated with her father showing his true colors and the leash he has on her has tightened around her neck when he threatens the people she cares about. She'll have to play by his rules for a bit until she can figure out a way to beat him once and for all. And don't get her started on Ryan. Her heart is broken after Ryan's betrayal and it will take a lot for her to forgive him and let alone trust him. The two of them have a lot to work on in this book but they also have to figure out a plan against their father. And turns out Ryan and his friends have been working on something for a while. But can they get the pieces in motion before something else terrible happens?
I couldn't put this story down. I had so much I needed to know. Like if Maddie would forgive Ryan and what he was going to do to earn her trust again. Their plan for their fathers and even secrets Madelaine was keeping. Turns out she had even more secrets stored up. So many revelations in this story. Plot twists on plot twists. And don't forget all the steamy romance. And for all the dark and twisted things, there were lots of laughs and sweet moments with all these great characters. And so many new ones introduced as well! I definitely wouldn't mind some books with several of these characters getting their own. Hannah truly knows how to reel you in and make you demand for more when it comes to her stories. I cannot wait to see how Maddie and Ryan and the rest of the gang will get out of the trouble they landed in at the very end. You definitely don't want to miss this story!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
