I’ve finally played all four routes of Three Houses, and it only took me until like, 2-3 weeks after the next game in the series came out. Epilogues, untouched by the wayseer:

In summation, Flayn likes powerful men and Hanneman and Manuela apparently can’t get enough of each other.

Thoughts on routes and best route order below the cut, along with controversial archetype opinions:

Azure Moon - definitely the best one to start on. Has the big cinematic reveal of who Edelgard is right after Dimitri talks about who she is and what she means to him. It has the least to do with the Agarthans or Imperial motivations. Dimitri’s character arc is cool, and it’s a more personal story about Kingdom characters with cameos of others.

Crimson Flower - then, the other side of the conflict. Gives a bit more info about why Edelgard is up to things, introduces the Agarthans, gives the other side of the central Kingdom-Empire conflict (last chapter in Kingdom capital against a desperate dragon, compared to last chapter in Empire capital against a desperate abomination). Does nothing about the Agarthans other than be like “these are our allies we’re wary of”, slotting it neatly between Azure Moon and the last two routes as an intro to the (Slavic for some reason? I got spoiled for other things but not that Shambhala was covered in readable Cyrillic) Molemen Lore.

Silver Snow - Back to the save point, decide to go against Edelgard instead and see what happens. I mean, I didn’t actually do that, since I wanted to make it an Ashen Wolves + faculty playthrough and wanted to avoid giving Edie and Hubert experience that others could get, but one less White Clouds playthrough is good for the soul. Though it could be interesting playing Black Eagles against their classmates, the Church characters are great and deserve some focus, so honestly would highly recommend focusing more on them. You fight Rhea in the end in both Black Eagle routes, and if they’re close together, you can mark the differences in how she’s treated. Also the Edelgard defeat scene makes way more sense here than in Verdant Wind and is more impactful after the reunion fight animation post-timeskip. It should be seen in context here first rather than being confusing in Verdant Wind, plus, does hit harder if you have sided with her already.

Verdant Wind - You’ve done the surface-level major conflict already, that’s now on the sidelines, it’s time for the ones caught up in the middle (and from outside Fódlan) to demand some lore and then open up to the rest of the world, bringing the routes from the insular and lore-light routes to the lore-heavy one involving the most outsiders.

What I did though: Silver Snow | Verdant Wind. It’s more complicated to put these two in any order since they’re basically identical other than characters involved, so ironically, feels like playing them concurrently is actually better than playing them side by side. They’re way too similar, but at least if they’re played together, you can pick up on small differences more than “ugh, again?”, such as skipping Gronder Field and Claude pushing for info from Rhea where Byleth accepts what’s being said, and food for thought on implications (why does Rhea snap in one and not the other, for example? Did Edelgard treat her worse as a prisoner of war when The Professor takes her side?) Still, I’d put the Nemesis fight after Rhea fight. The opening up of Fódlan and Nemesis getting put down is a more uplifting conclusion than Rhea succumbing, and it’s the point I prefer to have it end on.

Also, Edelgard and Dimitri are a take on Alm/Celica.

Prince and princess of opposing lands. Princess, the “one” surviving child of a haggard-looking king’s consort. Knew each other for a short while in childhood before the princess was taken away again. The Agarthans go on about pitting “the children” against each other, Alm and Celica both have the brands. Echoes came out directly before Three Houses, they added a bunch more fight scenes between Alm and Celica for little reason. Alm is “the jasper lion”, Dimitri is a “blue lion”. Edelgard allies with the Agarthans, Celica… it’s not one to one, but she sure did go along with what the Duma Faithful asked of her. Also I’ve heard things that happen to Edelgard in Three Hopes which tie into some things which happened to Celica in Echoes and not in the original Gaiden which makes me even more suspicious lmao.

Okay, it’s not exact one to one, but the main thing that sparked the notion is they were childhood friends and then Edelgard was taken away, while Echoes was really recent. Three Houses is just wider than Echoes because multiple routes and Claude.

I don't understand one thing only, he talk about having a family a lot,muggle kids and other things like that. He is rich, in relationship so whats stopping him? Like its been 2 years of just words and still nothing. I very much want him to be hapy but seems like he is still waiting for something or someone. Quite weird if you ask me. In a lot of cameos he talk about life starts after 40yo, so maybe he is waiting to be 40 idk

Maybe he only mentions these things because he thinks it's sweet and this is something fans want to hear? Or because this is what a person his age is supposed to be saying? Very often the things we say and how we really feel about it can be opposite.

Either done by some sort of craigslist ad or connected by mutual friends because Ashe needs a roommate and Yuri needs a place to live... dimihapi cameo of hapi kicking yuri out but Dimi knows just the person for him to live with ;)

Ashe manages to keep the place quite tidy, so he definitely doesn’t want a messy roommate! Luckily Yuri isn’t messy, but sometimes he leaves things out on purpose just to mess with Ashe.

Back and forth shenanigans, almost always initiated by Yuri.

Probably a bit of a love at first sight + hopeless pining scenario... and Yuri probably denying feelings

I really love fire emblem shipping because with multiple canon A and S-supports (and some creations of my own mind) I get to indulge in this chaotic reality I've constructed that everyone is woefully in love with each other and it is a big beautiful polyam mess.

Edelgard and Byleth are over here being literal soulmates with their matching crests and star-crossed destinies, meanwhile Edelgard and Claude are reinventing romance AND geopolitics at the same time. Sylvain and Felix are giving us slowburn childhood friends-to-lovers while Felix is also holding Annette's hand, and Dimitri's, and also Byleth's, all at the same time...Mercedes is topping women and Sylvain left and right. Dorothea is currently married to six different people (Petra, Byleth, Edelgard, Sylvain, Claude, Ferdinand, Yuri, fuck, that's seven) and they all spoil her ROTTEN. Dimitri has declared Byleth his spouse and royal partner and also soulmate which is a problem, because Edelgard, Claude, and Petra have all declared the same thing synchronously. Sylvain has had his mlm awakening and has gone on dates with twelve different men in the past week one of them being Hubert another being Claude. He's feeling really sure about this one guy he met - sensitive artist type (it's Ignatz). Hubert and Ferdinand have been married 30 years even though they've only known each other for 7, and also Hubert is dating Claude (I must ensure that he is a proper match for you, Lady Edelgard) (alternatively: aight u dating her? u dating me too, bitch). Claude and Hilda make out regularly but they are just friends. Sylvain and Byleth have been cohabitating together for 50 years as platonic life partners and ardently refuse to get married. Dorothea is helping Edelgard prepare for her cameo role in the opera that she wrote for her. Balthus is calling his husband Holst to wire some money to his bank account while laying in bed with Claude. Hapi and Yuri and Constance have all recently announced their engagement to each other (the happy throuple!). Byleth and Seteth are fishing and happily raising Flayn who is hundreds of years older than Byleth but it's okay, it isn't weird. But Byleth is also retired to the mercenary lifestyle with Shamir and they run away to Dagda, but also Petra is there with them. Ingrid is kissing women. Edelgard and Lysithea are feeding each other sweets and reading philosophy for pleasure in the Imperial courtyard. Dorothea is nearby singing and braiding Bernie's hair for her date with Felix later. Raphael and Ignatz are going on their fifth honeymoon - they run into Caspar and Linhardt, who are on their twelvth. Dorothea and Byleth are royalty in four different countries, five by technicality. Dimitri and Claude might be a thing???? Yuri and Byleth are having sex. Cyril is reading the poem that Lysithea wrote for him - and starting to write one of his own back. Hilda is a girlboss CEO who gets railed by her wives Marianne and Leonie on a nightly basis. Dimitri and Dedue have invented the romantic royal/retainer trope. That's it. They invented it. Byleth is buying Jeritza his favorite ice cream. Hubert and Dorothea are hanging out. Hilda and Edelgard are probably hatekissing. Claude is patiently waiting for Lorenz to figure out bisexuality

I wrote this for the man I met in the wrong time. The time when my heart was full of suppressed feelings, what ifs and what could've beens. Choosing between doing the right thing and your hapiness hurts differently. But I am happy for you now. I realized that we are not the right person-wrong time kind of love. Because if you were really the right person, no matter how wrong the timing is, it wont hold us back. We were just two individuals having a cameo in the story of our separate lives.

I loved the way we ate ice cream and fries at 1 oclock in the morning, walking at the streets with our sleeping wear and hotel slippers on. I hate the way you smell me. It makes me feel uncomfortable. I hate the way you pinch my arms. It makes me feel fat. (rofl) I hate that you’re so kind to me. Fe3h Byleth?

How I feel about this character: I like her! And whenever she’s around Rhea, I fear for her safety! All the people I ship romantically with this character: There’s... a lot. To whit: Catherine, Dimitri, Dorothea, Edelgard, Felix, Hapi, Linhardt, Manuela, Mercedes, Shamir, Sylvain, and Yuri. My non-romantic OTP for this character: Flayn, for the same reasons I mentioned when I got an ask about Flayn. My unpopular opinion about this character: She’s not a wish-fulfillment self-insert. One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I really wish Byleth had been fully-voiced. my OTP: That’s probably Dimileth, though I’m also digging Sylveth a lot these days... just not in the way anyone else seems to dig Sylveth. my cross over ship: Don’t have one. a headcanon fact: The fact that my avatar, Melusine, is autistic, will come up in every fic in which she has more than a cameo role--I should think the tag I use makes that clear. She’s faced a lot of social isolation and bigotry because of it, and the reason she trusts Rhea so much, so quickly, is because Rhea’s the only person with power over her who has ever been consistently nice to her and not once treated her like she’s ‘simple’ or some sort of freak. Needless to say, the revelation that Rhea was absolutely, 100% going to murder her so somebody else could go around wearing her corpse doesn’t go over well, at all.
