KING GEORGE VI photographed by PETER NORTH, 1937
[photographing the King is] an occasion upon which even a photographer much more sure of himself than I am would feel nervous; but I need not have worried, for His Majesty immediately put me at ease, and in him I found an ideal sitter. He is so thoughtful for the photographer, helpful and understanding in everything that might assist in making the picture a success, that, no matter what the results, one feels that for him one should have done even better work still.

NMTDaily: Hero and Ursula’s Transmedia Accounts Debut
- I don’t think I ever knew that Hero had a transmedia Instagram account. That’s new to me! I’m excited to see what else she posts on it throughout the series.
- I do remember Ursula’s tumblr but I don’t know if I ever scrolled back enough to see the photos in the most recent email before. It’s extremely cute that she includes links to follow “My Friend Hero”, “My Friend Bea”, and “My Friend Ben”. She’s a sweetheart. Ursula deserves the world and so much more appreciation.
- It’s also really interesting that she considers herself friends with Ben before the events of the series happen to combine the two halves of the friend group. It’s probably because she’s best friends with Balthazar and he’s the crossover friend who is close friends with both the girls’ group and the boys’ group. I think it’s very possible that Ben doesn’t fully realize that Ursula thinks of him as a friend and not just an acquaintance because she’s so quiet and it can be hard to know what she’s thinking. Now I’m really interested in what their friendship would be like. They probably wouldn’t hang out one on one, but they would enjoy each other and never quite know how to tell each other that. Which is definitely a type of high school friend experience people have that rings true to me. All from the tiny detail of her linking to his channel on her tumblr. I wonder if he links to her channel on his? I bet he does, I have to look out for that.
- Update: oh my god I just scrolled through Ursula’s tumblr and saw that she posted Ben’s first vlog and mentioned in the tags that she helped him edit it! He “tried to do everything himself” and almost managed it, apparently. That says to me that he was probably complaining about how hard editing was, and Ursula offered to help. And I checked, he thanked her in the video description on that vlog. Ben and Ursula canonically hang out and edit his first video just the two of them???? Excuse me, this changes so many things. I am now obsessed with the Ben and Ursula friendship. This is definitely, for Ben, an example of that thing where social anxiety makes you kind of selfish and unappreciative of the friends you do have, because you dislike yourself so much you never believe they really like you, and then you hold them at arm’s length and never realize that’s literally why you’re so lonely. Ben probably feels like he doesn’t know how to talk to Ursula because Ursula is so quiet, and I bet she can get overwhelmed by him, but also sees that his heart is in the right place. And this makes Ursula yet another friend who has doubtless hung out with Bea and Ben separately and heard them complain about each other, so of course she’s on Team Love Gods. She’s just so dear and eager to help her friends, I love Ursula.
- I am also still sad that Ben never had an in-world Tumblr account I could have followed. It’s not story-necessary, but I’d have liked it.
- I kept thinking the grass was bugs and getting scared, but I still like seeing Ursula’s nature photography. She’s definitely growing up to be a pro videographer/photographer/director/cinematographer or something.
- Ursula also posted a picture of a TARDIS cake she and Hero baked for Bea, which, first, why are there not more Hero and Ursula friendship fluff fics AND Hersula ship fics about them baking together? I love this. They are so cute and sweet.
- Does this cake post mean we have an approximate canonical birthday for Beatrice? Baking a cake for someone feels like a birthday thing. It was posted on March 30, so is Bea’s birthday March 30? This is huge, I don’t think we ever got anyone’s birthday except Hero’s elsewhere in the series! Unless the cake is a belated Welcome to Auckland cake? I haven’t rewatched Bea’s first video yet, I’m terrible, I know, so I don’t remember how long she’s been in town. They didn’t actually say it was her birthday, so it’s probably a Welcome cake. Oh well. Still sweet!
- Also, the tags say the cake is banana cake! So Beatrice already likes Ben’s favorite food, and she’s definitely a huge fan of Doctor Who even though she downplays that to avoid praising anything connected to Benedick. She’s so stubborn, I love her, and they are meant to be. This will not be the last detail indicating how much they have in common and see eye-to-eye. I love all of it.
- I also love that this isn’t the last themed cake to appear! I remember the dalek cake from the pizza party later in the series. Ursula and Hero were hobby bakers and shippers on deck from the start!
- The email with the cake post is titled “putting the Who in superwholock”, which is so incredibly 2014, and also makes me realize that the NMTD characters were really only WhoLocks, none of them were Supernatural fans that I remember. I just find that funny given what a behemoth it was and is on tumblr. I don’t blame them, it’s the one of the three I’ve seen the least of too, it’s just amusing. I actually don’t know if it ever even aired over there, to be fair.
- We also got Bea’s first tweet, in the email with her first video, but it’s pretty simple, nothing to dissect. We get some good tweets later on, though! I promise I’ll make a post about Bea’s first video before the next video email on Wednesday. I’ve decided I don’t have to post recaps day-of, I just want to do them eventually.
- MVP of the past few emails: Ursula! You go, Ursula. Jules 20genderchild is so right that you deserved a last name!!!!

London,Charing Cross Road,1934
By Wolfgang Suschitzky
Austrian cinematographer and photographer Wolf Suschitzky captured the slow-paced life of London with his characteristic cinematic precision. Before becoming the chief cameraman for documentarian Paul Roth, he managed to film the lives of ordinary people against the backdrop of anti-fascist demonstrations and parliamentary elections.

What is cinematography? Hannibal edition
We know Hannibal often gets cited for its beautiful cinematography. But what does that mean, exactly?
If we talk about the cinematography of an episode, we're talking about the decisions that went into making each shot and scene and episode look just right. It's helpful to remember that at its most basic level, film (or television) is just about using some sort of camera equipment to photograph light. And when you do that, there are a ton of variables affecting the way that recorded light is going to look when you play it back.
Tumblr media
Hannibal gets it.
Cinematography means: "We've got these amazing actors performing this great story in this scenic location, now how do we light and photograph all this stuff so that it looks exactly the way we want?"
And this is super important, because of course, the way a scene or shot looks is going to deeply affect what it makes us think and feel.
Elements of cinematography:
Lighting
Types of cameras and lenses, and how you use them
Shot distance (how close you place the camera for each shot)
Shot composition (figuring out where to place everything in each shot, including actors)
Use of color, brightness, shadow, contrast (very important in a "dark" show like this)
Camera movement
Camera angles
Depth of focus (do we want to clearly see everything that's in the shot? or do we want to have things in focus and others out of focus? should the focus change during the shot or stay the same?)
So really, when we say that a show has beautiful cinematography, we more or less mean that the way it's shot is beautiful, striking, evocative. We can tell that someone didn't just throw on some basic flat network procedural lighting and shoot from all the conventional angles. They put thought and style into it.
What does a cinematographer actually do?
The cinematographer is also called the director of photography (DP). They work closely with the director, workshopping their vision with them. They're in charge of both the camera crew and the lighting crew, deciding what they should do to make every scene look exactly the way it should. They read the script ahead of time, and they visit sets and locations before shooting to plan how they're going to tackle the look of each scene.
Director of photography might sound like kind of a secondary position, but not really! It's incredibly important. Hannibal had the same cinematographer, James Hawkinson, working on almost every single episode. This isn't always the case in television, so I think we're very lucky that he was such a consistent part of the artistic process.
Tumblr media
Hawkinson dropping that DP wisdom in the season 2 DVD extras.
Check out this interview, in which Bryan Fuller explains how when he saw Hawkinson's cinematography in action, he changed his whole approach to writing the series:
Hawkinson’s cinematography helped elevate the network show into one of the most visually exciting series ever produced for any platform. [...] Bryan Fuller and his staff had written five episodes that tried to toe the tricky line between Thomas Harris’ Hannibal Lecter novels and the structured storytelling of a network investigative procedural. “I remember leaving the edit session where we’d seen the first cut [of the pilot] and I was like, ‘We’re doing the wrong show,” said Fuller in an interview with IndieWire. “When I saw David Slade and Jim Hawkinson’s work, and really understood the artful piece that they were able to conjure for what we had, I threw out the scripts.”
I mean, this says a lot, right? Fuller is saying that he completely rewrote the beginning of the first season, in part because Hawkinson's photography on the pilot made him realize they had the chance to reach for something deeper, something more artistic than he'd thought possible.
Tumblr media
Gorgeous moody lighting and photography from the very first episode.
With new directors working on the show from week to week, and Hawkinson needing to work closely with each of them, it became part of his job to make sure they were on the right wavelength with show's vision. He talked in this interview about how he would sometimes need to "check" guest directors if their ideas didn't quite fit the Hannibal style:
There's times where I've been asked to do shots that I didn't feel were the show. And as the director of photography, keeping the aesthetics consistent from director to director, I have to protect and justify the aesthetics of the show. So that's kind of a torch that I kind of just bear, whatever director comes in. [...] Say someone has a vision of a dead person and I'll be asked by a guest director to put smoke and backlight. And I'll argue that ... as soon as you do it becomes hokey and it becomes a B-movie and it's cliché. So the horror in Hannibal is more based in some sort of reality. Yes it's heightened but ... there's nothing fantastical about it.
We can see here that Hawkinson knew the visual language of Hannibal inside and out, and he played a key part in keeping it so consistent and distinctive. The show became known for its evocative color palette, thoughtful shot compositions, and use of light and shadow -- all elements of cinematography. And as Hawkinson said, it was always important that the violence and death at the center of the show was photographed artistically, emotionally... even beautifully.
Tumblr media
A horror image becomes moving and mysterious through cinematography.
Imagine how different this shot could have felt with a different quality of light. Or if we were looking from a different angle, or distance. Cinematography is all about making sure those elements are perfectly positioned, as much as possible, so that we see the show just the way its creative team hoped we would.

Early Soviet Cinematographers and Directors, Brothers Dziga Vertov (Denis Kaufman) and Mikhail Kaufman     Uncredited and Undated Photograph
There was actually a third Kaufman brother who was also a cinematographer.  Boris Kaufman was the only one of the Kaufman sibs to move to the west.  He first emigrated to France, where he worked with Jean Vigo and then to the United States, where he was the fave cinematographer of Elia Kazan (and considering the politics of his brothers, there’s a certain irony to that) and Sidney Lumet, doing the camera work on “On the Waterfront,” “Baby Doll,” “Splendor in the Grass,” “12 Angry Men,” and “The Pawnbroker,” among many others.

The 10 Best Caitriona Balfe Movies and TV Shows, Ranked
With her starring role as Claire on the hit fantasy romance series Outlander, Irish actress Caitríona Balfe has become one of the biggest leading ladies in television. Despite her stardom though, Balfe has been careful with her roles, with IMDb listing just 17 acting credits to her name across a career though, to be fair, it doesn't count some of her earliest short film roles nor her blink-and-you-miss-it appearance in the hit fashion comedy The Devil Wears Prada.
The approach has undeniably been one of quality over quantity though, with Balfe's filmography including two Oscar-winning pictures, underrated animated gems, and supporting parts in major blockbusters alongside some of Hollywood's biggest names. These 10 films and television series present as the best projects the actress has been involved with over her career thus far.
🔟 Angela's Christmas Wish (2020)
Tumblr media
Image: Netflix
Throughout her career, Caitríona Balfe has always offered her voice acting to underrated gems of animated cinema. One such example of that is her work on the festive Irish animated film Angela’s Christmas Wish, a sequel to the Emmy-nominated animated short Angela’s Christmas which follows a young girl’s hopes to reunite her family, especially her father working in Australia.
The quaint picture boasted a war-hearted charm which made it an adorable family Christmas picture which, at just 47 minutes long, was easy for young viewers to embrace. Balfe’s role was a minor one as the mother of one of the protagonist’s friends, but she was able to use her natural Irish accent.
9️⃣ Now You See Me (2013)
Tumblr media
Photo: Lionsgate
A magician heist movie with a modern spin on the steal from the rich and give to the poor narrative, Now You See Me became a fan favorite film of 2013. It follows the performative magician troupe ‘The Four Horseman’ and the FBI and Interpol agents trying to uncover how they are able to steal money from major banks to give to the audience as part of the show.
Michael Caine plays the Four Horseman’s wealthy sponsor with Caitriona Balfe playing his young wife. Sadly, the role didn’t give Balfe a huge chance to make much of an impact, but it did get the actress on screen alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest names before her career took off with Outlander.
8️⃣ Lost Angeles (2012)
Tumblr media
Photo: Burgandy Films
An indie comedy-drama focusing on the whirlwind that life can be in the city of Los Angeles, Lost Angeles was the first feature length film to give Balfe a real chance to showcase her acting talents. The film follows homeless ex-con as he is released from prison and moves to L.A. where he claims to be a legitimate photographer to get work.
As Jared (Kelly Blatz) becomes embroiled in the sleazy underbelly of celebrity stardom, the film takes on a grittier tone, one that Balfe was well suited to with her minor role as Veronique. The film was directed by acclaimed cinematographer Phedon Papamichael.
7️⃣ Super 8 (2011)
Tumblr media
Image: Paramount Pictures
Released in 2011, J.J. Abrams’ sci-fi thriller is something of an overlooked gem in his blockbuster filmography. Set in 1979, it follows a group of kids using a super 8 camera to film a zombie film when they accidentally capture a terrible train crash on film only to discover it may not have been an accident as strange things start happening around town.
With the aura of the summer blockbuster hits from Steven Spielberg’s early days, Super 8 excelled as an effects-driven action spectacle, but it found its true brilliance in its quieter, more dramatic notes. Despite only appearing in flashbacks and photos, Caitríona Balfe had a huge emotional impact on the film as the recently deceased mother of one of the kid's, and the late wife of the town's Deputy Sheriff.
6️⃣ Escape Plan (2013)
Tumblr media
Photo: Lionsgate
Yet another minor role before her career erupted, Escape Plan featured Balfe in the small but important part of Jessica Miller, the CIA operative who hires renowned jail breaker Ray Breslin (Sylvester Stallone) to escape from a top-secret maximum-security prison. The majority of the film follows Breslin as he befriends fellow inmate Emil Rottmayer (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and plots his escape.
Eventually it is revealed that Rottmayer is Jessica Miller’s father, and she hired Breslin to mastermind his escape. The film has achieved a certain cult classic status and gave Balfe a meaningful supporting role alongside two of the biggest names in Hollywood history.
5️⃣ Money Monster (2016)
Tumblr media
Photo: Sony Pictures Releasing
Directed by Jodie Foster, Money Monster was a compact thriller which followed the host of a financial television show as he and the crew are held hostage by an outraged investor. The true villain of the film turns out to be Walt Camby (Dominic West), a CEO whose manipulation of a trading algorithm for self-gain was what resulted in the financial crisis of the young gunman and many others around the world.
Catriona Balfe portrays Camby’s chief communications officer who proves to be the underlying hero of the film, using her inside information on Camby to investigate his wrongdoing and reveal the truth. The socioeconomic themes gave the film a distinct modern punch, one which thrived off the back of its impressive cast.
4️⃣ The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (2019)
Tumblr media
Photo: Netflix
One of the most eclectic and underrated projects Balfe has bene involved with is Netflix's The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, a miniseries which served as a prequel to the 1982 cult classic film The Dark Crystal. Like the 82 movie, Age of Resistance used puppetry to tell the story, focusing on a band of Gelflings who seek to unite the clans of their people to stand against the Skeksis and save their home world.
Balfe voiced Tavra, a Paladin warrior and Princess of the Vapra Clan who often has to serve as the peacekeeper between her two stubborn sisters. Balfe played the part of the tritagonist well, giving her a composed presence which stood out amid an A-list cast of voice talent.
3️⃣ Ford v Ferrari (2019)
Tumblr media
Photo: Twentieth Century Fox
A racing drama focusing on Ford’s efforts to beat Ferrari at the 24 hours of Le Mans race, Ford v Ferrari became a major hit on its way to winning two Academy Awards. It predominantly follows the relationship between Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon), an American car designer, and Ken Miles (Christian Bale), a temperamental British driver.
Balfe’s supporting role sees her portray Mollie Miles, Ken’s no-nonsense yet devoted wife ever supportive of her husband. Admittedly, it would have been great to see Balfe get more of a chance to display the agonizing angst that goes into loving someone involved in such a dangerous sport, but she plays the supporting part to a tee, becoming a major reason why the hot-headed Ken was so accessible to audiences.
2️⃣ Outlander (2014-)
Tumblr media
Photo: Starz
A centuries-spanning romantic epic loaded with fantasy wonder and historical grandiosity, Outlander has become one of the biggest television series of the 2010s and early 2020s. Based on Diana Gabaldon's best-selling novels, it follows a military nurse in WWII who is swept back in time to 1743 where she meets and falls in love with a Scottish Highland warrior, documenting their adventures across the world and through time.
Starring alongside Sam Heughan, the role of Claire Randall shot Balfe to international stardom, making her a household name for fantasy fans while seeing her win numerous British television awards. The penultimate seventh season of Outlander is currently airing on Starz.
1️⃣ Belfast (2021)
Tumblr media
Photo: Focus Features
Irish cinema has been thriving lately, with 2021’s Oscar-winning hit Belfast one of the best dramas in recent years. The semi-autobiographical coming-of-age film from Kenneth Branagh takes place amid the tumult of 1960s Belfast, following a nine-year-old boy’s childhood experiences and reactions to the rising tensions around him.
Balfe portrays the boy’s mother, a hard-working and steadfast woman who, with help from her in-laws, looks after her two sons while her husband has to work long stints in England. Balfe was exceptional throughout the film, playing the role with a grounded, weighted power with her scene on the bus particularly unforgettable, highlighting Balfe's raw and heartbreaking performance.

I have no idea what they were thinking when lighting this awesome engineer.
This is the kind of shit Black folks are talking about when they get frustrated with photographers and cinematographers not knowing how to light darker skin.
This edge lighting can look cool and dramatic for people with lighter skin, but in this video he has a dark shadow down the middle of his face. It makes it look like he has one huge eyebrow, plus you literally can't see his eyes in close up.
Tumblr media
A simple reflector in front of him to bounce some light into his face could have still maintained the edge lighting effect they were going for without creating a black hole in the center of his face.

September/October 1973 Ah, Youth, The Life Of an O’riginal Chainsaw Gal
A deep spring cleaning brought these little gems above to the surface.
In the days following filming Chainsaw ’74, after we’d wrapped, we were all finding our path, looking for ways to make money. I wasn’t in the brutal chainsaw dinner scenes (t’anks gods!!!). I was done and immediately looking for work, any work. Prior to filming I’d been working at Mrs. Robinson’s Restaurant at the corner of Riverside Drive and Congress Avenue in downtown Austin, for two years, paying for classes at St. Edward’s University, and doing well. Simultaneously, I’d been getting leads in all the plays at St Ed’s Mary Moody Northern Theater. After filming “Headcheese’ (Chainsaw ’74’s working title) for two-weeks, with little in the can, we shut down for a week. Then, we got a call that they found some money, filming was resuming. We all signed new contracts, but this time for ‘deferred money’. They’d kindly held my job at Mrs. R’s for the two weeks, but when we extended filming for another month, they had to hire someone to replace me. Drat. No job, no money.
Out of the blue, Daniel Pearl did me a solid. Our Chainsaw '74 cinematographer, Daniel, offered to shoot a portfolio for me with Daniel as the photographer, and Dottie Pearl assisting me with make-up and wardrobe. Both were full of great ideas, completely supportive, and very talented. Back in the day, with no internet, iPhones, computers, etc., we literally snail-mailed our pictures to casting agents and directors. When I think of the time-consuming hours of addressing, stamping, and trips to the post office, I get exhausted. Now, of course, you can scan and press Send.
Think about it.
The Good News: Everything finally worked out. As happens in life, things always change. For the past few years, our Chainsaw franchise has grown exponentially. I am pleased to report we have all grown close, appearing with my remaining cast mates to celebrate our 50th anniversary this year, since our filming and its release in 1974, appearing at various horror cons with my remaining cast members, together with our film crew members, Daniel Pearl, DP, JMichael McClary, ADP, and Ted Nicholaou, Sound Recordist. Fans love it and we love them!
Thanks to Kim Henkel, his son Ian Henkel, and Chase Anderson, we've been enjoying a real reunion to celebrate a little film we gave our hearts and souls to in the sweltering heat of July and August 1973, that went on to put Texas horror films on the map, a trailblazer, and lauded across the planet as a cult-classic in the horror genre. No sour grapes here, just great lessons learned, and thanks to all those who appreciate our work. We thank you.
The top right picture is from a print ad for Suzuki. Daniel had scored a local Suzuki commercial print ad shoot as DP in September 1973. When the director said they needed a girl who rode a motorcycle, Daniel did me yet another solid, he suggested me.🚀
Fifty years later, I’m still grateful.
xoxo,
Pammie 🪝💋

Airship /The White Diamond, 2004. Directed by Werner Herzog. Photo by Lena Herzog. Dorrington is an aeronaut. At Queen Mary, University of London, he is a lecturer in aerospace design. But what really keeps him busy is designing, building, and flying dirigibles-lighter-than-air vehicles or as he prefers to call them, airships. Why does he fly such unlikely contraptions? He says he does it in order to study the extraordinary biodiversity of the rainforest canopy, the tree top world that is brimming with otherwise inaccessible flora and fauna. In fact, Dorrington has invented and devoted himself to an entirely new field: dendronautics, from the Greek dendron (tree) and nautica (navigation). In 1993, during an expedition to Sumatra, a gust of wind caused one of Dorrington's airships to buck, throwing Dieter Plage, a celebrated German cinematographer of nature documentaries, overboard to his death. Haunted by this tragedy and possessed as ever by the dream of pure, silent, slow flight over the jungle treetops, Dorrington mounted a new expedition in 2004, this time to Guyana, in the company of the filmmaker Werner Herzog, whose film of the journey is called The White Diamond. In Guyana, Dorrington's dream ultimately came true, and the photographer Lena Herzog, the Russian-born wife of the filmmaker, responded to it with her still camera. As she watched Dorrington and his airship in action, she could not help thinking that he had invented dendronautics to satisfy his need to fly. "This is Graham's paradox," she said. "Graham has to fly. He must have always wanted to. But he also has a scientist's mind, which gives texture to his fantasies, comes up with a function for them, a fine aim. Even if it is an excuse in the beginning, he internalizes it and forces it into his scheme. So collecting life from the jungle's canopies is not only the airship's formal purpose it has now become an integral part of the airship's engineering. And this all makes Graham's dreams ever more beautiful." https://www.instagram.com/p/ClHJGt7tNtj/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

omg that halloween video was filmed over a (1!) year?! you already put so much work into making high quality videos, but that's some serious dedication! insane! rapid weight gain isn't usually what I go for but holy fuck the quality! do you have any video style inspirations? the lighting is just incredible, so moody/cozy, how long did it take to actually get the shots and then to edit? (the price for your patreon is an insane bargain either way) keep it up, dude!
Can I just say I really like that I get horny asks and art-influence asks? 🤣 Thank you for the questions! My style inspiration comes from cinema - no specific cinematographers that I can single out but the visual style I like is that soft indie film, sense of place type look. Films that have a strong, sometimes overwhelming, colour palette like Drive, La La Land, Enemy, Grand Budapest Hotel, The Fall, they really influence me. Films that use a really strong sense of colour and light to create a feeling. I really like cinema that looks like photography. Gregory Crewdson is one of my favourite photographers, his work is highly cinematic, he creates scenes that make you ask questions and I really like that cyclical influence of cinema on photography and vice versa which is really evident in his work. Annie Leibovitz is another huge fave. And look, let’s be real. I’m not thinking about these giants of the art world when I’m sitting down to plan my kinky little videos. But those are some of the influences that have gone into developing my style over the years.
And as for how long it takes, it varies a lot. Obviously the Halloween video took the longest, I don’t think I’ll ever top one year! 😆 But even the shots themselves took quite a while for that one, for a bunch of reasons. I was using my whole apartment so I was moving the lights and the set up a lot. I was trying to find angles where I looked skinny enough for the ‘before’ shots (not so easy anymore!!) and that took ages. There was make up I had to do for the stretch marks and padding for the end shots. In some shots I was so bloated I could hardly think straight and had to move carefully. There were also a lot of moving parts. I remember doing one shot where it was a slow pull back from the table overhead with the candles burning, water vapour for atmosphere, and as it was pulling back my phone had to come into shot and ring right as it became visible which I needed to trigger while I was doing the shot and keeping it steady… it was very complicated! 😆 So the Halloween video was multiple full days of shooting over the course of a year. But then something like my Fourth of July video was much quicker and easier to do. I just put on a tight flannel and went to town on a pie while moving the camera a few times for some variety in shots.
Editing used to take me much longer but I’m getting better at it now and I can usually get a whole video edited in half a day. Honestly the main thing I’m worried about is that as I’m getting bigger the filming is getting a little harder to do, especially the constant up and down of setting up the shot, getting in frame, checking the shot, etc. But I’ll just have to find a way to make it work because im having way too much fun. Thanks for your questions!

JAVI GUTIERREZ X OFC (It's Kelly ya'll, cuz birthday rights!)
WC: 2000
WARNINGS: LANGUAGE
N/A: For Kelly's birthday I gave her a coupon for a fic request and this is what she sent me-
Hazel my darling I have come up with the one-shot I would like to redeem with my birthday coupon (but I'm not trying to rush you, write at your pace 💙) "Javi G comes down to his olive trees, either to meet with the caretakers and check in or maybe he wants time away from the compound, and he saves a black cat that is stuck in one of the trees before bringing it back to his place and putting up lost cat posts online. But what he doesn't know is he saved a witch's (me) familiar so when she shows up to collect her wayward companion she gives him a luck amulet in return and unintentionally makes him fall for her."
Shockingly this has become a two-parter.
Happy Birthday, beloved Kelly Girl!!! @chaoticgeminate
Tumblr media
Javi loves the smell of the olive trees, he loves the quiet. It's a perfect place to go to work out some bit of plot that's eluding him. He can talk out loud and no one hears or cares, so he can try out dialogue for flow and realism.
He was out walking one day, doing just that. He recognized it as the golden hour when many cinematographers and photographers get their best outdoor shots. He looked around imagining a scene, maybe the moment in an adventure where the shift of light tells everyone that he is about to rise up and answer the call or maybe it's a rom-com and it's the moment when the much ado is done and they are about to go from idiots to lovers... And then he hears it. Messing up the moment, as it wasn't a sweet little mew, not even an adorable creaky kitten sound. It was a yowl.
Javi looked around, following the “alley cat in heat” sound, until it was above him. When he looked it was a large black cat with jewel-bright blue eyes, and a collar to match.
Well that helps, Javi thought seeing the collar.
Then it hissed at him.
That is less helpful, Javi thought with a sigh.
He pulled out his cell and tapped the call button for his arborist.
The arborist came with her ladder and a sack. Ready to climb up, she was stopped by Javi.
"I will do it."
"Well okay, jeffe!" She handed the sack over and wished him luck with a pat on the shoulder and a pitying look.
Javi climbed the ladder murmuring softly, hoping for a calming tone. The cat growled, ears plastered to its head.
"Come now, Belladona," He didn't know where the name came from it just came to him and seemed right considering the cat's ears perked suddenly.
The feline looked as surprised as Javi.
The intelligence in the animal's eyes caused Javi to make a huge misstep. He decided not to use the sack. He picked up the cat, murmuring to it calmly. He took a closer look at the cat's collar, it was encrusted with deep blue stones, not crystalline like sapphires, but an opaque stone with veins of white and yellow and flecks of black. While carrying the cat worked out at first, halfway down the ladder the cat panicked and climbed Javi like the tree it was just liberated from
Javis's yell caused every bird in the grove to take wing in their own panic.
Covered in bandages, Javi uploaded a cell phone photo of Belladona and typed up a found cat message. He posted it on various community apps. Looking across the living room to the softest chair, the cat sat looking as innocent as can be. Unnaturally innocent.  Not doing the aloof 'what did I do' cat face, it was sitting like a loaf with its front feet close together, eyes big and wide, ears forward and somehow wide too... like somehow, it was doing it on purpose. Then it fluttered its eyelashes...
No, Javi thought, shaking his head, it blinked three times in quick succession. And that is not the same thing at all.
He closed his laptop with a snap and looked at the cat.
"Hungry?"
Tumblr media
Kelly walked up the road of the little house she was staying in, calling her cat’s name while rattling a canaster of cat treats.
It was a sweet whitewashed stucco house with blue shutters. Inside, it was all glazed terracotta tile and exposed beams. It was a house swap affair because she could never have afforded it. But opportunity fell into her lap, apparently, there was a Mallorcan gentleman who has been itching to play “cowboy in America”, she tried to explain that Deleware was not really the place for cowboys per say…but he saw the photo of her little homestead and no amount of explaining would deter him… so here she was. Of course, she had to pack away all evidence that he was staying at a witch's mini farm. He was very excited to learn from Kelly's neighbor Melinda,  who she was paying to make sure the chickens, goats, and horses didn’t die she while away, teach her guest all the ins and outs of taking care of a farm, horseback riding, and real country line dancing. (“Luckily country music is pretty popular ‘round here. Don’t you worry, he’ll get to ride and line dance, and no one will look twice at his cowboy boots,” Melinda had assured her. Kelly, in turn, told her she owed Melinda big time, and she agreed.)
But no sooner than Kelly unpacked, her familiar took off to parts unknown. Truly unknown since she had hardly seen much more than the house and the route to it, before that menace took off.
Kelly rattled the treat container for looks mostly, as she called his name. (and cursed it - not officially) She stopped neighbors as they passed and was just starting to get really anxious when one of the neighbors, Marco, who she had spoken to a few homes back jogged over.
“Señora!”
Kelly turned and he held up his phone.
“I took a look on our neighborhood app, to see if anyone had found your gato, uh cat.”
“Thank you- um gracias- so much…” she rolled her eyes at herself, "sorry. Muchas gracias”
“Not to worry,” he said,” you lost a Black cat, yes?”
“Yes, he’s on there?”
“Looks like it, take a look.”
Marco handed her his phone, and there he was, the shithead.
All this time Kelly had held her necklace with a large lapis lazuli amulet, worrying it in her hand. Her familiar's collar carried the same stone. The witch had hoped this added connection would draw the two together, or at the very least bring good luck.
Of course, she supposed it had, between the person who found him and this kind neighbor, she was very lucky. Kelly thanked Marco ten times over as he gave her all the details and followed his advice to download the app, they also exchanged numbers.  Now she just needed to call this Javi guy and see about retrieving the cat.
She messaged Javi, and sent a photo of the pair of them so he knew she was legit, he sent a little video of the cat in question eating from a bowl.
KELLY: That is definitely my shithead cat. I hope he wasn’t too much trouble
JAVI: Well, we had a little trouble coming down from a tree, but since then no trouble at all. We will be here whenever you can come by
Kelly: I will be coming over directly, thank you SO MUCH. See you soon
Kelly popped up the map app and put in the address, it was just a short walk really. So she let the GPS lead the way to… a huge compound of an estate.
At the gate, she explained why she was there, and after a phone call up to the main house Kelly was allowed in.
Javi met her on the walk up, and immediately Kelly was mortified by the sight of his bandages. Nor was she ready for his warm brown eyes, his honeyed curls, the broadness of his chest. Unconsciously, she worried the stone of the amulet, thinking about how sweet his smile was as he greeted her. When they reached each other he leaned down and she got her first kiss on each cheek greeting. Kelly knew it was customary, but she couldn’t help warming at the soft press of his pillowed lips. She gave her head a little shake.
Javi chatted and asked questions about her visit to Mallorca as they strolled the length of the beautifully tiled loggia.
“I am so so sorry about all of this,” Kelly indicted his bandaged cheek, and arms.
Javi waved away the apology.
“Just in here, he has been very comfortable and apart from the unfortunate decent on the ladder- which was my fault entirely- he seems surprisingly at ease. I beg your pardon but I have been calling him Belladonna. I don’t really know why- it came to me and stuck. Do you know what I mean?” Javi explained as he opened the beautiful walnut doors.
“Belladonna?” Kelly asked sounding more incredulous than she meant to be.
“I’m sorry.”
“No no, Javi,” she put a hand on his arm, and then pulled it away, with a muttered apology.
“Please do not apologize,” he looked into her blue-gray eyes. Kelly's thumb continued to massage the stone in her hand.
“I’m not offended or anything! Oh no, on the contrary, I am just- his name is Nightshade!”
“I don’t under-”
“Belladonna is in the nightshade family- it’s also known as Deadly Nightshade!”
“OH!” Javi smiled, and the sun must have come from behind the one cloud in the sky, then he laughed thinking of the attack on the ladder “spooky! And appropriate!”
Kelly laughed, and still, she gazed at this man, until a meow made her jump and broke the spell.
“Ah, here you are you, little shithead,” Kelly said with affection.
Nightshade purred, though when he opened his eyes his expression was nothing short of haughty.
“Well, sir, you need to come back with me- you can’t adopt yourself into this man’s home!” Kelly gave him a stern look that Javi did not see.
Nightshade hopped off of the tufted ottoman leisurely, and began wrapping himself around his witch's legs, and then figure-eighting around her and Javi. Kelly looked down at him in surprise and picked him up.
“He likes you,” she said shyly.
Javi petted the cat's head, smiling at Kelly.
“Thank you for everything, Javi”, she continued, and as she was about to turn to go, her familiar scrambled out of Kelly's arms, causing her to drop the amulet, she was so flustered the witch didn't realize it and it went unnoticed.
Kelly gave the cat a look that put a stop to his shenanigans and he came to her. Javi was none the wiser and invited her to share a meal.
“We really should be going, but thank you Javi. Perhaps another time,” she said hopefully.
“Another time, yes. For sure,” he smiled and Kelly wondered how on earth anyone was allowed to be so cute.
He walked, arms swinging casually back to the gates and reminded her of the raincheck on dinner, and Kelly waved with a bright smile. Then she turned she looked down at Nightshade-
“What were you thinking?”
I was thinking I wanted to climb an olive tree and I got stuck. Down is much harder than up!
“You know what I mean,” Kelly shook her head. “No matchmaking, Yente!”
Nightshade gave a look with all the innocence of a newborn kitten.
I don't know what you mean
Tumblr media
Javi made his way back up the drive and reentered the room where he had kept Nightshade, thinking about the events of the day. He couldn't help being disappointed by not having the lovely woman join him for dinner, though he could imagine it had been a long and stressful day for her. He would not take it personally. Suddenly he noticed something just peeking out from under the ottoman. He picked up a beautiful blue oval stone on its long silver chain.
It was warm and inviting in his hand. Javi had not seen Kelly with a necklace… so he put it on for safe keeping, it tucked nicely inside his shirt and pressed comfortingly in the hollow of his chest. As his thoughts lingered on the lovely blonde, suddenly he blushed, and looked wistfully at the door, as if willing her to walk back though it.

Happy Birthday once again my good & dear friend. I'm love u. smorches
Tumblr media
Also I already asked about this in discord BUT for the sake of blogging: What are the vamp mafia's hobbies/what they like to do in their free time? And also what are their Darkest Dungeon character parallels (since you've dragged me into playing it & I can feel it absorbing into my bones)
THANK YOU MY LOVE AND YOU'RE WELCOME FOR THE DARKEST DUNGEON BRAINROT <3
obviously i'm not gonna answer for every member cuz that would get really long and my braincells are also in the negatives buuuuut:
reuben is a cellist, a ballet dancer, and a drag queen (and he loves the ballroom scene)
feliks plays the bassoon and likes to watch and discuss films
i feel like finley ends up learning to crochet, and he also is a photographer/amateur cinematographer
ibán likes going on long walks (at his own pace, considering his bad leg). he likes Nature ™️, but he doesn't like Hiking ™️. he'd find birdwatching pretty fun too
in terms of darkest dungeon characters?
reuben is a jester, hands down. you see the vision. he has to be.
feliks gives me vibes of the thrall modded class. he hits hard and he tanks hard. if it has to be canon classes, leper for that.
tomasso would be either a jester or a highwayman, probably the latter.
louisa gives me plague doctor vibes but i'd have to check with @oops-i-accidentally
