Basic Pokémon Worldbuilding Headcanons
Decided to write down my base worldbuilding assumptions about the Pokémon World, in case anyone else would like to share them;
Pokemon types are not fully a human-made classification system, but rather a metaphysical property of a Pokémon’s aura, the same aura that Lucario and many other Pokémon manipulate; the ‘frequency’ of their type is unique to them, and the combination of types makes its own unique ‘frequency’, much like coordinates on a chart with 18 different axiis on both sides.  This means that classification was first made and named by psychic humans who could sense them, until humans developed machinery for proper classification. The formal classification of a type is conditional on being detectable by modern technology, which is why the Fairy type remained unclassified for years, as it was very similar to Normal type in makeup.
This energy is also how Pokémon can be contained in Pokeballs and transferred electronically; Pokemon are naturally capable of converting from energy to mass and back again, though the exact mechanics of this transformation only became known in the 90’s as advances in science allowed the Pokémon Storage System to come into existence.
Psychic humans, of course, as we know, exist. Up to 5-10% of the population is some form of psychic, the extra 5% having psychic potential of some manner that, while not offering powers of any kind, makes them extra vulnerable to psychic effects or attacks.
This fact mixes explicit canon with my own headcanons; evolution for Pokémon is a process entirely separate to aging or the biological meaning of evolution in our world. Pokémon evolve for a variety of factors that are often connected but not always related to aging; if their territory is suited for them and would not support their larger evolution, many Pokémon simply choose not to evolve, leading to strange (for humans) sights like encountering elderly Treecko. As Grovyle are significantly larger than their prevolution, the Treecko would have had to leave his family behind to seek new territory, so it simply never did. Evolution is not the process of aging for Pokémon, though it’s often intimately connected with it, most Pokémon are fully capable of reaching maturity and breeding prior to their final evolution, so many simply choose not to do so for their own reasons.
The act of evolution consumes a large amount of energy in a short period of time; this is the cause of the glowing light seen in the anime and some games, while others feature large bursts of swirling wind, the method of energy dispersal can vary, but all evolution causes some form of sudden energy discharge.
The process that is described in our world as natural evolution, and this is explicitly canon, does occur to Pokémon, though often it can be much more rapid than in our world. For example, and this is implicitly (though not explicitly) canon, Electrode and Voltorb’s species was originally a species of Apricorn mimics; this is implied by the Temple of Sinnoh’s statue of the original Lord Electrode, which has no dividing line between the upper and lower halves. As Pokeballs came into existence, they pivoted to mimicking them instead.
Pokémon breeding is more complicated than canon presents, obviously, but the base premises the game uses, of “Egg Groups”, is fundamentally still correct. Pokémon reproduce in different ways based on their species, but all Pokémon capable of breeding are in some form capable of laying eggs, often with the more mammalian Pokémon simply being ovovivaparous, giving live birth to their young, but still having eggs inside their bodies rather than placentas.  Under stress or other conditions that make it more favorable, often these Pokémon can choose to lay their eggs rather than develop them internally. Despite most technically being capable of doing so, most Pokémon simply do not choose to breed outside their species, and in fact, interbreeding between species in the wild is a likely sign of a disturbed ecosystem.  Obvious incompatibilities due to size can be overcome through artificial insemination, and Pokémon breeders often use these technologies to help create more effective battlers. As in canon, male Pokémon pass on very little to their offspring. To elaborate on that fact, male Pokémon pass on their aura to their child more than genes, and this leads to the influence of the father on a Pokémon expressing themselves subtly, often offering the capabilities to learn moves that may not be natural to their offspring. Very occasionally the father’s genes will express themselves in minor physical differences to an average member of the species, but this is very rare and usually very subtle.
Pokémon that are not biological in nature and/or in the No Eggs Discovered egg group tend to reproduce in their own unique ways, but due to unknown reasons, speculated upon wildly by scientists, usually still produce some form of egg in the process of reproduction.  For example; Magnemite and its family reproduce by two or more Magnemite collecting magnetic minerals together into a roughly egg-shaped ball, which eventually solidifies into a Magnemite egg. This type of reproduction is common to most Pokémon in the Mineral egg group. Most Ghost types are capable of natural reproduction, despite their appearances, and simply collect energy together during reproduction that coalesces into an egg once a male Pokémon has provided their aura.

Breeding Safely: Swoobat
Tumblr media
Swoobat are known to be romantics, so might as well start with them.
Swoobat are polygamous, and 1 male will often mate with 3 to 4 females, with the entire colony helping to care for the gravid females and raise their young. While they can be completely fine with just one mate, Swoobat are very social in general and do better in groups, so it is recommended you have at least 2 other pokemon on your team, even if you don't plan to breed them or they don't see them as a potential mate.
Swoobat don't have a breeding season in the traditional sense, but ovulation occurs in females around once a month, and this is where most of mating happens, so it's good to know where your female Swoobat is at in her cycle.
At the start of courting, male Swoobat will emot the ultrasonic waves they're so famous for. These waves aren't loud or painful like the other kinds of waves they use, and it is actually quite peaceful.
Tumblr media
If the female likes the male's ultrasonic waves, she will emit waves of the same frequency at him before stamping noses together, then mating. After 1 to 2 days, when it's time to lay her eggs, the female Swoobat will go to a nesting area in their homes with other Swoobat mothers and lay her eggs with the support of her colony mates.
Laying eggs can be very stressful for first-time mothers, especially tamed Swoobat, who don't often have the support of their entire colony. To make your Swoobat feel the most comfortable, make a bedding arrangement using pillows, blankets, and other soft materials in a dark and closed off area, like a closet if you don't have a nursery. If you have another Swoobat, it's recommended to bring them in too if you think they can handle it, since to Swoobat will be able to emit waves thst can calm the mother down and ease the pain. The Swoobat will usually lay 1 to 2 eggs at a time in a process that can take up to 24 hours.
Obviously, the eggs should be handled with care. While the mother Swoobat can keep the eggs warm herself, you can put them in incubators if you feel the need to. Also, here's a picture of what the eggs will look like. It's around 5 inches tall and 6 inches tall.
Tumblr media
The eggs will hatch around a week after they're laid, and the young Woobat will be covered in a very soft light grey down but will grow into their fur around 12 hours after hatching. The mother will feed them milk for around 2 weeks until they can eat solid food. During this period, make sure you feed them a lot of protein-rich foods, like fatty bugs and fruits.
Young Woobat will start attempting to fly at around a week old, where they might stumble a lot. Make sure you provide a safe area where they can practice, like hopping off a shelf where you can catch them, or if they fall, there's something soft to help break their fall.
At around 3 weeks old is when a baby Woobat will start learning how to battle and use its moves with the help of its parents. While you can't really help much with this, you can encourage them. At this point, you are able to take your Woobat out to do early battles.
Tumblr media
Please remember: don't force your pokemon to breed if they don't want to! Consent is very important, even with pokemon!

hi just found your blog and it's great seeing a pokebiologist recording their studies and providing fun facts for everyone to access! i don't know if you've gotten this question before, but i've always wondered: have their been studies on how items affect what pokemon hatch when breeding? for example, what is it with incense items that makes 'baby' pokemon hatch instead of what we'd usually see (ex. azurill instead of marill)?
Thank you for that Anon! I always find it important to share information to others, especially when Pokemon partners is something almost everybody has.
Pokemon and Insence Breeding
(Tldr at the end)
There have been some studies on it, and here's the best way I can describe it. Think of it as how smoking while pregnant can affect the baby in the womb. Let's use Roserade as an example. If you give a (female) Roserade a rose incense and breed it with a pokemon of the same egg group (or Ditto), the Pokenon coming out will be a Budew instead of a Roselia. It's also possible for Budew to appear in the wild since they can just conceive in a rosebush, which would have the same smell. But anyways, the reason the species changes is because Pokemon have a lot more infinity energy inside of their eggs; the same infinity energy that appears when a pokemon evolves. This kind of evolution infinity energy is a lot more sensitive to the changes in the environment, which can even make the Pokemon in the egg change species! It's also the reason why, in most cases, when a Pokemon hatches, they appear to be evolving into the egg instead of coming out of it.
Tumblr media
Tldr: Pokemon egg is filled with infinity energy, and the egg is basically an incubator. The infinity energy is subject to change while still forming, and the smell/smoke/incense can affect that. Infinity energy will change, resulting in a new pokemon.

Pokemon Fun Facts!
Given how protective Goodra can be of the little collections of Pokemon they usually end up taking care of, it often surprises people to learn that they are not doting parents like many ‘Mons!
A Goodra will lay a clutch of eggs in a hole in the ground, cover them over- they prefer clay-ey soil for this- and then hang around the area, shooing off anyone who comes sniffing, until the eggs hatch. Once the baby Goomy emerge, the adult checks the area for suitable food and moisture levels, moves the babies elsewhere if necessary, and then… leaves!
It seems Goodra prefer to be the only Goodra in the area, and therefore have no particular interest in actively raising their own potential future competitors. Plus, Goomy are pretty much self-reliant straight out of the egg! This is, to my mind, one of the clearest behavioural indicators that they really are Dragon types!

Noodle here!
And y’know… I’ve been thinking about my personal philosophy behind writing for Volo a bit since at times he seems so like… Different, you know? And I realize it’s because I write him as “just some guy” first and foremost like. Yes he has all of these background underhanded dealings and web of lies under the surface, but while he may lie, he isn’t exactly… Intentionally malicious with it? Like he could be? (Or kinda was in canon even oop) Key word “intentionally”. Volo absolutely has moments of true malice here and there but it’s afterthought, not main goal, you know??
FS!Volo is just a guy who was backed into a corner with no perceived way out and made bad and regrettable decisions. And he knows he fucked up too, ironically enough. Especially now that what he lacked so severely before was practically gifted to him in the form of Euphorbia (Arceus’ fav girl for those stumbling upon my ramblings uwu). Truthfully, this dude is just a shy guy struggling with his moral compass and obligations. He’s just a goofy fella who does try to do good by world, even if his world is solely (at the moment) Euphorbia.
If this makes any sense HSBDSJJSJFN maybe I too should post a snippet or two of him in action… I don’t think I have on here yet.

This "breed" of Pikachu is no longer recognized by most Pokémon clubs, leagues, and breeders. If you see one offered for sale or trade, please alert your local authorities.
While it is very cute, such Pikachu have trouble with communication (due to the unusually small electric organs), teeth issues (because to the round face), balance issues (caused by the short limbs), and breathing difficulty (small nose).
If you are interested in rounder electric rodents, look into getting a Morpeko, Dedenne, or Togedemaru, since they are healthier Pokémon.

I think i wanna retract my headcanon that Laventon failed his pokemon breeding course because hes a prude and it embarrassed him. No, I think it infuriated him over how fucking confusing it could get and how fucked up some teachings were. While incense breeding is yet to be a thing, Ditto breeding IS a thing. A REALLY BIG thing. Just a quick way to get new livestock to sell, breed some more, and use as food. Basically a mill, if you really think about it. Laventon spent an entire two fucking months learning only about Ditto breeding and he quickly learned the horrific damage mass breeding a Ditto-decendant can actually cause to its bloodline.
You ask him about this, and he'll go on a whole thing about how the Kantonian settlers fucked up the Pichu line when they introduced them to Hoenn. All it took was breeding another imported Ditto with a Ditto-decendant Raichu resulting in a whole litter of fucked up Pichu. Their ability to conduct and control electricity was way worse than the standard Pichu and upon evolving, it didn't improve. As Pikachu, theyre smaller than their Kantonian ancestors. A closer look, it seems their electricity sacs and tails are not able to withstand as much electricity as other Pikachu can. Some have even shown signs of too brittle tail bones, meaning they may never be able to learn iron tail. As Raichu, its basically the same— for those who were able to even evolve that is. But regardless, they're continuously bred with other Ditto-bred Raichu or Pikachu or other Ditto because Pikachu and Raichu meat are not only a Kantonian delicacy, but their pelt are perfect heat insulators which would bring a lot of monetary means to the young ports of Hoenn. And this is all within 100 years. And its pisses Laventon off after hearing how many other similar incidents have happened and still continue to happen! Such as the current trend in Kalos of Ditto breeding Furfrou for a newer breed of "designer" Furfrou, only resulting in various health concerns for the pups that are not dealt with due to the lack of pokemon medical practitioners.
Or in Galar where Mudsdale are being mass bred with Ditto in order to keep up with the lack of food in many locations(Mudbray meat being too tough). And it often resulted in sick meat, Laventon having been a victim of such ordeals. He just had a sour stomach and a fever for a couple weeks, but regardless it brought his attention to what was going on really. And he QUICKLY stopped buying from shops that mass bred and forcefully trained for Mudsdale.
He doesn't like Pokémon breeding due to how fucked up it is in his time. There are no regulations yet. The discovery of Ditto brought a lot of confusion and scientific wonder but was quickly overshadowed by the fact of how easy it was to get offspring from a certain pokemon from just this single blob.

This glorious creature is a shiny Riolu. His name is Aureus. This is one of his only baby pictures as the rotom phone it was in was later devoured by a dondozo. Aureus is all grown now and is still a troublemaker. Some shinies have trouble surviving in the wild, and even those who are accepted by their species are targeted by poachers and sold to the highest bidder. Those who escape are usually found in terrible condition and are traumatized. No matter how much you want a shiny pokemon, please never buy one. This only supports poaching and pokemon mills. No shiny is worth that level of suffering. Half the time it's a scam and they'll only take your hard earned money
There are lots of shiny rescues who work with trainers to find a pokemon perfect for them. There are also responsible breeders who work with species endagered by poaching.

How do, say, Rufflet or Impidimp hatch in the wild without any Ditto nearby?
Much like the whole “Nidorina and Nidoqueen can’t reproduce” thing, the “all-male species can only produce offspring of their species when paired with Ditto” thing is completely false. When Pokémon of two different species reproduce, the resulting offspring can belong to either parent’s evolutionary line.
There is one caveat though: the parents need to have similar body types, otherwise the offspring will only be of the mother’s evolutionary line. For example, Braviary X Mandibuzz can produce both Rufflet and Vullaby eggs, but Tauros X Ninetales will only produce Vulpix since Tauros and Ninetales, despite being in the same Egg Group, have vastly different body types.

so i made pokemon teams for a3 like 2 years ago and then i suddenly stopped posting them. tbh i started making teams for ace attorney around the time the great ace attorney released (never ended up posting those) and i burnt out
anyway, i hope to get to posting again this summer and to start i just remembered an addition to chikage’s team with the introduction of gen 9
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i think i would probably toss out magnezone from chikage’s team to fit scovillain. i would imagine that it would be a chance of fate for chikage to have an encounter with a pokemon to meet his preferred spice levels and flavor.
scovillian learns a move called “spicy extract” so i dont imagine chikage having to behead this pokemon to add to his meals.

i leave for a day or two and come home to the most chaos, like the tag of u begging ppl not to send u asks about piss really sums everything up here
the imagery of satya spraying cole with febreeze like hes a cat is quite fun however
buttttttt- i am here to combat the chaos with some wholesomeness
so post recall- i like to think the heroes who do return end up developing different rituals with each other
like i always adore the idea of hana investing her time in the older heroes to try and learn as much as she can. like doing target training with hanzo and respectively talking in their own native tongues. she still teases him for whatever social mess he has gotten himself into that week of course, she is mischievous by nature but holds a huge deal of respect for him too!!! she would invest a lot of time earning his respect and company and i think she would be very interested in the dragons themselves!!
i could imagine her comparing the dragons to her meka, (because she would carry that level fondness and admiration for it!!!) shes like oh theyre just like tokki!! and hanzo just deadpans like respectfully your technological contraption is not way comparable to the divinity and history held by the dragons
whilst the dragons themselves i think they would simply be amused, like hanzo desperately trying to defend their honour and they r like no no, technically she has a point, they would totally have a soft spot for her
i also think hanzo would eventually carry a similar fondness for her too!!! like the different perspective that hana can give! he knows the life they live can be tough and unforgiving and yet she still takes the next day in her stride. some part of it probably worries him as it’s an uncomfortable reminder to how playful kiriko and genji were when they were all younger and how he couldnt of stopped what had happened to them but he never /ever/ would doubt her capability. he’s not that kinda person!
it would totally help loosen him up too, like i could see him only taking part in like self enjoyment very briefly thinking it’s frivolous and time could be spent elsewhere but one night when they had originally scheduled training but maybe something comes up (honestly with all the trans headcannons the idea of hana dealing with menstrual stuff and hanzo being like oh shit yeah lets change plans is a big slay actually.)
so they sneak off of base, this is how hana learns how sneaky he can truly be and he teaches her a thing or too, and head into more central gibratlar and they go find a late night food place/arcade (hana would obviously know the best spots) and they eat the like best worst takeaway food and play games in a quiet arcade and its our favourite causal intimacy (who cheered!!! and all platonic ofc if that was not clear)
but it’s a very fond memory and hanzo is like okay maybe sometimes he does need enrichment outside of his enclosure u know haha
anyways !! short rambles but theyre so <333
- sabs !
See, thats the thing bout this blog. You’ll never know what you’re gonna get. And I think that’s kinda beautiful 🥹
BUT YEAHHH!!!! I wholly agree and enjoy the idea of all the characters interacting on day to day basis. Makes me happy. They all do their part and take turns with the grocery runs, kitchen duty, and tending to the community garden. One big misfit family :>
Hana does contribute when she’s not in her room streaming. As for the older heroes, she definitively respects a certain few like Ana and Rein haha.
With Hanzo, I think their relationship was actually pretty rocky at the start. They def butted heads a lot bc both are such leader types. Hana thought he was way too old-fashioned and overbearing while he thought she was too naive and reckless. I do love the voiceline of her putting Hanzo in his place the most.
But over time, seeing the other sides of the other helped their assumptions change. Hana begins to appreciate Hanzo’s tactical plans because it always gives her an easy escape route whenever she gets overwhelmed by enemies. He admires her vital spirit and always willing to sacrifice her mech for the team. Eventually it turns into Hanzo giving her shooting tips at the training range and Hana challenging him to spicy noodle eating competitions. I hc Hanzo is a polygot and knows Korean and Mandarin (learned it for business). Hanzo whips it out whenever he wants to motivate her or when she’s feeling homesick and can’t call her dad. Hana on the other hand can sense when he is about to ruminate and drags him to one of her streams. He backseats game the whole time, but he is just so deadpan funny, the chat adores him so she lets it slide. She even has a Hanzo unimpressed emote.
Oh yes, Hana absolutely is interested in the dragons. While she thinks the kitsune is Cute, the dragons are just way Cooler. Imagine Hanzo trying to explain all the grueling hours of training he did in order to harness the dragon’s power and control them at will, while they are just nuzzling up to a giggly Hana. He sighs. I can definitely see the dragons sunbathing on top of Tokki on a nice day 😂😂😂
Once there is that mutual respect, Hanzo wouldn’t dare to think she is in incapable at anything. Like you said, he would often be reminded of Genji’s and Kiriko’s youthfulness, so the Older Brother comes out occasionally. But she is different to them because she is so headstrong and knows who she is fighting for. And Hana always comes to him when she wants a serious, no bullshit answer because others tend to walk on eggshells with her due to her celebrity status. She counts on him to be the realist to her idealism.
YEAHHHHH, Hanzo knows what’s up and they sneak off on a hovercycle that he hotwires. Hana comments saying she didn’t know he knew how to ride one of these. While Hanzo just smirks, he has many secrets that only few are worthy of being privy to.
They eat and play at the arcade, casual platonic friendship at it’s best!!! Hana beats his ass at all the games, but he is a worthy opponent. Hanzo def is an expert at those crane games tho, and gets her the pinkest plush they have. Hana gets him those tacky orange sunglasses. It’s a warm pleasant memory for the both of them.
Also I 100% know this was one of their interactions:
Hana: are you homophobic
Hanzo: im gay…????
Hana: HES DODGING THE QUESTION

I know the remakes removed or altered the dialogue about the new-ness of Pokémon laying eggs, for obvious reasons, but I still love the idea of Professor Elm as a Pokémon Professor focused on Pokémon breeding. Because, well, that’s an important aspect of Pokémon and taking care of them. Plus, he’s such a pathetic willowy wisp of a man that I can’t help but find the idea of him being a mom to all sorts of Pokémon adorable and hilarious.

Fun fact, the term “Shiny Pokemon” is entirely colloquial and doesn’t really exist in research. Of course it’s reference and widely used but “Shiny-ness” is actually a widespread set of traits that isn’t as singular as people think. Take a shiny Charizard for example, it’s black right? Except not always, some shiny Charizards are purple, some are orange spotted with red, some even have blue flames without megastones being involved.
Shiny refers mostly to pokemon that fall outside of the typical species expression and can be used to describe a variety of different morphs. They’re typically the result of a gene mutation and common traits like leucism, melaninsm and albinism all fall under the definition of Shiny.

Pokemon Breeds: Dreamy Plush
Dreamy Plush is the name for a Stufful/Beware with a Musharna father.
(Sketches I did of them)
Stufful
Tumblr media
Dreamy Plush Stufful are a lot more calm than purebred Stufful, though they still don't like being touched, and will give plenty of warnings before attacking. They only let trusted friends or trainers touch them, and they have been stated to enjoy cuddling every once-in-a-while.
Because of their eyes, a lot of people find then creepy, which has led many people to stop breeding them. But, they are becoming more popular as a lot of people find their flower designs very cute and elegant.
Tumblr media
Like their pre-evolution, Dreamy Plush Beware are more calm than purebred Beware. But still being Beware, they can be quite dangerous, and you shouldn't let them hug you. They sleep a lot more than regular Beware, but don't collect dreams like Musharna, as they don't have the psychic typing. Instead, they'll take multiple naps throughout the day and then get up to hunt and do their daily stuff when awake.

7, 10, 18, 25 for the ask game!
Do all Pokémon come from eggs?
Haha well if you’re asking if normal reproductive activity- y’know, sex!- will always result in eggs, then yes! I’m no genetics expert, but it’s something to do with the way Pokemon will breed even with very different species if they share an egg group; it’s a lot easier when you’re dealing with potential conflicts to encase your embryo in a shell and let it do most of its developing somewhere the mother’s systems can’t constantly interfere with it!
That said, although all (barring a few notable exceptions!) Pokemon can produce eggs, not all Pokemon come from eggs, if you get me! Some Ghost types are confirmed to occasionally develop from humans who have passed away, and some Grass Pokemon can bud off babies if they care to! Tales of Pokemon who develop from certain items or natural features being somehow animated are less well verified though!
Can legendaries be caught?
Ohhh man that’s a bag of worms you’ve opened! There’s been a lot of talk about various kids catching various forces of nature, and let me tell you even for someone as nosy as me it’s really hard to tell if they’re caught or they’re ‘caught’ or they’re just kind of hanging out, if that makes any sense at all!
I’ve never been lucky enough to meet any Legendaries to ask them about it either! Or any of the kids involved. So I just watch the news and poke around on the internet about it sometimes! Annoys me I can’t give you a proper answer to this one!
((OOC: Legendaries can be caught, but let’s be real if they let you catch them they’ve already decided to hang out with you and the Pokeball is just for convenience. And isn’t going to hold them if they want out, either.
The kids Gingko’s talking about are my various game PCs, but I haven’t entirely decided who is and isn’t canon to this particular ‘verse yet. Asking about them is fair game, though Gingko probably won’t know very much!)
Can shiny Pokémon pass down the trait to offspring?
The answer to this one pisses off annoys the shiny mill breeders a lot, because it’s ‘sometimes, but not always, and not often’! It depends on what kind of genetic mutation is causing the shiny trait, and how it’s expressed! And often even if it does pass down it’ll pass down ‘wrong’ in some way- patchy or too pale or too dark! Can even depend on the sire used! There’s a market for weird shinies, of course, but it’s not like you can produce them consistently, and for people who breed Pokemon purely for the monetary value that’s a pain in the ass behind!
((OOC: Pokemon can express genetic mutations like albinism, leucism etc that don’t match up to their canon shinies too, but they’re even rarer than normal shinies))
What's a headcanon or lore drop you've desperately wanted to talk about but haven't gotten the chance to?
Hoho, well, nobody’s asked me about my Pokemon yet, have they? I’ve got a full team of six I take on adventures, and a few more that just hang out with me here at the Sanctuary! I think it’d be fun if people tried to guess what I’ve got, maybe!
