Can you picture an armadillo the size of a refrigerator? Although today’s little armadillos aren’t native to Florida, our humble peninsula *did* have giant 600+ pound armadillos during the Pleistocene. 🦣 Other mammals that inhabited Florida during the Pleistocene (which was 2 million-10,000 years ago) were mastodons, mammoths, 13-foot tall sloths, big camels, horses, bears, and saber-tooth cats. 🦣 The peninsula of Florida was also double in size during some of that time, extending far into what is now ocean.
