GUIDE TO LOLITA VS HIME GYARU

I’m going to break down the differences of Sweet+Old school Lolita and Hime Gyaru for any J-fashion enthusiasts In this post.

At first glance these styles can look very similar with the joint goal of looking like a feminine “aristo doll” in rebellion of social norms of conformity when it comes to getting dressed but appearance wise they are different.

( I’m only going to talk about the visual differences here but there are other great sources for history )

Silhouette —

Lolita: What makes Lolita fashion so recognisable is the cupcake silhouette of the petticoat underneath the skirt, how the skirt has lots of volume at the top and stops 1/3 down leaving the the rest of the skirt’s curve to slow down.

Hime Gyaru: Hime Gyaru dresses and blouses do not have petticoats or if they do they are thin and flat. Because of the babydoll style of the dresses they have a more loose fit.

Colours —

Lolita: In Sweet styles the colour palette of most coords are pastels with pink, blue, yellow, purple and some green, Old school has more bold colours with darker reds, greens, pinks, whites, blacks and blues but with white accents with lace.

Hime Gyaru: Colour palettes are relatively the same for every Hime Gyaru coord with cold pinks and white with occasional accents of black.

Modesty—

Lolita: Most Lolitas wear a blouse underneath their dresses but in summertime some Lolitas wear their dresses with out a blouse. Their skirts tend to be above knee height and will wear knee or thigh high socks or patterned tights.

Hime Gyaru: Hime Gyaru tends to show more of the shoulders because of low necklines. The skirt normally reaches its end before the end of the hand and socks normally aren’t prevalent in Hime Gyaru fashion.

Prints —

Lolita: With Sweet Lolita prints you can find florals, animals, food, drinks and sometimes buildings. With Old school you can find prints like plaid and tartan. It is important to note that it’s mainly split down the middle with Lolita dresses having prints or being plain.

Hime Gyaru: Almost every Hime Gyaru dress will have a floral print ( this being roses ).

Misc —

Lolita: While some Lolita’s wear colourful wigs it isn’t needed for a Lolita coord. Makeup can vary from rather subtle to pink blush and gloss.

Hime Gyaru: Hime Gyaru is known for their dirty blonde Goldilocks wigs. Will commonly sport a fake tan although it may not be as dark as other Gyaru sub styles. Lipstick and blush is a light cold pink and they wear large false eyelashes. Long acrylic nails are a must.

Please note that there are exceptions to all of these and there are no rules to these styles and the most important thing is having fun! :))

I honestly think we should make wearing pettiless dresses, maid outfits, amazon dresses, animal ears, cosplay aspects, etc and other "ita"/costumey things its own lolita sub style, like the main issue I've seen other lolitas having with it is that they don't want to be associated with it under the lolita name so I think if we made it its own thing that could make everyone happy!! Call it ota lolita or ita lolita or something. I think it's a pretty fun style on its own and anyway most people who dress like that are beginners trying their hardest who will have a much more developed style in a few years (if that's what they want), plus it would be nice to have a style of lolita that takes the pressure off (like how himekaji is a more relaxed version of hime gyaru)

I mean we kinda did the same thing with ero lolita and guro lolita already, those styles use things that are generally considered bad to involve in your coords but they work in the right substyle

what do you think for lizzie hearts gyaru/fashion. i think hime gyaru with gothic elements, or maybe just classic fantasy type lolita but more sophisticated. and bunny blanc is def sweet lolita and what do you think for kitty

HMM yes i think hime fits well for lizzie!! but i also thought of onee for her:

certain parts of her outfit (mostly her dress & shoes) remind me a lot of onee coords, even ones I wear myself ^^ I also think the "stylish older sister" theme fits well with her future queen theme!

for kitty, I think agejo would be most fitting! I thought maybe with a match up of colors, but just keeping it pink in typical agejo sense wouldn't look bad either!

IM SO SO SO EXCITED!!! I was gifted a super cute dress, bags, and heels for my birthday! It’s my first time owning any actual Gyaru brand clothes (which I usually don’t worry about since my style isn’t really just one specific substyle, also I’m usually very inspired by old school jfashion which is easier to replicate on a budget). The dress and shoes are from the gorgeous brand Jesus Diamante which is known as a popular/go to Hime Gyaru brand, it’s like the complementary big sister to brands like La Parfait or Tralala. It makes me super happy bc hime/himekaji (also anything you’d find in a Koakuma Ageha magazine) is part of what got me into Gyaru and even EGL fashion, and I can’t wait to put together a coord that’ll do absolute justice to the beauty and frills of these pieces!!
