The Ballroom at Belvoir. This weekend, whilst her doors were shuttered, I was kindly invited to a private tour of @belvoircastle in preparation for her reopening to visitors on March 12th. It felt quite surreal to visit this historic Castle after seeing its resplendent interiors on The Crown and The Young Victoria, and I can’t wait to share more photographs from my visit. On a separate point, it was refreshing to note the warmth and diversity of the team at Belvoir. Belvoir want to share the history and beauty of The Castle with everyone, and want every visitor to feel welcome. #KnightsTemplar or simply the #Templars, were a Catholic military order⚔️ founded in 1119, headquartered on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. They also managed a large economic infrastructure throughout #Christendom, developing innovative financial techniques that were an early form of banking🏦. They lent money to Kings & Nobility, which became in the end their downfall. Since the Templars🛡️ were closely tied to the #Crusades; when the #HolyLand was lost, support for the order faded. Rumours about the Templars' secret initiation ceremony created distrust, and King Philip IV of France – deeply in debt to the Templar order – took advantage of this distrust to destroy them and erase his debt💰. In 1307, he had many of the order's members in France arrested, tortured into giving false confessions, and burned at the stake🔥. Pope Clement V disbanded the order in 1312 under pressure from King Philip👑. Following the dissolution of the Knights Templar, the #OrderOfChrist was erected in 1319 under the protection of the Portuguese King Denis. He was grateful for their aid during the Reconquista against the Moors and in the reconstruction of Portugal after the wars. Denis negotiated⚖️ with Pope Clement's successor John XXII for recognition of the new order and its right to inherit Templar assets and property🗝️. This was granted in the papal bull Ad ea ex quibus of 14 March 1319. King Denis absorbed many of the ex Knights Templar into his ranks, along with Knights Templar properties in Portugal. Its headquarters🏰 became the #ConventOfChrist in #Tomar, a former #KnightsTemplarCastle. In 1581, after a succession crisis, the Portuguese Nobility🇵🇹 gathered in the Convent of Christ in Tomar and officially recognised Philip II of Spain🇪🇦 (Philip I of Portugal) as King.
