So we’re getting Eli on Casualty!!!!! It looks like a one-off, but nonetheless I’m thrilled. (I didn’t let myself quite believe it until now even though we saw him in the trailer, lmao. I didn’t want to believe it because I would’ve been distraught if I thought I was getting more Eli and then Davood Ghadami was somehow playing a different character or something.)

My favourite autistic-coded surgeon is coming back to meee!! <3 I love Eli so, so much and I’ve wanted him on Casualty for months. I am a bit sad he didn’t cross over sooner though, so he could have a scene with Marty (Davood and Shaheen played brothers on Eastenders).

I hope Eli gets scenes with Dylan. I would LOVE to see these two wonderful autistic doctors become friends.

i'm extremely upset about what the shortland street writers have done to leanne and rosalyn.

ros cheating on leanne is antithetical to her character; besides which, they were madly, head over heels in love. and now, apparently, the same woman who told leanne she'd love her until her dying day, who proposed to her in front of everyone she cares about, was having an affair only months later? really???

it really hurts me that rosalyn is being treated this way, because i love her so much. she's honestly one of my most favourite sapphic characters that i've ever come across, and they're doing her such a disservice by making her out to be the kind of person that would do this.

what also bothers me is the way this parallels what the holby writers did to bernie and serena. serena, another character i loved very deeply, whose philandering husband had broken her heart, and who was so fiercely loyal and deeply in love with bernie, who would have given up her whole life to move across the world with her, told her she chose her over everything else, would never have cheated on her, but, apparently, when tv writers want a plot device to break a couple up, characterisation goes out of the window!!!!

unsurprisingly, the whole ros / leanne breakup is happening while ros remains offscreen. i understand that theresa was a guest cast member, but really, this is another knife in the back. they're telling us ros has left leanne, but they're not even letting us see her, hear it from her, try to make sense of it; but that's part of the problem, isn't it, because it doesn't make any sense. and, in the same way that bernie died offscreen, another sapphic character is destroyed from behind the scenes.

i realise that bernie was revealed not to have died eventually, and that she and serena reunited, and, yes, i am glad, but that doesn't make up for their having broken them up in that way or having killed her off in the first place. it doesn't ameliorate the damage which had already been done, and it doesn't mean they didn't conform to the bury your gays trope after what they'd already done with elinor's death.

so, is this what we're doing now, soap writers, when we want to break up two women? just deciding, arbitrarily, that one of them has an affair, and / or making something awful happen offscreen, where the viewers can't see it?

because that doesn't help. it doesn't make it better. it still hurts, very deeply, even if we can't see where the pain is coming from.

I was looking for the extended spoilers for Aftershock but the Radio Times spoilers for the episode on January 13th are already out even though the episode isn’t even on the BBC website yet!

Post-hiatus spoilers really come out at weird times.

I think ages ago I made a joke about Sah’s resignation just not happening even after like months of time passing in canon purely because Jan isn’t in the mood for dealing with it but is that what has gone on cause they seem to very much still be working at Holby? Presumably they’re doubting the resignation.

And, hey, now we’re at three whole weeks of the writers remembering Jacob exists.

Jodie is donating her kidney which is like not a surprising plot development, but since Max leaves anyway, I wonder what ends up going wrong.

The cast list includes the entire polyfailure which used to be cause for excitement when we got the spoilers in summer but now is just like :( I also noticed that this is also the first episode I’ve seen Jan in the cast list for.

Weirdly, the Radio Times Aftershock spoilers are just the BBC’s episode description and this is like way more detailed than that, which is a shame cause I’d like to get more details on the Teddy stuff so I know whether to lower my expectations.

Ok I have a lot of thoughts about Saturdays episode so here we go

Max's Exit

What was that. Honselty that is as nice as I can put it. This character that we have started to learn more about has just been given one of the worst exits in my opinion. There were so many opportunities for further storyline beyond the Jodie and Kindney failure ones. For example, his life before he came to work at Holby, medical school (more Dylan yay) especially how they got to know eachother abd one I really wanted was what happened between him and Jodies mum. There was so many opportunities and instead they gave him a rushed exit which made the whole getting to know Jodie plot useless.

Okay so I know casualty and I have a feeling the most we are going to get about her reaction to maxs exit is a half arsed convosation between either her and Dylan or her and Teddy abd a line about it now and then. I hope that we have some more about it because ngl if my estranged father came back into my life and made practically no effort to connect with me and I practically had to force him to take my kidney because he was slowly dying then he left without saying goodbye, that would give me trust issues. On another note, I'm liking her and Teddy and hope we have supportive Teddy.

I loved Dylan this episode ( nothing new there ) happy he's gradually getting more and more screentime. I hope we get some reaction from him about Max leaving.

Charlie, Stevie and the police guy whose name I cba to remeber

Okay I hope that Stevie is all okay, I love her, she best not leave. I'm glad police dude was exposed and I hope that Mel is okay ( the spoilers for next week are making me excited but scared )

I have a feeling Charlie's last scenes are going to be here before we know it 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

I don’t watch Holby, it just never seemed necessary.

But I want to know what al the stuff is that has to be addressed about “Sacha after Jac’s death”?

Sacha and Jac were best friends. (I assume you know Jac, as she's appeared/been mentioned on Casualty quite a lot, but in case you don't - she was clinical lead of Darwin ward for a long time, a cardiothoracic surgeon, one of Holby's most popular and long-running characters, and got misogynistically fridged in the finale despite the actress being very upset about it and wanting to move to Casualty.)

Well, "best friends" feels like understating it: they were very, very close, basically platonic soulmates, and they've said they see each other as the brother/sister respectively they never had. Jac wanted Sacha to raise her daughter for her if she died. They lived together for a fairly long while. It was a really wonderful and special friendship, I'm trying to think if there's any friendships on Casualty to compare it to but I can't think of any that reach their level. Maybe Dylan and David.

Sacha has depression, that has been really quite severe at times. In 2018, he was suicidal (and one of the stressors that caused him to feel that way was Jac being physically ill). Jac really helped him and supported him with this (and knew what it was like from experience, being mentally ill herself), to the point of inviting him to come and live with her so she could look after him.

Sacha's suffered a lot of trauma over the past few years. His longtime love/fiancee Essie (who had also helped him with his depression) passed away on their wedding day. After that, he was the victim of an abusive relationship with a woman named Jodie. The show barely let Jac help him with either of these for some reason (they even timed the Jodie storyline to coincide with Jac going on a break from the show!), which was frustrating enough, and didn't seem to care for how these things would affect Sacha's mental health.

Then they killed Jac off. Sacha only had a few weeks of even knowing that Jac was terminally ill before she died. Her last words were to him, as well. His dearest friend of over a decade died and, understandably, a lot of fans (one of them being me) were upset over how much this would cause a depression relapse for Sacha, and how he barely has anyone around to support him with both Jac and Essie dead.

It's something that really needed to be touched on IMO, when he appeared on Casualty, and it wasn't. Even a brief mention of Sacha getting counselling or going to a support group would have been something to both acknowledge how losing Jac would've affected him, and assure us that he was being supported and helped by the people around him.

I hope all that made sense, and wasn't too long an explanation or anything.

I am completely exhausted from doing a presentation today but Casualty have confirmed it's coming back on the 30th, which isn't that exciting, but they've also said we're getting a trailer tomorrow, and revealed the next episode and chapter title earlier than I expected. I've been missing doing my little spoiler post even if I don't have anything fun to say so I thought I'd do one. I'll try to do a trailer review tomorrow but I'm quite busy for the next couple days so I might not get around to it until Friday.

Now feels like a good time to acknowledge that the 12 episode miniseries have fully replaced the longer series, which makes sense I guess but is annoying for referring to episodes when I can't be bothered with the title. Like, Too Much, Too Young used to be 38x05 now what? I'm just going with DFx10.

The new chapter is called The Ties That Bind Us which immediately set off my 'pre-existing episode with that title' alarms and there have been Casualty and Holby episodes with that title/a similar title respectively but I'm surprised my brain would be aware of them. EDIT: the new chapter was called The Ties That Bind Us, last night when I first checked the episode, this morning the new chapter is now called A History of Violence. No clue why that change happened, this is how it looked last night:

The first episode when we come back... I think a lot of people are probably thinking what I'm thinking: We will never be free from Faith. I was optimistic enough to think we might not have to have her as this central focus of half the show for a couple months but I now recognise that I was stupid for thinking that; the writers will never let go of this. To default to the Classic Mercury Response To Faith Stuff™: no comment.

But I love Stevie, and I'm glad to see them immediately picking up Jodie and Max's stuff when we come back because that reassures me about them dealing with everything before he leaves so that looks good.

My response to seeing that Casualty is properly coming back and we're getting a trailer was not what I expected, I thought I wanted it back but I guess I'm more worried about what they'll do with the polyfailure (and more specifically Teddy) after this than I even thought I was because I just kind of quite loudly said "not already" the moment I saw it. I guess I am happy to have new stuff to talk about but also the hiatus gave me an excuse to go on unprompted series 36 rants. Maybe the trailer will be incredible and it will make me feel better about it, and I'm hoping the trailer gives everyone else nice and reassuring shots of their faves doing plot-related things that don't make them feel ill as well, but I'm half-expecting a trailer that has me doing overtime in the Teddy's Unwilling PR Agent job.
