"I Double Dare You," "Leigh Sings on a Record"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A couple of months after Pat and Johnny Martin visited the Guarneres, Leigh was working at the radio station in Philadelphia. She had just completed her morning show. The station manager went into the studio to speak with her.
He told Leigh that there was an important long distance call for her from Laverne Andrews. She went to the station manager's office to take the telephone call.
Andrews surprised Leigh, telling her that the sisters' record label, Decca, wanted to make a new record from the master tapes of the Paris concert that was featured on CBS radio nationwide. Laverne said the concert was very popular and well liked by those who heard the broadcast. People had been writing to Decca to inquire if an album of the show was going to become available in stores.
The new Mrs. Guarnere was almost shocked into silence by the news. Andrews then informed her,
"They've told us that this album will probably be a big seller. Hold on to your hat, Leigh, since you performed in that show, you're getting a small percentage of the royalties from the sales.
Our manager said that you unfortunately won't get the same percentage we get. We're in favor of you getting the same amount, but legally speaking, our manager's hands are tied." Leigh told her,
"Don't even worry about that. This is incredible news! I'm just happy to be on the recording. When will the album be available to buy? That's the first question Bill will ask." Laverne told her that the album would be released around Thanksgiving.
When Leigh was finished with work for the day, she stopped by a local market to get the ingredients for antipasto and a nice bottle of red wine. After returning home, she quickly made the batter for a few batches of pizzelles and set about making Bill's favorite cookies.
Leigh decided to make her husband's favorite meal of spaghetti with one meat ball. She used the gravy recipe from her former roommate and made the antipasto. The red wine was uncorked to allow it to breathe.
After the cooking was finished, except for the pasta, Leigh put on the red Wiggle Dress with the Sweetheart Neckline, the dress Guarnere liked the best on her.
When Bill got home, he noticed the dress,
"Baby, you look like a million bucks!" He then embraced and kissed her. Guarnere added, "Somethin' smells great. Is that ( he pronounced the word as " dat") your spaghetti gravy an' some pizzelles?" Leigh confirmed that she made the gravy and the cookies. She excitedly told him the good news about the album. Bill shouted,
"Holy God, Sweetheart! That's wonderful news!" He gave her an extra passionate kiss, saying,
"Think of it, you're gonna be on a record. Those things will sell like hotcakes. Gettin' even a small percentage of the money will be a super addition to our savins account. We can put it toward buyin' a house or startin' a family, whatever ya wanna do."
"I'm in favor of either idea, so whatever you decide is fine." They wound up deciding to put the money in savings for hospital expenses when they were ready to start a family.
"Honey, I gotta tell Ma an' Pop the good news. Is it OK if I call 'em before you call your folks?" Leigh said that was fine with her. Guarnere quickly dialed the telephone number for his parents' house. Augusta answered and Bill told her,
"Ma, I have some excitin' news."
"Are you and Leigh havin' a baby?"
"No, Ma, this is even bigger news than that." When he told Augusta about the record album, Leigh clearly heard her shouting,
"Oh my God, Billy! Leigh's gonna be on a record? Wait just a minute, I need to tell your pop." Mrs. Guarnere translated her son's message and Joseph replied.
"Your pop says to tell Leigh congratulations. He's very happy for her. Would ya please put her on the phone?" Bill handed the telephone to Leigh,
"Hello, Mama. I'm still shocked by the good news."
"Sweetie, you've earned it because of your talent. As soon as that record goes on sale, you bet your bottom dollar that we're buyin' it." Leigh thanked Mrs. Guarnere for her kind words. Before hanging up, Augusta told her,
"We're proud of you, Leigh, and we love you." Leigh told her mother-in-law that she loved her and her father-in-law, too. The Spencers were as happy as the Guarneres to hear about the record and Cal said that he would buy a copy as soon as the album went on sale.
After the call ended, Bill told Leigh,
"Baby, I've always been proud of ya, but this is the icin' on the cake. I'm gonna be the first one in line at the record store when it goes on sale, even if I have to wait there all night. While I'm waitin' in line, I'll tell people that the same Leigh Guarnere on the record is my wife."
"Actually, Honey, you won' t have to buy the record. Once it's made, we'll get a complimentary copy from Decca Records." Bill looked agitated for a moment and he frowned,
"Oh, hell, we ain't got a record player. I'm gonna buy a nice one an' I want ya to go wit' me to pick it out. You know what sounds good, since you're a professional singer an' a musician." Leigh agreed to go to the store with him, asking,
"Please, Bill, don't brag too much. Other people probably aren't as crazy about my singing as my sweet husband."
"I'll try to not go overboard wit' the braggin'. Sweetheart, those people in Paris gave ya a standin' ovation. That record company decided to make a record outta that broadcast. You sang in that show an' you're part o' why that show was a success." Leigh hugged him,
"I appreciate your support and your enthusiasm, Honey. It's wonderful that we'll have a recording of the night our engagement was announced.
"I wish somebody made a movie of that show. Someday our kids could see their beautiful ma on stage, an' they could see how much their ma an' pop love each other, 'course they'd already know that."
"I wish a movie of the show existed, too. That way our kids could see how handsome their pop looked in his uniform. They could see and hear what their mama did onstage, too."
"How about we return to reality and have some supper?" Bill insisted on helping her get everything served. Once they were seated he asked the blessing.
"Antipasto before the spaghetti, you're spoilin' me, Baby."
"I thought we should celebrate the good news." Guarnere got the spaghetti served and he brought the bowl of sauce to the table with some freshly grated parmesan. They enjoyed fresh garlic butter on some Italian bread Leigh made the day before.
"The first time you made this gravy for me was when we got to Aldebourne." Leigh laughed,
"That was the day I surprised you with what I didn't wear. Good thing I had the gravy simmering because we were also simmering and supper was delayed." Guarnere winked at her,
"Oh, I'll never forget how ya surprised me. You're doin' better, Baby. Bein' in an Italian family an' livin' in an Italian neighborhood is payin' off. You didn't call it sauce."
"I'm doing my best to be a good Italian wife and fit in where the neighborhood is concerned.
"Baby, you're the best wife in the neighborhood an' you're fittin' in just fine."
The next day, after Bill and Leigh were finished with work, they went downtown to shop for a record player. After listening to several models, they chose an RCA record player and radio combination with built in speakers. A salesman introduced himself and asked if he could assist them.
"I'm Bill Guarnere an' this is my wife, Leigh. We'd like to buy this record player an' radio. My wife sang as a guest in the concert wit' the Andrews Sisters that was on CBS Radio last October. Decca Records is usin' the tapes from that show to make a new record that's coming' out in November." The salesman replied,
"My wife and I really enjoyed that concert. Mrs. Guarnere, are you the same Leigh Guarnere who is on our local CBS Radio station?" She confirmed that she was the singer named Leigh who had shows on CBS Radio. Then the salesman added as he looked at Bill,
"If that's the case, you're the paratrooper who joined them onstage when the Andrews Sisters sang to you and your wife, of course she was your fiancee then. I'm definitely buying that record.
Mrs. Guarnere, if it wouldn't be too much trouble, would you please autograph my record album after I buy it?"
"I'd be happy to sign it." She gave him the telephone number of the receptionist at the radio station and asked him,
"Would you please call this number after you get the record? I'll get a message from the receptionist and I promise to come back here to sign your album."
The salesman thanked Leigh and he rang up the item on the cash register, thanking Bill for his purchase. Guarnere carried their new record player and radio in its sturdy cardboard box to their car.
"Baby, you got a fan wantin' your autograph an' the album ain't even for sale. Ya can't blame me for feelin' proud."
"It's nice that the salesman enjoyed the radio broadcast from Paris. I was surprised the he wants me to sign the album for him. I thought that he was going to ask me if I could get the Andrews Sisters to autograph the album for him."
After Bill loaded the box into the trunk of their car, he kissed Leigh before opening the car door for her,
"I'm still gonna be your biggest fan, no matter how many albums are sold." Leigh had a mischievous glint in her eyes,
"That's a good thing, Honey. I plan to reward my biggest fan in the bedroom." Guarnere chuckled,
"You're somethin' else, ya little fireball. Does this mean that I have to buy all the records or will ya reward me wit'out spendin' all o' our money on records?"
"No purchase is necessary, you handsome smart ass. I'm all yours." Before he started the car and drove home, he told her,
"I like the sound o' that, Baby."
A few days after the record player was purchased, Leigh once again received a call from one of the Andrews Sisters while she was at work. Maxene Andrews told her that a concert was being planned at Madison Square Garden a few weeks before the album went on sale. Andrews asked,
"Is it possible for you to do this show with us? We're doing many of the same songs that were in the Paris concert. Since you're going to be on the album, it stands to reason that you should be in the show, too." Leigh excitedly confirmed that she would love to be in the show.
Andrews asked if Leigh would once again wear the red velvet and lace dress again. Their costume designer thought that the red dress looked perfect for the upcoming show since the Paris concert was basically being re-created. The dress was currently in storage along with the sisters' trademark uniforms.
"I'd love to wear that beautiful dress again." She was happily surprised when Maxene told her,
"Leigh, we're going all out. If your husband would agree to join us again onstage, we would like to rent a top quality tuxedo and dress shoes for him." Leigh smiled, imagining Bill's reaction to the news.
"That sounds wonderful! I think we already know Bill's answer to your question." She gave Andrews the correct sizes for the trousers, shirt and the tuxedo coat, plus Bill's shoe size, adding, "My husband will be very eager to be onstage with his favorite group." Leigh laughed,
You might hear my mother-in-law's excited response when I tell her the good news. Mama tends to get loud when she's excited or happy about something."
"We would be glad to meet with your parents, in-laws and other family members after the show is over." Before the women ended their conversation, Leigh told her,
"I'm sure everyone will be excited to meet you and your sisters. My mother-in-law and the others are big fans of you and your sisters' singing." Predictably, Guarnere was excited about the show and he liked the idea of wearing the tuxedo onstage.
"They're payin' good money to make me look like a sharp dressin' man. Not only do we get to sorta relive the Paris show, I get to join my beautiful wife onstage an' be there wit' my favorite group." Leigh told him the rest of the good news about the show,
"Honey, they're reserving the best seats in the house for our families, plus they are paying to send us, our parents, Teresa, your other sisters and their husbands and their kids plus my grandparents, to a very nice hotel in New York City. They're providing limousine service for all of us, too." Bill grinned,
"We're all goin' in style.
Lacey Davis, who was living in New York City, was scanning the staple publication of the entertainment industry, "Variety." An ad mentioned that the famed trio's Paris concert featuring the star of the Philadelphia CBS affiliate would soon be sold in record stores. Davis then read a paragraph about the Andrews Sisters and Leigh appearing in a concert at Madison Square Garden to kick off the release of the record.
She angrily threw the magazine into a nearby trash can. Lacey still felt that Leigh had cheated her out of the recognition and fame that should have been hers. Davis was still working on regaining her figure after giving birth to a son. The baby was adopted by a childless couple in the borough of Queens.
The night of the show, family members and friends of Leigh thoroughly enjoyed the V.I.P. treatment of staying in a nice hotel and riding to Madison Square Garden in limousines. Gina Ricci traveled with the Spencers and had a room reserved at the hotel.
It was the first time some of the Guarnere family, Leigh, her parents and her maternal grandparents visited New York City. Leigh told her grandmother, Mary Elliott,
"I thought that Philadelphia was a large city. This is overwhelming." Mary agreed that the size of the city seemed daunting. She and her husband, John were enjoying spending time with their granddaughter and Bill. Both of the Elliotts adored Guarnere. They thought of him as their grandson by marriage.
The Elliotts met Bill when they traveled to Philadelphia for his wedding to Leigh. Mary was instantly taken with his polite behavior. John admired Bill's courage and compassion.
Guarnere's parents thanked John and Mary for the fresh beef that was delivered in a railroad car for frozen food. Mary and Augusta became friends very quickly. Despite the fact that Mrs. Guarnere was the same age as Louise Spencer, both women were alike in many ways. They loved their families and they also loved to prepare food for their families.
Since they experienced dire economic conditions when they were much younger, Augusta and Mary knew all too well about occasionally not having enough to eat. This made them determined to ensure that every visitor to their homes would never leave with an empty stomach.
The Guarneres, the Spencers, other family members and Gina Ricci took up a large section of the first row of seats closest to the stage. Everyone wore their best clothes and Bill was gently teased by his sisters for "lookin' like a high society fella" in his tuxedo.
Augusta knew in advance that Bill would go onstage with Leigh and the famous trio of sisters. She was proud and very eager to see her son in the spotlight. Prior to the show, Bill had a corsage of white Sweetheart Roses delivered to his wife. She pinned them on the red velvet dress covered in red lace. Leigh enjoyed the message Guarnere wrote on the card enclosed with the corsage,
"My beautiful bride will be a star tonight. Love, Bill."
The sisters and Leigh performed the same songs that would appear on the album of the Paris concert. Her grandparents were in
awe of her singing. They hadn't witnessed Leigh performing in front of a large audience and they were amazed at the way she seemed to own the stage. When Bill was asked to join the group onstage, Augusta was clearly heard as she loudly exclaimed,
"That's my son! 'atta boy, Billy!" A photographer from The New York Times took several pictures of Bill, Leigh and the Andrews Sisters. When the sisters announced,
"We're doing this next number for the newlyweds, who were married in June." Bill once again gently pulled Leigh onto his lap as the sisters sang, "In Apple Blossom Time." Augusta used her lace edged handkerchief as she wiped away tears of joy, telling her husband in his native language,
"It's so sweet and beautiful." Mr. Guarnere agreed. Bill gave his wife a tender kiss before he left the stage. He was grinning and wiping her red lipstick from his lips with his handkerchief as he walked back to his seat.
The next song was a new number called "Strip Polka," about a burlesque performer who "stops (stripping) and always just in time." Patty Andrews usually performed a comedic routine during an instrumental part of the song.
She asked Leigh if she would try the comedic routine since her family was in the audience. Leigh happily agreed to learn the routine. During the instrumental section, the music suggested the 'bump and grind' burlesque style. At first, Leigh stood at the microphone.
As the music played, she got into the spirit of the music and put both hands on top of her head, doing a comical, exaggerated swaying of her hips. Then, she realized that the sisters were looking at her with raised eyebrows and questioning expressions on their faces.
Leigh looked embarrassed at being caught up in the music and immediately stood up straight, looking very proper as the audience laughed and applauded. Bill was smiling and applauding, loudly saying,
"Ain't nothin' my baby can't do!" The photographer from The New York Times made sure that Leigh's performance was documented on film. Once again, the audience gave her a standing ovation at the end of the concert. This was also photographed for the city's leading newspaper.
As promised, after the concert was over, the sisters signed autographs and posed for pictures taken by Leigh's extended family and friends. Augusta and Joseph posed with the sisters for a picture that would be prominently displayed in their home.
The next day, Lacey Davis saw the pictures and the reviews about the concert. She looked wistfully at the pictures of Bill wearing a tuxedo, thinking,
"He looks so damn handsome, even if he only has one leg. I'd change my mind about not liking crippled men if I could have one night with him. What the hell does he see in Leigh?" She was almost nauseated at the way the reviewer of the concert seemed to gush over her former singing partner's performance.
Bill asked the reporter to send copies of the pictures and the story in the newspaper. The news writer obliged and sent enough pictures for most of the immediate family members plus Bill and Leigh. He also sent enough copies of the paper for everyone in the family, the friends of the family, and the newlyweds.
Four months later, after regaining her figure, Davis took a job as a receptionist in a music producer's office. She planned to save her money so she could eventually move to California, specifically Hollywood.
Lacey hoped to begin her career in show business as a dancer in movies. She thought that living far from newspaper coverage of Leigh's performances would be healthier for her than seething as she read a review or saw a picture of the woman she perceived as her rival.
A few days later, Grayson O'Brian heard the guard who occupied the office close to his prison cell talking excitedly with another prison guard about his favorite radio performer, Leigh Guarnere.
The guard told his friend that the CBS radio star's performance with the Andrews Sisters would be made into an upcoming record album. Gray fervently hoped that the guard wouldn't be allowed to play records in his office. O'Brian thought that he heard enough of Leigh's singing on the radio without having to hear her on a record.
As promised, Bill and Leigh were sent a complimentary copy of the upcoming album. Guarnere eagerly played the album on the new record player. He and Leigh cuddled together on the couch as they listened and reminisced about the night their engagement was announced during the broadcast. Leigh was taken aback at the way she sounded on the record. She asked Bill,
"Honey, did I really sound like that or did they somehow enhance my voice?"
"That's exactly how ya sounded, Baby. You done the best singin' I'd ever heard that night. Leigh, you owned that stage an' that audience." She kissed him, I
"Flattery will get you everywhere with me." When the audience began to applaud for Leigh and the standing ovation took place, Bill was happy to see that his wife had a beaming smile as she relived the event.
"That's when ya owned the stage, Baby. I'm still goddamned proud o' ya." When the records went on sale, the fans of Leigh's radio program bought several copies. Those who knew Leigh in the neighborhood asked for and received autographs on their albums.
The CBS radio station in Philadelphia sponsored a meet and greet session in a local hotel for fans of the various radio shows. Leigh signed several albums and met fans during the event that was advertised in the newspaper as "A Luncheon With Leigh."
Bill asked for and received a few hours off from work to attend the event with his parents. Cal and Louise Spencer took a train to Philadelphia and they were seated with Bill, Augusta and Joseph Guarnere in the audience. Teresa, Julia and Maria were unable to get time off from work and they were disappointed to miss the event.
Bill, the Guarneres and the Spencers were both happy and proud when Leigh asked them to stand up while the audience applauded for them.
She and Bill replaced Augusta's and Joseph's record player when it died of old age one month after the luncheon event sponsored by the CBS affiliate in Philadelphia. The elder Guarneres frequently played the album. Their son favored the album over other albums owned by himself and Leigh.
The release didn't make Leigh an overnight star as Bill had hoped, but the national sales provided enough money to cover hospital and living expenses for more than one baby. A small amount of the money was saved to purchase their home or possibly another house in the same neighborhood.

Username change
@how-are-those-nuts-sarge --> @sergeant-spoons
Due to personal reasons I have had to transfer this blog to another account (@stolemyspoons) and changed my username. This also means that links that formerly worked as, for example, “how-are-those-nuts-sarge.tumblr.com/masterlist” will no longer work. I will be making the necessary changes over the next few days.
I will also be changing my ao3 @ soon. Hopefully the account will remain the same with comments and such but we’ll see.

Pollie could remember when the Turnpike had first opened, and people from places like Carlisle, Harrisburg, and Philadelphia had started pouring out to Somerset County to see the mountains or something of that sort. Pollie always thought the mountains were average-looking, but that probably just came from having been around them for so long.

I Have Always Loved You (Joe Liebgott x Reader)
1st HBO War 21 Secret Santa gift for @how-are-those-nuts-sarge
Merry Christmas! I’m your Secret Santa!
This was the first prompt:
1. Anything friends to lovers or initial-dislike-to-lovers with a character x reader/OC, preferably with a happy ending
I decided to do a Joe Liebgott x reader since I have more experience with writing for x reader and I don’t really have any OCs.
There are mentions of the reader being female (because I mostly based it off of myself, but I did try to be mindful about descriptive words; and so I don’t really think there are any specific descriptions of reader other than female)
Word count: ~1.9k (wow, look who got a little carried away!)
Key: Y/N/N = Your nickname
Warnings: injuries (although nothing graphic is described), some mild language (swearing), betting (gambling), I guess, potentially bad grammar, and probably a crappy attempt at fluff
Disclaimer: I do not own Band of Brothers. I do not own any of the characters from Band of Brothers that are depicted. I do not own any scenes from Band of Brothers that are depicted (sometimes verbatim from the episode/script). I am not claiming to own any of these things. All credits go to the appropriate people such as executive producers, actors, writers, directors, script editors, etc.
I really hope you enjoy it!
P.S.: I’ve never really shared anything I’ve written publicly like this before (so apologizes for any sloppy writing (I formatted this weirdly, I feel) or OOC Liebs, also, tropes such as friends-to-lovers isn’t really something I’ve had experience with writing, so sorry if it kind of sucks), but I really do enjoy writing and have gotten positive feedback from those I have let read my writing, so I wanted to do this Secret Santa thing and I’ve really enjoyed writing for your prompts. And I really hope you like it!

Being a female paratrooper wasn’t exactly the easiest thing in the world. But you did the best you could. And you excelled when everyone thought you’d fail. The training was brutal, but you got through it. Something you excepted you’d also have to deal with was the men you were training alongside. At first, a lot of them didn’t accept you. But they eventually came around when they saw how dedicated you were. And a lot of them flirted with you. Especially Tab and Liebgott. After a while of showing absolutely no interest in him and being obviously annoyed by him, Tab laid off the flirting.
But Joe did not. He persisted despite you showing no interest in him and being annoyed by him. He sat with you at meals and chatted you up. He basically wouldn’t leave you alone for most of training.
But you slowly got used to his presence since it was clear he had no intention of leaving you alone. And he eventually stopped flirting with you all the time and you actually started to get to know and like each other a bit. And it soon got to the point where neither of you would leave the other alone and it was unclear which of you was the bigger annoyance to the other.
You’d hang out all the time. You’d still eat meals together. You’d help each other out.
And Joe became very protective of you. You joked with him often about him being jealous and since he wasn’t your boyfriend, he had no say in what you did with whom. He’d play it off every time and say he wasn’t jealous (he totally was) and how he just cared about you and didn’t want to see you get hurt. You knew it was BS. He did too.
In combat, his concern and care for you only grew. He insisted you two always share a foxhole so he always knew where you were and could keep you safe.
You, along with practically everyone else, always joked about how he was with you even though he actually wasn’t (he just acted like he was). He still insisted, for the longest time, that he was just concerned about his friend.
Of course he initially flirted with you because he thought you were gorgeous. And you were the only girl around. But then he got to know you and like you for who you really were, and as a friend. He pushed whatever feelings he might have had down deep inside of him. But they were always there.
And although he was annoying at first, when you really got to know him, as a friend, you started to really like him too. But you tried to suppress your feelings as best as you could.
You two were friends and as far as either of you knew, that’s all the other thought of you as.
That was all until Bastogne when you almost died when an artillery shell went off near you. You caught some shrapnel in the shoulder, but Doc Roe was able to patch you up pretty well. But it really was a close one. If that shell had landed any closer, you’d have been a goner.
Joe kind of started to panic after that. He refused to let you out of his sight. This incident had proven what he always thought was just simply not true: you were as vulnerable to death as the rest of them. He had refused to believe that anything could happen to you before that point.
You went through a similar, but smaller, panic in Holland when Joe had gotten hit. But you felt better when he got better. You still feared what else might happen, though. The war was a funny thing. Death was all around you. But you never think anything can happen to you. Until it does.
You tried to reassure Joe that you were completely fine and absolutely going to live, so he could stop mothering you. And he did eventually back off, but only after much hounding from Roe and yourself.
He started to distance himself from you a little bit in Haguenau. At first you wondered why and were quite offended. But then you realized after what had happened to both of you, he didn’t want to be reminded that either or both of you could die and that would be just about the worst thing that could ever happen. But it was a bit difficult to avoid someone who was in the same platoon as you and whose bed was in the same bunk as yours. But you two simply just didn’t talk to each other despite having to see each other and hear the other sleep (and by that I mean you have to hear Joe snore).
By the time you got to Germany, the war seemed to be coming to a close and you all felt a hell of a lot safer than you’d been for the past year or so. Joe came to find you one day where you were staying. You opened the door and the biggest smiled erupted on both of your faces.
“Hi.”
“Hi.”
“So, uh, how have you been?”
“How have I been? How have I been?! Joseph David Liebgott, you haven’t talked to me in months! How do you think I’ve been?!”
“Well, I dunno. I haven’t talked to you in a few months, that’s why I’m asking.”
You hit him in the arm.
“Ow! What was that for?!”
“For being an idiot.”
“Yeah, but you love me anyway, right?” A stupid grin adorned his face.
You didn’t answer right away. You both loved each other. But neither of you knew whether it was still platonic or if it was now romantic. And neither of you had ever said the word love in relation to the two of you.
“Yes,” you finally answered, “I do love you anyway. Even, and maybe especially, when you’re an idiot. I love you all the time. I always have.”
You were both equally shocked by the confession. You didn’t expect to just say that. Not like this. And he sure as hell wasn’t expecting it at all.
“Really? You...you love me all the time and you always have?”
“Yes,” it’s not like you regretted confessing your love to him, no, not at all. You just weren’t expecting to be having this discussion now and you had no idea how he’d react. And you certainly weren’t going to try to back out of it no matter how badly you wanted to. It was true. Why would you tell the truth and then lie about it? It’s not like he would’ve let you get away with it anyway.
“Well, that’s great!”
“It is?”
“Well, yeah, because I’ve always loved you, too. Why do you think I wouldn’t stop flirting with you when we first met? And why do you think I stuck around after the flirting? And why do you think you getting hurt sent me into such a panic? I thought I was gonna lose you, Y/N/N! And...and I just couldn’t bear the thought of that!”
Joe was crying now. You had never seen him cry before. You instinctively hugged him. It was a weak hug at first because you didn't know how he'd receive it. But he immediately wrapped his arms around you and squeezed you tightly. He laid his head atop yours. He brought one of his hands into your hair.
“I love you so much it hurts sometimes,” he whispered into your hair before kissing your head.
You didn’t respond. You didn’t need to. You and Joe just stood there in each other's arms for a while until him had calmed down.
He let go of you. He held your face in his hands and looked you in the eyes with so much love it almost made you want to cry.
“I love you, so, so much. I never want to lose you.”
“I don’t want to lose you, either,” you choked out. You’d be lying if you said him getting hit in Holland hadn’t scared you more than you let on.
Joe leaned in and kissed you. It was like all of the pent up emotions he felt for you were being channeled into this one, first kiss that the two of you were sharing. You melted into it and kissed back. Neither of you knew how long it had been before you needed air and had to pull apart. And you two couldn’t stop smiling.
“So, we’ve got a lot of time to make up for, don’t we?” Joe joked.
“I suppose we do.” You agreed.
“What should we do first?”
“I don’t know. What would you like to do first?”
“Well, I suppose we should have a first date...”
“Doesn’t a first date traditionally come before the first kiss?” You asked.
“Well nobody said we had to do things in order.”
“There isn’t anybody to tell us what to do because we haven’t told anybody yet!”
“Yeah, but you know they all already knew we liked each other, right?”
“What do you mean?”
“All the way back in training, I heard a lot of the guys betting on who would confess first and when it would happen. I think Frank owes George 50 bucks now because you confessed first.”
“Well, I guess that sucks for Frank. I guess I’m gonna have to apologize to him.”
“Yeah, I guess it does. But why would you have to do that?”
“Well if he’s gonna be out 50 bucks because of me, I feel kinda bad.”
“Why the hell would you feel back about confessing how you feel? Didn’t it turn out pretty alright for you?”
“Of course it did,” you punched him lightly in the arm, “but it’s not as if I was planning on doing it at that time to spite Frank. It kinda just happened. It’s not my fault.”
“Actually, I think Toye owes Bill 50 bucks because you waited this long to confess. Someone’s gonna have to tell him and I, uh, I don’t think he’ll be too happy.”
“Huh?”
“See, Frank owes George 50 bucks because you confessed. Toye owes Bill 50 bucks because the confession happened so late. And I think Lt. Welsh owes Captain Nixon 100 bucks because you confessed so late.”
“Ok...I have...several questions. The first of which is, why do you know so much about all of this?”
Joe shrugged.
“I eavesdrop a lot, I guess.”
“Snoop.”
“Alright, that’s one question.”
“Right. the second one is...exactly how many bets were made on the two of us.”
“Three.”
“And what were the bets?”
“Who would confess, when it would be, and who would confess when.”
“Separate and then together?”
“Yes.”
“And the officers were in on it?”
“Just Welsh and Nixon, I think.”
“Why were so many people invested in us?”
Joe shrugged again.
“Hell if I know.”
“Oh, so that you don’t know.”
“Hey! I don’t know everything.”
“You sure act like you do.”
“Oh, you love me anyway.”
“Didn’t we...just go through this?”
“We did.”
“And?”
“You love me anyway. You always have.”
“That’s right.”
“And I,” he began as he gently grasped shoulders, “have always loved you.”
He kissed your head. You smiled up at him and he smiled back down at you (sorry if you’re the same height/taller).
Maybe accidentally confessing your feelings for Joe wasn’t such a bad thing for you. Well...it definitely wasn’t for you, Joe, George, Bill, and Nixon. But it was a bad thing for Frank, Toye, and Welsh.
Oh well.
It was worth it. Because hey, no one told them to bet on Joe confessing earlier.
-The End-

*Author's note: St. Edmond's Church,in the picture shown above, is where the funeral was held for Bill Guarnere. I am guessing that this is the church he attended. The incident in the airplane really happened to Mr. Guarnere. My version of Bill Guarnere is solely based on the actor's portrayal in the movie.*
***********************************************************************
Saturday, June 23, 1945
Leigh awoke shortly before the sun rose. She went into the kitchen to make coffee and a light breakfast. Next, she went over a list of things to do before the limo driver provided by the USO came to pick up Melissa, Sue and herself and transport them to St. Edmond's Church.
The USO had also arranged for three more limousines, one to take Bill and his best man, another limousine would take the groomsmen and Guarnere's sisters, who were bridesmaids. The remaining car would take both Bill's and Leigh's parents.
Bill woke at sunrise in his bedroom at his parents' home. He had a big smile on his face as he thought,
"I marry my angel today." He thought back on how he met Leigh, the first time he heard her sing, the night he asked her to be his girl, their first kiss and the night Guarnere confessed his love for her, which was the same night he became Spencer's first lover.
Bill never doubted that he would make Leigh his wife until he was seriously injured in Bastogne. When he awoke in the field hospital the day after he was hit by the enemy, Guarnere celebrated the fact that he was still alive.
Then, he worried about his parents and Leigh if he didn't survive. Thanks to excellent medics and his resolve to never give up, he made it to the American Hospital in Paris. Bill knew that having Leigh by his side until he went to the military hospital in Maine played a big role in his recovery.
Meanwhile, Gina Ricci, Leigh's mother's friend, called to say that she would arrive at Spencer's new home after she had breakfast. Ricci was staying at a nearby hotel. She offered to style Leigh's hair for the wedding.
Spencer had washed her hair the night before and pinned it up the way she wore her hair at work. Leigh took a bath and put on a day dress, the usual undergarments and some black pumps. Then, she brushed her teeth.
She had her wedding gown in a garment bag, along with some stockings, a white lace garter belt, gossamer thin white silk panties, a white lace garter and a long slip.
Leigh had her makeup in her purse and her veil was carefully placed on a hanger and put in a smaller garment bag along with white pumps. She had installed bra cups in her gown, so there was no need for any extra lingerie.
Spencer put water into a percolator, knowing that Ricci enjoyed fresh coffee when she visited at her parents' home.Twenty minutes later, Ricci arrived, knocking on the front door.
Leigh let her in and Gina hugged her, saying,
"Happy wedding day, Leigh! I'll tell ya what, if I was 25 years younger, I would've gone after that good lookin' paisano you're about to marry. You kids are perfect for each other."
Spencer went into the kitchen, since Gina had to heat a curling iron on the stove. She opened a cupboard door and took out a large coffee mug. Leigh closed the cupboard door and took the mug to the stove, filling it with hot coffee from the percolator. She handed it to Gina and went to the counter by the stove, picking up the cookie jar. Leigh set it on the kitchen table and opened the lid,
"I remember that you like to have cookies with your coffee. Believe it or not, I made them." Ricci grinned and took out two of the thin cookies.
"You made these pizzelles?" Gina took a bite of the cookie,
"They're really good, Leigh. You're gonna make a good Italian wife, even if you're not Italian. I remember you said that these are Bill's favorite cookies. These taste like the cookies my mama used to make, God rest her soul."
"Thanks, Gina. I got the recipe and the pizzelle maker from Bill's mom. She's a sweet lady." Leigh sat in a chair at the kitchen table. Ricci unpinned Spencer's hair, placing the bobby pins on the table. The curling iron was heated and Gina got a few strands of Leigh's hair at a time, creating spiraled curls.
Since Spencer's hair was curly and wavy, when Ricci brushed her hair after using the curling iron, the waves in Leigh's hair would be under control. Spencer's face would be framed by the relaxed, soft curls.
Gina remarked,
"It's hard to believe that you're old enough to get married. Who knew that little Leigh Spencer would grow up to sing on the radio with the top group in the country? I heard that concert with your folks and you did a fabulous job.
Bill is gettin' a good girl for his wife. Your mom told me about how you visited him every day in all of the overseas hospitals and cooked for him. I lit candles for him and I'm glad he survived." Spencer thanked Ricci for lighting candles for Guarnere,
"Gina, Bill almost didn't make it home. He told me that when he was supposed to be flown to a hospital in Maine with some other seriously wounded soldiers, the engines started to sputter on the plane.
It went down a little bit, then the engines would come back on. Once, the plane went low enough to convince Bill that he had to get out of it. He told me that he didn't get through the war to die in an airplane before he got home.
Bill got up from a stretcher and hopped on one leg, telling the nurse, 'Give me a goddamn parachute. I'm goin' out the door.' He told me he decided to take his chances jumping out of the plane before it crashed.
The nurse told him to get back on the stretcher. He said, 'I'll kick that door open and jump out o' this plane.' Luckily the engines started to work again and the plane leveled out. They had to make an emergency landing in Gander, Newfoundland."
"Oh my God, Leigh! He had already been through so much. "
"I was horrified when Bill told me. Thank God he got home safe and sound. Just think, he hopped on one leg and he was ready to jump out of that plane! He's tough and determined. That's probably why he survived his injury."
Ricci finished with the curling iron. She set it on the stove to cool and began to brush Leigh's hair. Soft curls framed Spencer's face and her hair was perfectly coiffed. Gina took a can of hair spray out of her purse and sprayed Leigh's hair.
"Go have a look in the mirror and tell me what you think." Leigh went down the hall and entered the bathroom. She smiled upon seeing her hair styled to perfection. She returned to the kitchen, telling Ricci,
"Thanks, Gina. It looks beautiful! If you want more coffee or cookies, just help yourself. Spencer opened another cabinet door and took out a sugar bowl. She withdrew a five dollar bill and handed the money to Ricci.
" You don't owe me anything." Spencer eventually convinced Ricci to take the money to pay for her hair styling appointment and to leave a generous tip. Gina helped herself to another mug of coffee and two pizzelles. The women chatted for awhile and Ricci finished her coffee and cookies. Leigh asked her,
"Would you like to ride to the church with me in the limousine the USO provided? There's plenty of room. Two of my friends are riding with me. There's room for one more passenger." Gina happily accepted Spencer's offer,
"I've never ridden in a limo before. It's nice to know somebody famous."
"I'm not famous, the USO people are very generous." Soon, the limo arrived and the women rode to the church. When the limousine drivers picked up Bill, his Best Man Johnny Martin and the groomsmen, Joe Toye, George Luz, Bull Randleman and Buck Compton, Bill asked Johnny,
"Did ya ever think in a million years that we would be ridin' in one o' these fancy cars? " Martin grinned, telling Guarnere, "I never thought in a million years that you could pass for a gentleman." Bill ruffled Johnny's hair, saying,
"Shaddup, ya moron!"
Eugene Roe, Donald Malarkey, Colonel Sink, Lewis Nixon, Joe Liebgott, Frank Perconte and Major Winters attended the wedding. The men had no preference of being seated on the groom's or bride's family sections since they all knew Bill and Leigh.
The church organist played some instrumental pieces while the ushers helped get the friends and family members seated. When "The Wedding March" (the traditional music played at weddings) began, the priest, Bill, Joe Toye, Buck Compton , George Luz, Bull Randleman and Johnny Martin entered the area close to the altar from a small door on the right side of the church that led to the sacristy.
Bill was wearing his dress uniform adorned with all of his ribbons from the medals he was awarded. His jump wings were prominently displayed above the ribbons.
Guarnere's best man and groomsmen were similarly attired. The men wore their highly polished Corcoran boots. Bill was once again at a healthy weight and he looked handsome as he patiently awaited the appearance of his bride to be.
Next came Melissa, Leigh's Maid of Honor, Sue Swart Jordan, Teresa Guarnere and her sisters, Julia and Maria. Leigh's cousin's six year old son, Brian Howell was the ring bearer.
His eyes lit up at the sight of the men in their uniforms. He was quite taken with Bill. Upon meeting Guarnere, Brian told him that he would be a paratrooper someday.
Bill had an extra Screaming Eagle Airborne patch and he gave it to Brian. Guarnere smiled when he saw that the patch was sewn on one shoulder of Brian's suit jacket.
When Brian reached the altar he held the pillow with the rings in one hand and solemnly saluted Guarnere and his friends. They returned Howell's salute, smiling at him.
After everyone was in their proper places, the organist repeated the opening bars of "The Wedding March" at full volume. This was a time honored tradition that let those seated in the pews know that they should stand up before the bride begins her walk down the aisle. Family members and friends stood up and looked toward the entrance of the church.
Leigh had a beaming smile on her face and her arm was looped through her father's arm as they slowly walked toward the altar. She carried a bouquet of red and white roses with Baby's Breath and rose leaves with English Ivy. Bill caught his first glimpse of his bride in her wedding dress and veil. He thought,
"My baby's lookin' breathtakin'ly beautiful."
Guarnere had a brilliant smile on his face as Spencer got closer to him. When she stood a few inches from Bill, Leigh kissed her father's cheek.
Cal let go of her arm and, in the Italian tradition, shook hands with Bill before going to sit by his wife. Guarnere took Leigh's hand and kissed it, before taking her hand in his as they walked the short distance to the altar. He whispered,
"Baby, you're gorgeous!" " Thanks, Honey. You look so handsome."
The priest began the ceremony. During one part of the wedding, Bill and Leigh had to use kneelers similar to the ones in the pews. Guarnere anticipated this and had worked out a way to do this during his numerous physical therapy sessions.
They each took a candle and used the flames from both candles to light a single candle at the altar. Both candles then had the flames blown out while the single candle burned. This symbolized two becoming one.
Before the couple took their vows, the priest told family members and friends,
"At this time, the bride and groom wish to take a moment to speak.
Bill held both of Leigh's hands in his as he faced her, telling Spencer, their families and their friends,
"I'm thankful that (he pronounced the word as 'dat') the man upstairs gave me more than my share o' miracles an' some blessins. It was a miracle a guy in a jeep happened to show up right after Joe an' I got hit. That probably saved our lives 'cause we got the help we needed right away.I was blessed wit' good medics, doctors an' nurses who helped me stay alive an' recover."
Augusta Guarnere got a lace edged handkerchief from her purse and wiped some tears from her eyes as she listened to her son. Guarnere continued,
"I was blessed the day we met at Camp Toccoa. It was another blessin' when you agreed to be my girl. Sweetheart, I never told ya this, but somehow I knew when I asked you to be my girl, that I would marry ya someday. An' here we are!
Leigh, I was blessed to have ya by my side every day after I got hit in Bastogne. You cooked for me an' brought the food, even in terrible weather. Not once did ya take a break from visitin' me in every hospital from Paris to Scotland. I could see you were exhausted sometimes, but you never complained.
When I told ya to stay away from the hospital in Paris because I thought it would be too much for ya to take, you told me,
'Bill, General Patton himself couldn't keep me away from this hospital!'" There was a ripple of laughter in the church from the family members and friends.
"I knew you prayed for me every day an' lit a candle at Notre Dame Cathedral. One o' the nurses saw ya there an' told me. Havin' you there lookin' after me and bein' there made me feel stronger. I never had to wonder if you would still wanna get married after I lost my leg. You kept me sane, Leigh." Some of the Easy Company men quickly wiped tears from their eyes, hoping that no one noticed. Bill continued,
"Sweetheart, I love ya more than I can put into words. I'm honored an' blessed to make you my wife today." Spencer's parents, grandparents and Gina Ricci wiped away some tears . Most of Bill's family also wiped away some tears. They were touched by Guarnere's words. Leigh smiled and began to speak,
"Bill, the first day we met, I noticed and appreciated your kindness and compassion. You have always treated me with respect and you have always made me feel appreciated, loved, safe and treasured.
I thank God for bringing you into my life and I thank Him for saving your life. There are five occasions that are the happiest times of my life.
The first was when you asked me to be your girl when we were at Camp Toccoa. The second took place at Fort Benning when you confessed your love for me. Proposing to me in Paris was the third When you were officially off of the critical list in the hospital was the fourth occasion and becoming your wife today is the fifth occasion.
Bill, you made me sound heroic. I was there to help you because I love you." Both Louise Spencer and Augusta Guarnere wiped away some tears with lace edged handkerchiefs.
You're my hero. You helped save the life of your friend and you overcame a situation that would have crushed most men. I admire the way you never gave up and I thank God that He made you tough and determined.
I love you more than words can ever describe or explain, and I'm honored and blessed to become your wife today." The priest asked,
"William and Leigh, have you entered into marriage without coercion, freely and wholeheartedly?" They each replied,
"I have." The priest then asked,
"Are you prepared, as you follow the path of marriage, to love and honor each other for as long as you both shall live?" They each answered,
"I am." Next, the priest asked,
"Are you prepared to accept children lovingly from God and to bring them up according to the laws of Christ and his Church?" Bill and Leigh each replied,
"I am." The priest asked Bill and Leigh to continue holding hands as they said their vows. Bill said,
"I, William Joseph Guarnere, take you, Leigh Ann Spencer, to be my lawful wedded wife, to have an' to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness an' health, until death do us part." Leigh replied,
"I, Leigh Ann Spencer, take you, William Joseph Guarnere, to be my lawful wedded husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and health, until death do us part."
The priest acknowledged Bill's and Leigh's decision to marry. He then prayed for God to bless their union. Next, Brian Howell stepped up to stand by the priest as he performed a blessing over the wedding rings. Guarnere picked up Leigh's ring from the small pillow in Howell's hands.
"Leigh, receive this ring as a sign o' my love an' fidelity, in the name of the Father, an' of the Son, an' of the Holy Spirit." Bill put the gold band on her finger, placing her engagement ring on top of it. Spencer picked up Guarnere's ring,
"William, receive this ring as a sign of my love and fidelity, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." The priest told them,
"By the powers vested in me, according to the laws of Christ and his church and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, I pronounce you man and wife. William, you may kiss your bride."
Bill tenderly kissed Leigh and everyone applauded. The recessional music played as the newlyweds walked down the aisle hand in hand. They posed for many wedding pictures, including posing with both sets of parents and Leigh's grandparents.
Guarnere asked the photographer to take a picture of him kissing Leigh. The couple had their eyes closed the way they did in the black and white picture from the automated photo booth in London. The church bells began to chime.
Bill and Leigh stood near the entrance of the church to shake hands with or hug those who attended the wedding. Guests and family members lined the steps of the church to throw rice as Bill and Leigh walked out of the church and into a waiting limousine. They headed to a large reception room in a nearby hotel.
Once they were inside the car, Guarnere gave his wife a passionate kiss,
"Baby, I love you. This is the happiest day o' my life."
"I love you, too, Honey This is a dream come true and it's the happiest day of my life, too. You just made me the happiest woman in South Philadelphia."

Greg Gerwitz-[Don’t leave me] Chicago PD
Summary: You are Hank Voights daughter, you are a firefighter but you sometimes help your Dad with paperwork and anything he needs at the district. You quickly became close with Mouse. So one day you decided to go tell him how you feel. But that’s the day you thought your life would change forever.
Tumblr media
Your POV
“Trudy oh my it’s busy in here” I said. “Seriously a firefighter gets first” some guy said. “Make it quick kid this place is nuts” Trudy said. “Just here to talk to Mouse before shift” I said. “Well look who it is” Mouse said.
“Look this guy almost ran me over” this lady said. “The crime should really be that pantsuit combo” I said. “Trudy I just need you to sign this” Mouse said. “One second Mouse” Trudy said. “Excuse me my daughter she’s been missing for months” this guy said.
“Well did you file all the proper paperwork” Trudy asked. “Yes they sent me here to you guys” he said. “Mouse when you have a moment” I said he looked at me. “Yeah but Trudy it’s really important” Mouse said.
All the sudden the guy took Mouse hostage and held him at gunpoint. Sean stood in front of me pointing a gun at the guy.
“Y/N just stay behind me ok” Sean said. “Put the gun down” Trudy yelled. “You gonna listen to me now” he said. Everyone cleared out as my Dad came downstairs.
“You drop that gun or we drop you” Kim yelled. “Nobody is dropping anyone” Dad said. “Sarg I got a shot” Sean said. “Whoa whoa whoa” Mouse said. As they backed up to the office.
“Whatever this is we can work it out” Dad said. “I’ve tried” he yelled. “We can help you” I said stepping closer with my hands up. “Y/N just stay there” Mouse said.
“We will help but if you don’t hold up your end we will drop you” Dad said. He went into the office still holding Mouse at gunpoint. “It’s alright were good” Mouse said.
“Upstairs” Dad said. “But Dad I” I said getting teary eyed. I was worried about Greg. I don’t know what I’d do without him. “It’s alright were cool Y/N ok” Mouse said shutting the door.
We all went upstairs. To try to make a plan. I called off of shift.
“You shouldn’t be here” Dad said. “What are you doing to help him besides pointing multiple guns at his face” I said. “Respectfully go to work” Dad said. “No I’m not going to work until I know that he’s ok” I said teary eyed.
“Watch her” Dad said to Jay.
Mouses POV
“Who was that girl out there” Jeff asked. “The lady cop” I said. “No that firefighter Voight I think” he said pointing the gun at me.
Tumblr media
“Oh Y/N” I said with a smile. “Yeah her she your girlfriend or something” Jeff asked. “Thought we weren’t asking each other those questions” I said. “Come on” Jeff said.
“Ummm..she’s the Sargents daughter you know Y/N she’s just perfect” I said. “So what best friends” he asked. “Yeah I mean I’m terrified of her Dad but she’s the complete opposite” I said smiling.
“You know you should tell her” Jeff said. “Tell her what exactly” I said looking directly at him. “Come on man it’s obvious the way you look at her and how nervous you are” Jeff said.
“Out of everyone out there you reassured her that you were ok so I’m assuming that you” Jeff said. “Thing is I don’t know” I said.
Your POV
“We are sending the girl” Jay said. “Alright” I said. “Hey he’ll be ok” Jay said. “I just I care about him so much” I said teary eyed. Jay hugged me tightly. “It’s all gonna work” Jay said.
A little while later Mouse walked up the stairs. I got up and ran over and hugged him.
“It’s alright hey” he whispered in my ear. “I got so worried” I said. “I’m ok” he said kissing my cheek. “We will be back” Dad said. “Alright” I said. “Are you ok” Mouse said. “I” I said he wiped my tears. “I’m alright he wasn’t gonna” Mouse said.
I stayed to help them solve the case. I walked downstairs to find Mouse and Jay in the office area that Mouse worked out of. They were having a drink. I gave Jay a look.
“Alright Mouse I’ll see you tomorrow bye Y/N” Jay said. “Thought you would’ve went to shift by now” Mouse said. “Doesn’t start for an hour” I said. “So you come to hang out with me” Mouse said. “You uh scared me today” I said sitting on the desk.
“It was under control” Mouse said. “But I kept thinking what if it had gone south Greg” I said. “It didn’t” Mouse said. “I just sat upstairs wondering what would’ve happened if he.. and I kept thinking to myself all the things I should’ve said” I said.
“What things” Mouse said looking at me with his beautiful blue eyes. “I just.. don’t know what I’d do without you and truthfully I feel like with you I can be myself” I said. “But the truth is I don’t wanna be just friends Mouse” I said standing up.
Tumblr media
“Then what do you want” Mouse asked. “I want you” I said he smiled. “Hmm” Mouse said. “Greg I’m not kidding around I’m..
I began to say he kissed me. I circled my arms around his neck and kissed him. Everything in that moment was so perfect.
“I love you” Mouse said cupping my cheek I blushed. “I love you more” I said he kissed my head. “And I want you too I don’t care what your Dad thinks” he said hugging me tightly. I felt so safe in his arms. And after today I needed that.
“I don’t care either” I said. “So I guess that makes us boyfriend and girlfriend huh” Mouse said. “I guess it does” I said. “I can take you home if you want me to” Mouse said. “I’ll drive you” I said grabbing my keys. “Hey it was one” Mouse said grabbing his stuff.
“Greg I’m driving” I said. “Alright I won’t turn down the offer” Mouse said. We walked back upstairs through the hallway holding hands. My Dad walked by. “Treat her well Mouse” he said walking past us I smiled.
“Well I guess he’s cool with us” I said. “I’m so glad I was scared he’d end up saying no” Mouse said. “Maybe he also sees how amazing you are” I said walking out to my car.
Later..
“You should just stay here” Mouse said playing with my hair. “I’d love to but people need me” I said. “You could just skip like one shift” Mouse said. “I’ll be back in like eight hours” I said sitting up.
“Then I guess I owe you a real date” Mouse said kissing me. “You definitely do” I said. “Alright well you be safe” Mouse said. “I will” I said kissing him. “I love you” Mouse said. “I love you more” I said.

Here's to the guy who's been there the whole time, but sometimes he's not easy to spot, and is actually really handsome, and I might have added longer eyelashes to his drawing, and he looks like an angel of war now...❤

Fun Times With The Mortar Boys And The Radioman (Skip Muck, Donald Malarkey, Alex Penkala, and George Luz x Reader (Platonic))
2nd HBO War 21 Secret Santa gift for @how-are-those-nuts-sarge
Merry Christmas: The Sequel!
This was the second prompt:
2. Anything lighthearted with our Easy boys! Doesn't have to be shippy or anything, could include an OC or could not, just something that showcases them having a good time with each other.
You said you liked the mortar squad and Luz, and they’re a good source of lighthearted things and entertainment, so I decided to go with them.
Planned for this to be another female reader kind of based off of me, but I think it can be read as either male or gender neutral as well because I wasn’t super descriptive and didn’t ship anyone. It’s purely platonic.
Word count: ~2.8k (Wow! Look who got a lot carried away! And this was the incoherent and disjointed one!)
Warnings: playful abuse of friends (hitting people in the arm a lot)
Key: Y/N = Your Name, Y/N/N = Your Nickname
Disclaimer: I do not own Band of Brothers. I do not own any of the characters from Band of Brothers that are depicted. I do not own any scenes from Band of Brothers that are depicted (sometimes verbatim from the episode/script). I am not claiming to own any of these things. All credits go to the appropriate people such as executive producers, actors, writers, directors, script editors, etc.
P.S.: sorry if the writing seems inconsistent (lol, it’s so choppy and segmented, none of these scenes are done?) or just bad, I didn’t really plan this out (maybe I should have) and I usually write in a free flowing style where I just write whatever comes to me, and it sometimes ends up not making sense, sorry for OOC characters, as well. Also, this was supposed to span several locations and episodes, but...I kinda stalled at the end when I tried to incorporate Germany (Oklahoma) and Austria (Baseball), sorry and ended up deleting the little bit I had for Germany and jumped from Bastogne right to Austria.
Hope you enjoy!

When there was a lull after some fighting in Carentan (idk), it was pretty boring. The officers were still trying to decide what the best next course of action was (idk). So the enlisted bided their time anyway they could. You wandered around for a bit looking for really anything to do before you stumbled upon the mortar boys. Alex spotted you first and waved at you. Skip looked at who he was waving to and enthusiastically waved you over when he saw you. You smiled and shook your head as you joined your friends. Don greeted you as you sat down.
“How ya doin’? I feel like we haven’t seen you since we got in the planes and jumped. How was your jump and landing?” Skip asked you.
You chuckled.
“How was anybody’s landing? Crappy. I’m tired, I’m sore, and I’m hungry.”
Alex handed you the cheese to try.
You eyed it suspiciously before eating a little bit of it. It wasn’t bad. But it wasn’t great.
“Whaddya think? Horrible, right?”
“It’s not that bad. It’s not great either and I will not be eating anymore of it, thank you very much.”
“Have you guys heard about Lieutenant Speirs?” Skip asked.
“Yeah? What about him?” You asked, wondering where this was going.
“Apparently he killed some German POWs a few days back. And he shot one of his own men for disobeying orders!” Alex exclaimed.
You exaggerated a gasp.
“What if he does that to us?”
Skip went wide-eyed.
“Don’t even joke about that!”
You leaned over and grabbed the cigarette behind Skip’s ear. He tried to stop you, but you just slapped his hand away.
“Relax, Skip, he’s not gonna do that to any of us. I’m sure those stories aren’t even true.”
“Oh, they’re true.”
“How do you know?”
“I just do.”
“You can’t know that they’re true.”
“But I do.”
You flicked the cigarette at him and it hit him in the face.
He tore up some grass and threw it at you. Then he did the same to Alex.
“Hey! What’d I do?”
“You were there.”
Alex scoffed, tore up some grass and threw the handful right back at Skip, who repeated the action. Soon, the two were just sitting there aggressively throwing grass at each other until there was no more.

The pub in Aldbourne was bristling with activity. Skip had practically begged you to come. You scanned the pub before you spotted your friends. George was the first among the group to spot you as you approached and a huge smile spread across his face.
“Hey! Skip said he wouldn’t leave you alone yesterday and today until you said you’d come. Glad to see you actually decided to come and not bail.”
You punched him in the arm not only for the comment, but also to get him to move, which he did.
“Hey! You made it!” Skip beamed.
“Well, yeah, you only bothered me all day yesterday and pretty much begged me to come. I figured it’d be rude not to.”
“Well you never go anywhere. And Alex bet me I couldn’t get you to come.”
You hit Skip in the arm. He rubbed it.
“Ow! What was that for for?!”
“For being rude.”
I hit Alex in the arm as well.
“What’d I do?”
“You made the bet. You’re just as responsible as him for me being here.”
“Wait, you don’t wanna be here?” Don asked, sounding disappointed and almost personally offended. “I thought we were having a good time.”
“We weren’t!” Skip, Alex, and George all decided to say at the same time.
“Well I was, anyway.”
“Yeah, that’s cause you didn’t get hit.”
“That’s cause I’m the favorite.”
George scoffed.
“You are not,” then he thought for a second and turned to you, “is he?”
You just smirked and left to order a drink at the bar.
“Is he?!” Alex shouted after you.
You just laughed back at them as you reached the bar and ordered your drink.
Once you had received your drink, you made your way back to the group.
“Malark isn’t actually your favorite, is he?” Alex asked you.
Instead of answering him, you took a long gulp of your drink. You had downed about half of it before you stopped.
He was still looking at you expectantly.
“I’m sorry, what was your question?”
“Is Mal your favorite?!” Skip asked, exasperated.
“Maybe,” you winked as you took another drink.
“You’re gonna get drunk real quick if you keep at it like that.” George told you.
“I don’t really see how that’s any of your business, Georgie.”
“Oh no. You’re already drunk. And it is my business when I have to help you back to your billet.”
“Oh, cool it, George. I am not already drunk. I haven’t even had a full glass yet. I’m not a lightweight (A/N: lol, sorry if you are if you’re old enough to drink). But it’s nice of you to be so concerned about me.”
“Hey, what are friends for? Although I think I do that more often than Don, so I don’t know why he’s your favorite.”
You groaned.
“Oh, would you knock that off? Once. You had to take me home once. And only once. No one else here has had any other opportunity to do it.”
“Well since I did do it that one time, shouldn’t I be your favorite? All Don does is ask you for money for drinks!”
“Hey!”
“He doesn’t do it that often, George.”
“And I’m gonna pay you back.”
“I know, Don. But you really don’t have to.”
“Why shouldn’t he?! And when are you going to, huh, Don?”
“When I have the money.”
“And when’s that gonna be?”
“When I do. Look, why are you so concerned about it? It’s none of your business!”
“I’m just trying to figure out why Y/N/N likes you so much.”
“You ever think that maybe it’s because we’re friends?”
“We are all friends, Don!”
“Well, Y/N likes me the best.”
“Does not.”
“Does too!”
“Ok, guys! You are acting like kids! Ok, cool it! I like all of you equally!”
“Why’d you imply that you liked Don best, then?”
“Oh my g-it was a joke, George! A joke! You know what a joke is, don’t you?”
“I don’t actually. Please explain.”
You hit him in the arm again lightly.
Don laughed at him.
You then hit him.
“Finally,” Skip sighed, “boy wonder gets hit!”
You groaned and downed the rest of your drink before going to order another.

You sat next to George for the movie. Which was a huge mistake. He wouldn’t shut up. Lip and Toye kept turning around to tell him to shut up.
“Y/N, could you please tell Luz to shut the hell up?” Toye turned around asked me.
“He wouldn’t listen to you. What makes you think he’ll listen to me?”
“He likes you better than he likes me.”
“Debatable.”
George was so wrapped up in supplying commentary for the movie he’d seen 13 times that he hadn’t even heard the two of you.
Before you could say anything to George, someone tapped your shoulder. You turned around to find that it was Don.
“What?”
“Here’s the 400 dollars I owe you in drinks, finally. Sorry it took so long.”
“You don’t have to pay me back, Don, I already told you that.”
“But I feel really bad. Here, take it. Please.”
“Where’d you get 400 dollars anyway?” You asked as you reluctantly took it.
“I won a crap ton of cash in a game of craps.”
“Really? How much?”
“I’m not telling you how much.”
“Why not?”
“You’ll just come for me to money, then.”
“Did you not just witness me refuse to take money from you to pay me back for the money I gave you?”
Don shrugged sheepishly.
“Where are ya gonna keep it?” you asked out of sheer curiosity.
“I’m not gonna tell you that.”
“Why not?”
“It’s confidential. What if you try to steal it?”
“You’re not stupid enough to keep it under your pillow, Don. You’re gonna keep it somewhere no one else has access to. So I couldn’t steal it even if I tried. Which I wouldn’t. Again, I tried to refuse to take money you were offering me.”
“I guess that’s true.”
George elbowed you.
“What?”
“This is my favorite part.”
“I thought every part was your favorite part.”
“True. But this is really my favorite.”
“Yeah. Sure it is.”
“Got a penny?”
You scoffed.
“What?”
“Why is this your favorite part?”
“It’s the way she says it. Got. A. Penny?”
Lip turned around.
“Hey, I thought you were supposed to be keeping him quiet.”
You shrugged.
“Sorry.”

Freezing your bum off in the Ardennes wasn’t exactly what you had had in mind for Christmastime 1944...but...here you were. Here you all were. And here is where you had been for weeks. The morale getting sucked out of you faster than a vacuum sucks up a sock...or anything for that matter if it’s a really good high powered vacuum. Even the Company funnyman...I’m sorry...radioman...well...both...wasn’t at his peak of comedy in this godforsaken hellscape. And that was somewhat...concerning...to say the least to the rest of the company. You had also noticed that some other jokesters in the company (Malarkey, Muck and Penkala) had waned in their hysterics as well. You were concerned about all of them. You tried your best to joke with them, but all you could manage were weak jokes, nothing compared to any of them, and you got weak smiles and laughs in return. At last some genuine lightheartedness came in a foxhole one evening after a rather strange warning from Compton (although you all knew what had prompted it).
“I’m serious,” Buck said after you all had chuckled after he told you not to do anything stupid.
“Sure thing, Buck, nothing stupid. We got it, right?”
“We got it,” you affirmed.
“All right, George?”
“Yeah. Nothing stupid, Buck”
“Yeah.”
“"Don't do anything stupid"? Who the hell's he talking to?” Alex asked.
“Bunch of morons who volunteered to jump out of a perfectly good airplane. Can you get any more stupid than that?” Skip replied.
“Probably not.” you chuckled.
“Right.”
“I swum across the Niagara once,” Skip stated
“Yeah.”
“I swear. On a bet.”
“What, in a barrel?” George asked
“No. I didn't go over the Falls, George. I swam across the river. Ten miles up from the Falls. I tell you, that current is damn strong. Yeah. Must have carried me two miles downstream before I got across. But, I got across. Now, personally, I didn't think it was all that stupid but...my mom, my sister, Ruth...they gave me all kinds of hell.”
“Yeah, I bet, Muck.”
“So did Faye.”
“Sweet Faye Tanner.”
You hit him in the arm.
“Shut it, George.”
“Well, they had a point. You're an idiot.”
“Oh, come on! It’s not like any of you never did anything stupid!”
George, Alex, and Don all sheepishly groaned in agreement.
“Exactly. I mean, Don, you jumped off a roof!”
“Look, I was a trendsetter, alright! I was holding a beach umbrella and I thought I’d float on down to the ground, ok?! And look at what we’re doing! We’re jumping out of planes with parachutes and…for the most part…landing safely. Which I did as well at the time, for the most part, apart from some minor injuries.”
“Alright. Alright. You’ve made your point. Hey, Y/N/N, you ever do anything stupid?”
You shrugged.
“Probably.”
“You wanna share with the class?”
“Not really.”
“Aw, come on! We’ve all shared!”
“No, Skip, you shared yours and Don’s. Don didn’t exactly volunteer his.”
Skip merely shrugged. They all were still looking at you expectantly.
You sighed after a minute.
“Fine.”
They all smiled gleefully.
“When I was about three, I stepped off a merry-go-round without telling the person moving it that I wanted to get off. I face planted into the ground and scratched up my face real bad.”
“Is that why it is the way it is?” George asked.
You hit him in the arm.
“That’s it?” Skip asked.
“That’s a stupid thing I’ve done that I told you about, yes.”
“But that was kind of lame.”
You scoffed.
“How so?”
“You were only three. Three-year-olds do stupid things. It’s in their nature.”
“It’s human nature to do stupid things.”
“Yeah, but when you’re three, there’s a higher chance. You don’t know any better.”
“I think I was old enough to know to tell the person to stop it before I tried stepping off of a fast moving object.”
“Maybe you thought it’d be easier,” Don suggested.
“I honestly don’t know what I was thinking at the time. It was so long ago.”
“You gotta tell us another one.”
“Why? None of you did!”
“None of us was three.”
“Don, how old were you when you jumped off of the roof.”
“I think about twelve.”
“See?! More than old enough to know that was a bad idea. That’s what makes it stupid! But a three year old doesn’t know anything. You gotta pick another one.”
You groaned.
“Ok, fine. When I was in high school, someone bet me that I couldn’t chug whatever amount of milk that it was, and it was a lot. I should’ve just blown them off and not taken the stupid bet. But I was egged on by spectators. So I chugged, I don’t even know how much milk, and I had to keep it down, that was part of the bet. And...well...I couldn’t keep it down. And I threw up all over my crush.”
“Ooh. That’s not good.”
“No. It wasn’t. They wouldn’t even look at me the rest of the year.”
“Yeah. That was stupid.”
You sighed with relief.
“Thank you.”

Even more relaxation than Germany came when the war ended and the company was put on occupation duty in Austria. As a celebration of the one year anniversary of D-Day, you all decided to hold a friendly game of baseball. You weren’t the biggest fan of baseball and were not confident in your ability to play it, but George begged you. So, you reluctantly agreed to participate.
You weren’t very good at first. You kept striking out. And one time you managed to hit it, but it didn’t go very far and the ball easily got to first base before you.
After a string of outs, you began to become disheartened.
While in the outfield one inning, George wandered over to you.
“What’s wrong, Mopey?”
“I suck at this game. I don’t even know why I let you convince me to play. I never should have. I’m making our team lose.”
“Who cares?”
“Uh, the team?”
“No, they don’t. Do you hear anyone complaining? We’re just all having fun, Y/N/N. No one cares who wins or looses or who plays well or who doesn’t.”
“Really?”
“Yes!”
“Luz! Get back to your position!” Someone from your team yelled at him.
George rolled his eyes dramatically before moving back into his designated position.
When your team got to bat again, despite George’s comforting words, you were anxious. You were worried you’d strike out again. George was behind you and noticed this. He put his on your shoulder, which startled you out of your thoughts.
“Sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you. You have nothing to be afraid of, alright? You’re gonna do great!”
“Thanks, George.”
You were up next to bat.
You struck out the first two times despite your best effort. George gave you a reassuring thumbs up.
You took a deep breath and readied yourself before the third throw.
There was a loud *thack* as you swung the bat and it hit the ball. You were in disbelief for a second.
“Run, Y/N/N, run!”
So, you did. And it was a home run, too, so you kept running all the way around the bases to home. The boys on your team and the other team cheered as you did. The boys in the outfield gave you high-fives as you passed them.
George hugged you when you got back to home.
“Great job! See?! I told you you could do it!”
“Thanks, George.”
Major Winters made you gather around him at that point. He told you all that the war was over.
You finished your game of baseball and although your team didn’t win, George’s words and the fact that the war was over helped you not to care too much about that. All you cared about was that you got to spend time with your friends.
