No you guys don't understand. I may have ranted about this fic before but I'm fucking doing it again. Knowledge is Power (But Love Won't Hurt) by SupposedToBeWriting has fixed me. Trauma? Gone. I'm gonna call my therapist and tell them no need for any more sessions because I've found the answer. And that answer is Jonathan "single father to autistic little girl" Sims. Yeah you heard me right. Get ready for a 31 chapter, 156K words slow burn wherein Martin Kartin Blackwood dresses like the straightest gay man at the family barbecue, Finding Nemo is a really emotional plot point and Gerry Keay and Martin bond over Mommy Issues. Get your "Jon Is The Most Stressed Man Ever" fix here. It's got everything that tma is too cowardly to do - healthy communication, trans Jon and Martin and aroace Gerry. Please go read it, I promise it will change your fucking life.

I thought i had followed you already but im stupid as fuck and didnt. I simply must ask you for whatever you have in your head related to your drawtectives tma crossover. We are on a brainwave.
I thought i was alone in here... until i found u my sister
Ok most of what I have is Jancy x Gertrude and when I try to list headcanons for them I wind up just writing a half baked fic so I'll leave that in the trunk until I can full bake the fic
This Magnus institute, London is now the Bagnus Institute, Dondon. I could list a bunch of places in Breat Gritain but I'll leave it at Snengland Snotland and Snales
Phelix being in an animatronic and the stable of imagination were done with Leitners. The Celestial Spear connecting to Gareville was a Spiral ritual. Everything else is just like that, the game that Villainius is from, wild trains, Grandma compelling Sam Ug that one time, that's just what it be like
The Stranger looooooves animatronics. The Hunt is extremely powerful up in the Northern Tribes. The End hates Eugene with a passion
Some statement givers at the Bagnus Institute, Dondon: Edd Edguy, Hugh Janimal, Barry Dalive, Noah Naround, Ican Seayew, Kat Astrophe, Kent C Schitt, Tara Ntula, Ida Noyu, Wanda Eetiew, Jason Mighpray, Phil Thee, Lotta Merderz, and Oliver Twist
The head of the Bagnus Institute isn't Elias. It's Luke Ing.
York is halfway an Avatar of the Hunt but simply too distractable and indestructable to fully succumb. Might be immune to Jared Hopworth. The Highforge family is a cult, kinda like the Lukas family, idk for what entity. Rosé is lowkey serving the Dark but don't worry about it
Jancy is very Eye-influenced; she doesn't like it but she's too tired to hate it. She's an occasional ally to Gertrude, with her detecting skills and such. Maybe Gertrude would have hired Jancy to prove Gerry Keay didn't kill his mom? Idk
Eugene knows a lot of the big names, he's arm's length with the Lukases, Simon Fairchild, Rayner and the Divine Host, Luke Ing. He's also done some buying and selling with Leitner and Salesa
Ogalvy has like 11 Fears trying to court him. You know how it is
Gertrude would hate the Drawtectives for their goofy and fun loving nature. Jonathan Sims trying to go through a conversation with them would be the funniest thing in history
Tim, Basira, Melanie and Georgie would have disliked them a normal amount. Martin and Sasha would have been able to hang out with them. Salesa would have had a great time with them
Gerry would have gotten along great with the drawtectives. He'd talk with Rosé about alt fashion, Grandma would match him in weirdgirl vibes, York would think he looks scrawney and pathetic but then watch Gerry demonstrate strength somehoe and BOOM instant besties
Anyway yeah that's my things for now

mag 62 - first edition
i had legit forgotten this statement existed, which is sad because it's so good! i love how fucked up the delano-keay family is, and this gives us a lot of background into future details, primarily ones giveen in mag 111 and mag 154 (which is one of my two favourite episodes in the entire podcast btw) so listening to this like it was the first time but with all the context was interesting
i particularly like how long of a line of fucked-up-ness the keays have. mary's mother worked for the institute, and despite how she seems to resent it to some degree she still bears pride in her heritage and long line of being part of this world. she's a hypocrite, in many ways quite similar to gertrude despite their distaste for each other
there is also the thing about how much pride she takes in being supposedly unaligned, yet she's actually pretty clearly eye. her entire family is, it seems, considering her mother, son, and husband all work at or closely to the institute. she herself comments on elias' reluctance to get involved in the dirt yet states than she prefers watching death rather than killing
i think mary also plays into tma's overall themes of power very well. she's attracted to the power and pride that comes with being involved with the fears. that might be why the skin book attracts her despite her lack of interest in the end. even after death she can still control, torture, and extort knowledge from these souls
also - eric mention! love him, looking forward to when we meet him in, like, ninety episodes

Can you imagine uncle Gerry?
First of all rich family friends so cancer in remission or even treated.
Secondly Gerry is atleast Eye aligned so he'll know the secret identity which would save Tim a lot of problems.
Thirdly the irony of Gerard Keay no.1 hater of Jurgen Leitner because of mommy issues getting along with Janet Drake daughter of Jurgen Leitner and guardian of Tim Drake grandson of Jurgen Leitner (both of whom are also no.1 haters of Jurgen Leitner because of daddy issues and intergenerational trauma).
Fourthly imagine Dick and Bruce being like, "ok how do we tell Tim that his beloved uncle allegedly skinned his own mother alive?" (In case Tim didnt create a fake identity for Gerry).
Fifthly i think Gerry would have killed Joker, not even for anything personal, maybe he saw an avatar of desolation and it was on sight? Maybe he was trying to get rid of a Leitner and accidentally killed Joker with it? Maybe he kinda missed a Leitner and Joker got his hands on it which ended up killing him? All i know is Gerry probably doesnt even know who Joker is, he just sorta accidentally got him killed (Jason comes back and he's like, "well it is shitty that Bruce replaced me, but atleast he killed the Joker." And Tim is like "uhhhh actually")
Oh my FUCKING GOD YOU ARE A GENIUS
you know i have to write this now right? RIGHT??? God. I know what im doing in my downtime at work tomorrow. Holy fuck
Uncle Gerry who chooses to leave the Magnus Institute and is adopted by the daughter of his hated (one sided) enemy. He's brought back home to Gotham and falls in love with it. He's introduced to Tim as his uncle Gerry, and Tim, who thinks Gerry is the SHIT goes hell yes. Uncle Gerry lemme show you all of my cool stuff. And gerry is awkward at first bc hes like uhhhh weird small (11 year old) child who wants him to paint his nails black too. There is a goth child tim phase is what im saying. His cancer is also immediately caught and treated, and he recovers
Anyway after the accident where janet dies and jack is in a coma, he finds out that theyve put him down as tims guardian. And hes like. Uhhhhhhhhh. Tim is distraught but he loves gerry even though he keeps trying to convince him to take up a safer hobby than being robin. It does not work, so gerry basically activates his 'baby monitor' (using the eye). Both bruce and dick are like. Tim. Tim. Why does your guardian have a criminal record of -checks documents- SKINNING HIS MOTHER
Tim points out the trial fell apart bc of a lack of evidence and bruce is going insane bc there was evidence!!! There was absolutely so much evidence!!!!!! But tim is like. Nah. Gerry wouldnt do that. Hes cool.
And YES HE WOULD KILL THE JOKER ACCIDENTALLY hed be held up or something bc ha ha funny goth man and gerry, channeling his inner elias, commits pipe murder. Either that or the eye is like hey you wanna do something funny? unscrew this lightbulb. So he does. And later when the joker holds up the store or something an electric failure causes the bulb to explode and a shard lodges itself into the jokers brainstem.

oh! sorry, they're the letters from the character building questions? I think for numbers they're: 1, 4, 5, 11, 13, 17, 24, 26?
OH! ...OH I SEE.
Oh that is WEIRD they are different on my tumblr/blog view. WILD. Okay! Apologies!
Leeet's get those answered!
1 (A) What’s the lie your character says most often? "Edgar Locke, a pleasure to meet you." - He isn't Lock, and it is not a pleasure. He, in fact, is very inconvenienced by this entire encounter and would like to go back to doing things he cares about.
4 (D) What’s a hobby they used to have that they miss? I legitimately can't think of one. Keays is the type of person who, if they aren't working they aren't happy. I don't think he HAS or HAD any hobbies that lasted into adulthood.
5 (E) Can they cry on command? If so, what do they think about to make it happen? Nope. Hell I don't think the man can cry period.
11 (K) If someone was impersonating them, what would friends / family ask or do to tell the difference? This is, hilariously, spoilers for a game I'm planning. :D But to put one of the more obvious ones out there: He sees his former pet (Matthias) free or not at his side? Priority is to now get his favorite source of blood back. Anything else? That ain't Keays.
15 (O) What’s the most obvious difference between their behavior at home, at work, at school, with friends, and when they’re alone? He's professional Busy Business Man in public. Too important for everything but also sensible and intelligent. Is, in fact, willing to offer something nice if he thinks it will help sway a business deal.
Privately though? Man is horrid. Delights in pain, and is violent and ruthless in ways most people blanche just thinking about. Sadist through and through, and such a power hungry asshole like, damn. Loves to just hold power over people.
Something something tyrant
17 (Q) What do they notice first in the mirror versus what most people first notice looking at them? Vampire man sees his suit. And that's all he sees. (Ba-dum-tsh)
24 (X) Did they take a cookie from the cookie jar? What kind of cookie was it? Yes and it was dipped in gold leaf, the fuck.
26 (Z) How would they respond to being fired by a good boss? Outwardly? Professional! Thank them for the opportunity. Good handshake. Business card. Might even send a fuckin' 'thank you' package if he's feeling rather generous.
But hey maybe in a month or so that boss winds up missing and oh what a shame. Pity. He rather liked them.

(1/6) Hello! I'm so glad to have found your tumblr! Somehow I missed it all this while lol. I just wanted to say thank you thank you thank you for all your fics, every single one. They all really mean a lot to me. You really are one of my favorite authors on the internet. I always know whatever fic you choose to write is going to somehow, inevitably, make me cry whatever the fandom.
I'm such a big fan of your writing! Expecially I love the tragedy of Gerry and Jon's relationship in nhthcth, the way Jack cares so very deeply for a son he doesn't even know is alive and feels he has horribly failed, and absolutely love the way you wrote Matt Murdock's view on the world in his one shot. Every one of your fics are so very very wonderful. I love your writing style (especially the one you chose to use for the Jack fic oh my goodness) and the way you incorporate things you know from your real life (specifically all the stuff about american law) to its fullest extent in your work. You have such a way with words, with conveying emotions, with
articulating your points. I love the way you write love, and the way you write tragedy. I love the way you write moral dilemmas and all the different ways different people see the world. I'm trying to avoid saying any more specifics (for this entire extremely long message (though you might have noticed I failed a tad bit earlier lol)) because otherwise I'd be here all day, but yeah. Man I love your writing. I'm very sorry for word vomiting all over your inbox lol. I just want to somehow tell you about even a fraction of how much your writing has impacted my life. I'm really thankful for everything you write. If you have any original fiction (or plans for any original fiction) please tell me I would love to know!! I would gladly spend all my money on it lol. Also, have to say, discovering that you go by Syn is about to revolutionize the thepolysyndetonaddictsupportgeoup fan club me and my friends have. Or at the very least cut our word count way down lol. Hope you're having a good day <3 Thank you again!!!
Hi! I just copied your other messages over into one big message.
Thank you for your message--it really means a lot to me that that you think so highly of my works.
I think I really love a kind of tragic love, and it leaks through in my works. You have Jon and Gerry, and you have Jack and Matt. And in all respects, they're loves that have sort of been dismissed. Jon and Gerry grew up as the thing that other people sacrificed. Everyone was willing to let them bear the cost of life and brutality. They're dismissed at every turn as trouble makers, as worthless, as liars, as murderers--but they're still preserving in love for each other. In the same way, Jack spends his life dismissed as another fuck up in the system, struggling to get anyone to just care about his little blind boy who's probably been dead for twenty years. And no one does. No one ever really looked for Matt. Except for Jack. The loves are tragic from their loss, but it's a kind of lonely loss. Like--someone dies young and tragically, and their family is on the news or on a crime documentary or whatever, and it's all about how this person lit up whatever room they were in. Candles on the sidewalk, the world grieves their loss. Gerry and Jon only really mattered to each other. The police treated the disappearance of Gerard Keay as a sort of "good riddance." Whereas Matt had the people close to him mourning him, but the rest of the world treated it like he was already dead. Wrote him off, didn't look, no grand police search for Matty Murdock. So you have this act of mourning that's sort of happening in the presence of people who don't even see the real value of the loss or love in the first place.
And it's interesting, because those were the loves that ended up defining the world. Jon and Gerry, whatever happened, had a love that changed the world while trapped in a web of manipulation. And the love between Jack and Matt ended up to be world-shaking itself--and it came from a poor deadbeat boxer of a dad, and a blind kid who should have been dead decades ago.
I dunno, the idea of this love that keeps its hooks in you even after its gone compels me. i write a lot of sad shit and i feel like it's usually sad because it once was happy.
Jack in toy rosaries and Matt in glaze defects have probably some of my favorite characters to write from so far. probably the only one who can really compete is peter in porcelain chips. like, both of their minds were so interesting? Jack's kind of felt like an impressionist painting to write. like--i dunno, he's blurry? everything's framed through the lens of emotions--mostly his regret and his love. he's also very old-school catholic. Like, i was raised hella catholic and you have these really old school catholics who are really traditional and literalist in their understanding of scripture and teachings. So you have Jack, who's got these really traditional ideas of forgiveness and the faith and the second coming, and it's washed through with someone whose life experiences have given him every single reason to distance himself from those teachings. So he's still got them at the base of how he thinks, but it's in direct conflict with what he feels spiritually, and it makes for this very messy, emotional, inexact portrayal of a psyche.
Matt, meanwhile, always felt more precise, if that makes sense. He's got all of these pillars and boundaries in his mind. like, you have buck v bell as a really formative experience for him, and you have this biblical idea of the sacrificial lamb, where he has always understood himself to be the one whose blood the world is willing to paint a door with, and it almost sets up these little checkpoints in his mind that he forces his own emotions to pass through. With Jack, he's this really messy stained glass window of guilt and love and everything's filtered through that tint. Matt's meanwhile constantly taking his own emotions and stopping them at these little borders of life experience and forcing them to a halt. It's almost an inverse of his father's approach.
And so you end up with someone who loves intensely, just like Jack, but it's something he's almost keeping in check from himself. you have all of these moments with Foggy, where Matt's wanting to give into his emotional instinct, and then--bam, it hits a checkpoint. and that's balanced with his constant daydreams of captain america, who acts as a sort of revelation to himself as to what Matt really wants in each stage of his life.
Like, you have him when he's little, and lonely, and afraid, and that little Matt always turns Captain America away, because he's trying to convince himself that he would turn Captain America away. He's trying to convince himself that he can protect himself from the government soldier here to use him. Because, at the end of the day, he's nine years old, and he's too afraid to tell his dad about what's happened to him, let alone anyone else. He's constantly battling this desire to be helped with his fear of being used, and he's trying to convince himself that he's going to be smarter, be clever enough, be able to see the trick ahead of time and defend himself.
And then, of course, Stick happens, and matt's internal desires change too. he had his captain america moment, and he failed it. in his mind, he let himself get tricked. it's his fault. So now he doesn't want to prove that he can protect himself--it's too tainted by failure. He wants to know that it was okay that he failed. so he creates a captain america that failed in the same way he did, who was hurt just like him, and maybe his mistake is a little bit less damning.
then, captain america is alive, and matt's older, and he's got karen and foggy but he's fucked up his life with all the secrets he kept. he doesn't really need someone to absolve him of stick anymore. he just needs someone to understand his fear, and about why he kept the secrets that he did. because he still doesn't have that. karen and foggy love him, but they still don't understand the fear he lived with all those years. he regrets hurting them, and the why doesn't change the fact that he did hurt them, but a part of him is still desperate for someone who knows what it means to be the carrie buck in buck v bell.
and then you finally get the captain america who just sits with matt on a stoop, who understands, because while matt has family now, while he isn't as lonely or afraid, and while he doesn't quite need anything from captain america the way he once did, a part of him can't quite let go of the fact that he's always wanted someone who understood. he's the one coming to captain america now, instead of the other way around--he doesn't want to be saved, so to speak. he doesn't need to be, and maybe captain america doesn't need to be either. he just wants someone who knows what it's like, and maybe captain america wants that too. and he's finally recovered enough from stick where he can make the overture instead of someone else, so he makes the approach to captain america's stoop instead of the other way around. and maybe both of them can be a little less alone.
i dunno, jack and matt are such fun characters to write. they're both so intensely emotional, but jack's very unbridled in his emotions, very messy, and you have matt who's constantly trying to keep himself in check and his emotions almost have to sneak through. i'm glad you liked them.
I'm a really really big law nerd and i feel like that leaks through like. a lot. not just with the fact that i keep insisting on writing about the supreme court, but also just because so much of law is about how you can get to two entirely different results based on how you frame an issue. and i think that sort of leaks into how i think about character's mindsets. everyone has values that they're weighing more heavily than other's, and it results in people coming to what they think is the obvious solution and what other people think is absolutely fucking insane. I could write an essay on how foggy's the platonic ideal of a lawyer's ethical system, and how matt's got two ethical systems at war within himself--a very catholic, lawyer-esque one, and a consequentialist one created by his life experiences that's directly at odds with his faith and profession. it makes for a lot of fun writing.
I do have original fiction! none of it is published, haven't made any attempts to get it published. Maybe one day. I'd love to be a writer, just got a ways to go first. thank you for your really kind message! i wish you the best!
also--the what

MAG004, Page Turner
Case #0132806, Dominic Swain Release date: 30 March 2016 First listen: 13th Oct 2020, still on the morning feed duty.
The first instance of Jonny picking on the theatre kids, the first mention of our Gerard, and the first time I heard the name ‘Leitner’.
- The theatre industry is just ripe for the taking for some of The Entities: the punishing scheduled, the costumes and make up, the sets, the props, the shadowy, dark, secret places of a theatre building, the fleetingness of a pay cheque, the faceless audiences, the politics, the aging out of roles... OK, at one point in season 5 I was jokingly indignant for Jonny ‘coming for the theatre kids’, but 1) I was reminded that Jonny himself is very much a theatre kid and 2) it’s kind of a gold mine to be fair.
- I’ve done a lot of amdram, and I am forever grateful to the theatre techs. They make us look and sound good and they stop flats and suspended lights from falling on us. So thank you, you sweet theatre ninjas. May the blackouts always be long enough for you to do your thing.
- Right, hang tight, I’m going to do a quick wiki dive on ‘The Trojan Women’. Post sacking of Troy, husbands dead, families enslaved. And… oh it’s a yikes fest friends. It’s just a laundry list of atrocities. Cassandra though, definitely a candidate for The Eye, the gift of prophecy, with a little The Spiral or The Web thrown in, no one ever believing her.
- Hey, look, I love history and I love messing with history. I lose my tiny mind at the historical references this show pulls on. I freaking love the ahistorical setting of Rusty Quill Gaming. I didn’t think I’d ever identify with Oscar Wilde but goddamnit Alexander! I will keep doing this, this being assigning historical figures to The Entities. Fight me.
- OK, ‘The Seagull’, Chekov- NOPE. Nope not diving into that, too much like hard work.
- Ah, charity shops. Love ‘em. Can find beloved treasures and the most cursed shit in the same visit.
- ‘From the Library of Jurgen Leitner.’ I think at this stage, I was still naive to who this rat bastard was but to this day my phone autocorrects ‘Leitner’ to ‘LEITNER’ as I have screamed about his dusty ass to dodgelogic just that many times. I have a deep love of books and library collections and everything he stands for offends me on a cellular level. If I am ever asked to prepare an monologue for an audition it’s either going to be the statement from MAG165 or the ‘I Hate Jurgen Leitner’ rant.
- There’s one thing I’ve learnt from Rusty Quill; Latin = Bad News. Magnus trailer, chanting in Latin = Bad News. Rusty Quill Gaming, Ancient Rome, Latin = Bad News. A Leitner written in Latin = Bad News. Look, I know a lot of us did the Cambridge Latin Course, yes, including the writers of that one Doctor Who episode, but Caecilius can’t save us now!
- The choice of ozone smell makes perfect sense but there is something terribly unnerving about it. Something so terribly out of place.
- OK, this has nothing to do with the plot but he mentions the show he’s doing is ‘Much Ado About Nohing’ which is quiet possibly my favourite Shakespeare. I refuse to go to my grave quietly before I’ve had the chance to play Beatrice.
- 2007, grbookworm1818… Ms Robinson… screaming
- Leitner active in the 1990’s, 1995 he dropped from public view. OK we’re getting a time line.
- I wonder if there’s any significance to the name ‘Pinhole Books’.
- ‘Walking felt as natural as falling’… my dude.
- Mary Keay. Mary Fucking Keay… See, when we first meet her, tattooed and blasting death metal, I thought she was awesome… yikes. ‘Her Gerard kept and eye out’. And, unfairly again, I formed an opinion. One of a glowering, hulking enforcer.
- Fishing wire and safety razor… huh?!
- The eye painting. "Grant us the sight that we may not know, grant us the scent that we may not catch, grant us the sound that we may not call’. Our Gerard, a very talented artist. Our Gerard deserved so much better, I love our boy.
- ‘Tea tasting of dust and smoke’. I am not as well versed in tea as I’d like to be, but I have had Lapsang souchong tea before. It felt very decadent for my tastes, who’s used to whatever tea bag I can justify paying for, but I really enjoyed it. Every time I hiccuped or burped for the rest of the day I could taste smoke. I felt like a dragon.
- Place book in shadows, get tiny woodland creature bones?
- The Lichtenberg figure, and the first mention of Michael Crew. The smell, the sensation of falling. Waiting for something. For impact.
- Gerard Keay. My son. The description the statement giver gives of him is not flattering; obviously dyed hair, unshaven and haggard. But, I’m sorry, I you had Mary Keay for a mother, you’d be losing sleep too. Any why is everyone so mean about his hair. Can someone just treat him please, take him to a specialist, get it done right?
- £5k for ‘Ex Altiora’, £1,200 for ‘The Key of Solomon’. Where are they getting this sort of money? I’ll have to ask mum about the last fine arts auction she worked, see what sort of money books were making.
- Would have given it away but feared it ‘wouldn’t count’. There’s something about ownership here, something about responsibility. Reminds me of the golems of Ankh-Morepork in Sir Terry Pratchett’s Discworld buying themselves out of, well, slavery. With the passing of coin, no matter how much or little, something else intangible but vitally important also changes hands.
- This section of finding the news report of Gerard on trial for Mary’s murder painted my opinion of Gerard rather poorly. I thought he was some terrible, dangerous person, holding Mary captive somehow. God, I was so wrong.
- ‘If I never hear the name Jurgen Leitner again it will be too soon.’ Jooooon…. Jooooon whyyyyy….
- ‘Library Incident’ in 1994.
- Jon not trusting Martin’s research efforts, sending Sasha to double check. Rude.
- ‘Cause for some small alarm.’…. SMALL ALARM!?…. SIR! LEITNERS ON THE LOOSE ARE CAUSE FOR HEFFING BIG ALARM.
- Unable to locate Gerard Keay… soft weeping
- ‘Jurgen Leitner has done the world enough harm’. I mean… I agree whole heartedly, but, just see how that glass house treats you in 4 seasons’ time.
Supplemental: In looking for the ‘I Hate Jurgen Leitner’ video link, I found that there has been a dramatic reading in the style of The Archivist with a follow up statement taken post-brutal pipe murder included. Enjoy.
Supplemental: dodgylogic has once again come through, a very dear friend who is at once my enabler and sponsor through this ridiculousness. But she had some insight into my question about the significance in the naming of Pinhole Books:
‘A pinhole is how you make a Camera Obscura, a very early form of photography, which is also explicitly associated with The Eye. [x-files theme plays].’ - @dodgylogic

TMA Season 2
Ooooo spooky 👻
Jon said I am back at work before my doctor said it was ok and I am SO fucking scared
What If There Was A Band That Was So Fucking Bad
ACAB but I fucking love Basira and Daisy. Sue me.
I also love GERTRUDEEEE
It’s so fucking funny that Michael Crew tried to use Boneturner’s Tale to help him, it didn’t work, and then he’s like “oh well i’ll just take it to the library i guess”
The New Door feels very much like Hive and I love it
Gerard saving Andrea Numis from the Lonely by telling her to remember her mother when he’s on vacation right after being acquitted for his mom’s murder…. Gives me feelings
Tim canon bisexual 💙💜💖
Elias being a pothead in college is true character depth and development 10/10
Alexander Scaplehorn (the tax guy) is so fucking funny. Man cares so much about preventing money laundering that he survives the supernatural 🙏
Trevor the vampire killer canonically homophobic 😔
Jon finding out that Martin was lying about his qualifications and being so relieved bc 1) Martin probably did not kill Gertrude and 2) turns out that Martin is not an incompetent idiot, just a dropout
Not going to lie, I think I could’ve hacked it on Daedalus, but that’s just me
But also letting a private company shoot you into space to do isolation experiments is so incredibly dumb and Mr. Chilcott should’ve known better tbh
Agnes Montague saving Ronald Sinclair from Hilltop House via a searing kiss on the cheek… truly who is doing it like her?
We love a workplace intervention
The Buried coffin eats a cop so shoutout to the Buried I guess
Mary Keay and Gertrude have such a fun dynamic and I would kill for just a whole season of the two of them tbh
I think Binary might be my fave episode of this season. The statement itself is delightfully horrible, and the Tim/Jon fight at the end just makes it *chefs kiss* perfect
Jack Barnabas’s statement drives me crazy. Him saying he doesn’t think he has a destiny and Agnes saying, “That must be nice.” Him asking for a kiss and her crying after she gives it to him. Him losing everything after it, even though she dies.
The Book of the Dead is such a good concept.
A Long Way Down makes me sad ☹️ I’m a sucker for brother stories
The Kind Mother is fucked up. The aspect of Lucy having not even gotten along with her mother before NotThem replaced her makes me crazy
Jon is so fucking dumb. He listens to the statement about NotThem getting trapped in the table and is like “obviously I need to destroy this table” 😔
Jon telling Tim and Martin to take the next couple of days off fucks me up, especially after the time he spends listening to Sasha’s voice recordings. He doesn’t want to lose anyone else!!!
Tim and Martin going after him though 🥺
Also, oh my God, Tim and Martin just being silent for a full twenty seconds after the recording of Martin’s poetry gets played… truly awkward enough to make you forget about your friend who is maybe being hunted/killed
John worrying about conserving the tape to record himself being hunted and maybe killed… sir, that’s the Eye at work
Tim and Martin arguing about Tim being a dick and fighting all the time with John and Martin just wanting them to all be one big happy hostage family…. 🥺🥺🥺 they care about each other and I am dying
I fucking love the “taunt you into revealing your position” trope. NotThem telling Jon about how it hurt Sasha when she erased her and him yelling at them to shut up… yes!!!
NotThem about to kill Jon and him just whispering and apologizing over and over and over to Martin, Sasha, and Tim aghhhh
<rdj voice> there was a sewer man
Jurgen Leitner really lived in their basement huh
Leitner being a parallel to the Archivist and Jon being so disgusted w the way he uses and discards his assistants to horrible fates… sure hope that doesn’t come back to bite him in the future lol
“An angry goth” yo that’s my booooooy
Leitner is like, “I diagnose you with Voyuerism” and Jon is like, “This is so scary and I am gay and need to go cry brb”
Leitner talking to the recorder and telling Gertrude that she would’ve liked Jon 🥺
Elias said hello I am here to be evil and we have no choice but to stan
(Alternatively I am really glad I wasn’t on here during the peak bc Elias would’ve gotten sooooo annoying, but now I can enjoy my funny little murder man w no consequences 😈)
He <redacted> that old man 😳
Tim and Martin not seeing anything other than the body and just IMMEDIATELY assuming that Jon clubbed someone to death in his own office… can we get an F in the chat 😔
It’s 👁👄👁 time baby

Double ask anon - would love to see you try and group which episodes are Lonely. There's one that was and I saw you struggling to place it before and I'm So curious if you'd get it now. Don't want to point you there even though I don't think it's rly spoilers but yeah.... Just. Lonely is my favourite too so in my mind I just scream a little in excitement when I shows up - 2️⃣
I was thinking about this last night kinda because there’s some episodes where i have NO IDEA what they sort in to.
what the FUCK is the Man Who Eats The Computer supposed to go to and the Homophobic Vase i just don’t Understand
Anyways There are a few things i think go into The Lonely:
Mag 13: Alone, obviouslyyyy, but it also gives the hint that mist? is a part of The Lonely, because if Jon hadn’t pointed it out, I wouldn’t of noticed. In this case,
Mag 33: Boatswains Call, is ALSO part of The Lonely, and though i didn’t know it was called The Lonely, i connected the two only because Jon mentioned mist like “hm more mist” so i went oh OKAY they’re connected !! And looking back, IM FUCKING RIGHT !!! The ship in ep 33 is owned by a company ran by Nathaniel Lukas, and the Lukas family ALSO provides fundings to the Magnus Institute (as well as various others academic and research organizations), which can explain why Elias doesn’t want them to bother the Lukas’s. I still think it’s history though; Jonah knew Mordechai Lukas, friends, friends with Fundings, that sort. Speaking of THAT,
Mag 92: Nothing Beside Remains, aka what I refer to as one of the Jonah Letters, specifically the one from Barnabas Bennett. this is such a giveaway Lyrker, why bring it up? BECAUSE, this letter gives out two things that are effects of The Lonely. One, which is a bit iffy, Barnabas Bennett mightve just been going mad, but he swears he can hear mocking voices of his friends, but there’s nobody. TWO, when his cab driver picked him up, he could not discern who his driver was. THIS goes in relation to
Mag 48: Lost in the Crowd, where Andrea Nunis encounters, likely, Gerard Keay, who tells her she is marked, which also leads into my theory that Fears mark specific people in some way whether it be physical or not, you now belong to That Fear. She later gets lost in a crowd looking for someone she was traveling with, and she NEVER travels alongside someone, but hey, making friends! However, she could not discern a single feature on any of the people in the crowds faces, as well as coherent words, no matter if it was in a different language, nothing was discernerable. Her traveling partner likely went missing because of The Lonely, and when it catches you, you cannot escape.
However, you are mentioning that I couldn’t quite place an event, and i think that event was
Mag 57: Personal Space. Being isolated from everyone in space already points a little to The Lonely, but what REALLY hit it for me was that Carter Chilcott suddenly could no longer see the Earth. Any little comfort that you’re not the only one, any little reassurance of any kind, even if it’s millions of miles away, is Too Much company. It means you’re not Truly lonely. So it took away the Earth from his vision. It meant he was truly and utterly alone, not even the comfort of his thriving home planet he couldn’t even interact with, millions of miles away, was there, stolen from his vision.
YEAH I THINK I GOT IT LOOK AT ME !!!! IM ON A ROLL

Honestly I like to think that the divorce thing started out as Lonelyeyes running a scam on the Lukas family. The Lukases never would have let Peter give Elias funding if they had thought that they were actually happy together, so they started dramatically pretending to be bitter and miserable and breaking up all the time so that Peter's family wouldn't suspect they actually had a good and loving relationship.
GHFFDK ANON I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND, this is the funniest and crafitiest idea ever.
Just the mental image of Elias and Peter sitting down one afternoon and planing how to potantially get the Lukas out of their trail so they can be happy in private is hilarious.
I have my own idea that they have fake divorces on a list, so that they can complain about something and write it down as a motive to split up while not actually doing it cause its too much effort.
But this? This actually makes the serial divorcee thing much more fun cause its a scheme to get the Lukas to fuck off from their business. Elias and Peter must feel so clever whenever anyone mentions the break ups, internally they must be laughing their ass off and thinking of their last date.
shgkfd this is a gift i love it, thank you so much for sharing this with me. I would love to do a one shot about it eventually cause it sounds hilarious. Bless you anon.

Not a tv/movie, but what about the magnus archives for the ask meme?
YESSS OK SO EXCITING.
favorite male character: jon. ok like as much as I like martin's episodes jon is my guy I've found him so compelling since day one. like the change in motivations of recording..... his loyalty in protecting people and struggling to grapple with the fact he is the problem. he's just so fun to me! love him! also I love a character who has to be right all the time.....
favorite female character: melanie!! I love her so much like god the desire she has to do things she is proud of and believes in and her drive to do that coming into conflict with just everything around her.
least favorite character: elias. duh. or jonah. whatever idc I think it's very obvious I can't stand him. I think he's a great villain because for me personally his retelling people's worst moments is just always awful and I can't think of anything worse. so yes I hate him I hope he dies horribly
prettiest character: a few of my friends have sent me spoiler free art but at the moment it's very hard for me to look at art because I'm dodging spoilers so much. however instinctually I think it would be georgie. 🥰
funniest character: tim..... probably. only because I listened to his tapes with sasha (the S5 ones) and mannnnnn you really had it rough. so tim but also martin is quite funny
favorite season: so this is a very hard one due to the nature of me literally bingeing them since april. ough this is so hard! um I think I'm going to go for season three. mainly because I think I was just getting things correct left and right and it was like things are coming together but they're not all ready yet so it was still searching for patterns. also looking back some of my favourite episodes are in there. or season four because the character arcs!!
favorite episode: oh my god ok now that's even trickier I always struggle to pick like 5 out of 20. so rn I'm on episode e189...... I'm so tempted to go with episode 2 do not open...... or episode 71 underground. but that's near impossible.
favorite romantic ship: see this is hard because i would love to say melanie and georgie because they're two of my favourite characters but we haven't really seen them. in a relationship. I also really enjoyed the glances of the timsasha possibilities. idk I feel like I have to say jonmartin because they get the most play! especially since I have thought pretty little about headcanons etc because I haven't finished. so I'm going to say jonmartin gets it by technicalities. I really do like them!! um I think seeing the contrast of martin trying to shine a light on jon's humanity and alleviate his guilt versus jon reconciling his love for martin and his desire to complete his quest. like in that "going through the burning building" one.
they are very interesting and I look forward/dread their tragic ending.
favorite family ship: MARY AND GERARD KEAY. EASY. LOVED all their episodes I love their family they're so fucked up it's so fun to listen to.
favorite friend ship: now this is very very very hard there's many many possibilities. I sort of want to say daisy and jon not because I think they were the closest but they were very interesting.... especially when jon talked about never forgiving her. I did like tim and martin though.........
worst ship: again a tricky one because usually you see bad ships from other people's bad opinions but I have been blissfully ignorant so I'm not sure. I think anything with elias and someone who isn't like peter would be bad. eurgh. but idk! because I have seen nothing lmfao
ok! that was long!

First time listening to TMA (Part III)
Part I II
16-40
#16 Arachnophobia: This has a vibe of “well wasn’t that fucked up, anyway..”. Also horrifying thanks, I now hate spiders even more and will be very paranoid for a few days.
#17 The Bone Turner's Tale: oooh nice intervention from his supervisor or something and the beginnings of an arch. So we have the human-leather-book and the not-Canterbury-Tales-book. They’re dangerous and tragedy befalls anyone who interacts with them. Also weird that Lukas' family is patrons of the Institute, they do feel creepy and with other intentions but now I’m sure I’m missing something. Maybe it’s just not time for that yet.
#18 The Man Upstairs: huh, is this where the meat from A Father's Love has been disappearing to? (Or was that stated in the episode?) But still feels like there’s a connection, with the whole meet thing and a creature made from meat.
#19 Confession I: !!! Actual storys crossing each other. I did think that it might be the father that was called in the tree episode but I didn’t remember the names. Nice. Although that whole cannibal thing did catch me off guard, there hasn’t really been anything like that so far, but I won’t complain.
#20 Desecrated Host II: love me some religious imagery with blood and parallelism to other things, in this case cannibalism. As soon as he said it was time for the Eucharist I knew that was it of course. So good. Don’t really get the relevancy of the name of the company that gave them the cloth, but maybe I’ll get it later?
#21 Freefall: excuse what was that end?? Here I am t marveling at the fact that John seems to maybe believe a bit of the statement and then it just cuts??? What did Martin find/bring??
#22 Colony: poor Martin, he sounds like such a sweetheart. Nice to John care at least somewhat. Who is this Jane Prentiss?? Didn’t they only mention her once at the beginning. Also interesting text, I’m sure that won’t come back to haunt us later on.
#23 Schawatzwald: ok so I had to go to the transcript of the episode to make some sense of what John says at the end, cause I was getting lost in between so many names. I do find it quite interesting that the Keay family and Magnus family (responsable for the founding of the institute) are so linked. I mean this is the third time that the name has popped up with a few months according to the timeline of the podcast, also they continue to be linked to books if I recall correctly. Does this have anything to do with the library of whomever that John is worried about? Are the eyes that Albrecht found on the tomb related to the cult that was mentioned? I’ll wait and see what becomes of that.
#24 Strange Music: ok definitely creepy but the overarching story is better. So the circus will definitely come into play later on given how John vaguely recalls the name. And also that they apparently have the cala-thing at the Archive. I would be worried about it but I think once they make it to the Institute they’ve already done what they needed to. Fun aside though I thought that John kinda recorded on like a room away from everyone else but this does seem to be the case if other employees can just jump in whenever cause they can hear him (what are John’s pronouns?? I’ll use him for now)
#25 Growing Dark: I knew that church/cult would come back. And I actually forgot that Gertrude's death was never actually specified, just "died in the line of work" or something, so I’m guessing right now it’s all gonna ramp up to how she died?
#26 A Distortion: ooooo more plot! So this Jane Prentiss is apparently dangerous and a mass of worms that is now stalking the team at the Institute. This not-Michael knows that something could happen to the archivist but there is a way to prevent it. It’s all coming together quite suddenly now but there are still many things floating around or missing
#27 A Sturdy Lock: John you’re finding empathy or something, how nice. Interesting story but it doesn’t particularly stand out
#28 Skintight: creepy though I have to say my favorite part is where you can hear characters interacting. You feel the glares they’re probably giving each other. Can’t say the name rings a bell right now but then again maybe it’s something for later
#29 Cheating Death: Not bad, had to listen again for how the exchange worked but still kinda cool. Hope the guy shows up again later on.
#30 Killing Floor: exactly as John said, more meat. Disorienting certainly and now it makes me want to see the actual process of meat plants.
#31 First Hunt: damn forget the statement I’m shocked by how defeated John sounds. Of course with everything going on who wouldn’t be. You’ve been told you and most of your time might die, your predecessor passed away under mysterious circumstances, your coworkers are being stalked by something dangerous and you can’t understand why. It’s all a bit much, but very interesting for me of course
#32 Hive: interesting and definitely laying groundwork for the story ahead. Again love how rattled John is at the end of the statement. He even breaks down a bit and admits that it doesn’t have a natural explanation.
#33 Boatswain's Call: omg are these comments from listeners from the show? The corrections from cases? How things are sometimes not clear? Also finally Tim! Is that the whole team? I think it is. Ok to the statement now. Very intriguing, again with the Lukas, the silence that follows them around and the mist.
#34 Anatomy Class: love how you can really instill horror with just descriptions and leaving some things to the imagination. That teeth-apple sounds horrifying, I hate it :). I imagine that the tidbit about placeholder name if for anyone that didn’t catch the John Doe and their dead stares. Although could these things be similar to that video recorder girl some episodes ago?
#35 Old Passages: okokok so now we’re actually starting to have all the details come together, but I’m still missing things. So this is Gerard Keay who knows many things from his mother, like the fact that Jorgun Lightbear(??) had books there. And it mentions some cases like the spiders, the burning feeling, the books from the mausoleum and by the end someone drops off a package for John, which I’m sure also happened in another statement. Also the worms/infestation is getting worse it seems. Also did the guy that dropped off the package sound like when you put together words from different videos?? Like he’s two different voices? Sounds weird
#36 Taken ill: ahhhhh you can’t leave me hanging like this!! What is that table? I can’t remember a table with a square hole. Although the zippo does feel familiar, didn’t someone have one but with an eye?
#37 Burnt Offering: ok so it was two men rather than just one, no wonder. And what’s with the table, is it because it’s related to a doppelgänger case? Poor Martin it’s not his fault. Knew it was Gertrude in the photo. Again, poor John he does indeed sound very tired of everything.
#38 Lost and Found: nice concept that it doesn’t just disappear things but it actually kinda erases they’re existence, could this be used with Janet if it were in the Archive? Also near the end of season 1, nice! Who needs sleep?
#39 Infestation: ????? Don’t leave me like that! Is this the end of Sasha? I liked her, hope we can her back. So is the table the one with the power to create not-people?
#40 Human Remains: ok love again the emotion and how you can tell each character by how they’re reaction to the situation and to John. Tim is obviously shaken up, can’t say I blame him. Elias is weirdly detached, I’m sure something will come from that. It’s not that he's malicious, but toned down, still you can tell he does care a bit, maybe. Martin is still a sweetheart and I love him a lot, great voice actor. I don’t like that we now have a Not-Sasha, I really liked her and worse is the fact that she managed to get the tape that has Sasha's experience, maybe because you can tell her mannerisms are different or for plot, either way not a fan. Poor John too, that can’t have been a pleasant experience and now he’s very shaken by everything, feels like he’s two second away from snapping. And the fact that one of the tapes missing is for the weird instrument does not sit right with me, then again that is the point. So I’m guessing next in the story is exploring these weird tunnels and see more threads start to connect with the rooms to be found there and what actually happened to Gertrude.
It’s been quite journey but I’m so glad I’ve finally given it a chance. It really has great narrative and voice acting and manages to keep you engaged with the mysteries. Loving it so far!!!

Horror Recs for Magnus Fans, Part the Second
Last time I did this I was assuming that anyone who was listening to a horror podcast already knew some horror, but I have since learned that this is not the case, so there are a few more classics in here, as well as some more of my faves.
For anyone and everyone who listens to TMA: Sarah Monette's Kyle Murchison Booth stories, many (though not all) of which are collected in The Bone Key. Queer information professional would very much like for ghosts and monsters to leave him alone, does not get what he wants; can't resist the impulse to help out people who are more fucked over than him anyway. I love Booth so much, he deserves much better things than he gets.
For Web stans: Blindsight by Peter Watts, a sci-fi horror novel about free will and consciousness. Lydia Nicholas named this as one of her favorite books in the first Assistant's Round Table; I respect her for it, but I read this once and it gave me an existential crisis. Highly recommended, but make sure you've got a palate cleanser.
For jonelias fans and/or fans of the Corruption: Candyman (1992). With bonus folklore & urban legend meta! Kissing bees into your (potential) lover's mouth in order to convince them to become a murderous spirit of vengeance just like you! "All you have left is my desire for you"!!! It's extremely sexy, is what I'm saying, in all the best ways. (Trigger warnings for violence against children and a fair amount of gore, in addition to the aforementioned bees.)
If you love the no-holds-barred social commentary of season five: The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle. No, I will not shut up about this book until absolutely everyone in the world has read it. It's short! You could read it in an afternoon! This is Lovecraft's "The Horror at Red Hook" from the point of view of a black musician and hustler who's hired to help out with the ritual, and it's incredible. (If you're enjoying Lovecraft Country, absolutely do not miss this.)
If you miss the standalone statements of season one and two: the works of the early 20th century cosmic horror and ghost story writers: M.R. James, Algernon Blackwood, Arthur Machen. Machen has a tendency to get pretty eugenics-y, and they're all either misogynistic or don't have women in their stories at all, but goddamn do they do atmosphere. ("The Magnus Archives" is named after James's "Count Magnus," Jonny's favorite M.R. James story.)
For Stranger fans and those who love unexplained mysteries: The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher, a Southern horror (not a Gothic) about a woman who goes to clean out her abusive grandmother's house to sell it only to find that there are things other than his wife that her grandfather was afraid of, and for good reason. Features hot competent neighbors, extremely practical reactions to terrible monsters, and a Very Good Dog (the dog does not die).
For Lonely bitches: "The Horla" by Guy de Maupassant, the story I use to describe my depression to people. That's a pretty good content warning, honestly.
If you loved the "Am I still human?" plotline: The Monster of Elendhaven by Jennifer Giesbrecht, a grotesque little novella about monsters in (dysfunctional) love. I'm a bit iffy on the ending, but honestly landing the ending of horror is so tricky that I'll almost never discount something just because I'm iffy on the ending. The body horror and emotional repression throughout make up for it.
If you crave the supernatural adventure series starring Gerry Keay: The Sandman Slim series by Richard Kadrey - modern noir, so gritty you can feel it in your teeth, featuring all kinds of monsters, demons, curses, and narrowly-averted apocalypses. Not as misogynistic as noir can get, but it is noir so there's definitely a bit of that (but definitely not as misogynistic as Jim Butcher). Trigger warnings all over the place; this is B-movie horror in book form.
For Distortion fans: The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. Bears almost no resemblance to the Netflix series of the same name, or any of the movies based on it; this is a twisty psychological novel with a profoundly unreliable narrator and a lot of repressed queerness. Michael/Helen would be right at home in Hill House. (Content warning for suicidality.)
If you want your horror to make you cry: El Orfanado, directed by Guillermo del Toro; a family moves into a house that used to be an orphanage, that is, of course, haunted. This is a tremendous distillation of the way that horror movies are so often centered around women not being believed, so content warning for gaslighting (and for harm to children); I saw this movie once and entire scenes are embedded in my brain in full color. (Honestly you can't go wrong with any Guillermo del Toro movies; he's fantastic.)
If you want your horror to make you cry, but make it gay: In the Flesh, two seasons of a zombie TV show tragically cut short (yes, it ends on a cliffhanger, I’m sorry). Uses zombies as a metaphor for homophobia, but also includes actual queer people. Content warning for small-town-typical homophobia and tragic gays. Please come yell with me about Simon Monroe, I love him so much.
For Slaughter fans: The Shining by Stephen King - look, look, I know. He's not great. He needs an editor. The movie is all kinds of fucked up. But this book is one of the most raw, personal horror stories I've ever read, and it's got an excellent combination of supernatural influence and real-life mundane fear of addiction and personal weakness that really grabs you by the intestines. Again, an iffy ending, but it's worth it for the slow descent into paranoia and madness.
If you just want to try to find some authors to read: The Borderlands anthology series, paperbacks from the height of the 80s horror boom; there are so many different kinds of stories in here that I can pretty much guarantee you that you won't like some of them but you might well find something new to fall in love with. A lot of these writers are out of print but readily available at used bookstores or for pennies on Amazon.
As always, let me know if you liked any of these or if you have a specific need: it is no longer my job to recommend books and media to people but it is still my very favorite thing to do and I will be obnoxious about it forever

How about an AU where Jon and Gerry have been dating since Uni and have managed to keep it secret from everyone (including Elias and Gerttrude) by complete accident?
send me an au and i'll give you 5+ headcanons about it! requests closed!
by accident you say? 👀
1. jon and gerry meet somewhere completely ridiculous (yet also completely mundane) where the chance of them running into one another was like.... one in a million. like, maybe jon's class got out early and so he decided to walk a little further from campus to try a new coffee shop that he's never tried before and never will again because he realizes he really hates the drinks and that it's not worth the walk, and gerry is in the area looking into something leitner-related and he looks down at his phone a bit too long and runs smack into jon when he's walking away from the coffee shop with a lukewarm travel cup of hot chocolate because they were out of tea (what kind of coffee shop is out of tea? jon thinks with a scowl).
the hot chocolate spills all over gerry and jon's like 'oh god sorry, do you- do you want me to do something?' and gerry's about to brush past him when he sees the person he was looking for and shit, they're looking this way so without thinking he just... grabs jon and pulls him into the nearest shop. which happens to be selling something weird, idk, little ceramic figurines. and gerry does Not know what to say because like, he can't tell this stranger that he's hiding from maybe-a-fear-avatar! so he's like 'uh. you can make it up to me by.... helping me pick out a figurine? for, er. my mother. yes.'
so they're just walking through this shop, gerry's shirt still wet with hot chocolate, jon Very confused and also Very late for class but somehow nervous to just leave, so they look at figurines together. gerry keeps looking back out the window and nope, maybe-an-avatar is still there, and now they're sitting on the bench and it doesn't look like they're planning on moving anytime soon and gerry really doesn't want to take the chance and gamble that the maybe-avatar won't recognize him or realize what he's looking for. so gerry keeps shooting down every recommendation jon gives him with some progressively-more bullshit reasons--'oh, my mum already has that one' 'that one's too expensive, i can't afford it' 'that's too small' 'i don't like the way that one's looking at me' 'my mom's allergic to dogs, actually'--until jon's finally like 'okay what is going on and can i leave now?'.
and the maybe-avatar is still out there and gerry's certain now that they're watching him and he's suddenly very aware that he's spent a long period of time with this guy whose name he actually didn't quite catch and that it definitely looks like they're working together and ah, fuck, if i let him leave and he gets targeted because of me i'd feel horrible. so gerry sighs and thinks fuck it and is like 'listen i'm gonna level with you. i'm here looking for a book and there is somebody watching me right now and i know how that sounds but it's really not as shady as you think and also really not my fault but it is my fault that you're here too so. yeah. sorry i don't know if it's safe for you to leave.'
and all jon can think to say is 'a book?'.
and gerry's like 'don't worry about that bit, you really wouldn't understand' and jon gets all bristly and says primly, 'well, i'm a lit major and i work at the university library maybe i could help' and gerry can't help but laugh and say, 'really hope there's not a leitner in your uni library, mate'. and then jon gets this wide-eyed expression on his face like he's just seen a ghost and says 'what did you just say?' and before gerry can deflect again jon says, more intensely, but also hesitantly, 'is... is it called a guest for mr. spider?'.
and gerry's like 'um. no, it's not' and jon deflates a bit but now gerry's curious and he's like 'why?' and jon tries to deflect like 'oh clearly i misunderstood' but gerry's not budging and he's like 'no, no--have you read a leitner? gold bookplate, super fucked-up consequences?' and jon just goes pale which is really all the confirmation gerry needs. gerry feels the need to clarify that he hates them too--that he burns them whenever he gets the chance.
weakly, jon says, 'there... there's more than one?'. and then, a bit stronger: 'you- you're looking for another one? here? and you're going to burn it?'
gerry: yes, that's the plan. why--?
jon, without hesitation: i want to help
and maybe gerry is hesitant at first but, well. it seems like jon is already fully in this, so he reluctantly agrees, and they hunt down the leitner together and gerry lets jon burn it and then they're friends (and it really doesn't take long at all for that to transition into partners).
2. gertrude and elias missing that they're dating is a comedy of errors, including a lot of rather dramatic near misses including, but not limited to:
- jon always leaves a room just before one of them enters
- gerry always talks ambiguously about the person helping him hunt down leitners; elias always assumes he means gertrude, gertrude always assumes he means his mother. this is exploited to a comedic level
- getrude thinks 'going on a date' is code for gerry having a new lead on jurgen leitner and leaving to go chase it down
- when jon joins the institute as a researcher and runs into gerry in the building for the first time, he greets him neutrally in a mutually-agreed display of professionalism while working. gertrude and elias both remark at the fact that 'it's so nice that jon/gerry has a friend'
- gertrude, opening the door to the break room and bustling around inside, looking over at gerry where he's standing in front of the counter, jon sat atop it with his legs bracketing gerry's hips (they have very clearly just been kissing): oh hello gerard. jonathan. talking about leitners again?
jon, a bit embarrassed, slipping into Ultra Professionalism to compensate: i was just discussing with mr. keay the details of case number 0031211 regarding ms. cortena's experience with the talking vase--
gertrude, not at all interested, already knows that it's fake: right, right, carry on then
*after she's gotten her tea and left*
gerry, holding in laughter: 'mr. keay'?
jon, blushing: shut up gerry
3. gerry, casually, not actually aware that getrude doesn't know that he and jon are dating: yeah so then i had to leave my date early to go chase down this leitner and jon was not pleased
gertrude, after a hum of acknowledgement: how unfortunate. i'm not sure how jonathan's opinion on the matter is relevant, however. was he disappointed that you didn't ask him to track down the leitner with you?
gerry, Confused™️: he was.... at the date?
gertrude: at the date? whatever for?
gerry, now staring openly: because i was on a date with him? because we're dating? wait, did you not know that?
gertrude, not willing to admit that she missed that for nearly three years: of course i knew that, gerard. don't be foolish.
gerry, now even more confused: but--
gertrude, without missing a beat: i trust the leitner hunt went well, then?
gerry, after a long pause: um. yes?
gertrude, nodding: good.
4. there's an institute party and everyone's allowed to bring a plus-one
elias, noticing that jon's alone at the party: ah hello, jonathan. no plus one for you today?
jon: no, gerry couldn't make it, unfortunately. family business.
elias, somehow Oblivious, and also very Old Fashioned and way too familiar with his employees: quite. though typically, plus ones are of the romantic capacity. it's nice that you would consider gerard an acceptable substitute though, i suppose
jon, Bi confusion and suddenly unsure if his boss is homophobic: um. it.... it would have been in a romantic capacity?
elias, still Not Getting It: ah, i see. perhaps for the best, then--office parties don't make for pleasant first dates, in my experience
jon, unsure of how much of his personal life he wants to share with elias but not really wanting to pretend like he's not been dating gerry for going on three years now: um. it- it wouldn't be our first date. or- or really a date at all, just an- an event, i really don't think gerry would call this a date
elias, Getting it a little bit: ah. unfortunate, then. congratulations, i suppose, are in order. was it a recent engagement?
jon, ??????, biting the bullet: we've been together for three years, elias
5. jon, handing gerry a wrapped package on their fourth anniversary after they started dating: this is, um. this is for you
gerry, opening it and holding up the little ceramic figure of a dog: jon. is this--?
jon, in a rush: it's from that shop. where we, uh. where we met.
gerry, overcome with such love he really can't stand it, throwing all of his proposal plans out the window and digging the little square velvet box out of his pocket: jon can i ask you a question--
(jon is so surprised he just starts crying. it's only the fifth time gerry's ever seen him cry and he's so worried he said something wrong at first but then jon manages to say yes around his tears and jon wraps his arms around gerry tightly and buries his face in gerry's shoulder and whispers i love you and gerry hugs him tightly in return and says i love you, too, jon. i love you too.)

If you could get one more statement featuring any avatar(s), which would you most want to hear about again?
Okay, he's not an avatar, but I am forever gutted we didn't hear from Dekker. I don't think his actual statement would be as good as the mental image of him I have in my head, but I love that guy and wish we'd heard more from him.
In terms of actual avatars, Mary Keay, though I suppose it's debatable if she counts either? I just love the Delano-Keay family a lot and want to hear all their fucked up drama
If she doesn't count, then Jane. The way she writes in Hive is still one of the best styles in the whole show, it's just enrapturing
