A Lesson In Satanic Symbols

Hello tumblr. Nothing personally drives me more up the wall than misinformation about specific symbols. Today I will educate y’all on what the symbols actually mean and/or what they’re used for. If you have any questions or additions please feel free to add on to this post!

1. Upside-down cross (Cross of St. Peter)

This one gets my gat the most - this symbol is holy!

Brief history: when St. Peter was crucified, he felt that he was not above Christ, therefore pleaded to be executed in this manner.

When you watch paranormal movies/shows and see the cross turn downside it is just a means of intimidation and fear. There is no blasphemy to be had with this symbol.

It has turned into a symbol of anti-Christianity in modern times; although you’re free to utilize it in that manner, remember that it has a holy origin.

2. Pentagram (Upside & Downside)

Another one that pisses me off severely. Hold on to your teeth.

Upside = holy. Downside = unholy.

Long bible story short: the archangel Raphael gifted a ring branding the upside pentagram to the prophet King Solomon as a means of protection.

To some Christians, it represents the five wounds of Christ. For Pagans, it represents the five elements: Fire, Earth, Air, Water, and Spirit.

Just as with the Cross of St. Peter, the downside pentagram has been taken up as unholy - a symbol of evil. In this case it’s legitimately unholy when turned downside. The difference between this & St. Peter is that a downside pentagram - for those who uptake is as the five wounds of Christ - is a mocking of Christ himself; St. Peter was going to be excecuted as Jesus did but did not want to be seen as him and was not worthy of such a symbolic execution.

3. Satan’s Cross (Leviathan Cross)

Leviathan /=/ Satan. He (or She, in some cases) is his own being. He is the demon of the sin Envy.

The Double Cross (taken from the Cross of Lorraine - another holy symbol) symbolizes balance. The infinity sign is the symbol of eternal universe and nature. In EU Alchemy, the cross symbolize the element of Sulfur.

The Leviathan Cross has also been picked up in modern times as an anti-Christian symbol. While that holds up, it wasn’t created to rattle any of those bones - LaVey found the symbol and then put spooky mysticism behind it. Blame it on that guy.

4. Image Of Satan (Baphomet)

The Baphomet was created by The Knights Templar. They worshipped it as a means against the strict religious laws at its time. Or so it’s alleged.

The name comes from a butchered inscription of the name Muhammad, prophet of Islam. The claims that the Templars were worshipping the “Baphomet" meant, to misinformed people, that they were secretly Muslims. It is important to note that Islam was not recognized as monotheistic in this time period and was thought to be evil.

For some, he’s Satan himself. For others, he’s a separate being from Satan. Whatever you chose to see it as is up to you - there’s no right or wrong!

5. Seal Of Satan (Sigil of Lucifer)

Something I can’t stress enough: Lucifer /=/ Satan. Lucifer is his own sepret being. He is the demon of the sin Pride.

The symbol originated in the Grimoire Verum - published in 1517.

Detailed description by the Demonic Paradise Fandom Wiki: “The ‘X’ over the sigil indicates the power and realm of the physical plane; its passion and sensuality that drives all entities. The inverted triangle represents water, often referred to as the original “Elixir of Ecstasy” without which physical life could not exist. The “V” at the bottom of the sigil represents the duality of all things; dark and light, male and female and the power of convergence of the two into one manifesting balance, creation and existence."
