when you were talking about stylistic influences, you said that you found it hard to do comedy. would you mind elaborating on that? i also find that there's very little writing that makes me LOL, and most of what does is fanfic. have you seen comedy done well in writing (novels, fic, etc.)? how do you approach it yourself? (btw fwiw i think your comedic sense is great)
Writing comedy is like writing a sex scene. You have to maintain tension. Except, I find comedy 200% harder, because with sex scenes you can rely on physicality. It’s a momentum built on what and how the character feels. There’s expectation and payoff, just like with comedy - except, in comedy, the payoff often hinges on surprise. A reversal of expectations - or, if not a reversal, simply something you didn’t expect. A huge amount of comedy is made up of the unexpected. We laugh because we’re taken off guard.

Now, not all humor is based on shock or Wacky Zany Unexpectedness, but I would argue that all humor relies on a sort of momentum, a tension. It’s something you have to actively keep up throughout the duration of however long the humor is supposed to last - and if you’re writing a comedy, that’s the whoooole thing. It’s performative, in a way. You can’t create comedy passively, even if part of the humor relies on silence or expectant pauses; you have to be engaged, start to finish. It takes a lot of creative energy, even for people who have a gift or passion for it.
And moreover, even for people with a natural gift for comedy, it’s a skill. You get better at it when you practice. There are rhythms and shortcuts and rules of thumb.
I would say this may be especially true when you’re writing, because (unless you’re working with a co-writer), writing is just you. If you’re an actor or performer you have your co-stars to play off of; or, at the very least, you likely have an audience. Humans naturally feed off of each other’s emotional states. We’re herd animals. Ever noticed how it’s 1000% easier to laugh when you’re around friends than when you’re alone? For me, it’s even much easier to laugh when I’m listening to a podcast or watching a video than when I’m reading, because hearing human voices tricks my brain into thinking, “Oh, it’s Social Time!”
I personally find writing pure comedy difficult because it’s just me, sitting alone in a room typing words on a screen. However, I also haven’t done much comedy, and like I said it’s a practicable skill, so I’m sure I’d get better at it if I made a real effort to practice.
Comedy well done in novels:
Douglas Adams! Especially The Hitchhiker’s Guide series. Classic touchstone of literary comedy in my opinion.
“The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't.”
“For a moment, nothing happened. Then, after a second or so, nothing continued to happen.”
“In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.”
Terry Pratchett also does a great job at humor - I especially enjoyed his team-up with Neil Gaiman for Good Omens:
“All tapes left in a car for more than about a fortnight metamorphose into Best of Queen albums.”
“Most books on witchcraft will tell you that witches work naked. This is because most books on witchcraft are written by men.”
“The Kraken stirs. And ten billion sushi dinners cry out for vengeance.”
They also do a fantastic job with situational humor, such as Crowley’s car being on fire and the one random guy giving directions completely ignoring it because he’s like “Well, surely he must know his car is on fire.”
Rick Riordan:
“Ever come home and found your room messed up? Like some helpful person (hi, Mom) has tried to “clean” it, and suddenly you can’t find anything? And even if nothing is missing, you get that creepy feeling like somebody’s been looking trough your private stuff and dusting everything with lemon furniture polish?”
“I’ve met plenty of embarrassing parents, but Kronos, the evil Titan Lord who wanted to destroy Western Civilization? Not the kind of dad you invited to school for Career Day.”
“He’d changed since the last summer. Instead of Bermuda shorts and a T-shirt, he wore a button-down shirt, khaki pants, and leather loafers. His sandy hair, which used to be so unruly, was now clipped short. He look like an evil male model, showing off what the fashionable college-age villain was wearing to Harvard this year.”
“We only came close to dying six or seven times which I thought was pretty good. A minute later Annabeth hit a slippery patch of moss and her foot slipped. Fortunately she found something else to put it against. Unfortunately that something was my face.”
J.K. Rowling:
I love me a smart-ass narrator.
“This is night, Diddykins. That's what we call it when it goes all dark like this.”
“Lee Jordan was finding it difficult not to take sides. 'So — after that obvious and disgusting bit of cheating —' 'Jordan!' growled Professor McGonagall. 'I mean after that open and revolting foul —' 'Jordan, I'm warning you —' 'All right, all right. Flint nearly kills the Gryffindor Seeker, which could happen to anyone, I'm sure, so a penalty to Gryffindor, taken by Spinnet, who puts it away, no trouble, and we continue play, Gryffindor still in possession.”
-_-_-_-
I’m having trouble finding the funniest quotes, but y’all know what I’m talking about.
As far as how I approach it myself:
Well, see the top up there. (Waaaaay up there before my whole lecture, lol.) If I’m trying to write something humorous, I approach it from an angle of momentum or energy. Keep up a kind of tension, even if the scene itself is fairly laid-back, and play on unexpectedness - sometimes situational, sometimes in phrasing or dialogue. A snarky narrator is always a good way to add an edge.
Basically, if I’m trying to be funny in my writing, I write as if I’m joking around with a group of friends - the group of friends being my audience. Same ballpark. Reference inside jokes (which were established earlier in the story), play on repetition and reversal of expectations, joke around about “relatable” things (much of early meme humor relied on this), be sarcastic or dry or exaggerated as the situation calls for. Even if there’s no one really there and I’m just typing words on a page, I find it much easier to approach humor if I come at it from a perspective of kidding around with my audience and having fun with them, instead of just sitting by myself at my desk writing words.
Well that was kind of all over the place but hopefully it answered your questions!
I should start a consistent tag for these asks where I accidentally write long-winded essays on how I write.

Favorite Sohma’s
Hi yes, uh, I needed a space to rant about fruits basket because I am still very broken so yea
Disclaimer that this is just my opinion and I still love them all very much, just needed to get this out of my system ayee. Also I will include a song that reminds me of them because I am that invested in this so yeaaaa
14- Kagura Sohma
Boy by Little Mix - “I know what you’re worth girl, you know what you got”
I rank Kagura as my least favorite just for the fact that I cant really relate to her I guess? I mean, she is okay, I think she is cute and all but I don't think violence is the way to go about her struggles and she is so much more worth than she gives herself credits for. In the end, I dont think I full understood her big struggle as much as the other characters and thats why she is at number 14, although I want her to be happy and full of love and support like the others ;w;
13- Akito Sohma
My Eyes by Neil Patrick Harris and Felicia Day - “But it’s plain to see, Evil inside of me is on the rise”
Akito is a complicated one for me man. Of course, in the beginning and throughout the manga you learn to really dislike her because she did some terrible things, specially to my baby boi Yuki and eye-.... But then when we learn more about her and everything she has gone through we start sympathizing with her but i..... cant just forget everything she did. I get she was traumatized since she was little, she became dependent on the zodiacs because of her father’s words and mother’s behaviour thus becoming a broken person with this big responsibility she didn't ask for. It really ticks me however, how much pain the others underwent through her, and even though its a healing process, the traumas and everything they suffered is still there which is why I cant place her higher. I do not hate her by any means, but she isnt my favorite person on this list either. I do ship her with Shigure and I think they help each other out, and they grow from the other.
12- Shigure Sohma
Used to the Darkness by Des Rocs - “Now would you pray before you twist the knife? Yeah, would you take my hand and take a life?”
*big sigh* Shigure is also a complicated one for me. It may be my big dumb energies showing but I didnt fully get a grasp on his character? I know he was doing everything for Akito’s sake to liberate from the curse and be with her so she is finally a “woman” but he always acted a bit shady xD?? I would have love to know more about his backstory, we dont get much from his motivations and character other than the perverted aspect and that he loves Akito lmaoo. I do think he is hilarious and I love the dynamic he has with Hatori and Ayame lol
11- Ayame Sohma
Starships by Nicky Minaj - “Starships were menat to fly, Hands up and touch the sky “
To be honest I am pretty neutral about Ayame’s character. He is hilarious and I love how Yuki insults him every tike he gets the chance lolll. I like how throughout the story he tries to change to become a better brother to Yuki and person even though he is pretty extra most of the time about it. He has a good heart and even though he made some mistakes he owns up to them which in my opinion, makes him a good character <33 I love his friendship with Hatori lmaooo they balance each other out sooo well
10- Kureno Sohma
Taking Chances by Celine Dion - “Never knowing if there's solid ground below, Or a hand to hold, or hell to pay”
I really like Kureno! He has gone through quite a bit and he needs a hug. I am sad thinking how most of his life he lead it pretty similarly to Yuki’s, apart from everyone and super enclosed to his relationship with Akito due to him breaking the curse and feeling bad about it. I do wish we would have gotten to know more about his personality and story, if we did I would have definitely ranked him higher! He really reminds me of Tohru’s father and I think Uotani is perfect for him <33 would have love to see more about the two of them and hopefully they expand upon it in the anime
9- Ritsu Sohma
Waving Through a Window by Ben Platt - “On the outside, always looking in, Will I ever be more than I've always been?”
Okay okay so I have a lot of thoughts on Ritsu. Manga Ritsu is okay, I really dont have much of an opinion on him due to him appearing only in a few chapters, I feel like from the Sohma’s, he is the one we get the least information about. But then the anime episode came out where they presented Ritsu and I thought they gave him so much more life and rounded personality where, I get to relate a lot to him? I am someone who is constantly apologizing for absolutely no reason and seeing him be all anxious and stressed about others interactions is big relate to me and I stan. I also think the whole dressing as a woman plot line is better dealt with in the anime and I hope we get to see more about his insecurities and troubles in the future because he is truly a very interesting character! I stan my one (1) anxious monkey.
8- Kisa Sohma
Mean by Taylor Swift - “But you can take me down with just one single blow, But you don't know what you don't know”
Cinnammon rooooooolll. Kisa is such a cutie. I dont have much to say other than my mood every time I think about Kisa is hugging her like Tohru does because she is babyyyy. Also her bullying story is one I think many viewers and readers can relate a lot to and such an important topic I think they covered pretty well and I loveee. Also her and Hiro are one of my favorite ships because they work so well and asdfgh in this household Kisa is a queennn.
7- Isuzu Sohma
Take me Home by Jess Glynne - “Came to you with a broken faith, Gave me more than a hand to hold”
I really like Isuzu!! I am pretty bummed we wont get to meet her in season 1 of the Anime reboot but hopefully in the nest season! She is quite a complex character that I didnt really understand at the beginning but once we see how much she loves Haru and all that she does in order to protect and keep him save she really went up my list. She has gone through so much, from her shattered reality from her parents, Akito threatening Haru, her being locked up withour given any food.... Isuzu is so strong and one of the best build characters in the series and I am super excited to see her in the anime!
6- Hiro Sohma
Time to be a Man by The Airborne Toxic Event - “And it’s time to be a man, Tell me how does that go?”
My bastard childdd <33 He is such an asshole and such a sweetie at the same time. His whole inner struggle of not feeling like a good enough man for Kisa is so heartwhelming and I think it really makes sense to the type of person he is. The flashbacks of him telling Akito how he loves Kisa and the feeling of uncertainty and impotency when seeing the girl he loves being hurt by his actions and wanting to be good enough for her even though he is more than enough sdfghjasd. I am also a softie for older brothers who love their families *cough cough* spoiler alert: Momiji *cough cough* that I love me one angry boi
5- Hatsuharu Sohma
4 Seasons by Rex Orange County - “I saw myself as less and you so high above me”
Cow boil! apart from the fact that I love love loveeee Haru’s design, I think he is also such a well build character! He is not only supportive of everyone (aka the loves of his life, Rin and Yuki xDD) but he is so interesting! His split personalities give him a cool trait (even though dark Haru doesnt appear much in the end of the manga) and I love how he helps everyone and makes sure those he loves are protected at all cost and happy. He is Rin and Yuki’s fan club stan leader and I am co-leader so we been stanning aye
4- Hatori Sohma
Fireflies by Owl City - “I'm weird 'cause I hate goodbyes, I got misty eyes as they said farewell”
Boooooy the next four to come are my absolute favorties and I would die for their happiness and love so *takes big breathe* I LoVE hAtORi sOhMAAa. To be honest when we first meet him I didnt like him much. I thought he was your usual dark deep character who doesnt talk much because he is too cool for everyone (which, he is) and that was that. But boi was I in for a riDE. His story about having to erase the memories from the woman he loves is one of the ones I cried through the most. I put myself in his shoes and wonder if I had to erase the memory of the person I loved the most, make them forget they ever met me, all our happy times, sad times, angry times.... No matter what its one of the most saddening moments and the whole scene is heartbreaking, which makes me love Hatori even more for the fact of how strong he is and selfless. He puts himself before others and he need to know he also deserves happiness and I am glad in the end he got it because homeboy needed a break ;w;. I also adore Ayame’s relationship with him xDD, he is like his idol and big same.
3- Kyo Sohma
This song saved my Life by Simple Plan - “Sometimes it feels like nobody gets me, Trapped in a world where everyone hates me”
Top three babyyyy. We have now my angry cat boi™. I mentioned it before but going into the reboot firsthand without reading the manga nor watching the first anime, I thought Kyo was going to be my absolute favorite character. I knew he would be the angry boi who was soft inside and probably had a tragic backstory™ that made him act the way he did and I am a sucker for those types of characters. And I love Kyo, I really do, specially when we find out more about his struggles and past. The exclusion he felt throughout his life for being the cat, the abandonment, feeling like he had no one and was ready to die because he didn't have any source of genuine happiness (well, apart from Kazuma ya know but stillll). Then he finds Tohru, the girl he promised to protect, the one that reminded him of the woman that helped him out all those years ago and I just.... poetic cinema at its finest. Kyo and Tohru make one of my favorite couples and I love how flustered and In absolute l o v e he is with her and Kyo is great man....
2- Yuki Sohma
Nandemonaiya by RADWIMPS - “Crying even when you're happy, Smiling even when you're feeling lonely”
THIS WAS ONE OF THE HARDEST DECISIONS OF MA ENTIRE WEEB CAREER SO EXCUSE WHILE I SCREAM. Yuki Sohma won my heart and entire soul throughout the series. I liked him from the start but he wasn't my favorite favorite at the beginning you know? I thought he was isolated and thats why he didn't have much friends and he was perfect and what not but boi was I wrong and happy about it. I think one of the reasons Yuki is one of my favorite characters in fruits basket is how much I can see myself in him. Having the constant need of perfection while also wanting to connect with others but finding it hard is something I personally struggle with and every time we learned a little bit about his backstory my heart broke. Everything Yuki had to go through, the rejection, the isolation, understanding that you are loved and not a burden, falling in love with someone, finding that figure of a mother/friend he always yearned for.... The complexity of Yuki’s character is astounding and I love my rat boi so so much.... When he joins the student council, finding his little group of friends and opening up to a more carefree and true Yuki, forgiving those around him and going and eye- YuKI IS MY BABY RAT BOI AND STAN HIM OR PERISH FROM HERE ;w;
1- Momiji Sohma
Eine Kleine by Rachie - “If I were to go through life living just to take somebody else's place, Then I would rather have been born as a pebble, living out my peaceful days “
*Clears throat* *trumpets sounds intensify* *stands on podium* I LOVE MOMIJI SOHMA WITH ALL MY HEART AND HE MUST BE PROTECTED AT ALL COSTS. Thats it. Thats what I want you to get out of this post. I don't know if this is maybe an unpopular opinion-ish but Momiji’s backstory of his mother rejecting him, saying awful things, him having to accept being forgotten by his mother and sister whom he loved, not even being able to live with his family, is one of the most heartbreaking ones of fruits basket. Maybe its like what I said with Hiro and I am a sucker for big brothers that love their families, the sad smile of Momiji, my baby, angel, perfection when he sees his family and not being able to be with them, him loving Tohru but letting her go and be with Kyo because its her happiness that matters to him and I am-..... The selflessness of Momiji and how much of a sweetheart he is, his heart of gold and always being there for those around him, that moment where Akito was looking for Tohru and he got hurt trying to defend her.... Momiji is one of my all time favorite characters. He is a precious bean and I will never not shut up about my love for ma boi <333
Anyways that was long and ramble but I just needed to shout this somewhere because I've been missing they //rip

RFA+V&Saeran hcs for a MC that is really sweet and nice and all but is a total bitch when she's sleepy? Like, she would try to sleep and be like 'can you keep it down love?
“What happend to my sweet and kind girlfriend?” QAQ feat. the RFA & Co.
ZEN
- at first he would be super confusied
- “B-but darling-” “No darling. Just let me fucking sleep, Zen.”
- Would be awake all night, thinking What did I do wrong, why is she mad at me;;
- in the next morning, Zen would bring her breakfast to the bed so she won’t be mad anymore
- but surprise, surprise when MC woked up she was like:”Oh, good morning, Zen! You made me breakfast? Oh, you’re so sweet...!”
- and Zen would ask himself if all of this was just a dream
Yoosung★
- S.O.S huston, I have a scary girlfriend!;; that would most likely the first thing that comes into Yoosung’s mind when MC gave him the death glare because he wanted to talk about his last LOLOL-tournament although MC claimed that she wants to sleep
- he has so much respect for her but doesn’t know if it’s just respect or respect and fear of her
- never ever he would dare to talk to her again when she wants to sleep
- MC would be confused at first but in the end she would be like “Nah, at least I can sleep peacefully”
- from time to time Yoosung has luck and MC isn’t that tired so they can exchange a few words while cuddling in his bed
Jaehee Kang
- would probably be the same, not as bitchy as MC but damn annoyed
- so they both won’t talk with each other that much in the evening
- but every morning they would drink a coffee together and MC would be smiling like a ray of sunshine
- and the days would pass by peacefully
- because both of them know how annoying it can be when other people (cough cough Jumin cough cough) think, they could disturb their sleep
Jumin Han
- because Elizabeth 3rd would be similar to MC when it comes to disturbing their sleep he would be used to it very quickly
- he probably would even buy a giant luxus suit with a big fluffy bed just for his MC
- so MC will never be angry at him
- but he will be lonely sometimes
- and that are the nights when he sneeks into her bed to embrase her
- luckily she notice him not until she wakes up in the morning and is embarressed because since when does he lie here
707
- this f*cking evil bastard
- of course he knows how bitchy MC can be when she wants to sleep, this dude watched her long enough
- but he wouldn’t care
- no, Seven would annoy the shit out of MC just for fun
- but usually not enough for MC to really explode
- because when this happens she wouldn’t talk to him for days and he couldn’t stand it when his beautyful MC just smiles at other people and not at him
V
- he would be very surprised at the first time she yells at him in this super bitchy tone:”Keep quiet, I want to sleep!”
- but he is such a nice boyfriend
- so he will respect her wish and would silently fall asleep while holding her in his arms
- and from there on he would make her a cup of hot milk with honey or a cup of warm cacao before she goes to bed
- so she can have warm and sweet dreams
Unknown
- much more worse than MC when he don’t have enough sleep
- there are very few days when he actually wanted to talk to her before they sleep but on this one day when things gone wrong and she hissed at him because she was damn tired he would just look at her totally annoyed:”Well, then good night”
- and would just turn around without saying any more words
- and MC is like “hmpf” and goes to sleep too
- but deep down she would be like “Ahhhh, he hates me” screaming
- but in reality Saeran just thinks “This girl is like me. Neat”

Okay, then how about a show I know you have watched: SU!
haven’t heard of it | absolutely never watching| might watch | currently watching| dropped| hated it | meh| a positive okay| liked it| liked it a lot!| loved it| a favorite
don’t watch period| drop if not interested within 2-3 episodes| give it a go, could be your thing| 5 star recommendation
fav characters: Ugh, I love them all, it feels like picking between children. My go to for favourite is Peridot, but I also love characters like Connie, Pearl, Steven, Lapis, etc.least fav characters: I honestly don’t dislike any characters on this show, and if I do they’re so insignificant I’ve already thought about them. I probably would’ve forced myself to pick someone like Marty or Kevin, but now after Kevin Party I even like Kevin dammit. :Vfav relationship: Oh wow, another tough one. I love how Steven manages to have an interesting relationship with pretty much everyone he interacts with, and all the relationships that don’t involve Steven are great too. If I had to pick I’d probably go Steven and Connie though, they just have such great chemistry and are able to be really close even with implied romantic feelings. Not to mention they get me the most emotional. XDfav moment: Ugh, this is so hard. My gut reaction is the ending to I am my Mom because of how tragic it is on so many levels, but seriously this show is filled with great moments and it’s really hard to pick just one.headcanons/theories: - Lapis is shady as fuck and she’s hiding something, people seem to really underestimate how dark and powerful she can be. I mean, even if we’ve just gotten to see a bit of her view on the Diamonds, we still don’t even know why she has yet to comment anything on Rose Quartz or mistake Steven for her. This is part of why the Blue Diamond fusion theory appeals to me, since even though it sounds outlandish on paper the analysis provided by @radioactivesupersonic and @mollinosis really suggests if the Crewniverse did something like this it would be a pretty compelling and emotional story. I mean, secret former co-matriarch or not, there’s a lot about Lapis we don’t know yet.- Rose was most certainly involved in the shattering of Pink Diamond, people appear to have taken “Rose isn’t responsible” at face value and just assumed it could’ve been anyone in charge. For what the show is going for Rose really still makes the most sense to have done the deed, even if she simply say masterminded it and Pearl did the dirty work (I’m positive Pearl was involved somehow, given how she refuses to speak when the subject comes up and her distress around it).- On the subject of Rose, I like the idea that she was Pink Diamond before faking her death, fight me. :V I’m not banking too hard on the theory, but I feel like it’s just got so much potential to shake things up narratively. Like, Rose would then have been avoiding confrontation and ruining things with everyone from the very beginning, even as a ruler, it just adds a whole new layer of messed up of what Rose has been doing.- Steven is going to have to come to terms with his reviving from death powers at some point and figure out how to be responsible with them.unpopular opinion: - Whenever people say “I hate X character or episode,” I never agree, and it especially bugs me when people use subjective reasoning and claim to be objective with it. Even if I have knee jerk reactions to things, I still try to think things through.- I like the slice of life episodes, and think they’re important thematically.- Lapidot is an overrated ship and I was not surprised at all when I saw what went down in Raising the Barn.- The quirk of having storyboarders’ styles influencing how the characters look is fine and not an issue, and it’s especially grating when people use this as “objective proof” the show sucks. At most, I only find it a bit distracting when two obviously different styles are shown within a close time frame (eg Raven and Lauren), but even there it’s really just a nitpick and nothing like the show breaking thing it claims to be.- Lapis is way darker and more interesting than people give her credit for, they always reduce her to either “waiter waifu” or “lol inconsistent, bad writing,” but she’s so much more interesting than that.- Steven’s perspective isn’t always right, people sometimes take what we see for granted and get angry at things that can really be solved by looking beyond the fact that we only see the world through his eyes.- The one sidedness people have in discussions about which character was in the wrong in X episode drive me nuts, because it’s always tried to be framed as a black and white issue when it pretty much never is.- Aquamarine is really fun and one of my favourite antagonists on the show, not just because of her general personality but also how she doesn’t even seem to want to be there and yet is arguably one of the most successful in doing what she’s done.- Onion isn’t evil and he is my sonion, give him a break guys.- #GivePeridotBackHerLimbEnhancers2k17. No, seriously, Peridot’s limb enhancers did nothing wrong and she’s allowed to have them back, they make things way more convenient for her and she doesn’t need to be eternally stuck without them just because “lol technology evil.”how’d you find it: People raving about it on tumblr, first when Jailbreak came out but then more discussion piqued my interest.random thoughts: Cartoon Network needs to sort out their airing schedule.

favourite character tag !
tagged by @vault-emblem!
Rules: List ten of your favourite characters in ten different fandoms and then tag ten other victims to do the same!
(i dont even know if i have 10 fandoms rn)
1- stefan (fire emblem 9/10)
this one was kinda obvious. i dont know how to explain my love for him, but he ties a lot into the lore, fits the ‘strange friendly hermit’ type and the cool teacher kind, plus being a very good unit and also mysterious. hes not the kind of character you find often!
2- silver (pokemon gsc/hgss)
i just love him. he was one of my first videogame crushes, his character arc has yet to be topped in any pokemon game (or game in general), hes a jerk rival done right, and frlg and hgss added so much more dept to him, and acts as a bridge between the johto and kanto games. his arc shows that, no matter how low yoiuve fallen, how evil you are, you can change for the better.
3- zuko (atla)
again, hello childhood crush. hes very similar to silver. his arc made me cry as a child and still makes me emotional now. his character growth should be used as a model for all redeemed villain characters
(also still salty he didnt end up with katara)
4- princess leia organa (star wars)
i got into star wars very late, just before tfa came out. from what everyone told me, leia was just the princess type, so i didnt have high hopes for her.
i was never happier to be proven wrong.
leia is who every girl should strive to be. shes strong, charismatic, and yet kind, with her snarky personality spicing everything up. she is a great role model, character and icon. i cant exactly put into words my love for her, but its a lot.
5- tonbokiri (touken ranbu)
this might be inaccurate bc i only watched katsugeki sorry im a fake im just a sucker for gentle giants types. hes easily the strongest of the second unit and yet is the quietest, gentlest one. his fight with the ootachi made me emotional, and seeing him overcome it in the last episode almost made me cry. i love how he acts as kind of a mediator in the group. i cant wait to see more of him as i get deeper into tkrb hell!
6- geralt of rivia ( the witcher books)
there is another archetype of character arc i love, and its “lone wolf suddenly grows to care for a small child”. and geralt is the best example of it. his particular view of the world, the contrast between how he acts and appears versus his nice personality, and how he grows to care for ciri and acts as her father figure makes him a very multi-faceted, interesting protagonist and character.
7- heartstone (magnus chase and the gods of asgard)
i just care for him so much. his character arc about accepting himself is lovely, hes an endearing character and you can see he cares deeply for magnus and co. in a book full of great characters, hes easily my fav
(help im running out of people ill just do more fe games)
8- azel (fire emblem 4)
i can relate to azel a lot. we are both always overshadowed by people we care for, are weak mentally and phisically, and didnt grow up in the best of enviroments. yet his resolve to go on is inspiring, and his soft and gentle personality is very close to mine. despite everything he remained strong, and according to kaga’s notes, despite all that happened between him and arvis he still loved his brother so much, and still believed in him being good.
9- mareeta (fire emblem 5)
talking about characters who go through a lot! mareeta is one of my favorite characters ever. the premise of her character is a pretty epic one: the daughter of a fallen prince with special blood which gives them mastery of teh sword, who was abducted bt slave traders and then saved by a mysterious amnesiac woman (herself a fallen princess), raised in a small village with the protagonist (ANOTHER fallen prince), then taken away again and forced to fight her mother, saved in secret by her father, and now out to save her mom. and yet she is just a normal girl, who just wants to be with the woman who took care of her for so many years. even her desire to get stronger is born out of guilt over having eyvel captured. shes just a normal teen girl: she fails, cries, gets angry, suffers a lot (this is jugdral after all), and yet she never gives up. she keeps going and going, despite all she goes through. and in the end she has her happy ending: she returns to fiana with her mother, reunites with her father, becomes a famous swordmaster. her story is one of the most interesting in jugdral, its hard to not get attached to her.
10- giratina (pokemon dppt)
hey, did you know that the-banished-one is a subtle reference to them? no? good bc if you did then it would be embarassing
but now ive embarassed myself on here enough to revela it
i just. fcking love giratina. they have great lore, a great role, great stats, great type combination, great design, great E V E R Y T H I N G. plus the concept of a god of balance and antimatter is??? just fucking cool????? plus i love them not being good or evil. theyre just there, doing their antimatter balance thing. not doing anuthing bad? good, giratina is happy. youre fucking up with the space-time continuum? too bad, youre gonna get sucked into a black hole into a world where gravity isnt a thing and everything is different from our reality
(also just how cool is the distortion world??? a lot, thats how much)
also i loved the giratina movie. i loved taht trilogy in general, but the giratina movie is extra good. smol shaymin becoming friends with a giant eldritch abomination??? sign me tf up!!!!
i tag @this-is-the-light-of-zwei, @jugdraldefender, @sanguine-daydreams, @02nz, @spooky-soleil and just anyone who wants to do this

Sang Woo, attachment style, BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder) and Yoon Bum.
I have seen many readers suspecting Bum to have BPD, but I also believe Sang Woo may suffer from BPD. As someone else had done a very detailed overview of Sang Woo and BPD (Part 1, Part 2), I’ll be quite brief about my own stand (and support) on this.
(Warning: this mini essay of mine will undoubtedly be messy as I did not plan for smooth segue nor am I that organised to plan an essay before writing. This applies to my academic works as well; I’m more of a let’s-just-write-and-see-where-it-goes kind of person. Do not be like me. You will regret it by the time you’re half way through the essay and you have no idea what you’re talking).
Now while BPD is associated with self-harming behaviour and ‘clinging’ dependency, they may also funnel their aggression to external environment (i.e. externalised aggression (EA)). Individual with BPD exhibiting EA can (note it is in bold) perpetuate domestic violence, assault of those who are familiar to the individuals (e.g. friends, acquaintance) and aggressive criminal behaviour such as murder in the form of familicide and serial killing (this is very, very rare. Its rarity level is on par to unicorn) (Gross, 2007; Sansone et al., 2012).
Many men suffering from BPD are more likely to be misdiagnosed as anti-social personality disorder (ASPD) compared to women who are more correlated with BPD, although comorbidity (co-occurrence of more than one disorder) between BPD and ASPD can and do happen (For review, see Bateman et al., 2008).
It is interesting to note that many clinicians calls for BPD to be considered as not as a personality disorder, but as an attachment disorder (unfortunately for many neither DSM-V(1) or ICD-10(2) has not made this change). Many clinicians suggest the BPD’s core psychopathology arises within the domain of interpersonal relations (e.g. intolerance of aloneness) (See, Adler, 1993; Benjamin, 1986; Gunderson, 1984, 1996; Masterson, 1972)
Our attachment we form with our primary caregiver as a baby provides a basis to how we navigate our relationship with others as adults (Bowlby, 1969). Many empirical evidences suggests insecure and to some extent, avoidant and disorganised attachment are prevalent amongst individuals with BPD (e.g. Meyer et al., 2001).
I believe Sang Woo fits the criteria for insecure attachment. While we cannot actually turn Sang Woo into a baby and into a room with a two-way mirror, bring back his dead mother and have her go in and out of the room while observing a stranger’s and his mother’s interaction with baby Sang Woo as well as his own response and interaction with them (AKA Strange Situation experiment designed to measure attachment) (Ainsworth & Bell, 1970), we can see estimate from the glimpses we have seen of his past interaction with his mother and more importantly, his social skills as adults and particularly his relationship with Bum, we can ‘guess’ his attachment to his mother was most likely to be insecure.
For more information about the experiment ‘Strange situation’: Experiment video
Random trivia: Today, while this experiment certainly gave great deal of insight into potential how the bond humans develop, this is considered very unethical from modern point of view. One of experimenter’s ethical guides is bringing no physical or mental harm to the participant and in the video; babies are obviously in high distress.
Another example is ‘Little Albert’ who the experimenters wanted to find out about classical/operant conditioning so decided to traumatise an innocent baby named Albert (No, not Albert as in the Albert Wesker like in the Resident Evil haha, yeah sorry I’m bad at making jokes) and they made him develop phobia against furry objects as well as animal (e.g. dogs). Unfortunately for our Albert, he grew up to develop wide range of phobia including furry objects. His parent was paid only $1 for Albert’s participation and sadly, Albert (not his real name) passed away at the age of 6.
What is an insecure attachment?
Ainsworth (1979) put forward the ‘caregiver sensitivity hypothesis’ to explain for different attachment types. It suggest child’s attachment type depends on their primary caregiver (i.e. mothers usually) behaviour toward the child.
Insecure attachment is more likely to form if a mother is less ‘sensitive’, ‘emotionally available’ ‘inconsistent’ and ‘attentive’ to the child. This meant sometimes the child’s needs were met while sometimes they were ignored by the primary caregiver therefore the child come to believe communication of needs has no influence on their parent/guardian.
Children with insecure attachment showed conflicting behaviours mirroring their caregiver’s. The children are often feels distrustful or suspicious of their mother, but they also act desperate toward and cling to their mothers and highly distressed when the mother leaves them, even for a while but when the mother approaches them, they ignore or even, push them away.
These children then grow up to have a preoccupied attachment patterns that resembles the pathology of BPD which are the need for reassurance and approval, excessive dependency on their partner or someone they are close to, fear of rejection and are reject-sensitive etc.
Now we have seen that Sang Woo came from a very abusive household and seeing this manhwa is Korean, we can assume that his household was a very typical Korean household: patriarchal household (in Sang Woo’s case with angry father) and emphasis on the mother’s role as a provider of emotional wealth and rearing of the children. As a Korean, this picture is very familiar; of course, patriarchal household =/= Eastern-restricted custom.
Tumblr media
We can clearly see his mother was very protective and very likely to be the primary caregiver of Sang Woo from her husband and his father’s wrath. Maternal instinct to protect their child is a very strong and compelling force; however the mother also knew that she has to be alive to be able to protect Sang Woo from his father.
It is most likely that the Sang Woo’s father threatened to abuse Sang Woo (more and in worse way than he already does) if his mother don’t do what he says. This could very likely mean that Sang Woo’s father wanted thing done in a way he likes, for example, wanting no signs of having a presence of a child living within the house. This puts huge pressure on the mother who knows if she doesn’t do what he says, his wrath would fall on her and then on Sang Woo who in the father’s eyes, ‘the root of all problems.’
To try and hide signs of children in the house is very difficult; Sang Woo, who probably wanted to play with toys freely out on the floor, want to cry, want to play, want to run around, just generally want to be a child and telling the child not to be a child is something children won’t understand because their mental capacity isn’t as developed as adults.
Because of this, sometimes mothers tend to resort restricting their children often in harsh way and quite interestingly, the child comes to feel more angry and resentful of non-abusing parent than toward the abuser themselves. So Sang Woo, as a child, would probably have been very confused as he did not know whether the next time he saw his mother looking at him, it’d be a loving hug or her being cold towards him.
Tumblr media
There were hints Sang Woo might have murdered his mother so it could be that, Sang Woo felt betrayed and confused at his mother who were supposed to be his protector, the only one in the world who understood and loved him acting in a way he saw was no better than his father, who he probably remembers as being nothing but violent, unloving, neglectful to the point Sang Woo probably sees him as a stranger who also happened to live with him and his mother.
We don’t know what happened to Sang Woo’s mother, but if he did murder her it could have been that she was thinking of abandoning Sang Woo and her husband, unable to bear such living no longer and Sang Woo snaps, or her leaving him to his father for another man, or he killed her because as he grew up he came to see her as a weak mother who did not love her son as much as she perhaps did of her husband; who was so weak and selfish that she didn’t even leave Sang Woo’s father earlier or when she had the chance to take him away from the abuse if she really loved Sang Woo.
He probably thought that being in the street, starving and cold and with nowhere else to go was much more better than being under a roof that was no better than hell. Because he’d still have his mother who had proven she loved him and that’s all he wanted and needed.
BPD + ASPD = Perfect Match or Chaos?
Now this brings to the question since there are conflicts whether Bum suffers from BPD or Sang Woo suffers from ASPD and let’s say, for the sake of this argument, Bum suffers from BPD and Sang Woo has ASPD.
How would the two mental disorder clash and if they end up having a relationship, could they have mutual respect for one another and make the relationship work or would they eventually cannibalise each other with their deceitful nature?
I, for the life of me, cannot remember where, but I read somewhere that pathologies of BPD’s subconsciously need and seek those with ASPD and such setup may work (“Opposite attracts”).
Such relationship can become very pathological that resembles a strange, unhealthy cat and mouse game and this is a course typical in such relationship (think of Joker and Harley Quinn).
Pushing buttons to see how they respond; making use of their fear of abandonment against them; knowing they won’t actually leave and would just keep taking it. It’d be a continuous circle through idealisation and devaluation.
·         One (ASPD) takes nothing personally (e.g. Borderline accusation/insults); the other (BPD) takes everything personally.
·         Psychopathic detachment can diffuse Borderline reactive rage
·         BPD extreme emotion can be sufficiently ‘loud’ to penetrate psychopathic flattened affect
·         BPD idealises and feeds into the narcissism and need to be approved that ASPD has.
·         The non-judgmental approach of a ASPD can counter black/white thinking of a Borderline, in the ‘quiet’ times when they’re receptive to logic.
·         Because of ASPD’s ‘fearlessness’ attributes, they are not so bothered about the ‘walking on eggshells’ aspect of BPD.
·         The ASPD love bombs BPD, flooding the BPD with affection and making them think as though they are special, ‘consoling’ BPD’s fear of abandonment desires.
·         The BPD might be more oblivious to gas-lighting(3) and dowsing. Their fear of abandonment and senses off self-emptiness (which is a trait in ASPD also) and their unstable self-image can be ‘easy’ for ASPD to manipulate.
·         BPD may appreciate the optimism and drive of ASPD.
·         BPD and ASPD tend to be reckless and impulsive, but this can mean accepting of the others impulsiveness.
·         Those BPD may also be more desensitised and have higher threshold for the abuses (abuses are not confined to physical, it can also mean emotional), as they typically do not internalize things as other individual (whether they have BPD or depression or have no known diagnosis) would internalise the same situation.
·         But ASPD will abandon (eventually) and with the abandonment issue of BPD, it will not end well. But if they are stabilised by that point, they’ll usually breathe a sigh of relief as they chuck up the deuces.
BUT! This is not to say those with ASPD or BPD or other mental disorder will end up killing or doing some sort of horrendous crimes or acts! Certain portrayal of certain mental disorder does not mean everyone will follow that same path.
A researcher called Rosenhan conducted an experiment called ‘On being sane in insane places’. Long story short, he had mentally healthy patients (pseudopatients) going in for a psychiatric examination and told them to tell the doctors they were experiencing psychotic symptoms.
After they were admitted, Rosenhan had instructed them prior to the institutionalisation that they should start acting ‘normal’ and ‘sane’ and see how many doctors/staff noticed and realised they were actually not mentally ill. No doctors or staff noticed during their stays, ranging from 7 to 52 days although the other patients quickly noticed they were mentally healthy and wasn’t mentally ill.
The pseudopatients noticed how when they began to act ‘normal’, the staff and doctors labelled their behaviours and acts as some sort of psychotic symptoms. For example, a group of bored patients waiting outside the cafeteria for lunch early were said by a doctor to his students to be experiencing “oral-acquisitive” psychiatric symptoms.
Lesson from this study: don’t generalise what you see or heard of someone’s behaviour or actions with certain mental illness to other people who also have same disorder.
A/N: Planning on writing my ‘In the defense of Alois Trancy’ next - the character is horribly misunderstood and judged.
Terminology
(1)   DSM: Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and offers a common language and standard criteria for the classification of mental disorders. The current updated edition is the 5th edition published in 2013 (DSM-V). Trivia: Majority of funding for DSM comes from pharmaceutical company. Hmmm…
(2)   ICD: The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems is a coding of diseases and signs, symptoms, abnormal findings, complaints, social circumstances and external causes of injury or diseases, as classified by the World Health Organization (WHO). Currently in its 10th revision. Trivia: The ICD is actually the official mental health system for the US, but even many professionals do not realise this due to the dominance of the DSM.
(3)   Gas-lighting: manipulation of someone by psychological means into doubting their own sanity. This is similar to an operant conditioning (rewarding wanted behaviour, punishing unwanted behaviour) observed by B.F. Skinner. It induces the feeling of learned helplessness and erode their logicality by manipulating someone to think what they are experiencing is ‘not so bad’, causing gradual acceptance of abuse. Synonymous to ‘grooming’.
