ok so disclaimer that i am very poorly read in this fandom bc (1) i am a slow fic reader generally especially (2) during pandemic times and especially ESPECIALLY (3) when i am using a lot of brainpower on writing fic, like, i have not read much in general and nothing at all now since idk like november? maybe longer it’s been a WHILE. also i have deeply idiosyncratic taste and highly specific personal dealbreakers that are not always to do with, like, “quality” lmao. so probably others would be better able to answer this and are MORE THAN WELCOME TO CHIME IN ON THIS POST! that said here’s some things that come to mind from what i have read:

pretty good year, hth/ @spiders-hth-is-an-outlier - this is i think the only total AU i’ve read? and while it is extremely specifically rewarding to magicians fans i also think it totally stands on its own as simply a beautiful and aching and sweet novel about falling in love and growing up. the tags call it a romantic comedy about depression, which immediately piqued my interest; you could also say it’s a story about love and pain. it’s funny and sexy and wise and raw and radiates love from every single sentence, i wanted to live in it forever.

moving into some season 1 AUs where all you need to know about the show is really Magic School, But It Fucks, be kind by longnationalnightmare is one of the few definitive Fandom Classics out there, and that’s because it is both insanely hot and exquisitely well-characterized, a fic about sex that’s secretly, if you’re paying attention, a fic about doing things right

i feel it in my body, i know it in my mind, @ameliajessica - this is a very sweet first date story that really sparkles with chemistry & care

beautiful something, @portraitofemmy - this is a really special story to me, i think because its mission is so in keeping with the key queliot concept of The Beauty Of All Life. it’s a story about what happens when the worst thing that’s ever happened to you and the best thing that’s ever happened to you are happening at the exact same time, and it’s about deciding to be brave enough to keep your hard open when it’s scary and when it hurts.

my lonely heart calls, @hmgfanfic - so i am obseeeeeeeeessed with this fic. like. OBSESSED. i love it so much it causes me physical pain. unbelievably clever conceit + astonishingly delightful dialogue + agonizingly good character work for both eliot and quentin, like, they’re just so well understood and conveyed and loved by this fic, and just so.... them. they’re just so them!!! also it’s screamingly funny and like the most thrillingly romantic thing i’ve read in my life.

ok and now some post-s4 stuff that i feel like you can just Vibe with! my crown is called content, cartographies/ @honeybabydichotomy - this is another fic that’s like, yeah all that “happens” in it is “people have sex,” but it’s so well-characterized and chock-full of teeny little bombs of delights that it’s a really rich and vibrant story. also the sex is great and incredibly romantic, so. also recommend living room, ny, in which quentin and eliot have emotional conversations, which we all know is what true romance is

bury the iron in the backroads, @propinquitous​ - this is a love story that is also about hating your dad, and, therefore, the most perfect work of fiction of all time. a beautiful tale of love and trauma that also has a dialogue exchange in a sex scene that will haunt me forever until i die. also extremely recommend the us sorry animals series, which is a gorgeous set of musings on what happens when you are in love but also your brain is still a nuclear accident zone, because of the trauma

unwish, waveleafcloud - ok so this one is like probably the most canon-dependent of the ones i’ve listed.... but it’s also cleverly plotted in its own right in a way that feels like it stands on its own, and also insaaaaanely romantic, so i am putting it here anyway. actually you might also wanna read their story reconnect, which is like an 18k series retell from q’s perspective + queliot happy ending, and so therefore might like, catch you up on the most important bits as you continue your adventures

everyone everywhere should read the stories hetrez wrote for this fandom, which are all completely perfect. from a quentin/eliot perspective, yes and yes and maybe yes and get loud are two stories about sex that are also stories about finding ways to come back together after life has torn you so thoroughly apart, and are sweet and smart and sexy; get loud in particular is also hilarious. the author’s note for get loud says “It's also kind of a sex farce and kind of a serious look at the way PTSD manifests in the body? I don't know, The Magicians has broken me.” which i think about every single day because nothing else has so succinctly yet completely captured what the magicians has done to me. the dreamers is established-relationship future fic in which quentin and eliot have a fight that is SOOOO PERFECTLY ARTICULATED i’m mad someone came up with it who wasn’t me. a partial age of miracles is like plottier and broader in scope than just A Queliot Story (although it is, also, UNBELIEVABLY ROMANTIC), and another one that is more canon-dependent than others on this list, but you should read it anyway because it is the best story in the world. you’re smart you can use context clues. your reward is getting to read things like this:

Alice said, "I shouldn't be thinking like this. I should," she rolled over onto her stomach, somehow keeping the vodka bottle upright, and muttered into the comforter. "It should be this beautiful pink-tinged softcore baby deer lovemaking, like in a Swedish porno or something."

Eliot turned his head and stared at her. "Excuse me?"

She tilted her head up at what looked like an excruciating angle, and frowned at him. "Because he's dead," she said. Then her expression crumpled, and she squeezed her eyes shut. recently i realized that for years now i have finally been happy being single! yearning for a relationship has just... gone away. (this is very healthy for me and im not ready to get into my emotionally scarring backstory just yet)

however, i do be writing fanfic and 😳😳😳love do be looking cute. so imma just throw out some love + intimacy concepts

so i struggle with writing intimacy in a way that shows how it actually feels

i feel like when you write in a space like this for a while there are certain words and phrases that we just commonly use that don’t get at the exact feelings of things

really like, sometimes writing in such a big community diminishes creativity and there are so many things I can’t explain now

anyway this post doesn’t make much sense it’s just me talking about love and telling all my secrets

🐻 (bear emoji) with me bc this is like a diary entry and i really exposed myself with this. I can’t even explain it idk

love things i love:

the heat of skin? it can feel just under the way the sun feels when it’s lighting up your skin and it’s so hot but you just can’t move because you’re so content. because maybe the sun is burning. but the wind is also blowing, and the birds are also singing.

when you’re cuddling with someone who normally shaves, but it’s a soft day and you’re just in big clothes and maybe sweatpants or shorts and you’re on a cloudy place like a couch and your skin is on theirs and you can feel the gentle stubble of their skin because they haven’t shaved in a bit

^^^just similarly to that i like moments that are unguarded. moments that you wouldn’t get with someone if they didn’t trust you so much. someone trusting you with seeing maybe scars on them or with their hair not done

i like to lay on people and also to have people lay on me

wearing the clothes of someone you love...having sheets or clothes or post shower bathrooms smell sweeter with the scent with them after they’ve been there a while

especially w women i love how some things are just so connected and unspoken. even the gentlest man may not understand something after years of explanation that a woman can understand from a woman with a few vague words.

{pain is not fun but when someone understands it? having a lover who will not hold your pain against you in small ways, but someone who will even let you have your bad days but be there with you through them}

i remember the first person i thought I loved was so bad to me but I didn’t know any other way, so the second person I thought i loved was so good to me, but it was only the bare minimum of healthy and respectful

{^^so what i want is to receive and also mainly to give love that is healthy and sweet without asking and that never needs a moment for you to pause and think that it’s so good, because there isn’t anything extraordinary about it. it is just what it should be because we always love and mind each other’s feelings and sensitivities}

when you reach out for someone and they know what youre asking for when you do. i use the word “knowingly” but it isn’t consciously. they react with their body first maybe even with their soul.

do you ever adjust your hand in someone’s hand and they pull away completely because they think that’s what you’re doing? i want a lover someday who knows when I’m only shifting closer

{I want to be the kind of lover that knows what tears are for talking about and what ones mean you need to be held and which ones mean you need to be alone and I want to be healthy enough to be able to leave you alone even if I care very much and want to help}

I really love when you shift together when cuddling with someone and it’s just right and that’s the comfortable spot

or when you wake up and you’re skin to skin and that spot is so hot you’re nearly sweating together but it’s just so warm and sweet and they’re still asleep so you can’t bear to move

so anyway fruits are very romantic of course so here are some lover fruits for no reason: peaches, nectarines, strawberries + apples only when sliced right then and there at a picnic

someone getting something for you that is only two steps away but you’re just soooo comfy and they just do it because they are sweet

someone staying up until you get home

{someone loving you for you and not making an idea out of you. someone loving something because you love it and they love you}

someone purposely learning more about something you’re passionate about or letting you go on and on and listening intently

there’s finishing sentences, but that isn’t always nice. sometimes when you can’t find the words, the most meaningful thing someone can do is patiently wait for you to find them.

I love when you’re eating a shared meal and someone notices you looking at what they’re serving themselves and they just wordlessly hand it to you

from a good post: “If one of us loses our cool will the other deescalate the issue or make it worse? Can we both lose our cool without blaming eachother for every little thing? open communication is so beautiful

{there’s something so raw about feeling weird in a moment and being able to say it. when energy is weird and you can just say hm I don’t like how this feels and your lover can agree or even ask you why.}

how i show love:

my love languages I think have changed over the years I really love to do acts of service (and y’all probably gathered that touch is big for me)

I love to cook people breakfast

I love to shop at the store for the ingredients of a meal someone mentions missing

I like to wash fruit before it gets put where it goes because then the people I love who grab it straight from the bowl are already taken care of

I like making cards for special occasions like birthdays

I love hugs where you keep squeezing because you’re not ready for it to end

thinking also about people I’ve loved who aren’t comfortable with too much physical affection or any at all. of course you give people their space and you love them differently. sometimes they open up to you when they realize you respect their boundaries

It shouldn’t be that way because everyone should do that for everyone. but it is nice to be a safe space while we live in a world that is sometimes not nice. it’s nice to make people feel safe

the other day my friend who hated hugs and affection in middle school told me she loved me at the end of our phone call and I cried

on tumblr, there are certain acts. you can tell your friends when you love their art, you can reblog it. you can share things that remind you of them.

Another prediction is that Logan, realizing that SOMETHING bad just happened, and knowing that all his information on humans seems to be incorrect or at least not apply to this one, will go to Patton for advice on what to do regarding Virgil’s sudden change of behavior, and how to calm him down again. Cause Patton is the resident expert on Virgil.

I also imagine that Logan might keep his note taking to himself again for a bit, until Virgil believes that he’s not the bad kind of scientist.

I love that Virgil climbed on top of the tallest thing he could find, and I imagine that if it’s above everyone else’s usual eyelines, they each walk past him multiple times while they’re worriedly searching the ship for him.

I’m mostly imagining Virgil clinging to Patton like a lifeline and the other two aliens worrying for their tiny friend but Patton knows that Virgil is just scared and sings him the “calm down baby it’s okay I’m here” hatchling soothing song until Virgil calms down a little, and then still staying with him while explanations are had. They do not come out of the small space on top of the tallest appliance and Roman doesn’t like that but he’ll deal.

Now that I’m thinking about it more, one of the best ways for Logan to gain (at least a little bit of) Virgil’s trust would be for Virgil to see his honest reaction to what the other scientists did to him. Cause based on what I know of Logan, he would be horrified. And that might help Virgil to realize that Logan ISN’T LIKE those other scientists.

Honestly? Part Song Titles/Lyrics and part 'This Line I Wrote Sounds Kinda Pretentious for a Piss Fic... I'm Definitely Gonna Use It'. Or just a general theme. Or a pun. Looking at my fic list... there's a lot of puns in titles.

Tbh I rarely title things until I'm actually on the ao3 posting page so I just scramble to pull one out of my ass XD There's no real method to my madness

His words were abruptly cut off by a tightness around his throat, the grip clenching to restrict his airflow, little by little. While admittedly surprised, he didn't panic, merely studying what he could of the arm in his sightline. The metal tips of her scissors traced his Adam's apple, then slid up to dig into the flesh on the underside of his jaw. She didn't draw blood, but all it would take was a hint more pressure. Now that he was forced to lock eyes, she leaned in so that her breath flared in his face. 

"Kiss me like you mean it, pretty boy~" she commanded, leering down at him. She'd climbed onto the edge of the chair for better access, pressing their foreheads together. And, not-so coincidentally, pressed her left knee directly against his swollen abdomen. What breath she hadn't choked out of him was stolen in a pained wheeze, his vision spotting. Now, not only were his teeth swimming, his head was, and he loathed whatever noise of pleading had managed to escape his lips during his lack of focus. She removed both her hand and weapon from his neck, and he only took a moment to inhale before he shoved himself into as much of her as his binds would allow. Her chest, nearly flat enough to rival his own, pressed against him, and he blocked out her obnoxious sighs with a growl, tilting his head to smother her lips.

I swear any other time I'd have a whole list of my best stupid jokes and puns from my fics ready to fling at people but here I am, blanking as soon as I'm asked lmao. Isn't that always how it goes c': I had to dig through my ao3 and this is what I came up with, not sure if they're my ultimate faves bc I tend to pick favourites by the whole fic in general? The President could bite into her, tear her apart in any way she saw fit and gorge upon her, but this would never be a one time affair. She was going to leave her mark before she succumbed...

This is actually an interesting question to me because the answer really does vary depending on what your definition of 'popular' is. Do you measure it by hits? Audience interaction? Platform? I had too much fun clicking around the stats page to analyze that so have answers for different criteria:

The short history of this tumblr.

hey! I wanted to share something. I live in Brazil, as you know, but I don’t live at the famous states, like São Paulo, I tought it was important to say, so.

Well, I want to tell why I created this tumblr, so... Here it goes.

Something happend to me, something bad, and painful, and no, I didn’t lose anyone, I mean, I did, but it wasn’t a person or an animal, it was my skin. my leg skin. Maybe it’s strange saying it, but that’s it. I got into an accident with my brother and cut my leg really deep, so I had to stay in the hospital for 2 weeks and passed trough 2 surgerys, I suffered, a lot, I cried, and all I wanted was to get back home and watch the final episodes of Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo, bc of the accident, I could see it, but well, 3 days bf going to the hospital, I decided to see hwarang, and I met Hyungsik ( I didn’t finish hwarang until today haha ), I just fell in love with his character, he was so kind :( my mom liked him too, haha. So, I went to the hospital and passed all that 2 weeks away from the world, away from my best and only friend, Ângela, away from kdramas, away from everything. When you’re in this situaton, everything you want is your normal life back, and I was desesperated for it, I was so deep in sadness that my mom and my grandma tought I was into depression, but I wasn’t, it’s normal when your leg skin dies because of an inffection and you have to go through a surgery to get better. Anyway, I got out of the hospital, and the world was so different and strange, so I got sick and got back to hospital but got away (again) in the same day haha. From now, I was free to “live” my life, but well, there was a problem, I couldn’t walk. Actually, I could, but it was too hard, I needed support, I wasn’t independent anymore and that was so annoying and sad to me, I was mad, but after some days I started to walk by my self, in this time, I watched the drama that kind of change things to me, Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, everything I liked was there, a strong woman, who is independent, a male lead who is not tsundere (hate tsunderes!) and the second lead was ji soo, which is an actor that I love, even I didn’t like gook du (not much hehe). Okay, while I was watching this drama, I forgot life outside, forgot my leg, all I could think was what would happen in the next episode, and that was so good, damn, it was like I could escape reality, (in that time I “created” a sentence that was: reality sucks.). Okay, the drama was almost ending, and my second surgery was close, it was going to be in the day that the ep was realesed (friday), so, instead of thinking about the surgery, I thought: “Okay, so when I get out of the hospital all the episodes will be already subtitle, so it’s just watch, good!”. The surgery went well and I got out of the hospital one day before of what I expected, that was a good thing, and well, I watched the episodes and, okay,”what do I do now?”. I suffered. The surgery I went though, well, I don’t know the name in english, but in portuguese we call it “Enxerto”, it consists in taking skin from a part of your body and put it where the skin died. What I wasn’t waiting is that, the part where they took the skin HURTS A LOT, and yes, I cried of pain, but then the new episodes (and last), were realesed and I got happy again.

Sorry, this so long, more than I thought, but I never told my history to anyone, so... And love telling the details haha, let’s get faster.

When it ended (drama), I got kind of sad, but LOL(league of legends, the game, yeah), made it good to me for a while, but I wanted SWDBS, I missed my puppy couple, I missed Park Hyungsik voice and smile :( so, I decided to create this tumblr and make gifs, which is a thing that I love to do and makes me forget the reality too. I created this tumblr so I could post about him and SWDBS, this way, this drama that helped me so much in this terrible phase of my life, could get more recognition.

I know it’s long, but I thought I should share this with you, because, the reason I keep this tumblr it’s because of me, sounds selfish but it’s the true, being here, watching dramas, playing games, all of this makes me forget the terrible reality that I’m living, having my leg so hurtten and ugly (yes, it’s ugly, looks like frankenstein, ugh) (oh, by the way, it was my left leg)

But now, 2 months after all of this, I’m okay, even though it’s ugly, it doesn’t hurt and I can walk normally, I live my life wearing pants, so people can’t see, of couse, but I only used them before this too, so.

Anyway, thank you for the 500 followers, not a huge number, but it’s for me, just a problematic girl from a worldwide unknown state in the middle of Brazil, that cries a lot but also laughs and smiles because of hyungsik, thank you for all the support and for making my life better just with your clicks and sweet typed words :)

Fetishism of Queer Men Pervades the Shadowhunters Fandom

Alright, I’ve been asked to do a piece about the fetishization of mlm in fandom. This is something that makes me very uncomfortable as I navigate most fandoms, but it’s on a whole other scale in the shadowhunters fandom.

I’m going to try and make this as inclusive of non binary people as I can, but of course, there’s nuance here. I want to emphasise that. This issue isn’t simply mlm vs women. I guess as beautiful enbies, I’ll leave it to you to decide where you fall in this issue.

While it is certainly possible for mlm themselves to engage in fetishizing behaviour, this often comes from internalised homophobia and it is NOT the place of non mlm to call them out on it. I want to make that clear.  Following on from this, if an mlm makes you (a non mlm) uncomfortable with the way he talks about his own sexuality, then… Do I need to finish that sentence? 

So, to make it clear: if cishet women (or men, though that’s less likely) engage in ANY of the behaviour I’m going to describe, then they are a mlm fetishist and should not be considered a good ally or be supported in fanart, fanfic, or discourse about mlm relationships. If a queer woman/enby engages in this behaviour, it can be hard to figure out what the deal is. Lots of queer women/enbies in this fandom engage with Malec as representation for them as well, since they are the only canon MAIN queer couple in the show. And that is TOTALLY valid. But sometimes, queer women/enbies can overstep too. My rule is if an mlm feels uncomfortable about the way you as a queer woman/enby talk about or interact with Malec, then you need to evaluate what you’re doing.

The main issue with the fetishization of mlm in fandom is that actual mlm involved in these fandoms are ignored, their voices aren’t boosted, and their fanworks are paid dust while cishet women are glorified for their ‘ally’ voices and fanworks. To illustrate just how much mlm get spoken over in fandoms, get this: I literally googled ‘fetishization of mlm’ to research stuff for this thread and the first thing that came up was a thinkpiece by a cishet woman. https://www.themarysue.com/fetishizing-slash/ Now, the article is pretty inoffensive as far as articles on mlm fetishization go, but why on EARTH is the most viewed article on fetishization of mlm written by a cishet woman? Don’t you find that interesting? Why is it that even when talking about an issue where we are objectified and cishet women are the objectifiers, cishet women’s voices are the ones overwhelmingly boosted? The truth is that REAL mlm aren’t wanted or desired in fandom, because the only thing mlm are needed for in fandom is to provide a cute otp that non mlm can project their sexual and romantic fantasies onto. Real mlm are more complex than a cute otp, so we are eschewed. 

So other instances/examples of fetishization? One of the classics that makes my blood boil, personally, is the way that non mlm write PWP about mlm couples. I thought about looking for an example, but I couldn’t bring myself to look through AO3 tags. But we’ve all come across those fics where two men in an established relationship flirt for 200 words and start stripping (in the sh fandom, helpfully hastened by Magnus’ magic). In these fics, the ‘top’ (more on that later) will either not prepare the ‘bottom’, or they’ll stick two fingers up there with one coat of lube, magically find the prostate and reduce the ‘bottom’ to a whining mess. Always a whining mess. After a couple of lines of prep (max), the ‘top’ will stick his dick in the ‘bottom’ and wait for a moment, then start fucking the absolute shit out of his ‘bottom’. Now, anyone who’s EVER had anal sex, no matter the gender, will tell you that this is not generally how anal sex goes. So why is this the way cishet women write about m/m sex? The simple reason is because these cishet women are projecting themselves into the position of the ‘bottom’. Vaginal sex, as I hope we know, is practically a lot easier than anal sex. By oversimplifying and straightwashing (for lack of a better term) anal sex, they’re assisting their female readers in their fantasies of being under this queer male top. This particular quote from this article - https://www.lambdaliterary.org/features/oped/08/19/the-fetishizing-of-queer-sexuality-a-response/ - struck me: “The edict for writing has always been: Write what you know. Alas, that is what the M/M writers are doing–they are writing straight male/female relationships but putting them in gay male bodies.” These fanfictions are not meant to celebrate queer men, they are not aimed at queer men, and they aren’t concerned with the reality of queer men. Instead they’re projecting themselves into the more desirable (internalised misogyny, much?) queer men’s bodies. This is similar to the way most mainstream ‘lesbian porn’ is aimed at cishet men. These videos show a version of sex between women that is palatable and ‘sexy’ for the male gaze, and these PWPs written by cishet women work the same way. I wish I didn’t have to point out why that’s harmful, but honestly… The shit I’ve seen in these fandoms I feel like I need to spell it out. Treating mlm as props for you, a non mlm, to get off to, is dehumanising and disrespectful. It is not allyship. It is not flattering. Stop it. Now I know that the sexuality of women, and teenage girls specifically, is judged and policed. I understand that. However, the oppression you face is not an excuse to throw another oppressed group under the bus for your amusement and titillation. That’s it. I said what I said. This article - https://versusthefans.com/2014/07/08/fetishizing-homosexuality/ - goes a little deeper into this issue, but here’s a quote that I thought summed it up: “While I certainly understand being thought of as weird, being scared or worried as [...] she feels about shipping Johnlock, for LGBT people they aren’t just scared because of who they ship, but who they love in real life. At the end of the day, [...] straight women [...] will legally marry a man anywhere in the world she wants and get off while dreaming of gay men together.  Must be nice to have your cake and eat it too. It’s not fiction for LGBT people.”

The second classic part of mlm fetishization in fandom is top and bottom discourse. There are a few issues conflated in this facet of fetishization. Firstly, being a ‘top’ or a ‘bottom’ is not generally a thing. The overwhelming majority of queer men do not strictly adhere to either the ‘top’ or ‘bottom’ position in the bedroom. Some of us joke about being one or the other, but it is not a law that we ALWAYS must bottom or ALWAYS must top. Sometimes you fancy something different. It’s human nature. We’re not one stereotype or the other. Ever. To assume as such is to reduce an entire human being to a sex position, just because they’re queer. Does that sound like good allyship to you?

Next, the very fact that people are so invested in whether a fictional character (or, god forbid, a real person, but again, more on that later) is a ‘top’ or ‘bottom’ is creepy and bizarre. Do you also debate on whether the female lead in your show prefers doggy or the reverse cowgirl? No? Then why do you, a non mlm, spend so much time and energy ‘headcanoning’ the ways m/m couples in fiction have sex? Is it because it’s somehow ‘hotter’ than m/f sex because it’s two men? Why is that? Take a look at your feelings here. Ask yourself why you find the idea of two men having sex so interesting. Is it because you’re only attracted to men, so it’s double the fun? Is it because two men banging is ‘taboo’ or ‘sinful’ or ‘naughty’? Is it because taking it up the ass is not a ‘manly’ thing to do, and is therefore inherently kinky? Unpack these things. Think critically. If it is any of the above things, then address it, because it’s wrong. Once again, queer men are not props for you to manipulate for your enjoyment. One mlm I found on tumblr here - http://bluethisisforyou.tumblr.com/post/162753965120 - had this to say on the issue: “[it] is NOT healthy at all bc, in my case, it makes us feel as if we only exist for entertainment and that our relationships are seen as wrong and/or dirty”. Do you intend to make mlm feel that way? If yes, then… Bruh, what the fuck are you do pretending to give a shit about mlm in the first place? If no… Maybe adjust your behaviours accordingly.

Because apparently it’s necessary, I’m going to lay out some facts for you, here. Taller man =/= top. Stronger man =/= top. Leader =/= top. Masculine man =/= top. Shorter man =/= bottom. Weaker man =/= bottom. Follower =/= bottom. Effeminate man =/= bottom. Everyone needs to stop using physical and personality traits to ‘argue their case’ as to whether a queer man is a top or a bottom. These things do NOT impact what kind of sex you like. To imply as such is homophobic and, frankly, misogynistic as well. By painting a more effeminate, smaller, weaker man as the bottom in these scenarios, you are implying that bottoming, and therefore submitting/yielding to ‘masculine’ penetration, is feminine and a sign of weakness. Having said that, you are not more progressive if you make the effeminate man the top for brownie points or because it’s ‘hot’ that the smaller one can weaken the larger one. It’s still creepy and rooted in harmful stereotypes. In the context of the shadowhunters fandom (that this essay is mostly aimed at), both Magnus and Alec are tall, strapping, formidable men who are powerful and badass, and yet in almost every fanwork by a cishet woman, one of them will always be shrunk or feminised. And on the rare occasions where they aren’t, the emphasis will be on the fact that the power struggle between them is hot. And people wonder why I have the vast majority of fanartists blocked.

The last thing I want to talk about as a symptom of mlm fetishization is RPF, or ‘real person shipping’. There are ALWAYS, ALWAYS people in a tv show or movie fandom where they’ll ship the actors who play queer (or perceived queer) characters. It happened with Darren Criss and Chris Colfer after they played Klaine in Glee, it happened with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman after they played Johnlock in Sherlock, it happened with Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins after they played Destiel in Supernatural. In every single instance except Chris Colfer, these actors have had female partners. I’m not going to say all of them are straight, because I don’t know their lives, and I don’t care about most of them enough to research, but all of them (except Colfer) is attracted to women. Most of them have expressed discomfort at the fact that they are ‘shipped’ with their co-star and friend. And yet so many people continue to write fanfiction about them and even harass their ACTUAL partners about a ship that only came about because of their acting jobs. The most confusing thing about this is that there are quite a few m/m couples in the spotlight these days that don’t get nearly as much attention from the RPF shippers. Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka, Tom Daley and Dustin Lance Black, Colton Haynes and Jeff Leatham all are openly in love, posting adorable snapshots of their lives together, and yet… Somehow, for these RPF shippers, that’s not good enough. It’s only good enough if these real man have been seen in fictional embraces together, if they’ve kissed in giffable high quality, it they’re (in their fucked up fantasies) cheating on a poor unsuspecting female partner in order to be together. M/m couples are only valuable to these people if their most intimate moments are visible, and palatable. It doesn’t matter if real love exists between them, all that matters is that they’re hot together, that their relationship is oh so wrong it’s right.

We as queer men deserve to be celebrated, and we deserve to be celebrated for the diversity and vibrance that we bring to the world. We deserve better than to be reduced to a sexual fantasy, to a cute little otp to squeal over, to something that is inherently taboo or naughty. We deserve to be respected. We deserve to be loved. We deserve a platform in a fandom that exists because of characters that reflect us. We deserve to be heard.

i’ve been spending most of my time on instagram for a solid 2 years now and recently i’ve been feeling more alienated on there and i just pinpointed why.

i’m a part of the spam community (what’s left of it) and that level of putting everything about you on blast makes it so much harder to make friends/find ppl you like.

on tumblr 95% percent of posts are just reblogging other ppl’s content (for me at least) and i feel like most people’s blogs convey a frankenstein version of who they really are. like it’s cherrypicking other people’s lives and opinions and occasionally adding on your own thoughts and it creates a kind of giant quilt spreading across different people’s blogs. and you see content mildly irritating but not worth unfollowing or blocking someone over so you blacklist it. or you scroll past, or whatever. and if i have a mutual that likes something i don’t rly agree with, i reblog posts going against it to my sideblog. and the whole concept of sideblogs is amazing, because if needed you can compartmentalize aspects of yourself. like, for example, i have a sideblog for art/writing ref, and another for comics, and one for witch stuff, and one for politics. and i have the ability to customize the colors, to set the mood of my blog and who i am. and above all else, the bits and pieces of individual posts form the frankenstein version of myself. and that self is easier to interact with. the sewn together bits of skin can just as easily be resewn and the body reshaped, and boom, i’m a new person.

and spam accounts on instagram are so so different!! most of the accs are on private, so all you get is a bio, a profile picture, maybe a link to an about page if you’re lucky. you don’t get to check to see if any of your frankenstein bits click together with theirs. you can’t immediately see if you’ll get along because they don’t have a feed you can scroll through. and even more important than that, ig doesn’t have a quilt. there is no reblogging. instead of 95% other people’s posts, it’s 100% you. and you can screenshot stuff and repost it, but by doing that you’re saying This Is Who I Am. this is Me.

simplified example of the shit i’m trying to convey:

when this blog has content on it talking about comics, it’s usually someone else talking about comics, art someone else drew. and all of my commentary on it is in the notes. in a muted grey color.

when i post about comics on ig, it’s usually me spamming because i’m reading a new comic and there’s a ton of thoughts i’m having and putting into text. and that text is front and center

and the fundamental difference between these two is that one is me passively sharing content of something i like, and the other is of me actually taking a picture of the comic i own and am reading, and my thoughts are put first. and people respond to what i say, and we have a whole conversation in the comments.

and the picture on ig is Mandatory. it naturally coaxes you into taking pictures, its the only way to use the app. so while tumblr is a collection of things you like or are interested in or inspired by or w/e, instagram is your life. its sharing so much w people. its showing who you ARE. how you react to things on a daily basis. pictures of your pets, your bedroom floor, the stain on the kitchen countertop. the pillow you sleep on every night. and when you get to know someone on that level, it’s hard to unfollow someone bc they love hamilton. or they have weird ships or w/e. and that’s especially hard when someone’s account is private and the best way of telling who someone is is by their “Followed By:” so you don't know what you're getting into in the first place.

but anyways yeah tl:dr a girl on ig really likes hamilton but i have anxiety and the format for interacting w ppl is so much more personal on ig, esp when you’re a spam
