I really love how you draw Dottore! he's my favorite character in genshin- do you have any hcs/ideas for how he interacts with the other harbingers? I find other people's readings of him really interesting!

(I'm gonna toss them under a cut because I have a tendency to ramble on and use a whole lotta Words-)

Alright, so Signora and Dottore:

Extraordinarily chaotic and evil sibling dynamic

They gossip, like, A Lot, it's mainly Signora talking while Dottore fidgets and works with whatever he's working on, but he gets invested in it pretty easily

Now they also can and will rat each other out when they want, absolute snitches the both of them, they find immense joy in it, however. They also know a decent number of each other's secrets and they aren't going to tell those unless given a proper bribe (which neither have received just yet)

Signora and Dottore also both do Not like Childe

They have bonded over this

Childe is gaslight girlboss gatekept from everything when Signora and Dottore are involved

Also, Signora usually isn't phased by whatever Dottore keeps in his labs, because, yk, she might be 500+ years old, which Dottore appreciates because usually people are constantly on edge in his labs

It's a pain for him to actually keep staff (alive and employed), but having another Harbinger there (even one with a reputation like Signora's) grants the people working for him an, admittedly false, sense of security. Nothing could go bad when two Harbingers are here, right?

So Actually many many things can go wrong with these two in a room with Dottore's experiments

Like don't trust them around fire? Ever? Signora knows her way around it a little bit too well to be safe, and Dottore just likes watching how things burn under different conditions soo a recipe for Arson, that's what that is

Signora also thinks Dottore is hilarious when he's angry, and Dottore just likes being antagonistic, which leads to a whole lotta bickering. It's usually lighthearted but it can get serious and it can get serious fast

But overall Dottore just sorta sees her as an older sibling-ish person? He knows if he lets something slip she's not going to go straight to the other Harbingers to gossip. Which he likes because he can just go off and rant about how stupid something is and she'll just use it as blackmail material, which he thinks is better than like. Having everyone know how much he hates a certain piece of old machinery or something-

However, he doesn't trust her too much, because?? Who in the Harbingers actually trusts each other???

Also he and Signora have Transmasc/Transfem solidarity I will not be elaborating

Dottore and Childe on the other hand:

Pure hatred from Childe's side, he straight-up despises Dottore.

After all, this is a guy whose family is one of the most important things to him, his siblings are children, children who do not know the weight of the world just yet.

And Dottore is the guy who is... well. He's known to treat kids like nothing but a base to experiment on

Now Dottore on the other hand literally just wants to dissect Childe, he's gone absolutely crazy trying to get permission to at least run tests.

I mean, What else was he going to do when the kid Pulcinella found on the side of the road started turning into an entire 10ft abyss creature??? That's part of his whole line of work!! This is literally something he studies!!!

Needless to say, he was not allowed to study Childe's Foul Legacy in any regard and it ticked him off

So yeah, just overall they Hate each other, they argue a lot, like, if the Tsarita wasn't there at meetings they would turn into fistfights

However, they both drink whatever the Genshin equivalent of Monster is

This is not a bonding point, they fight over flavors

Sounds like a dumb thing to fight over but Dottore can't stand Childe's and Childe can't stand Dottore's

This has lead to other Harbingers swapping their flavors around because they think it's entertaining to watch them fight

It actually got to the point where the Tsaritsa herself had to order them to stop switching the flavors around because Dottore and Childe are already prepped to murder each other at any moment, they don't need to make it worse

So Dottore just reserves himself to snapping at Childe with the annoyance of someone who is being blocked from something that could very easily be a big break that's being dangled over his head

For real though, Childe has so much potential for Dottore's experiments but Dottore isn't allowed to do so much as study what effect that the transformation has on Childe afterward, and he hates it

But he can't lose his funding from the Tsaritsa so he stays quiet and angrily compiles whatever information he can

Anyway, Dottore and Scaramouche:

Overall neutral actually?

Like they don't see each other much, with Dottore usually knee and elbow deep in some messed up science stuff, and Scara's work taking him out and about a lot of the time

They bicker and stuff, but overall?? They kinda just avoid talking to each other?

Sometimes, rarely, they do get put on a mission with each other, but when they happens they usually get along pretty well!

They actually have a good time snooping around places, what with Dottore's practically uncontrollable curiosity being easily triggered if there's... oh idk, dragon bones, or old machines, or abyss-related ruins, or anything in the typical Vindagyeran Architecture Style, and Scaramouche just likes to snoop and sneak around for fun, for funsies

There's been a few times when the both of them have bonded over chaotically messing something up (didn't impact them, but sure did impact whoever was living in those houses) and laughed over it, grabbed some drinks, and just hung out

They're sorta like buddies who don't see each other much so they're overall estranged but still have a good time, yk?

Scaramouche has hung out in Dottore's labs before, doesn't particularly enjoy them, what with all the machinery and people crying and whatever, thinks it's boring, but if he has to hang out there he'll find his way to Dottore's office and read his files

This gets on Dottore's nerves, but he knows a little better than to cross the minor god that is Scaramouche

And he would very much like to study Scaramouche, considering, yk, divinity abandoned by the divine?

What an odd predicament!!

What effects would that have!!

How does he still have any power!!!

The questions Dottore could have are endless!!

But Scaramouche is away enough to be sure that Dottore's interest is solidly in other things (mainly Abyssal, and Dragons, because there's always some Fatui around the dragon skeletons (Durin and Orobashi) and I have a feeling it's Dottore's doing)

And that's it so far I think? They'll probably change as more Harbingers/info on the ones we have already come out and such but that's what I have rn!! Just Dottore being a funny feral little angry science man with at least three sensible braincells, and yk what I love him for it :)

Hairless Cat! S/O: Mao Mao

Request: your ask box seems to be closed on your tumblr, or at least I can't find it, so I'll drop my request here bfyudksbvfjdsvx- What if s/o was was a hairless cat? i think it'd be kinda interesting to see how he'd handle the whole 'hairless cats are ugly and mean' stereotype and stuff like how they get cold easier or can't be in the sun for too long without getting sunburnt. (sorry i rlly like hairless cats aaa) thanks-

[A/N: I'm back!! Sorry for the giant hiatus everyone!! Hopefully I should be posting regularly again! This was very fun to write, (I love hairless cats!!!) and I can't wait to fill the next request! I love you all so much. Thank you for all of the love and support <3 Anyways, under a read-more since it’s long!]

He’s had a lot of experience with all sorts of animals, so you’re not the strangest person he’s seen: not by a long shot. Not to mention, he grew up in a cat-dominated city. Some of his more distant family members are Peterbalds, as well! He has a very deep respect for hairless cats, and he has plenty of experience with them.

That’s not to say he views y’all accurately, though. At least, not at first.

He actually bows to you the first time you two meet. Hairless cats are typically royalty where he’s from!

He’s very confused when he looks up and doesn’t see you wearing gold jewelry, or bearing the traditional tattoos. It’s an... awkward few moments of eye contact. You don’t understand why he’s bowing, and he doesn’t understand why you look so... normal? Civilian-like? Why are you dressed so casually?

He follows you around for a little while out of habit. He thinks he has to protect you. You must be royalty in disguise, right? There’s no way a hairless cat is just another citizen! You have to be some sort of royal family member in disguise. Maybe you’re on a secret mission? Yeah, that has to be it! He follows you from the shadows, ready to protect you from danger at a moment's notice.

You eventually convince him that you’re just a normal cat and god, he’s embarrassed.

He thinks you’re really cool, honestly. There aren’t many furless mammals around, so it’s really cool to see natural skin. He views it as a symbol of strength and individuality.

Adorabat loves to paint on you since it’s easier to get the paint off! The little paint swirls stand out so well on your skin, and you can't help but giggle at the starry-eyed look she gets. It's like painting on a breathing canvass to her!

She got so excited when you mentioned tattoos and their significance in your culture: she likes to pretend she’s giving you pretty tattoos now!

Mao Mao loves the bond you two share. It makes him fall so much deeper in love with you. She's practically his kid, after all.

Mao Mao will absolutely defend you from bigoted folks. You look a little different from everyone else: so what? What’s their issue with that? Are they really so close minded that they can’t even fathom a different genetic structure? He gets really heated about it. He hates it when people judge you right off the bat, condemning you without getting to know you. He will throw down with someone over it, if you let him.

He honestly doesn’t understand where the “ugly and mean,” stigma comes from. You’re so kind...how could anyone perceive you differently? Why make such broad, negative generalizations about people they don’t even know? And you’re so pretty!

He loves how naturally social you are! You’re always someone he can come to when he isn’t feeling his greatest, and he treasures that so much.

He buys you a little parasol to help you weather the sun. It makes even more people stare, but honestly, it’s better than getting a sunburn! It ends up becoming a key piece of your aesthetic. Some people think you're a witch at this point. You don't bother correcting them.

The most embarrassing moment of your guys relationship was when you got up from the couch, only to reveal a small oil stain. Despite the embarrassment, you both had a big laugh about it. You remember the way he doubled over, laughing until he wheezed. He tried to stop himself from laughing by putting his paws over his snout, but once you assured him that it was, in fact hilarious, he took his paws away and laughed for ages. You laughed along with him despite the raging blush of embarrassment. It’s a very fond memory that really solidified your relationship’s trust. You ended up changing your diet that day anyways. Oily skin isn't fun, anyways.

He always picks at your food while you eat. He claims he’s just trying it, but it happens every night! He actually just likes the high quality ingredients he uses in your food.

He ends up switching his diet over to yours as well to make things easier. It makes him feel fancy, anyways.

He tries his hardest to get you to blush. He thinks it's adorable!! He loves how easy he can gauge his advancements as well. You can't fake a blush! And you can't hide yours!

He gets really nervous in the winter. I mean, he gets cold in winter, and he grows a whole new coat for it! He can’t imagine how chilly you get. He totally goes overboard when buying clothes for you. Most of your closet consists of parkas, scarves, and thermals.

Wakes up early to start the fireplace in the morning once winter hits.

He loves to give you forehead kisses. He thinks it’s cute when you flex your “brows” at him in response. He can’t help but snort at the patterns it makes, and he ends up poking you whenever you respond that way. It’s a sweet little inside joke.

He honestly thinks clothes fit you super well? Skin-tight stuff is mesmerizing. The way it clings so effortlessly to your frame, without a single hair marring the cling of the fabric...it’s incredible to him. He's enchanted.

He loves to hold you. The feel of fur on skin is weird, but it’s become a comforting feeling to him. He loves to trace little patterns on you when you cuddle.

Which is very unfortunate if you’re ticklish. His fur always seems to drag across your skin in a way that makes you giggle!! And he knows what he’s doing!! He’s so stubborn about it as well. He won’t stop until you call a time-out.

He smiles every time you yawn. He thinks you’re cute.

He wants to draw on you, but he has no artistic talent. He’s too shy to learn!! He hates not being perfect at first attempt, and well...art is a honed skill. He loves the idea of painting night skies on your back, and making sharpie tattoos for you, but it’ll probably never happen.

You can convince him to write on you, though! He does great calligraphy.

Sometimes he’ll write little poems on your wrist, or your sides. He likes to do this when you’re sleeping, for two reasons. A.) So he doesn’t get embarrassed or flustered about it, and B.) So you have a nice surprise when you wake up!

They’re short, but sweet.

He’s actually a really good poet! Most of the things he writes on you are of his own creation.

Beauty isn't seen by eyes.

It's felt by hearts,

Recognized by souls,

In the presence of love

Overall, he thinks you’re gorgeous. He won’t hesitate to defend you from bigoted people, and he’s always here to help you with any accommodations you may need. You’re beautiful. He loves you so much, and he feels so lucky to have you by his side. He’ll do anything for you!

aaa thank you sm for the ask!! bothela and ursula are my emotional support lesbian moms so i'm glad to have an excuse to rave about them more lol <3 for lexi, i decided to just go for the little team i've got for her in my current wip, which is her, lucien, inigo, and vilja !! it's the one i've been posting some promos for, so i'll be posting more about them later this month.

who shows affection through touch?

bothela & ursula: definitely ursula !! growing up, she and her sister were extremely close and very touchy and physically affectionate. even though the sisters grew apart over the years, i think ursula still has that streak where she loves being as close as possible to the people she loves. her favorite thing hugging bothela from behind while she's working at the alchemy lab and giving her a kiss on the cheek. bothela would call her out for being a distraction, but she secretly loves it too lol. they've got that old married couple banter. "stop doing that, this is a sensitive mixture!" / "what? i just wanted to remind you to dilute the ash hopper jelly more. it's not watery enough." / "it's perfectly fine." / "you know, this is why my health potions are better than yours." / "why you-! you're fired." meanwhile muiri is trying to figure out how this relationship lasted 30+ years dkdflkhsd

lexi's polycule: oohh my god it's alexi by FAR. i mean, vilja is also very affectionate too, but alexi will be all over whoever is in her vicinity. she's her mother's daughter in that regard and it almost confuses people who aren't used to affection cause she's so casual with it. she will find a way to cuddle in any position--by lifting their arm and putting it around her, or sitting in their lap, or hugging them from behind. will not go an hour without giving someone a kiss on the cheek. it makes vilja so happy and she returns it enthusiastically. inigo sometimes teases her for it, but he lets her get comfortable and loves it all the same. lucien gets very flustered by it, because he's not exactly used to having a woman all over him like this, and definitely not one so scantily dressed (forsworn armor and whatnot). he gets used to it eventually, but no matter how long it's been since they've gotten together, he still ends up blushing a little.

how do they comfort each other?

bothela & ursula: a lot of the time their way of comforting can be seen as a little harsh i think? it's part of how they were raised as reachwomen; they don't sugarcoat anything and tend to focus on practical solutions to problems. they aren't insensitive by any means of course, and they won't dismiss the other's feelings, but they also won't let them wallow in it and make themselves feel worse. so when bothela is having a rough time because of her nephew being in the mine, ursula would tell her there's nothing left to do but take care of each other and their other loved ones as best they can. when ursula is anxious about her niece alexi going off to do gods-know-what, bothela assures her that no matter what, alexi's choices are her own and ursula gave her the self-assuredness to make them for herself. they often opt to distract the other from their worries by drawing their attention to their work or to something pleasant and relaxing. walks along the karth river are their go-to.

lexi's polycule: alexandria is more gentle with her words than her aunties, seeing as she spent much of her childhood acting as a peacekeeper between her family. she's really sensitive to people's moods and feelings, and she's very emotionally supportive, but she feels bad that she doesn't always have the wisdom to give advice on what to do. lucien is a great listener as well, and he's really great to talk to when one of them is feeling confused and torn over something because he's really good at asking the right questions and helping to make sense of what they're feeling. he also tends to offer rational solutions and offer help however he can. vilja is super understanding and always has a shoulder to cry on, but i think she's also someone who's able to lift someone's spirits when they're down. she's great if you need a distraction or change of pace. there's a little scene in my fic where she helps alexi down from a panic attack by singing her favorite song and giving her a hand to grasp to ground herself. lastly, inigo's been through hell and back, and so he's very sympathetic and gives really great advice on how to cope with a lot of difficult things, especially grief and guilt. he's just a warm person and a comforting presence. and like vilja, he can help lift someone's spirits just by his sense of humor! he can get someone laughing even if they're having the worst day of their life.

what’s an ideal evening for them?

bothela & ursula: i actually think they're both very sociable, community-oriented people! their favorite memories are in group settings, surrounded by family and loved ones. usually potlucks and big family gatherings. sad as it is, those memories are long gone. much of what's left of the reachfolk perished in the markarth incident or were thrown in the mines (including bothela's family). it left ursula and her sister constantly at odds, and it tore up the community they had grown to love. they do still have a few people left that they love spending time with; namely robin, marceline, and muiri (and alexi before she left of course). they never had kids of their own, but they took on a very parental role with muiri, and they treat her like family. and of course, ursula loves her nieces and nephew with all her heart. they'd usually invite the kids out to a picnic overlooking the karth river. ursula would make her famous juniper berry pie, and bothela makes a great salmon stew which is a classic reach dish.

lexi's polycule: kinda different things for all of them! with lucien, alexandria and he are both absolute nerds, and they often spend hours on end discussing their research (their interests mostly overlap in history, but lucien learned a lot about alchemy from her and she learned a lot about philosophy from him). basically, study dates!! with vilja, i think she enjoys a calm evening. she loves walking along the coastlines and looking for pearls, and alexi loses her mind when finding new ingredients, so it's a pleasant way to spend time for both of them. with inigo, i think he's got the most adventurous spirit of the bunch, and he always brings it out in lexi! she's most fond of nordic ruins (inigo's worst nightmare lol), but they find their common ground in smashing giant spiders !! lexi insists they're cute in their own way, which pretty much always leads to playful bickering between the pair, but they have fun regardless (and lexi gets tons of ingredients, which is like christmas for her)

ten ways to say “i love you” (adansey)

They’ve been doing this thing—hanging out, talking about cars and dead kings, being friends—for almost a month but Adam still doesn’t feel all that comfortable with Gansey. He doesn’t think he ever will. Don’t get him wrong. He likes Gansey, he likes spending time with Gansey, he likes being with Gansey. Hell, he willingly subjects himself to Gansey’s overly abrasive other half on a regular basis for Gansey.

It’s just… He can’t let go. He’s spent years hyper aware of his every movement, every word, every action, wondering if it will betray his Henrietta roots to people like them. A part of him is always waiting for a look of derision, a condescending quirk of an eyebrow. Something that tells how he doesn’t belong in Aglionby. With them. And that he should stop trying because he never will.

Sometimes though. Sometimes Gansey can catch him off guard. Gansey who can and will talk for hours upon hours about Arthurian legends, the soft cadence of his voice lulling him into calmness. Gansey who looks at him with soft expressions and awe in his eyes. Gansey who makes him feel at peace and comfortable enough to stop being self conscious.

Most of the time, the two of them hanging out means him going with Gansey back to Monmouth. This afternoon is different though. School has let out, his father is out of town and he has no work shift to rush to. It’s the perfect time to show Gansey the relatively secret part of the river that cuts through the Henrietta woods.

It’s something known only to locals like him and he knows Gansey lives for such local secrets like this. Which is why it’s not surprising when Gansey practically rips his arm off its socket, yanking at him at his rush to get there, when he asks if he wants to go there. The usually flappable and aloof Gansey is acting like a hyperactive toddler and the ridiculousness of it makes Adam burst into helpless giggles. The sound of it must have startled Gansey because he stops yanking and just looks at him.

Gansey doesn’t say anything, just looks at him with that soft expression on his face again.

“What?” he asks, a little bit confused. He’s not sure if he’s imagining it, but Gansey might be blushing.

Gansey gives him a small smile. “Nothing. I like your laugh.”

He loves his car. He really does. The Pig is one of his favorite things in the world. But what he doesn’t love is stalling on the side of some weird road in the middle of nowhere when he’s already late to meet up with his friends. Usually he’d just call AAA (or whatever the small town version of it is called).

Adam has been teaching him how to fix cars though. On rare moments when they don’t have school, Adam doesn’t have work and he doesn’t have a new Glendower lead to pore through. He thinks he’s done fine though, it’s going well. Or so he thinks. Which is why he takes the toolbox out from his trunk, pops open the hood and decides that he can fix it for himself. Adam would be so proud.

To his credit, he gets to spend at least five minutes poking and prodding at his engine before it sparks and he’s forced to admit defeat.

He kicks at the dirt and sighs before closing his eyes and taking a deep breath. He takes his phone out and dials Ronan’s number.

“Hey, Gansey. Pig stall out again?”

“You reading minds now, Ro?”

“Telepathy isn’t one of my many abilities, you’re just that predictable.”

“Thank you for that. Can you come pick me up?”

Silence. There’s a sound of scuffling in the background and when Ronan talks again he sounds a little worried. “Listen…”

“Oh no.”

“Gansey, you know I would do anything for you but, me and Noah are kind of the middle of something.” As if on cue, a metallic screeching is heard followed by Noah swearing softly.

“It’s Noah and I. Also, what are you doing?”

“A very volatile experiment.”

“Please don’t burn down Monmouth while I’m out.”

“We’ll try!”

He hangs up. Sends a text.

He’s leaning against the car, face tipped up to the sky and watching the slow passage of clouds when he hears the sound of gravel under bicycle wheels.

He waits a beat before he starts speaking, “In my defense, I really thought I had it all under control before the engine started sparking.”

Adam scoffs at that and Gansey turns to look at him. He’s wearing faded jeans and an equally faded shirt but all it does is emphasize how sharp and clear Adam always seems to him. Like he’s the realest thing in Gansey’s world.

He gets off his bike and stands next to where Gansey is leaning so he can nudge his shoulder against his. “You’re still getting better though. You didn’t set it on actual fire so that’s an improvement.”

Gansey feels his lips twitch into a smile, and nudges Adam’s shoulder back. Adam laughs and walks over to the hood of the car, inspecting the damage.

Barely a minute later he looks back and Gansey and says, “Come here. Let’s fix this.”

Adam rubs at his eyes and tries to blink himself to alertness. He looks at the page he and Gansey are supposed to be studying but the numbers and coefficients have started to blur together. Gansey himself has his head on the desk and is probably sleeping already.

Right, time to call it quits then. They didn’t do that bad, really. They’ve had the concept of orthogonality and orthonormality locked down early enough in their study session. It’s the more advanced parts they had a problem with and that won’t really show up on the exam.

He reaches across the table to give Gansey’s shoulders a little shove.

“Wake up.”

No response.

“Gansey, wake up. Go sleep in your real bed.”

Still nothing. He walks around to Gansey’s side and pokes him in the ribs. Gansey’s head snaps up, wakefulness crashing into him.

“Did I fall asleep?” he asks.

Adam just laughs at that. “Yeah. But I think we’ve studied enough. I’m heading home. Go sleep in your bed.”

“Oh,” says Gansey. He takes a peek at his watch, surprise crossing across his face. “Oh, it’s late. Wait, Adam, I’ll drive you home.”

Adam thinks of The Pig and its accompanying roar waking up his father. Thinks of snide comments and where-have-you-beens he’d have to deal with, at the very least. “It’s okay. You don’t have to.”

“It’s past eleven, Adam. You can’t think I’m just going to let you walk in the dark.”

“I have my bike.”

“Jesus, Adam. How is this a big deal? Load up the bike, too. I just don’t want you going off alone when it’s this late.”

“Gansey,” he says catching one of his gesticulating hands. Adam looks at Gansey in the eye, willing him to understand his unverbalized reason. “I don’t need you to drive me home.”

Gansey gets it of course. He lets out a defeated sigh. “Sure. But please, do me a favor. Call me when you get home.”

“Sure,” he answers. He draws Gansey in for a goodbye hug. “I’ve lived here my whole life, Gansey. I’m gonna be okay, stop worrying.”

He feels Gansey’s breath tickle the back of his neck as he replies, “You’re asking the impossible of me. I always worry.”

Gansey hears a muffled thump and a curse from Ronan.

Before he can even turn to look at the commotion, he hears Ronan again. “Whoa, Parrish. Move the fuck out the doorway. What are you looking—Oh.” Even without looking he knows Ronan’s got a self-satisfied smile on by that one word. He hears Ronan laugh and walk over to him. Ronan throws an arm across his shoulders and spins him around so they’re facing an extremely red-faced Adam Parrish.

“Adam!” he exclaims. “I didn’t know you were here. Have you been waiting long? What’s wrong? You look flustered.” He looks sideways at Ronan. “Did you do something to him?”

Ronan just grins sharp. “I’m not the one who did something to him.” He ignores Adam’s hissed out warning to stop talking and continues, “I think it’s his first time seeing you in skinny jeans.”

Oh. He’s not quite sure which way to take that. He’d like to think it’s Adam thinking he looks nice but it could also mean he looks weird. He knows Adam’s mostly used to seeing him in uniform or khakis. That’s his trademark style, maybe the skinny jeans make him look uncouth or trying to be cool. It’s Ronan’s fault, really. He only wears them when he’s going out with him. Ronan always said he looked attractive in them though and he trusts Ronan’s opinions. Mostly.

While he’s having this monologue in his mind, Adam’s been trying and failing to get a word out. He fumbles on his reply before managing to tell him, “It’s nothing, I’m fine. I was just surprised. It… uh… It looks good on you. Not that your other clothes don’t look good on you. The jeans are just… nice.”

“Oh,” he hears himself say. He’s pretty sure he’s blushing now, too. He feels his lips curl into a smile. “Thanks.”

He usually tells Gansey beforehand when he’s going to Monmouth. It’s a habit, born out of the early days when he thought that type of formality was required by Gansey and his kind. This afternoon though, he forgoes that notion and just goes straight inside Gansey and Ronan’s (and Noah’s, he tends to forget that) home.

His first thought is that no one’s there but he spots a slight movement at the corner of his eye as Noah materializes.

“Hey, Noah,” he says in greeting and pivots to face him. He gives Noah’s hair a slight ruffle and Noah gives him a small smile in turn.

“You looking for Gansey?” Noah asks.

“Yeah. Is he in?”

Noah nods and points upstairs. “He’s playing with his Henrietta dollhouse.”

“Thanks.”

The sight that greets him upstairs makes his breath catch in his throat. Afternoon light filters through Monmouth’s huge windows and makes everything look golden.

Gansey is turned away from him, fully focused on his mini-Henrietta. His eyebrows are drawn together; elegant fingers working skillfully as he paints a box to add to his mini-city. His glasses slip a little bit and he pushes them up with two fingers, nose wrinkling up adorably. He pauses in his work to look out the window. Gansey stays quiet for a moment and lets out a deep longing sigh. The light makes casts a soft glow on him. He looks beautiful.

“Hey,” he breathes out.

Gansey turns to him and the world feels like it’s in slow motion. Adam is drawn to the way Gansey’s lips curl into a smile, imagines how it would be like to feel the way those lips move against his own.

“Adam,” Gansey says happily. “I was just thinking about you.”

He deliberates for a while but in the end, he gives in and knocks at Adam’s church apartment door. Adam stands on the other side, bleary eyed with rumpled hair. He looks so soft, Gansey wishes it would be acceptable to just burrow his face in Adam’s neck, nuzzle him and stay there forever.

“It’s late.” Adam tells him.

“I know,” he answers and adjusts his glasses. I couldn’t sleep, he wants to say. I couldn’t sleep because I keep thinking of you. I miss you. I hate when we fight. He doesn’t say any of that and instead blurts out. “Calculus.”

Adam blinks at him.

“Calculus,” he repeats. “I can’t get the answer to number four, I was hoping you can teach it to me?”

“Sure.” Adam steps back to let him in, watching him with concern. Adam takes off his coat and drapes it over a chair. “Take a seat.”

Adam sits across him and drags his school stuff out. “So, I think your mistake was not using integration by parts…”

That’s pretty much all he heard, preferring to just watch Adam in his element. Knowledgeable, focused, sure in every word that comes out of his mouth. He lets himself get lulled by the cadence of Adam’s voice, feeling the unease that has lived in their chest since the day of their fight finally settle.

“Gansey,” he hears someone say and give him a gentle shake. “Gansey,” the voice repeats and this time he feels a hand smooth the hair off his forehead.

“What?” he repeats blearily, trying to blink himself awake. He’s met with the sight of Adam’s face, about three inches in front of him. “Oh,” he takes a look at his watch. “Oh, it’s late.”

“I’m sorry. I kept you up late. I’m just gonna go home now,” he stutters out as he tries to gather his stuff but he’s stopped by Adam’s hands.

“Hey, no. Stop. It’s fine.,” Adam tells him. “It’s fine and you’re right, it’s late. Stay over.”

“Are you sure?” he asks with some trepidation.

“Gansey, you’re already wearing pajamas. Just stay. Okay?”

He smiles at Adam. “Okay.”

Adam opens his eyes with a loud gasp. He shivers a little, more because of the remnants of his nightmare than the cold weather itself. He’s breathing heavily as he lies there, staring at the ceiling trying to calm himself. Hydrogen Helium Lithium Berylium Boron Carbon, he thinks, reciting the periodic table as an effort to distract himself from the dream.

It’s never gonna come true. He’s never going to betray Gansey. Never going to do something that will break what he and Gansey have.

He feels a hand on his arm and freezes.

“Adam?” whispers Gansey. Oh, right. He told him to sleep here tonight. The hand on his arm tugs at him. “You alright?”

He goes with it, turning so he can look at Gansey. His glasses are off and his eyes are already half closed again. Gansey at rest almost looks common. Almost. The undefinable commanding aura that surrounds him is always present. He aches to reach across and touch him. Run his fingers through his hair again. Gansey has the blankets pulled up to his chest, knees curled up. He doesn’t like the cold either.

“I’m fine.”

Gansey hums and extends a hand and feels for his wrist, thumb resting at his pulse. “You sure?”

“I’m sure,” he whispers back to him. “Just a little cold.”

“Yeah?” Gansey tugs him closer and shuffles towards him. He raises an arm and covers Adam with the same blanket that he’s using. “Better?”

Gansey’s arm is resting at his waist and at this close, he can feel the warmth of Gansey’s breath on his skin. He reaches out and gently slides his arm under Gansey’s head. He smiles. “Better.”

Gansey snuggles closer and drops a kiss on his forehead before settling down again. “Good. Go back to sleep.”

“Gansey, I can’t.”

He tries not to, but he’s pretty sure Adam can still see how his heart breaks when he said those three words. Adam looks wrecked, too. Like Gansey confessing his love and saying “I think we could be amazing together.” is the last thing he wanted to hear. He blinks back to clear the unexpected bleariness from his eyes. It’s not your fault, he wants to say to Adam. I’ll be fine. It’s not your fault that you don’t love me the same way.

He wonders if it would be worse if Adam just doesn’t love him at all. Because Adam does love him, he knows that. He just isn’t in love with him.

“Oh…” he finally stutters out and wonders how a single syllable could sound so broken. “It’s fine,” he says in a voice that doesn’t sound like his, doesn’t feel like his, like some other person has taken control of his mouth, the words not his own. “I understand.”

If possible, those words just make look Adam more disturbed. “No,” he says, taking Gansey’s hand in his and pressing it on his own cheek. He turns his head to kiss Gansey’s palm and he can feel the shape of Adam’s lips burn in the center of his hand. Adam places his hand on the side of Gansey’s neck. “Please look at me,” he whispers.

Gansey doesn’t want to. Doesn’t want to see how much he fucked things up. How he assumed things and destroyed his relationship with Adam.

“Gansey,” he hears him plead. And that’s enough to make him look. He could never deny Adam anything. “I love you.” Adam tells him.

And he knows, of course he does. They are friends. “I know.”

“No you don’t,” he insists. “I’m in love with you, Gansey.”

His heart skips a beat and he’s so so confused. “Then why—“

“I just can’t be with you right now.”

“What do you mean?” he asks.

Adam sighs. “Gansey, you know why. I love you and you love me but we’re not in the right time nor place to love each other.” He scoots closer until he can lean down and put his head on Gansey’s shoulder. “Right now, this search is your life and that search needs you here in Henrietta. Your death and Glendower owns your mind and keeps you here. And, me... You know I’m going to leave Henrietta. It may not be forever and I may come back. But you know I want to live a part of my life away from here.”

Gansey’s hands have moved to stroke over Adam’s hair rhythmically. He knows what Adam means. They still have separate lives to live and no matter the depth of their feelings for each other, they can’t change that. He knows that. Had known it when Adam made the deal with Cabeswater. Known it during the party at his family’s house. It’s a while before he speaks again. “So, what happens to us?”

“I’m not sure. All I know is that next year I won’t be here.” Adam pulls back to look him in the eye. “And if we try this… us? right now? I don’t want us to end just because we both weren’t ready.”

“So we’re just never going to try?”

Adam lets out a sigh of frustration. “We will. We will, Gansey. Can’t you feel it? My feelings for you are never going to fade. We’ll have a chance, I swear.”

Gansey meets his gaze head on. “Okay. I understand what you’re saying. I do, it doesn’t mean it won’t hurt. That it’s not hurting right now.”

“It’s hurting for me, too,” Adam whispers.

“I know,” he answers. “It’s why I want to promise you something.”

“What?”

Gansey traces his thumb under Adam’s eye. “I’ll still be here when you’re ready.”

When he wakes up, the first thing he notices is the bright harsh fluorescent light. He closes his eyes and tries to raise his hand to block out the light as a reflex. That’s when he notices the pinch of a needle on his hand. His hand that is apparently being held by someone.

He opens his eyes and casts his gaze around the room. Blue’s asleep on a couch, head pillowed on Ronan’s jacket and feet on Noah’s lap. Noah’s leaning sideways on Ronan who has his head tipped back against the wall, the both of them also sleeping.

He looks at who’s holding his hand and feels a small jolt of surprise to see Adam. Adam, who’s supposed to be at New Haven and studying. With the hand Adam’s not holding, he reaches out and nudges at his shoulder.

“Adam,” he whispers. Nothing. He nudges at him a little bit harder and calls again. “Adam, hey.”

Adam blinks himself awake. “Gansey,” he breathes out. “How are you feeling?”

“Fine,” he answers. “What are you doing here?”

“Waiting for you to waking up. You had me— us —worried.”

“What about Yale?”

Confusion flashes across Adam’s face. “What do you mean what about Yale?”

“Well,” he starts. “You’re busy, aren’t you?”

As soon as the words are out of his mouth, he knows he said the wrong thing. Adam’s face falls and a hard glint replaces the concern in his eyes. “So what if I’m busy? You’re in the hospital, Gansey. Did you think I’d just ignore that?”

Irritation flashes at him. Barely a minute of conversation and they’re heading into an argument already. “Well, you’ve ignored me for the last month. What was I supposed to think?”

“You think I’m that callous? That heartless?” He sounds hurt. “I know I haven’t been the most reliable person lately and I’m sorry. I didn’t think it college would be that hard. But did you think I just stopped caring about you? That I don’t wish I can hear your voice and feel your hand in mine?”

There are tears hanging on his eyes now and he’s desperate to hold them back. “Then why did you stop calling me?”

Adam’s thumb wipes at the edge of his eyes. Even now, hurt and still a little bit angry, he cherishes the contact. “It’s hard, Gansey. I talk to you and I wish I could be right here in Henrietta with you. I miss you too much. I can’t bear it.”

The moment he stops talking he burrows his head on the hospital bed, hiding.

“Hey, hey. No.” Gansey reaches out and starts petting Adam’s hair. “You’re here. That matters more.”

“I’m sorry,” says Adam. He straightens up and looks Gansey in the eye. “I’m really sorry. I know I’ve been unfair to you. Everything feels too much and sometimes I get overwhelmed but please… Please always know, you’re important, too.”

“You guys done?” someone interrupts. “Because I have some words about both of your dramas.”

Gansey lets out a weak laugh. “Sure, Jane. For now, at least.”

He steps out of the car and takes a deep, deep breath. He hasn’t been back in this town for almost three years. Plane tickets are expensive and his friends have opted to just visit him in New Haven instead of the other way around.

“Takes for the ride,” he tells Ronan.

“No problem, Parrish. We’ve missed you around.”

“Yeah?”

“You fishing for compliments?” Ronan wraps an arm on his shoulders and drags him forward to start walking to Monmouth. “Of course we did. You know Noah bugs me about calling you at least once a week, he’s pissed he can’t use phones by himself.”

“And Gansey?”

“Oh, you’ll see,” he answers with a smirk.

Ronan unlocks the door and starts shouting, “Gansey?” No answer. “Gansey?! You here?”

A thump. “What, Ro?”

“Will you come down? I got you something.”

“Oh, god. Is it a calf?” his voice is sounding closer. “I told you I don’t care if they’re really cute, I can’t raise one. How would I even—“

He stops talking when he sees Adam. This is probably the most unkempt he’s seen Gansey. He’s wearing a rumpled sweater, his glasses are askew and his hair is a wild tangle. God, he’s missed him. It’s been three months since his last visit and god, he just misses him.

“Adam,” he breathes out. The distance between them disappears as Gansey practically flies to his arms into a hug.

He tightens his grip on Gansey, burying his head into his neck and taking a breath. He smiles into his neck, “Hey, Gansey.”

“Alright,” he hears Ronan say. “I’m gonna find Noah.”

“You gonna be staying long?” Gansey asks, still not letting go of him.

“Sort of?”

He pulls back. “Sort of?”

Adam waves a hand at the suitcases and luggage stacked besides Ronan’s car. “For as long as you’ll have me, I guess.”

Delight is evident on Gansey’s face. “You mean that?”

Adam smiles a soft smile at him. “I do.” He reels Gansey back in and presses a kiss to his check. “I told you we’d get our chance.”

He laughs. “I know. I know.” He showers kisses on Adam’s face. “I believed you.”

The next time he leans it, Adam meets him halfway. Their lips slotting together into a kiss that’s been years in the making. All the years, the unsaid words, the longing they had being poured into the push and pull of their mouths.

“Gansey,” he whispers against his lips. “Gansey. Gansey. Gansey.” He gives him a fierce kiss. “I love you. I will always love you.”

These dumb puffy cheeked chibi things I (almost) never post, usually of friends or my lovely heart @dandelion-demons but sometimes myself too HOW DO YOU TAKE YOUR COFFEE/TEA? Tea: plain because Im a respectable Chinese person thankyu, maybe with crystal sugar if it’s chrysanthemum tea since that is delicious Coffee: black since I love the bitter-y rich flavour, but only when I’m with friends because I’m actually not allowed coffee, my mum is under the impression it’s like alcohol and shouldn’t be consumed by minors under 18yo

It’s nice and smoky smelling and the only time in Canada/Alberta that the weather calms down, we don’t get much of it since it snows waayyyy before halloween but what we do have is wonderful NECK, CHEEK, OR NOSE KISSES? Hmmm nose if I was hard pressed but I don't like touching unless I absolutely trust that person and my neck is off limits to everyone, even close relatives and lovers, I literally spasm involuntarily and scream when Im touched there too much WHAT DOES YOUR HAPPY PLACE LOOK LIKE? A nice and warm place with internet access and a way to communicate people precious to me, preferably with my darling heart close by, extra points if its raining or snowing hard outside and there’s the sound of lightning as the fire crackles like some old novel FAVOURITE BREED OF DOG? MMMM CORGI DO YOU EVER WANT TO BE MARRIED? UM I’m fine with not getting married honestly but I’m a romantic at heart and I love the idea of it, it’s dumb but I’d love to marry someone I love since its a) another experience together and b) we can go travelling and dress up and have photo shoots and make dumb gross cards and have wedding anniversaries aaa Also helps with money and taxes and shit CURSIVE OR PRINT? Print but I love cursive but my cursive is ugly af FAVOURITE WEATHER? Rainy breezy slightly chilly crisp with the sell of rain, not too damp but wet enough that u can feel the rain and bright enough to see clearly without being blinding I tag @werefallen @dandelion-demons @dragonchargeweeb @exotisque @hoshmyposhes

I would actually point more towards Kaminari being the most probable one to react on screen, since he’s always got something to say in scenes like this one - and in general towards Kami, Baku and Sero being the ones to... confront? Kirishima specifically about this mission, not because I don’t want Mina to be there too! But generally as far as past arcs go Mina seems to be more part of the girls group than anything, and since Tsuyu and Uraraka were there too she might be between the ones reacting to Tsu and Ura more specifically (like she was the one to fawn over the two of them after their first day of internship) while Sero, Baku and Kami were the ones to react on screen to Unbreakable AND the ones Kiri spoke to about his insecurities to begin with... then again, given the flashback I do hope Mina will be proud of him on screen......... aaaahhhhhhhh I guess we won’t know until Horikoshi will finally show us, will we? ;u;

Can I ask you to not, like, dismiss the fact that I have, in fact, been drawing haikyuu? Aside from the last one, since I got this ask before posting that, but in the past month as I have made present more than once in answer to asks exactly like this one I HAVE been drawing haikyuu again - you think it makes me feel good to have hours of work been treated as if they never happened? That it makes me want to draw more? Just to have even more people come in my inbox and ask me why I’m not drawing haikyuu anymore, as if the stuff I drew doesn’t even exist? If you meant this ask as in “you’ve stopped drawing only that”, then I’m sorry, but bnha is the fandom that’s making me the happiest at the moment, I’m not stopping drawing for it. I am willing to draw more haikyuu, when I feel inspired to do so, but only if you guys stop treating hours of work as if they never existed. It’s really, really not a good feeling, nor something I have the wish to feel any more than strictly necessary - if the stuff I draw has to end up ignored anyway, then I’m just straight out not gonna draw it anymore

[Alexsezia] Mix killed a NOTCH...? Wow...

[Lie] - Maybe we should take her along when we go to deal with CP's...

[Sky] A bit of both? He couldn't even talk properly afterwards forever. She actually fried herself a bit too, regretted it immensely afterwards.

[gem] reminds me of days when I got bored of my music and turned on the game music then go annoyed because it didn't continually play.

[gem] no I mean it just stop for a while then played the next song I kind of just wanted constant music

Examining Kyle Gibson’s apathy toward strikeouts

Kyle Gibson has thoughts and feelings and opinions that sound like they make sense, but they don’t. He has Reasons with a capital R that he doesn’t need strikeouts to be successful, but his Reasons don’t actually hold up. Let's look at Gibson's public statements and see if we can figure out what he's really thinking.

1. "Guys who hit .300 are making outs seven out of 10 times"

Shawon Dunston once hit .300 and made an out 6.88 out of 10 times. That’s comical and also the closest anyone has ever come to the accomplishment that Gibson believes is the norm. Guys who hit .300 also draw walks, which are not outs. Guys who have an on-base percentage of .300 are making outs seven out of 10 times, but are also probably in danger of being sent to AAA. When Gibson faces Mike Trout (315 batting avg last season, 441 on-base) I hope he doesn’t think to himself, “Hey, this guy stinks, he makes outs almost seven out of 10 times!”

2. “If I’m able to keep my hard contact rate low, ground balls are almost automatic outs for me."

Gibson is correct that ground balls turn into outs at a good clip (76% or so). That fact shouldn’t be used as an argument against strikeouts, though, since strikeouts result in an out at a much better clip - about 99.9%..

And so even though he has an above average career ground ball rate (52%), some of those balls sneak through. Even more sneak through with the Twins’ defense behind the pitcher. Gibson seems to understand this.

3. “When hitters put balls in play, they’re going to get a hit sooner or later. But if I get five ground balls in a row, I’m more than likely going to get out of the inning. Offensive numbers will tell you that. If they only get a hit three out of every ten times they put the ball in play, that’s less than two out of five, so I like my chances.”

I guess Gibson is cool with not converting batted balls into outs at an above average rate. He knows balls will drop for hits 30% of the time. And it’s comforting to him! He uses this as evidence that he has the advantage and doesn’t need to strike anyone out. Just look at Kyle’s imaginary inning - he got three outs but gave up two hits and he likes it.

Imagine a carnival game where kids shoot a basketball and win a stuffed animal if they make a basket. It’s the carnie’s job to prevent this from happening, and because this is the worst carnival game ever, he’s allowed to very easily block the shot if he so chooses. Like Mutombo against Danny DeVito or something. If it were Kyle Gibson, he’d he sit back and say, “they only make it about 30% of the time, so I like my chances. No need to block the shot.”

Front offices have reached the opposite conclusion as Gibson: why even give them a shot? Give them fewer opportunities to get lucky. In other words, try to allow fewer balls in play.

And they’ve succeeded dramatically. Balls in play are way down and strikeouts are way up and it’s become a big point in the “games are too long” debate. But from a strategic standpoint, it’s rock solid.

Putting the strategy into place involves measuring what a pitcher does apart from balls in play - homers, walks and strikeouts. But since Gibson doesn’t understand the strategy (remember, he thinks the odds are in his favor even when running a .400 BABIP), he doesn’t understand a primary measurement for putting the strategy into practice:

On succeeding with a low K-Rate: “Maybe someday someone can explain FIP and xFIP to me, and I’ll get it."

Kyle understands pitchers don’t have much control over what happens after the ball leaves the bat. And that’s the fact that was the genesis of the stat Fielding Independent Pitching, so Kyle has a great foundation for understanding it. But because he uses the same fact to arrive at a different conclusion, he can’t wrap his mind around FIP.

4. "I’d benefit from increasing my strikeout rate, but the same time, you have to know what your strengths are. Going after strikeouts for 27 out of 27 guys isn’t my strength right now. Sure, there are times where I’d like to get more strikeouts, but 27 outs are 27 outs. Whether it’s 27 strikeouts or 27 ground balls doesn’t matter to me.”

After cutting through the hyperbole, it seems that Gibson simultaneously believes the following things:

a. I can’t get more outs via strikeout (Going after strikeouts for 27 out of 27 guys isn’t my strength right now)

b. I would benefit by getting more outs via strikeout (I’d benefit from increasing my strikeout rate)

c. It doesn’t matter to me if I get more outs via strikeout (27 outs are 27 outs. Whether it’s 27 strikeouts or 27 ground balls doesn’t matter to me)

a. I can’t get more outs via strikeout

Let’s tackle the first one first: Is it within the realm of possibility for Kyle Gibson to increase his strikeout rate?

People who know baseball certainly seem to think so. Last year at this time, even strikeout under-rater Terry Ryan saw the K skills:

"There's a lot of talk about his strikeouts. If you evaluate that guy pitch by pitch, he's got three plus pitches in his approach, but you wouldn't know it with his strikeout ratio," Ryan said. "He's just gotta attack the strike zone more and not nitpick. He shouldn't be a finesse guy. He's got stuff with a power slider, a fastball that can sit around 92-93 [miles per hour] and a good touch and feel for a change. So there's a good chance Kyle Gibson is a guy who can take a step or two forward."

And there have been articles written by really smart people examining his strikeout upside and saying, “he’s proven himself as a quality arm. Take a quality arm and add some extra strikeouts, and you’ve got a dominant arm. And it seems like he should be getting those extra strikeouts.”

It’s not all just potential. He has the results, too.

This excel sheet sorts every career start into one of three categories: high k%, medium k% and low k%.

Take a look at the top third by K% of his career starts - every start in which he K’d more than 17.8% of the batters he faced. In those 32 starts, he struck out an average of 24.96% batters. League average since Gibson broke in is about 20.4%.

In other words, he’s had a lot of games in which he had a high k percentage. So yes, he can do it.

I suppose the quote, “going after strikeouts for 27 out of 27 guys isn’t my strength right now.” might not mean, “I literally can’t strike out more guys”, but could be read as “If I tried something that isn’t a strength, even if I succeeded in raising my K rate, it would not benefit me overall because any gains would be negated by going away from my signature strength - inducing grounders.” If that’s what he meant, he’d obviously be contradicting himself when he said that raising his K rate would be beneficial. But furthermore, he’d be presenting an either/or type situation. As in, there’s a choice between being a groundball pitcher or a strikeout pitcher, because it’s impossible to increase one rate without decreasing the other.

Being a ground ball pitcher is part of Kyle Gibson’s identity. No one wants to lose part of their identity. Especially if they also think it will hurt their performance.

The line of thinking is this - adjusting approach to go after more swings-and-misses (whiffs) and not pitching to contact means he’d be throwing his sinker less often, meaning the success in missing bats would be offset by giving up fewer grounders when they do make contact.

Luckily, we have fangraphs correlation calculator tool so we can see if ground ball rate goes down when swinging strike rate goes up.

Not so much.

For Gibson himself, it’s a little different. Looking at the top third of starts by swinging strike rate, we see that his groundball rate doesn’t change much when he gets more whiffs, but his BABIP does.

Swinging Strike Rate - Upper Third of starts - 53.08 GB% and .312 BABIP

Swinging Strike Rate - Lower Third of starts - 51.80 GB% and .294 BABIP

On the other hand, these thirds are only composed of about 35 starts, a little more than a season’s worth of games.

Inducing grounders and suppressing BABIP isn’t the only thing to worry about. Pitchers also need to avoid giving up extra base hits. Maybe Gibson is freaked out about giving up harder hit baseballs if he tries to miss bats as opposed to throwing his sinker and going for contact, which means that even if the guy gets a hit on it, at least it won't be for extra bases.

First, is this true generally? We’ve seen bright guys like Zack Greinke trade in swinging strikes for pitching to contact, so there must be something to it. Let’s go back to the correlation calculator and check if Isolated Slugging Percentage goes up when swinging strike rate goes up.

The opposite! This shows that improving whiff rate actually makes ISO go down, even though it’s an extremely weak correlation and we shouldn’t actually say that.

I don’t have Gibson’s ISO-against, but we can look at hard%. The top and bottom third of swinging strike rate games produced almost the same exact Hard% and GB%. So, it doesn't seem like he has to choose between getting swings and misses or getting grounders OR avoiding hard contact.

Swinging Strike Rate - Upper Third of starts - 29.13 Hard% and 16.50 HR/FB%

Swinging Strike Rate - Lower Third of starts - 26.66 Hard% and 11.50 HR/FB%

According to our spreadsheet, Gibson’s home run per flyball does rise slightly in games where he gets more whiffs, though. Gibson’s fears that we just invented are maybe valid. Maybe he’s right to be scared that his GB% will go down and his hard% will go up resulting in both a higher BABIP and ISO against.

That doesn’t mean he shouldn’t increase his strikeout rate though. It’s pretty clear that any losses in those departments will be more than made up for by the increase in strikeouts. And he knows this.

b. I would benefit by getting more outs via strikeout

Switching Gears: 2017 and Why Video Games Worry People

Nintendo games have been a part of my life for most of what I remember of it. One of the first things I remember is playing Super Mario Brothers with my dad. I had to have been ...3? 4 at the oldest? I jokingly told a friend while we were discussing our most impactful Christmas & Birthday presents that the introduction of the NES altered the trajectory of my life forever from that point forward, but that isn't a joke.

There are people that contend that games rot your mind. This isn't true for me, and wasn't true for my friends growing up. I was friends with "the smart kids" all through my school years. I identified as "smart." My friends and I all played games to some extent. I admit that my desire and capacity to obtain and consume new games far outstripped many of my peers.

Nintendo's presentation of its new console, the Switch, has me at a crossroads. For the first time I've found myself considering the implications of continuing down the road I've been on literally as long as I can remember. It's not the quality of Nintendo's offering that has me thinking, but the stage of life I currently find myself occupying.

Video games have changed a lot since the 80's. Big budget AAA games have become an arms race of who can push the envelope even closer to photo-realism in both appearance and in actual interactions between the player and the game world. Games exist today that surpass 8-year-old Bill's wildest dreams. But instead of being filled with wonder, there is an undercurrent of obligation.

When I was 14 years old, a game that boasted hundreds of hours of gameplay would have blown me away. I would scramble to get a copy and play blissfully for hours and hours. And such a game would be rare. Today games are designed to be services that last as long as you are interested in them. Games like World of Warcraft, Destiny, Monster Hunter, Call of Duty, mobile Skinner-box style games, and even evolutions of old games like the latest Pokemon have systems in place to keep you coming back to that specific game. Player retention is a huge metric. While I may have played the games of my teenage years multiple times, it felt like re-reading a favorite book, or re-watching a favorite movie. Games today are more like years long spanning soap operas that give you just enough progress in each play session to keep you coming back again day after day after day.

Developers are getting really good at making you want to stick around! There's so much to fuss over that if I am really into an addicting game, I find myself thinking about it in the shower, sneaking some time searching a wiki or FAQ between meetings, and spending time away from the game planning what I want to do during my next play session. I used to think of this as a great feature of modern games. Today, one game can be so complicated that you could spend literally hundreds of hours on a single purchase. There was so much to do and think about that I didn't need to buy new games as often, generally spent less money on other forms of entertainment, and often could put the console to play these games (3DS, phone) in my bag and take it wherever I want to go.

Then I started growing my family. Adopting my daughter when she was nine years old didn't do much to change my habits, and we often played games together. She could already make her own cereal and knew not to stick her finger in an electrical outlet. Adding two more boys to the mix really put some things in perspective that I didn't understand when I was a kid.

I have a handful of personal goals that I want to achieve sometime in my life. Some of them are far off dreams, but require daily practice to manifest anything worthwhile. Sometimes it is studying Japanese. Lately, it has been reconnecting with drawing and art. Every piece of advice I read on how to improve is to prioritize daily practice and keep pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.

Once you have a handful of kids, your days get pretty crazy. After volleyball, music class, dinner, bath time, and story time, bed time, you're left with 1-2 hours a day of personal time to accomplish everything you must and want to accomplish. After cleaning up the messes of the toddlers (and the now teenagers), you're usually talking an hour tops.

So how do you spend that hour? Obviously you could play games, and that hour would go by really fast. But what about that nagging voice that says "hey, didn't you want to put out another comic?" or "how long has it been since you studied new Kanji?" This feeling shows up in quiet moments alone: the shower, long drives, standing in line, or waiting to fall asleep. I've found that you can ignore the voice for awhile with new games or tv shows, but eventually the gentle reminder becomes a deafening chorus. Cynicism seeps into your entire outlook and makes everything you do feel like a futile, pointless waste of hours you will never get back. When I get bored of a super complicated game, I start to beat myself up for obsessing over something “trivial” and ignoring all the other development I said I wanted to pursue.

Now, let me go on record: games are not “bad.” I love games. I will never stop playing games. But I recognize that when I am actively playing games, my brain focuses on every minute detail of every system to crowd out the unease I feel about not making progress towards dreams I've had my whole life. Having kids wakes you up to the fact that "the rest of your life" is finite and very short. My youngest is one, and he was only a little new born baby for the first few months of his existence. He's already starting to piece a few words together. In a few months he will be more himself, more independent, and that 1-year-old toddler will never be the same again. Today matters. And if enough todays go by without change you will continue on the same path "for the rest of your life."

I love my family and want to be an active part of it, but I still have my own personal ambitions. That means, if they’re awake, I try not play games unless they're playing too. It also means that if I want to continue to grow my personal dreams and ambitions outside of family, I have to do it when they're asleep, while also getting enough rest myself that I don't get fired at work. I'm starting to wrap my head around the idea that, in the long term, I beat myself up less if I use that spare hour every day towards my dreams and ambitions instead of retrieving magical rocks for characters inside computer simulations.

All that said, I pre-ordered a Switch because I know that my kids and I are going to have a blast with Super Mario Odyssey, or 1-2-Switch, or, when they're old enough, Zelda. Just like playing with my dad in the late 80’s/early 90’s, Nintendo time is family time. But I have become increasingly critical of purchasing new games that only I will play. It's not that games are a waste of time, it's that if I ever want to create the things I've told myself I will make time for someday, someday must be today, or it will never happen. The last year slipped through my fingers faster than I ever thought possible. I vividly remember moments from 18 months ago that feel like yesterday. Playing games by myself in my free time accelerates the pace of time slipping by. If I don't use my time now, today, in a way that directs me towards the future I want, it will never happen. In 2017, my goal is to slowly course correct the ship that is my career, goals, and ambitions, even if it’s only an hour at a time.
