November Gamedev Progress

AHhhhhhh! Another month over!? I have no idea where it went :(

Calander

Changed the total number of Months from 13 to 12, added Seasons which last 3 Months. Seasons have weighted Weather so more Snow in the last one (Winter?), more Rain in the second one! (Spring?). Trying to come up with some other Weather events that wont be too disruptive. It was really foggy a few days ago so now I wanna try and code that X'D

Saving/Loading

This is the big one, what I spent most of this month working on;

I've set up a Save/Load system! I'll slowly give all the different major objects their own part but currently I've got Trees/Grass/Rocks/some system stuff all being recreated correctly in a loaded world!

So in this gif I start a game, save (note the debug come up), quit to title (lacking a title XD), then start a new game; it's a different map! Then I quit again and load the saved world! <3 <3 <3

Got the first batch of Buildings stored! Buildings that Craft Items and those that Convert them all set!

And also Benches and their tops work! This was an extra bit of challenge, since instead of just replacing a Bench with say the Distiller, I update it with a SubType, so I've added a check and a loop to the load code. If it creates a building with a SubType it will do a second go of the Creation code and it gets upgraded to a Distiller!

There's still more to do with the Save system, I've been taking it slow to ensure that I don't mess anything up. Saving the customisation of Buildings that are made out of multiple parts like Houses is gonna be a challenge. I have an idea of how to do it, it's just getting it to work will be a pain.

Also saving the ownership data, say for a Goblin and it's Home/Work, or a Pet and it's Nest. I can't save the object ID between games so I'll have to use the object type and it's coordinates.

LAST MINUTE ADDITION!

Got Buildings Saving their Carpets/Rugs, should be able to store the Wall/Floor colours and Building Part placements (like Beds) the same way! But I am tired, and hungry, so maybe for next months update? :S

Bugs

LOADS of little fixes here and there, such as;

Fixed a bug were Item shadow's were clipping underneath flooring and snow.

Snow and Flooring now use the -bbox_top so they have a lower depth priority, and I added an offset to Item's depth (forgot I had to add it to the bounce code!)

Fixed a bug where Dry Grass wouldn't be recreated when Loading a game.

Fixed a bug where Dry Grass wouldn't spawn on Beaches.

Fixed a bug where loading a game would make fully grown trees sprout a new one each time you loaded.

Fixed Tall Grass not spawning in Swamp Biomes.

Updated the Culling System to properly cull Buildings that are made out of multiple parts, previously it just didn't cull them. Now when the main part gets culled all the other parts get culled into a part list that later gets checked when the master is unculled. Getting this to work with the Save/Load system though is gonna be a PAIN!

Fixed a bug where Houses would move when you saved and loaded :S

Visuals

Set up Flooring to give you a slight visible y offset, so it's like you're actually standing on something higher!

Swapped the offset on Paving for one on Flooring, and adjusted the Depth on JUST Flooring, so now you can stand behind the raised floor! :D

Got Snow set up for working on Roofing, noticed some issues with my Roofing autotiling, so I think I need to remake that from scrap. :(

OK! Scrapped that Roofing because the thinner sections were giving me a massive headache trying to autotile. Made a much simpler one which was about all I could draw without tearing my hear out or the mouse out of the computer.

Might need to adjust the height a bit more, so trees and the statue don't clip through?

Adjusted the offset for drawing roofing, and changed the Create/Destroy selector to more accurately show that you are over roofing, looks better to me.

I also extended the height of the extra bit of Roof drawn on lowest so it connects with Walls, I might change that and instead put it as part of the Wall itself so it's like the wall is taller?

Lighting

I keep messing with them, I think this is better? Did some rework with how darkness works and layered up all lights so there's three levels of brightness from each source.

Why can't you fly faster?! The wind was even helping you for crying out loud!

The moment you heard the new recruits of the Shie Hassaikai, Toga and Twice, speakinv with that man that a few days ago Chisaki had overhauled his arm about some fucked up plan about revenge you had widen your eyes in terror and sneaked out form the mess of cops and heroes... you could get to the rest of the gang later, now you needed only one thing.

Prevent the leader of the league to take your boyfriend's arms away... it wasn't fair! They did threw the first move in some way!

You wiped your tears away with a scoff... you should have been there to calm down the other gang and your boyfriend before Magne, it was her name right? Attacked him... you could have prevented this with your quirk even!

But Kai would be so worried and angry... he insisted that he was making a "cure" for this world... but still he preferred taht you only used your quirk on emergencies.

Well. Fuck his arrogant ass. This IS an emergency.

You widened your eyes in horror when you spoted the van that your boyfriend was had just crashed with another and fell down.

"Kai!" You whimpered, your wings hurting from how much force you were using them to get there faster.

"Which one is the finished product? Oh well..." the blue haired man rasped out, taking the quirk erasing bullets for himself as Chisaki darkened his eyes.

"Give it back."

Shigaraki stared at him numbly before slowly returning back to talking.

"You wanna know something, Overhaul?" He raised his hand a bit, coming in the direction of his arm "Someone who despises quirks so much-"

"GET YOUR HANDS OFF FROM HIM!" He widened his eyes at recognizing the voice coming from above before you simply kicked Shigaraki on his chest from all of your strenght, the force and the impact from how fast you were flying helped you a bit.

"(Y/n)..." he spoke almost in disbelief. The thought of those heroes laying their hands on you was enough to leave him enraged, but you were there... howering over him like a animal would protect their partner or puppy, panting to a point he was even worried you were going to hyperventilate.

You turned a bit your head to look at him, that angry gaze dissapearing as only a worried and scary frow formed when you looked at him.

"Are you okay?" You asked and almost cried at seing that one of his arms were already cutted...

You weren't that late but you weren't so soon either...

"Well, looks like not only now I have to take down the king but the queen as well." Shigaraki rasped out and you widen your eyes at seing Mr. Compress threatening to lay his hands back on Chisaki.

He gritted his teeth before you conjured a celestial light on your hands and threw directly at the man merciless... Fighting for you was never right, but those people were trying to hurt your boyfriend... and even despite knowing all of that fucked up stuff he did, you couldn't help but still love him... after all, if everyone knew about his own past like you did, some people would even understand why he acted like this.

"(Y/n), get out form here-" Your boyfriend said in anger yet worry as you tried to unlock those handcuffs.

"I am not leaving you here Kai!" You shouted before getting back up again at sieng a raven haired man going to send blue flames towards you guys.

You flapped once your wings in such a strenght that it was enough to bring the flames to an end, the fire quirk ised even arching both eyebrows in amusement at your skills.

You did the same thing as you did with the other man, but this I guy dodged your attack just on the last second...

Chisaki was still trying to set his left arm free at least... hsi girlfriend was out there fighting for him even despite after all he did...

What kinda of a a man was he?!

Shigaraki got close and looked a bit at you before smirking sadistically down at Chisaki.

"That slot of yours got some guts."

"Shut the hell up Shigaraki." He growled as he squirmed violently on that bed, while the blue haired man only smiled even more wickedly.

"Huh... te me one thing Overhaul." He lifted his hand up again "Is that woman there valuable to you?"

Just on that moment you went to check up on Kai you saw the horrible scene in front of you. Your legs moved without thinking and you knew it that you wouldn't be able to reach your arm out to push Shigaraki Tomura from there... but your wings were faster and bigger.

"NO!" You shouted and jumped while opening your wings, one of them being touched accidentally by Shigaraki's all five fingers.

You and Kai widened your eyes in utter horror as you let out a painful sound through gritted teeth and fell on your knees besides Kai.

"(Y/N)! NO!" He ripped his arm out but his body was still caged by the straps.

Shigaraki lifted his hand up to look at it with false amusement before looking down at you without any signs of pity again.

"That was... unexpected."

Chisaki let out a angry shout before going to touch the grow with his bare hand before Shigaraki just yanked you by your left wing and brought the knife to cut it out the last remains of the one he touched.

You let out a pained and tortured cry at this as Chisaki immediately retreated his hand back.

"Huh. With this you at least learns how to think... interesting." He looked at you "Tell me honestly how can you had attures this dipshit?"

You wanted to scream and send curses to him that God would be ashamed of you... but the pain of having your wing taken off like that was just too hurtful.

"Let her go." Kai growled before he winced and slapped Compress arm out of him when he had injected something on his neck without noticing.

He suddenly started to feel drowsy... his vision getting blurred but getting better when Shigaraki brought you and him closer to Chisaki's eyes.

"Since we wanted out revenge, consider this as a little bonus!" He smiled widely at him before placing his last finger on your wings... cutting it off the moment he saw his quirk effect almost reaching your back. "Now look at this! Wasn't I generous? You still have your 'angel', a fallen and wingless one!"

You fell back in your knees... a hurtful and pathetic cry left your lips along with a sob as you reached behind your back only to wince at touching just close enough to your skin...

And before you could even blink Shigaraki and his commurates had gotten out of there as the sounds of sirens were heard form afar.

You opened your eyes again to see him, the effect of the drug completly gone as his pupils trembled even at the sign of the last remains of your wings, now merely dust, spread on the concrete like some dust...

"Angel... y-your- your-"

"That's alright..." you whispered with a sad smile, making his heart clench on a unforgivable way... he took notice that drops of blood were dripping down form your back and falling into the ground and the sign made him want to puke in horror and disgust.

"... you never liked them anyway, right? At least part of my quirk is gone now.." you smiled at him and closed your eyes in favor of stopping the tears form the pain you were feeling.... a failed attempt.

He widened his eyes even more at your words, guilt and sorrow finally hitting him like a damn train as you trembling hands undies the straps he had on his body.

The moment he got into a sitting position he couldn't help but let out a sob, the amount of events tht just happened being so much even for him to take... he muffled it with his remaking hand but he could feel his tears spilling like a waterfall from his eyes at the swing the pool of blood close to you. You furrowed your eyebrows before he pushed you against his chest.

He knew it that he couldn't use his quirk to get your wings back... they being cutted out and disintegrated gave him no possible choices of returning those huge, annoying and beautiful white wings back...

He let out a pathetic cry before burring his face in the crook of your neck, clinging on you but careful enough with his grip due to your possible pain.

(1/2 joke huhu) The scenes for each member are really nice visually and seem to be framed well, but the multiple cuts within a shot + all the zoom transitions + the camera glitch/ record scratch effects towards the rap break + the utter LACK of choreography shots just really ain't doing it 😭 It reminds me of how they treated the Eclipse MV of Got7 hnnngh

When you get to compare it to their live performance with the full choreography right after it's like--?!?!?! I can't look awaaay and Jang Wooyoung slid across the stage again ughhhh save me and save his poor knee

In summary: I'm still trash, but give Gentlemen's Game by 2PM a spin if you're feeling up to it!!! 💙

Famicom Detective Club Review (Both Games)

I really dislike writing these together but I wanted to be able to say everything for certain in terms of how you should go about playing them and comparisons between the two.

I'm not going to really talk about story too much because the story is the game and the game is the story but imagine a kid who's gotten into some trouble but a detective takes him under his wing. This is his first proper mission without his teacher. (He's still there but he's doing a different case).

This is an Ace Attorney style game from before Ace Attorney was even born. This visual novel has the added bonus of gorgeous graphics, designs and animations. Sometimes there are even little things in the background to catch your attention like a kid messing around in his shoe locker, it's pretty funny.

This even has Smash history. Yep. Ayumi was a Smash trophy in Melee and I believe even a spirit in Ultimate.

If I've hooked you, then let's proceed.

So which game should you play first? Originally, the games released with the Missing Heir and then the Girl Who Stands Behind released after. TGWSB is a prequel. I feel like neither way would be wrong because of the way you learn about these characters. Playing The Missing Heir will give you insight to the main character because it's an amnesia story. It can add context to certain scenes in TGWSB, but if you want to already have those scenes in mind, you should start with TGWSB. It's nothing major in terms of plot points, neither is mandatory to enjoy the other and neither really spoils the other. I personally played TGWSB first but I think I'd have rather went with TMH. But I'm also the kind of person that likes playing sequels first, it doesn't cause me as much issue as some others might have.

There's also a naming system that allows you to carry over your chosen name (as long as you have the save data) from one game to the next (doesn't matter which order). You don't have to do that though, it's just a fun little continuity thing. As far as length goes, my Switch says "Played for 5 hours or more" for each game but it matters how you play visual novels. The text boxes are voiced but you can just skip those if you want, I kind of do half and half.

There are some points where it feels like you will need to ask the same questions over again even to the same answer because there are only so many options. I don't think it runs the same way as Ace though where you have to ask in a specific order to get the desired answer or penalizes you for guessing wrong. In fact, with TGWSB, I didn't look anything up until Chapter 11 where you have 4 places you can visit around the school, I did every option for every area but you had to do one thing in order to trigger another thing, even though it was never clear that I triggered it in the first place. It also had a mysterious "Open" option. I've noticed that sometimes it'll have an option already available that can't be used yet (like checking the trash can) but that Open option was never relevant to that area.

There are no romance options or alternate endings but there is a "personality test" and "compatibility" with Ayumi at the ending of TGWSB but that's actually gained by what order you ask things (when interacting with her specifically), as well as looking at other girls too many times but it doesn't affect anything, just what sentences you get at the ending to say "what kind of person you are" but I feel it could've benefitted by giving you actual choices to determine those things especially with a game as trial and error as this. It's just not as clear cut as I'd like it to be and the reward seems lacking.

What I will say is that The Missing Heir seems like a proper sequel graphically. I mentioned the animations with the last game being good but this improves upon it even further, which is odd considering these remakes released at the same time and I suppose were developed at the same time.

I liked TMH more than TGWSB but as a report card for both games, I think that the story is decent, Ayumi is great, the animations are exquisite, but the gameplay is sort of lacking. I've played a few visual novels so I know that sometimes you can get lost with options and have to test the grounds but sometimes you do everything and then need to do it again and don't even know why you're doing it. Sometimes they correlate to what the character is saying, and you can pick up on it but that's only sometimes. I think that's part of the reason I liked The Missing Heir more, is that I played it with a walkthrough and I played TGWSB blind.
