Fifteen Minutes

Summary: Who knew that seeing a concert would lead to getting chased by the police and ending up with a girl’s number?

Hanging out with my two best friends on the weekend is normal. I’m always the designated driver because they have been in one too many wrecks with me in the car. I’m the goody-goodie driver, but they meet me after my street racing days. I got caught by the cops too many times, yet I still own the same car. The old Nissan 240SX S14, she looks more like a grandmother car with the color I painted her but that’s the best type of camouflage. But with all the upgrades I had invested into her over the years, she’s built for drifting and not grocery-getting.

Nowadays I follow the rules, haven’t heard a police siren for years. We go to a convenience store and grab some snacks. Because Soo-Young wants to go to an underground punk rock concert. Wendy immediately agreed that it was a good way for us to all get out and have a good time. “Plus you need to have more fun, (Y/n)!” I rolled my eyes but my old crust pants don’t lie. Instead of wearing my normal get up of something pastel and cute. My friends dressed me in my old punk rock clothes. Now here we are, I let them pick out a few things while grabbing a bag of gummy bears.

I open up a water bottle and take a swig from it after I pay for everything. Then she walks in, no way, she looks like a girl I used to date before she moved across the country. I spit out some of my water, quickly wiping it off with my jacket. Hoping neither Wendy or Soo-Young saw that: they did. “Go up to her and talk to her!” Soo-Young encourages me, and I nod, faking my confidence. When I get up next to her my body goes ‘oh god we’re gay’ and starts panicking. And yes that does mean I knocked over a stack of styrofoam cups. She giggles at me before going to the counter, I clean up my mess with a bright red face.

When we get into my car I put my head on the steering wheel and groan. “Aw it’s okay,...” Wendy tells me. I put it into reverse and drive us towards the concert venue. That’s when Wendy lets out an exaggerated sigh, “Did anyone else think that looked like the girl in (Y/n)’s photo album? Or was it just me!” I groan again, “Yes! That’s why I panicked!” Soo-Young laughs, “You know that makes so much sense.” I roll my eyes, “Remember who I was just talking about, well, she’s driving a motorcycle and she’s coming up next to us!” My eyes go wide as I look into my rear view mirror, “What?!” Wendy nods, and there she is.

“Okay don’t look over yet, I’ll help you through this!” I nod, and Soo-Young tells me, “Look over now!” And as I do the girl with the bright orange hair smiles at me. I go redder than a tomato, and just like that she’s in front of me and makes the green light. The light turns red before I even have a chance to run the yellow. “That’s too bad, a girl like that only comes around once in a lifetime.” I nod, “I’m sure we’ll see her at the show.” Soo-Young shakes her head at me, “A girl like that knows about a bazillion other underground shows.” I don’t have time to wait for this red light then. With that thought I slam my foot on the gas, I have to see her again.

As I speed towards her, I think how thankful I am that this doesn’t have any turn offs. Because it’s a big hill that ends in the next city. That’s when I hear the police sirens, I gulp, “(Y/N)! YOU NEED TO PULL OVER!” Wendy cries out from the backseat, the look of fear in my eyes is evident, “I didn’t renew my driver’s license though!” I say with a slight shake of fear when it hits me that I can outrun them. “You’re a good citizen, we’ll talk them out of a ticket.” Soo-Young says with a gulp, I smirk, I guess it’s time to show them my hidden talents. “Don’t worry about it!” I exclaim, turning up the radio, as I slam on the gas shifting it down to deal with the decline of the hill. As we approach the first major curve I slam on the brakes, my tires screeching and smoking as I hit the next curve just as hard. I pass the girl I was chasing on the motorcycle and speed down the hill. Wendy and Soo-Young holding onto their seats tightly as I take the curves fast and hard. The police car having a hard time keeping up, that car was never made for drifting. Just for powerslides and looking ugly I think as I see the big billboard for the next city.

I spin us around and behind the sign, turning off the engine and lights. Thank god it’s night time, the cop finally catches up and speeds past the sign. I let out a sigh, and try to start the car again, “Oh my god, I can’t believe my car won’t start.” I groan, “I”m sorry guys, I shouldn’t have done that--” “What! THAT WAS SO COOL AND FUN!” I look down with my eyes wide, and see it’s out of gas, “Where’s the nearest gas station?” I ask softly, “22 miles from here.” I sigh, “But now we can’t go to the concert,…” Soo-Young shrugs and pats my back, “We could always walk downtown to see if we can find it.” I nod and throw my jacket into the car before locking it. We walk through the bushes and down into a residential area to see colorful lights.

“We made it!” Wnedy let’s out excitedly!” We make ourselves to the edge of the driveway and we groove out for a little. That’s when Wendy says, “Look, there’s that girl!” I gasp, no way, “You already proved you were cool, you don’t have to go over there and talk to her!” Wendy tells me, worried about me. I shrug and walk over towards her, “You’re here for the show too?” I ask her, and she nods, “Just trying to get out of the house” I laugh, “Yeah, aren’t we all,... It’s been a long time in quarantine.” She laughs, “Yeah, I like how you styled your hair.” She tells me, “I like your hair color. They say the color orange means you’re bubbly and sweet.” She giggles before putting a note in my hand, “I’ll let you find out for yourself” and walks over into the crowd.

When I make my way toward the group my mouth is agape. “I-I-I- I got,... I-oh my god!” Wendy gently pats my back, telling me to take my time, “How did it go?” Soo-Young asks excitedly. I grin, “I got her number!” Soo-Young elbows Wendy, “I told you!” I laugh, “What you guys talk about?”

I finally get up the guts to text her the next day, “Hey I’m that girl you met at the concert, I’m (Y/n).” She texts back almost immediately, “I’m Seulgi.” Before I can even reply to her she texts me again, “Let’s grab some coffee at Panera Bread so I can see your beautiful face again.” Oh god, I wish I was a confident gay like she is. I tell Soo-Young what’s happening and she helps me dress nicely.

Needless to say, but that date led to many more, which led to holding hands and kissing in public. To riding on the back of her motorcycle, and me taking her drifting. To say the least when it comes to her my heart is on my sleeve. Or to put it in a better way, in her hands, “Babe, I’m home!” That’s her now, God I love her.

Wendy and Soo-Young could not believe me when I told them that she asked me to be her girlfriend. They called her up and she laughed, “I’m Seulgi, and yeah I asked (Y/n) to be my girlfriend, cause she’s cute, beautiful and funny.” I blush and wave at her from behind the two of them, she laughs and waves back. My friends introduce themselves and talk to her acting like they were my protectors.

I run downstairs and throw my arms around her and hug her. “I love you” She grins and kisses my nose, “I love you too, I brought home cookies from work.” I raise my eyebrow, “What’s the occasion?” She shrugs, “Just wanted to show my girlfriend how much I love her.” She places the plate down and I unwrap them, and they have words written on ‘em. “I love you with all my heart, I’m so glad I get to come home to you and call you mine.” I giggle, “You’re too cute, I’m glad I get to call you mine too. I love you too, Baby.” She grins, “Let’s kick back and watch a movie together, and eat these cookies of course.” I kiss her cheek and we finish off our day like that. Five months in and I know she’s the one,...

Sam Amico - Finally on Top, Writing What He Loves

Sam Amico is a self-professed basketball junkie whose lengthy career in sports journalism now finds the Akron, Ohio native covering the NBA for Sports Illustrated. Yes, that Sports Illustrated. The one most young men and woman growing up in the 1980s and 1990s waited patiently by the mailbox for, only to quickly tear threw the pages and digest the stories within. While magazines and subscriptions aren’t what they used to be, SI is still one of the biggest players in the sports media game, especially for those gifted with the ability to tell a tale via the written word and not relying solely on hot takes and video footage. It’s fitting, as Amico grew up near an NBA city during a time when the Showtime Lakers and the Boston Celtics dominated the scene. There was Larry and Magic, Kareem and Robert. The Bad Boys in Detroit came into their own and a man named Michael took the league, and the world, by storm. The young Amico didn’t have a chance.

Played the Game

He grew into a 5-foot-9 sweet-shooting guard at nearby Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy in nearby Cuyahoga Falls. He parlayed that success into a two-year stint playing for Northeastern Christian Academy across the street from Villanova in Pennsylvania. While there, he set the school record for most 3-pointers in a game, a mark he’s quick to point out lasted all of there seasons. The school later combined with Ohio Valley College in Parkersburg, W.Va. to become Ohio Valley University. Amico’s old coach, Bill McGee, stayed on board to coach. Amico, meanwhile, turned his attention to his own career. Originally wanting to get into coaching, he quickly realized that he could utilize his best assets, a great sense of humor and even better gift of written gab and combine that with his love of basketball. He quickly said hello to the world of journalism which initially took him out west to Wyoming and a one-man show at a paper in Rawlins, Utah.

The Report

He still feels his proudest moment came two years later, when he wrote a 14-part series on the history of the Wyoming state basketball tournament while working at a paper in Casper. Additional stops including the Bluefield Daily Telegraph, Observer-Reporter in Washington, among others, eventually landed Amico at the Sports Editor at The Intelligencer in Wheeling. Amico experienced success with both the readers and staff. It’s here he began his well-circulated Amico Report, a free newsletter at the time dealing with all things NBA. It was that digital newsletter that eventually catapulted Amico to his current path. He's also a published author, with his first book, "A Basketball Summer" hitting the shelves in 2002, later followed by three more: "Dribbles of Champions," "The Ultimate Basketball Trivia Book," and 'Three-Ball: The History of Basketball's Three Point Shot." He later lost his job in Wheeling due to an incident he takes full responsibility for and worked his way back north to the Cleveland Area, eventually catching on with Fox Sports and Fox Sports Ohio. It was there Amico experienced a renewal not only in his professional life, but also his personal one. Lessons were learned, but Amico found happiness again with a second marriage, as and his new wife brought together their blended family and eventually added a third son to the mix soon after. The Amicos now live in Medina, Ohio. Naturally, basketball is still a big part of their lives.

What got you into sports journalism in the first place? You did seem to gravitate to basketball more so than other sports. Was that just an extension of your playing days and your love for basketball as a whole?

It was indeed my love of basketball that led to my career choice. I never set out to become a writer. At first, I wanted to be a coach. I envisioned myself coaching high school basketball while teaching health or typing or some other fairly mundane course. But I also loved to write. I did it in my free time, just as a hobby. My best friend is several years older and became a sports television anchor, and I'd sometimes tag along with him to work. I was fascinated that you could make a career out of this. I loved basketball and writing always came easiest for me in terms of schoolwork. My roommate in college would stay up all night sweating over his essay for English class and bring back a C-minus. I'd crank something out in an hour, maybe less, and always aced it. (As an aside, he got considerably better grades in every other subject.) So, about my junior year of college, it finally dawned on me—why not put together my passion for basketball with the one thing I seemed to do moderately well? When I figured it out, writing about basketball as a career became my mission.

You eventually became an editor at multiple places. But neither was in a basketball-heavy community in terms of the pro game. Did you have a sense deep down that you’d need to get closer to home, or to a major market, to get to where you wanted to be? Was leaving the Wheeling paper a blessing in disguise in that respect?

To be honest, when I took my first newspaper job in a tiny little Wyoming town, I had no clue what I was doing. I showed up for the first day of work and was immediately told to interview the high school swimming coach. I didn't know anything about swimming, had no idea what to ask. I could barely swim myself. That was the start of a long journey of covering things I had very little knowledge of. In Rawlins, I was a one-man staff. I shot my own photos, wrote 3-5 stories a day, designed my own pages, came up with all the headlines and at times, even helped deliver the paper. Little did I know, it would be great practice for running my own website close to 20 years later. But all the while, yes, I dreamed of getting to an NBA market to cover the NBA. I wasn't obsessed with it, but it was always in the back of my mind, pushing me to work harder and get better. I never had a sense that it would actually happen. My goal once I started writing a lot was to just to do the best job I could and let the chips fall where they may. Eventually, when I landed in Wheeling, I decided to start an NBA email newsletter as a hobby on the side. Writing an email cost nothing and receiving it cost nothing. So, I made nothing. But if I remember correctly, we eventually started running it in the sports section, too. That little newsletter is the very reason I am where I am today, in my 12th year covering the NBA on a full-time basis. I will always be grateful for my time in Wheeling and I look back fondly on it today. Ownership, management, the editors and my co-workers allowed me the freedom to write what I wanted and tackle some interesting topics. It was there that I developed a strong work ethic, and it is one I still try to carry into my assignments today. I learned in Wheeling that there was no place for excuses—just do the job. When I lost my job there, deservedly so, it reminded me about the value of integrity. It was an important reminder and lesson I have not forgotten.

You’d previously written “Basketball Summer” and also kept people up to date with League knowledge via the Amico Report. But once covering the NBA was your full-time job, what was it like being that involved, especially given the Cavaliers were your hometown team? As a journalist, you remain impartial, but growing up a fan, was it difficult to keep the two sides of you separate at first?

Actually, while I grew up outside of Akron, I liked the Cavaliers but never considered myself a huge fan by any stretch. Sadly, I lived and died with the Browns, a lost cause of a franchise that remains near and dear to my heart today. I just happened to like the NBA as a total product, growing up in what I still consider the golden era of Magic, Michael and Larry. By the time I finally became a full-time NBA writer covering my "hometown" team, I had learned how to be impartial. That's one of about 200 reasons why it was a good thing I didn't get the job straight out of college. I had so much to learn about journalism. I had to spend time in the minors before getting to the big leagues. But I also realize that I am sort of an extension of the fans. I didn't celebrate in print when the Cavs won the title in 2016, for instance, but I did write with more enthusiasm and the stories were just more positive by nature. It's always easier to write about a winner. Quite honestly, though, it makes no difference to me. I try to cover the Cavs and NBA with as much fairness and passion as I did when I first got the job. The success and failures of the local team honestly have no bearing on how I approach the job, or even my enjoyment of the job. Sometimes, it's even better when they're bad. When LeBron James is in town, so are about 100 other reporters. When he's not, I'm generally one of about five or six full-time people covering the team.

You wrote for both Fox Sports and Fox Sports Ohio, and on occasion got to do some on-air analysis and interviews. How did that differ from what you were used to and did your public profile blow up further from that? What was the experience like for your sons and wife to see dad on television, talking basketball? Could you foresee a career path that leads to commentary either courtside or in-studio on a full-time basis?

I've been doing television since 2010, less now than most years, but still some. It's quite a bit different because unlike writing, you don't have time to sit down and assemble a thought. The lights come on and you just ... GO. You also don't have a delete key, so whatever you say is out there for forever, especially now in the day of social media. The first time I did it, I was terrified. The second time, I was also terrified. The third time, I didn't even think about it. It just felt natural. My best buddy in TV gave me some good advice: "Look two places, either at the person you're talking to or at the camera. Sit up. Smile. And for the love of Pete, put your hands on the desk and not below it." That was a start. I have also done some stand-up reporting for TV, in which I look at nothing but the camera, hold the mic with one hand and still have no idea what to do with the other. As for my public profile, yes, it did go up a notch locally. The biggest differences I noticed were that total strangers occasionally began asking me for selfies at Cavs games (as opposed to just yelling that I'm a hack), and mostly, the players and coaches and front-office types began calling me by my first name before I had even introduced myself. Earned or not, there's a level respect that you're granted with simply being on TV. That said, it's always been my least favorite part of the job. You have to worry about your hair, about your tie, about how you dress and about not doing natural things like sneezing or yawning. But they ask me to do it and promise a check, so I shut up and make the best of it. It's never been what I set out to do, though. My family thought it was cool at first, but those days are long gone. Unless I take them to the studio, they don't watch. Sometimes even then I'll look over at them during a commercial break and they're staring at their phones. The good news is I have a toddler who is fairly animated when I come on the screen. I figure I have another three or four years before he too finds that part of my job to be old news.

The Amico family, prior to the birth of the third son, is an image of a blended family that can find success in coming together.

Finally, like most kids into sports, you probably grew up reading Sports Illustrated. It was the go-to for sports reporting and feature stories. Working for them now, does the image you might have had in your head match the reality and how has the Amico Report morphed into Amico News in terms of content and readership?

Well, let's put it this way -- when I call a potential source for a story and say I'm from Sports Illustrated, they almost always give me a lot of time, say more interesting things, and are overall just more polite. Between the time I worked for FOX and SI, I launched my own NBA website. Fortunately, my time at FOX provided an audience, and enough of those readers followed me to AmicoHoops to turn it into a full-time job. I actually started to earn more on the website than I did at FOX. Problem was, when you factor in TV work, I was putting in 12-14 hours a day on the website during the season, and that included weekends. It's always nice to run your own thing and be your own boss. I did it for four years with a surprising degree of success. But Sports Illustrated made the decision easy for me. They basically wanted me to move what I had been doing on my site and put their brand behind it. I can also say I have never had more readers. That's not because of anything I'm doing or because I've suddenly reinvented the wheel. It's because everyone knows the name "Sports Illustrated." Overall, I really like their modern direction. They have moved away from the longform pieces (though plenty still remain in the magazine), and have assigned or are in the process off assigning a writer to every team in the country -- NFL, NBA, MLB, the NCAA power conference programs, and even NHL I believe. Readership has increased significantly for SI across all platforms. Not long ago, I started to suspect the brand was dying, but it feels like it's become a player again. My role is actually to cover the entire NBA, while also focusing on the Cavs, much like I did for FOX before they pivoted to video-only in 2015. It's a great role and one I've been comfortable in for at least a decade now. Mostly, I feel very blessed to be where I am in my career and am extremely grateful for each step along the way -- from Wyoming to West Virginia to back where I grew up. Read the full article

Season 1 Thoughts

There were a lot of creative decisions (storylines, editing, pacing) that I didn’t agree with when it came to Roswell, New Mexico, but instead of focusing on the negative I’m going to go over what I did love about the first season. (Rest assured that if they’re not renewed for a second season, I will then make a post to roast the shit out of everything I didn’t agree with, including the events of the finale).

Things I loved about the various characters/storylines (omitting all of my gripes):

Liz - Jeanine gave such a powerhouse performance as Liz. She’s so strong and smart. Half the things that needed to be solved on the show were solved by her. She’s warm and kind. Throughout the series she’s given so many opportunities to be bitter and not do the “right” thing - but she does it anyway. Liz is a good person and I’m so glad she was able to open her heart up to love again. With that said, I love that so much of her storyline was focused, not just on Max, but the love she had for her sister. Sister love is POWERFUL and unless you’re a girl who has a sister, you might not fully understand what kind of sacrifices they would make for each other but this show got that love right.

Isobel - Isobel is a person who has been used and abused since she was a young teenager. Her abuse may not have been physical and known like Michael’s or Alex’s, but it was mental and present. She allowed herself to love and she was ultimately betrayed for it more than anyone else. She may not have made peace with the situation yet, but she was able to stand up for herself in the end and now she’s going to start exploring her own abilities. For someone who always just wanted to be “normal” she’s accepted who she is. She’s going to figure out exactly what she can do and become stronger than ever.

Max - Max loves with his whole heart. He makes mistakes (BIG ones), he carries guilt for those mistakes, but in the end he tries to make up for them. His love for Liz and his want to help correct his mistakes ultimately cost him his life. For someone who is largely deemed as selfish, it was a selfless act. He didn’t try to save Rosa to be a hero. He tried to save her because he thought he could, because he wanted to give back a life that was stolen, because he wanted Liz to have her sister again.

Jenna - Badass with a heart of gold. Another great example as to the profound amount of love one can have for their sister. The show could have turned Jenna in to a villain, but they didn’t. She had feelings for Max but she recognized that Max’s feelings for Liz were greater. She knew what they were to each other and instead of inserting herself in the middle, she removed herself from the situation and wished them well. She could have helped Jesse but instead went to Alex. She protected the aliens, she protected Max, at her own expense. She wasn’t used. She always knew what the deal was between the two of them. She had the bravery to tell Max that, that would be the last favor she ever did for him because she knew it’s what would be best for her. I hope we see her back one day.

Michael - Michael has been through A LOT. Despite everything he’s been through, he might love more deeply than anyone else on this entire show. I also think that terrifies him. He closes himself off to accepting other people’s love because of his trauma and it’s realistic and valid. Despite what he says, Michael’s actions and behavior always speaks more to what he’s feeling. He says he doesn’t have family, but he loves Max and Isobel like they are. Michael will never have a relationship that works until he reaches the point where he accepts that other people can and do really, truly love him. It’s that age old “you can never really give love until you’re ready to receive it” thing and that’s so fucking relatable to me because I’m the exact same way.

Kyle - Kyle, like Jenna, they also could have made into a villain and they didn’t. He loves Liz, he supports Liz, even knowing she loves someone else. He didn’t try to insert himself into their whole thing or try to get back together with her. Instead he basically stepped up and asked what she needed from him. It took him on a journey that changed his life and his view of a parent he idolized. Even at the end when he was breaking down, he had every excuse to revert back to something ugly, but he still took the higher road. Kyle may have used to be a homophobic bully, but he’s the proof that we all look for when we ask if it’s really possible for a person to change. Kyle changed and I’m proud that he continues to surprise me.

Maria - Maria’s love for her mom is so beautiful. Watching someone you love slowly lose themselves is one of the MOST difficult things, and seeing them show just how much stress it really puts on her life was wonderful (even though it was difficult to watch). I loved the little insight we got regarding Maria’s feelings of growing up in a town where everyone was white and how it was her mother that taught her to love her skin and her voice. The scene with her and Liz sitting on the billboard was so important. I also love that we know Maria’s family is involved with the aliens in some way (we just don’t know how yet). Also, on a more shallow note, Heather Hemmens is crazy beautiful so I’m grateful to the show for introducing me to her.

Alex - I mean....I honestly don’t know what to say about Alex. At this point I feel like I could write a dissertation about him. Alex has affected me in ways that I was not expecting. I didn’t really understand him at first. I was intrigued, but it took me a while to really see him. To truly see him. Alex is smart. Ridiculously smart. Remember when I said that Liz solved about half the things on the show? Alex solved the other half. He’s kind. He’s so freaking kind, and loving, and loyal. He stands up for his friends and calls them out when need be. Seeing his relationship with Kyle this season has been a blessing. They may not be “friends” (yet) but he’s willing to not look at how they were shaped by the past to instead concentrate on the present because it’s what’s needed. He has this capacity for love that’s so deep which is all the more amazing given by the fact that the two people who should have loved him unconditionally didn’t. He was abandoned by his mom and left to be raised by an abusive, homophobic man. He had every reason to turn out hateful like his dad, but he didn’t. His trauma cost him so much of himself, but this season he’s started to regain those pieces that had been chipped away. He confronted his abuser, he stopped running away from the man he’s in love with. He wants to be free. Free to live and love the way he’s always wanted to. Alex has spent this season regaining his agency, and it’s easily been my favorite character arc.

Extras:

The fashion choices on this show (at least regarding the women) are A+. Maria’s outfits were my favorite. The song selections were also amazing. Nothing makes me happier than some quality 90’s music so it was basically a fantasy brought to life to have a show that showcased it every episode. I even loved all of the cover versions of popular songs. I also had this idea of “what if they end the season playing Here With Me?” and they did, so I’m glad that at least everyone agrees that it was the only song choice that made sense. The show had a lot of great one liners, especially from Michael, Alex, Kyle, and Isobel. I truly believe they’re the snarkiest characters and lord do I want to see more of that.

So those are my positive thoughts on Season 1. Will I watch Season 2 if it’s renewed? Yes. There are a lot of things I wish I could change, but the one thing that the show did (relatively) well is create a multitude of characters that were easy to love in different ways and I *want* to know what happens to them next. So, hopefully, we’ll all get to have our weekly freak out moments again next TV season. We’ll see. 🤷🏼‍♀️

The international touring market has kept many hip-hop veterans afloat in an industry that’s drawn toward the new, hot thing. But being overseas isn’t all roses. Some acts have complained about the language and cultural barriers that exist before and after the show, as well issues like simply trying to find a hefty post-show meal in countries with light portions and early restaurant closing times. While Ace celebrated the overseas touring scene, he also said, “I would love to do more tours in the States if the right people are putting it on.”

Since his 2012 statement, there have been hoards of promoters and entities putting on music festivals that allow veteran acts to corner both the international and domestic markets all year. The now-defunct Rock The Bells was one of the first major tours specifically for hip-hop acts that exist outside of the Billboard chart bubble, providing a steady check and chance at visibility for many of the aforementioned artists. Underground stalwarts Rhymesayers have held their Soundset festival in Minnesota since 2008, which gives the label’s acts an opportunity to be on the bill not just with fellow legends, but the hottest stars of the moment.

This year’s edition featured in-demand acts like Migos, Logic, and Tyler, The Creator alongside the Wu, Ice-T, and Hieroglyphics. Besides festivals like Soundset, there are few places where those legendary acts would be in a position to perform in front of Migos fans in 2018. And while there is an argument that there’s no benefit for Wu-Tang to perform for a crowd populated by Migos supporters, that’s a simplistic way of evaluating hip-hop fans. For instance, one of Waka Flocka Flames’ favorite rappers is Nas. Good music is good music, and modern festivals are teeming with opportunities for fans to be exposed to “new” music. Nowadays, new music isn’t about how long something’s been out, but whether someone has been exposed to it yet.

Festivals aren’t just opportunities for acts to make money off of their catalog, but to make new inroads in the game. After being split up for more than a decade, A Tribe Called Quest did comeback shows at Rock The Bells in 2008 and 2010, which helped reignite interest in the legendary group. Their Beats, Rhymes, And Life documentary focused on their preparation for the shows, and the renewed buzz didn’t just bolster streams and purchases of their canonic work, it led right into 2016’s We Got It from Here… Thank You 4 Your Service album — which went number one on the Billboard charts and sold over 100,000 copies in its first week. Those highly anticipated festival performances were the springboard for their resurgence and strong sales figures, making them one of the first acts in hip-hop who has had such a massive comeback.

A similar revival is possible for other veteran acts who properly utilize the festival scene for its networking opportunities. At festivals like Coachella and Grandoozy, there are dozens of newer acts, PR people, and media outlets that represent opportunities for legacy acts to expand their visibility. Logic just announced that he has a song with the Wu-Tang Clan on his YSIV album. There’s a chance the seed for the track could have been planted at Soundset, where they both performed.

Whether they caught up with each other backstage and/or the Wu were blown away by his set, they made a connection that’s vital to bridging hip-hop’s generational gap. With their appearance on YSIV, the Wu will be on an album sure to be streamed by kids who join YBN Almighty Jay in not knowing their contributions to hip-hop history. Some of them are sure to subsequently Enter The 36 Chambers and expand the breadth of The Clan’s teenage demographic.

The circumstance highlights the power of the festival scene to help legacy hip-hop acts not just bank off of their existing catalog but to expand their legacy into a new generation of hip-hop consumers. There’s talk of a festival bubble, based on miscues like Fyrefest and other less successful shows. But veteran hip-hop acts should be the main group hoping that bubble never bursts — because it’s what has allowed some of them to pop all over again.
