Friday Fic Recs!
Finally had a chance to get back to some reading this week, so here's my little list of recs!
Strength Like a Tower by @potatoobsessed999 An absolutely stunning moment of Finrod in the dungeons of his own tower, speaking to the stones themselves and drawing strength from them. The combination of grief and love in this is beautiful and I'm going to be going back to read this one on the regular.
Torn in Two by @dreamingthroughthenoise A lovely reflection of how Finrod and Celebrian would find shared grief and understanding in Valinor, both sundered from Middle-earth that they loved, both living with the scars (physical and/or emotional) of living post-captivity. Beautifully written.
This untitled piece by @actual-bill-potts An absolutely darling vignette of Finrod bringing gifts to Barahir, Emeldir, and Beren after Beren's birth. Wonderfully full of laughter, foreshadowing, and bittersweet joy.
Wanderlust, Chapter 16 by @cuarthol I need to catch up and read the rest of this too, but I got sucked into chapter 16 because of an excerpt posted this week and it was beautiful. Finrod reflecting on his brother and Andreth, meeting a tiny Barahir, gorgeous descriptions of Atani embroidery...this has it all.
A House Aflame by @daegred-winsterhand A collection of haikus regarding the House of Fëanor. Beautiful and heart-rending.

Having read your wonderful takes, I would like to know something. How would you write Elwing's reunion with M&M in Valinor? Or with Elrond (with the popular fanon of supposedly bringing M to the land)? I've read many takes/fics that tackle that and while I am in no way policing how people should write these characters, its a bit alarming the way Elwing is written so much as a hysterical bitch which is then used as a gotcha moment for feanorian apologists to say M&M were the rightful people to raised E&E because she is acting like that. Or have Elrond defend the oath against Elwing when she gives M&M grief for it. I feel like these all give great disservice to all of their characters but idk. I would like to know your own thoughts/headcanons about it.
Well I expect you know I love Elwing, so I'm going to lean towards a sympathetic take on her and a generally positive take on her relationship with her children, but I actually haven't considered much my own take on that reunion.
I feel like there are a lot of ways it could go.
A teary, big hugs "we missed each other so much" kind of thing scratches a particular itch for me and it really is a very lovely, sweet scene. It feels very cathartic considering how much was taken from them and how much time they might have had together that they lost.
A more awkward one where they are really glad to see each other but don't really know what to say also tracks for me. Elwing last saw Elrond when he was a little boy, and it would be reasonable that she's not sure how to treat him as an adult (in a sense, he's really a stranger to her now). Similarly, Elrond doesn't know his mother at all--the mom that you "know" as a little kid is usually a fair bit removed from the mom you know as an adult.
A delayed reunion also makes sense to me. One where Elwing holds back from seeking Elrond out, because she isn't sure if he wants to see her and/or trying to give him space for other reunions (such as with Celebrian) without having to deal with his mom as well; or where Elrond maybe has to gather himself a bit before seeking her out. There's a lot of feeling that's surely built up around their final days together so that would be a bit emotionally intimidating to tackle.
I could even take a slightly more standoffish reunion where Elrond, because Elwing is more myth and legend than mother to him at this point, isn't even sure what he wants from her, if anything, and it maybe takes some getting to know her before he realizes he wants her to be a part of his life again.
(Semi-related, I enjoy the idea of Elwing developing a relationship with Celebrian while they wait for Elrond to join them in Eldamar)
Even if you h/c Elrond with a very positive relationship with Maglor, it's clear through LotR that he very much still views Earendil and Elwing as his parents, which suggests to me there is still strong positive feeling there, even if their initial reunion also harbors some awkward or stilted feelings. And just for me, personally, I want that to be a positive and loving relationship because I think both Elwing and Elrond deserve that. They were robbed of having a relationship through most of Elrond's childhood and adolescence; they deserve to get to have a relationship with each other now.
As for any reunion between Elwing and the Feanorians I suppose my thought would be: There isn't one. I don't think Elwing would ever want to see any of them again for any reason, and my personal feelings for her are that she never forgives them.
Assuming Elrond was still fostering a relationship with Maglor, I don't think he would ever try to bring those two together unless Elwing proposed it, because he would be aware of how traumatizing it would be for her to see him again (having had to grow up with the guy himself). I absolutely cannot imagine Elrond defending the Feanorians to Elwing, except possibly to share some of the less terrible things they did while he was under their care. I don't think Elrond would find the oath justifiable, let alone try to defend it to other people. He can love Maglor and still think he was in the wrong.
I also honestly don't think Maglor would view himself as the "rightful" parent of Elrond, especially by the time he gets back to Valinor: I think he is well aware of what he stole from both of them and he would want Elrond to take the opportunity to finally have that relationship with Elwing (Maglor has his own mommy to repair relations with as well, after all).
Under the cut I'm putting some of my favorite "Elwing and Elrond reunion" fics!
The Myth Hanging Heavy Over You by stormfallen - 1.1k - Elrond asks about his mother, in 100-word drabbles.
Stained Glass by @polutrope - 400 - Elrond meets his mother.
Joy is a Bird, a Fragile Thing by estuarie - 1k - Elrond comes to Aman and meets someone who has been lost to him.
The One with All the Birds by clothono - 46.5k - Elwing and Nerdanel in Valinor in the Fourth Age; a story about children coming home.

I have read and enjoyed reading many fics with the plot “Elrond tracks down and refuses to leave Maglor behind when he sails to Valinor.”
I would happily read a dozen more, I am but a simple fan of angsty reunions and unexpected forgiveness that sets characters on a path of schmoopy healing through the power of love and family.
You know what I’ve never seen but would read the shit out of?
Galadriel tracks down Maglor and refuses to sail without him.
Why on earth would she do that? Who knows that’s why I’m interested!
She’s still full of pride and refuses to let one of her cousin’s out-stubborn her record-stay in Endor. If she’s going home, she’s gonna have been the last rebel Noldo on middle earth damnit. Of course this would be couched in language like “Our time on these shores is over, and even penance must have an end.” And sound very wise.
He’s still her cousin and she loves him despite everything. She thinks he’s suffered enough, maybe even regrets she did not interfere to stop his suffering earlier.
She love’s her son-in-law Elrond, and in light of losing her granddaughter to the choice of Luthien, and having been separated from her daughter all these years by the sea, she can’t stand to see a another perminent parting when she can prevent it. Maybe she was even friends with her aunt Nerdanel long ago and has been thinking about how Maglor may deserve what he has sentenced himself to, but those who love him don’t deserve to suffer with him.
She is finally forgiven and permitted to return to Valinor, but she’s still Galadriel, and if the Valar thought her return was going to be simple and predictable they forgot who they were dealing with. How better to stir the pot than bring the last Feanorian home?
She intended to just say goodbye and good riddance, and tie up a final loose end. But damnit, he’s so pathetic, she can’t build up the vitriol.
She feels like, having finally been forgiven, she should forgive in turn, having grown as a person. Boring, I know.
She never actually believed he was living like a hermit on the beach. Her cousin Makalaure? Sure, he was far from the worst of them, but he was as proud as any of his brothers, and perhaps the most fond of material comforts of them all, save maybe Caranthir. But he always was great at twisting a narrative to do what he wanted, and the penitent sinner wandering singing to the wind is just the sort of yarn he’d spin to cast himself in a sympathetic and romantic light before he disappeared to start over. Wait. He’s really here and half mad- half faded? That is the stupidest thing she’s ever heard, she refuses to let him stay like this.
Celebrian once told her offhand she wished she could have met the men that raised her husband and this is something she can give to her, after all the world has taken.
She doesn’t get to see Feanor’s face at finding out she gave three of her hairs to a dwarf, and telling Maglor is as close as she’s going to get to that satisfaction.
Without Maglor around, Finrod is considered the greatest bard of the Noldor, and she’s still pissed at him for dying in such a stupid way. So Maglor will be coming to Valinor to put him in his place whether he wants to or not.
She made a bet with Aredhel on the ice over which of the Feanorians would survive the longest, and she knows rumor and songs are not going to suffice for proof that she won.
Frodo asked her if it was true Maglor still wandered the shores, and if he would ever be permitted to come to Valinor to heal. And she refused to look like someone who keeps grudges for longer than his race has even existed in front of him.
He owes her money.

For the ship ask, Maedhros/Fingon? Or my favorite canon couple, Elrond/Celebrian.
You all are determined to make me say controversial things, aren't you!! For this ask meme.
Here is the thing... I'm just not really that invested in either of these ships. I'm not opposed to them, but I don't think I'm supportive enough of them to really say I ship either of them.
Maedhros/Fingon
Don’t Ship It
Why don’t you ship it?
Here is the thing about this one. I had been adjacent to Silm fandom on Tumblr before I actually read the book (again, in a very skim-y kind of way), and there is so much shipping of these two that I had expected it to basically smack me in the face. I'd expected Frodo/Sam levels of shippiness. And, while there are some echoes of Frodo/Sam in some of the things that happen between them, there was nowhere near that for me. I didn't really get attached to either of them as characters, and because I was skimming, it really was kind of blink-and-you-miss-it for me. So I think something about the dissonance between what I'd been expecting and what I actually saw in the text made me evaluate what I saw in the text with a much more critical eye than I would have if I'd just been presented with it on its own terms.
What would have made you like it?
I suppose I kind of answered this one above, but I think I would have liked it more if I hadn't been going in with such inflated expectations. But definitely more of them in the text, more of the characters actually interacting with one another, more opportunity to see evidence of a relationship between the grand gestures.
Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?
The echoes of Frodo/Sam, Beren/Luthien - again, I absolutely see why people ship it! The grand gestures are certainly grand!
Elrond/Celebrian
Don’t Ship It
Why don’t you ship it?
I mean, I just - don't think I know anything about it. I know that Elrond saw Celebrian and loved her. I know they have three children together. I know Celebrian was eventually tormented and had to sail to Valinor. There may be more to know, but if so, I haven't read the texts in which that more takes place. So, while I am not opposed to their relationship, I just don't feel like I've seen enough of it to ship it!
What would have made you like it?
Seeing more of them! Not that that is a requirement for anyone to ship something, but for me in this particular case I haven't seen enough in the text to make me invested. (There are other ships that I do ship despite not seeing much in the text, though, so this is not at all an across-the-board opinion. Everything is subjective.)
Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?
I mean, I've scrolled past some lovely art and fic and I'm sure there is a thriving fan community out there, and I'm glad of that! And as I've said before, I'm an elf monogamy fan, so I believe that they were very much in love and had a wonderful relationship. I'm just not especially invested in following that relationship.
I hope I haven't driven you away entirely, anon! I respect your ships even if I am not invested in them myself!
