dunno if you've answered an ask similar to this or not, but what's the best place to start as an amateur comic maker?
Tumblr media
lol as an amateur comic maker take my advice with a grain of salt😅
here's a post I did at one point about art tips?
here's a post about my process personally
comics are super broad and there's not really a wrong way to start I don't think. id say
Look at what you like. Can be comics and it can be other media too: a lot of my inspiration is webtoons, youtube video essays, interviews with dnd actual play ppl, disney animation... ABSORB the things you're interested in and morph it into a brain soup and barf it back out lol. A lot of seeing new content for me is also just discovering what's possible. I read The Lies Of Locke Lamora and was like. WTF NOVELS CAN BE FUNNY??? Look at advice on how ppl make that type of content, try to examine why you like it, and adopt the parts you want
Don't get caught up on the things you don't want to do/have no interest in. Comics don't HAVE to be a certain way, if you're like me and don't wanna spend forever rendering an image you can draw characters that take 10sec 😂if you have only an aesthetic in mind and no story, draw smth that evokes that for you even if it takes hours to paint a horrifying guts monster.
Draw whatever tf you want and have fun. It might take you a while to figure out how you want to draw comics for it to be fun— I didn't land on this style I'm using until like, legit 4 months ago and I've been drawing for years so 👍don't be afraid to change it up whenever you feel like it
Edit: OH YEAH this is more of a side note lol don't get too disappointed if through finding what you like to do it turns out comics isn't it. I went to school for animation and I still love movement, it looks super pretty to me. But I don't have the patience most of the time, I just want to slap a story down lol

Detective Noir AU
Alright, this au has been sitting around, waiting for me to finish it but chances are, I never will :((
So instead, I'll just post what I have so far
This was inspired by that one comment on the au post the author made(at this point you could consider me a stalker for the amount of hours I've scrolled through her feed💀)
Tumblr media
First things first, none other than our main character himself, Detective Hollow!
I made him the detective in this one mainly because I was basing it off of the theory that if there was no heroine the keyholder would simply become the hero instead(don't remember where I read this but I'm guessing it was the webtoon comment section).
I also my have just really wanted to draw him in an overcoat
gonna be honest, I did little to no research going into this AU, the thing I most tried to learn about was the femme fatale so I could get a good view on how to design Buddy
Speaking of the femme fatale:
Tumblr media
Seems like someone got caught in the spotlight!
And before you ask, yes, those are pants. Weird ones, but pants nonetheless. I swear, I hate lighting when it's from the front. Frontal lighting can go fuck itself. Please ignore the little help lines I put in
Honestly, Buddy's outfit was probably the hardest part of this one. I wanted him to look slutty, but I didn't want to make it TOO slutty, but I feel like I may have added WAYY too many folds in his pantsuit and I kinda messed up on the overcoat lol. The diamond on his chest was inspired by the diamond on the villainess key more than anything and I tried to incorporate that into his gloves too.
Anyway, have some potential outfit sketches I made:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the two I thought might come off as too slutty and
Tumblr media
the ultimate winner of the outfit ideas
As you can see the diamond chest window and fur coat were a mut in this outfit and I'm pretty happy with the end result
Y'all know how the femme fatale usually has to seduce the main character a.k.a. the detective?
Well, y'all know me so have an extra just for you <33
Tumblr media
But I'm not done just yet!
Remember how I said that I made Chase the hero because of the lack of a heroine in the story? Well...
Tumblr media
I did some more surface level research(and I mean very surface level) and decided to adapt the trope of the girl-next-door archetype for him!!
Don't think it suits him, since they usually just sit pretty and wait for the detective to notice them, but they do have badass roles once in a while and I live for those!!!
The one Chase has taken on doesn't though sadly :')
I decided to go with Charlie Hollow for this one because it sounded more like something the timid and 'pure'(yuck I know, but sadly film noir movies often prop up comparisons between the femme fatale and the girl-next-door, this being one of them) girl next door would have
Overall I tried to make this one as cutesy as possible because, why not lol
Lastly(I apologise, I made this in a rush because I was running out of motivation)
Tumblr media
The distance between Buddy and the detective sure did close QUICK-
Originally I was planning on adding Deacon as a police officer and now that I think about it I could technically fit Prunella in here as well, but I just don't have any willpower left to keep this thing alive
My art blocks been acting up recently and I can't even pick up the pencil without immediately wanting to put it down :((
I wish I could have continued this and maybe I will someday, but until then this'll just stay in my drafts

Hi Maf!
After climbing out of the bg3brainrot hole and subbing to your Patreon for...reasons... I started reading your OC web comics. They are beautifully inspired and honestly have been giving me that drawing itch I need. I'm really looking forward to more chapters in ThUG and am currently reading through Stray Souls now.
Outta curiosity, how do you pronounce "Jeoan"? I've recently been on a linguistics kick and am curious if I got the pronunciation right.
Thank you so much! Happy you've been enjoying my comics 💕
Jeoan is basically just pronounced as "Joan". It's a very old name and I regret not having changed it for the webtoon launch but alas. Extra "e"s in names will never not haunt me

GUESS WHO? IT’S WEBTOON!!!!
Tumblr media
Here's a quick little bio for you:
She/Her Pronouns
Obsessed with Drama (default skin)
Verified Sword Lesbian™️
Wields a one-handed cliché anime sword using the upper body strength of a Mary Sue
Has terrible taste in everything (movies, character design, advertising methods, friends)
Enjoys Amino's presence (disrupts a canon event)
Exchanges cryptocurrency with Amino on a regular basis
Creative, artsy, and colorful
Jumps to conclusions easily
Not immune to propaganda (will believe ANYTHING)
Easily susceptible to clickbait
Overconfident gambler and gold-digger
Optimistic Derse Dreamer
Unhealthily invested in the romance lives of other people (and fictional people)
Constantly forgets to renew her Spotify subscription
Doesn't know what an adblocker is
Forgets to use trigger warnings sometimes
Probably has an ongoing feud with TappyToon
"How can you read this? There's no pictures!"
Her genre changes depending on her mood and the topic of discussion
Her skirt and bow change with her genre
The bell on her zipper rings whenever her genre changes
Tumblr media
I will make a separate post of all her genres for easier access later and put the link [here].
Funky little rant under the cut as well as a single progress-shot at the bottom
I've been working on this character for a few months now and I'm happy with how she turned out. It was a lengthy process of trying to make her look the way I wanted her to and part of that was changing aspects of her design and allowing my friends to help and support me. At one point one of my friends told me the drawing was too stiff and ordered me to doodle ugly things until I felt confident enough to break out of my comfort zone, and that really helped Webtoon feel more personalized I think
To be honest, Socialstuck has pulled me out of my artist's block. For the longest time I had no motivation to draw anything at all because I wasn't confident enough in my abilities and art style to even try. I'm still not good at drawing poses, and even now this drawing is an imitation of Cloutchase's art style. However, the simplicity of that art style inspired me to draw, and suddenly I found myself creating more and more drafts. Whether those drafts will ever be completed is up to the future, but it's a big step for me to finally try again
This piece may be in Cloutchase's art style, but it's also got a little bit of me in it as well, and I'm more than happy to contribute to a fun community of people making stuff together by adding my own OC into the mix
Funny addition: At the bottom of my Webtoon notes is a small section of past-me complaining about how hard it was to draw with my dog staring at me. I got peer-pressured by my dog XD
Anyway here's the progress shot and also Webtoon's beta-design I made with a picrew (I beta all my character designs in picrew lol)
Tumblr media
And here’s a vertical draft of her final design in HD as a treat:

It's here!!! My entry for this year's @kaishinbigbang! I am having so, so much fun with this event, and having a partner like @miyuzaki-1 with me on this journey is like 98% of the reason why. Thank you so much for being an amazing partner 💕💕 Look forward to the fic she writes, it's really awesome!
A couple extra arts and a bit of ramble under the cut! (also spoiler ahead for the story 😆)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Man, the difference in tone between these two pieces is actually hilarious hghahah
Ksbb22 is literally my first time doing a collaboration project, so I was really nervous when we first started. But Miyu was really nice and I'm glad I decided to join! It's so cool to see her transforming my random prompt into something wayyy exceeding my expectation. Also teaming up with her made me learn so much new things because I wanted to give her story proper justice 😆
I've been wanting to draw a comic since forever, so I'm really happy I finally able to do just that. I've been reading so much ORV these past few months tho so I ended up making it in webtoon style 😆 Full disclosure, those Pandora's speech bubble are heavily inspired by latest chapter of ORV!
Anyway, I ended up with a couple sketches that I unfortunately haven't had the time to make, but maybe I'll finish these someday because Miyu's story deserved more appreciation 😆

Hi, Chai! I've been following you for a bit, mostly for the RG content, and I've recently seen you talk about your other non-RWBY interests when I realized that I'm really curious on what other media do you like? (Be it shows, movies, music, games, books, etc.)
Oughh this is a very good question. I'll put them under a read more cause I have a feeling I took this question too literally and it might get just a little bit long because of that. 💦
I'm generally very passive with the media I consume and only draw as much RWBY as I do because RG has had me in a vice grip since V8E1 and isn't letting go anytime soon. 💀 But I do engage with lots of other stuff too! This isn't an exhaustive list, just ones I like lots or re-watch often enough.
Anime
I probably watch this stuff more than anything else. My favourite of all time is probably The Eccentric Family, both seasons. The art direction and the messages of the story just hit very hard for me and I re-watch it pretty much every year. My second favourite is Kekkai Sensen (i prefer the first over second season as they switch directors).
As for others enjoy:
Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood
Silver Spoon
Yona of the Dawn
Snow White with the Red Hair
Kyousogiga (recommend if you liked Kekkai Sensen)
A Lull in the Sea
Chaika the Coffin Princess [Now why does that name sound so familiar 🤔]
Anohana
Been really enjoying this season's shows and am looking forward to the Winter 2024 lineup (Dungeon Meshi and Yubisaki to Renren at the same time!!)
Shows
Dragon Prince
The Owl House
Good Omens
Games
Nier (2010),
Transistor
Pyre
Zelda Series (Ocarina of Time & Spirit Tracks are my favourites)
Nier: Automata
Honorary mentions to Grand Chase (an old MMO i used to be obsessed with), Avalon Code (a niche DS game that I really liked), Fire Emblem Awakening (a classic) and Animal Crossing (that I played like it was my day job in 2020).
Movies
Can only think of two live actions and the rest are animated/anime 😭
Stardust
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Howl's Moving Castle
HTTYD (1 & 2)
Kubo and the Two Strings
The Wind Rises
From Up on Poppy Hill
Penguin Highway
Books
I don't read as much as I did when I was a kid, but my top three are probably Runemarks, Howl's Moving Castle, and Stardust (I like the last two a lot because I liked their movies).
Webcomics
Used to be really into these and wanted to write my own before Webtoon kinda... gentrified the entire industry. But hey, I can still talk about some of my favourites!
Shaderunners (queer heist in a roaring 20sish setting)
Witchy (queer south East Asian inspired fantasy adventure)
Kochab (sapphic story between a skier that gets lost and meets a fire spirit I think? It's final updates are going up this month!)
Lady of the Shard (all time favourite. queer polyam lovestory between a goddess and her acolyte. Complete. I reread it every year, I love it so much. The rest of the authors work is also great, you might know them from Cucumber Quest).
Then lastly...
Music
I mostly listen to indie/folk more than anything else, with a bit of jazz/R&B thrown in for flavour. Favourite artists are probably:
San Fermin
Flock of Dimes/Wye Oak
Of Monsters & Men
Maggie Rogers
Florence & the Machine
Paper Kites
Matthew and the Atlas
Halsey
This list obviously isn't exhaustive because I have the memory of a goldfish but those are the highlights that came to mind at least.
Sorry for the long list, but thank you for the question!! It was fun to put all these in one place.

saw your testimony of your experience being hounded for having a “similar style” to viv on another blog. ty so much for sharing your history there.
i was wondering if you’d be willing to talk about or list what cartoons/movies/comics/art influenced or inspired you/your style.
i’ve long been sick of people lumping other styles in with viv’s as if she’s the first to ever draw like that (as well as viv acting like she is.) and one day when i have the time i’d like to sit down and make an info-graphic of sorts explaining style influence and how it can overlap with other artists even with them never crossing paths.
if you’d rather not engage this tho i completely respect that. and feel free to shoot me a private message if you’d rather not post this ask to your account.
whether or not i hear from ya i hope you have a good one and ty for reading.
That's fine!! I don't mind engaging when people ask my side of things, I just don't want to be a source for other people to post random things through, if that makes sense. I do try to be upfront about my experience and bring it up from time to time because there are constantly new victims, and I don't want anyone to feel alone or like they're the only person having a negative experience. I know that a lot of others are afraid to speak out, so I try to be a story that's open in case anyone else needs validation.
As for stylistic influence, The Nightmare Before Christmas was the earliest movie I remember watching and my grandma had to get it on VHS for me because I watched it like every week. I loved Tim Burton's claymation as well as his live action movies (Beetlejuice, Mars Attacks, Batman, etc.) My favourite American cartoons growing up were Batman the Animated Series (very big stylistic influence), The Grim Adventures, and Animaniacs. I grew up abroad, though, so I had a lot of other influences, Winx Club was extremely popular as well as Sailor Moon, so I picked up a lot of habits in my anatomy from those (I think automatically associating ice with villains is also something I picked up from that). But the very long legs compared to bodies is definitely a prevalent thing in media I liked, I even had these dolls (they were called Hi Glamm dolls if you want to look them up) who had legs twice the length of the rest of their bodies. Don Bluth movies were some of my favourites, especially All Dogs and Anastasia. I read a lot of comics my dad collected as well, in big whole-volume collections, and I remember being very fond of Asterix and Obelix, and Bill Maildin's comics about the military (which might not seem like a big one, but I took a lot of inspiration from his spot-blacking for when I do spot-black).
Other major influences concerned, some of my biggest when it came to making comics were other webcomics, specifically Warrior-U (Aisha Thani) and Lackadaisy (Tracy Butler), both of which have been around on the internet far longer than a certain someone who thinks she invented half the things in these comics. I did see her webcomic and followed webcomics from the circle of comics it was lumped in with (Our Personal Purgatory and Alice and the Nightmare, the latter of which is still ongoing and the former you can see the artist's new comic on Webtoons, it's called Death Sitter). Ironically, a friend linked me to her comic and said "it reminds me of your art so I think you'd like it". I wanted to like it, but she was so overly defensive of her "style" that people were "stealing" and so aggressive toward other issues that it pushed me away from it. She definitely didn't invent the very fluid, cartoony bodies thing with big eyes that everyone equates to her, that came long before with Aisha Thani and Puppetology. From what I've seen, Viv used to have a way more Disney-esque style until she became associated with Puppetology and Dollcreep, so if anyone deserves credit for "inventing" the "style", it's them.
Tumblr media
I'm genuinely sad that Warrior-U is still gone, but I need to buy her other comics because her art is amazing. Funnily enough, recollecting this all is what prompted me to go look up her gumroad, and see that there are even more new comics to check out.
I don't mind posting this publicly, I'm very proud of my artistic journey and I'm incredibly happy to share due credit to all of my influences growing up. I'm trying not to make this too long, so hopefully this clears up enough, but if you have follow-up questions then feel free to ask.

I've been following My Brother's (Not So) Secret Boyfriend for a while but I just read Something Borrowed, Something New and LOVED it. Heartwarming stories about parenting always, always hit for me and everything about it was so touching.
I wanted to ask if you had any inspirations for the plot, and if you have any recommendations for webcomics with similar themes (whether on webtoon or not).
Love your art! <3
Ohh, thank you so much!! It always makes me really happy when folks happen to find that little comic, it was a lot of fun to make 😊 I'm so glad you enjoyed it!!
Honestly, the biggest source of inspiration was the characters themselves, because SBSN is technically an AU for a set of OCs that have lived in my brain since I was in high school :') so a lot of it is a result of me constantly remixing their relationships and circumstances in my head, because I love creating "What If" scenarios for my characters ahaha. Aside from that, though, I like going into stories with a certain type of dynamic I want to explore! In this case, it was the idea that different people can end up with different relationships to their parents/families despite sharing similar experiences to one another, plus the question of how to draw the line of your own personal boundaries in the face of knowing your actions affect more people beyond just yourself. From there, it was a matter of taking those old comfort OCs and having fun!
Hmmmmm, as for recommendations—Lemon Soda & Coffee is a very sweet (completed!) Webtoon that I think is probably the closest series I've come across in having a similarly themed plot to SBSN. Yotsuba&! is also an excellent comedy manga featuring a very charming father-daughter duo! I wouldn't necessarily call it similar to SBSN, but I also adore SpyxFamily, in particular for its development of Loid and Yor's parenting skills for Anya 😂 Oh, and Plus One recently made its debut as a Webtoons Original! It's almost all baby fluff, so if nothing else I feel like it can fill in the gaps in SBSN that I quietly skipped over when it comes to the actual getting-ready-to-raise-a-baby bits in real life ahahaha Thanks again!!! 💕

favorite book. It's so hard to pick though! I'd say maybe the Rat trilogy by Haruki Murakami
last show. I honestly don't remember. I think it was the short series Choco Milk Shake. Idk what I'm gonna watch next, there are so many I still have to catch up on like WWDITS, My Beautiful Man, Our Flag Mean Death, Good Omens, Yellowjackets, Alice in Borderland, and now Sweet Home season 2.
sources of inspiration. I draw inspiration and ideas from various sources, be it movies, tv series, books, webtoons, video games, music, what have you.
story behind url. It's taken from the bridge of Enhypen's Given-Taken. Most of you all probably probably already know, but I just love vampires and everything magical and supernatural and wonderful and terrifying. And it just made sense with the majority of the muses that I have for the url to be this.
recent read. I moved this here for last so you can skip reading me ramble if you want. (I tell you, it's long, don't say I didn't warn you)
There have been so many things I've read in the past few months for my classic literature discipline in uni, mainly classic Greek literature and theatre, we've only recently dived in early roman literature and works from the Western European Middle Ages, our professor is kicking our asses off, but honestly these are one of my favourite classes out of the whole semester. But anyway, I actually just now finished reading The Romance of Tristan and Iseult by Joseph Bedier. Not bad, I must say. It has never been really my cup of tea to read romance stories, but at least it was much more interesting to read that than to read The Golden Ass (that one wasn't bad either, if we overlook some parts of it, yeah, I admit, but it was so unnecessary long in my opinion, I was literally falling asleep while reading it). If I had to pick which of the works I've read so far is my favourite, I'd have to say I really liked the tragedy Medea by Euripides (our professor once told us a story how she watched it being played out for the only time at the theatre in the city that we call our cultural center and how suddenly it started to rain and there was a thunder during the monologue of Medea and how it felt like nature was out there for the heroine and as if it was listening to her and answering her word, and the actress just kept playing her role in the water and when she was done, the rain suddenly stopped as if on cue and the sky was suddenly as clear as day again, and damn, I wish I was there to see it myself, I don't even care if I got drenched, I got chills just listening to that story. That was basically a once in a lifetime experience. But ANYWAY! The story itself is great, I really loved it.) and I also liked the comedy Frogs by Aristophanes, despite the message that the author was trying to convey at that time period.
As for my free time, I'm still reading The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams and I'm pretty close to finishing the second book from the whole series (The Restaurant at The End of The Universe), probably in a week or two I'll start the third book Life, the Universe and Everything. And I really love it so far. There so many funny and straight up absurd moment in the story and I love the group of main characters in it. My heart goes out to the robot Marvin, idk if I will see you again in the following books, Marvin, but you're a big mood, I feel you.
As for my annual update on Webtoons I am reading! Right now I'm reading Everything Is Fine, Homesick, Never-Ending Darling, Omniscient Reader, My S-Class Hunter, ZOMGAN, There Are No Demons (the art style for this series is very uncanny valley but in a cool way, I love it), Nocturne, The Guy Upstairs, Lore Olympus and Zombie X Slasher (and interesting way to take the zombie genre and create a story, I must say, I don't think I've seen anyone do this before, I look forward to what the author can offer). And I recently finished Surivival Diary, Dark Moon: The Blood Altar, The Star Seekers, Crimson Heart and soon I'll be finishing Dark Moon: The Grey City Too.
And a webtoon I recently finished too was Survival Romance and I just gotta give a shoutout to it. That webtoon took me completely by surprise. It wasn't the cute art style that made it unique, there are many stories that look cute on the outside that hide something dark and sinister underneath (like Everything Is Fine, for example). I knew this webtoon is horror, so at first I expected maybe one of the characters would be a yandere or something like that and the MC would be trying to escape that. And yes, there is one side character that could be considered obsessive in a way in parts of the webtoon, but the story wasn't about that at all. The author just took the romance and horror genres and turned them on their heads. The whole story isn't all that much about romance at all, actually, it's about forming friendships and bonds with people and having the will to keep pushing forward despite all the struggles you might be going through. The plot twists were SO GOOD, even though some could have been quite easy to predict. I also loved that the author put some meta and breaking the forth wall moments (Doki Doki Literature Club style is the closest association I could think of for this webtoon, kind of) and by the end all the characters [REDACTED, NO SPOILERS, GO READ IT YOURSELF IF YOU'RE CURIOUS]. The message is also very nice, the closing words in the epilogue honestly hit quite close to home and made me bawl my eyes out. The story also has zombies in a quite a unique way in my opinion. So if like dark stories with twists and turns and a meaningful message, and if in any way I piqued you're interest, go and check it out. I'm sure you won't be left disappointed. I could honestly write way more about this webtoon, but I already wrote a lot, so I'm gonna stop here.

Meet the Creators - RiverLethe
What username(s) and platform(s) can folx find you on? (Please include links!)
@riverlethe - I am on Tumblr and Ao3!
(Fun Fact) What is your favorite kind of potato?
Yes. If it is a potato, I will eat it (except for mayo-based potato salads - no thanks), and my preference absolutely depends on mood, but if I had to pick one.... Have you ever tried Chef John's Potatoes Romanoff? If the answer is no, go fix that right now! (add in crisped up pancetta before baking - you're welcome)
How long have you been creating works in fandom spaces? How long have you been active in the SM fandom?
If reading fanfic counts as being active in the fandom, I've been active, on and off, for a little over 20 years, but I didn't actually start writing fanfic until 2 years ago.
What type(s) of creative works do you usually make? (fanfics, digital art, cosplay)
Fanfics are my #1 contribution, but I also crochet. I made @linlamont's Sailor Rex plush based on her amazing artwork for her adorable story "Treasures", and I am currently working on a custom Sailor Rex for my 6 yo daughter. There are plans for a Tuxedo Rex and Tuxedo Kamen
What do you enjoy about creating for the SM fandom?
I love the sense of community and making friends within the fandom. Discussing and theorizing all things Sailor Moon is one of my favorite things! Plus, there is just so much to explore, both in canon and fanon
Are you strictly UsaMamo or do you create for other pairings as well?
I wrote a Kunz/Venus fic for Heavenly Pearl's/@kaleidodreams' first ever Rare Pair week, but I otherwise exclusively write for UsaMamo. Who knows, maybe I'll be inspired to create for another ship in the future. Never say never!
What inspires you to create works for Usagi and Mamoru?
The emotions! Everything these kids go through is dark, scary, intense, etc etc, and I love to explore how it affected them, how they're feeling in the moment, and how Usagi and Mamoru support each other through it.
Do you tend to work on multiple projects (WIPs) simultaneously or try to finish one at a time?
Ideally, I would work on one WIP at a time, but with my ongoing story Once More, with Feeling!, I always have multiple going on. While I normally don't mind putting OMwF aside for a OS or two, I haven't updated it in almost a year, which I feel really bad about, so I am trying to put any new ideas on hold right now so I can get Chapter 13 done. OMwF will eventually update, I promise!
Do you prefer large projects (chaptered fics, webtoons/zines, highly detailed art) or small projects (one-shots or simple art)?
I love how much of a story can be explored and fleshed out in a chaptered fic, but, for fans, they can be daunting to start reading if you aren't there from the very beginning (depending on length), and there is always that ever present nemesis: time. As a writer, I like the regular engagement with the community that posting new chapters allows, but writing as I go can be very stressful, especially when motivation just isn't striking. For OSs, I love that ability to focus on one small part of the characters' lives without needing to generate a lot of backstory or lore. Will I do another Chaptered fic once OMwF is finished? Probably, I do want to continue into R, but I will hopefully take everything I've learned working on OMwF (it's my very first ever fanfic!) into the sequel so I'm a little more prepared.
Are there any common themes, situations, tropes, or mediums in your work?
Angst and Romance are probably the most common as I love the emotional impact the angst imparts and how Usagi and Mamoru support each other through it. Honestly, I find the original anime (and the manga to a lesser extent) a bit emotionally stunted, so I absolutely love fics that elicit emotions, in me, either happy, sad or anything in between!, and I strive to do that for my readers. With any luck, I succeeded!
Is there anything you haven’t explored artistically and would like to try?
If I could draw, I would totally do art. I am in awe of what artists can create through their medium and would love to be able to visually see what so many of us use words to describe, but, alas, I'll stick to crocheted dinosaurs with odangos! Regarding writing, I have more OSs in mind for stories and ideas I haven't explored yet, and maybe I'll actually learn some restraint and create chaptered fics that aren't 12+ chapters long at 5k-12k words each. Anything is possible! (Except for me and art. Not gonna happen)

Hi!! How's it going? I really love your comics and fanfics, and since you're really good at that.... Could you give me some advice to start writing my own comic? I have a lot of ideas and I want to start writing now but.... I don't know how to start with the story because of my selfdoubt... I want it to call the public's attention right away but I don't wanna start with the important stuff right now... you know?
Hi I'm doing okay!
I didn't expect to get asked this so I'm sorry if my advice doesn't seem cohesive.
Well, for me, I've been drawing for a long time and I even made comics when I was a kid. I recently made it my own personal goal to become a full time comic artist in the coming future (I'm only 19 so I have a long way to go).
One of the things to start with is first learning how to write and create stories, whether that's for yourself or your friends or whoever you're comfortable receiving advice or critique from. I started out writing fics on wattpad and over the years learned how to write better original stories and eventually become comfortable to let my friends read them. I'm not particularly good with writing advice but there are a lot of resources out there to help regarding writing a story.
Now for comics, I think it requires a lot of patience and thought, especially if it's being posted online. I'd recommend looking at webcomic series (if that's what you want to do) or find a physical graphic novel series that you enjoy and take inspiration from them and break down what made you like the comic. It took me a little while to eventually start a comic-- specifically a webtoon-- which I posted on Webtoons during 2021-2022. It's a little nerve-wracking to start but if you never try, then you won't ever start...
I think it's good to start small and simple, whether it's a black or white comic or a silly 4-panel gag comic; so that you can understand how to layout a comic and develop a work flow. Write outlines and scripts for your comic if there's a overarching narrative!!
I've done fully rendered comics before and while it's rewarding to see the finished product, they are very draining (especially if you have deadlines alongside a busy schedule). Example here:
Tumblr media
This took 12+ hours... I still see stuff wrong with it today haha
I don't regret it obviously, because I know I'm a perfectionist and I like my stuff looking nice, however it can really take a toll after a while. So if you're going to fully render everything, try to keep it simple/presentable.
Comics really do take time, along with gaining an audience, which is a whole other can of worms. You just need to put yourself out there, post things you enjoy and what other people might enjoy. My current fixation is FNAF right now, so most of my content right now is catering to it, and people will flock to it more than my original stuff. Once you start posting original content, it solely depends on if the viewers want to consume your original stuff (and it's okay if they choose not to!). It all takes time.
Now for the self-doubt, I can definitely relate to and I understand that completely. I have a good case of imposter syndrome when it comes to most of the things I create. There were countless times when working on my comics I had the repeating thought of: "Is this something I really want to do?" "Am I good enough for this?" "Why am I trying it looks awful..." etcetera etcetera!
This was when I was doing webtoons. It's very easy to fall into that self doubt/insecurity, especially when you see other artists who's art styles/writing are prone to comparison with your own work. That's something I'm still working on myself, I'm still young y'know, the self doubt comes and goes, but I think one way to combat that is to take a step back whenever you think of something negative, try and figure out why you feel that way, if there's something you can do about it, and work from there. Look at some old drawings or read old stories you've written and reflect on how far you've come and realize you're still growing and there's going to be growing pains when it comes to working on projects. It's so easy to compare yourself and to think you're inadequate but if you focus on bettering yourself and doing what you think what's best for you then you don't need to worry about what other people are doing.
Personally something I do to keep myself focused on my work (and not spiral) is listen to podcasts, music, or video essays (if you can listen to someone's lets play, that works too, but it can be distracting sometimes). Having some background noise can definitely help you stay focused and not let your thoughts get so distracting. Take breaks obviously, take naps, do what you need to.
I have some videos that I watched when I was looking into starting a comic/webtoon along with some writing tips here:
I'm sorry if this was very long winded, I hope I covered most of it, I just needed to get some points across. I hope this helps you, and good luck on your story!

I absolutely love DH. The plot is interesting and new, and the relationships are adorable and attention capturing. But mostly I love the art style, and it’s a big inspiration for me. Very rarely do you add backgrounds, but it doesn’t negatively affect your work and I love seeing it. I also don’t like drawing backgrounds, so seeing you make a whole webtoon with no backgrounds, and seeing it be amazing and so loved by fans is super cool. And on the occasions where you do add backgrounds, they always have a point to make or something to add, and they look amazing. Thank you for making DH!! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you! ❤️ I'm honored to be a source of inspiration.
The best thing with art and with its thousands and thousands of different styles & method is that there's no single way of doing art - comics included. While I didn't read (for some reason) Homestuck more than 9 months or so during the time when the Ancestors arc was just recently completed, what I loved was Homestuck's approach to comics as a medium. There were animations, full animated scenes, games, music, a weird way of reading the story through conversations the characters had online with each other etc. No one method, which was refreshing :3
You definitely can make a comic without backgrounds. Finnish comic Viivi ja Wagner rarely uses backgrounds and if you look at Calvin and Hoppes, or Garfield, you see this same with them, too.
Tumblr media
Legendary Frank Miller and his Sin City also uses backgrounds rarely and is very bold in drawing them as simple shapes only. Usually his pages are just blank black in Sin City.
Tumblr media
I've been drawing comics without backgrounds for 5 years or so, so you definitely can do it :D

gosh i wanna ask you every question lol. how about 5 28 + 29?
5- answered already :D
28. Any art events you have participated in the past (like zines)
I have done so many zines it'd be tedious to list em all! My current opinion of zines is that you gotta be REAL careful either as a participant or a customer bc SOME REAL SHADY STUFF HAPPENS! Speaking of which, I'm currently trying to salvage haikyuu flowers zine from the shit hole it fell into over the last year and a half. i'm in hell
Aside from zines, I've attempted inktober pretty much every year (a lot of u probably know me from outfitober 2021!), and I do Hourly Comic Day but it's for my friends' eyes only usually. I've been meaning to do swordtember this year but hoo boy i'm unprepared and unmoisturized we'll see we'll see
29. Media you love, but doesn't inspire you artistically
Oh, almost everything I watch/read nowadays! I feel like I decide to engage in a piece of media either because it's something I want to study for its artistry from the getgo, OR something I want to consume as a consumer, tho not opposed to having some of its elements trickle down into my mind as "inspiration" later on, but not directly
Here's a list of stuff I like and will probably not get into drawing fanart for or mull over my mind in a "studying" capacity, but makes me think nonetheless:
Suits (netflix show about lawyers, it's presented like a series of tense conversations where a cast of asshole lawyers yell at each other in their offices then storm out, over and over again, ad nauseum, i love it)
Funny shows - Silicon Valley, American Vandal, Middleditch and Schwartz, whatever James Acaster has ever spoken in any form at all (they're FUNNY)
Mistborn (book series by brandon sanderson. visually everything is grey/black and i will never draw it but it rocks)
Show Me The Money (korean hip hop survival show. insane and stupid. what more could you want)
Our Flag Means Death (banger. i'm not gay enough to draw OFMD fanart and do it justice)
Dimension 20, Game Changer, Noise Boys (I'm a BLM stan)
3 body problem (love 2 shill it 24/7, but i don't like drawing rockets and black holes)
Omniscient Readers Viewpoint (webnovel. I haven't read the webtoon. I do want to draw MC one day only because the webtoon and fanart usually makes him look handsome which conflicts with my favourite thing about him: that he is canonically really ugly)
Most songs I listen to (I'm not really directly inspired by music! I like to jam out and enjoy listening to it, but I'm generally immune to its mood/thought-altering properties)*
*except Must Have Been The Wind by Alec Benjamin, I still cry every time i hear it and ive never experienced this with any other song i don't know why

So what are your thoughts, tastes and feelings on manga or anime-inspired webcomics? They're everywhere on the internet and so many range in quality and execution.
I like it more when the manga inspiration is more subtle, like Gene Catlow is inspired by Osamu Tezuka's works but you don't see it because it's blended in with Albert's other inspirations.
I'm mainly gonna talk manga because most people will take more inspiration from that than anime, unless they're inspired by Mangaless Animes. One of my main pet peeves with manga-inspired webcomics, besides the botched westerner attempt at imitating the japanese art style that looks like something out of "How to draw manga" book, is the attempt to replicate from right to left reading style, first of all, the reason manga is like that is because of CULTURE. Like japanese read text from right to left, so it makes sense to have comics be that way too, here in the West, the only way it's justified if your webcomic has a huge japanese audience or you're also from Japan, otherwise it's a terrible idea. Unrelated but I've also heard that the japanese despise the Tapas/WEBTOON toilet paper format but those are only rumors.
Another pet peeve of mine is, you guessed it, chibi faces. Seriously it's 2023, chibi faces are not funny anymore. If you want to draw simpler, just make a simpler artstyle. And "wacky faces" aren't necessary anymore either, just focus on exaggerated expressions that don't go out of their way to be modern Spongebob.
In terms of story, we've all seen the Shonen influences creep their way into webcomics for as long as manga has been popular in the western world.
While I'm also here, the webcomics that try to deconstruct manga tropes and what have you are also bad. It's a racist mindset of "oh you poor japanes, you don't know how PROBLEMATIC your works are, let me, a westerner used to western standards, educate you because I am SOOOOOO good person"
