Interesting that Paige frequently refers to Walter as something outside of human. Android, robot, inhuman. And most of the others go along with it. Veronica even makes that joke about Pinocchio becoming a real boy. But what ticks me off the most is the fact that even if Walter never changed from the beginning, he was still a person. Just because he struggled to communicate, emote, and empathize doesn’t make him any less human. Just because a person has low empathy doesn’t mean they’re heartless or horrible. Walter shows he cares in so many ways, and he just gets repeatedly backhanded over it.
Like with Ice Ca-Cabes. He didn’t make an emotional last statement to Cabe, though he seemed genuinely alarmed by the situation. He was just as desperate to save Cabe, but Paige dug into him for not having the right words to say. And then afterwards he tells Cabe he loves him, and he says all this stuff that’s very sweet and heartfelt. But then Paige sweeps in and makes some comment about how she just assumes he’s an android and then he proves her wrong. Walter is allowed to express his emotions in whatever way he damn well pleases as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone. And him compartmentalizing in a serious situation that distresses him isn’t remotely being an android or beyond help or anything like that.
Paige is revered as this emotional godsend when in reality she’s highly reactive and completely unqualified to be playing shrink. Their genuine shrink seems mostly underqualified himself. Paige was recruited to help the team deal with social situations. Instead, she took it as an invitation to try her hardest to ‘fix’ them, specifically Walter. And she always brags or throws it in his face about how much work she’s put into him. Work, like it’s a task or a burden to try and help him understand, to try and be ‘human’ or ‘normal’. And all I can think is what would she think if someone spoke like that about Ralph? She expressed explicit disapproval over Ralph being like Walter, because God forbid anyone be as horrendous as poor rude, clueless Walter, right? (Specifically what Happy and Toby refer to him as with their Walt-Con chart). Because Walter has the emotional maturity of a child according to the woman DATING HIM (Why date him if you think of him in this manner?), so he couldn’t possibly have a functioning relationship or be enough to satisfy anyone.
They all treat Walter like he’s the worst outcome, the most awful thing. Walter might be rude and arrogant, but it’s one thing to correct those behaviors and another thing entirely to mock him for things he can’t help. Some people are physically incapable of connecting in stereotypically normal ways. But that doesn’t mean they’re broken, or not good enough, or not human. Walter is a person, full stop.

Ermanda’s Inner Sanctum: Scorpion 3.12 “Ice Ca-Cabes”
This episode is amazing!  The comedy works so well juxtaposed with the highly emotional drama.  I’ve come to expect this when an episode has a 12-14 minute intro that explores the personal storylines and mission setup before the first commercial break.  It showcases Cabe’s role as father and friend to the entire team, especially Walter with whom he has history, and how the team mobilizes to protect one of their own.  Every character does something they wouldn’t normally do and these moments of vulnerability also enlighten them in other areas of their lives.  This episode is another in season 3 that takes good advantage of the 10 pm time slot to the satisfaction of the adults in this fandom.  The content of this episode definitely places it in an elite category for the series.  In my opinion, it matches the cinematic greatness of 2.13 White Out with its content and structure.  This episode also serves as a bridge between the first half of the season and the second and puts the developments of season 3A into perspective.  As always, there are elements (hints and clues) that signal possible future developments and I am intrigued by all of them.  Here are my highlights!
Cabe & The Team
Cabe may be older muscle of the team and is their government handler, but he is definitely more than that.  He has adopted every single person as his own child and shares his life uniquely with each of them.  In return, they do or say things that show their appreciation for him.  Sly agrees to catch a snake (hello Super Fun Sly!); Toby gets emotional and recalls their boxing training days (a moment when they bonded); Quintis, Paige, and Sly (the members of Scorpion in romantic relationships) help him with his new love interest, Allie; and Walter expresses his love for him and deems him irreplaceable despite his “everyone is replaceable” statements at the top of the episode (I see you, Walter!).  He trusts them even when their efforts to save his life have a low chance of success.
Tumblr media
His most recent highlighted relationship this season is the one he has formed with Happy.  This new bromance will be called Cappy thanks to Marine (aka. @tesnea).  They have been spending more time together than usual as they became roommates for a couple of weeks while his home was repaired to remove mold.  Based on Happy’s comments in previous episodes, they have enjoyed each other’s company.  Happy has even changed her vocabulary from all the exposure to Cabe’s lifestyle at times.  He shares his MI-inducing love of meat with her.  Talks about about his happy wedding memories.  Gifts her his mother’s brooch for her to wear on her wedding day.  Happy gets inspired to go through with a wedding because his memories give her that final push. She acts as a wingwoman.  She’s a little sad that he’s going back home.  It all feels like Cabe making memories with the daughter he never had an opportunity to raise.  With the impending Quintis wedding, something tells me that Cabe will be serving a special role in it.
Then there is Cabe’s longstanding relationship with Walter.  It’s one full of dependence, heartbreak, and forgiveness.  Compared to Paige, Cabe has more experience with Walter’s personality.  He always knows when to give Walter the best advice.  Usually Walter’s life is in danger and Cabe works with the team to save him, but this time it was Walter’s chance to save Cabe again.  This moment of potential loss pushes Walter to verbally express his love for Cabe, creating another triumphant father-son moment between them.  Since this is the first time Walter knowingly utters the words, “I love you,” to the person to whom he’s speaking and the other person acknowledges, I wonder how far he will take this.
Carpe Diem: The Waige Flip
If you have been following my episode reviews, then you are already aware of my analysis on this season’s Waige flip.  Take their dynamic from season 2, reverse it, and you get Waige a la season 3.  Let me quickly reiterate for new readers.  Paige’s journey this season in the Waige dynamic shows her chasing after an idealistic desire instead of a realistic need.  It creates this internal conflict that is confounded by miscommunication as evidenced in episodes 3.05, 3.07, and 3.11.  Walter is making moves to better himself since he faces the potential to lose Paige.  This is interesting considering that the previous year was riddled with him not capitalizing on prime opportunities with Paige.
Right now she is angry with Walter over his treatment of Tim and, by extension, his departure.  Remember that Walter mended fences with Tim before he left.  Walter apologized for driving him away, but Tim reassured Walter that his departure is a personal choice and doesn’t blame him for it at all.  Paige did not hear this conversation.  The last thing she heard Walter say to Tim was that he would never be a part of Scorpion.  And she suggested that Tim take the new job opportunity after a discussion with Toby that she initiated.  Therefore, her anger is expected since she associates Tim’s departure with Walter’s lack of acceptance.  It all manifests in her words to Walter in the car ride to the hot spring and again at the hospital.  She says some things he needs to hear.  But the way she questions Walter’s emotional potential is an interesting development in the Waige saga.  It's a confirmation that she is blinded by her frustration. Question is: who reveals the missing piece that puts things into perspective for her?
Quintis Teamwork
Happy and Toby always work great together.  Every time I think about how they have used the skills of the other during missions this season, I recall the song, Make Me Better by Fabolous feat. Ne-Yo.
🎤 I’m a movement by myself But I’m a force when we’re together Mami, I’m good all by myself But, baby, you, you make me better 🎤
This episode is just another addition to what we’ve already seen in seasons 2 and 3.  And the “I’m proud of you” parallel (thanks @honey41283!) with a forehead kiss… LOVE IT!
Toby, You Good?
I have to call attention to the foreshadowing elephant in the room.  Toby expresses his desire for more positive reinforcement from Happy in 3.11.  While we know she has done this in the past with her words in pivotal moments, we know she struggles with consistency in the smaller moments.  And then there’s her aversion to PDA in the garage when others are present.  In this episode, he makes a gambling reference to talk about the risks involved in Operation: Save Cabe.  Toby is usually resilient.  When he isn’t, he’s neurotic and overbearing.  He’s always available for quality analysis for his friends.  But who comes for Toby when he can’t help himself?  I smell a Quintis shift. 😉😉😉😉
Tumblr media
Growth of Our Robots
Walter and Happy have the lowest EQs compared to the other geniuses.  So it is no surprise that we know more about these two characters’ lives than anyone else in the series - virtues, vices, childhood, parents, love interests, etc.  The emotional growth we’ve seen up to this point is absolutely beautiful to watch, specifically in terms of recognition and public acknowledgement.  Happy’s intent for her Christmas gift to Toby in 3.11 and Walter’s statements to Paige in the hospital in 3.12 take me back to a moment in 2.04 Robots.  They are satisfied by the notion that their genius and reliance on math and science make them emotionally rigid until their choices in a life-or-death situation cause them to admit that more facets of their personality are at play.  Even though Happy and Walter’s emotional growth is highly influenced by the efforts and actions of their love interests, these two characters manage to push one another in a unique and respectful way as friends when they talk about personal matters.
H: In case we don’t make it out of here, I just want to say I’m not really a robot. W: Thank you for clarifying.  I did know you weren’t made of circuitry. H: We both play a good game of denial.  It might be the one thing where I can beat you, but… right now my dad is up there trying to save me.  A man I’ve been looking for for 25 years.  I just never expected to want to live as badly as I do right now. W: I saved nine sailors’ lives instead of us.  I… supported that act with calculations.  But perhaps there was… some sentimentality attached.   H: And, uh, you let that certifiable lunatic stay in our garage. (chuckles) W: Uh… Maybe we’re changing. Maybe… maybe I’m not a robot either.
So when Walter expresses his sorrow over the fact that his failures are as frustrating as his triumphs in this episode, I can’t help but love him even more!  Seeing Happy yell emotional demands makes me confident in her ability to provide positive reinforcement even though she casts doubt in her overall success.  And here it comes…
HOLY CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!!!
Tumblr media
Drabbles…
Happy (to Cabe): Speaking of shacking up, isn’t that the cutie that’s hot for your booty? (pause) Oh, man, I’m starting to sound like Toby. 😂😂😂😂😂
Cabe has been spending too much time around these geniuses.  He couldn’t even catch the hint from Allie! 😂😂😂😂😂
Tumblr media
Sly: For Cabe, I will catch [a snake] with my bare hands. (turns to Happy) I got to borrow your pliers to pick up the snake. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The look on Walter’s face when he realizes that he must get naked to complete the task at hand… 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Walter and Paige trying to sneak peeks at each other… #scandalous 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The sexual innuendos in the Waige hydrogen sulfide capture scene… ROTFLMAO!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 So much stimulation and yet no fingers were involved! 😜😜😜 Somebody come pick me up off the floor!  I have to go back to work!
That little quip about Quintis kisses… 😂😂😂😂😂😂
The Hawaiian shirts… adorable fashion disaster! 😂😂😂
The whole dialogue when Walter and Paige get made… cantaloupes and weiners, anyone?!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Toby throws the tissue box at Cabe at the top of the episode and gets hit with one by Paige at the end.  Love the comedic prop link! 😂😂😂
Kudos to wardrobe again!  Love Paige’s blouse and Happy’s plaid shirt. 😍👍🏾👍🏾
Kudos to makeup for their work on Robert Patrick the episode! 👍🏾👍🏾
Kudos to the Scorpion writers for another all-time favorite! 👍🏾👍🏾

Scorpion: Ice Ca-Cabes
It occurs to me that the “Ice” in Ice Ca-Cabes refers not to just the ice that Cabe is immersed in, but also to the ice in the curling scene as well as the icy situation between Paige and Walter.
I *so* need a Spring thaw!

Scorpion 3x12 Review aka We’re Back on Track
Better late than never right?
Review time! I really enjoyed this episode, and plot/character-wise it’s one of the best of the season, and a VAST improvement on the Christmas episode!
The Cabe-Walter scenes were great, and for the first time since the Season 1 Finale, I genuinely felt like one of the team was in mortal peril!
The Quintis fore-head kiss was cute, but I don’t want to bang on about them not-kissing again! It was cute, and Happy getting the pin from Cabe was adorbs.
But my main issue with the episode is Paige. Why is she being such a cow? You don’t have to blame Walter for Tim leaving IT WAS HIS CHOICE! And she’s known Walter for two years, and she’s only mentioning Walter not having much emotion NOW!
Also Sly cracked me up with the snake!
Short review for a fairly straightforward episode..I enjoyed it!

I’m concerned...
On the island, you told me it didn’t matter if my EQ dropped, so long as I was able to figure out a way for us to survive, and it helped... But I am worried... that it might have dropped and stayed there.

I think Ice-ca-Cabes has been the best ep since S3 started, let it only go up from here!!!
Favorite parts of the ep
-The scene between Happy and Cabe, THE PIN, THE PIN!!
-Happy starting to sound like the Doc! ah couple goals!!
-Toby getting to show his doctor skills
-Sly being brave for Cabe and facing something that even a season ago would have been immensely difficult for him
-The hesitance and fear of failing to save Cabe from Toby, dear god the emotion from EKT!!
-How much Cabe has come to mean to Happy!!
-That forehead kiss of Toby to Happy and reiterating how proud he is as she sticks her hand in to help save Cabe
-Nakey Paige and Walt, the guy look at her ‘bubbles’, ‘tingling’ the facial expressions. I was dying with laughter. 😂
-Walter saying Cabe was his father
Walt telling Cabe how much he cares, HE CAN SAY “I love you”!! I actually teared up! PROGRESSION!! next step say it to Paige ;P
-The colorful hawaiian ‘Cabe’ shirts
-Protective Happy “reserving final approval until I decide she’s good enough for you ”
-”Burn your shmackle” oh Sly I love you!
-TOBY AND HIS POINTED RIBBING AT W&P SEEING EACH OTHER’S  ‘parts’!!! “melons and sausages, Cantaloupe and wieners”  “tater tots and salami” 😂😂😂
I think it was quite possible one of the best eps they have done. Well done scorpion writers!!😍😍

In the episode Faux Money Maux Problems... Veronica tries to claim that her style of parenting (IE: roping her young daughter into her cons) was what made it possible for Paige to succeed in situations like this case. Paige vehemently disagrees and obviously (rightly so, because her mother was neglectful and abusive in these terms) still has a problem with her mother’s treatment of her as a kid.
Throughout this episode, Walter tries a new approach to the team. He tries to be more patient and accepting of other’s contributions and repeatedly offers encouragement so that everyone understands that they are integral to the team. Everyone all shows unease and disapproval with this attempt, which doesn’t make any sense considering they’re always calling him selfish and arrogant. Toby points out that the whole thing won’t last because Walter would eventually snap.
However, Walter snaps because he’s got four minutes to save everyone and when he comes up with a plan everyone immediately sets to telling him it’s a terrible idea. They all partake in the “virtual conch” and interrupt him, which is not what that method is about in the slightest. They spend the whole episode shitting on his idea to be kinder and more considerate, then talk over him. And then when he finally snaps and declares Scorpion a “Logical Dictatorship” everyone rolls their eyes and goes along with it. And Walter’s plan works, as always.
Then, at the very end Walter is obviously still agitated about the whole thing. And he’s giving a lecture to two agents about the history of currency. And is giving them what Toby dubs a ‘dressing down’. Sylvester sought Paige out to help, asking her to interfere and stop Walter from committing an act that could possibly cause problems for Walter and the team. However, she suddenly cites her mother’s way of ‘sink or swim’ parenting and deems that she’s been working with Walter for two years and with their ‘foundation’ he needs to figure it out himself.
But that’s literally... Her job? She’s supposed to interfere when the team ruffles feathers or commits social faux pas. Walter is perhaps the biggest contender of these situations, and she just suddenly has decided to just let him figure things out. With the same frame of mind that Paige herself expressed disdain for her mother having??? How does that make sense? Also, that’s LITERALLY YOUR JOB!!! You can’t just not do your job and say you’ve done what you can. Just because Walter is more difficult than some of the others socially and emotionally doesn’t mean she can just give up on him. Which she basically starts to do in Ice Ca-Cabes where she confronts Walter for not being more emotional towards Cabe when he might be dying. AND WALTER APOLOGIZES FOR THAT! It’s not Walter’s fault that he has these issues, and it’s Paige’s job to explain things to him and point things out. It’s what she was hired for, she can’t just say ‘Oh well, I’ve done what I can’. Jesus.

I read your review about 3x12 and i enjoyed it. You were on point with everything you said. I just want to ask you what do you mean by ''who reveals the missing piece that puts things into perspective for her?'' in Waige analysis. Do you mean when Paige finally find out what Walter told her in episode 3x01-3x02 or what will happen when Walter's loss memory comes back about what happened in the rocket or something else?
Hello!  Thanks for your question!
The “who” is anyone who would reveal that Walter didn’t push Tim away.  As I said in my review, Tim and Walter know this but Paige doesn’t.  Recent interviews state that Tim and Paige will keep in touch while he is in the Middle East.  Will he say something during their conversation that causes Paige to seek clarification?  Will she receive advice from someone that gives her clarity?  She has this internal conflict that has her asking herself a lot of questions.
This season has explored new relationships in the cyclone that we didn’t see a lot in previous ones.  Paige and Toby’s friendship is particularly unique because these are the two people who were most impacted by Happy and Walter’s green card marriage.  Paige gave him parenting advice.  Toby said things to her that exposed her internal conflict.  It is also no surprise that her mother, Veronica Dineen, arrives for a multi-episode arc when we are learning more of Paige’s backstory.  Parent visits are common with this show.  We have met some more than once.  But there’s only two other characters whose parent(s) were given arcs that were designed to push that character’s emotional development: Happy and Walter.  Happy reunited with her father.  Walter remained distant with his parents, but learned the importance of reaching out even though his relationship with them is still strained.  So what does this say for Paige? 😉
Paige is already aware of Walter’s love for her after 3.03.  There’s still a chance Walter could recall those events.  The brain is a fascinating organ!  I love to study it!  (Warning: NERD ALERT!)  Walter was not in a hypoxic state for a long period of time in space.  His descent into the Earth’s atmosphere gave him enough oxygen to break out of the hallucination and not suffer major brain damage.  Afterwards, he couldn’t recall anything.  Recall is a tricky thing.  If the writers are looking to touch on this in Waige developments, it will be interesting to see how they do it.  The reality is that we recall events in unique ways.  The brain stores a lot of information and its function in human behavior predisposes it to twist perception at times.  Sometimes an idea is not inspired by an event that happened in real time, but one that happened during REM sleep.  Think about the times you may have recalled something that never happened in reality.  In other cases, it takes a stimulus (sound, smell, mental state) to activate recall.  So we shall see!

Scorpion 3x12 liveblog post #8:  Team Quintis/Hands
Scorpion 3x12 Ice Ca-Cabes
Team Quintis “operating” on Cabe [scene #20]
Toby: Time to put those sticky fingers to work
...
Toby: There ya go. Goop ‘em up good. Just put your fingers on mine and slide them down to find the artery… –
Happy nods, takes a deep breath, sticks her hands in… (while) she turns her head away… *this is so gross, and you know how she is about blood*
Toby:  – … That’s it, you got it, just like carving a pumpkin, but instead of a pumpkin, your hands are inside Cabe’s body cavity…
Happy:  Oh, God…
Toby:  Just move your fingers down a half inch and… there, you’re right on the cut, spread that glue all over – don’t be stingy with it –
Happy:  (is so grossed out…) It feels like cold spaghetti…
Toby:  Well, here’s the good news…you’re done…slowly remove your paw from the federal agent. (Happy does that, then Toby does, too)
Toby: (continued) Great work. I’d fist bump you, but our hands are covered in guts.
INSERT: Toby looking at Happy, starting with “Hey, ” then kissing her forehead and saying "I’m really proud of you”
Happy:  Hope the others are getting what we need or I just did that for nothing.

as an individual episode i actually DO really enjoy a christmas car-roll (obviously since i’m making this post now after thinking abt it all day lmfao) but like it does NOT make sense this late in the series. like isn’t “your teammates are your family, they can’t be replaced you need them & it’s ok to express your love for them” the exact same lesson that walter learned last season in ice ca-cabes? very fun episode i enjoyed thoroughly (despite them using that fucking kick ass christmas song AGAIN as if it wasn’t cringey enough the first time dbrhjgkrtg) but like this concept would’ve made so much more sense for like a s2 episode. they’re constantly developing their characters then jsut undoing that progress & having them learn the same shit again and for WHY especially with walter.
