Thoughts on the First Half of A Series of Unfortunate Events
So I’m halfway through a Series of Unfortunate Events.
Its actually a lot better than the movie adaption, but it lacks the same visual “oomph” the movie had. Most of that has to do with the smaller budget and some really bad CG backgrounds, but it does occasionally make up for it with what I’m assuming are some well made minatures and some Wes Anderson-esque cinematography (note: I have only ever seen one third of Moonrise Kingdom. I am not an expert on his style.
I love not only how dark it is, but also how camp it is. There is overacting everywhere, but it adds nicely to the retro vibe of the show. The only time this was a problem was in the first episode in the very beginning. A slow start is painful with this type of acting, but as soon as the plot picks up momentum, it gets much, much more entertaining.
Neil Patrick Harris is a makes for a good Count Olaf... actually quite a bit more threatening than Jim Carrey... but he’s also significantly stupider. I like stupid characters, but I know thats not everyone’s cup of tea.
Patrick Warburton is an amazing Lemony Snicket, even if this incarnation is a bit different than what you’d expect. He’s doing his best Rod Serling impression, which is actually kind of genius. Book Lemony Snicket’s narration is well aware of the limits provided by the print medium, and his story’s often take advantage of the face. Everybody whose read the book remembers the line about Claus reading the same sentence over and over. Everbody whose read the book remembers the line about Claus reading the same sentence over and over. But these jokes don’t necessarily convert to film easily. By making him into a late night serial host, they get the spirit of the character right while also bringing to mind a staple of classic television. He still makes fun of the medium, but here the medium is different. I especially love the fact that he can casually walk around the set and characters without actually interacting with them, an aspect fans of The Twilight Zone are plenty familiar with.
I also like the multiracial casting. Admittedly I always imagined Justice Strauss as a black woman for some reason, and yet she’s depicted as white in the show, but thats neither here nor there and has no effect on my opinion on  the show.
I also never imagined Uncle Monty as an indian, but if anything, his casting makes his character feel even more book accurate than the first movie was. Plus, Uncle Monty was one of the most likable characters depicted in the show.
All in all, I do recommend this show to fans of the books and those who didn’t think the first movie did it any justice. Its actually a really good series, and I can’t wait to see the rest of it tomorrow.
What did you guys think?
