Osaka, 1601
nedpan is one of those ships where i feel like it might've started with horniness and curiosity, before catching feelings that run pretty deep. because when they first meet in 1600, it's a pretty tumultuous era: imo, they're both somewhat sharp and jaded old world nations, who were recently or still at war with their neighbours. so, they're cautious about trust and emotional vulnerability; i reckon they initially view their rship as a transient fling—a dutch ship (De Liefde) is shipwrecked on japanese shores and stuck far from home for a while so well, why not indulge a little? but...that first meeting ends up starting something that grows into an enduring relationship. (also cherry blossoms!—because of that 17th century poem by matsuo basho that goes "the dutchmen too have / come to see the cherry blossoms / saddle my horse"—about the dutch consul's regular springtime audience with the shogun.)

Ineffable Husbands eras
So I named the first section of history the Pre-Arrangement era, which of course led me thinking to how I would divide up the rest. This is of course just how I interpret the vibes, I'd love to hear thoughts!
Pre-Arrangement (4004 BC ~ 41 AD)
Getting to know each other—and themselves. They're both learning and growing in this brand new world, and they test each other out whenever the job brings them to the same place (There isn't a whole lot of place else yet to be). During this time they learn that they can not only trust each other, but the era ends with them realizing they actively enjoy each other's company. They have much more in common with each other than their respective sides.
4004 BC - Eden (Meeting. Surprising each other)
3004 BC - Mesopotamia (The flood. Aziraphale disappoints Crowley by sticking to Heaven's line.)
2500 BC - Uz (Job. Crowley tries to get Aziraphale to disappoint him again, but instead the angel puts his faith in the demon. Their Own Side is formed way back here.)
33 AD - Golgotha (Crucifixion. Crowley tests Aziraphale again, the angel passes and Crowley opens up about his name change)
41 AD - Rome (Oysters. Aziraphale is the one to reach out this time, and doesn't shy away from being unangelic.)
Formation of the Arrangement (537 ~ 1601)
Let's do this on purpose (for Strictly Business reasons). What defines this era is that Aziraphale is nervous and Crowley thinks they've got it made. Even well after they've agreed to working together, they're still doing the song and dance of Aziraphale pretending he doesn't know what's happening and Crowley seducing him into it.
537 AD - Kingdom of Wessex (Knights. Still running into each other by accident, Crowley proposes a more radical version of what will be the final agreement)
[1020ish - when the book says they reached the Arrangement]
1601 - Globe Theatre, London (Hamlet. They've switched jobs "dozens of times" by now, presumably that's at least 24 occasions but less than 100.)
And now I've gone and done math about it, so...
if the start date is also accurate for the show... by the 1600s they're meeting up at least once every 25 years on average.
(and that's for the minimum of 24 Arrangements)
In my unlikely scenario of them having 99 Arrangements already, that would bring it down to 5 years
Even if for some unlikely reason Aziraphale changed his mind and went back right away in 537, 24 Arrangements would have them meeting up on average every 44 years
Of course, these are exact averages and they aren't robots. It's likely meetings started out less often and increased in frequency as they got more comfortable. Maybe it was every 100 years in the beginning, who knows exactly! (only one man and he's not talking) Do with this information what you will. Let's move on.
Definitely Not Friends (1793 ~ 1862)
Let's do this on purpose (for personal reasons). No longer are they only arranging to meet up in-between going to each others' jobs so the other can stay home, this is going out of their way to spend time together.
During this era, Aziraphale has finally started to relax, while Crowley is doing the opposite. Turns out (in classic Crowley form) this might not have been as good an idea as he originally thought, but he's in way too deep now. The era ends when Crowley shatters Aziraphale's growing comfort.
1793 - Paris (Revolution. It's plausible that Aziraphale may have arranged this on purpose, to see Crowley without admitting that's what he wants. For his part, Crowley goes out of his way to stage a rescue, even though he's now able to admit it could get him in real trouble.)
1800 - London (Bookshop opening [from the script book, semi-canonical]. In Paris, Crowley knew Aziraphale was planning to open a bookshop, now he knows the exact date and is swinging by to bring him presents. Also sneakily puts a stop to the other angels recalling Aziraphale from Earth; just as he knew Aziraphale wouldn't like hell, he knows he wouldn't like going back to heaven either.)
1827 - Edinburgh (Grave robbing. Crowley invites Aziraphale to hang out in a graveyard in the middle of the night in what is totally not an old-timey date. The only pretense is a personal excuse ['hey angel come see this statue of your boss lmao']. This is just straight up spending time together.) Interestingly, this is also the last time we will really see them traveling together, everything from here on out is around London.
1862 - St. James Park (Holy water requested, denied. This meeting is oddly formal for all that came before it, even back in S1 when it followed right after the Paris rescue. Crowley is seriously rattled. The Holy Water request is a declaration that he would take on hell for them. Aziraphale doesn't understand and isn't ready to hear it even if he did.)
We Both Know that We Both Know (1941 ~ 1967)
We are dangerously aware of what's going on here. It is made very clear that they will both go to insane lengths to ensure the other will stay in their life. They still can't say it out loud, but the remaining pretense is tissue paper thin.
1941 - London (The Blitz. It's been 80 years since they've seen each other, and yet Crowley saunters back in right at the moment Aziraphale needs him. They spend a giddy night being ridiculous together, only to get the wake up call of their closest call yet from head office. It's the night of Aziraphale's two realizations: That they're in love, and the full weight of the danger that puts them in.)
1967 - Soho (Holy Water given. Aziraphale isn't happy about it, but he makes the decision to trust Crowley in hopes being on the same team will keep him safer than he'd be otherwise. It's the complete opposite of the decision he made to walk away 105 years ago. He also gives them both a slim glimpse of hope for the future.)
A Test of Faith (2008 ~ 2019)
Whose side are we on? 6000 years of becoming more and more of Earth while pretending that's not what they're doing, and it's finally time to either admit that or don't. Still not quite ready to admit that choosing "the world" also means each other, but they do choose their own side.
2008 - Baby antichrist delivered (Present day dates aren't outright stated, this is technically "11 years ago")
2019 - Apocawasn't (date from when S1 aired)
What Are We [Limbo] (2020 ~ 2023)
Finally free (what are we waiting for?). Stuck in a holding pattern, neither of them know how to move forward. All the coping mechanisms they've developed and sunk into over millennia are breaking down. Crowley is more stressed than ever waiting for the other shoe to fall, Aziraphale doesn't know who he is without the structure of heaven. Something needs to shake things up, and when it comes it shakes them apart.
2020 - Lockdown short (Semi-canonical. The excuse to hole up together is right there and they both clearly want it! But neither of them knows how to take that step.)
2023 - Gabriel disappears from heaven and chaos ensues (season 2 airdate)
As for what's next, I'm guessing something like:
Divorce Era (Figuring out who they are and what matters to them without the other for the first time. Throwback to the pre-Arrangement)
What Are We [Redux] (allied again, but the plot is giving us a convenient excuse to not address things between us. This is 'We Both Know' and 'Limbo' combined)
Ineffable Husbands time (when they've finally finally gotten it all out on the table. They are going to be insufferable.)
And those are my thoughts! Let me know what you think :)

Shakespeare Weekend
This weekend we enjoy Shakespeare’s romantic comedy, Twelfth Night the thirty-fifth volume of the thirty-seven volume The Comedies Histories & Tragedies of William Shakespeare, published by the Limited Editions Club (LEC) from 1939-1940. The original full title of the play is Twelfth Night, Or What You Will, and it was written between 1600 and 1601 with its first performance noted in 1602 at the Middle Temple in London. Twelfth Night was not published until 1623 with its inclusion in the First Folio.
Italian artist Francesco Carnevali (1892-1987) illustrated the LEC’s edition with colorfully detailed watercolors. Carnevali was a professor at the Academy of the Book in Urbino, Italy and was serendipitously already working on illustrations for Twelfth Night when the LEC wrote to him asking if he’d like to collaborate on their Shakespeare publications. The resulting watercolors are unique in their angled perspective providing readers with an elaborate view of the action as if they were sitting in balcony theater seats and transporting them into the ambiance of a seaside town.
Laid in with our holding is a program from the Spring 1941 performance of Twelfth Night performed at Milwaukee’s historic Pabst Theatre. The performance starred Helen Hayes as Viola, Maurice Evans as Malvolio, and was presented by The Society of Allied Arts.
Tumblr media
The volume was printed in an edition of 1950 copies at the Press of A. Colish. Each of the LEC volumes of Shakespeare’s works are illustrated by a different artist, but the unifying factor is that all volumes were designed by famed book and type designer Bruce Rogers and edited by the British theatre professional and Shakespeare specialist Herbert Farjeon. Our copy is number 1113, the number for long-standing LEC member Austin Fredric Lutter of Waukesha, Wisconsin.

Aziraphale and Crowley Timeline
I made a timeline of the Aziraphale and Crowley relationship based on the TV show, book, stage directions, and Neil Gaiman’s blog. It was designed to track negative space and off-screen interactions for the purposes of fic writing, so maybe other fic writers would enjoy it. Please add anything I missed. I’ll edit as necessary.
Before the Beginning — Nebula rollout
Aziraphale shares his name with a heavy implication that they have not met before.
Crowley tells Nina and Maggie, “We’ve been talking for millions of years,” implying some sort of relationship before Crowley’s fall.
Sunday, October 21, 4004 B.C. at 9:13 a.m. — The creation of the universe
4004 B.C., "just after the beginning" — The Garden of Eden
Crowley (Crawly) tells Aziraphale his new name, which implies minimal interaction since Crowley’s fall. They were aware of each other’s presence in the garden as evidenced by Crowley having noticed the flaming sword.
3004 B.C., Mesopotamia — Noah’s Ark
Crowley follows up on the flaming sword, which implies but does not confirm that they haven’t interacted since Eden.
[3004 BC - 2500 BC: NO INTERACTION as evidenced by Aziraphale’s comment, “I haven’t seen you since the flood.”
2500 B.C., Land of Uz — Job
2000 B.C., Sodom and Gomorrah
It’s confirmed from the TV show that Aziraphale was present (as evidenced by their comment about Sandalphon’s participation)
It’s confirmed from the book that Crowley was not present and did not visit afterwards.
[800 BC - 200 BC: Deleted scene from TV show, Arabian Nights-inspired]
33 A.D., Golgotha — The crucifixion
41 A.D., Rome — Aziraphale runs into Crowley
537 A.D., Kingdom of West Essex — Crowley suggests they stop working just to cancel each other out
[1020 A.D. (BOOK CANON) — Arrangement (non-interference) is established. Then, they extend the arrangement to “hold the fort” for one another.]
[1023 A.D. (BOOK CANON) — Crowley comes back to argue that you need to start people off equal in order to let them choose between good and evil, equivalent of The Resurrectionists in the TV series.]
[1400s: “Papal” scene, cut from TV show]
[1567 A.D. — Mary Queen of Scots dies, this scene was cut and converted to The Resurrectionists]
[1556 AD - 1598 AD (BOOK CANON): Crowley is in Spain when he receives a commendation for the Spanish Inquisition. He checks it out then comes back and gets drunk for a week. Time range is evidenced by the line, “That Hieronymus Bosch,” who is a painter who inspired King Phillip II.]
1601, Globe Theatre, London — Hamlet
CONFIRMED: Multiple interactions between Wessex (537 AD) and now as evidenced by Crowley’s statement that they’ve covered for each other “dozens of times now.”
1650, Unknown — First “I Was Wrong” dance (performed by Aziraphale)
[1600 - 1800, United States: A scene set during the Wild West, cut from TV show]
1793, Paris — The French Revolution
A recent interaction is implied by Crowley saying, “I thought you were opening a bookshop.”
1800, London — The bookshop opens (confirmed that it opened “a couple years” after Mr. Hatchard in Piccadilly, founded 1797)
[Book — Crowley is asleep through most of the 19th century, gets up in 1832 for bathroom]
1820s, U.K. — Aziraphale’s diary excerpt, in which he mentions that he told Crowley the story “afterwards” (although “afterwards” can be a very long time for two immortal beings so it doesn’t confirm much)
1827, Edinburgh  — The Resurrectionists
[Confirmed: “It was the last I was to see of Crowley for quite some time.”]
1862, St. James Park, London — Crowley requests holy water
Their understanding of the agreement is, “Stay out of each other’s way. Lend a hand when needed.”
[1862 - 1941: NO INTERACTION as evidenced by the stage directions that Aziraphale has not seen Crowley in a hundred years.]
1941, London
[1960s: cut scene set in America, note: both female-presenting]
1967, Soho — Aziraphale gets holy water for Crowley
2008, U.K. — Antichrist is born
2013, U.S. — Crowley and Aziraphale both begin work for the Dowlings
[“The story starts, as it will end, in a garden” — although technically garden is no longer where it started]

On December 12th 1574, Anne of Denmark, the wife of King James VI, was born.
Anne was the second child, and second girl, of Frederik the Second and his queen, Sophie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The couple were initially married by proxy, which means on paper without them being present, and Anne was finding it difficult to make the journey across stormy seas, so James set about fetching her himself and upon reaching and presenting himself to her “in boots and all” and kissed her, in the Scottish fashion!
They were formally married the 23rd of November 1859 in Oslo before returning to Scotland. On the 17th of May she was crowned queen of Scotland. The ceremony lasted seven hours and , Anne’s dress was opened during it and “s "a bonny quantity of oil” was poured upon her breast and arm. James was at first infatuated by his bride, but later the couple often disagreed, though in the early years of their marriage, James seems always to have treated Anne with patience and affection.
Although Anne had been brought up in the Lutheran religion, she converted Roman Catholicism during the 1590s. In Basilikon Doron, written 1597-1598, James described marriage as “the greatest earthly felicitie or miserie, that can come to a man! Nothing changes with marriage through the centuries eh! lol
Despite James’ alleged homosexual tendencies, for which there is no definitive proof, Anne gave birth to their first child, Henry Frederick Stuart on 19 February 1594. She was given no say in the care and upbringing of her son who on James insistence, was placed in the custody of John Erskine, Earl of Mar at Stirling Castle.
Distressed at this situation she mounted a campaign for custody of her son, which James resisted, leading to further friction between the couple. Prince Henry was followed by a daughter, Elizabeth Stuart in 1596, then Margaret in 1598, who died at fourteen months old, a second son, Charles, later Duke of York (and Charles I), was born at Dunfermline in 1600, Charles was at first a sickly child and it was not thought likely that he would survive. Then came Robert, Duke of Kyntyre, born in 1601, who died at the age of four months. She didn’t have it easy in childbiirth, after eventualy gaining custody of Henry she gave birth to a daughter, Mary in 1605 and later her last child, Sophia in 1607, both these children failed to survive to adulthood, Mary died at two years and Sophia at a day old. Mary and Sophia are buried at Westminster Abbey.
The infant mortality rate was high in the seventeenth century, a fact of life that not even royalty could elude. After narrowly surviving the birth and death of her last child, Sophia, in 1607, Anne’s decision to have no more children resulted in widening the gulf between the couple. Queen Anne died aged 44 on 2 March 1619, of a dangerous form of dropsy. An inquest discovered Anne to be "much wasted within, specially her liver”.
James did not attend his wife’s funeral, claiming illness, his symptoms, according to Sir Theodore de Mayerne, included “fainting, sighing, dread, incredible sadness…” Anne was buried in the south aisle of the Henry VII Chapel, Westminster Abbey, on 13 May 1619.

Quote

fun details i noticed while watching good omens!
when aziraphale lists the dates that he did the apology dance (1650, 1793, and 1941) not one but TWO of these years are familiar. while i have a few leads on what 1650 would entail, the other two are very straightforward
1793. you may recognize the date as the same year that aziraphale found himself locked up in the bastille. so clearly this indicates that not only did aziraphale buy crowley some crepes, he also apologized for the bastille thing. with dance.
and 1941 is the year that aziraphale was rescued by crowley from a church in london when he was about to be killed by nazis. BUT i doubt the apology was for that because... guess what happened before 1941? i believe he is apologizing for the argument he had with crowley over the matter of holy water in saint james' park in 1862!
now i'm going to put the few leads i have on 1650 down here, though what we have involves a higher level of searching . feel free to stop reading now and i'll add a cut
when we look in the script book, and the actual book, there are only a few things i can find in the era (for reference, i am considering only things that happened in 1600, though it could theoretically be anything before this point considering. i just don't want to take forever)
the closest scene to this date is in 1601, when aziraphale and crowley meet in the globe theater to watch hamlet. this scene, while loads of fun, i doubt to be really entirely related.
there are multiple things that happen in the 1650s but, later than 1650 itself. agnes nutter's book of prophecies was published in 1655 and agnes nutter herself was killed in 1656. these are after the date of 1650 but it is interesting that this dance was done during a time that she was alive
1654 was when the book annales veteris et novi testaments was published, containing the date of when the universe was created down to the second. also interesting. also unhelpful
1651 was the year that the buggre alle this bible was published. close but still after. sorry
in 1653, bilton and scaggs bought one of shakespeare's lost folios and then proceeded to lose it again. still too late.
1631 was the year the wicked bible was published (known for featuring the quote "thou shalt commit adultery")
and that's all i can really find. so probably a dead end here i am sorry to say! so uhhh sorry about that (should i do the dance?) but 2/3 is good too

横浜市電保存館 横浜市電1600形1601号車
Tumblr media
