Every time somebody hand waves me being concerned about using native tribal names for dogs not connected in anyway to those tribes as being “overly sensitive” I want to tell them to pull up their Labrador’s pedigree and go back a little bit and tell me if you still think dog folk should be naming their dogs the n-word.

im happy my post is garnering discussion but honestly i wasnt around for 2018-2021 fandom on tumblr and i was mainly talking about how its kind of silly to get mad at people for portraying colonizer countries as mean, or calling it demonization and stuff. like its okay not to like personally portraying ur fav characters as mean or part of the state, but getting irritated at the fact that it exists or is popular imo kind of misses the fact that this… is the state and nation personification fandom. and its hard to say its not canon when canon did once portray the characters in uniform and at times involved in their state activities… like the early strips discussing western imperialism in china is literally ‘china being bullied by the allies’ ‘france wanting to grope china’ ‘china being treated like a maid’ etc etc like they were very much. the state LOL also china and japan’s canon relationship, as much as I have my issues with it, has an entire thing about china being stabbed by japan… i do feel like hetalia started out as a history nerd’s history exploration that blended humour with ‘what i find cute’ with satire etc etc, which inevitably involves illustrating the personifications as vessels of state and culture, and although the modern strips have deviated quite a bit… well, different people will approach this series for different reasons, right? Whether its serious or comedic content showing the characters as mean or imperialist or unpleasant, it’s not something that deviates too far from canon (if we take all canon eras into consideration) nor is it surprising given how history laden the topic is.
#diary#hetalia#hater tag#also have some issues with some things being called drama…#like i know some of u think of me and some others as drama stirring little devils#honestly i dont enjoy drama that much but ill become upset when i see things that i see as racist or insensitive…#because im of the opinion that this fandom requires extra sensitivity given the subject matter.#let people have fun#but#also be careful yk? i guess for me personally im always trying to be careful#when im out of my depth i try to talk to ppl with better understanding while doing my own research#and if ive written or expressed antyhing bad (which i certainly have even on this blog many times before)#i try to change my stances with new info… and like#this is important to me and its important for me to read ppls thoughts bc.#i know what its like to be treated racistly and dismissed. or to have things and history precious to me twisted#but anyways rambling aside… i guess what i want to say is i understand it seems annoying but#if you post something insensitive… and someone gets upset… then thats just how it is. hetalia is sensitive#again ive definitely posted bad insensitive things. ive been told im acting out of line.#and it sucks. but… sometimes you have to understand ur own irritation doesnt outweigh the hurt#and listen a little#sometimes i like things that i then find are insensitive or cruel. and id rather not engage with it than dismiss peoples hurt… or something#honestly i keep most of my whining private i promise JLKFHDJGLKFH BC FOR THE MOST PART I THINK I CAN TELL THE DIFF BETWEEN#when i have a real issue and when im just nitpicking#so i keep my more petty whining or basic stuff private#but if i see something egregious then i dont want to be quiet#and if a friend of mine (esp if theyre a kid) is upset or hurt by racism I dont want to be quiet

I will be very honest that I do not know much about the holiday of Diwali, but I have seen a handful of signs locally for celebrations occurring on November 12. I am given to understand that it is a light festival though this is approximately the limit of my knowledge.
In 2006, as a part of the Festivals of the World series, Mattel released a Barbie to represent Diwali.
Tumblr media
The Festivals of the World collection was a bit of a strange one, as there are some tonal differences between different festivals represented in the collection. For example, on the back of the box you can see Diwali being displayed alongside Kwanzaa and Oktoberfest.
Tumblr media
This was not the first time that Mattel explored this area. I have found multiple articles referring to Mattel creating a Diwali doll in 1998 as part of an attempt to expand the Barbie line into India; I haven't been able to find this doll specifically, but there are a number of Barbie in India and Expressions of India dolls from around this era.
Tumblr media
The articles linked above are critical of Mattel for showcasing a stereotypical and at times inaccurate/disrespectful display of Indian culture, including the claim that the 1998 Diwali Barbie I can't find had blue eyes.
Of course, there's no way to know if Mattel were earnestly trying to showcase diversity and falling short, or if they were just trying to market to a new audience. We can make our assumptions, but we don't necessarily know for sure.
If anyone who has more knowledge and understanding of this area I would really appreciate their input. My apologies if any of the above is controversial or incorrect; please correct me if so.

tfw u kinda wanna make a post about how frustrating it is to try to find racial identity and the pressure of not really having a good answer to "what are you?" because 75% of your ethnicity is stuff that is sometimes considered white or sometimes considered something else or sometimes considered its own race and you've got pale skin and only speak english but you've been discriminated against for your cultural values and facial features but only some of the time in some places and you demonstrably have white privilege in most contexts but not all the time and how much white privilege equals whiteness and on the other hand isn't that awfully similar the concept of racial dilution which is just pc genocide anyway and if you self determine as white is that the right thing to do or is it just assimilation but if you self determine as not white is that respecting and claiming your heritage or is it appropriation/brownface and also what do you do if you self determine one way and then get treated the other way and you know based on the reality that race is socially constructed it can be true that the same person can sometimes be white and sometimes be not white but if you actually say that out loud to people they think you're trying to be a snowflake for woke points based on a technicality-
but also u don't wanna post about that because. if you actually say that out loud to people,

okay im finally going to say it because you all need to lose your minds as hard as we have. So being on here I've definitely gotten some interesting homestuck opinion messages, asks, and replies, but NOTHING tops the ask me and my friends call the " jeffrey dahmer dirk" ask.
Back in 2022, my bestfriend derek got an anon he never posted of someone saying their 'unpopular' opinion that dirk strider and jeffrey dahmer are alike and basically tried to argue that dirk might do what he did. They listed reasonings and everything they were NOT playing around. and they sent this to him as if he would agree that a FICTIONAL NERDY TEENAGER FROM HOMESTUCK and a REAL SERIAL KILLER THAT TOOK LIVES AND DESTROYED FAMILIES are the same.
We have completely lost our minds over this ask and it has cemented itself as the weirdest and worst thing ive EVER seen get said in the fandom ever. its essentially an inside reference me and my friends mention randomly because its burned into our memory as a " completely what never to send someone" example after reading it.
I don't know if my friend still has the screenshot, and if not its definitely floating in our dms, but if I do find it I wont post it because its as insensitive and ridiculous as you could imagine. But you NEED to know about this.

I hate posts that are like "americans suck so bad" and then they list a bunch of things that mainly apply to white middle class people. And then they'll be like "actually your education system is really good and really well funded, you just like being stupid" as if poor people of color aren't attending broken ass schools where there's no money for paper and where teachers have to pay for all their materials themselves. Like yeah people in white, upper middle class suburban neighborhoods are attending big schools with lots of funding but to pretend that's every american's experience is so silly.
Idk I just feel like it's so cruel that the classes of people who struggle to survive in a country that hates them get to be lumped in with the rich entitled people that go on vacation or whatever.

i have. So Many Thoughts in the drafts or waiting to be written and then backspaced re: racism in silm fandom (specifically cultural appropriation in fanart and the portrayal of certain characters/races (i.e., races w/in jirtverse: elves, men, dwarves, orcs, etc.) with certain features) as well as modern fantasy adaptations as a whole (though i am admittedly less knowledgeable to speak on the latter).
most likely, i will refrain from posting these thoughts into existence where people can read them, as i do not want it to seem as if i am looking to start discourse. because i'm not. it's just that to me, a poc in what i perceive to be a predominantly white fandom in which culture from our real world are boiled down to 'aesthetics to appropriate and slap onto white characters' with little/no regard for cultural respect+significance, it feels... gross, and even more so is the fandom's widespread tendency to just eat it all up with no pause to consider the implications of certain depictions and how blatanty racist some are.
but like i said, i won't post the full extent of my thoughts because we'd be here for days because once again, i'm not looking to start any discourse. however, i DO wish to know if any other poc in the fandom feel this way, because i know it's frustrating at times to have white artists (especially those with a huge following) slap cultural wear onto white characters and call it an aesthetic. things like that. do you understand?

Speaking as a non-American, I do not feel confident in my ability to fully assess the American Stories Collection of Barbies but nonetheless I will do my best to respectfully approach this series.
The American Stories Collection were a series of historical Barbies, representing what Mattel presumably thought were important parts of America's culture. These were released across 1994, 1995 and 1996. Each of them came with props to go along with their historical outfits, as well as a storybook.
For example, Civil War Nurse Barbie comes with a little bag presumably for her medical equipment.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile Patriot Barbie, whose box text indicates that she is out showing support for the Founding Fathers, has a little bell.
Tumblr media
There were in fact two different Barbies in the collection labelled Pioneer Barbie, one from 1994 and the other from 1995.
Tumblr media
One had a predominately green dress, a basket of apples, and a storybook entitled "Western Promise"; the other a milk jug, a floral dress with an apron, and a storybook entitled "Shopkeeper's Dream".
Tumblr media
This collection also featured dolls referred to as, and I believe this term is frequently now considered outdated to say the least, though I admit that as someone who is both white and non-American I am not fully informed about this, "American Indian Barbies".
Tumblr media
These two are the only dolls in the collection who are not depicted as white, and they are also the only dolls who have children or infants instead of props. The first of these has a storybook entitled "Animal Gifts", and the second has a story called "Baby Blue Feather".
Tumblr media
I do not know to what extent, if any, these costumes are historically accurate; but something about them leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
It is apparent, of course, that these dolls as whole represent a view of American history that is biased and from a colonialist perspective; I feel as though by the mid-90s Mattel could, and should, have done a better job.
(As usual please feel free to correct me if I am wrong about something, off base about anything, or if you would like this post tagged in any other way.)

man people who racebend characters of color are REALLY showing their asses in how they think we're all interchangable and see us as a checklist for "Getting A Good Grade In Woke :)" rather than just... acknowledgment of the existing natural diversity of planet earth and the different ways people make life of it.
its insensitive to reimagine disneys tiana as asian, not because asian people dont face racism or cant enjoy cooking or didnt exist in 1920s new orleans- but because tiana is the first and still only black disney princess and was written and designed as such. her race informs and deepens her writing and her struggles, her love for her dad and specifically wanting to validate a jim crow era black man's sacrifices for his family, her connection to him and her community through her cooking when they all struggle to keep food on the table. similarly mulan shouldnt be rebranded as african american, not because black women couldnt exist in china or never crossdressed to join the army or dont face misogyny- but because mulan is a folk hero of historical chinese legend and as mulan, specifically cannot be divorced from that background. (also, frankly? the early white princesses arent really as well written for the most part, and their culture of origin is virtually never taken into account aside from visuals in their development, if that).
thats what ticked me off so bad about the monster high reboot. nb frankie was so cool and an asian draculaura was so fun but then they just... took away the black girl? and by extension, her sisters and thus ALL the black girls and like, dude not cool? nothing wrong with her being latina but being afrolatina is a different experience than being african american. afrolatinas deserve rep but that doesnt mean they shouldve taken clawdeen from african american girls. then there was some back and forth as to where specifically draculaura's family is from, and lagoona's origins vary from source to source dolls vs movie vs tv too and you just really feel the lack of effort and cohesion in the writing rooms. it really is just all just numbers on a chart, quotas to be filled there.
even with shows like winx where its ambiguous at times and kind of a raceblind take at others, theres so little for ANY of us that redesigning without that in mind becomes poaching. why would you take when ive been given so precious little? why would you want to change this one gift from people like me that lets me know i'm seen and loved? sure, other people deserve to have that too but if they want to borrow then take those who have so much they wont even miss it?
asdfghjkl sorry for the essay, i guess i had a breakthrough in how to put why this specific issue gets to me.
YESSS THANK YOU
Like it's so fucking weird to me!!! And GOD I wanted to say something about gen3 Clawdeen but I wasn't sure if I was "right" or if it was my place to say but exactly!! Being afrolatina is wonderful and they deserve representation too but it is still ultimately a different experience from being black american and they shouldn't have taken that away from black girls! I'm glad that mixed kids have her as rep now but they shouldn't have taken her away!! They very easily could've made a new character to fill that role instead!
AND YES to the winx point!! At the end of the day, it doesn't matter that some of the girls races or ethnicities are more ambiguous, they still have Canon races and people shouldn't be taking that away and giving it to someone else. That's not how representation works! Ever! Like if someone redesigned Aisha to be asian, that wouldn't make me happy or give me More representation. All that would be doing is taking away representation from black people! Same thing with Musa, Flora, Nabu, etc.
It also feels So fucking scummy when a white person's excuse is just that they Personally didn't see a character as their canonical race/ethnicity and that's why they changed it?? Like I don't give a shit if You personally don't see Nabu as an Indian man. That doesn't change his blatant coding. Same with characters like Flora who are more ambiguous. It doesn't matter if You Personally don't like her being Latina. She is. Fucking deal???
