It’s been a while, so I thought I’d update and expand on my previous list of favorite interactive fiction works in progress!

Did anybody ask for this? No. Am I making it anyway to satisfy my obsession for list making? Maybe. Anyways, recommendations under the cut! Damn this got long...

PROJECT HADEA (18+) by @nyehilismwriting - Play as the best elite operative that secret government organization Scytha Industries has; a title indicated by the hyper-advanced AI module currently living in your head. An AI module that is coveted by many and going for billions on the black market. Good thing nobody knows about it, right? Not that they’d be able to take it from you anyway, what with your skillset. At least, that’s what you think. Hopefully there won’t be any pesky planetary invasions or morally questionable strangers with a surgical compass anytime soon!

THE BASTARD OF CAMELOT by @llamagirl28 - Play as Mordred, bastard child of King Arthur and Morgana that almost nobody knows about. With a dark, mysterious prophecy hanging over your head, will you wind up bringing Camelot to its knees, or will you prove the people (and the prophecy) wrong?

Five years have passed since then, and when your father is assassinated, the entire kingdom is thrown into turmoil. Will you be able to fight in a new war when you haven’t even recovered from the last one? And will you manage to be the guiding hand your younger sister needs to successfully rule? @fromtheashesweriseif , where the ROs are the same as MC or NB, and the parents who are all transgender. It really makes you discover something new and experience!

@ingenio-academy-if who MC gender is set as agender, love love the concept!

@jaunefleurwrites , ‘A world without you’. It really brings out the emotions, and I really loved that we played as a 'sick' MC, it made me view someone else's perspective, which helped me a lot to understand someone.

@scabiosa-if Monsters. Yeah. But for me it means to not “judge a book by its cover”, the appearance won't show how the character will act with you. It's like a box. You need to open it to see what truly is inside. Also @fell-star-if !!

@obesericewrites angst. One of the RO has a child. I loved this, just.. I love it. This IF is emotional, yet at the same time it reminds me of a family? ...It's going to hurt. have mercy

@sinners-if Also is to ‘not judge a book by it's cover’. Yeah, Grey may be 'cold' at first, but that's totally normal in my opinion. You both are strangers, maybe more as time will pass, you'll get to know Grey and Grey will be able to know you. Everyone has a soft spot for somebody, but you need to earn that place, it isn't for granted, and can be easily lost. Unless you want Grey to go to prison LOL revenge!

@lilac-den where MC isn't good with people (kinda?). MC doesn't have many friends, and will have to learn to interact more with people. As an antisocial, I got easily obsessed reading this IF! Oli though is a good friend! Gives MC some advice to get lai-

There was this IF I played where MC was part of a tribe that would raid villages and one of the ROs was an Orc(can’t remember his name). They ended up getting and island to live on due to an agreement and allowed one of the slaves they set free after a raid to live with them.

Anyone know what I’m talking about or am I babbling? 🥲

What to play while we're waiting for touchstarved Recommendations:

1. Chronicles of Tal'Dun: The Remainder If you are going to pick just one game to play from this list, let it be Chronicles of Tal'Dun: The Remainder. This title deserves so much more attention. The game is a mystery in which you are trying to uncover the story of two magi trapped in a tower after a failed ritual.

It is a more challenging read than I am used to from visual novels. On my first playthrough, I was scrambling to understand anything, and quite intentionally so. The MC has amnesia and is just as confused as the player is. Each round reveals new pieces of the story and after a few times, I was starting to connect the dots. It is a very satisfying experience with elements of detective games. The visuals and soundtrack give it also a very unique atmosphere: beautiful and haunting at the same time.

2.A date with death But like I said, Chronicles of Tal'Dun is a bit more demanding. If you are like me and have precious little brain cells to spare, you might want to play "a date with death" instead. A date with Death is a chat simulator in which you tease the Grim Reaper until he falls in love with you. Guys, this game is so much fun! And genuinely funny, too. I had a huge smile on my face the whole time I was playing.

The writers give off the vibes of being very online, so you people should feel right at home. And some of the dialogue choices are downright deranged.

3.Noblesse Oblige

Noblesse Oblige is an interactive Gothic romance novella. Unlike the other titles, there are no visuals or any soundtrack. The MC has been hired as a conversation partner for a lonely aristocrat and thus has to move into a crumbling mansion.

If you are not used to interactive fiction the lack of visuals and the overall presentation might be a bit off-putting, but if you can get past it it is very well worth it.

Do you have any if recommendation?

Ooh! I have really, really bad memory(!!) but these are current faves that I have played/replayed recently that I can think of. A lot of the authors are also THE BEST HUMAN BEINGS EVER. So, double recommendation.

I probably missed a bunch out, so take this as a non-exhaustive list! In no particular order:

(Edit: Added some descriptions but yeah I got a little unhinged so I'm sorry nothing makes sense or if the quality of the write-up went down over time/did not actually give you any useful info)

WIPs with demos

Citadel, @bouncyballcitadel (I think of all the IFs on this list, this one makes me sweat the most. And I've said it once and I'll say it again: the dialogue is so snappy and well-written, and characters are SO DAMNED LOVEABLE.)

Infamous, @infamous-if (I've been manifesting Band/Musician IFs for the longest time, and then this popped up! I've even played Choice of a Rockstar, that's how desperate I was... Anyway, this is legions better than that. Angsty ex routes are my kryptonite, and Seven is just. Inevitable.)

Defiled Hearts: The Barbarian, @defiledheartsblog (I went into this wanting something juicy and fun/historical—and it's all of those things, but I didn't expect it to be so damned funny, too. The ROs are all impeccable.)

Raiders of the Caravan and Apartment 3-3, @leftski-if (A'ight listen, fantasy slice-of-life is my fave genre, and these are IT. Like, everything I never knew I needed in my life, and SO cozy/wholesome, with a cast of characters that I want to befriend in real life.)

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: An Affair of the Heart @doriana-gray-games (First off, the customization in this game is INSANE, and the branching too. I've replayed a couple of times and the little variations I discover each time just blows my mind. Secondly, it's so funny and written so well. Ngl I'm not a Sherlock fan but that's just testament to how amazing this IF is.)

When Life Gives You Lemons, @when-life-gives-you-lemonssss (Modern slice-of-life with an adorable kid, a bunch of hot ROs, CC. Hill's humor, what can I say?)

Golden @milaswriting (Really interesting world-building, one of the coolest fictional cities I've read in an IF, AND I'm obsessed with the ROs, in particular K de la Renta. Also Mila is such an awesome writer, I'm beyond excited for @beyondthegame.)

A Tale of Crowns @ataleofcrowns (This game is beautiful, polished, and SO exciting. Honestly, it looks like the kind of game created by a whole-ass game studio and would cost $50 to buy, it's that good. I really got swept up by this IF—probably played it all in one go.)

Wayfarer @idrellegames (Love the game mechanics of this one, and the visuals. Probably controversial, but I like the D&D / random dice effect. And I also like the fact that it feels like an old-school RPG.)

Chop shop @losergames (The premise is all I needed to be sold, really—I'd always wanted to buy GTA as a kid but my parents were like NO WAY. Anyway, this IF did not disappoint, and let me live all my childhood dreams.)

Edit: AHH! How could I forget, one of my recent faves, Folksaga @folksaga-if (Lush atmospheric writing, super unique premise—norse mythology, plus I'm head over heels for Katla).
