Day 4 Witch
Fiddling with a loose tooth inside of his mouth, Kabuto followed closely with Mother Nonou as he and the other children make their way through the busy streets and stalls of the upcoming Kangetsu no Yube: Kyoto Full Moon Viewing Festival in the village where everyone gathers around the Konoha lake to enjoy the offered free treats, toys, and all sorts of wonderful displays of stall games and music. It's even heard that there was going to be a rather large extravagant theater on a large boat in the middle of the lake as well.
Wearing a rather faded looking green and white yukata and wearing a bracelet on his wrist that had the Orphanage's phone number and address in case if he got lost. He stays with the other children as they make their way to the lake, though despite that they just arrived at the place, the first thing that the adults do is to make sure to secure a nice spot before all of the available ones are taken. Nonou hopes that there is a spot big enough for her, Keiri, Kanpu and the other children to put their picnic blankets so that they can have a good view of the theater and enjoy the moon's reflection on the lake after the theater play is over.
Thankfully, they found a good spot on the grass edge of a slanted ground close to the lake, and also away from the bright lights of the stalls The slanted ground is also perfect so that the children can lay or sit if they're not going to eat anything.
Kabuto stares at one of the more prettier stalls about selling handmade hair ornaments while the adults have already finished setting up the picnic blankets on the ground. Urushi in his favorite orange yutakata walks up to Kabuto and he pats at Kabuto's head a bit too hard just to get his attention. "So much for you helping, we had to do everything on our own!"
The boy pouts as he rubs the top of his head, "Mother told me that I didn't need to help out, just to stay close to you guys and not wander off."
Urushi sighs as he puts his hand on his forehead, "Yeah, but you should've still offered to help! Don't you know anything about adults? They tell you to not help them with chores or setting things up, but deep down they actually wanted you to. Dummy!"
Kabuto's head lowered, his body tensed, and as his lips straightened to a slight frown, his tongue pressed against the loose tooth again, "I didn't know that, I'm sorry."
Urushi turns his back at Kabuto as he shrugs, not much they can do anyways since the picnic table is already set up. "Just be more aware of things and read the room next time. Now come on, while you were daydreaming, the other kids got first pickings on the colors of the handheld fans so hurry up before they take all of the cool patterned ones!"
Before the boy could hurry ahead, he frowns as he stops in his tracks, "Urushi... I have to go to the bathroom." Urushi then points at the lake, "Just go on the lake! No one is going to see and there's not many people around!"
Kabuto shakes his head, "I can't do that, it's number two..."
"Seriously?!" Urushi whined as he shoulders slump and lets his head hang. He points at the building with the purple crescent moon posters and flag on it, "That place as a bathroom nearby, just go there and come back when you're done. And stop fiddling with that loose tooth of yours! Mother told you to cut it out and let it fall on it's own."
And at that, he'll hurry to go get the toys and the fans. And since despite his blunt attitude, Urushi plans to get one of Kabuto's favorite color and he'll get it for him when he comes back.
The white haired child nods as he hurries to the direction where Urushi pointed and while passing through the people, the lights, and the music till he finds the public restroom and he heads inside of it.
After he was done and he exits the bathroom, he thought about returning to the picnic, but a certain black stall with bones, crystals, and talisman seals littered around it. A hunched over person in a black robe with feathers and tassels around the edges of the hood beckons him over, their pale tattooed hand could be seen as it slips out of the sleeves of the hood.
Overcome with curiosity, he looks back at the direction of the picnic and then back at the stall, he's not going to take long. As soon as he sees what items and things that are there, he'll simply head back. He hurriedly walks over to the shady looking stand and his eyes meet the figure under the hood.
The figure pulls back the hood to reveal her face to him. An extremely aged old woman with mysterious tattoos on her face and hands, her skin looked exactly like that of the bark of a tree, her teeth are also looked worn from age except for the two front teeth that were slightly larger than the others, and her grey/white hair hung from both sides of her face, and the way they're shaped, they looked like a rabbit with floppy ears. What disturbed him the most were her yellow eyes and her closed hands that looked and in the shape of rabbit feet with claws.
"Welcome, little one. You are right to stop by here, I can see in your eyes that you have a kind heart but I can also see that it also hungers to sate it's curiosity. This stall... carries many trinkets, talismans, and charms that no other place has. I can also do a bit of fortune telling for a price." She offers Kabuto the necklaces, bracelets, and good luck charms that hung over the little displays. All were extremely beautiful in Kabuto's eyes. If he was rich, he would've loved to spoil Nonou with many jewels and nice things.
What caught his eye the most is the one charm that was hanging on the top of the stall, it had a Baku pattern on it that looked rather peaceful and surrounded by flowers. The old woman noticed and she points at the charm, "You want that one? That is a baku charm that helps the wearer have the most restful sleep as long as they hang it near or over their bed. You look rather healthy for someone so young to have sleep problems, is there someone you know who would need it?"
Kabuto's mind comes to Nonou having to stay up at long hours at the time, looking over the paperwork, inventory and at one point. She even shouted "Stop it!" when she woke up from her nap, looking so terrified that it worried the child. And it's been that way for two weeks and he can see the bags that are forming under her eyes.
"I do, but I also am curious if you have anything that can also increase wealth and protection too. I... don't have any money on me. But I can ask my mother if they have some with them."
She waved her hand and she shakes her head, "Oh that won't be necessary, child. I could give you these three charms for the price of one, but there is something that you can give me in return."
Kabuto blinked as he tilts his head, "Really, but what do I have on me that you would want?"
The old woman's crooked bony claw reached over to stroke at Kabuto's bangs for a moment, "White hair... you boy are special. Just like red hair, this unique trait means that your chakra is not only exceptionally special, but your entire body as well. Especially your bones. Your youth makes the entire thing just perfect and ripe for recipes."
The boy held his breath as he couldn't keep his eyes off of her beady ones as he stays perfectly still. Like a baby rabbit that is trembling underneath the claws of an owl. "What I want from you is... if you could give me some of your blood, a body part, or even some of your fat and I'll give you whatever it is from this stall that you would like."
His tongue instantly pushes at the loose tooth in his mouth and he thinks, "Something doesn't feel right. I should be heading back to the stall since this is too weird..."
"What is wrong with your mouth, child? Are you hurt there?" The old woman questioned as she leaned forward with interest, and that distracts Kabuto from leaving. "Oh, no. I'm okay. I just have a loose tooth that's been bothering me."
"Ahahaha!" She cackled joyfully, "Is that so? I like to make a deal with you, I can give you two of the above seals in return for that tooth! So that there won't be of need of giving up "something else" on your person! Not a bad deal eh?"
"My... tooth? What's so special about my tooth?" Kabuto asked with a worried look.
"Did you hear me mention how the bones of the white haired individuals are special and can make the best medicines and powerful spells? Even something as small as a tooth can be very important to someone who knows how to properly use them. You have healing magic in your bones, your blood, your entire being is the perfect ingredient that can make the most finest spells there is." She informed him without even caring how completely insane the explanation is.
Kabuto thinks about it for a moment, and then he agrees to her conditions. If these seals are as good as she says they are, then it must be worth it if money is not required to get it. Besides, he is doing this with good intentions and all he wants is for his mother to be alright.
"Then it's settled! Now come closer, I'll be quick to get it out. You won't feel a thing..." With both hands, she rests one hand on the back of Kabuto's head to keep him firm, and the other reaches into his mouth as he points at the loose tooth. And while he did feel pressure from the sudden grip on the tooth, the sudden yank made him shout out in pain as blood now drips from the corner of his mouth. Seizing the opportunity, she grabs an empty small jar and she hands it to him, "Put your mouth over here and let the blood drip down on it! Hurry!"
Being rushed so suddenly and not knowing what was going on, he does what he's told and he lets the blood in his mouth drip and slide into the small jar, though he wonders if it being mixed with his drool would affect it. It doesn't seem so as the woman puts the tooth in a small bag and safely put it away in one of the chests behind her.
"Is this good enough? I accidentally drooled on it." He closes the lid and the small jar only has little blood on it.
The crone takes the jar as she takes a closer look at it and her toothy grin grows wider with a sinister air about it, the tooth had a little bit of flesh on it, perfect! "Indeed child. You truly are a kind and special child. For this, I'll throw in the good health charm along with the other three! 4 for 1 special I can say!" She cackled again as she now prepares the 4 charms that Kabuto asked for and she hands them to him with both hands.
As soon as he takes them, suddenly she takes both of his hands and she holds them firmly but gently. Strangely her hands felt like that of a grandmother who holds her grandchildren's hands and her unsettling eyes turn kind and gentle. "Listen well, Kabuto. Keep the protection charm with you at all times, even carrying it in your pocket will keep evil and bad luck away from you.
The wealth charm, you put it in the place where the money is stored and it will surely increase the longer it stays there.
As for the good health one, put it under the pillow of someone who's either sick or dying and their health will improve overnight.
And you probably remember what to do with the sleep charm as well? Remember these directions. They will serve you well. I surely hope that we will meet again in the future someday."
She lets go of his hands as he pulls them away, "Ma'am, how did you know my name?" Before she could answer him, he felt a hand grab his shoulder and forcibly turn him around and his face meets with Urushi's.
He grabs at his arm tightly and his face was red with anger. "What the hell Kabuto?! Where have you been? Mother has been looking everywhere for you! Didn't I tell you to come back after you went to the bathroom?!"
Kabuto's eyes widen as he almost dropped the charms in his hands. "Umm. I was, but I found this dark stall with these nice charms, talismans and an old lady there..."
Urushi looks behind him and he sees nothing but an empty space. "What stall? I don't see anything. C'mon! You're going to miss the theater if you don't hurry! And what the hell happened to your mouth?"
Kabuto swallows the bit of blood in his mouth and he grimaced at the taste of copper in his mouth, "It... fell out. But I lost it." Urushi shakes his head as he drags Kabuto back to the picnic. "You're so clumsy, c'mon. Let's head back before Keiri gets anymore mad at you than she already is!"
The boy looks back at where he saw the stall and as Urushi said was true, there wasn't anything that he saw there. But he did see something unusual and completely out of place.
A black rabbit with unsettling yellow eyes and floppy ears staring at him before it takes off and disappears into the streets of the festival.
Got inspired by "The VVitch" movie along with the unsettling fact about albinos and witchcraft.
