Top Gun: Maverick Is What The Big Screen Was Built For.
It’s very rare that you see something reminding you just how powerful big screen entertainment can be at its absolute best. EEAAO already gave us one in 2022. I certainly did not expect a second. Much less for it to be a sequel to a 5/10 original.
The original Top Gun is a perfect example of a film that will go down to a certain established audience ( mostly dads) as an undeniable classic. Others will see it as a concentrated blast of 80s machismo. The hilariously obvious homoeroticism on display is the only thing that can ever be considered timeless. Yet 36 years after the original’s release Tom Cruise for all his shenanigans is one of…

Top Gun (1986)
Tumblr media
While Top Gun can, at times, lean towards the formulaic, and feel like a bit of a glorified recruitment video, I found it irresistible. Filled with incredible aerial shots, charismatic actors, a dynamite soundtrack, iconic lines, and memorable characters, it’s no wonder the film has become iconic.
Naval aviator Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise) flies an F-14A Tomcat along with his co-pilot Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards). When they suddenly find themselves at the head of their class, they're allowed to attend "Top Gun" the Navy’s Fighter Weapons School - a place where the best of the best learn to hone their skills and become the finest combat pilots in the world. There, Maverick struggles with his family’s legacy and finds himself a rival in top student Tom “Iceman” Kasansky (Val Kilmer). The instructors admire Maverick's aerial skills but aren't impressed by his reckless behavior, his hot-shot attitude and affinity for rule-breaking. Lucky for him, he catches the eye of Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood (Kelly McGillis), a civilian contractor serving as an instructor at Top Gun.
Most men who call Top Gun their favorite movie are probably doing so for Tom Cruise or the action/training scenes. Cruise has been in so many movies now it’s easy to forget that he didn’t start off as a star; he earned his status in movies like this. The then-24-year-old is effortlessly cool and endlessly charismatic. Even when he’s making sort-of-lame attempts at picking up Charlie, he’s a winner in your book. The shots of him in his patch-covered leather jacket with those shades, riding his motorcycle make you go “I want that”. You like him so much the ace pilot thing is merely the cherry on top of the sundae. Flying is in his blood and you know it’s just a matter of time before everyone else figures it out. You’re happily positioning yourself so you can tell them all “I told you so!”
Is this a realistic portrayal of men preparing for war? I’d argue that it actually is; at least in a pre-combat sense. Each scene of the pilots hanging out on the beach playing volleyball or talking about their scores in the locker rooms shows us that carefree period before reality sets in and you have to consider what being engaged in aerial combat actually means.
In a way, it’s so masculine it becomes homoerotic, or maybe it’s the other way around. Either way, "romantic" is a good way to describe the film. Not only for the way director Tony Scott loves the planes, or for the way he longingly shoots these people as they train, but for the relationship between Maverick and Charlie. So what if you know it’s only a matter of time before they kiss? The important thing is that when you see them on-screen together, you can’t wait for them to become romantically involved. Cruise and McGillis have excellent chemistry and their first date will have you all sorts of steamy afterwards. Good thing we have those training scenes in between for you to cool off!
Top Gun may be a light-as-air fantasy but that’s ok. The soundtrack is excellent, as iconic as every other aspect of the film. The footage of these high-tech flying machines weaving through the air, dipping, and dodging so they can get their sights on their targets - or get away from them - is enthralling. You forget about everything outside of the film thanks to the editing by Billy Weber and Chris Lebenzon. The thought that this was all carefully staged for a shot never crosses your mind as it’s playing.
When I first saw Top Gun, I enjoyed it. I understood its appeal. I’m not sure what’s changed since then because this time? I loved it. Maybe time has made me appreciate the love scenes between the leads, or I have a greater understanding of how difficult a film this must’ve been to shoot, or my taste has evolved. Whatever the reason, Top Gun holds up. (On Blu-ray, June 8, 2022)

'Top Gun: Maverick' Was Well Worth the Wait
‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Was Well Worth the Wait
Movies take a long time to make and bring to the silver screen, but this one took forever to debut thanks to the pandemic and a superstar’s strong desire to ensure it DID NOT debut on streaming. This is also a sequel which comes to us 36 years after the original, and that one was a classic 1980’s flick. Can you make a sequel to an 80’s classic in another decade where things have changed ever so…

Top Gun (1986). As students at the United States Navy's elite fighter weapons school compete to be best in the class, one daring young pilot learns a few things from a civilian instructor that are not taught in the classroom.
It was such a weird thing to watch this back-to-back with Clint Eastwood's Heartbreak Ridge. Released the same year, and both nominated at the 59th Academy Awards, they touch on similar themes of sun-soaked masculinity and patriotism, but it's infinitely more palatable (and successful as a propaganda tool) in Top Gun. I feel like that's a testament not only to the charisma of its star-studded cast, but also to Tony Scott's direction which leans into the fun and the fantasy at practically every turn. It's not really my vibe, but I get it, y'know? 7/10.

The comebacks that are not really the comebacks should be called what? Sure, they are treated as the word I mentioned and I get why some of them earned that moniker. Black Tie White Noise by Bowie was his solo return after many years, yet he did many things since Never Let Me Down. He fronted a band, got married and he became recognized as the rock royalty. However, the 90's didn't understand him somehow, so Black Tie White Noise began a period for him, where he got often mocked for trying too hard for his age. I still think we should refrain from this accusation, he just followed his lead like always. Yes, I'm suggesting we should call the 90's as the best period of his, since he really unleashed himself then.

I am puzzled why this movie is such a hit. It’s definitely not the writing. Could be the score, or celebrity appeal, or the action(which I could not relate to).
Top Gun is a 1986 American action drama film directed by Tony Scott, and produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, in association with Paramount Pictures. The screenplay was written by Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr., and was inspired by an article titled "Top Guns", published in California magazine three years earlier. The film stars Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis, with Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, and Tom Skerritt.

TASK AT HAND:
Tom Cruise has been captured by the North Korean government because of your TRAVEL PLAN. Rescue him
DELIVERABLES:
Okay, we are just kidding. There is no such task today. The only Top Gun that we are looking out for, is YOU.
There won’t be any task today! Have a good night’s sleep. You all deserve it. You need to give it your all from tomorrow!
SLEEP WELL, for one last time.

Best Original and Adapted Screenplays 2023 Oscars
I love the Oscars. No, the Oscars don't represent fan or audience opinions. No shit. This is filmmakers celebrating their own work and success. This is by design. I'm genuinely sick of people getting upset about something that's been true for 95 years. Sorry you're just finding out now. Anyway, sass aside. This is a year of screenplays I'm genuinely fascinated about. I'll leave the full lists at the bottom. This is the first time I've seen sequels get "Adapted' screenplays for being sequels... that's.... weird. Glass Onion and Top Gun: Maverick. I mean fun screenplays but I swear that's a new one on me. And a remake of Ikiru too?! That kinda hurts me.
Other than that I don't have much to say about this category. All Quiet was fine, but nothing to write home about. Don't even know what Women Talking is about so... I'll report back once I've watched all of thee. ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY THO...
I heard about The Banshees of Inisherin through work. Martin McDonagh, the writer, comes from a theater background. I love movies made my theatrical directors and writers. Nearly everything is conveyed through dialogue, and the visual storytelling is just added fluff. And is so often used in interested ways to tell a story. When I realized McDonagh's background I immediately powered up HBO Max and started it up. I really like this movie. So much about the character is conveyed through the acting and dialogue and it's amazing in that way. Two characters sitting around a table or having a pint and talking. I love it so so much. This really taps into my film background. This will no be a movie for everyone since it's an old man movie, but I adore it. Everything Everywhere All at Once kinda came out of nowhere, but the movie very much does with movies what you can't do with other stories with it's visual storytelling. And boy what a ride. Never expected the boys who made Swiss Army Man would be going for an Oscar. It's so awesome and I truly hope they sweep these Oscars. The Fabelmans - Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner coming together to tell an autobiographical movie about Mr Spielberg himself. It's SO RARE to get such a personal story from a truly defining filmmaker. I'm really curious to see where this goes. I haven't enjoyed many of his movies since then, especially Ready Player One and BFG, but this is one that might be a true culmination of his work.
Tár and Triangle of Sadness I only heard about through their nomination. I don't have much to say here - Tár might be worth a watch, sounds very Black Swan. Triangle of Sadness is the one I'm not curious about but I'll still give it a watch.
Best Original Screenplay
The Banshees of Inisherin – Martin McDonagh
Everything Everywhere All at Once – Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert
The Fabelmans – Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner
