We Live in Cairo- June 22, 2019
We Live in Cairo is a musical that just made its world premiere at A.R.T. The show follows six college students who joined the 2011 revolution in Cairo, Egypt where they overthrew their president who was in power for thirty years. Through music, photography, and art, the students are able to express their opinions and give insight into the revolution. Here is the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5yt0rF_Pn8&list=LLZ_RMSOry8Qo78TfC71-Nng&index=5
Amir and Hany are brothers who compose and perform songs about the revolution. Layla is a photographer and photographs the protests in Tahrir Square and is Amir’s girlfriend. Karim and Hassan are street artists. Fadwa runs all social media accounts and posts pictures and information on the revolution.
The score written by brothers Daniel and Patrick Lazour is mesmerizing, beautiful, yet intense and unforgettable with lyrics that really demonstrate the ambitions and hopes of the students. The song, Movement sung by Amir and Layla discusses the desire to move away from Cairo and start a life together, yet the love for one’s country intervenes as a love between a Christian man (Amir) and a Muslim woman (Layla) becomes complicated and unacceptable in Cairo. The scene is intimate as Amir and Layla sit on the edge of the stage and pull the audiences’ attention directly into their connection. Here is the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQSgowAgWto&list=LLZ_RMSOry8Qo78TfC71-Nng&index=26&t=0s
The song Tahrir is Now is powerful and provides a triumphant and powerful act one finale. One of my favorite lyrics of the show: “we have cracked the wall of fear and we’ll see it crumble.”
The song Dreaming Words is perhaps the most emotional one of the show since SPOILER ALERT: Amir dies while singing at a protest and Hany returns from law school in New York. Amir reappears as a spirit and sings with Hany about all the accomplishments them and their friends have made, although it’s only dreaming words. :( Their own accomplishment? They released a debut album. Here is a snippet of it:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pf17XSSKvlg&list=LLZ_RMSOry8Qo78TfC71-Nng&index=7
The show is intimate and makes you feel a part of it as projections of the revolution comes out across the ceiling of the theater. The story is powerful and questions what happens after you fight so hard in a revolution to just receive a new person in power who you also disagree with. How far does one go for the love of their country?
The acting was also phenomenal and the cast was amazing.
I really enjoyed this show and loved how each character had an artistic outlet to express themselves. This is a show that deserves more life and exposure so I hope it will continue elsewhere.

The Review: NYTW’s Sing Street
By Ross
In April 2016, director John Carney released a film called Sing Street. It was set in Dublin in the economically challenged 1980’s and it was embraced enthusiastically, for both its joyous optimism and infectious musical charm. With a story written by Carney and Simon Carmody, it achieved an approval…

Brenock OConnor as Conor Jakeim Hart as Larry, members of Sing Street, a 1980s band
“Sing Street” is a stage musical based on the sweet, funny “happy-sad” 2016 Irish movie by writer/director John Carney about a teenager named Conor growing up in Dublin during the economically depressed but musically vibrant 1980s, who forms a band to impress a girl name Raphina. The musical has its pleasures, especially for those nostalgic for the era of made-for-MTV, New Wave synthesized tunes. A talented group of young adult actor-musicians, ages 16 to 25, perform mostly original pastiche songs by Carney and Scottish singer-songwriter Gary Clark, who was part of the 80s scene and continues his hit-making now. But “Sing Street” the stage musical is likely to disappoint anybody who has seen “Sing Street” the movie (which is currently available for viewing online, through IMDB TV, for free.) This comes as something of a surprise given the pedigree of the creative team. Carney has enlisted as the stage musical’s librettist the same playwright, Enda Walsh, who turned Carney’s 2007 Irish movie “Once” into a Tony-winning musical. The show’s scenic and costume designer Bob Crowley won one of his several Tonys for “Once.” The show’s director, Rebecca Taichman, won a Tony for helming “Indecent.” Yet none of them are doing their best work in “Sing Street,” which loses much of the quirkiness of the film, and feels broader and, despite self-consciously minimalist stagecraft,  more commercial — closer to, say, “School of Rock” than “Once.” The change is evident from the get-go. The movie begins with Conor playing the guitar while in the background his parents bicker. He repeats their argument as if their words are lyrics, setting them to music. “If we didn’t share a mortgage, I would leave,” he sings in falsetto imitating what his mother has just said. “Go on and leave any time you like,” he sings absurdly deep-voiced in imitation of his father. It’s hilarious, and also pointed, telling us all we need to know about the tensions in the family before we even meet them, and why a smart boy would want to escape his life through music. There is no such opening scene in the musical. Instead there’s something more artificial. We see Conor (Brenock O’Connor) emerging from a dollhouse, and somebody turning on a radio that is broadcasting an interview with a teenager who says he’s leaving Ireland because there are no jobs. Then we see Conor listening to and trying to play along with a recording of Depeche Mode’s “I Just Can’t Get Enough.” He soon gets the hang of it and is joined by the rest of the cast, playing the song hard-edged, yes, but also professionally — as if they are entertaining a paying audience at a musical, which of course they are. The two “Sing Streets,” movie and musical, tell the same story: Conor, forced to leave a good private school that his family can no longer afford, is sent to the rough-and-tumble school run by the Christian Brothers on Synge Street. From the first day, he’s tormented by the priest in charge, Brother Baxter (Michael Moran), and bullied by an abused classmate Barry (Johnny Newcomb.) He sees Raphina (Zara Devlin) across the street from the school, and bravely goes up to talk to her. She tells him she’s a model; “I almost shot a music video last month.” He then and there invites her to star in the music video of his band. And then seeks out his brand new friend Darren (Max William Bartos) to help him put together a band. Happy-sad lessons in love and life ensue. In the movie – and in Broadway musicals like Bandstand and Gettin The Band Back Together – much of the initial action is the recruitment of the band members, whom we meet one by one and in that way get to know as individuals. But we’ve already seen the band together in the opening number of “Sing Street” the musical, doing the Depeche Mode number, and we never see them recruited, or, in truth, learn much about them as individuals. This is too bad, because the performers are good enough that we want to know them more. The show does better with Conor’s sister Anne (Skyler Volpe) a wit and wise ass who is studying to be an architect, and with his big brother Brendan (Gus Halper), a college drop-out and a shut-in who starts off advising Conor in music and love, and ends up admiring him for his willingness to try to escape. Brendan is given the rousing 11 o’clock number “Go Now,” the main effect of which is to wonder why we didn’t notice him more during the rest of the show. The band, which decides to call itself Sing Street (a pun on the location of their school), spends much of their time making music videos. This kind of begs for there to be projections of the possibly funny fruits of their labor. But the only projection in “Sing Street” is of the Irish Sea, always rolling, never-changing. I know there’s symbolism here – the sea as both come-on and barrier to a more fulfilling life for the Irish characters — but still…. Similarly, there is great humor in Conor and his Sing Street adolescent rockers adapting the makeup and androgynous costumes of each star band of the era as he learns about them from his brother. The movie’s costume designer Tiziana Corvisieri and a 13-member makeup department and costume go whole hog in the kids’ transformations, while the designers of the musical go….piglet? Speaking of animals, there is one thing the musical has that the movie lacks – a live baby rabbit. It doesn’t hop though.

Here is a guide to the Sing Street cast’s original music and other projects in case you’re a fan of Sing Street or if you’re interested in learning more about both Sing Street (musical) and the cast! Since they met in 2019, this cast has been making things together almost nonstop. It’s a very long post so just scroll through and click the links to the songs if you are interested!
Max Bartos (OBC Darren): Max’s biggest musical inspiration is Green Day plus he’s a huge fan of Spring Awakening. His music really reflects his musical favorites and his talent in his album called “Such Is Life” and his single “Playlist of My Life.” You can listen to those anywhere you stream music. Max is also in the process of writing a musical, another album, and he has a podcast called “Clowns ‘R’ Us” where he talks about all things horror! Max also has his own theatrical group who will be putting on a Spring Awakening Concert at the Laurie Beechmen Theatre in NYC on June 17th. Former Sing Street cast mate Skyler Volpe (OBC Anne Lawlor) will be in this concert playing bass in the band. (Tickets are on sale for my many Spring Awakening fans if you’re interested and live in NY!)
Ilan Eskenazi (OBC U/S Conor): has a sensuous song out called “Next to Me” which features the voices and musical talents of himself, along with former Sing Street cast mates Skyler Volpe (OBC Anne Lawlor) and Brendan C. Callahan (OBC Gary). “Next to Me” is available on all streaming platforms.
Skyler Volpe: As mentioned above, Skyler is one of the featured voices in Ilan Eskenazi’s song “Next to Me”. Skyler also plays the bass in an NYC band called “Themme” and also occasionally plays other gigs around New York- a few being with former Sing Street cast mates Gian Perez, Anthony Genovesi, and Sam Poon; and she also sometimes plays at 54 Below. Skyler is also in the Original cast recording of a show called “The Hello Girls” which is really good. That cast recording is streaming on all platforms. Skyler also wrote a play called “One Drop Cool” and is currently working on staging it!
Sam Poon (OBC Eamon): releases music under the name “Spoonuel”. Some popular songs of theirs that I personally like are “B With Me”, and “A Manic Hello”. They also produce music for their girlfriend and fellow DIY music artist Chloe Berry. Both Sam and Chloe constantly have music coming out, and their music can be streamed on all platforms. Sam also produces music for former Sing Street cast mate Brenock O’Connor, and sometimes plays gigs with other Sing Street alumni such as Gian Perez (OBC & Boston Kevin), Anthony Genovesi (OBC & Boston Declan), and Skyler Volpe. Sam and Brenock’s most recent song together is called “Macho”.
Anthony Genovesi: is a drummer who plays gigs in NYC with many with his former Sing Street cast mates’ bands such as Gian Perez, Jakeim Hart (OBC Larry), and Sam Poon. Anthony also has his own song out titled “Swim ‘Til You Die”.
Sophie Hearn (OBC Raphina U/S): has a beautiful song out titled “Wasn’t I” streaming on all platforms.
Gian Perez: Is in a band called “Office Hours” and also in a band called “SU$HI” with Anthony Genovesi. He also releases music as a solo artist under the name “No Love For Cowboy”. He is also still acting in theatre and TV.
Brenock O’Connor (OBC Conor Lawlor): is in England currently playing gigs and releasing his own music under the name “McGovern”. Brenock often collaborates with his former Sing Street cast mates, especially Sam Poon. Brenock also has one song out with former Sing Street cast mate Michael Lepore (OBC Conor, Eamon U/S & Boston Gary). Their song is called “When Your Lips Disappear”. Brenock just recently released an EP titled “Maybe Everything Could Be OK” and the bitter-sweet music video for one of the songs “Let Me Know When It’s Yesterday” features nostalgic footage of fellow former Sing Street cast mates Brendan C. Callahan, Ilan Eskenazi, Anthony Genovesi, Jakeim Hart, Gian Perez, Sam Poon, and Skyler Volpe.
Michael Lepore: has a few songs released, one with former cast mate Brenock O’Connor as mentioned above, and one of his own titled “Tongue Twisted”. Both songs are streaming everywhere.
Zara Devlin (OBC Raphina), Johnny Newcomb (OBC Barry), and Gus Halper (OBC Brendan Lawlor) do not have any music out- but Zara is still doing theatre and film in Ireland, and Gus is still doing TV and film as well.
ALSO: Brendan C. Callahan, Ilan Eskenazi, Jakeim Hart, Gian Perez, Brenock O’Connor, Sam Poon, and Skyler Volpe were in a band together (before Covid) called “The Kings of Positivity” and there are fun videos on YouTube of their performances and one-take covers.

I’m not a big artist but I was listening to Brown Shoes and the lyric “your up will be down, just hanging around in gravity boots” is always so funny to me and I always visualize it very literally so I decided to draw it. Thought it would be cute to have Brother Baxter angrily floating above the boys while they point and laugh and stare with awe. I was gonna make it a comic but again, I’m not really an artist. But I’ll add some dialogue or anyone else can if they think of something!
So far all I have is this:
Conor: “Look at that, boys, in gravity boots just like we wrote!”
Also another inspiration for drawing this is from Gary’s little moment before the song that lives in my head rent free. It’s the turning point for his character after being the cautious, good student the whole play. Just before Brown Shoes, he stand up on a chair, dedicates the song, and drops the mic, yelling:
“To every Christian Brother who’s been over us, and to anyone who ever tries to stop a kid from living!”
Another reason I made this is because there’s a sad lack of Sing Street musical/movie fan art. I’ve done my duty now. It’s just a sketch and it’s not great, but nevertheless, enjoy!
(The characters I drew are from the NYTW version, so the face claims in order from left to right are Brendan C. Callahan, Brenock O’Connor, Max Bartos, Sam Poon, and Jakeim Hart, and of course, Martin Moran as Brother Baxter)

Dreamcasting Broadway: SWEENEY TODD
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, this may seem like a strange cast at first. And it kinda is. But that’s mainly because of the crazy concept I have for this production. I’ve been obsessed with Eleri Ward’s ‘Sufjan on Sondheim’ series on YouTube, with her version of the Johanna quintet being played on loop while thinking of possibilities for this cast. With that concept of folk-inspired orchestrations, I tried to think of actors with unique voices to match the vibe. So imagine a stripped back, folksy take on this story and this cast will make a little more sense.
Dreamcasting Broadway: Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
