'Cillian Murphy has said his new film, Small Things Like These, uncovers a dark chapter in recent Irish society and that he was "emotionally knocked out" by the story of a Magdalene Laundry in smalltown Ireland in the 1980s.
The film is an adaptation of Claire Keegan's bestseller of the same name and became the first Irish film to open the Berlin International Film Festival on Thursday.
Murphy stars opposite Zara Devlin, Emily Watson, Eileen Walsh, and Michelle Fairley in the adaptation of Wexford author Keegan's 2021 Booker Prize-nominated novel and is also among the producers.
According to the synopsis, the film takes place in an Irish town over Christmas in 1985, "when devoted father and coal merchant Bill Furlong (Murphy) discovers startling secrets kept by the convent in his town, along with some shocking truths of his own.
"The film reveals truths about Ireland's Magdalene Laundries - horrific asylums run by Roman Catholic institutions from the 1820s until 1996, ostensibly to reform 'fallen young women’."
Speaking to RTÉ at the Berlinale, Murphy said: "It’s a lot to take on, it’s certainly a collective trauma we’re all processing. My generation and an older generation, it is still something we are trying to figure out.
"Books and art and film can be a balm to that wound more than government reports or academic papers.
"I think above all the film has to entertain and you have to be involved in it emotionally, but if it asks a few questions, that’s a bonus."
Small Things Like These tells a very Irish story, but Murphy doesn't see that as a barrier to the film attracting a wider audience.
"Its universality lies in its specificity," he said.
"We showed it in New York and LA and people responded in the same way and the response we're having here in Berlin is the same. There are very raw emotions to the film that people respond to, and the fact that it’s located in Irish society is no barrier to it."
Small Things Like These, which aims to be in cinemas this Autumn, reunites Murphy with Peaky Blinders director Tim Mielants, and the script has been written by Murphy's long-time collaborator, playwright Enda Walsh.
Speaking about how the project came about, the Cork actor said: "I love Claire Keegan’s work, all of her work, and I read the story quite early. It knocked me out emotionally, I thought it was beautiful and then I began to think of it as a film slowly, then I brought it to Alan, brought it to Tim and then Enda. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck became involved and then Eileen and it gathered momentum really quickly."'

You know what I was just thinking? They spent a lot of years in exile just to find out their homeland was wrecked by Belial and Zara. And when they finally get everything back, Hunter wants to explode it. I wonder what would've happened if the Devlins found out about Idris before. Would they confront Belial? Would they go after the Institutes? Would they try to explode Magnus' loft since the Consul lived there? Would they find about the Nephilim illness and create their own covid to exterminate them?
I mean #leaveIdrisaloneffs2022
Babygirl, you are NOT ready for tomorrow's chapter.

I think I'm back in the dream I think I'm back on the ceiling
[I.D.: A set of two different images of Conor and Raphina from the Broadway musical Sing Street. Conor is a white man in his early 20s with short fluffy dark hair. Raphina is a white woman in her 20s with long curly dark hair. They both look into each other's eyes, slightly smiling. There's a telephone booth behind them lit inside with a soft blue light. Raphina wears headphones. The second image illustrates Raphina, alone, dancing to the music that she listens to through her headphones. Her arms are outstretched, she holds a player in one of her hands. Her other hand reaches a string in the air. There's a lot of space around her lit by warm yellow light. End I.D.]

There may be spoilers ...
OK, delayed gratification is not my thing. I watched it. 😁 Go no further if you haven't, because it is a treat.
I was fine, enjoying the charming funny bits, the banter with the mechanic, the scene where her then boyfriend reveals the car for the first time (which is a souffle of lovely) and vaguely disliking the usurping new husband. I got past 'Here' with my shit intact, and then they have the talk and he says 'I don't think you can control things like that' and I was suddenly a mess. So that's it, who needs Tom Burke. 😉
I think they opened with the right episode this time. I honestly can't see s.2 get much better than this.

'On Thursday, the Berlin Film Festival will kick off with the world premiere of Small Things Like These, starring Cillian Murphy, who also produces, and marking the first time an Irish movie opens the Berlinale. In the exclusive first-look at the 1985-set drama, Murphy’s family man Bill Furlong comes face-to-face with Emily Watson’s formidable Sister Mary whose convent is concealing dark and disturbing secrets.
Also starring Eileen Walsh, Michelle Fairley and Zara Devlin, the story plays out in the weeks leading up to Christmas 1985. Bill, a devoted husband, father and coal merchant living in the traditional Irish town of New Ross in County Wexford, is facing his busiest season. During his delivery rounds, he discovers that the local convent is in fact a cruel institution that takes in so-called ‘fallen girls and women.’ His reaction to this discovery forces him to confront some hard truths about the convent, his hometown — and his own life.
Small Things Like These is directed by Tim Mielants (Peaky Blinders) and adapted by Enda Walsh (Hunger, Disco Pigs) from Claire Keegan’s acclaimed Booker Prize shortlisted novel. Keegan’s short story Foster was previously adapted for the screen as The Quiet Girl which debuted in Berlin in 2022 and went on to become the first Irish-language film nominated for an International Feature Oscar.
Of Small Things Like These, Murphy says he “fell in love with the book” and “very much wanted to play the part. And so, I thought, well the best thing to do then is to see if Claire will give us the rights and to see if we can put a team together.”
That team includes Artists Equity which financed the film after Murphy met Matt Damon while working on Oppenheimer. Producers are Murphy and his longtime collaborator and partner at Big Things Films, Alan Moloney, along with Artists Equity’s Damon and Drew Vinton; and Catherine Magee. Exec producers are Artists Equity’s Ben Affleck, Kevin Halloran and Michael Joe.
FilmNation Entertainment is repping sales on Small Things Like These which is an Artists Equity, Big Things Films, Screen Ireland, Wilder Films production.'

Meet the Kids Who’ll Make ‘Sing Street’ Rock (New York Times)
Tumblr media
For “Sing Street,” though, they needed kids who looked like kids and could play pop-rock songs by Carney and the Scottish musician Gary Clark. The group they put together included the English actor and “Game of Thrones” alum Brenock O’Connor, who portrays Conor, and Zara Devlin, an actor from Northern Ireland, as Raphina — along with a clutch of affable and energetic actor-musicians, one of whom is still in high school.
