Seasonal Refresh: Revamping Your Home For Springtime
Tumblr media
6 Ways to Spruce up Your Home for Spring
The longer days and warmer temperatures might entice you to spend your time outside, but before you do, there are a few things to take care of inside! (And some outdoor items for those truly spectacular spring days.)
Declutter before you start cleaning, then designate boxes for donation, garage sale, or garbage.
Wash windows, sliding door tracks, and overlooked surfaces (like baseboards, door frames, walls, light fixtures, under furniture and appliances, and refresh window treatments.
Deep clean your bedroom—you spend a lot of time there sleeping. Now is a great time to rotate and flip mattresses, wash mattress pads, blankets, comforters, bed skirts, and area rugs. Don’t forget to clean your pillows, too. You can send them to a pro, hang them outside to air dry, or even freshen them in the dryer on a low or no-heat setting.
Transition your wardrobe - streamline your closet by putting warm-weather clothing at the forefront. Pack away gloves, hats, scarves, and boots. Be sure to label everything for the fall.
If you haven’t done so, do a safety check on smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Check your fire extinguishers and make sure you know how to use them.
Do an exterior home refresh: plant flowers in beds or movable pots, lay fresh mulch, and power wash the siding, windows, sidewalks, and driveway. Clear rain gutters, repaint your front door, clean off the outdoor furniture, or better yet, after all that hard work, treat yourself to some updated decor.
With just a few days of elbow grease, your home will be ready for a summer of sun, fun, and much less cleaning.

This weekend I had the priveledge & pleasure of dancing to great music with beautiful women. The most beautiful women in the place. These ladies are much more than a pretty face & a sexy body. My point is those ladies would never call themselves beautiful and that is unfortunate because they truly are. #speakbeauty #texasmusicscene #2step #jamierichards #saturdaynightdance (at Rockin' RE)

D.C’s Best Picnic Spots!
Tumblr media
Where to go, what to bring
Dining al fresco in D.C. doesn’t have to break the bank. In fact, if you want to avoid making reservations, waiting in line and eating elbow-to-elbow with strangers, planning a picnic is a great alternative. There are so many scenic (Instagram-worthy) spots to throw down a blanket and enjoy this simple and charming tradition. Here we’re sharing some of the best places in D.C. for a picnic – as well as some tips to make your picnic pleasant for all involved.
Hauling your provisions
Although traditional picnic baskets are cute, your best bet is to purchase a modern, sensible picnic backpack since activities in D.C. typically involve walking some distance from your car or taking the metro and hauling a heavy hand-held basket will be cumbersome. Check Amazon for some great options. You can find backpacks with comfortable padded straps and efficiently organized compartments for cutlery, plates, napkins, a cooler, a blanket and more. You might want to invest in two backpacks and share the load with a friend.
Picnic food ideas
Reimagine the ordinary sandwich, chips, and soda. Take it up a notch and serve baguettes; or take it up two notches with quiche, charcuterie boards, fancy salads, and refreshing cocktails. Make sure most of your meal consists of finger foods (easy to eat) so you don’t have to worry about multiple plates/cutlery. And don’t forget dessert!
Another culinary option: order food-to-go from your favorite D.C. restaurant. You’ll still need a method to transport it to your picnic destination, but letting someone else prepare and pack the meal will involve less work on your end.
Don’t forget to pack
Sunscreen
Anti-bacterial wipes
Wet naps
Garbage bags
Bug spray
Places to picnic
We’re providing some tried-and-true venues here, but there are so many more possibilities. Wherever your destination, make sure you learn about parking options (or Metro stops) in advance. Also, do a little research to make sure your spot is picnic friendly and open for visitors.
Tumblr media
Between Constitution and Independence Ave., SW
Known as “America’s Front Yard,” this iconic spot is punctuated by the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument and flanked by Smithsonian museums. The long, grassy swath is often crowded, but people-watching can be just as fun as gazing at the patriotic landmarks.
Tumblr media
1100 Ohio Drive SW
Located at the southern tip of East Potomac Park between the main branch of the Potomac River and the Washington Channel, Hains Point offers beautiful views of the Potomac River, the Anacostia River and the Washington Channel. It’s an ideal spot for bird watching and also has a playground and restrooms. A four-mile loop allows you to take in the many different species of cherry trees while hiking or biking.
Tumblr media
Located on the Potomac River and accessible by George Washington Memorial Parkway
This 90-acre island is a memorial to America’s 26th president and features miles of trails through wooded uplands and swampy bottomlands. Ranger-led programs are available.
Tumblr media
16th Street and W Street NW
A spectacular cascading fountain, reflecting pool, statues, and more will be your backdrop at Meridian Hill Park (also known as Malcolm X Park). If you’re there on a Sunday afternoon, you’ll most likely be able to watch a full-blown weekly drum circle party starting at 3 p.m., a tradition that began in the 1960s.
The Yards Park (and Dancing Fountains)
355 Water Street SE
This public space along the Anacostia River has gardens, water features, a dog run, a boardwalk and a shaded overlook.
Tumblr media
Wisconsin and K St., NW
This 10-acre park curves along the Potomac River shoreline and includes a large fountain, benches, overlooks and large open lawn areas. A labyrinth with geometric turns encourages quiet contemplation as you wind your way from the outer edge to the center. Stadium-like steps leading to the river edge are a favorite place for picnickers.
Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden
Independence Ave. SW and 7th St. SW
The sculpture garden is free to enter, offering more than 30 works of contemporary and modern art displayed year-round — and picnics are permitted.

Home Decor in 2024. What’s Hot & What’s Not?
Tumblr media
Pink’s out. Peach is in.
Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2024 is soft and subtle “Peach Fuzz,” replacing last year’s vibrant “Viva Magenta.” Pantone is recognized globally as a leading source of color expertise.
“In seeking a hue that echoes our innate yearning for closeness and connection, we chose a color radiant with warmth and modern elegance,” says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute™.
If you’re looking to revamp your space, consider PANTONE 13-1023 and its complementary colors: everything from creamy, brown and tan neutrals to shades of teal, lavender and mint green. Note: gray is not listed. For those who went wild with gray or greige tones during that trend, you might want to roll up your sleeves and buy a new paint roller.
What’s out?
Say goodbye to Barbiecore (think pink). What else is losing favor? Here’s a quick rundown of trends that seem to be going by the wayside in home decor:
Sliding barn doors (Let’s face it – they don’t even do a great job of blocking light, smells, and sounds.)
White-on-white kitchens
Extremes – whether that means bare minimalism or over-the-top Grand Millennial
Heavy industrial style
What’s in?
Back kitchens
AKA butler’s pantry or scullery, this separate space keeps secondary or backup items hidden from site, tidying up the more public area. Here you can house additional refrigeration and freezing, warming drawers, wine storage, lesser-used mechanical devices, formal entertaining dishes and cutlery, etc. Appliance garages have been around for a while, but they seem to be gaining popularity as another way to streamline kitchens.
Bespoke bedrooms and bathrooms
Behind the scenes, highly personalized spaces offer homeowners comfort and creative freedom. Feel free to layer these rooms with your favorite monogrammed fabrics, artwork, family photos, and heirlooms. Make it meaningful.
Casual luxury
It may sound like an oxymoron, but  luxury doesn’t have to mean formal. Rather than opulent and imposing, choose comfortable, lived-in furniture that is still beautiful and lavish.
Bold wall treatments
Add depth and personality to walls by treating them as large canvases. Incorporate wallpaper, paneling, 3D wall coverings, stone or wood features, decorative molding. This is a take on dopamine decor – which continues to be popular – creative touches that make you feel good when you walk into a room.
Separated spaces
Demolishing interior walls to create all-in-one living/working/playing areas is seeing a bit of a reversal. Delineating spaces by incorporating walls that still have good flow through the use of doorways and openings allows for rooms with purpose and intention.
Mixed metals
This may come as a relief. Chrome, brass, black, copper, bronze – all can be used when harmoniously paired. Trying to keep up with what’s in shouldn’t mean having to change out plumbing fixtures annually!
Mixed materials
Kitchen countertops don’t have to be one solid matchy-matchy mass. Add interest and dimension to this horizontal space. Consider a mix of materials for visual, tactile and utilitarian variety – natural wood with granite, or quartz with sleek stainless steel.
Outdoors in
Windows seem to be taking center stage – becoming bigger and bigger. The view outside is more of a focal point than an after-thought. Biophilic design is also a way to get the feeling of nature inside your dwelling by adding large indoor plants and natural wood and stone finishes.
Mud-laundry rooms
Combining a laundry with a mudroom is a space-efficient idea. Storage components can serve double-duty: hooks, cabinets, cubbies and drawers.
Sustainability
Cheap, mass-produced furniture is becoming increasingly unpopular. People are gravitating toward quality pieces that are higher end and/or repurposed for a lesser environmental footprint.
A word of caution
Before you revamp your space with all the latest trends, carefully consider which ones truly work for you. If you’re thinking about selling your home soon, reach out to me and let's talk about what changes will give you the biggest bang for your buck.

The 2024 Total Solar Eclipse Spectacular: What You Need To Know
Tumblr media
A Total Eclipse
On April 8th, a unique celestial event will unfold, offering a rare opportunity for many Americans to witness a total solar eclipse. This remarkable phenomenon, occurring just seven years after the last one visible in our hemisphere, is a testament to the awe-inspiring wonders of our universe. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon crosses completely in front of the sun, causing the skies to go dark for a few moments.
What makes this eclipse special?
All eclipses are cool, to say the least, but this one will be a little different than the last. The path of totality is the direction and path the moon will travel where viewers will be able to see the moon totally block out the sun. Compared to 2017, this eclipse will have a much wider path of totality and will cover more populated areas, meaning more people will be able to see it. However, even if you’re not in the path of totality, 99% of those in the United States will still be able to see at least some of the eclipse this year.
The period of totality, the length of time viewers will be able to see the moon block the sun, lasted around 2 minutes and 42 seconds in 2017. This year’s eclipse will be one of the longest on record, with the totality reaching up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds in some areas.
This year's heightened solar activity will also allow viewers to see streamers and prominences, which look like bright pink loops, coming off the sun.
Fun ways to watch the eclipse:
April 8th is a Monday, and depending on where you live, most of us will be at work during the eclipse. That doesn’t mean you can’t take a break and watch this incredible event! Just make sure to do so safely with proper eye equipment. If you have the time to plan, check out the path of totality and make a whole day of it!
Go camping - Get away from the crowds and spend the day in nature. The entire eclipse will last a few hours, so take the day, grab some chairs and snacks, and enjoy!
Travel - If you are one of the lucky few who can easily travel to a city within the path of totality, go! Austin, Texas, Cleveland, Ohio, and Niagara Falls are directly within the path and will have the best viewing potential. Click here for a full map.
You don’t have to be an astronomy enthusiast to appreciate the spectacular event that will be this year’s solar eclipse. Grab some safety glasses, block an hour on your calendar, and enjoy one of space’s coolest events!

8 Reasons Spring Is THE Season For Buying And Selling
Tumblr media
The spring market is often considered the best time to buy or sell a home for several reasons. Here are some key factors that contribute to the appeal of the spring season for home buyers and sellers:
Curb Appeal and Better Weather:
During spring, properties showcase their best features as gardens bloom and the landscape looks more appealing.
Longer days and better weather conditions make it easier for homebuyers to explore neighborhoods and attend open houses without the challenges of winter weather.
Increased Inventory:
Sellers often list their homes in spring, leading to more available properties.
A more extensive selection gives buyers more options and the opportunity to find a home that meets their preferences and needs.
Optimal Timing for Families:
Families with school-age children prefer to move during the summer to minimize disruption to their children’s education.
Buying a home in spring allows for a closing date in late spring or early summer, aligning with the optimal moving period for families.
Market Activity and Competition:
The spring market typically sees increased buyer and seller activity.
While there might be more competition, sellers may also be motivated to close deals quickly, potentially leading to more favorable buyer negotiations.
Favorable Financing Conditions:
Mortgage rates may be relatively stable or lower during the spring, providing buyers with favorable financing conditions.
Lower interest rates can reduce monthly mortgage payments and overall cost savings.
Quick Home Inspections:
Longer daylight hours during spring allow for more efficient and thorough home inspections.
Buyers can identify potential issues and negotiate repairs before finalizing the purchase.
Seasonal Mood Boost:
The overall mood during spring is positive, and this optimism can extend to the real estate market.
Buyers may feel more motivated and enthusiastic about making significant life changes, such as purchasing a new home.
Timely Moving and Settling In:
Purchasing a home in spring provides ample time for closing, moving, and settling into the new property before the busier summer months.
This timing allows buyers to enjoy their new homes and communities during the warmer seasons.
While the spring market offers numerous advantages, buyers must carefully assess their circumstances and market conditions. Location, personal preferences, and local real estate market dynamics should also be considered when determining the best time to buy a home.

HERstory! Celebrating Women's History Month
Tumblr media
After Centuries Of Learning About History, We Now Recognize The Importance Of HERstory!
March is National Women’s History Month, which grew from a single day (March 8) in 1910: International Women’s Day. Initially set aside as a way to protest child labor and sweatshop working conditions and demand women’s suffrage, a month-long observance was established by Congress in 1987.
National Women's History Month is now dedicated to celebrating and honoring women's accomplishments, contributions, and history. It serves as an opportunity to recognize the achievements of women in various fields, including science, politics, arts, education, business, and more.
During March, various events, programs, and initiatives nationwide honor women's achievements, raise awareness about women's history, and foster discussions about issues related to gender equality. The month provides a platform to highlight the accomplishments of women who have significantly impacted society and inspire future generations to pursue their goals and dreams.
We’ve rounded up some ways the DMV celebrates women's history and progress during Women’s History Month – and, in many cases, year-round.
Check Out The National Museum Of Women In The Arts.
NMWA advocates for better representation of women artists and serves as a center for thought leadership, community engagement, and social change. Their collections feature more than 5,500 works from the 16th century to today.
On Friday, March 8, the NMWA celebrates International Women’s Day with virtual and in-person programs, including yoga, gallery talks, and keynote speaker Ferren Gipson, author of Women’s Work: From Feminine Arts to Feminist Art.
National Museum of Women in the Arts 1250 New York Ave. NW Washington, D.C.
(Virtually) Visit The Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum.
Although not yet a physical building, Congress signed legislation to create the Smithsonian American Women's History Museum on December 27th, 2020, making the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum a new entity. For now, the museum is a digital treasure trove of collection highlights and stories related to women and girls.
The museum’s headline program for Women’s History Month will be “Becoming Visible,” an interactive digital exhibition launching on March 8. Curators will narrate five remarkable stories of women from the past alongside an introduction narrated by Rosario Dawson, actress, designer, and producer who also serves on the museum's advisory council.
Feb. 16 - Mar. 17 Arena Stage features Tempestuous Elements, the struggle of Education luminary Anna Julia Cooper as she fights for her students’ rights to an advanced curriculum. Witness the journey of this formidable Black feminist’s fight for educational equity, freedom, and legitimacy at the turn of the 20th century.
Arena Stage 1101 Sixth St. SW Washington, D.C.
Learn About Clara Barton.
You can learn about the founder of the American Red Cross by visiting the house where Clara Barton lived from 1897 until she died in 1912. Located in Glen Echo, Md., the structure was initially used as the American Red Cross warehouse. It was later remodeled to serve as the organization's headquarters and Clara Barton's home. It has three stories and 30 rooms, a basement that housed disaster supplies for victims of war and natural disasters, official Red Cross papers, and Barton's personal belongings. The house is located seven miles from Washington, D.C., on a bluff overlooking the Potomac River.
Clara Barton National Historic Site 5801 Oxford Road Glen Echo, Md.
Commune In The Spirit Of Rachel Carson.
Renowned environmentalist and biologist Rachel Carson (1907 - 1964) spent most of her adult life in Montgomery County, Md. Her most famous book, “Silent Spring,” recounts the devastating impacts of the pesticide DDT and is largely credited with changing how Americans think about the natural world. Rachel Carson Conservation Park is a 650-acre park dedicated to environmental preservation, providing opportunities to enjoy the natural environment. The park contains more than six miles of natural surface trails for hiking and equestrian use and is one of Montgomery County's premier conservation areas.
Rachel Carson Conservation Park 22201 Zion Road Brookeville, MD.
Visit The Home Of The Mother Of The Father Of Our Nation.
Mary Ball Washington, the mother of George Washington, was an intrepid 18th-century woman who raised five children alone. The oldest became the first president of the United States. George Washington paid his last visit to his mother at the house in Fredericksburg in April 1789, en route to New York for his inauguration. Crafting Meaningful New Year’s Resolutions!
Tumblr media
As 2023 comes to a close, the tradition of setting New Year’s resolutions offers a powerful opportunity for self-reflection, growth, and positive change. Crafting resolutions involves more than fleeting promises; it’s about setting meaningful intentions and taking steps toward personal development. Here’s a comprehensive guide to creating impactful New Year’s resolutions that inspire and empower you throughout the year.
Reflect on the Past Year: Consider your achievements, challenges, and areas where you’d like to see growth or improvement. Assess both successes and lessons learned as they provide valuable insights for shaping your resolutions.
Set Specific and Attainable Goals: Make your resolutions specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). Vague goals can be challenging to achieve, while clear and defined objectives create a roadmap for success. For instance, rather than saying “exercise more,” specify a goal like “exercise for 30 minutes, three times a week.”
Focus on Priorities: Identify areas of your life that hold significance to you. Whether it’s health, career, relationships, personal growth, or hobbies, prioritize the aspects that resonate deeply with your values and aspirations.
Keep it Realistic: Set achievable goals that align with your current circumstances and resources. Unrealistic expectations can lead to disappointment and frustration. Start with small, attainable steps that gradually build momentum toward larger objectives.
Focus on Habits and Systems: Consider forming habits and implementing systems that support your resolutions. Building a routine or system around your goals makes them more sustainable. For instance, if your goal is to improve nutrition, plan and prepare healthy meals in advance.
Accountability and Tracking Progress: Stay accountable by sharing your resolutions with a supportive friend or family member. Consider joining groups or communities with similar goals for mutual encouragement.
Embrace Growth Mindset: Adopt a growth mindset that welcomes challenges and sees failures as learning opportunities. Cultivate resilience and perseverance in pursuing your resolutions, understanding that setbacks are part of the journey.
Balance and Self-compassion: Strive for balance in your resolutions. Avoid overwhelming yourself with too many goals or striving for perfection. Be kind to yourself and practice self-compassion when facing setbacks or challenges.
Include Personal Well-being: Prioritize your well-being in your resolutions. Incorporate self-care practices such as mindfulness, meditation, adequate sleep, and stress management techniques. A healthy mind and body support overall success in achieving your goals.
Reflect and Adapt Along the Way: Regularly reassess your resolutions. Reflect on your progress and adjust goals if needed. Life circumstances may change, so adapt your resolutions accordingly to stay aligned with your aspirations.
Visualize and Affirm: Visualize yourself achieving your resolutions. Create vision boards or use visualization techniques to reinforce your commitment. Additionally, practice positive affirmations that affirm your capability to achieve your goals.
Explore New Opportunities: Be open to new experiences and opportunities that align with your resolutions. Stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to personal growth and unexpected successes.
Express Gratitude and Celebrate: Celebrate each milestone and achievement along the way. Express gratitude for the progress made, regardless of its scale. Celebrating successes reinforces positive behavior and motivates further progress.
New Year’s resolutions offer a powerful framework for self-improvement and growth. When crafted with intention and commitment, they serve as a guiding force toward a more fulfilling and purposeful life. As you embark on this journey of personal transformation, embrace the process, stay resilient, and celebrate the progress you make along the way. Here’s to a new year filled with growth, possibilities, and self-discovery!

As winter arrives, it brings chilly temperatures and harsh weather conditions that can take a toll on your home. To ensure your home remains cozy, energy-efficient, and well-protected during the colder months, implementing proper winter maintenance is crucial. Here are essential tips for maintaining your home during the winter season:
1. Check and Maintain Heating Systems: The heart of winter home maintenance is your heating system. Schedule a professional inspection of your furnace or heating system to ensure it’s functioning efficiently. Replace filters regularly and consider a programmable thermostat to manage temperatures effectively.
2. Insulate Doors and Windows: Prevent drafts and heat loss by sealing gaps around doors and windows. Use weather stripping or caulking to seal gaps and apply window insulation film to improve energy efficiency. Consider using draft stoppers at the base of doors to keep warmth inside.
3. Protect Pipes from Freezing: Frozen pipes can lead to costly damage. Insulate exposed pipes in unheated areas like attics, basements, or crawl spaces. Let faucets drip during freezing temperatures to prevent water from freezing inside the pipes.
4. Clean Gutters and Downspouts: Clear leaves, debris, and any blockages from gutters and downspouts to prevent ice dams and water backup. This ensures proper drainage and reduces the risk of water damage to your home’s foundation.
5. Roof Inspection and Maintenance: Inspect your roof for any signs of damage, loose or missing shingles, or potential leaks. Repair any issues to prevent water from seeping in during winter storms. Trim overhanging branches to prevent them from causing damage to the roof.
6. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Winter means increased use of heating systems and fireplaces, making it crucial to ensure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in working condition. Replace batteries and test detectors regularly to ensure safety.
7. Winterize Outdoor Spaces: Prepare your outdoor spaces for winter by storing or covering outdoor furniture, draining and storing garden hoses, and shutting off outdoor water sources. Trim trees and bushes to prevent heavy snow from causing damage.
8. Seal Cracks and Gaps: Inspect your home’s exterior for cracks, gaps, or holes that could allow cold air or pests to enter. Seal any openings with caulk or insulation to improve energy efficiency and keep critters out.
9. Maintain Chimney and Fireplace: Schedule a professional chimney inspection and cleaning to remove creosote buildup and ensure safe and efficient operation. Use a fireplace screen to prevent sparks from escaping and keep children and pets away from the fireplace.
10. Reverse Ceiling Fans: Switch your ceiling fans to run in a clockwise direction at a low speed to redistribute warm air that rises to the ceiling. This helps maintain a more consistent temperature throughout the room.
11. Prepare Emergency Kits: Create or update emergency kits that include essentials like flashlights, batteries, blankets, non-perishable food, water, and a first-aid kit. Be prepared for power outages or inclement weather.
12. Consider a Home Energy Audit: Schedule a professional home energy audit to identify areas where your home may be losing energy. Addressing these issues can lead to significant energy savings and a more comfortable home.
By taking proactive steps to maintain your home during the winter months, you can ensure a warm, safe, and energy-efficient environment for you and your family. Prioritize these maintenance tasks to protect your home and enjoy a cozy winter season indoors.
