“ first true friend ” .
why not chloe? shouldn’t it be horace? why, out of the people goh met, was ash considered his first friend?
ok, ok, let’s bring it back to jn001. let’s have a little talk, yeah.
goh and chloe attended professor oak’s pokémon camp together when they were six years old, and seemed to be childhood friends. goh was interested in research and learning about pokémon, chloe’s dad ─ professor cerise’s ─ job.
chloe decided to deal with goh, knowing he was just some lonely kid who had a hard time talking to anybody else. they didn’t exactly become friends, more like acquaintances, they were friendly to each other because they could be.
during jn001, we get to see goh’s personality for the first time; overconfident, shy, gets riled up and reckless easily. being alone for what was basically his entire childhood up to that point, he didn’t understand how people felt. about him. about anything, really. chloe seemed to be more of his guide into the world, even if she got annoyed with the way he acted easily.
goh keeps talking about all the pokémon they see at the camp, even correcting professor oak on his statement that every pokémon evolves. even if the other kids were impressed, chloe wasn’t. she knew goh just acted like this, and felt he may have been rude to professor oak for saying everything he knew.
both chloe and goh seeing mew was the climax of the episode, and though focused on mew, we learned a lot about them. goh didn’t want any friends, even if chloe said the reason he had none was because of how he acted. they didn’t know each other, they didn’t really know how they acted.
seeing mew together made them know about each other a bit more, it strengthened their bond the littlest bit. they weren’t exactly ‘friends’ because they didnt want to be. they hung out, but kept most of their lives from each other because they didn’t need to be close. they didn’t seem to want to.
goh didn’t seem to want chloe ( or anybody ) to really be considered his friend, chloe didn’t seem to wanna keep dealing with goh. they were friendly. but not ‘true friends’. not until after ash.
now, let’s skip forward a bit. 31 episodes, but just about a year in goh’s timeline. in jn032, we learn about goh’s previous vacation to johto, where he met tokio in ilex forest. i’ve said his dub name enough times in this post.
the two were instantly friendly with each other, unlike how goh acted around chloe. tokio talked about his interest in meeting celebi, and goh impressed him with talking about how he got to see mew. they both have an interest in research, as well as mythical pokémon, and got along easily.
tokio is calmer and kinder, bringing out those traits in goh as well. even if goh seemed to talk a lot at the pokémon camp, he showed a different, more natural side of himself to tokio. they’re very similar, more similar than goh and chloe were, and thus, became friends easier. yeah, friends.
the two were friendly because of how similar they were, which made their bond strong even during their first time meeting. they both went searching for the ilex forest shrine during the episode, and had fun during it. they made new friends that day in each other, and promised to meet up again the next day when they realized they should leave the forest due to the dark.
but then they didn’t meet up the next day. tokio ended up with a fever, something he couldn’t tell goh about, which made goh think tokio just . . didn’t want to come back the next day. didn’t want to talk to him.
it wasn’t the first time we saw goh’s trust issues, and not the first time he declared someone as ‘not his friend’ because of it either. but it was the first time we saw it in goh’s timeline, the first time he felt betrayed. the next time he reconsidered a friendship with somebody was in jn003, he still didn’t know who to trust.
goh and tokio didn’t re-connect and talk about the misunderstanding until three years later, the entire three years making goh believe that tokio wasn’t his true friend. he didn’t want to consider tokio a ‘true friend’, not until after he met ash.
jn002 and jn003 were the first times ash and goh interacted. in the 2nd episode, they didn’t really have a ‘friendship moment’ yet, well, other than their ride across the city on lugia’s back. they already seemed so in sync with each other, as if they had the exact same feelings during the lugia ride.
goh accepted ash as his friend, something he’d tried to do multiple times before and only did once. at the moment, he just felt like ash wouldn’t betray him. he knew fate pulled them together, and he decided to trust fate this time.
delia told goh to look after ash for her, and goh knew he could. he didn’t know exactly what he was feeling, but he knew this was a new beginning, his relationship with ash would be something he hadn’t felt before.
jn003 really felt like goh and ash’s first episode together, though. ash and goh recieved their first missions as research fellows, and decided to investigate it. goh learned a lot about ash, how he cares about how a pokémon feels, and will trust anyone or anything the minute he knows he can.
goh was already re-thinking his friendship, realizing how different they really were. he knew how that made chloe feel almost annoyed with him, and already expected the worst.
but goh didn’t know how ash was like, he seemed to barely even know how he himself was like. he didn’t know ash until he watched him protect the ivysaur, and he had the moment of realization. oh shit, this guy. he’s the one, the one who’ll stay by my side.
he realized ash trusted the ivysaur just like he trusted goh. they were instant friends because they trusted each other instantly. he decided to keep trusting ash, one of the best decisions he made. because they became true friends, they helped each other grow.
ash helped goh understand how to make friends, it’s what helped him be better friends with chloe, and understand her. it’s what helped him gain a new ─ and old ─ friend when he reunited with horace.
they’re called ‘firstfriendshipping’ because goh initially needed ash’s help to turn his sorta-friendships into true friendships. and now that they’re apart, goh will always remember how ash helped him on his journey.
they were true friends. and ash happened to be goh’s first.

While I'll avoid spoilers on upcoming eps, lemme talk about one topic relating to this week's upcoming episode based on the preview and known summaries, as like, I'm kind of scared of how they'll deliver. It's gonna be one of those big hit or miss episodes depending on what's done. At least for me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like, what we know about these two is that they had such a sweet friendship during childhood that had a rocky downhill due to Tokio getting sick and ending up breaking a promise because of it, unintentionally. Gou was so bitter about it for so long. And then they manage to reconnect and fix that. Tokio NEVER forgot about that, and Gou also managed to forgive him after knowing what happened.
So, because of this, I find it extremely hard to believe that the two would ever, EVER, betray each other's trusts again. It is not something I can see either of them doing. Their friendship is built on a timeless promise that they ended up keeping.
So hearing the plot being about a survival game where you go against dozens other PM candidates and need to come out as the sole survival, has me extremely scared of them screwing that friendship up. Part of me knows better than that, that there could be a hidden objective of testing whether one would betray a fellow member's trust. But like, idk. I'm still scared on a 50/50 scale.
People know how I have felt about Gou throughout the show, but lately he's actually been tolerable to me again, and Gou and Tokio's dynamic and bond has ALWAYS been one of my favourites, ever since JN032. And back in JN102, I liked how they brought Tokio back and managed to show their fixed-up relationship. So like, they wouldn't go as far as to make them break each other's trusts over a game, right? Right??
Let's just say I'm, cautious about the episode lol. Glad to see Tokio again, so glad they FINALLY brought him back after one and a half year of absence for PM episodes and glad it wasn't just a one-off return either. So let's see how JN delivers here.

whos slandering my son on tv tropes i just wanna talk
Tumblr media
(Image description: a screenshot of a tv tropes page that reads "Gotta Catch Them All: After capturing Scorbunny, he becomes keen on acquiring one of every species of Pokémon. His character is a shout-out to Pokémon Go, after all. However, this is quite a dark mindset as in JN032, he states that he's capturing all these Pokemon so that he's always surrounded by "friends" who will never leave him behind." End Description)
hey so i was on tv tropes and i just have a question??? about this line here?
did i miss something because I've watched that episode and as far as I know Goh states no such thing. The only line I can think of is after telling Raboot and Sobble about walking home in the rain, when he says
"That was our first and last meeting. And that's why I...” (concerned pokemon noises) ”Of course. I've got you guys."
Here are some screenshots:
Tumblr media
(image description: goh looking upset and staring off into the distance. he is standing in a grassy clearing. sobble is on his right, raboot on his left. both are looking at him with concern. the shot is presented from a high angle, making Goh look slightly smaller. End ID)
Tumblr media
(Image description: the same as the above, though now cropped in closer. goh has stopped looking into space and is now looking at raboot with surprise. nothing else has changed. end ID)
Tumblr media
(image description: a close up on Goh’s face. He is smiling and his mouth is open. His expression is soft and his eyebrows are drawn closer together. The caption reads “of course. I’ve got you guys.” End ID)
Now I’m infamously bad at tone, ask my friends, but from what I can gather here, Goh sounds upset for the first two lines, "That was our first and last meeting. And that's why I...”
He never finishes that sentence, but my guess is that he was going to say something to the effect of “don’t trust people easily” or “don’t have many friends” or “didn’t want to come back here” or even just “keep staring off into space”. (In fact, in the english dub, he explicitly states “He’s the reason making friends hasn’t been easy” and doesn’t trail off at all)
But his pokemon, who love him and are concerned for him, speak up, and bring him back to earth.
And Goh sounds relived when he speaks again. He even laughs a little while he’s saying ‘of course’ at the end.
I say, he’s reassuring himself and his pokemon. That there’s no need to worry about being lonely if there are people who will care about him, as demonstrated just now by the pokemon chattering at him and being with him now. its not a ‘catch all the pokemon to be my friends’ thing, its a ‘now i do have friends who are here with me, and they happen to be these specific pokemon’.
so that part of the tv tropes page is misleading and kinda just untrue. this has been a debate against probably no one. i love my son, goh.

Favorite eps?
In the entire series or...?
Pochama's ep about not wanting to evolve in DP, most of Pokémon Hunter J eps (idk :D), Shigeru eps in DP, entire Meloetta Arc in Best Wishes, Nyagotiator arc in Best Wishes, Emonga join Rockets ep in Best Wishes, the ep where Rockets and Satoshi team up to solve the alien Pokémon mask case and are called too stupid (afjashgfhgfs), SM020, SM076, SM079, SM120, SM100 & SM101, SM108, Many of the Alola league eps, many of Aether Arc and Necrozma Arc eps, SM145, SM146, JN032, JN024, JN021, JN019, JN010, JN055, JN065, JN074 & JN075, JN105, JN106, JN111, JN112...
Honestly, there's a LOT of fav eps for me in each series, but those are to say the few. YES, there are many good eps in JN, never denied that, but I don't like how the overall structure feels like a mess still lol.

Pokemon JN032 Review...
Despite Ash and Pikachu's first ever Main Series absence, this episode is definitely one of my favorites in Pokemon Journeys. Goh's past was portrayed perfectly in this episode, and learning why he had such an attitude towards Ash in JN003 is what partly made this episode a great one. But what I really like is that young Goh meets a kid who is a lot like him. Tokio won me over in this episode, I knew he isn't the type of person who breaks a promise.
Tumblr media
I just love these two, and I really hope Tokio returns in a future episode.
Tumblr media
Of course I was quite sad when Goh thought Tokio stood him up, unaware that Tokio got sick that day and was unable to show up like they promised. But I was so happy that Tokio didn't forget, and that scene where Goh finds and reads Tokio's letter was emotional!
Tumblr media
But seriously, I want to see Tokio again someday...
Tumblr media
...and Shiny Celebi tease from the upcoming Pokemon Movie.
Definitely a good emotional backstory episode so I give it a 10/10!!!
