Those two stories are filled with the Sherlock I love , a vulnerable and sensitive man with a fragile heart in the truest sense of the word this time.

I see fanfiction as literature an opinion formed by decades of library work and extensive fanfiction reading in the past three years.

And these tales have what great literature should bring to the table.

Although I wish they'd much more chapters.

What's your Jolto headcanon? Did they act on it or they just danced around each other with their feelings the whole time when John was in the army?

I personally think that John might've had a good reason to not act on his feelings- the difference in their posts (like John was a Captain, Shop to was a Major, it would've been unprofessional for them to go for it).

Ahh, good question!

I HONESTLY suspect that they didn't act on their feelings, but it was a mutual thing, obviously – like I think John did try, but Sholto denied John, probably because of a rank thing. So yeah, the only way I can see them MAYBE sharing SOMETHING was just before Sholto became John's commanding officer... like maybe they had a night, and Sholto got promoted, so Sholto believed it could never move forward past that night.

Either way, it's clear the feelings were mutual, but I think internalized homophobia from both men OR because of ranks, they just couldn't do it. BUT it is fun that it is left ambiguous, because it leaves room for the fans to fill in the gaps :)

Pride

I owe you two ficlets, to make the 31 complete. Here's the first, to mark the beginning of Pride Month.

John realises he’s bisexual around the time Harry comes out to her parents. But their reaction scares him so much he crawls back into the closet and nails the door shut.

It’s fine. He’s bi, after all. He’s fine with girls. Girls are wonderful. No reason to ever open that door again, no need to make a fuss.

He’s fine for years. He dates a few lovely women at Uni and in medical school, he has flings and relationships and everything in between. He doesn’t think about the door at all, mostly. If there’s a chap who catches his eye occasionally, he shrugs it off. No harm in a bit of a look. 

He falls in love with a man in Afghanistan. But Sholto is as unattainable as he is magnetic. The difference in rank alone would be enough to make any relationship between them impossible. But if John’s sexuality is a door he nailed shut, Sholto’s is a titanium safe buried at the bottom of the Mariana Trench. They kiss once, when they’re both very, very, very drunk, and they never speak of it again. 

It’s fine. Well, to be honest, it hurts like fuck, but it’s fine. It can’t be, for many reasons, and in a way, John is almost relieved. He doesn’t have to make a decision. He doesn’t have to open that door. It hurts, but it's safe.

Then he meets Sherlock Holmes and he’s completely, totally fucked. The door is in shambles, and there’s his heart, bursting out of his chest and into Sherlock’s hands before the ink is dry on the lease agreement. 

The thing about Sherlock is, he isn’t safe. At all. Not even a little bit. Sherlock wouldn’t be safe if John was completely comfortable with his sexuality (which he obviously isn’t). Sherlock is explosive, and unpredictable, and magnetic, and gorgeous, and John loves him, loves him, loves him. 

But there’s two problems. One is that John is never, ever sure of Sherlock. Ever. And that’s part of the charm, of course, but if the person holding your heart in his hands can’t be relied on not to quash it into mush, it makes going any further very difficult. The second is that John isn’t sure of himself. He’s not sure he has the courage to be out of that comfortable closet he built for himself. There would be questions. And he’s not sure he’s ready for that. 

But they have time. He can learn to trust Sherlock with his heart, and he can learn to trust himself.

Then Sherlock jumps, and John wants to die, too.

If John is honest, the next few years are a bit of a blur, and he feels like he spends them in a half-trance of unreality. He suddenly snaps back to reality when he’s standing at an altar and marrying a woman he barely knows with Sherlock watching with an expression in his eyes that hurts.

Things go to absolute shit afterwards, which is truly impressive, given how bad things were before. The next two years are an absolute horrorshow, and John would like to erase that whole awful time from his harddrive.

He comes out of the ashes his life has turned to with two things still standing: His daughter, who is delightful, and Sherlock, who proved once and for all that for better or worse is a promise he can make and keep. And he feels the strong urge to be a better man, for both of them. 

So when he finally feels like the ground under his feet has stopped constantly shifting, he goes back to that closet door. He removes the boards he used to nail it shut, and he opens it. He has a good, hard look at what he wants and who he is, and finds that actually, he’s good enough. Maybe he even deserves to be loved. 

He finds his heart at the bottom of that closet. It’s battered and beaten, but still strong. He dusts it off and hands it back to Sherlock Holmes, who takes it with gentle hands and smiles. 

And that’s when John realises that he had Sherlock’s heart in the palm of his hand the whole time. It’s as battered and beaten as John’s, but as strong. A lot of its wounds are self-inflicted, like John’s, and a lot of the blows they dealt to each other. This stops now, John thinks. I’ll guard your heart and you’ll guard mine. And that fucking door stays open. 

He’s 43 when he gets married to a man, their proud daughter at their side.

There are questions. And looks. And people with opinions.

But John knows now that people’s hate can’t hurt him if he doesn’t hate himself, and that anybody who doesn’t want him to be happy isn’t worth his time. And he knows he has to show this to his daughter every day, so she won’t end up feeling like she has to nail shut a part of herself to fit in. 

So he paints the door in rainbow colours and leaves it wide open, and he lives his life. 

And he’s happy.

i think we can all agree Sherlock is suicidal. His response to Sholto’s “one should embrace it [death] when it comes” being “we would never do that to John, not in John’s wedding” shows Sherlock’s death wish.

Which means that he could have simply die at Barts back then, but he didn’t, because of John. He didn’t die because he couldn’t leave John believing he was a fraud, that Sherlock (and by extension, his relationship with John) was fake. So he fakes his death for two fucking years in the hope to return to John.

But when he does, when he finally returns to John, he’s irremediable broken, he’s mad, he’s hurt, and most importantly, he moved on (or so it seems). He gets married with Mary even after Sherlock’s return. He doesn’t move back to Baker St. What Sherlock learns is that keeping himself alive wasn’t all that worth it after all, because he lost John anyways.

So when Moriarty (Sherlock) says “Die already, why can’t you?” and he (almost) does, is Sherlock finally letting himself wish for death again.

John once stopped him wishing death. And now that he’s gone, Sherlock wishes death again.

He doesn’t die, of course, because one variable has changed and it’s that John is in danger. So he keeps himself alive yet again because of John.

“Have you reflected, my friend, how many people in that house stood to benefit by Sir Emory’s death? Mrs. Amat, Miss Irene, Miss Hooper, Mrs. Hudson. Only one, in fact, does not. Major Sholto.” 

Holmes’ tone in uttering that name was so peculiar that I looked up, puzzled. 

“I don’t understand you,” I said. 

“Two of the people I accused have given me the truth.” 

“You think Major Sholto has something to conceal also?” 

“As for that,” remarked Holmes nonchalantly, “there is a saying, is there not, that Englishmen conceal only one thing—their love? And Major Sholto, I should say, is not good at concealments.” 

I feared we might be straying uncomfortably close to something I, too, wished to conceal…

Just dawned on me again how in TSOT Mary LIED to Sherlock about John talking constantly about Sholto (when, of all people, he probably talked to her about Sherlock nonstop, not about Sholto).

WHY did she lie? What did Moftiss want to tell us?

I mean apart from her being nasty and evil.

And actually, if Moftiss showed us that she lied, wasn't that a pretty big hint that John's "happy marriage" was all bullshit, and "sweet Mary" haunting John in the following episodes - also bullshit? Mary narrating half the season 4 - also bullshit? I mean, for the ones who do not observe, she's this sweet woman who oh so sadly died oh how sad, poor sad John, meanwhile they told us at least twice that she's a liar - first when Sherlock LITERALLY deduced it while looking at her, and second indirectly from us seeing her lie to Sherlock about Sholto.

December moments

Prompts used in this chapter: stuck at home - season's greetings - baby please come home

If Sherlock ever gets jealous? Oh, yes! Normally he stares down or gives a venomous deduction to anyone who dares letting their eyes linger inappropriately on his John, but when John willingly contacts an old friend, Sherlock knows he needs to control his jealousy.

December 16

My fever has vanished when I wake, but I’m terribly thirsty. Even before I’ve considered calling John, he emerges in the doorway to the bedroom with a large glass of cold water. I try to speak, but he urges me to drink first. 

“Thank you, John,” I say when I’ve emptied half the glass. 

My voice is deeper than normal, and still hoarse. He greets me softly and places a palm on my forehead to check my temperature. 

“Feeling better today?” he asks. 

I nod, take his hand, places it on my cheek and lean into his palm. He bends down and kisses the top of my head. He refuses to bestow me with a kiss to my lips when I’m still ill. I huff my complaint and he pets my hair to make up for it.

I’m obviously stuck at home for another day or two, which is fine, because I’m in no state to do much else than use the bathroom, make tea and doze on the sofa anyway. 

John’s writing his annual season’s greetings to major Sholto, and I can only grit my teeth and soldier on. I hate that John still corresponds with his former superior officer, despite it only happens once a year. It’s of course childish of me to be jealous of a relationship that was nowhere near what John and I have, but I can’t help the gnawing feeling in my gut. 

“Right, I’ll just pop out to post this and then I’m off to Barts to help Mike with a medical report he wanted my opinion on. He’s supposed to deliver it tomorrow. You’ll be alright now, I think. The fever is all but gone,” he says and cups my face, scanning my eyes while stroking my cheekbones. 

I close my eyes and revel in the proximity, humming appreciatively when I feel warm lips on my forehead. 

“Try to get some sleep, yeah,” John murmurs. 

The warmth I felt just now is gone within seconds of his departure. I try to sleep, I really do, but images of Sholto and John in their uniforms kissing in the Afghan desert, makes me nauseous. John is right, I do act like a child sometimes. In my defence, my brain seems to be filled with wool at the moment, and I’m unable to think rational about the matter. 

I turn on the telly, but everything reminds me of John, so I turn it off. After I’ve drunk a cup of tea, I try to enter my mind palace, but to no avail. Music, then. Since I’m too weak to play myself, I find a playlist John’s put together. It contains both classical and pop music. The classical pieces are soothing, and I must’ve dozed off, because when I wake it’s considerably darker outside. 

John’s still out and I feel sorry for myself. It doesn’t get any better when one of this Mariah Carey’s Christmas songs plays from my phone on the table. Baby please come home. What a fitting song for my mood. I reach out to skip it, but then she sings: you should be here with me, and I break down, sobbing like a child.

And that’s the state John finds me in mere minutes later. Normally I would’ve been embarrassed, but I’m beyond that and clings to him when he takes me in his arms and rocks me, whispering soothing words into my hair. 

“Shh. I’m back now. I’ll always come back to you, you know that, right? You’re my sweetheart, my good boy. How about some mulled wine to cheer you up? Would you like that?”

I love it when he does this, even if I shouldn’t. It makes me appear like a big child, but I need it. Desperately. John knows this. Knows how I crave being attended to when I’m in this vulnerable state. And there isn’t another person in the world I would want to see me in such a condition, who I can trust like I can trust John. He’s my rock, and knight in shining armour. My savour and the man I want to share the rest of my life with, whether it’ll be long or short. 

He holds me close when we go to bed, kissing and petting my hair until I fall asleep in his arms.

Personality: Charming, Experienced, Witty, Fiercely Loyal to his friends and loved ones, Good moral compass

Occupation: Doctor (GP, no longer a surgeon)

Habits/Mannerisms: Intermittent hand tremor, Psychosomatic Limp, PTSD, Drinks his feelings on occasion.

Background: Military Doctor, Invalided out early, Bisexual, formerly married, Wife died to cancer.

Internal Conflict: Never really acted on his bisexuality before, Had a brief encounter in military with Major Sholto ended badly, stuck with Girlfriends because it was more socially acceptable. Long past the age of wanting short-term relationships, also has a young daughter now, so he is more careful about his choices and time spent outside the home.

External Conflict: Rosie (his daughter) makes it clear that she feels the void her mom left and has been more aware of his loneliness and sadness than he thought he was showing as a father. Now that the whole nation knows it (she called in to radio station and announced he needs a new wife), he wants to make an effort to change for her. To show her that he is working on allowing himself to be happy, even though he doesn't think love strikes twice.

Last summer my cousin happened to pick the venue from HLV as her reception location. I about died of excitement (obviously). It was an absolutely lovely wedding and I realized after all this time I never shared the pictures, so I figured, better late than never!

The hall had obviously been painted for Sherlock or repainted after, as the walls were all white. It was a modestly sized venue but for a smaller wedding it was quite comfortable. The area where John and Sherlock (etc.) were seated in the episode (and where Sherlock gave his speech) was where dancing was set up for my cousin's wedding. You know I'm a sadist and requested "December, 1963" before the night was over ;) The opposite side of the room had a permanent looking bar. The windows let in beautiful light and the gardens outside were exquisite (and included an underground grotto with a waterfall, where many of us sought reprieve from the heat). The scenes elsewhere (the church, the scene with Sherlock showing off his dance moves, outside Sholto's room, confronting the photographer, etc.) were not filmed here. Happy to answer any questions, I know I've been AWOL from Tumblr for ages but I'll check back in now and then to just spam everyone's timelines with Johnlock and get back in my feels about it all. It was a fantastic experience, and we also spent a few days in London and visited the London Aquarium where the infamous odd Mary death scene was filmed, and stopped by Gower St. and Speedy's obviously. I am happy to post on those too if anyone is interested :)
