Easter
Tumblr media
Age Rating: 12+
Chapters: One of One
Fandom: Grey’s Anatomy
AN: Happy Easter guys! I hope you have a great weekend I just wanted to give you a little fun chapter with the Karev’s. It’s set in Season 17 and it’s a little foreshadow of what will happen as I continue to write this story. And don’t worry I fixed a lot of things wrong with that season mainly Jolex and DeLuca’s death both of which I found abhorrent in every way possible, so this is my way of righting many wrongs. Enjoy!
Summary: Amber and DeLuca spend Easter with Alex and Jo in Meredith’s backyard as their new niece Luna spends her first Easter with them.
Words: 2503
“Okay are you ready?” Andrew asks me in the driver’s seat as he puts his mask on. I adjust the straps of my neon yellow green dress with strappy white heels in the spirit of Easter.
“Uh yeah.” I grab my purse and grab the door handle until I remember, “Wait! I forgot something.”
I pull out my bunny ears headband and put it on, I see Andrew looking at me with a grin trying hard not to laugh. I look in my mirror and see why it’s so funny, the ears are long, straight and white with yellow metallic fabric inside the ears. It’s something I rushed and bought at Walmart yesterday because even with the vaccine covid is still out there and the last thing I want is to expose my baby niece. I grin at myself and look at my husband who laughs like it’s the funniest thing in the world.
“The things I do for love.” I simply reply with and adjust the ears confidently and open the door. We both get out and walk over to Meredith’s where she’s hosting a small easter egg hunt for the kids in her backyard. Alex and Jo are there with Luna and so are Link and Amelia with their son, Scout. The vaccine came out a few months ago and all of us took it so we’re good. And we wanted the kids to have one normal day while we were still in a pandemic and we thought celebrating Easter would be a good choice.
I’ve never been one to celebrate the holidays in a big way but I decided to start since Alex and Jo got married and decided to host New Years and Christmas parties. It didn’t last long though with 2020 and everything that came from the awful year, we stalled holidays and birthdays. And of course, it was also the year they adopted Luna, making me an aunt and sad that I wouldn’t get to spoil her with gifts in a room full of people. I still got to do it but it’s less fun with nobody around to see what an awesome auntie I am.
I wasn’t the only one in this car who loved that little girl. Her uncle Andrew next to me also made it his mission to spoil her with love and extravagant gifts. When Alex and Jo first brought Luna home, we both got her Build-A-Bear’s to our surprise. We agreed to get separate gifts which was a mistake because he got her a custom plush bunny wearing a princess dress with ‘Luna’ sewed on of the ears and when you press the paw it says, ‘I love you’. It made my quiet and naked pink furry teddy bear look less like a gift and more of a hand me down.
We both agreed from then on to get gifts together so we don’t show each other up and after the year we’ve had it was easy to agree on such a trivial matter. Things got rough for us in the beginning of the year and not just because of the pandemic. Andrew had a mental breakdown and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder like his father. He started acting erratic and irritable, especially towards me and a lot of ugly words came out of his mouth when I tried to help him. Not too long after he broke up with me and kicked me out of our apartment causing me to leave in tears. It was very triggering for me with everything I went through with my mother and brother, especially when he broke down in tears after yelling out that his patient’s aunt was trafficking her.
I tried calling him after that because he dropped the face of the earth and I got drunk one night and left a voicemail that made Alec Baldwin’s 2007 voicemail to his daughter sound like whale noises. Basically, I called him a copy of his dad and the only reason he got me to open my life to him was so he could tear it down because he’s a cold, manipulative carbon copy of a crazy man who I hope ends up dead in ditch then he would feel exactly how I felt then. Not my finest moment and he showed it as he ignored me while trying to save Richard’s life and I was fine with that because I had enough crazy people in my life who refused my help so I did not want another.
From what I heard his sister held an intervention for him and he finally got therapy and started taking meds. He apologized for everything he did to me and was looking to get back together. I told him that night I wasn’t gonna buckle down like my mom and go back to a man who hurt me and left me to lick my wounds. After that he tried to show me multiple times how sorry he was and how he wanted to fix us but I wasn’t having it. It wasn’t until he was stabbed while following a sex trafficker that I decided to give us one more chance.
It wasn’t smooth sailing at all especially since I was reluctant to make myself vulnerable again and Alex, Jo and Jackson made it clear they didn’t forgive Andrew for what he put me through since as my actual and spiritual siblings they felt protective of me. I had to work out a lot of my issues concerning this like my fear of ending up like my mother and reluctance to trust him fully again. And with covid and the burnout that pain was increased. It took a lot of work on both of our parts and we had to start slowly but we got back to the place we were in before his breakdown. I forgave him eventually and it took a while and a lot of grand gestures in front of them but my family forgave him too. They threatened to bury him alive if he ever hurt me again but I say they were good with us back together.
It wasn’t until Christmas our relationship evolved when he proposed to me with a ring as a gift and I said yes. We decided to elope the morning after in city hall with Alex, Jo, Carina, Jackson and Maya present. It’s been four months and things are going good, better than good actually which isn’t what I expected from being married.
After Meredith let us in, we found Alex and Jo in the backyard with Luna. Jo is cradling her while Alex is finding eggs throughout the yard with Meredith’s kids. The sight is calling to me but I’m too distracted with the baby wearing a pink jumpsuit with the hood on that has the cutest little ears on it. I gasp at the sight and walk away from Andrew to greet Luna with a wide smile.
“Hi!” Luna looks at me blankly no doubt not knowing what I’m saying but I don’t care, “How’s my favorite little niece doing?”
Jo chuckles at my doting baby voice, “Like I keep telling you she’s your only niece.”
I keep smiling at the baby too distracted to give Jo the time of day simply replying, “And like I keep telling you she is still my favorite.” I give her belly a little tickle that makes her giggle and it’s so cute I could just die, “Oh you have gotten so big from the first time I saw you and so pink!”
It’s true the first time I saw her was when her birth mom came in with Luna growing in her liver. We were able to get her out at 26 weeks and she spent the rest of the year in the NICU getting surgeries and growing into the healthy and cute toddler I just want to squeeze. She and Alex decided to adopt her after her birth mom died and her father abandoned her and since they both know what the system is like, they wanted to give Luna the home she deserves. I was all for it from the get-go because for the last two years I have been yearning to be an aunt and now I am, Auntie Amber.
“Yeah, you hear that, Luna? Your auntie is happy to have you here with us out in the open and not in some stuffy hospital.” Jo rocks Luna against her chest smiling at her and I do to suddenly overcome with the urge I feel every time I’m near her.
“Oh, I want to hold her, I’m overloading on oxytocin.” I hold my hand out and Jo chuckles before carefully putting her in my arms and I gasp in wonder at this baby, “You are gorgeous, yes you are, you’re the most gorgeous little girl in the world. Your daddy is gonna have to fight all the boys with an ax when you reach teen years.”
“And her uncle too.” Andrew coos as well affectionately touching my shoulders and looking at the baby, “Keeping boys and their greedy hands away from you is gonna be mine and your daddy’s favorite past time.” I look at him behind me amused.
“Oh, I forgot about you.” Andrew chuckles at that kissing the top of my head and I look back at the baby sighing with a smile, “Yeah this girl is golden until she decides to join a nunnery.”
Jo laughs hysterically at that, “With our luck she’ll be a dead gorgeous surgeon and her daddy is gonna be downing antacids and drowning in stress.”
“Most likely.” I look at the baby in amazement and I know how intern me would have reacted to this, “I’ve become what I hated three years ago, a woman who looks at the nearest baby like it’s crack sprinkled with hard liquor.”
“Yeah you and me both sister. Okay sweetie let’s get you some milk while your auntie tries to come down from her baby high.” Jo tries to take the baby from me and I try to hold on for a while longer.
“Come on just one more minute or I can feed her instead I wouldn’t mind really.”
Jo looks at me worriedly and turns to DeLuca for support, “Andrew?”
He puts his hands on my forearms and tries to gently coax me into releasing my baby hostage, “Ease the vice grip bella.” I whimpered but reluctantly handed the baby over to her mom. Jo takes the baby and walks to the kitchen with the baby in tow.
I whimper at the loss of her in my arms with Andrew still behind me, “I am losing it aren’t I?”
“No and I am not just saying that as the husband who is supposed to bend the truth when his wife asks him something.” I grin and turn around to face Andrew who playfully adjusts my bunny ears, “Are we having second thoughts?”
I exhale remembering after we eloped Andrew and I agreed to hold off on having kids because of the pandemic. We both know we weren’t on a clock with both of us young and healthy with rewarding careers. When the time feels right, we’ll know it is and I know now is not the right time.
“No.” I tell him and he simply nods understanding, “The vaccine is out but the pandemic is still on going and even with an announcement I will still be behind a year and need to catch up. I’m sure you want to do things and actually do surgeries more than once every two months.”
Andrew nods, “It would be nice to breathe and not see bruises around my eyes from the goggles.” I grin at him sympathetically, wrap my arms behind his neck and kiss a trail of where I would always see those bruises he leans back and looks horrified, “In laws and kids here.”
“Ah let them look.” I reply coolly and continue kissing a trail until I hear someone clearing their throat loudly. I stop and see Alex behind me carrying a basket of easter eggs looking at me scandalized and I call him out on his hypocrisy, “Oh don’t act like you didn’t have sex in a shed next to a corpse.”
He raises an eyebrow at that mention of their wedding day, “Six feet guys we are in a pandemic.” I groan at that and stop kissing Andrew keeping a good distance away to Alex’s approval, “Good now if you’ll excuse me, I have to show my daughter her eggs that I got for her and beat the other kids to.” I chuckle at that as Alex walks inside and I continue my conversation with Andrew.
“Look until the time is right Alex and Jo’s kids are the closest, I’m ever gonna get to being a parent. I’m just enjoying it while it lasts.”
“Okay cause you know I thought that we were…” He leaves that hanging and I narrow my eyes at him to continue and he does, “You know craving pickles and looking to check out What to Expect When You’re Expecting.” I chuckle at that assumption.
“No trust me I would know and so would you. The surge of hormones combined with my personality I would be like if…if Drogon from Game of Thrones got knocked up.” Andrew chuckles at that, “I would act in a way that can only mean bun in the oven. No this is just me being your typical doting auntie.”
“Okay well either way I am more than open to the discussion.” Andrew grins and I grin back until I feel a pain on the top of my head causing me to gasp. I see confetti falling in front of my eyes and Andrew looks at me shocked and amused before pointing behind me I look and see it was Alex who snuck up and hit me on the head with an easter egg. I see Meredith’s kids doing the same with Link and Amelia chasing each other around the yard. I brush the confetti off my head and glare at Alex as he grins, “Big tactical error my friend, huge.”
Alex underestimates me with a laugh, “Oh really? I don’t see any eggs on you kid.”
I chuckle evilly and reach inside my purse pulling out three cartons of easter eggs I also got from Walmart causing Alex to look in fear, “I’ll give you a five second head start.” I offer causing Alex to smile nervously before running off into the yard. I chase him with kids running around us until I finally crack one then two and finally six eggs on top of his head covering us both with so much confetti laughing full heartedly as a family with our spouses looking on in amusement. I never celebrated easter until today but I can honestly say it’s something I am gonna do from now on with my family.

Best Christmas Yet
“Alex and I both came from broken homes, but we somehow managed to overcome all of that mess and find each other. And together we created a home for ourselves. This one is good… in fact, it’s even better than good. It’s kind, and it’s pure, and it’s safe, and it’s happy. And the thought of sharing a home like that with our kids? It’s all we’ve ever wanted. You know, it’s our own version of a happily-ever-after.”
Here’s my first ever fanfic! It’s a Jolex fix-it fic, so basically me ignoring the fact that 16x16 exists. If you like the sound of some Christmas fluff, then you’d probably enjoy this fic! You can find it on ao3 here.
Please let me know what you think :)

the one where they met in med school - part twenty-six
bacon and babies
Tumblr media
(June 2009)
“You’ve got to eat more bacon.”
Both Jo and Mark looked down at Alex’s quiet comment, “What?”
“You stop yourself from doing a lot of crap that you want to do in life. I’m probably dying right now, and I’m telling you, you’ve got to eat more bacon. Have more sex. Tell the people you love that you love them,” Alex gasped softly for breath.
“Okay, I’ll eat more bacon,” Mark replied. “But you’ve got to hang in there because Lexie is gonna be back any minute. She had to go to the blood bank and back. And you’re supposed to be getting married soon. You’re having a baby, Alex. Jo is pregnant and scared and lost, so you can’t leave her alone.”
“Alex, you’re not dying. Not yet. It’s too early, okay?” Jo attempted to get his attention. "You're going to become a kickass peds surgeon, remember? We have plans. So many plans for a life and a home together. It's not your time yet. We're gonna die when we're ninety years old, lying together in bed, passing in our sleep. That's what we agreed on. You can't go before I do. I won't make it. You're all I've got, Alex. You're my only family."
"That's not true," Alex mustered enough strength to place his hand on Jo's still flat stomach. "We have this baby now, too. We did it, Jo."
"Yeah, we did. We made a baby," Jo let out a watery laugh. "Just like we talked about."
"I'm gonna fight, Jo. I'm gonna fight because I don't want to miss a thing. I told you. I want it all with you. I’ve wanted it all with you since that day in the bar almost six years ago when we got drunk and swapped stories about our crappy childhoods.”
“Me too,” Jo wiped some straying tears from her eyes. “I love you.”
“I love you too,” Alex leaned into her and slowly closed his eyes.
***
“What the hell is taking her so long?” Mark huffed in frustration as he watched the minutes go by. “She should’ve been back by now.”
“She’s coming. She said she was going to get it and be safe and quick,” Jo took a deep breath.
“I’m going to go look for her. She shouldn’t be taking this long,” Mark began to stand up.
“No! Sloan, please. Just give her a few more minutes. I’m sure she’s fine and she’s trying to be careful and quiet, which is why she isn’t back yet,” Jo tried reasoning with Mark. “She’s smart and resourceful. Give her a chance. Besides, the closest blood bank isn’t even on this floor.”
“Yeah, you’re right,” Mark nodded. He looked around the room anxiously. “I’m sorry. I should be taking care of Alex, not worrying about Lexie.”
“Hey. There’s no need to apologize. There’s a shooter loose in the hospital. I’d be more concerned if you weren’t worried,” Jo took a second to truly observe the worry lines etched onto Mark’s face and his tense body language. “You love her.”
“Huh?”
“You love her, Lexie. You actually love her,” Jo repeated.
“Of course I do,” Mark looked at her strangely. “I’ve loved her for the better part of a year now.”
“I know, I just… I’m not sure why it just hit me but it did,” Jo shrugged. “I knew you cared but I guess I never realized how deep it was from your part.”
“You know how you feel about Karev? Well, that’s how I feel about Lexie,” Mark looked down at Alex’s unconscious frame. “I don’t know how you’re still standing after today. If it were me standing over Lexie’s body, I would’ve lost the will to live right along with her.”
“Oh, don’t get me wrong. I’m a wreck. The only reason I’m still standing is because I’m trying to keep this baby safe and make sure Alex lives to see tomorrow,” Jo attempted a laugh. “If not, I’d be lying on the conference table too.”
“God, that’s right, you’re pregnant. Are you okay? Is the baby okay?” Mark asked. “I saw you leaning over with your hand over your stomach a few minutes ago.”
“Yeah, I’m fine. It was just morning sickness,” Jo waved it off. “I haven’t thrown up yet, but the nausea is killer.”
“I can imagine,” Mark cracked a smile. “Kids are good things. Sloan is one of the best things to happen to me and even though I don’t see her often, she knows she’s got me. I want to have more kids one day. Kids that hopefully, I’d get to raise. I want those with Lexie. But she’s still really hurt that I chose my daughter over her.”
“She’ll come around eventually. She loves you. Truly,” Jo placed a hand on Mark’s shoulder. “She’s never loved anyone this much. But, she just needs a chance to understand why you made that choice. Sure, it sucked that you never spoke to her about it, but in that moment you became Sloan’s dad… being someone’s parent changes things. Your loyalties, your priorities. Everything shifts after that. I’m feeling all of those feelings and I’ve only known about my kid for a few hours.”
Mark chuckled softly, “I can’t believe you and Alex are going to be the first to become parents. I never would’ve seen that coming.”
“We’ve been talking about it for a while now,” Jo smiled sadly. “We both want it so badly. And I’m just terrified that I’m going to be the only one who lives long enough to see it.” She held back some tears. “I can’t do this without him. I know everyone says that but for me, it’s different. I never pictured this until he came into my life. I always thought that I was too broken. But then he said this thing that completely changed my perspective on my past. It was back in med school during my third year when I was interviewing for residency programs. I was having some serious imposter syndrome because of my childhood and past trauma, and I was ready to drop out completely. That’s when he told me, ‘Jo. Did you ever think that maybe we have to get a little messed up before we can step up? You don’t get anywhere in life without struggle. This is your story. Own it. Overcome it.’  That’s when I knew that I was going to spend the rest of my life with him.  Because I knew I could overcome anything as long as I had him by my side to remind me that I don’t have to apologize for my story. He made me brave. He makes me brave. That’s why I can’t do this on my own; why I don’t want to do this on my own. That’s why I need him to live. I love him and he’s gotta live to raise this kid and make him or her brave too.”
“You know, for what it’s worth, I think you’re pretty brave all on your own,” Mark squeezed one of Jo’s hands gently.
“Thanks.”
we were robbed by a Mark / Jo friendship and we will stand by that.

Would you please write a fic about alex behaviour with children like the way he comforts them or help them through?
heart of gold
hey there! i’m not gonna lie when i say that this prompt took me forever to figure out, but when i did i was super excited!
this is mainly Alex centric with a bit of jolex added in (obviously). i hope you like it!
___
Of all people to notice Alex Karev’s strange ability to work well with children first, no one would’ve expected it to be Cristina Yang.
It was fairly early in their intern year, and both she and Karev were on the pediatrics rotation with Dr. Keith, someone who they could both agree was an arrogant son of a bitch that thought way too highly of himself for his own good.
They’d been trailing behind him like lost puppies all day, listening to him go on and on while he talked to the patient’s families, not even bothering to ask his interns any questions. He always thought that interns were a waste of time and space. He’s much rather have at least a third year resident on his service, but no such luck. They felt like crap and both wanted to kick the guy in the ass, but knew that the only thing that would do is get them knocked out of the program.
Six hours into their shift, the two were about to head to the cafeteria for a much desired lunch break when their pagers rang out, loud groans escaping their mouths at the noise they had come to detest the last couple of weeks.
All Alex really wanted was a slice of the hospital’s pizza. Granted, the crust tasted like cardboard, the cheese was old, and the sauce had no flavor, but he was craving it like crazy. He hadn’t gone out for groceries recently, so the only thing that was stocked in the shelves of his small apartment was cereal, some oatmeal, and off brand, nearly expired crackers that he had since he finished med school a couple of months ago. He had --for some unknown reason-- shoved them into a backpack that had made it with him as he traveled from Iowa to Washington, completely untouched.
With a huff he turns on his heel and makes his way to the pit where he was being paged, purposefully avoiding eye contact with the nurse he disrespected on his first day, along with the ones he’d slept with and hadn’t called back. He had a pretty large list of nurses who didn’t like him, and he didn’t feel like making that list any longer. Not today, at least.
Keith instructed him to go cast an arm for the seven year old in bed six, while Yang was told to go stitch up the cut on the little girl in bed two.
When Alex was done he passed by Yang’s area, watching as she was trying to calm down the little girl who couldn’t be more than five. The girl had tears streaming down her face and was nuzzled into the mom’s chest. The mother was glaring at the female doctor, who was saying something Alex could make out as “it’s not even scary, it’s just a needle.”
All he really wanted to do was get that damn pizza slice, and he had every intention of doing so, but seeing Yang be absolutely hopeless at getting anywhere with the little girl, he felt a bit of sympathy-- not for his fellow intern, but for the kid.
With a sigh he strides over to the bed, watching as the raven head’s mouth opens to speak, cutting her off immediately. “Let me handle this.” he says, reaching to grab the needle from her head.
Cristina glares at him, her expression turning into one of disgust. No way was she going to let Evil Spawn steal her patient, no matter how much she wished she’d be doing anything else.
“Karev-”
“--Yang!” he cuts her off sharply, plucking the needle from her hand and bumping her out of the way. Not the nicest thing to do, but she was practically terrifying the little girl. There was no way she would trust the doctor now.
His coworker scoffs, huffing a ‘fine’ before she goes to stand back and watch the scene, more than eager to watch the man fail. What good could he do? The girl was crying the second she had taken the disinfectant out.
Alex pulls up a chair, grabbing the attention of the little girl, who looks up from her mother’s chest for a second, only to dive back in right after.
“Hey kid, my name’s Doctor Karev. You mind telling me your’s?” he asks gently, slipping on a pair of gloves and flashing a signature crooked grin.
The girl makes eye contact warily, slightly unlatching from her mom's tight hold at the sight of the man’s smile. The other doctor looked super serious, it was kind of scary.
“Piper.” she answers, wiping the tears from under her eyes, the mom flashing him a grateful smile.
“Hey Piper.” he grins. “I see you got hurt up there. What happened?” he wettens the pad with disinfectant, keeping his eyes on the little blonde, knowing it would mean less questions if she was focused on his face.
“I was jumping on the couch and then I fell and hit the table.” she explains, Alex inspecting the cut to see if her story was reliable. He knew firsthand what it was like to come up with excuses for the bruises on your face, and wanted to make sure that she wasn’t just trying to cover up for something else that happened.
Luckily, the combination of the authenticity of the bruise and the level of trust the daughter had in her mom let him know that she really did do what she said. He knew at some point he was gonna need to not assume the worst in every parent that came in with an injured kid, but the wound was still fresh for him, and it would take some time to heal-- a long time.
“Well then Piper, I’m gonna need to clean your cut, but it’s gonna sting a bit. Is that okay?” he asks her, her green eyes widening, but eventually nodding. The doctor seemed nice enough.
He cleans the wound, turning back at the girl when he pulls out a needle, watching as her face begins to look panicked. “Hey, it’s okay.” he reassures her. His eyes dart around, noticing a backpack that sat in the corner, decorated with a multitude of princesses.
“Who’s your favorite princess?” he asks her, drawing Piper’s attention away from the scary needle in his hands.
“Belle.” she answers, a small smile making its way to her face. She loved talking about the princess’s and would chatter on about them anytime, any day, anywhere.
Alex smirks, letting out a sigh of relief. He knew all about Belle, since it was Amber’s all time favorite Disney movie. He’d seen it more time than he’d like to admit, and practically had the whole film memorized since he was fourteen.
“I like Belle too. She’s super brave huh? Never afraid of the Beast or anything.” he gives her a smile, watching as Piper’s face lights up, a wide, toothless smile splayed on her lips.
“Yeah! She’s so cool! She never lets the beast tell her what to do!” she exclaims, making Alex chuckle. She reminded Alex a lot of his little sister, with her dirty blonde hair, green eyes, and passion for princesses.
“Okay, well, right now I’m gonna need you to be super brave like Belle alright? And sit really really still, like she does when she reads a book. Can you do that for me Piper?” he smirks mischievously.
The little girl grins. She always wanted to be like her favorite princess, so she definitely wouldn’t pass up an opportunity to act like one. She already practiced around the house, so she was definitely going to practice in front of the nice doctor who looked like Prince Philip.
Cristina stood frozenly in the background, mouth opened so wide it could catch flies. Who knew Karev was so good with kids? She sure as hell didn’t.
She watches as he stitches up the cut, saying some reassuring words every time the girl flinches or squeezes her eyes shut. It was about twenty minutes later when he finished, Yang still standing there in shock. She sees him dress the wound, getting up from his chair and say, “All done. You did awesome Piper, but no more jumping on the couch, alright?” which earns him a nod. He flashes a friendly wink to the mom, who blushes as he walks away, forgetting entirely about Yang’s presence as he makes his way to the cafeteria to finally get his hands on the pizza slice he’s been drooling about for hours.
Maybe Evil Spawn wasn’t so evil after all.
~*~
Miranda Bailey was exhausted. Between Tuck and trying to begin a pediatric fellowship, all she wanted to do was lie down and sleep for god knows long. Tucker being difficult about their shared custody schedule seemed to only add to her fatigue and she swore on her life that she could crash on the nearest gurney and not wake up for three days straight.
It was with a heavy sigh she begrudgingly made her way back down to the NICU, remembering that she had left Karev there the day before after administering the kangaroo hold. She knew that by now he had probably dispersed, but she felt like checking on the little baby herself, just to make sure that the preemie was doing okay.
When she arrived at the NICU doors she could see a few faces that she recognized standing outside the window, talking in hushed conversations as they stared at the scene in front of them with imploring eyes, that is, until the one she knew as Reed rushed away-- a friend at her side, finishing their conversation quickly.
Miranda shakes her head. Though she had softened over the years, everyone still feared the inner ‘Nazi’ that came out from time to time. When she finishes gowning herself she makes her way into the room, stopping in front of the shirtless, sleeping figure on a chair. Surprised was the only word she was able to come up with, though it seemed like an understatement of the century. Alex Karev was sitting there, with a sleeping baby curled contently against his chest, her tiny breaths in sync with the man who was holding her.
She shakes her head, stopping a few feet from where the man sat. “Karev?” she says, making him open his groggy eyes, blinking as he does so to look around for the source of the noise, relaxing when he knows that no monitors are going off and the baby on his chest is still very much alive.
“Did you stay here all night?” she asks softly, watching as he looks out the window to see that it was in fact daytime, not evening like it was before he’d fallen asleep.
He takes another look at the baby in his arms, “Um, yeah. I… I guess I did.” he trails off, his voice rough since he barely was awake.
“Go home, get some rest. The nurse will take over for you.” Miranda scolds. These interns (who were now residents) were like her children, her babies, and as much as the sight warmed her heart, she needed her babies to be well rested. She couldn’t have them falling asleep in the middle of surgery.
He unintentionally pulls the tiny bundle of pink a bit closer, “No. Uh, I- I’m okay. I’m… good here.”
She lets out a small, barely there laugh, but not at him. She’d seen the soft side of Alex Karev, but it was few and far between. Everyone knew that the rough exterior he put up was just to stop himself from getting hurt, but this… this side was new. She had never seen him more vulnerable than he was right now, the baby sleeping so soundly on his chest that it seemed like no amount of noise could disturb her.
“Well, you'd be good in Peds, you know that?” she flicks her gaze from him to the baby. “You get invested. You have good instincts. You stick to your instincts,” she continues, Alex looking down at the child, making some kind of face she wouldn’t know how to describe.
“You’d be good in Peds, Karev.” she walks away, leaving Alex alone with his thoughts.
Maybe, just maybe, kids would be the one thing that would allow Karev to show everyone who he really was.
~*~
Alex Karev had sort of snuck up on Arizona Robbins. When he said that he was interested in Peds, she truly thought that he was joking, just trying to say something to either get a laugh out of her or annoy her.
She didn’t know much about Karev, all she really knew was what she had heard from the nurses gossiping loudly at their stations, and the occasional input from Callie here and there. All she really knew was that he had been married to Stevens, who had cancer, then they later got divorced, and before he was married he had earned himself quite a bit of a ‘man-whore’ reputation, nearly as bad as Mark’s.
Arizona was weary about Karev, so imagine her surprise when she saw his face light up as a kid called him Doctor Alex for the first time.
The first time she’d ever had the young man on her service she knew that he was cold, arrogant, and a bit too cocky for his own good. He was overall an asshole, and to say Robbins wasn’t happy to have him on her service was an understatement. Bailey had said something to her recently about Karev, but that didn’t lessen her lack of enjoyment about his upcoming arrival on her floor.
When the man did arrive, he was seven minutes late for rounds, dumping an empty cup of hospital bought coffee in the nearest trash can. He flashed her a crooked grin, apologizing for his tardiness, but not explaining why.
Arizona sighed, rolling her eyes discreetly. She wasn’t normally a strict teacher, but one thing she didn’t like was when her residents were late. The lives of tiny humans were in their hands, no second could be wasted-- much less seven minutes.
“Welcome to peds Doctor Karev…” She starts off, telling him about how pediatrics wasn’t wiping kid’s noses and cuddly bunnies all day long. Peds was hardcore, only for the elite.
She stops outside room 414, turning back to Karev and giving him as stern of a glare as she could muster. “Remember Karev, smile, engage. These are kids we’re talking about here.”
Alex rolls his eyes. He knew he wasn’t the nicest guy. He was an ass, a douche, and definitely not the man most women would be proud to take home to their parents. But if there was one thing he did know, it was kids. He practically raised one for god’s sake.
“Got it Robbins.” he huffs, fixing his posture as the two walk into the room, where a little boy sat on his bed, playing with his colorful toys that sat on his lap, anxious parents sitting in chairs beside him.
Arizona flashes a grin to the family, directing her attention back to the boy. “Hi Nico, how are we doing today?”
Nico shrugs, mustering a half-hearted smile. “I’m okay.” he answers, more focused on his toys than the doctors in the room.
“Well that’s good,” she jots something down on her chart. “This is Dr. Alex. He’s gonna be another one of your doctors, okay Nico?”
“Doctor Alex?” the boy confirms, making Arizona look up from her chart and Alex look back at the boy.
She saw it then. The way his eyes lit up at the name, how a crooked grin unconsciously made its way to his lips. He had it. The peds glow.
“Hey dude.” Alex smirks, trying to hide is bubbling excitement. He liked that name, ‘Doctor Alex’. It was different from Karev. It was lighter, easier, it sounded right. Doctor Karev was too… but Doctor Alex? Doctor Alex sounded pretty great.
Arizona bites her lip as she watches her resident and the patient interact, trying to keep her smile at bay.
There it is. There’s the real Alex Karev.
~*~
Jo Wilson sat in the intern’s locker room, knotting up the ties of her scrub pants as she listened to the chief resident rattle of names of who the intern’s were with that day. She was more than thankful for a new service, since Medusa was downright terrifying, but she was really hoping that she wouldn’t be assigned to-
“--Wilson you’re with Doctor Karev on Peds.”
Shit.
She was sure Karev was a great doctor, I mean, he wouldn’t be here-- at one of the best hospitals in the world-- if he sucked.
But she’d already heard enough about Karev to say that she didn’t like him, not one bit. So far she’d witnessed Leah crying into her locker about why he wouldn’t answer her calls, nurses complain to each other about why he hadn’t texted, and other interns chattering at bars about why he acted like he didn’t know them when they saw each other again.
In conclusion, he was a grade-A jackass who slept with any female that had two legs, and she was certainly not going to be the next one on his (extensive) list of conquests. No sir-ee.
With a huff she ties her hair back, giving Stephanie a deadpan look after she whispers a “Good luck. Make sure not to sleep with him.”
There was no way she would be sleeping with Karev, not in a million years. She had heard so much from others that she could already paint a picture-
Ew, no. That’s gross.
Either way, there was nothing he could ever say to make her fall in bed with him. Nothing at all.
She was exhausted. Karev was an ass. An ass who didn’t hate her, but was still an insufferable asshole. Jo stood at the nurses station, leaning over the counter as she filled out her charts, scribbling down her notes angrily. He made her angry.
Though she had to admit, seeing him all freaked out over her (fake) crying was pretty hilarious.
“--Wilson!” she hears her name being called by her asshole of a superior. She turns around, plastering such a faux smile on her face that she felt nauseated just knowing that it was there.
She’s about to respond when Doctor Grey comes running up to him, shoving a toddler in his arms, taking him by surprise.
“Alex. I need you to watch her.” the blonde pleads, making him scrunch his eyebrows.
“Mer I-”
“Please.” Meredith begs, Alex giving her a crooked grin as he takes ahold of his niece. If there was one thing that could make Alex Karev smile without even trying, it was Zola Grey Shepherd, a two and a half year old little fireball.
A large grin comes across the little girl’s face as she looks at the man in front of her. “Unca Lex!” she exclaims, clasping her tiny hand on the side of his face.
“Hi Ms. Zozo,” he smiles, Jo not even noticing how the corner’s of her mouth quirked up at the sight. This was not the Doctor Karev she’d been with these past few hours, this was someone completely new. This was… Alex?
Meredith sighs. “I have on OB appointment, and normally we’d take her, but she’s just been so fussy lately, and when I tried to take her to daycare she threw a fit-”
Alex cuts her off, “Mer, it's fine. I got her.” he reassures her, pretending to bite the little girl’s finger as it came close to his face, causing her to let out a loud squeal.
“Okay but-”
He rolls his eyes at the blonde, “Mer, go. She’ll be completely fine.” he smirks. “We all know that she likes me better than you and Shep combined so…”
Meredith hits him on the shoulder before she turns and waddles down the hall, leaving Alex with a toddler in his arms that was giggling as he tickled her, and an intern who wasn’t quite sure what she was seeing in front of her.
It was obvious that he had some skills with children, he was a pediatric surgeon for crying out loud. But nobody told her he was this good with kids. She watched as a large smile came across his face, a laugh escaping his mouth at Zola’s squeals and giggles.
Maybe Alex Karev wasn’t as much of an asshole that she thought he was.
~*~
Nothing was more perfect to him than the sight in front of him.
Never in a million years did he ever think that he would get to where he was now.
Alex sat next to his wife as they stared down at the little baby on her chest, her pink cheeks puffed up while her eyes were tightly squeezed closed as she tried to sleep. She was so perfect. So, so perfect.
A daughter.
He had a daughter.
A little bundle of pink that weighed a whole six pounds, seven ounces. Yet somehow, she had managed to take his heart out of his chest and hold it in her tiny, tiny palm.
Nothing could’ve prepared him for how much he already loved his little girl. He’d heard about it, read about it. He’d been in the room when parents met their child for the first time. But this? This was a whole new level of love, something he wasn’t prepared for in the slightest.
He watched as Jo ran her thumb delicately over the baby girl’s cheeks, tears streaming down Jo’s face. It had been all of two minutes since they welcomed their daughter into the world and she hadn’t stopped crying since.
Although he wasn’t crying, his throat was built up as he stared at his perfect little girl. A full head of wavy light brown hair sat on top of her head, her rosy lips pouted as she nestled closer to her mother’s chest.
Perfect.
That’s the only word that could describe the tiny figure that laid before him.
He rubs his pinky finger over her little fist, watching as it unfolds and grabs it with all of her strength.
He can feel his heart physically clench, never before had something felt as right as feeling his little girl’s palm around his finger.
Alex grins, placing a small kiss on the top of Jo’s head, a silent way of saying so many different things at once.
Thank you.
You did so well.
You’re so strong.
She’s so perfect.
I love you.
Thank you for marrying me.
Thank you for loving me.
Thank you for everything.
Thank you.
Jo readjusts the baby on her chest, bringing her up higher for them to see.
She lets out a watery smile, her bottom lips trembling as she stares at the tiny girl that she would do anything for. “Hi sweet girl.” she whispers, not even bothering to wipe the water droplets that cascaded down her cheeks.
Alex lets out a crooked grin, a small laugh escaping his throat in disbelief. This perfect creation was his daughter. How was that even possible?
“Welcome to the world Lorelei Karev.” he whispers, unable to focus on anything except the tiny girl that he would give up the sun, the moon, and the stars for.
“We love you so much.” Jo speaks softly, looking up at her husband, the love of her life, her eyes saying more than her mouth ever could.
Thank you.
I love you.
She’s so perfect.
Thank you for her.
Thank you for everything.
Thank you for loving me.
Thank you.
They share a small kiss, reveling in the moment they knew they would remember for the rest of their lives.
It was then he defied all odds. Overcame all of his fears. He wasn’t going to be like his dad, what everyone told him he was going to be. He was going to be an amazing dad, and he knew it.
As it turns out, kids truly were the one thing that could show everyone who the real Alex Karev was after all.

All Alone: Chapter 6
Jo was now 16 weeks pregnant and today her and Meredith were finding out the gender of the baby. Jo was really wanting a boy because Alex always wanted their first baby to be a boy, but Jo thought it was a Girl. Later that day Jo met Meredith in the lounge. She walked in in sweats and a hoodie. Meredith then said ¨Did you just roll out of bed?¨ Jo laughed ¨No it is the only thing that I can wear without my bump showing.¨ ¨Doesn't everyone know?¨ Meredith said. ¨No¨ Jo said ¨I am scared to tell everyone because then when I tell everyone they will be sorry for me.¨ ¨And you don't want them to feel sorry for you?¨ Meredith questioned. ¨No I don't want anyone to feel sorry for me I want them to be happy for me that I am having a baby.¨ Jo said. Meredith then got up and said ¨Okay then let's go find out the gender of this baby and tell everybody.¨ Jo then grabbed Meredith´s hand and said ¨Yeah lets go.¨ They both then started walking down to the OB floor when Bailey stopped them and said, ``What are you too talking about when you are suppose to be working.¨ Jo faced Meredith. Meredith then mouthed ¨Tell Her.¨ Jo sighed and said ¨I am 16 weeks pregnant Bailey and I have an ultrasound right now and Mer is coming with me because I cry every time I am alone when I have an ultrasound.¨ ¨Okay Congrats. Is it Alex´s baby?” Bailey asked. ¨No I cheated on Alex the day he left.¨ Jo said. ¨Really¨ Bailey said. ¨No It is his baby I found out the day after I got the letter.¨ Bailey then put a hand on Jo´s shoulder and said ¨If you need anything I got you even an extended maternity leave okay?¨ ¨Thank you Bailey and I don't think I need an extend maternity leave and You can tell Ben if you want I am telling people today after I find out the gender.¨ Bailey then walked away and turned around. When she turned around she screamed ¨When you are done get back to work!¨ Jo and Meredith both rolled their eyes. They then continued walking to the OB floor. They got into the room and settled in. Carina then Walked in and said ¨Good Morning You ready to find out if the baby is a bambino or a bambina?¨ Jo nodded in response. Carina put the gel on Jo´s stomach and put the probe on her stomach. She checks the size of the baby, the heart beat and everything you could check. ¨Okay¨ Carina said ¨You are having a little Bambino!¨ ¨Really¨ Jo laughed. ¨Yep there HE is.¨ Carina said. Jo had tears rolling down her cheeks. She just laid there in the thought that she was having a baby boy until the ultrasound was done. When Carina left Meredith asked Jo if she was okay. Jo responded with ¨He wanted our first to be a boy and it is but he won't be here for it.¨ Jo started to sob so Mer pulled her into a hug. Meredith then said ¨You know you could call him but I know you don´t know yet but if you are I would plan to tell him after you have your baby boy because there will be a cute baby keeping him from being mad. Jo and Meredith then went to work and worked all day. Later that night Levi and Jo were talking when there was a knock on the door. Jo got up and opened the door. It was just Meredith, Amelia, Maggie, Link and the kids. Jo said ¨Wow what are you all doing here?¨ ¨We are going to start the baby's corner. We have all of Ellis´s old things we are going to start getting ready for baby boy” Meredith said. ¨Fine come in.¨Jo sighed. Meredith and Link started moving things and Ameila, Maggie, and Levi started building the crib. They made Jo sit on the couch and chill with the kids. Zola was talking to the baby while Ellis kept poking at her bump but Bailey fell asleep on the couch. Zola then asked ¨Aunt Jo what are you going to name him?¨ Jo looked towards here and said ¨I have an idea but it is a secret you will have to wait until he is born.¨ Zola sighed and said ¨Fine¨. For the rest of the night they organized the corner talk and ate a lot of food and all Jo thought about is that her son is so loved already and he is not even here yet and that Alex would be all over her in pregnancy just like they are.

Alex tells Jo about Eli & Alexis immediately after finding out about them
—————————
“Hey so, I wasn’t able to find the chips that you wanted but I did buy some of that ice cream we both really love,” Jo walked into the loft and paused when she saw the distraught look on Alex’s face. “Oh God. What happened? Is something wrong? Did something happen with Meredith’s trial? Alex?”
“Huh?” Alex looked up from where he’d been staring at the floor for the past thirty minutes after he made the phone call that rocked his entire world.
“Alex, what’s going on? Who died?”
“No one—no one died,” Alex shook his head.
“Then why do you look like you’ve seen a ghost?” Jo placed the bags of groceries on the counter and moved to sit next to him on the couch. “Alex. Baby, what’s going on? You’re worrying me. Please tell me. I want to help you.”
“I... I don’t even know how to say this,” Alex buried his head in his hands. He let out a nervous breath. “I have kids. Two of them. Twins.”
“What?” Jo’s eyes bulged. “Oh my God. Who did you—when... Alex did you cheat on me? Or was this when we were broken up? I won’t yell, just please tell me.”
“No, no, Jo!” Alex’s eyes shot up to her terrified expression. “I didn’t cheat on you. I didn’t sleep with someone else. Not even when we were broken up a few years ago. Babe, I haven’t been with anyone other than you in the past eight years.”
“Oh,” Jo sighed in relief. “Okay. So, how...”
“You remember the embryos?” Alex stared up at Jo who looked like she might puke at any given moment. He hated that he was doing this to her. She had just gotten better after a tough depressive episode. Jo didn’t deserve the stress of this burden that was his to bear. But he also knew that she deserved the truth and he’d be damned if he wasn’t completely forthcoming with the one person who’d been there for him through it all. “I called Izzie. I told myself it was just for the trial. To get Mer a letter of support. And at first, that’s exactly what it was. But then we started talking and it felt nice, normal. I felt all the nostalgia while talking to her and I can’t lie to you Jo, but it made me kind of miss her.”
“Oh God,” Jo pressed a hand to her mouth and ran to the trash bin and threw up. She felt Alex come behind her, held her hair, and rubbed her back lightly as he waited for her stop vomiting. Jo took a deep breath and straightened her back. She leaned against the wall and slumped down onto the floor, eyes closed. “You’re going to leave me, right? You’re gonna leave me for Izzie and the babies she has with your face on them. It’s over isn’t it?” Jo lost her fight with her tears. “Well it was good while it lasted, wasn’t it? I should’ve known. You can’t hold on to anything you don’t want to lose.”
“Jo, baby, I’m not leaving you. I swear to God. This doesn’t change the fact that I love you more than life itself, or that I want to be your husband and grow old with you. This changes none of that,” Alex crouched down in front of her and squeezed her knee. “Let me finish what I was trying to say.” Jo nodded at Alex to continue. “Then she told me all about her job as surgical oncologist and all of the things she’d accomplished. I told her how proud I was and shared that I got into peds and that I’m Chief of Surgery at Pac North. I told her all about how I’m cleaning the place up. Then she asked me if I’d met anyone and that’s when I told her about you. About how we met and fell in love and got married, and she was happy for me, for us. Really happy. She was asking me to send her a few of our wedding pictures when I heard them.”
Alex clutched Jo’s hands tightly within his own, “I heard kids laughing in the background, so I asked her if she had kids. She said yes. She has five year old twins, Eli and Alexis Stevens. They’re mine. She used our embryos.”
“She used the embryos. They’re five years old,” Jo repeated, attempting to process the information she’d just been given while staying strong for Alex. “So, it turns out when I found that form all those years ago, you already had not one, but two Izzie babies crawling around with your face on them.”
“Yeah,” Alex had a pained look on his face. “I’m sorry Jo. I should’ve—I should’ve called her years ago. Before we—because then I would’ve—“
“Before we got married,” Jo looked at Alex intensely. “That’s what you were gonna say right? You wish you would’ve known before we got married, or better yet, before we got serious, so that you could be with them. So that you could be their dad and be with Izzie and have the family you always wanted.” Jo wiped a couple tears. “But you didn’t call. I told you to call her two years ago and you didn’t do it. And now you’re stuck with me.”
“Jo, you know that we were never not serious. From the minute I kissed you, I knew you were it for me. I’m not stuck with you. I chose you and I’ll always choose you,” Alex shook his head and stared at their joined hands. “I gave up my rights when we got divorced, so she had every right to use them. But I just keep thinking about how I have kids and I never knew. I just wish I would’ve known. I would’ve done things differently. I wish Izzie would’ve told me. But she didn’t, so now I’ve lost five years of my kids’ lives and I don’t know how to even feel about it. I don’t know if I’m allowed to feel upset about it. I’m basically just their sperm donor.”
“Of course you’re allowed to be upset, Alex,” Jo placed a hand on his cheek. As much as Jo was in pain and as scared as she was to lose him, Jo knew that she had to be there for her husband. “When you and Izzie made those embryos, it was always under the understanding that you’d do it together. You never thought she’d use them after the fact.” Jo took a deep breath. “So, are you going to do anything about this? Are you going to meet them?”
“I don’t know,” Alex shook his head. “Iz said I could go see meet them. They live on a farm in the middle of freaking no where Kansas. They don’t know about me, though. Izzie never told them and they never asked. It’s just her and the kids. Well, she’s got this detective boyfriend now, but he doesn’t try to pretend to be their father.” Alex ran a hand over his face. “It doesn’t matter right now, though. What matters is Meredith’s trial. I can’t—I can’t focus on that and focus on the trial. After the trial is over, maybe I’ll revisit this, but I can’t Jo. I can’t.”
——————
In retrospect, Jo thinks maybe she should’ve thought things through a little better before packing a bag and flying out to Kansas in the middle of the night. It was an impulse decision, and like most impulse decisions, probably not the most wise one. But as soon as she touched down in Kansas at 8am the next morning, Jo knows that she made the right choice.
Jo walked out of her terminal and hailed a cab to take her to the nearest coffee shop or diner. She got dropped off at a small local diner that looked like it had been frozen in the 1960s. Finally mustering up what little courage she had left, Jo took her phone out of her pocket and dialed the number she had been dreading to dial. It rang four times before someone answered.
“Hello?” It was a woman’s voice in the background. “Hello? Can I help you?”
Jo cleared her throat, “Hi. Is this Izzie Stevens?”
“Yes, this is she,” the woman on the other line responded. “Who’s this?”
“Hi. This is uh—Jo, Jo Karev.”
“Oh my goodness,” Izzie’s gasp of surprise was heard over the line. “Jo! Alex’s wife Jo?”
“Yeah. That’s me,” Jo let out a breath. “Look, I don’t want to cause any issues or problems. Alex doesn’t even know that I’m calling or anything, but I was hoping you and I could meet. I’m here in Kansas.”
“You’re—you’re here?” Izzie asked, some shuffling being heard in the background. “Yes, of course. Where are you? Where should I meet you?”
“I’m at a diner in Kansas City. I can send you my location, if you’d like,” Jo suggested.
“Yeah, that’s perfect. I can be there in an hour,” Izzie replied. “I’ll see you soon.”
“See you soon.”
—————
“Jo! What the hell? Where are you? I’ve been trying to get a hold of you for the past ten hours. I woke up and you were gone,” Alex shouted angrily over the FaceTime call. “You didn’t leave a note or anything. No one knew where you were.”
“I know, I’m sorry,” Jo sighed. “I didn’t mean to scare you. There was just… something I had to do.”
“Where are you? Please tell me. Jo, I don’t want to lose you, ever and right now you’re scaring me,” Alex’s brows furrowed. “Just… tell me you’re okay. Tell me that you’re not gonna leave me or hurt yourself.”
“What? Alex, no,” Jo shook her head. “I would never leave you. And I wouldn’t hurt myself. I swear.” Jo bit her lip nervously. “I’m not in Seattle. I caught a flight in the middle of the night last night, to Kansas.”
“Kansas?” Alex’s eyes widened. “What—why—what are you doing in Kansas?”
“I’m in Baldwin City,” Jo answered simply, knowing that Alex would immediately know the exact reason.
Alex’s face grew serious, “Why are you there Jo?”
“I spoke with Izzie. I’m actually in a guest room at the farmhouse right now,” Jo confessed. “I just… I couldn’t stand around and watch you feel conflicted. The trial was a week ago and you still haven’t made a decision about what it is that you want to do. And I’m not trying to rush you, I swear. But, you’ve been there for me when I needed it. You spoke for me when I couldn’t speak for myself. You reacted when I couldn’t demonstrate things effectively for myself. So, I wanted to do this for you. I wanted to come out here and talk to Izzie and tell her all the feelings that you’re not quite sure how to express.”
“I never asked you to do that for me,” Alex had an unreadable expression on his face.
“You didn’t have to,” Jo looked at his face over the video call expectantly.
“So, what’s the verdict?” Alex asked after a couple moments in silence.
“You have really cute kids. Your son looks exactly like you and your daughter might as well be a miniature evil spawn from how Izzie described her,” Jo chuckled and averted her gaze from the screen. “I didn’t meet them. Just Izzie. I didn’t think it would be right for me to meet your kids before you do or before you even knew I was here.”
“Izzie wants me to meet them?” Alex questioned.
“Your kids want to meet you,” Jo stated quietly. “They know about you. They’ve seen pictures. Izzie asked me to send her a few pictures of us two when she and I met. She texted me about an hour ago. Eli and Alexis are very eager to meet Dad and JoJo.” Jo watched as Alex’s face contorted in a variety of emotions. “I bought you a ticket to Kansas City Airport. It leaves first thing tomorrow morning. I hope you’ll take it.”
—————
“JoJo!” Alexis shrieked as Jo opened the loft door, throwing her arms around her stepmother’s now protruding abdomen. “I missed you!”
“I missed you too,” Jo placed a light kiss on the young girl’s forehead. She laughed at Alexis’ widening eyes as her tiny hands were met with strong, powerful kicks. “And it looks like someone else also missed you.”
Alexis pressed her face up to Jo’s belly, “Hi baby. I missed you too.”
“JoJo!” Eli jumped forward and squeezed Jo as best as he could with her round belly in the way. “I couldn’t wait to see you!”
“And I couldn’t wait to see you,” Jo ruffled his hair as he and Alexis went off to play in the living room.
“Hi, Jo,” Izzie smiled warmly.
“Iz!” Jo wrapped Izzie in a hug. “How was your flight?”
“It was pretty smooth, which is surprising considering these two are definitely all Karev,” Izzie and answered and pointed to the twins. “I was convinced they’d pull off some prank or joke that got us kicked off the airline forever.”
“Well, I’m glad the kids didn’t cause you too much trouble,” Jo laughed. “Sometimes I get really worried about this kid’s temperament because Alex and I weren’t exactly the most well-behaved children. At least the twins have you.”
“I wasn’t exactly the best example either,” Izzie shook her head. “I got pregnant at sixteen. As long as I can make it through their teenage years without Alexis getting pregnant or Eli getting someone pregnant, I’ll consider that a victory.”
“Setting the bar really high, I see,” Alex spoke from behind the two women as he walked inside the door with grocery bags in his hand. He leaned down to kiss Jo. “Hey, babe.” And gave Izzie a quick hug. “Hey, Iz.”
“Daddy!!” Alexis and Eli shot up from the couch as soon as they noticed their father had walked through the door and begun to place the groceries on the table.
“Hey kiddos,” Alex lifted the two of them up in his arms and peppered light kisses on their faces. “I missed you guys so much.”
“We missed you too, Daddy!” Alexis squeezed her dad’s head tightly. “Two months is too long.”
“I agree,” Alex grinned.
“You know, that was actually something I wanted to talk to you two about,” Izzie sat down on one of the stools at the table. “I broke up with Carter last month.”
“Oh my goodness. I’m so sorry, Izzie,” Jo placed a hand on Izzie’s arm.
“No it’s okay. It was a mutual thing,” Izzie waved it off. “Anyway, I don’t really have anything left for me in Kansas and my mom is here in Chehalis. Also, you guys have a baby on the way and I’d really love it if Eli and Lex grew up next to their sibling. So, I was thinking that maybe the kids and I could move back to Seattle.”
Jo and Alex exchanged a look before simultaneously answering.
“Yes! That’s a great idea!” “We’d love it if you moved back.”
“Really?” Izzie beamed. “That’s amazing! Okay, I’ll start making arrangements for the move and look into buying a house here. I can’t wait to tell the kids!”
“We can’t wait for you guys to make Seattle your home,” Jo made a little noise of excitement.
————
“What?” Jo asked as she looked up from the book she was reading later that night to find Alex staring at her strangely.
“Nothing,” Alex shrugged and placed his hand on her stomach. “Just thinking about how much I love you and how grateful I am that you’re my wife.”
“Really now,” Jo hummed. “You do know that it doesn’t matter how many sweet words you say to me tonight, we are not having sex. The twins are asleep on the couch in front of us.”
Alex laughed, “I’m not trying to get in your pants.”
“Huh. What a miracle,” Jo raised an eyebrow. “You’re always trying to get into my pants.”
“That’s true,” Alex smiled smugly. “I normally get in them, too.”
Jo slapped his shoulder playfully, “Perv.”
“Seriously, though. I’m very grateful for you,” Alex brought Jo closer to him and looked deeply into her eyes. “If it weren’t for you, those kids wouldn’t be knocked out on our couch and snoring like truckers. If it weren’t for you, I probably never would’ve gotten the balls to go meet them or maybe I would’ve met them and done something stupid in the process. But you went to Kansas and talked to Izzie and assured me that this was a good thing. And it is. It’s the best thing. We have a family, Jo. A real family. And it’s all because of you.”
“I love you,” Jo replied, eyes shining. “And I love our kids.”
“I love you, too.”

Mother-in-law (Part 5)
Hey everyone I decided to write another Part for this multi-chapter. This is the last one, hope you like it. Enjoy!
A big thank you to @angry-slytherin again for beta reading :)
-
Today it's a little crazy in the Karev household. Alex is running around like a headless chicken, cleaning and preparing. Jo is trying to keep the twins entertained while she helps Alex cleaning. They really underestimated how big their new house is and that they need more than a day to clean it completely. They thought it would be done in a day like they used to be with the loft, but nope. They aren't even half done and they have to be at the airport in an hour.
"Ok, Alex screw it. Let's leave it dirty. Pick up the toys and laundry and leave the rest. They will understand." Jo's screaming from the guest bathroom into the hall where Alex is cleaning.
"But it has to be perfect." Alex's shouting back, not noticing that Jo's already walking towards him.
"Why are you so nervous? It's not their first time with us." Jo's softly speaking, hugging her husband from behind, stopping him in his motion.
"I know. But it's their first time in the new house. With their own rooms. And I want them to like it. I want everything to be perfect." He's nervous and tense. Turning around in his Jo's arms, she pulls him into a kiss.
"They will like it. Dirty or not. The loft wasn't that clean all the time either. They know how it is with us. Speaking of them. We really need to go if we want to be at the airport in time. You know your kids need hours until they sit in the car." With a last kiss Jo turns around and puts the cleaning stuff away. Alex puts his shoes on and graby the shoes of his kids.
After dressing the twins, picking out toys for the car ride, packing snacks and buckling them up in their car seats they are finally on the way to the airport.
"Daddy I'm so excited. I missed them." Emery is shouting excited from the backseat.
"You did? I'm sure they missed you too, Emy." Alex answers his daughter, watching her through the mirror.
"Are they staying forever now, daddy?" Shs askes.
"No. Just until the next holidays. Then they visit their mom again."
"Why don't they live with us all the time daddy? We have a big house now. And they have their own rooms."
"That's right, Emy. But remember what mommy told you about coparenting?" Alex's still watching his daughter through the mirror. Her hand is on her chin, making  her fake thinking face.
"It's when the mommy and the daddy are not together and the kids live sometimes with the mommy and sometimes with the daddy, right?" She watches Alex nod and smiles proudly.
"That's right. Good job. And that's why Eli and Alexis aren't living with us all the time. They live with us and go to school here and in their holidays they are with their mom in Kansas." He tries to explain it as simple as he can. Even though he knows that his four year olds are crazy smart, he makes it easy for her to understand.
"I wish their mommy would live here too, then they could be here all the time and play with P and me." She's saying quietly, while looking out of the window, diving into a daydream.
Jo places her hand on Alex's neck ruffling sofly through his hair, smiling at him. With a quick glimpse to the right he smiles back. God he's so thankful that after everything he did he got her back. He was almost certain that he fucked it up this time. After meeting each other again on Christmas at his mom's a few years ago, everything changed for him. He said it in his letter, because it's true, seeing her again made it impossible to walk away from her again. He and his twins moved to Seattle. He took the job offer he got from Bailey and he became a dad for their twins too. They coparented in the beginning and Jo and him started as friends again. They hung out and drank beer, when the kids were asleep. They shared donuts in dark supply closets and had long conversations on park benches, while their kids were playing on the playground. Jo slowly stared trusting Alex again and the love, that was never really gone, came back. They started dating, with Alex taking her to the most romantic restaurants because that was something they left completely out the last time. But they wanted to do it right this time and they wanted to make it work, for their kids. So they started completely new and bought a big new house, with rooms for everyone, a month ago.
+
The airport was overfilled today, with all those people coming from their summer vacations. So they hold onto the peanuts hands a little tighter to not lose them in the crowd of people also waiting for their loved ones. Alex checks his phone for the sixth time now, afraid that his other twins got lost somewhere on their way from the plane to the exit.
"There they are. Don't fuss, daddy they made it home safely." Jo jokes, kissing his cheek softly, then turning towards the exit, waving at the twins. Their little twins jump in excitement for their big siblings return home from Kansas, greeting them with big hugs. Jo hugs them next.
Alex loves that his kids get along so well and that his twins accepted Jo that quickly. He huggs his twins too, than they make their way to McDonald's to eat some lunch. On their drive home the car is filled with chatter and laughter, which not only fills Alex heart with joy, but also Jo's, who's smiling in the passenger seat.
At home they showed the big twins their new rooms and let them unpack.
+
Alexis closes her now empty suitcase as Jo walks by her open room door.
"Hey Jo. Can I talk to you for a second, maybe?" She's asking her kind of stepmom shyly.
"Sure." Jo puts the laundry basket down and walks into Alexis room, sitting down next to her on the bed.
"What's up? Something wrong?" Jo's asking.
"No- well not here. I love my new room. Thank you." The ten year old thanks Jo again with a smile.
"Oh of course, sweety. I'm happy you like it. Your dad wanted to paint it pink first." A laugh escapes Jo's mouth.
"No I love the green you picked. It's ectually my favorite color. But there's something else. I have this friend Taylor. We're best friends since kindergarten, we are very close and tell each other everything. It's just- it feels good to do things together. But I think that I maybe- I think I like him a little more than as a friend." Alexis stars to explain her problem when Jo interrupts her.
"Oh Taylor's a boy. Ok. Sorry. Keep going."
"I think I like him but I don't want to tell him. I'm afraid it will ruin our friendship." She's looking down to her hands sadly.
"Ok. I see. Should I tell you a story?"
Alexis nods without saying a word.
"I had this friend." Jo starts. "We hated each other at first. He was a douchebag. He was mean, called me names, gave me scut to do all the time. One day I lashed out and screamed at him. From that point on we became friends. We went to a wedding together, we got drunk and broke into a hotel room- Ok forget about that- anyway we got closer. We hung out and I started to fall in love with him. But I didn't want to tell him because I was also afraid it would ruin our friendship. So I started dating another guy. He wasn't the nicest so we broke up. My friend was there for me, he took care of me and one night in a dark supply closet of the hospital he told me that he loved me too. And it was the best feeling in the world. We kissed for the first time and it was magic-"
"What happened to your friend? Did you break up and loose him?" Alexis interrupts Jo with her question.
"No. He's still my best friend." Jo tells her with a smile.
"Really? Is it uncle Link?" The girl is a little confused.
"No. It's your dad." Alexis is speechless.
"Wow."
"Sometimes you have to risk something, to get something great. I was really afraid to tell your dad about my feelings but to be honest we already knew what we felt for each other. So if it feels right for you to be with Taylor then tell him how you feel. Maybe he feels the same. Sometimes boys are just as shy as girls when it comes to their feelings. So make the first move maybe it's good in the end."
"Thank you Jo." Alexis pulls her into a tight hug.
"Any time, Alexis. If there's anything you want to talk about you can always come to me. I can listen and I can give advices if you need them." Jo's pulling out of the hug, brushing a lose strand of hair behind Alexis ear.
"Ok. One more thing. Could this maybe stay our little secret for now?"
She's asking sweetly, putting on her best puppy dog eyes, which she obviously doesn't have from her father.
"Sure." How could Jo say no to those.
"I want to talk to Taylor first, than I will tell dad. Ok?"
"Or we tell your dad now and after you told him your secret I will tell him mine." Jo says cheekyly.
"What's your secret?" Alexis askes immediately excited.
"I'm pregnant." Jo whispers happily, waiting for Alexis reaction.
"Oh my God. That's so awesome, Jo." She screams excited, hugging Jo tightly. "Let's go tell dad. He can't be angry at me when he hears he's gonna be a dad again."
"That was my plan." Jo smiles.
Alexis grabbing her hand, pulling Jo out of her room.

Age Rating: 12+
Chapters: One of One
Fandom: Grey’s Anatomy
AN: Hey guys here’s another chapter that takes place immediately after the Birth chapters let me know what you think and I will take One Shot Requests if you have any concerning Andrew DeLuca and Amber Karev or Jolex.
Summary: Amber and Andrew try to decide what to name their baby with Alex and Jo weighing their suggestions. Later Amber talks to Carina.
Words: 2573
Jo Karev walks down the hall pushing Luna Karev in her stroller eager to meet her niece. She would’ve come by sooner, but she was busy assisting Dr. Bailey with a large ovarian cyst on a teenage girl who fainted during sex ed. Now it’s almost midnight and all she wants to do is to enjoy peaceful family time she never had growing up. She sanitizes her hands before entering Amber’s room to find her sitting up in bed opening a box of cookies with DeLuca sitting next to her watching Alex who is sitting in a chair holding the baby sticking his tongue out at her like the fun uncle he already is.
Jo smiles at the sight and speaks in a low voice to not alarm the baby, “Hi someone wants to meet her cousin.” She walks closer until she’s next to Alex who grins at her and introduces the cousins.
“Hey little moon this is your cousin TBD DeLuca.” Jo narrows her eyes at him posing an unspoken question, “Yeah, your auntie Amber and uncle Andrew are still deciding on a name so for now she’s TBD. Look TBD this is your cousin Luna.” Luna looks at the baby inquisitively with a blank face.
Jo gets closer to the baby and sees that instead of a pastel hat they normally give for the babies, she’s now wearing a black one causing her to chuckle, “I see she’s inherited her mom’s sense of style.”
Amber grins, “Yeah what can I say she’s a badass already.”
Jo is still gazing at awe of the baby, “Oh my god she is so beautiful you guys. Dark hair or blonde?”
“Dark I guess his genes beat me on that.”
“But she’s got her mom’s blue eyes. So basically, she’s got all of our best physical features in one package.” Andrew points out causing Alex to chuckle.
“Oh, dude you are so screwed.”
Andrew chuckles in agreement, “I’m already looking into getting a gun locker and automatics to fill it so I can scare the boys away when they come over to pick her up.” Amber chuckles at that, “Yeah laugh now but trust me I know now that your brothers were overprotective for a reason. And they’re probably the reason you didn’t have a teen pregnancy or STD.”
“Or I have sound judgement that came from watching my hormone addled brothers bring in a girl week after week forcing me into the role of a sane person who didn’t think with her genitals.”
“It sounds like when I was growing up with my sister.” Andrew quips, “Except they didn’t date your school friends or exes.”
“And let’s be thankful for that and hope she has better judgement than her aunt and uncle when she reaches teen hood.”
Jo carefully takes the baby from Alex and holds her with a grin, “Hopefully by then you guys will pick a name for her.”
Amber groans at that and explains, “We wanted to wait to meet her but now that we met her, we’re stumped. I mean I test simple names like Emma or Amy but she doesn’t feel like an Emma or Amy. There should be an app for this kind of thing.”
Alex kneels down to Luna in the stroller handing her a toy, “Well hey I might have a suggestion if you’re interested.”
“Please so we don’t look like bad parents and leave the hospital with nothing on the certificate.”
“Well, you know Alex is a pretty good name.” Amber raises an eyebrow at that, “It’s gender neutral in case she doesn’t identify as female, it’s cool and it’s after her favorite uncle.”
Andrew grins shaking his head amused, “You really dug deep for that one, didn’t you?”
“It is just a suggestion.”
Amber looks at the baby for a moment before shaking her head, “No she’s not an Alex, what about you Jo?”
Jo coos at the baby before looking at the couple, “Why don’t you do it the Gilmore Girl’s way? Name her Amber after yourself, guys do it all the time.”
Amber shakes her head immediately, “People kept saying to me Amber is a designated stripper name and I’m not gonna subject my kid to the same torture. So, if you all are thinking Angel, Brittany or Bambi toss it out. What about you Luna? Do you have any ideas?” Luna teethes on the toy absentminded not paying attention causing them to chuckle, “I didn’t think so.”
“Well, how about a character from one of our favorite movies?” Andrew suggests, “I liked Terminator growing up, how about Sarah DeLuca?”
Jo looks at the baby and tries it out, “Sarah DeLuca…no.”
Andrew looks at Amber who’s busy eating her graham crackers, “You love Legally Blonde how does Elle sound?”
“No.”
“Reese?”
“Ugh! No!” Andrew looks at her confused by her disgust and she clarifies, “Reese’s cups.”
“Reese’s pieces.” Jo adds.
“Reese’s puffs that girl will be picked on in the schoolyard.” Alex states.
“It’s just an idea that’s all.” Andrew looks at the baby in Jo’s arms, “We really should name her before we leave though.”
Jo chuckles and speaks to her niece in a baby voice, “Don’t worry TBD if your parents are still clueless by the end of the day Aunt Jo will sneak in and put her own name on the certificate.” Jo grins and puts the baby in Andrew’s arm causing him to grin at his daughter. Amber looks at the baby inquisitively before shaking her head.
“No she’s not a Jo.” Amber adjusts the black hat on her small downy head.
Andrew grins and nods, “No you’re not a Jo.” He cradles the baby who gets fussy and starts to cry.
“Oh no I think she’s hungry, come here baby.” Andrew hands the baby to Amber that immediately stops her crying as Amber holds her against her chest. Amber pulls her gown down one shoulder so she can nurse the baby shocking Alex.
Alex quickly stands up and looks away, “Whoa! Okay I um I should go come on Luna bear let’s leave your aunt to her um business.”
Amber chuckles at her brother’s reaction as the baby’s head covers her pregnancy swollen breast from his and Jo’s sight, “What are you 13? You’re a doctor and this is the natural order of things don’t shame me for giving my baby her nutrients.”
Alex coughs and looks down so he can avoid looking at her feeding the baby directly, “I don’t shame mothers for breastfeeding I just don’t feel like looking at my sister with her chest out even if there’s a baby attached to it.”
“He’s got a point babe.” Andrew says to Amber too distracted feeding the baby.
Amber rolls her eyes at the men, “Oh come on dude you used to give me baths.”
He still looks down, “Yeah when you were two.” He turns to Jo who’s stifling her laughter at the conversation, “Jo, are you good to stay so I can take Luna home?”
Jo grins at him trying to avoid eye contact with Amber, “Yes, I’ll carpool with Link and he can drop me off later. You two go and get some sleep I’ll see you in the morning.”
“Great thanks. Congratulations again tell the hopefully will be named soon baby uncle Alex sends his love.” He takes the stroller and exits the room with Luna in toll. Jo and Amber look at each other in amusement as TBD enjoys her breakfast straight from the breast with Andrew eating a graham cracker out of the box.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I woke up after I fell asleep to find the sun rising from the window. Andrew left to put the finishing touches on the nursery and I take advantage of a good night’s sleep predicting it’ll be the last one I get for a while now. I hear a baby gurgle and a female with an Italian accent singing low. I sit up and find Carina DeLuca sitting in a chair holding my daughter marveling at her new niece and singing something in Italian. She looks up and smiles at me.
“Buongiorno.” I grin at her as I rub my eyes, “I wanted to see my new niece before I left, where’s Andrea?”
“He’s putting the final touches in the nursery. We got a diaper table a week ago when we thought we had a few weeks before we had something to put on top of it. Now he’s assembling it and I am praying it doesn’t fall apart and we’re forced to change her in either the kitchen or bathroom counter.” Carina sings to the baby again, “That sounds nice.”
“I used to sing it to Andrea when he was little. I’m sorry I wasn’t here earlier I was busy at the station helping with inventory for the clinic and then…”
I see her smile dying down a bit as she looks at my daughter with longing eyes, “And what? Is everything okay?”
“No, I’m fine it’s just that I took a pregnancy test today.”
My eyes widen at that revelation and I tread carefully, “And it was…?”
“Negative.”
I tsk at that, “I’m sorry I know how much you and Maya want a baby but don’t worry there’s always next time. And until then you guys can be the cool, badass aunts who will watch her when Andrew and I need some alone time.”
Carina sighs in despair rocking the baby gently, “At the rate my marriage is going I’m not sure bringing an innocent baby into it is what I want anymore.” I look at her confused and she elaborates further, “Maya has mental health issues.”
“Ah.” I nod knowing full well what she is going through right now.
“And I have lived most of my life living with people with mental health issues and I am good at it. But being in a relationship with someone with mental health issues is something else it’s…no I am not bringing my marital problems on what should be a happy day.” Carina sniffles and looks down at the baby smiling, “I’ve had a bad day but now it’s a good day because even though I don’t have a baby and my wife isn’t here I have a niece I am going to love and spoil for the rest of her life. Isn’t that right bambina?” Carina coos at the sleeping baby.
I sit up further and look her in the eyes so I can help her with her dilemma, “You know it’s okay to be sad about your wife and happy about your niece at the same time. It’s wishful thinking for us to feel one thing our entire lives.”
“Please don’t let me bother you with my problems. It’s not something you should concern yourself with along with new motherhood.”
“I grew up with a schizophrenic mom, a brother who inherited the illness and a husband who lashed out at me when he inherited his father’s illness. I am literally the only person in this world who has insight into your specific problem.” Carina purses her lips at our similarities, “Look you and Maya whatever you’re going through you’ll get through it. I know how frustrating it is to deal with your partner’s problems while they ignore it and take it out on you. The mood swings, the verbal abuse, the questioning where your relationship stands, I have been through it with your brother. It was hell and there was a point where I hated him for doing to me what my mom and brother did to me. I’ve been where you are and the road ahead is not easy, it’s messy and ugly and you’ll feel like your going crazy along with Maya.”
Carina tears up at that and wipes a stray tear while holding my baby, “Is this you trying to make me feel better? Because it’s not working.”
“A messy road like that forced me and Andrew to fight for our relationship and it took a while and I had to tackle a lot of my issues my family put on me. But we came out on the other side stronger than ever. We wouldn’t have done that if the love we shared wasn’t worth it and if we didn’t do that then that little girl wouldn’t be here right now.” Carina grins with tears glistening in her eyes as she looks down at the beautiful baby girl, “Don’t give up, if the love you and Maya have is stronger than your problems then you two can survive this.”
Carina grins grateful to me, “When did you become an optimist?”
“It’s probably the hormones left over.” Carina laughs at that rocking the baby gently.
“Ah bambina you’re not even a day old and your already so popular.” I grin at the baby thinking how much luckier she was than me and thankful I’m giving a good and loving life to her, “I just wish mine and your papa’s mama was here to see you. Your nonna Lucia would have loved you so much and you’d be the most spoiled granddaughter in the world. I’m just grateful to have you in my life now and I’ll be your favorite zia and I’m not gonna tell your aunt Jo.” I chuckle at that and we sit there looking at the baby marveling at the new life. And it was at that moment I knew what to name her.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Andrew enters Amber’s patient room in his casual gray thermal shirt and jeans since it’s his day off. He finds Amber finishing breastfeeding the baby putting her hospital gown back over her shoulder and the baby looks satiated.
“Hey how are my girls doing?” He grins at them as he sits down next to Amber.
“We’re good she’s already nursing like a pro. Do you want to go to daddy? Let’s go to daddy.” Amber smiles as she carefully hands the baby to Andrew who smiles as he holds her causing the baby to make baby noises and looking up at Andrew with her blue-green eyes that she got from Amber which makes Andrew’s heart swell even more.
“Hi TBD.” Andrew happily greets her, “Oh god we gotta pick out a name otherwise she’s gonna hate us like we hated our parents.”
Amber grins, “I have a name actually, I wanted to run it by you and see what you think.”
“Okay lay it on me let’s see if it’s the one.”
“…Lucia.”
Andrew freezes as soon as he heard it and looks at Amber surprised, “That’s my mother’s name.”
Amber grins at him and explains, “When Carina came by, she kept saying how she wished your mother was here to see her and that’s when I knew what her name was.”
Andrew chuckles softly as a bittersweet ache squeezes his chest. He looks down at the sleeping baby and kisses the top of her small head, “It sounds perfect, Lucia DeLuca.”
Amber nods, “Yeah but maybe we should call her Lucy, doesn’t she look like a Lucy?”
Andrew grins, “She does she very much does.” He continues rocking the baby and turns to Amber with love in his eyes, “I love you; I love both of you thank you for giving me this.”
Amber smiles lovingly, “We love you too.” They then kiss and enjoy this blissful moment with their daughter, Lucy DeLuca.

I’ve stumbled back onto the Jolex tag for the first time in years and it seems I’ve missed a lot but glad to see you’re still writing! Congrats on a new house - impressive life milestone at your age. Do you still take fic requests? Arizona returning has sparked lots of ideas in my brain. Eg, if Jo had Alex’s baby all those years ago, would Arizona be the one to play fix it now?
What happened with the group chat? Sad to hear that’s fallen apart a bit - I hope there were still some nice ones in the mix. I can see some of them have even deleted or removed their content.
Thank you Anon, It does feel like a big accomplishment. Although I've been very grateful that my new job has allowed me this opportunity and pays me well!
I'm not taking any requests right now, but that is a very interesting idea. It's still very stressful and I’m super busy! However, I do have a little free time now that all the paperwork is over and I can just move. So we'll see what happens!
I am not surprised to hear that about the group chat. It was a very toxic environment. Although they were mostly adults, a lot of them acted like high school mean girls. I left or, I was rather kicked out because they took my words out of context and claimed I was ableist. Despite my explanation of what I meant and my sincere apology.
I don't miss them. I have new friends and new group chats that are far more supportive and healthy.

The on call room she’d found is quiet, exactly what she needs after the past 48 hours of her life. Jo takes a deep breath as she leans against the wall, willing her tears to stay back. The door opens and she attempts to put on a brave face but her facade falls when she sees Alex in front of her. Relief courses through him as he shuts the door behind him, eyes locked on Jo as he steps ever closer.
“Hey.”
Jo smiles, but it doesn’t quite reach her eyes. Alex wants to reach out and touch her, but her demeanor clearly tells him she’s not open to the idea. She sighs, turning to look out the window that’s streaked with rain, “This place looks so different in the dark.”
“Yeah,” Alex lets a sigh of his own out, one hand rubbing against his neck as he tries to choose what he wants to say to her. It’s not that he doesn’t know what he wants to say but more so he’s deciding what isn’t going to make Jo run for the hills. “You think the tree ruined my couch?”
Jo can’t help the laugh that slips through her lips at the words. Surely Alex knows the answer to that, “I think it ruined your entire living room. You’re lucky the twins weren’t home.”
Alex grins, but just like Jo it’s not convincing enough. His mind now swirls with thoughts of Alexis and Eli and if they’re still sleeping down in the daycare. He thinks back to when he first found out about their existence, how one unassuming day in July had changed his whole entire life.
They had been trying for months with no results. He wanted to stop, Alex couldn’t stand the disappointed look on Izzie’s face everytime she took a pregnancy test that ended up only showing one line. He loved Izzie more than anything, he hated seeing her hurt. But she wanted a baby, she wanted everything with him and who was he to deny her. So he let her continue to torture herself month after month until finally she became fed up and declared she was going in for fertility testing.
That’s when it had all gone wrong.
Her doctor had run a few blood panels and then called both of them into her office. The day was still fresh in Alex’s mind even almost five years on. How the older woman had told them that Izzie was finally pregnant, but that her labs had revealed something else besides just a baby.
Izzie had cancer. And it was spreading quickly.
Refusing to give up the child that she wanted so badly Izzie decided right then in the doctors office to forego treatment to continue her pregnancy. When they went home that night Alex begged her to take the treatment and assured her that they could try again or adopt or anything else. But Izzie was adamant that the baby they’d been given was a blessing and that she didn’t want the treatment.
Alex let her make the decision, despite how his brain told him to keep fighting with her. That night they crawled into bed and as he held his wife Alex prayed that things would turn out okay for them.
One week later at Izzie’s first appointment, they were both shocked to find out that they were having twins.
Immediately Alex began charting out worst-case scenarios, knowing that twins would take an even larger toll on Izzie’s already fragile body. He was a doctor for god’s sake, he knew the risks of both pregnancy and cancer. But he never said anything, he simply supported Izzie and helped her the best that he could. As her pregnancy progressed and her cancer worsened it became evident that everything Alex had ever held dear was holding on by a thin thread.
Izzie was admitted to the hospital when she was almost 19 weeks. She was on strict bedrest orders until the twins were delivered, her body barely supporting her let alone the two babies sucking all of her energy. Alex spent every waking moment of his life at the hospital for ten weeks, barely seeing the sun for more than a few moments a day. When he wasn’t working or operating he was sitting at his wifes bedside, only leaving to get the nursery ready at Izzie’s insistence.
They day that Izzie hit 28 weeks Alex went up to visit her after he finished rounds like he’d made a habit of doing. Her room was empty, the bed was gone and there were medical supplies littering the floor. His heart had dropped out of his chest as he raced to the OR. He stood in the gallery motionless, Meredith on one side and Cristina on the other as he watched his wife flatline.
The only thing that kept Alex upright and on his feet was that the twins hadn’t been delivered yet. He watched in slow motion as one then two impossibly tiny babies were held up high, tiny high-pitched screams echoing from them as they were placed into incubators and rolled out of the OR. As soon as his children were out of sight Alex collapsed to the floor, sobs wracking his body not only for his wife but for their son and daughter who she had sacrificed so much for but would never get to meet.
From the moment he first held his children in his arms his whole life had been about them. Every day from the moment he woke to the moment he fell asleep all he thought about was Alexis and Eli and if they were okay, if they were happy, if they felt loved. He tried to be as present as he could, always playing Legos with them or reading them as many stories as he possibly could before they fell asleep at night. That’s the only life Alexis and Eli have known over the past five years, one with their dad there for every single minute of their lives and stories of their mom coming from him and the many aunts and uncles they have around the hospital.
But now, now Alex thought of other things. When he woke up he would wonder if he and Jo would have a case together, if she would scrunch up her nose when he told a bad joke. He fell asleep sometimes thinking of her laugh and the way she would always tease him. When his kids ran through the house screaming he would fight off the urge to tell them to quiet down in case they woke Luna up, even when her and Jo weren’t visiting. He couldn’t help the way his mind always drifted to Jo.
And so now he stood across from her, eyes wide and heart open ready to tell her that he wanted her. He wanted everything with her and even though it scared the shit out of him he knew he had to tell her.
“Listen, I have to tell you something,” as soon as the words leave Alex’s mouth he knows they’re wrong. Jo looks at him and blinks up silently and she’s scared. She’s terrified of what he’s going to say and it’s clear as day on her face.
“No, you don't,” Jo shakes her head, taking a step back from Alex. Her heart is pounding and she can’t help the way she settles her hand above it as if to slow the beats.
“You don't even know what I'm gonna say,” Alex huffs, as if he’s right. But he isn’t because Jo knows what three words he’s going to say. Three words that will ruin their friendship, that will have her running out the door before he can finish the phrase.
“I think I do, and you shouldn't.”
“Jo…,” Alex wants to scream it from the rooftops, his feelings for her. But he also wants to make sure he doesn’t scare Jo because she happens to be the most important thing in his life besides his kids. “Please?”
“No way, I'll mess it up, Alex. I mess everything good in my life up, and... and we have kids. Both of us. We have three kids and they’re already messy enough without whatever this is between us. Okay? Things are already messy and we work as friends really well and our kids get along, well as much as an infant and some really adorable five year olds can. But I… I don't wanna mess that up. I can’t mess something else up for Luna, I can’t do that to her.”
Jo's journey to motherhood was full of hardships and started with a turbulent marriage. Fresh out of med school Jo had married Paul, her former professor who had gotten her a job at Mass Gen. She was riding a high of graduation, a new job at a prestigious hospital, and a brand new marriage that she missed all the signs. The passive-aggressive behavior, the need to check her phone, the constant control over every aspect of her life. She had pushed her worries aside at first, hoping that she was overreacting. She loved Paul, she wanted everything with him and she wouldn’t let her stupid worries ruing that. By the time Jo had finally taken notice of how bad things had gotten it had been almost a year and she had added ‘get kicked around before bed’ to her daily routine.
She’d finally had enough, ten months into their tumultuous marriage to Paul Jo had made a plan to leave him. And then she’d gotten sick. By the fourth morning of being hunched over the toilet, she’d known that there was no leaving now. Or maybe it was more important than ever to leave, but Jo couldn’t be certain. Not when she could barely keep enough food down to support her already frail body.
Paul had been… Confusing. When she’d first told him he’d cried and promised to take care of her and their child. And he had, really. He’d taken her to her appointments and made sure she ate well. If he was in a particularly good mood he would hold her hair back while she puked or bring her a water bottle. Jo was sure that whatever version of Paul she was dealing with would be gone in a flash.
And he was.
She was almost seven months along and they’d just found out that they were having a girl. Jo had wanted to be surprised, but Paul had convinced the ultrasound tech to tell them at her appointment much to her dismay. The thought kept Jo up at night, sleep evading her as she turned the idea of a little girl with her bright hazel eyes falling to the same fate as her at the hands of her father over and over again in her head.
She couldn’t sleep, she had stopped attempting to after the first three nights. Instead, she sat in the living room, the TV droning on as background noise to the intrusive thoughts about her daughter that plagued her.
Daughter.
The word evoked so much feeling in Jo. She’d never had anyone call her their daughter. How could Jo care for her daughter when she never had a mom? How could she love her daughter when no one had ever shown her the love a daughter should receive? These thoughts kept her up too, the fact that she still had yet to form an emotional bond with the baby that was beginning to roll around in her womb. Despite the fact that she still felt indifferent about her child, she knew that she couldn’t let her go through what she had.
She needed to leave.
She needed to but she couldn’t.
It was nine days after the news had come to Jo that Paul’s attitude flipped. She’d been up all night sitting with her thoughts and was just coming upstairs to slip into bed so that Paul wouldn’t assume that anything was wrong. As soon as she’d stepped onto the second-floor landing he’d been in front of her, yelling and screaming about how he knew she was cheating on him and that’s why she wasn’t in bed. How the baby she was carrying wasn’t his and that he should’ve ‘taken care of the problem’ when he had the chance.
As soon as his voice raised Jo knew she was screwed. Whatever white picket fence life Paul had tried to convince her she wanted disappeared in a flash.
Jo prayed. She never had before but she found herself praying and begging whatever God was out there to watch over her daughter, to keep her safe and not let any harm come to her.
In a single instant and three distinct moves, Jo’s life changed forever.
One. Her daughter kicked against her palm, the movement reminding Jo she wasn’t alone.
Two. Jo’s heart burst wide open and a rush of love for the baby growing inside of her filled her chest.
Three. Paul’s hands found her shoulders and Jo went tumbling down the stairs.
She doesn’t remember much after that, blurry scenes from the next few days clouding her memory.
Jo knew Paul called 911, had cried and begged them for help.
Jo knew that she’d pleaded with the EMTs to save her daughter, to not let her get hurt like she had.
Jo knew Paul was walked out of the house in handcuffs, his volatile words flying through the air.
Jo knew that her daughter was ripped from her body as soon as she made it to Mass Gen, the too small infant being whisked away from her before she even had a chance to ask if she was okay or not.
Jo knew that her body was broken and bruised, hurt beyond anything that Paul had put her through before.
Jo knew without a shadow of a doubt that her life would never be the same.
When she woke two days later, mind foggy and body aching, all Jo could feel was fear. The nurse at her side assured her that she was okay, that her daughter was in the NICU and she was doing fine.
(She’d also whispered under her breath that Paul was in prison and that multiple women had come forward when Jo’s story had been plastered over every media outlet in Boston)
Before she could process what the nurse had told her, Atticus Lincoln was standing in the doorway of her hospital room, sheepishly explaining that while Paul was her emergency contact he was still her next of kin. Jo hadn’t seen him in almost two years, not since Paul had unceremoniously kicked Link and all of her friends out of her life.
The sight of her best friend, of her brother, brought fresh tears to her eyes and her heart leapt as Link moved forward to hug her. Jo was bruised and broken but doing well considering what had happened.
“Have you seen her?”
Jo didn’t need to specify who she was talking about as Link immediately got his phone out and pulled up a photo for her.
“She looks just like you.”
The moment she saw the tiny baby in the incubator for herself Jo knew that she could never not love the little girl in front of her. Her tiny hand had curled around Jo’s finger and the tears had come instantly. She proudly declared to Link that she felt as if her daughter had hung the moon and stars for her.
“So what, you’re gonna name her Moony?”
As Link laughed in the background a small smile lit her face up.
“No. Link, I’d like to introduce you to Luna Grace.”
The next few months weren’t easy on Jo. Link took a sabbatical from his new ortho fellowship to help her get on her feet. Her physical recovery was long and gruesome, her body almost unrecognizable as she looked in the mirror every day. Her mental battle was even harder, the horrors and atrocities of her marriage and her past quickly coming to light as she truly tried to better herself for her daughter.
Luna quickly became the best part of her days. After physical therapy and regular therapy, Jo would make her way down to the NICU to visit Luna. For being born at 28 weeks the little girl quickly proved to her mom and Link that she was a fighter. Every day there was more and more progress and all of the nurses continued to compliment Jo on her daughter’s growth.
After Jo was released from the hospital but before Luna was, their case went to trial. The day had been nerve-wracking, Paul’s ice-cold stare had followed her across the courtroom and she could almost hear his venomous words hurled at her.
In the end, Paul had gone to prison for two counts of attempted murder, not including the dozens of women who were waiting to testify against him now. As he was walked out of the courtroom Jo took her first deep breath in what felt like decades.
“You know, Luna is going to be discharged soon.”
Jo turned to Link, the two of them sat across from each other next to Luna’s incubator. She was cooing and making a variety of noises, clearly an attempt to redirect the conversation back toward her.
“Yeah, her doctor said by the end of the month. Why?”
“You both deserve a fresh start, Jo. Boston can’t give you that.”
Link leaned forward as Jo’s expression mirrored one of confusion.
“Come back with me to Seattle. You’re brilliant, you’ll be able to land a job with me at Seattle Grace in no time.”
The decision really made itself. Jo knew that Link was right, that Boston would not be a welcoming home for her or for Luna. And so, five weeks later Jo found herself seated on a plane with Luna squeezed between her and Link headed for a fresh start in Seattle.
“You won't mess anything up. And our kids already love each other, you know that. Alexis can’t stop talking about Luna and Eli is determined to get her walking before the end of the year,” Alex takes a step forward and when Jo doesn’t step back he reaches out, taking her hand in his. “Last night, before the tree, you asked me a question. You wanted to hear me say the words and honestly, that scared me.”
“Alex…”
“I haven’t said… that to anyone since Izzie and it scared me but,” Alex takes a deep breath and meets Jo’s gaze, both of them filled with an odd mix of fear and excitement. “The longer I thought about it the more it felt real, felt right. And you’re right, we work well as friends and we have kids but I know there’s something there.  So I'm... Saying the words right now.”
And Alex was right, he and Jo were the perfect team. From the moment they met they’d worked in perfect tandem, always anticipating the others next move in and out of the OR. The first day they’d met Jo had been in the middle of what was supposed to be a routine c-section, Alex waiting to take the baby who was five weeks early. Things had been going fine, Alex was checking over the infant and Jo was closing up when the monitors began to ring out around them.
“Shit… can someone page general? I need another set of hands here,” Jo was working frantically, knowing she had done everything by the book but hoping against hope that she hadn’t accidentally ruined her first solo c-section.
Alex, who had already confirmed that the infant in his care would be fine to go to the NICU without any complications, hopped up, immediately coming to Jo’s aide, “I’m here, what do you need?”
Truthfully Alex was expecting a fight, he hadn’t worked with Jo yet but he’d heard stories already of how she was a firecracker who didn’t take shit from anyone. He was pleasantly surprised when she pointed out where the hemmorage was and they both worked to control it. The issue solved itself quickly and once he was sure that she’d be okay on her own again Alex left to check on his own patient who was already heading to the NICU.
“You’re good, not that I doubted it but it’s nice to see the evidence for myself,” Jo’s voice had shocked him later that night when she’d sidled up next to him as he finished a chart. Looking back now he’s sure that he looked like an idiot when he turned to her. They’d only met in the OR where Jo had been gowned up with her surgical mask and cap on. In the hallway though she stood in her dark blue scrubs with her hair in two identical braids, wide hazel eyes staring up at him and pert pink lips curving into an amused smile. “Jo Wilson, I know we worked together earlier but I figured a formal introduction was needed.”
“Alex Karev, nice to meet you,” while Jo had indeed noticed Alex staring at her, she couldn’t help but reciprocate the action herself. Out of his surgical gear he was downright gorgeous with his chiseled jawline and the scruff along his cheeks. “You came from Mass Gen?”
Jo nodded, but before she could respond one of the nurses in front of her interrupted, “Doctor Wilson, the daycare is paging you. Sounds like your daughter might have been injured.”
Jo was off and running before the nurse had finished talking. Alex, who had nothing better to do at almost 8 PM, had followed her into the elevator. It wasn’t until the metal doors shut that she’d turned to him, “Where are you going?”“The nurse said your daughter is hurt, I’m a pediatric surgeon,” Alex shrugged, sticking his hands in his pockets. He suddenly felt nervous, like maybe he shouldn’t have followed Jo. “Figured I might be of some help.”
Nothing else was said on their elevator ride, both doctors standing in silence until the doors slid open on the ground floor. Alex kept up with Jo’s quick pace, even sprinting after her when loud wails began to echo through the halls as they got closer to the daycare. When they arrived, one of the daycare workers was holding an infant who’s face was bright red as she continued to cry.
“Luna’s been fussy all day but she just spiked a fever about half an hour ago,” the worker’s words were hurried as Jo brought Luna into her arms. “I don’t know what happened.”“What happened is you should’ve called me hours ago,” Jo’s voice was biting as she checked over her daughter was was still crying. Alex understood Jo’s frustration, had been there many times himself, but he felt compelled to comfort her.
“Can I look her over? I promise I know what I’m doing,” Alex’s kept his voice calm and low as he placed a hand on Jo’s back. She looked up at him with teary eyes and he could feel the fear radiating off of her. “Jo, she’s gonna be okay.”
Jo followed him without question as he headed toward the ER just around the corner from the daycare. Alex commandeered a triage room and began to look over Luna, who was whimpering in Jo’s arms as her mother attempted to calm her down.
“She’s six months old but she was born at 28 weeks. So it’s been really hard for me to trust anyone with her, let alone try and get through a work day,” Alex realizes that Jo is sniffling too now. “I just… if something is wrong, after everything we’ve been through, I don’t think I’d be able to live with myself.”
“My twins were born at 28 weeks too, so I understand where you’re coming from,” Alex grabbed an otoscope from the counter, checking both of Luna’s ears quickly. “That would be it, double ear infection. Should clear up with antibiotics and some TLC.”
Jo let out a heavy sigh before breaking into a round of cries herself, shoulders shaking as she held Luna to her chest. Alex set his tools down, unsure of whether to comfort Jo or give her some space. Jo chose for him, her entire history with her ex husband and Luna’s birth and how they came to Seattle spilling out before she could stop it. She still doesn’t know why she chose to share the most traumatic events of her life with Alex so easily but she did.
Alex in turn shared the story of Alexis and Eli’s birth and by the time they’ve both opened up Luna was fast asleep in Jo’s arms and there were tears on both of their cheeks. Despite only meeting hours earlier, Jo and Alex had quickly formed a bond that wouldn’t soon be broken.
“Alex,” Jo’s voice is barely above a whisper as they stand across from each other in the on call room. “I don't hear anything.”
“Shut up,” Alex grumbles, a deep breath leaving him as he fixes Jo with a gaze that has her heart beating faster.
“Okay, but I-”
“I'm serious Jo.”
“Fine.”
There’s silence around them as Jo and Alex stare at each other, Alex steeling his nerves and Jo smirking up at him. Finally, his lips part and the words Jo had so desperately been telling herself weren’t coming hang in the air.
“I love you. I love you and Luna and the dynamic we all have together and I want… I want you, I want us and our family, I was everything with you Jo. I love you.”
And it’s true, Alex loves Jo. It hit him weeks ago, and almost knocked the wind out of him with such a monumental feeling for a moment so mundane.
Jo had brought Luna over and they hadn’t even been there for five minutes before Alexis and Eli had dragged her off to the playroom and insisted that she play dressup with them. The day was burned into his mind, the way he peaked in down the hall to find Jo in a tiara and a feather boa while Alexis served her ‘tea’ and Eli asked her about her life as a princess. Jo was speaking in a fake British accent while she let Alexis put more sparkly clips into her hair and it hit him then.
He loved her.
Alex loved Jo in the way he loved Izzie once upon a time, in a way he didn’t think he would ever love anyone again.
At first it had scared him but ultimately it ignited a fire inside his chest that he couldn't wait to watch grow ablaze. The love he felt for Jo had consumed him in all of a second and he let the feeling overtake him.
And then Luna had crawled across the floor to him, tugging on the leg of his pants. He’d hoisted the almost one year old onto his hip and Luna had cuddled into him immediately, her blonde curls splaying against his shoulder as she hugged him tightly and he realized with a start that Jo wasn’t the only person that he loved.
Because he loved her daughter too, who fit so easily into his life and his heart, who slipped in alongside her mother.
The air in the on call room changes and both of them let out a deep breath, Jo not hesitating even a second as she throws herself into Alex’s arms and lets her lips brush against his. His hands find purchase on her hips and their bodies are pushed so closely together that they can feel the other breathing. Jo finally pulls back, her forehead resting against Alex’s.
