DRACULA, A COMEDY OF TERRORS
Starring Jordan Boatman, Arnie Burton, James Daly, Ellen Harvey and Andrew Keenan-Bolger.
Written by Gordon Greenberg and Steve Rosen.
Directed by Gordon Greenberg.
Playing at New World Stages – Stage 5 – 340 West 50th Street – New York. Run: Through January 7th, 2024.
A New Live Production, Dracula, A Comedy of Terrors, Reveals A High Camp Side to this Story of The Undead Count
One thing you can count on every Halloween is an appearance of Dracula or, at least, some form of a vampire added to the mix. That could mean a re-run of the many classic films with the undead count such as Universal’s original version of Dracula (with Bela Lugosi) or Hammer’s The Horror of Dracula (with Christopher Lee). But this scary season doesn't necessarily require an appearance of the original bloodsucker himself. It could include some resurrection of his character in a movie, play or live visual presentation in some haunted house.
In 1897, when Irish author Bram Stoker published his long-wrought novel Dracula for just six shillings, he didn’t realize that he’d created one of the most iconic figures of all time. Though this story of an aristocratic, undead mastermind was popular in its day, little did Stoker know that his blood-drinking, soulless monster of the night would become the source of countless permutations, reinterpretations, and re-examinations of this creature and its implications. There’s even a Bram Stoker Festival in Dublin which celebrates the Gothic, the supernatural, the after-dark and Victorian as well as the Count himself.
Of course, along with Stoker’s horror classic, the inevitable humorous satires, parodies, and various send ups cropped up. From a tale of the ageless Count needing to leave his ancient homeland to resettle in England to tap fresh blood, the original gothic narrative has often been revised with sometimes hilarious results.
Now, through Dracula, A Comedy of Terrors, this battle with the master of the undead receives an outlandish rethink. Enabled by a compact, five-person cast – Jordan Boatman, Arnie Burton, James Daly, Ellen Harvey, and Andrew Keenan-Bolger – this rapid-fire comedic reimagining of this archetypal tale garners guffaws and lots of snickering.
Taking off from the original’s classic characters, they’re transformed into these versions: sweet Lucy Westfeldt, vampire hunter Jean Van Helsing, insect consumer Percy Renfield, and behavioral psychiatrist Wallace Westfeldt, among others. Here they find themselves in a faux British country estate which doubles as a free-range mental asylum. With its cast of slapstick, quick change comics who switch roles with the aplomb of fast handed pickpockets, this Dracula not only makes you scream, but it does it with laughter. The show also exposes a fundamental ridiculousness that illustrates just how resilient the original concept is: it can take jabs even at its core of terror and still retain a certain majestic-ness.
Through its compact 90-minute show, elements of goth, camp, and variant sexuality are thrown into a gender-bending, quick-change romp. With all the wacky characters, a pansexual Gen-Z Count Dracula tops the list of existentially challenged characters.
As a buddy of notorious gay Victorian author Oscar Wilde, the actual Stoker was believed to be a closeted gay man in a repressive England, so his novel was rife with suggestive sexuality and gender reversals. Director/co-writers Gordon Greenberg and Steve Rosen’s send-up of this novel is meant to be viewed through a very contemporary lens.
Just as the book transcended other Gothic horror of its day, this comedy rises above being simple holiday fare. Make your way to the Westside’s New World Stages for a comedic jab at the jugular.

REVIEW: Horror comedies come in only two flavors - good and bad. DRACULA, A COMEDY OF TERRORS is a sensational, decadent satire that is the perfect treat for the Halloween season.
Gordon Greenberg and Steve Rosen's satirical and irreverent treatment of the Stoker novel resides somewhere in between “The Rocky Horror Musical” and a Monty Python film, with flares of the immortal Charles Ludlam. The tone is set right from the start as the cast tosses the novel and the hilarity begins. The previous productions of the play, including an adaptation of the piece as a radio play for The Broadway Podcast Network, clearly have sharpened the dialogue and wordplay to a razor sharp wordplay duel that had the audience laughing out loud within the first few moments. The writers have trimmed the novel down to a 90 minute tale that tries to incorporate key elements of the story, taking liberties with the novel’s climax to nicely dovetail with the themes of their play. The satire runs the spectrum from that of the novel, political, contemporary pop culture, and gender. Except for Dracula, the other actors have dual or multiple roles where the juggling of the characters adds to the merriment.

Gordon Greenberg’s direction is superb. It is a finely tuned choreography of dialogue and movement that harkens back to the golden era of silent films to the Marx Brothers. There are some delightful props, including puppets, that add yet another level of humor to the production. Greenberg turns up the energy right at the start and maintains it for 90 minutes, giving the audience little time to recover from the side splitting laughter.

Tijana Bjelajac’s Scenic Design is a wonderful minimalist and still adds atmosphere to the production. Integrated into the set are nice visual and functional elements that are scaled down for an off-broadway production but are lavish enough, and easily would work for a Broadway staging. Tristan Raines’ costume designs are fabulous. The designs capture the period but also combine contemporary elements that highlight the performances.

DRACULA, A COMEDY OF TERRORS features an award worthy ensemble cast. The delivery of lines, the body language and facial expressions, their interactions are flawless, and if there were any misfires I didn’t notice. There was a fluidity to their performances that at times it felt like choreography. James Daly is outstanding as Dracula. He is as dynamic and enchanting as Tim Curry’s Dr. Frank-n-Furter, combined with the physique of Rocky. He delivers this multifaceted performance rich with comedic timing. Actor Arnie Burton steals the show as both Mina and Jean Van Helsing. He creates two unique performances that embodies the comedic prowess that is reminiscent of Milton Berle to Harvey Fierstein, with a dash of Bugs Bunny. In contrast, actress Ellen Harvey brings to life Wallace Westfeldt and Percy Renfield. She brilliantly effects switching between the two extremes that eventually becomes an uproarious gag in play. The cast does an astounding job of maintaining the energy level of the play for 90 minutes.

DRACULA, A COMEDY OF TERRORS is a side-splitting tour de force that would leave Bram Stoker and Mel Brooks rolling in the aisles, and maybe a bit envious. I’ve always advocated that there is a distinct bond between comedy and horror, and this is at its finest. Outstanding performances, fabulous production designs, brilliant directing, all deliver an energetic feel good and memorable theater experience. You must bring your friends for a night you’ll long remember as the perfect treat of this Halloween season.

She sat beside Will, and her eyes never left Pantalaimon, who stood trembling at the shore end of the jetty; but as the boatman let go of the iron ring and swung his oars out to pull the boat away, the little dog dæmon trotted helplessly out to the very end, his claws clicking softly on the soft planks, and stood watching, just watching, as the boat drew away and the jetty faded and vanished in the mist. Then Lyra gave a cry so passionate that even in that muffled, mist-hung world it raised an echo, but of course it wasn’t an echo, it was the other part of her crying in turn from the land of the living as Lyra moved away into the land of the dead. “My heart, Will …” she groaned, and clung to him, her wet face contorted with pain. And thus the prophecy that the Master of Jordan College had made to the Librarian, that Lyra would make a great betrayal and it would hurt her terribly, was fulfilled. The Amber Spyglass, Chapter 21: The Harpies

can we talk about how genius the hdm soundtrack is lorne balfe literally died for our sins
the mixture of different melodies in "to touch another" is fucking insane. there's something completely new to represent the settling of their dæmons, a slow and soft reprise of "scholastic sanctuary" which represents safety, childhood and comfort for lyra and pan, and notes from the haunting piece in the scene with the boatman, symbolising coming of age and bringing their separation full circle
the main notes of "lyra: the child of prophecy" are placed at the end of "the serpent's story" and that's on galaxy brain
every lyra and will theme is a variation of "love across worlds"
the music in the end credits of both 1.08 and 3.04 is changed to "look to the stars" as both episodes end with lyra's betrayal
"into the abyss" is a combination of mrs coulter's theme, "asriel's republic" and "goodbye explorer" as well as "crossing worlds" from the scene in which asriel and marisa first departed from each other in season one
"crossing worlds" and "goodbye explorer" are variations of the same melody. both are centered on asriel's journey and what he is fighting for. that journey starts when he creates the bridge to the stars, and ends when he falls into the abyss
"lyra: the child of prophecy", "lyra's jordan" and "separation" are all individual pieces linked together by the same 4 notes. each explore lyra's relationship with herself and the betrayal she is prophecised to make
the music used when lyra uses the alethiometer for the first time contains the melody from the title sequence
both "parting ways" begin with the same melody, but the first track continues with the main theme plus "scholastic sanctuary" to represent the beginning of a great adventure and safety, while the second uses a mournful reprise of "love across worlds" to show lyra and will's realisation that they can't stay together and that the adventure is over
"gracious wings" begins with a dangerous edge but this transforms into a piece that feels like magic and destiny as lyra instructs the ghosts to tell them stories (reflecting the whole journey through the land of the dead), and contains the theme from "lyra: the child of prophecy" literal cinema
will's theme "assuming the mantle" is brought back in the scenes with his father
"play the serpent" is used to represent mary's creativity as she discovers her purpose and it also appears when she and lyra are reunited

Okay here is the final list of all the books I’ve finished this year! (since it doesn’t look like I’m going to get anything finished or even started this week.)
I tend to not finish things if I’m not enjoying them (two exceptions on this list because sometimes I am spiteful), so I liked all of these—but the ones in bold are those I particularly loved (I only bolded one per series or it would just be a wall of The Murderbot Diaries lol).
LGBT+ books read: 48
wlw books read: 22
trans/nb books: 17
I’m very happy with my year in reading. I hit my new year’s goal of 52 books finished. And I read a lot of things that I really fucking loved. Lots of robots. LOTS of scifi/fantasy sapphics which I am SO happy about. Some good horror, some good fucky “romances”. A lot of things written in response to the Trump era or written during 2020 lockdown.
I also enjoyed partaking in online book fandom for the first time in possibly ever! Especially Murderbot fandom, which is very active and creative and lovely.
(If you followed me for my bookblogging, thank you for enduring my Thai BL vroom vroom omegaverse brainrot. It will not be stopping anytime soon.)
For 2024, I am going to keep my goal at 52 books and save any extra time I have for rereading old things.

Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors
Tumblr media
DRACULA: A COMEDY OF TERRORS by Gordon Greenberg and Steve Rosen directed by Greenberg: I love a good transgression, and this farcical take on the classic vampire story delivers with cross-gender casting, quick changes and a staunchly bisexual Count. Five actors play at least 12 roles with transformations that reminded me of my own three-actor THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, though they’re most likely inspired by Charles Ludlam’s THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP. One switch was so quick and effective it even stopped the show. A lot of the humor is hit or miss. There are very funny references to vampire lore, but the deliberate anachronisms (the driver taking Jonathan Harker to Transylvania asks for a five-star review, for example) get tired after a while. Ultimately, the piece depends on the cast, and the good outweighs the bad. The most successful farceurs are Andrew Keenan Bolger as Jonathan Harker, Ellen Harvey (who looks like a prettier Edna May Oliver) as Dr. Westfeldt and Renfield and Arnie Burton as Mina and a female Van Helsing. Jordan Boatman’s Lucy is so classily British she’d make Lady Mary look like Eliza Doolittle, but her other character suffer from weak diction. And James Daly as Count Dracula is gorgeous and does great physical work, but it’s often hard to tell the logic behind his frequent dropping of the dialect. There are a few times it gets laugh, but at other times, it's just seems like a mistake. Overall, the show is a lot of fun, and seeing a woman playing a man in a love scene with a man playing a woman certainly tickled my queer fancy.

There's a way to swap back to the original Cuphead title screen and song
New Post has been published on https://excellentreview.online/theres-a-way-to-swap-back-to-the-original-cuphead-title-screen-and-song/
There's a way to swap back to the original Cuphead title screen and song
After updating the game, look for “Original” and “DLC” title screen options under Visuals
“Well Cuphead and his pal Mugman, they like to roll the dice…”
If you’re feeling nostalgic for the original Cuphead title screen, there’s now a way to go back — a recent patch added a sneaky toggle, allowing Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course players to swap between the newer Ms. Chalice opener and the duo’s classic tune.
To change the title screen music, go to the Options menu in Cuphead and look for a newly-added title screen setting in the Visuals section.
The original Cuphead title screen and song
youtube
The new title screen for The Delicious Last Course
youtube
Both songs are great in their own way, but I have a soft spot for the original quartet vibe.
Patch 1.3.4 also cleans up minor issues
After seeing a notification, I was curious what was patched — that’s the main inclusion.
That said, Studio MDHR also cleaned up some outstanding issues:
Fixed rare issue with Boatman dialogue being triggered after fast traveling.
Added ability to undo wishes.
Fixed localization issues.
Fixed minor animation issues.
Fixed minor audio issues.
Every so often, I see people post about glitches on Reddit, so they’re out there. Aside from one or two animation hiccups (that never showed up again), I’ve been lucky so far.
Cuphead is one of those games I wish I could zap from my (admittedly feeble) memory so that I could go through it again, all fresh and ready for punishment.

45 Black Men in Horror - Part 1
45 Black Men in Horror - Part 1 this is the first 15 names. Stay posted for Part 2 and Part 3 later this month.
As you probably know, 60 black women and horror and 100 black women in horror started out as a series on this very blog back in 2013. It just kept getting bigger and bigger until it eventually became the book 60 Black Women in Horror. Then, 80 Black Women in Horror. And finally, 100+ Black Women in Horror. Linda D Addison has been saying since like 2018 that someone needs to do a list of black…

Black Horror Writers
Feeling a sudden desire, for whatever reason, to add some diversity to your bookshelf? Want to put a few bucks in the pockets of authors of color? Here’s a sampler platter to get you started.
Tananarive Due A film historian and a hot name in horror fiction, Due is an outspoken academic and prolific author. Start with The Good House, a 2003 Gothic, if you're a fan of haunted house stories.
Wrath James White A former athlete, White is a hugely prolific author of hardcore horror. You can start with The Resurrectionist, but honestly, with more than 35 books to choose from, you've got plenty of options.
Victor LaValle LaValle has only written four novels so far, but they're well-regarded and rich narratives. The Changeling is the usual recommendation for a starting place.
Brandon Massey Southern Gothic themes woven through horror, suspense and urban themes - that's Massey's brand in a nutshell. He's plenty prolific, so you've got a bunch to choose from. Maybe start with this year's new release, The Quiet Ones.
Chesya Burke A prolific short story writer, Burke writes speculative fiction and comic books. If you'd like a collection of stories all in one place, try out Let's Play White. If you'd rather do a novel, read The Strange Crimes of Little Africa.
Jemiah Jefferson Do you like pulpy erotic vampire horror? You don't have to answer that. Just buy Jefferson's books if you do. There's a series, so you'll want to start at the beginning with Voice of the Blood.
Michael Boatman An actor and screenwriter, Boatman is also a novelist. He writes splatterpunk that Joe Lansdale has praised, which is as fine an accolade as they come. The Revenant Road was his first novel. He also shows up in a ton of anthologies, so keep an eye out.
Helen Oyeyemi Oyeyemi is a rising star, Shirley Jackson Award finalist, scholar, a world traveler, among other things. Her most recent book, Gingerbread, came out in 2019. I think it would not be out of line to compare her to Angela Carter.
Maurice Carlos Ruffin A debut novelist, Ruffin's work launched with a bang in February. His book We Cast a Shadow was long-listed for a stack of prizes, and as a scathing cultural sci-fi horror, it fits right in with the work of folks like Jordan Peele.
Nnedi Okorafor A Nigerian-American writer, Okorafor writes for both children and adults, and her stories have earned a whole stack of awards. She is, for the record, also disabled. She's got a whole stack of YA and adult books to choose from, as well as comic books. Binti and its sequel are as good a place as any to start, though.
Jewelle Gomez Philanthropist, playwright, poet, author -- Gomez dabbles in a lot of things, and she's an outspoken voice for LGBTQ women of color. Check out The Gilda Stories if you've always wanted to read about a black lesbian vampire (and, let's be honest, who hasn't?)
PS: When you order, don’t waste your money on Amazon. Instead, use a service like https://bookshop.org/ that distributes your hard-earned cash to independent booksellers. Keep money in your community.
PPS: I love Toni Morrison and Octavia Butler and also left them off the list because they’re well-known already and because I think it’s really important right now to support living artists, but you should check out their work too.
