Twins Outslug Yankees 10-7!
Yankees 7 Twins 10 W-Ober (1-0) L-Cortes (0-1) SV-Bowman (1)
The Minnesota Twins haven't hit much so far in Spring Training. The bats woke up today against the Yankees in Fort Myers. The Yankees were ready from the start as Anthony Volpe led-off with a base hit back to Bailey Ober. Austin Wells smacked a Bailey Ober cutter out to right for a two-run homer to start the scoring. The Twins answered in the bottom of the first as Byron Buxton lined a Nestor Cortes pitch out to left-center for a solo homer. This pulled the Twins within a run after an inning of play. The Twins got back to work in the second when they quickly loaded the bases. With two outs, Byron Buxton unloaded them with a triple to center. Carlos Correa followed with a run-scoring single to extend the Twins lead to three. Byron Buxton continued his hot day in the fourth as he galloped around the bases on a triple. Carlos Correa singled him home to add to the Minnesota lead. The Twins would not stop hitting in the fifth as Christian Vazquez and Willi Castro started it with singles. With two outs, Carlos Santana lined a run-scoring single to right and the Twins lead grew to five. The Twins kept tacking on runs with a Maddux Houghton sac fly in the sixth. The Yankees would have some late life as Oswaldo Cabrera drew a walk and Josh VanMeter smoked a Jorge Alcala pitch out to right for a two-run homer. New York wasn't done in the eighth as they loaded the bases. Christopher Familia drew a bases loaded walk and Everson Pereira singled home a pair to pull the Yankees within a run. The Twins would answer with a Mike Helman double and a Maddux Houghton walk. Chris Williams singled them both in and the Twins had a three-run lead heading into the ninth. Matt Bowman got in and out of trouble in the ninth and the Twins picked up the win today at home.
-Final Thoughts- Bailey Ober had a bad first inning then got better. He went three innings and allowed two runs on two hits with three strikeouts. Simeon Woods Richardson threw two shutout innings, Justin Topa fanned two in the sixth, and Jorge Alcala gave up two runs in the seventh. Kody Funderburk gave up three unearned runs in the eighth and Matt Bowman struck out the side in the ninth. Byron Buxton had two triples, a homer and four RBI's on the day. Willi Castro and Christian Vazquez had three hits each. Carlos Correa, Mike Helman, and Chris Williams had two hits each. The Twins hit 6-for-21 with runners in scoring position and left thirteen men on base. Tomorrow, Joan Adon faces Pablo Lopez as the Nationals come to town.

Josh VanMeter was forced to catch for the first time in 12 years. It didn’t go well
Josh VanMeter was forced to catch for the first time in 12 years. It didn’t go well
Josh VanMeterPhoto: AP Ask any Pirates fan and they’ll tell you how bad a second baseman Josh VanMeter is. The 27-year-old is hitting .171 with a .496 OPS in 15 games this season. Well, after today, he’s not only the worst second baseman some Pirates fans have ever seen, but the worst catcher as well. Our story begins like many episodes of modern baseball drama do, with an umpire who let his…

VanMeter Hits Game-winning Homer, D-backs Beat Rockies 5-4
VanMeter Hits Game-winning Homer, D-backs Beat Rockies 5-4
PHOENIX: Josh VanMeter hit a tiebreaking homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to give the Arizona Diamondbacks a 5-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Sunday. It was a rare happy moment in a downright brutal season for the Diamondbacks, who finished with a 52-110 record, which was tied with the Baltimore Orioles for the worst in the majors. The Rockies finished 74-87. The…
