"I really keep meaning to play ghost trick but I don't really wanna pay sixty bucks for it and looking at the ds version I really love how it looks on there. hey I know, let's just nab a used copy of ebay for the best of both worlds!"
the lowest price for an English copy with no box or anything else, starts at 80USD and only goes up from there.
so there goes that idea i suppose :')

I missed my regularly-scheduled Freebie Friday, so it's time for a Saturday Catch-Up! This week's free Patreon post talks about all the media I've been checking out this week, including the third season of Amphibia, John Carpenter's Halloween, and one of the best mobile games I've ever played. I've also got an updated on my 2024 pledge drive!
Read it here: Saturday Catch-Up: Halloween in January

About three weeks late I now have Doyoky Gamecube joycons and can compare them directly against the NYXI Wizard! I've also disassembled them to attempt to modify them and failed, and can complain about its internals.
Doyoky Retro uses rubber membrane connections on ALL game buttons except for the paddles and context buttons; +, -, Home, Capture, macro/paddle assign, and L4/R4 paddles are the only buttons that use micro-switches. Improvement over NYXI Wizard which uses micro-switches on the d-pad and shoulder buttons.
Macro and Paddle Assign buttons are the only buttons on the entire controller that rattle when shaken.
Doyoky Retro has that kind of cheap-feeling lightness to it that third-party controllers usually do. It doesn't have the weight of traditional rumble motors, so it doesn't feel as premium as NYXI Wizard does.
All the face buttons and sticks feel almost spot-on compared to a Gamecube OEM! Insane upgrade from NYXI Wizard which feels more like a third-party controller.
The joycon rail piece attached to it out of the box is also a USB-C charging station for joycons and works with pretty much anything that can be put on a joycon rail!
Like the NYXI Wizard, the stick caps are again completely custom. This time, sadly, they're pretty purpose-built for the Doyoky Retro, and OEM Gamecube stick caps (as well as the Gamecube-themed Retroflag drop-in controller) do not fit the Doyoky Retro without severe modification. I'm still working on some way of mounting an OEM's C-stick nub to one of the replacement caps.
The Doyoky Retro has replacement caps! The stick caps' actual thumbsticks are mounted on a hexagonal friction-fit bracket and can be removed. You get a gray C-stick style nub, replacements for both to feel more like a Dualshock 4 or Dualsense controllers' sticks, or a ringed rubber C-stick like the analog.
The interior of the Doyoky Retro is pretty convoluted and stupid on a couple of its controls. A plunger on a spring is mounted to the PCB in a well to hit the micro-switch that controls the paddles, and the plunger itself hits a long post attached to the paddle button. This also makes it a total bitch to close the controller back up without anything falling out.
The joycon rail is custom, and none of its functions are actually on the rail itself, they're on micro-switches on the PCB. This includes the SL and SR buttons. The only piece of electronics on the rail itself is the charge/hard connection rail to a Switch or other charger, and the Bluetooth antenna.
The battery is a small (~1 inch long and wide?) pouch battery that is only held in place by the friction of a foam cushion glued to it, and resting on the interior of the controller and occupying some of the space in the handles. Like the paddle mechanisms, this also has a bad tendency to just flop around and fall out; they should have used double-sided tape to secure it inside the well it occupies on the plastic mold.
Doyoky Retro uses a little button motor for vibration instead of fuller sized motors as in a typical controller. Downgrade from NYXI Wizard.
The controller only tries to connect to Switch when pressing Home on the right joycon and Capture on the left. This is really annoying when every other controller on the market, even other third-parties, will try to connect on any button press!
In summation these are worth the money if you want a Gamecube controller, especially one with accurate buttons and sticks. I think, though, that the perfect Gamecube joycon lies somewhere between here and the NYXI Wizard. Either the Doyoky one needs to be heavier and needs more OEM-accurate sticks (the C-stick nub likely doesn't have a C embossed because they're using the same mold for the optional left-stick nub), or the NYXI Wizard needs to drop the button backlight in favor of OEM-style buttons and adopt the rubber membrane button improvements. The Wizard has better paddles, weight and rumble, the Retro has better buttons, bundle-ins, and d-pad. I can't really recommend one over the other, since in direct comparison both have their caveats that make the other more desirable. Maybe a third company will try their hand at a Gamecube joycon, or one of the two will make improvements?
Additionally, Doyoky made me wait an extra three weeks on my order because they ran into quality-control problems that required an entire batch be taken back to the factory. The order almost made it to fulfillment, and was hurriedly taken back; it required asking customer-support what was going on to actually get any reason on why my order stopped moving, and even then they weren't entirely sure why themselves until some days after I first sent an email. The whole while, it was still listed as an in-stock product. Not a good move.

I decided to buy new joycons cuz the drift in the old ones was making games unplayable, and they have pastel coloured ones now! I picked up some cute stick caps to go with. (They came as a set of 4 with two froggies and 2 axolotl)

Beat minish cap on the virtual GBA on the switch, it was extremely good the controls were nice and tight and just as fun as i remembered it as a kid. (i did not 100% it because i refuse to do the minigames and also fuck the figurines lmao). My wife played through it too for the first time and she loved it and she beat Vaati as well which was hella impressive although she did have to cheese the save states from the virtual console.
Beat Ocarina of Time on the virtual N64 on the switch, I had a lot of fun with it it is still probably the most iconic zelda game ever. The controls on the virtual console on the switch are total ass however and ruin much of the game. Right joystick is mapped to the C buttons for no good reason even though the dpad would have made perfect sense. So playing songs on the ocarina is super tedious because you have to very carefully move the right stick to the note you want to play instead of just mashing buttons like on the original n64 game. Also idk if this was just my pro controller but right joystick for the c buttons seemed to favor the down c button which was so annoying so basically always had to map arrow/slingshot/boomerang to down because if i tried to use them as left or right it’d end up cancelling out to do whatever was on down. Also aiming sucks ass. Vertical is inverted with no option to change it and since you can’t change the camera in OoT it’s a slog to shoot anything tbh. You can’t remap any buttons which is wild to me also you can’t change the button configuration on a pro controller in the switch settings either so unless you rawdog it and play with joycons there’s no way to remap the buttons yourself.
Also I remember cheesing the hell out of the dark link fight with megaton hammer but this version must have been one where they patched that out because hammer did not help at all and it was way more difficult of a fight than i ever remembered.
Wife is playing through Ocarina of Time right now, she started on the switch VC but hated the controls so much I went and dug out 3DS games and found my copy of OoT for that so she’s living her best life playing that right now. Wildly she never played OoT before so getting to experience her first impressions is really fun. Plus I get to be the irl gossip stone giving hints when she gets stuck :)
Beat Majora’s Mask on the virtual N64 on the switch. Same control issues because same platform but had a much better go of it since I got used to the shit controls by playing through OoT right before it. Love the hustle and bustle of MM and lived my best life playing through it all again. Did find out during this playthrough that the VC does have a feature to let you use the buttons as c buttons if you hold zr down while pressing them. That made the songs a lot easier (esp if no a button needed then it felt like og n64 controls but if a song has an a button in it then you have to remember to let go of zr press a and then press zr again). Goht is still the goat boss fight *chef’s kiss*
Playing through Skyward Sword on the switch right now. Bought a physical copy so my wife can play it once she beats OoT. Slowly getting her obsessed with all the Zelda lore which is fun.

Random mini things that not necessarily belong to dolls, but you can't stop me 1. Bird feeder. Found at a flea market. It's the perfect size for dolls... And now I realize it really doesn't show on the picture...
Tumblr media
2. Keychain cap of a team I don't recognize. Bought on a whim, only later realized it fits RH almost perfectly. I wanna reverse engineer it to make more.
Tumblr media
3. Keychain switchs. I also have seen game controllers, but they're too big. I might cut the joycons of one... And maybe put something on the screen.
Tumblr media
4. Cheapo rings. They were 2x1. They're hella uncomfortable, so the dolls will use it as bracelets and necklaces.
Tumblr media
The next ones were bought at Prichos, so if you're from Mexico and have a Walmart or Bodega Aurrera, you can still get them! 5. Shovels. They're supposed to be spoons, but I have no idea which dessert would go with them. Also no idea what I’m going to do with them, but they looked fun
Tumblr media
6. Microwave. They had it available in red, orange, pink and blue... But the chicken inside was also available in those colors... So yeah. It's technically a wind-up toy, the chicken inside rotates on it's own.
Tumblr media
7. "Soft cream" machine. A bit oversized, but the giant heads of the RH kind of compensate for that. I was surprised when I realized it had 2 cones and two ice cream swirls. They were available in this blue and a pale pink
Tumblr media
8. "Juice" machine. Also a bit oversized. Includes one glass and two cilindres of "juice". You can see one of the cilindres at the side of the machine and another inside the glass
Tumblr media
They're both fun and work similar, you store the juice/ice cream on the top, and when you push the "push" button, it is "served". The juice is much easier to land correctly. There was also a toaster, but it was the same size as the microwave, so it looks giant. The last two pictures are from "mercaditos".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
9. A water bottle with dispenser and 10. A blender They have candy(?) Inside that i think I'm gonna throw away because I'm not entirely sure they're edible. They're a good scale for the dolls, and I particularly like how good the bottle looks. Also I like the brand of the blender haha.
I’m tempted to buy the other color of the ice cream and juice machines in case I ever make a movie theater or restaurant or something like that. Might buy the toaster just for the heck of it.
I also saw some stuff with cats the other day, but when I went today there was nothing of that, I’m gonna try the other store in the city

Ok but reader and ghouls playing video games together. And having a cuddle pile after
-🦑
OKAY BUT HONESTLY THOUGH.
Aether and Swiss beating the shit out of each other during Mario Kart. Mountain wants to play the Legend of Zelda. Sodo is on the floor eating joycon caps (Terzo bought like a million decorated caps for the ghouls as a gift) and while everyone is distracted the ghoulettes take over the TV to play minecraft with you.
Finally after a while everyone settles (mostly because the ghoulettes will bite anyone who tries to take the TV back) into a giant ghoul pile and falls asleep that way.
When you fall asleep, Mountain takes your remote and plays minecraft with the ghoulettes instead.

What Zelda game have you never played but want to play?
I've always wanted to play the Four Swords games, but I've never had any friends who are interested in my interests enough to play it with me, so unfortunately I've had to stick with the manga for now (which according to walkthroughs, FSA is basically a completely different game and FS is also very different to FSA).
I've also really wanted to play Skyward Sword with motion controls but I don't have enough space to bring out my Wii slab nor do I have removable joycons on my switch - yes, I'm fucking lame and have a switch lite and it's pink so at least it's in my favourite colour. Thankfully I can just buy it and use button controls but it's never gonna be the same tbh
I also really wanna play the Oracle series, they look so fun! I can't wait for the GBA emulator updates to come on the switch for both Minish Cap and the Oracle games. The only reason I haven't played them before is because the way the game is coloured is too harsh for my eyes so I'm hoping there'll be an overlay put in place that helps with that.

have to take a break from skyward sword for an indeterminate amount of time bc my hypermobile shoulder/collarbone has had enough w/motion controls
so maybe i’ll find a gba emulator and start minish cap now?? if it’s only like 6 buttons maybe i could do it one handed????
botw is doable since i don’t need to move the left joycon. i’m getting kinda bored of botw after beating it once & now just doing side quests, but the side quests aren’t enough. i crave Plot. i crave Lore
suggestions welcome! hype about gba zelda games welcome!

hi babydog! i’m planning to get what amounts to a game boy colour from funnyplaying and mod it! i have a few questions though considering that you’ve modded your switch before. firstly did you watch any youtubers who modded stuff for inspiration? secondly where did you get the cool key chain/cord you have attached to yours (not sure what it’s called 😅)? thirdly, did you get the inspiration from and any ideas for bonding with them? thank you!!
hiii omg congrats :0] !!!!! send gameboy pics when u can plzzz :0P
tbh i went into it completely blind. i actually didnt know my switch was called a "modded switch" until this moment because it isnt jailbroken, technically only the hardware is modified (does that count?)
the inspiration came from my brain when i was a little babey in the 2000s and glitter-clear/clear-shelled things were popular ♡. it also came from taking apart computers with my dad when i was small and visually stimming on their internal hardware lolz ! 99% of my inspiration for everything i do, especially art/visual stuff, pretty much always links to growing up in the 2000s & 10s :0] if you mean, "did you follow a tutorial for changing the shell" yes i totally did, but the tutorials werent my inspo just my guide
when i got my switch she was brand-new and didnt have a set personality yet, so i bonded with her through the modding process and she grew into her shell a lot (no pun intended lol) but she did not choose or inspire what i gave to her, those things were planned loooong before i bought her
iirc, everything(?) for my switch was found on amazon over the course of a year or two. the keychains are an audio jack plug, which are sort of hard to find now, but are usually called "phone charms" or "dust plugs"
here's what my switch has:
modified clear-pink shell
clear-glitter protective case (if you get a clear shell, i really recommend getting a clear case too, this thing eats up the yellowing UV rays so my shell stays pink), extra joycon set has a strawberry hard case
heart shaped button caps
pink-clear-glitter paw joystick grips, strawberry joystick grips
white paw audio dust plug, beaded strawberry dust plug (sibling handmade the latter)
if it counts, the yellow star memory card and a screen protector (ALWAYS GET A SCREEN PROTECTOR!!!)

y;know it would be cool if joycons weren't so shit that in literally less than 2 weeks after you got them back from repair which they charged you 40$ for because of a missing fucking thumbstick cap that DIDNT EVEN MATTER
it starts drifting Again!!!
i got desperate enough to order the special screwdriver off the internet and half-stripped one of the screws to get a piece of cardboards in there because that's SUPPOSED to fix it but NO, its STILL DRIFTING
and now i CANT send them back for repair because theyll probably charge me ANOTHER 40$ because it was so bad i had to try fixing it myself which STILL didn't work and thats Proabbly gonna count as voiding my warranty or some shit :)

NYXI Wizard came in the mail today
Pros:
>Gamecube shape
>good d-pad and excellent sticks
>almost fully-featured, has wireless and wake-up support
>back paddles, bindable to macros and individual buttons
>comes with its own plastic brick to attach to for a Pro Controller like the dog head for joycons
>very easily replaceable stick caps and has optional smooth or octagonal stick wells
Cons:
>clicky shoulder buttons, no analog L/R (this isn’t a reasonable expectation for a Switch controller though)
>A button sits pretty shallow in the shell, not a problem but it’s not quite Gamecube
>the lighting on the A/B/X/Y buttons is dumb (can be turned off)
>the d-pad feels good but the d-pad button itself feels cheap
>Turbo functionality keeps it from being Smash tourney legal, if you care about that
>the more typical stick designs instead of Gamecube style rumbles my jimblies, especially when the Retroflag controller uses stick caps pretty close to OEM Gamecube
Overall I’m very pleased with this but the controller looks too busy because of all the shit they slapped onto it for additional functions, it ends up looking like that MadCatz controller parody from Billy & Mandy. I don’t really have any complaints that aren’t nitpicks and personal preferences. I could’ve done without turbo and I would have put the settings buttons on each joycon in a different spot, but I like that it affects the shape of a Wavebird controller.
8/10 and I’ll probably bump this up to a 9/10 after replacing the stick caps with OEM Gamecube ones, and see if I can’t replace the d-pad rocker with a better one and replace the face buttons with OEMs too.
