Bumbling
In the dead of the night, a small, black nose sniffed delicately, belonging to a miniscule, baby-pink puggle. A miniscule Julie-Su had awoken to the sound of a door opening, her tiny, still-blue eyes blinking as she sniffed inquisitively, her eyes meeting with the icey-blue eyes of her half-sister. Unbeknownst to the cruel circumstances she had inherited by birthright, she giggled, reaching towards her new visitor.
Lien-Da stared at the child in disdain, as if her giggles were poisonous. She loathed this child, and eveything which she represented. She hated how her father had avoided her gaze ever since her mother had passed; he had handed her and her brother off to his lackeys, deeming twins too much work, alongside being the Grandmaster. So why, if he had no time for them, was he having a child with this woman? Moritori Rex had reckoned that her father wasn't much of a Grandmaster in his occasional visits. She wished that Moritori might spend longer at the base; then he could take over as Grandmaster, or better yet, take over as her father. She had much preferred Moritori as her father, anyways… Even though he was busy on such long intel missions, he had always had time for her and Kragok.
So, now, staring down at this miniscule echidna that was supposedly her half-sister, she felt no love in her heart. And then she started chugging a blunt, and it was so dank. just stanky. and it was like, totally choking out the baby and shit. Like damn, girl. What's wrong with you? Anywhomst! She realised that she felt no love in her heart. The tiny echidna gazed up curiously with her big, dark eyes, a tiny smile still causing her nose to wrinkle up in a way which might be seen as cute; Lien-Da had found it to be quite disgruntling. She bared her teeth, showing her fangs. “I don't know why you're so happy.”
Then suddenly, using the time stones, (modern) Vector appeared. He wandered down the corridor rizzfully. He walked right up to Mari-Su. “Sup, Femroid” he winked, giving finger guns to her. “Heard you're a mother now.” he tipped his fedora, his flame-print button-up shirt flowing with his movements. He grinned, which happened to eccentuate his pube-like beard. For some reason, this was working on her; perhaps it was her terrible taste in men, seeming that she was married to Luger.
Vector winked; he was so confident, for somebody who doesn't even know what the 'M' in 'sex' stands for. Mari-Su giggled, finding him interesting. Vector waggled his eyebrows, then noticed behind Mari-Su, a portal. Silver stepped through, alerted to an anomaly which may cause catestrophic circumstances for the future; Vector hitting. By the rules of the universe, Vector cannot be allowed to hit. It had been deemed a topic of unimportance, given how rizzless he truly was; but nobody, NOBODY could have accounted for just how terrible Mari-Su's tastes could be.
Unhindered, Vector slicked his scales back, grinning at Mari-Su. “Hey, baby, you got blow?” He winked. As he flirted, Kragok, step-son of Mari-Su, showed up, looking not unline Whitney Chewston. He squinted, opening his mouth. “Pack it up, Skittles Squad” he growled, in true Chewston fashion. As they all stood there, they hoped that Mario might appear. Luckily, Thevius added a SM64 Generations mod to Sonic Generations, allowing Mario to appear. He flew in, zooming in.
-Mandatory Thevius Pipe SFX-
Lien-Da pondered for a moment how Luger had left us all alone, just how Kyle had left N'Oni, Puppy, Ry, and Jenzel alone in the Voice Chat. She wondered why she knew these names for a moment, but it semeed that they may be discussing her unfortunate happenstances. Wait, no, this isn't about baby Julie-Su!
Back in the corridor, mommy Mari-Su was getting increasingly enamoured by Vector; if only some strapping young lad who may call her 'mommy' may step in. Unlike how Thevius could not get past this roadblock in SM64 Generations, Ry's dreams came true; he teleported into the scene. Mari-Su's attention immediately pivoted. Vector gasped, knowing that he could not beat this beautiful worm man. Mari-Su gasped in delight. “My, what beautiful eyes you have” She gasped, as Vector realised how truly Rizzless he was. He was distraught; truly, he was unable to hit it. He knew this from the days he had spent on his favourite chatroom, (insert after asking Ian what Mobian 4Chan is called) - he saw this coming. Always some chad with no limbs; no room for femroids to love crocodiles. And he was jealous of Zori, for reasons unknown. He felt like Mario flying in horrendous spinning circles, unable to land.
He felt as if he were Mario being asked to pick up rings; “It just ain't correct.” Mario was right there in the corridor, chugging the fattest ol' joint your eyes have ever seen. It was sort of flooding out the room with smoke. Ry blinked one eye, then the other. Mari-Su nodded. “I agree, Ry. Mario is an incredible man. But not more incredible than you” She nodded; Luger had left her unattended, just like how Kazzie and Jenzel went to bed at a reasonable time, leaving the BumbleBoys unattended. Eggtaint. She needed a new adventure; a backwards-cap based adventure. Ry blinked in a way, which seemed to say, “I'm happy to help, just like how I helped Puppy to write this, and how I help to make N'Oni sigh. It's what I dream of.” Mari-Su, of course, could infer all of this; she had somehow connected the Echidna Soul Touch, despite Ry not being an echidna.
In the end, Mario chuffed a fat dart, chugged, even, Lien-Da got addicted to blow, Kragok kept up being Whitney Chewston-Esque, just like Moss from Pikmin 4. Ry and Mari-Su eloped. Puppy got ready to go to sleep. All was beautiful. Eggtaint. Wait, who's watching the baby?

EVERYBODY LOVES SHADOW!!!
THE COMPLETE COMIC!
i said i was gonna put them all into one post once it was finished!
the idea came from this bumblekast episode!
i followed it as closely as i could while adding my own stuff (cus i make comics for a living--i can't NOT make it into a cohesive story!) and keeping the original ending bcus it was funny to me.
answering a few questions i got while this was being posted. >>
"how was metal sonic and the egg pawns affected?"
it was a spray/gas that could affect anything sentient by seeping into skin/metal/whatever. as long as it's something that was designed to be affected (so not grass, trees, water... unless it's a sentient person made of those things. like a tree or water monster for example).
an AI like nicole for instance would be affected physical or in a computer.
(i dont personally believe the egg pawns are as mindless as a pawn could be. they've shown sentience is being perceptive to attacks and threats. THAT'S JUST A HEADCANON THO. i incorporated it anyway cus i thought it was funny even if it probably doesn't make sense to anyone else).
it being scentless is an eggman specific design. if you could smell an unfamiliar scent on yourself (given you can smell at all), you'd wonder what it was.
shadow initially thought the spray was some diversion tactic to keep him from getting too close to eggman. since it was just one of his bases and he wasn't found there, shadow had left in search of where eggman could really be when he runs into amy and there the story starts.
"did sonic ever tell shadow about what was really going on?"
probably not as shadow yeeted himself into space before sonic could get the chance. i'm sure he found him eventually and told him the truth. shadow is gonna avoid that blue payaso for a while after that.
"i don't get the ending :("
watch the podcast! there are timestamps in the top comment, but i'll explain anyway. shadow felt the whole world had gone whack, so his only safe haven was going back into stasis deep in space. he looks so happy :)

There’s been some discussions on Twitter recently about if Blaze’s dimension is worth keeping around and expanding on or if it should be ignored/merged with Sonic’s world thanks to a Bumblekast clip. What are your thoughts on Blaze’s dimension as a story-telling hurdle/ alternate setting? I personally feel like it wouldn’t make a difference if Blaze was a princess from another dimension or a princess from the other side of the world, it would just be easier for her to show up if she wasn’t from another dimension, but I also think it’s be neat to expand on Blaze’s world as a parallel to Sonic’s.
I think there's a whole cottage industry of Sonic fans who just like to take things Ian says out of context so they can rile people up on Twitter, and the fandom falls for it every time, and it's extremely tiring
But also I think Ian is right
This isn't something I've really shared, but I actually have a document where I've kept ideas for what I would do with a hypothetical modern reboot of Archie Sonic where I'm allowed to start from scratch and change anything I want. (I might share some of this someday, perhaps with some character designs, but for now it's just a thing for me. It's not like I'm gonna do a comic or anything.) For Blaze, I immediately decided that all of the elements from the Sol Dimension should be merged with the regular Mobius. I would just say that Sonic and friends have all their adventures on one hemisphere of the planet, and Blaze is from the other. I mean, the Sol Dimension already has a heavy Australia/Oceania vibe. It'd be really easy. This way, there would still be some level of separation, and Blaze would still have her own territory where she gets to be the main hero, but it'd be WAY easier to actually use those elements. Characters can just show up on whatever part of the planet they need to be on for any given story
For some reason people seem to think that Blaze being from a separate dimension isn't a storytelling hurdle at all, and I really don't know what franchise they're following, because it sure as hell isn't the version of Sonic I know. Yes, in theory it could be as simple as just using a warp ring to hop over to the Sol Dimension whenever. There are ways to write around it. I'd love to see that happen so that we could flesh out Blaze's world some more. Give Blaze some more allies and villains of her own! Give her more to do over there, and more reasons for Sonic and co. to visit! But clearly Sega isn't down with that, considering the Sol Dimension has only ever been in one game and, what, two issues of the IDW comics for maybe ten pages total? Sega's just sitting on it, and it's impossible not to see the fact that it's a whole separate dimension as the reason.
Even if we were getting more stories about traveling to and from the Sol Dimension, it'd still be a hassle. You want to use the Chaotix in a story in the Sol Dimension? Wanna use Marine or Johnny or whoever in a story set on the main world? Well, you'd better think up an airtight excuse for why those characters are traveling between the dimensions and pray that Sega approves of it. And right now that seems to be one hell of an obstacle, given how little we see of the Sol Dimension even though I know damn well Ian and Evan would love to explore it more. It's gotten to the point that Blaze is now on an endless "vacation" on Sonic's Earth so that they can actually use her in stories. People have been acting like merging the worlds would completely take away everything that makes Blaze special as a character, when it would just make all of her personal story stuff infinitely easier to work with than it is right now.
"Oh but what about the Sol Emeralds?" There's no reason the Sol Emeralds couldn't exist on the same planet as the Chaos Emeralds. We've already got other magic rocks like the Time Stones, the Phantom Ruby, and the Warp Topaz. "But what about Eggman Nega?" I could not give less of a shit about what happens to Eggman Nega and Sega doesn't even use him anymore, but also he's already supposed to be from Silver's future, not the Sol Dimension. "But what about the plot of Sonic Rush where the whole point was that they had to stop the worlds from being merged because they thought it was a bad thing?" Yes, because Sonic has always been a series that treated canon as sacred an immutable, and Sega would never do something that contradicted a game from almost 20 years ago
Anyway, all of this is a moot point. It's not like this is going to happen. Ian just brought up the possibility on the BumbleKast as an "if I could change literally anything" type deal. Sega is not going to do this. He is allowed to have his own opinions on Sonic things without fans having to take it personally and scream and cry about it. You don't have to agree with him on everything. I've certainly had points I disagree with him on! It's fine! That's normal! He's only human. Yes, Ian is on the Lore Team, but he's just one voice in the room. He's not even the boss of that team. If Ian could get whatever he wanted, we'd have seen the Freedom Fighters and Sticks by now

Maybe it’s an odd time to bring it up, but it is Valentine’s Day. Sonamy and Sonally have been one of the biggest ship wars in the franchise. Thankfully, it doesn’t seem to be as much of a thing as it used to be, but there is still occasional bashing or something. After some deep thought, I think I came up with an answer to make both sides happy.
It has nothing to do with Amy or Sally. It depends on the VERSION of Sonic.
When you think about it, Archie/SatAM Sonic and Mainline Sonic are actually pretty different. With SatAM and Archie, Sonic was born in a monarchy and had a steady home, even when fighting in a war. He’s used to being in one place. He also fought Robonik/Eggman because he had to, freeing the planet and restoring the kingdom. As for the games and IDW, Sonic travels the world and fights Eggman because he wants to, not because he has to. It may not seem like much, but they are key factors. These different lifestyles show more of who would be a better partner for him. Sally has responsibilities as a princess and leader. Even if Eggman is defeated for good, she will still be bound to these duties. Amy, on the other hand, is more adventurous and loves trying new things. She may settle down at times, but she still loves to travel. Both girls are compassionate and ready to help others and can even take the lead when they have to, but go about it in different ways. Sonally is a case of opposites attract and Sonamy is more kindred spirits.
While Sonic and Sally clash at times over how to plan, they work together to pull them off. They are more at ease when they don’t have to be on missions, and more overt about dating. They are also childhood friends in these continuities, knowing each other longer than their other friends. This led to their feelings becoming stronger over time. Sally has grown more into being on the battlefield, but usually works more behind the scenes or deals with the more technical or planning while Sonic takes most of the action.
Sonic and Amy both love adventure and sometimes act before they think. They also go out of their way to help others without a second thought. Amy may be a big romantic, but her relationship with Sonic nowadays is more on the subtle side and no less important and sweet. She used to chase after Sonic, but wasn’t so blinded to put her own desires ahead of others. Amy is also one of the first people Sonic met in his fights against Eggman. Amy also trained herself to be stronger to stand by Sonic’s side so she could protect him like how he protects her.
I do want to talk about the X Years Later/Light Mobius arcs in Archie. In that timeline, Sonic and Sally are married and rule as king and queen. While at times he’s not always happy with being king, he loves Sally enough to accept it. He was even willing to be her royal consort until they could be wed in Archie issue #124 (which is probably the most out of character moment compared to his game counterpart ever). And while we never see Amy in those arcs, Ian Flynn has said a few times on the Bumblekast he thinks Amy would be traveling around with the Time Stones. I thought that was a cool idea, and that feels more like the kind of life the mainline Sonic would want to have.
I kind of feel obliged to bring up Elise. Most people may not like it, and I prefer them as friends, but she was also written as a love interest. Anyway, in one scene Elise asks Sonic if he’ll leave after Dr. Eggman and his plans for Soleanna are stopped, which the hedgehog confirms. Despite what feelings he may have for Elise, he’s not going to give up his lifestyle just to be with her. And I do not mean to make it sound mean, it’s just who he is. A free spirit, free as the wind. And in Sonic and the Black Knight, he is revealed to be the true King Arthur, but he doesn’t accept it. He’s uncomfortable with how the other knights bow to him. I find it hard to believe this Sonic would want that kind of life for anyone, even if Sally was part of the main continuity. She wouldn't give up her duties for him either. A steady relationship or royal lifestyle just isn’t for Sonic’s game counterpart. In issue #2 of IDW, Amy knows Sonic can't be held down and respects his decisions. She loves Sonic for who he is and doesn’t want to change him. Instead, she’s fine with just going on adventures with him. Living in the moment. It’s not the life she initially wanted with him, but it’s enough for now. It does feel like they have become closer after Forces. The game was far from the best, but the premise of spending six month apart is a good way to build something up for them.
The reboot in Archie kind of proves this point about the relationships as well, albeit unintentionally. While the main reason is the new mandates were that game characters could not date, Sonic and Amy felt a lot closer than before. Sonic and Sally were also confirmed to only have a platonic relationship in the new timeline. This is due to Sonic’s past now being closer to his game counterpart rather than SatAM. He’s still part of the Freedom Fighters, but still has his world traveling roots. For example, he came to Mobotropolis after Eggman took over instead of living in the city at the time.
Sonamy and Sonally are both valid ships and deserve support. But don’t hate on the other when it’s the version of Sonic that truly matters for deciding who is the better match for him.

Big fan of exploring robot characters' takes on gender (and associated things e.g. gendered pronouns 'cause my language doesn't have those) so asked about it:
Omega, while masculine coded, wouldn't care what others refer to him as because gender is not a relevant part of his identity: Being the "Ultimate (E-series) Robot" is what's important. Probably thrives off of being considered dangerous & identifies himself as a threat. (I do love different takes on this such as @generic-sonic-fan 's hc where Omega, in contrast, identifies with masculinity *very* strongly.) Anyways here's related art.
"Metal Sonic wants to be the one true Sonic. The real Sonic is already a 'he', so Metal has to be 'he'."
"Has to be," is an interesting statement. I'd like elaboration on (Metal's) reasoning for this: Is copying Sonic's traits "innate"/"natural" for Metal in a way where it's genuinely how he wishes to id, or is it a case of: All Metal knows is to copy Sonic, so he lacks an original identity? (Or that there is actual individuality under all that code and blue paint job, but Metal doesn't know how to/can't express it, or maybe doesn't want to acknowledge it at all?) Just thinking out loud here.

I don’t like it when they try giving food about ships with Sonic involved with him being flustered or shy about it. Idk I don’t think it fits him to react like that you know, I think he would try masking somehing silly he did because of a crush trying to play it cool but it ends up sounding really dumb, and if he’s caught on it he won’t deny it but won’t expose himself more and just try to change the subject…idk I just don’t think that of all things, THAT would be the thing to get him to stutter, his thing is not feeling shame or fear of his feelings! Live life to the fullest!
I know the bumblekast isn’t canon but when Ian portrays Sonic in ships as something more platonic than romantic and nobody can tell it’s a date unless he says it is seems to fit him soooo much better, I wonder why in the twitter takeovers they always make him act like someone else is writing him

KYLE CROUSE: Alright, here's a question from Milesprowerdavis. "Recently I lost a close family member. What fatherly advice or motherly advice would the main cast give? Team Dark and Light can add more of the characters. You can be funny with it. Interested what Dr Eggman would say."
youtube
IAN FLYNN: Well, first of all, deepest condolences. KYLE: Yes. IAN: Um, I would normally not want to answer in the way of a character, but this is your personal request, so I guess that takes the 'taboo' off it. KYLE: [chuckles] IAN: Uh, Sonic I don't think would give any kind of fatherly advice; he would let you figure out your own answer and be there for you as you figure it out on your own. He's gonna let you take that journey, but he's going to be there as you do it. Um, Amy would likewise- I don't know if she would give advice, but she would be there to console, to offer words of support, to be someone to listen, or to just talk so you don't have to think for a bit. She would do whatever you needed her to do at the time. Eggman... KYLE: [chuckles] IAN: We're gonna- we're gonna go the wholesome route this time, even if it is slightly out of character. [Eggman] would go on some long spiel about the entropy of the universe, and how everything is finite, and 'dust to dust' and yadda yadda. But you are still here, and that's what's important. You continue on the chain reactions that are life, so while that experiment is ended, you are the results that are continuing to create results! So, keep at it. And then kind of an awkward shoulder pat and wanders off. KYLE: [Eggman voice] "And soon, you will be part of the Eggman Empire anyways, so it does not matter!" IAN: [chuckles] Knuckles would kind of nod solemnly and say, "That's rough, buddy." KYLE: Yeah! [laughs] That is rough, buddy. It is very rough, buddy. IAN: But he means it! So it means something! KYLE: I mean, yeah! Yeah, yeah, yeah. And Tails? IAN: I don't know if Tails would know what to say. He would want to be- KYLE: I think Tails would be kind of lost, but he would try. IAN: He'd want to be encouraging, yeah. He'd want to be encouraging and supportive, but I think he'd feel a little overwhelmed with the responsibility. KYLE: Yeah... IAN: Um, Vector would start to mumble something that might sound... interesting, maybe? He kind of starts and stops his sentences every few seconds, then says, uh, [Vector voice] "Espio, tag in!" KYLE: [laughs] IAN: Then Espio starts getting kinda philosophical, and kinda loses his own train of thought, and goes quiet for a second. [Espio voice] "Charmy, tag in!" And then Charmy offers you ice cream. KYLE: [chuckles] I mean, I would appreciate all three of them, so yeah. That's wholesome. [after a pause] Hm... would Silver be, like...? IAN: I think Silver would be devastated. I think he values life on a personal level even more so than anyone else. KYLE: Okay, okay. IAN: Um, 'cause he- I think he has a better understanding of loss than any of the cast, to be perfectly honest. Sure, Knuckles is on his own, but he doesn't have any memory of what came before. That's kind of just his status quo. It's more of an existential thing. Silver... Silver has seen devastation. He has seen tragic loss and, y'know, impossible odds. So I think he would hold everything a little- every life a little more sacred. So I don't know if he would be able to impart any words of wisdom, but he would definitely be the most openly and, uh, earnestly sympathetic. KYLE: Mhm. Alright, I think that's enough, though... There's definitely many other characters we could ask, but that's enough for now.
--- TRANSCRIBER'S NOTE: Please remember that nothing that is said on BumbleKast is canon! It's just some guys and their opinions occasionally spitballing ideas. If you don't like an answer, you don't have to take it as Word of God or anything like that. It's all just for fun! ----- Do you want a specific question transcribed and posted? Send the question and the episode date to my ask box! Or if you just want questions about a certain character, send me their name and I will see what I can do!

Time to fill out that OC questionnaire but for Thistle this time!
He'll be in the @sonic-oc-showdown so be sure to give him a vote!
Name: Thistle the Tenrec
Species: Highland Streaked Tenrec
Home: Central City
✨How did you come up with the OC’s name?
Since he’s inspired by Amy I wanted to pick another prickly flower name. Thistle flowers can have a lot of negative connotations in flower language just as much as positive ones (aggressiveness, unwanted intrusion). If roses are known for being noble and lovely, thistles are more wild but pesky, they’re also hard to let go if you end up stuck by one. The image of thistle flower suited him the more I thought about it.
🌼  - How old are they? (Or approximate age range)
Same age as Surge.
🌺- Do they have any love interest(s)?
Currently Surge and only Surge. He’s had previous partners but they usually don’t last very long. Current record is 1 month.
(The only tragic thing about Thistle is that he's not trying to be the worst boyfriend ever. He really wants to do good but he's too self-centered and stupid to realize that he's the problem)
🍕  - What is their favorite food?
Key Lime Pie, he likes anything tart but sweet.
💼  - What do they do for a living?
Works part time at a flower shop in central city, he’s actually quite popular with customers.
🎹  - Do they have any hobbies?
Flower arrangement and astrology charting. Loves reading romance novels and watching old classic movies even if he gets the meaning of them completely wrong. He’s good at baking and also spends a lot of time online on social media. He’s a jack of all trades and always ready to learn something new to get closer with people in his life. He’s here for you. What more could you want from a guy :)
🎯  -What do they do best?
Anything that’s considered traditionally feminine Thistle excels at. Baking, shopping, event planning, crushing your enemies. But even with all of that he’s incredibly good at finding information. Does his new crush have a favorite band? Well Thistle just doxxed every band member and knows the rest of their schedule for the next 3 months.
🥊  -What do they love to do? What do they hate to do?
Thistle likes doing anything that will get him lots of compliments and attention, especially if it’s something he already finds fun. He’s the type to get really wrapped up in tedious side project so probably mapping out his and Surge’s life together via astrology
Hates doing something that doesn’t serve him in some way, like doing volunteer work for strangers. He also isn’t much of an adventuring type unless it’s to chase Surge down, he’d rather not though, he’d rather keep her tied down close to him and they can live a cozy domestic life.
Running around beating up robots getting sweaty and gross and for what? just to protect the masses? Awful, blech, Sonic can have that.
❤️  - What is one of your OC’s best memories?
One time he and Surge accidentally shared a soda, therefore doing the incredibly scandalous “indirect kiss”. She vaporized the soda can to destroy the evidence and then punched him in the gut when he told her. He passed out for about two days.
✂️   - What is one of your OC’s worst memories?
His first relationship was an online one where the other person ended up blocking him and then publicly warned other people about his creepy behavior.
Thistle made one of those “am I the asshole?” posts about their relationship and everyone in the forum went “yeah, you were totally the asshole.”
Thistle deleted all his accounts and started over. He learned nothing. “It’s the forum that was wrong, they were all just jealous.”
🧊  - Is their current design the first one?
There’s a few initial sketches I did to get the overall idea going and there’s a few minor tweaks but he’s basically the same design as when I started.
🍀  - What originally inspired the OC?
It was a bumblekast question asking about what a glitch Amy would be like and I liked the answer so much I wanted to develop it into a real character.
I really like aggressively-in-love characters like this in media actually, something about them being not shy at all about the person they’re in love with leads to a lot of funny or interesting situations, also since Surge is my favorite sonic character at the moment it’s fun thinking about how she would react to someone like this too. It’s a win-win situation for me lol.
🌂  - What genre do they belong in?
The villain in a shoujo romance manga
💚  - What is your OC’s gender identity and sexuality?
Identifies as male, Pan, he/him/they pronouns
🙌  - How many siblings does your OC have?
Zero. Probably for the best because he’s terrible with children.
🍎  - What is the OC’s relationship w/their parents like?
He’s an absolute mama’s boy when she’s around. (It should be noted that Thistle doesn’t really have a tragic backstory or bad childhood. He really is just like that for some reason.)
🧠  - What do you like most about the OC?
Thistle can be a lot of things I like about male characters (a goober in love, not afraid to appear “feminine”, a polite good boy, twisted priorities) and also be the worst person I’ve ever wanted to write thoughts for. He’s a very fun punching bag.
✏️  - How often do you draw/write about the OC?
Probably too much haha, I don’t usually write a lot of actual terrible people so he’s a refreshingly fun rom-com villain.
💎  - Do you ever see yourself killing off the OC?
It’s funnier if he stays alive imo. If Surge ever changes her ways in canon or something drastic happens to her he might lose interest in her and move on to his next victim, that’s about as close as I’d ever get to “killing him”. It would have to be a very drastic personality change though.
💀  - Does your OC have any phobias?
Whatever the fear of being unloved is.
To him, being loved by someone is the ultimate goal. “I can love so easily, why is it so hard for someone to stay in love with me? I must not be loving hard enough, I need to love someone who craves love just as much as I do. Yes, then it would be the ultimate romance”  - is basically the rationalization here.
🍩  -Who is your OC’s arch-nemesis or rival?
I mean probably Amy, not just for Surge’s sake, Amy will fight anyone she finds being a selfish creep in the name of love.
In Thistle's mind anyone who even smiles in Surge's direction is a rival. She's spoken for, who do they think they are??
🎓  - How long have you had the OC?
A little over a year!
🍥  - What age were you when you created the OC?

So about the bumblekast
"we don't know why more critics don't contact us, it's a missed opportunity on their part"
Why would anyone that dislikes your work pay money to hear excuses for your terrible creative decisions?
The issues are extremely obvious and their reason for being aren't too hard to figure out.
Paying money for answers is just ludicrous considering that these are the kind of things that could just be typed out and posted online somewhere.
4.) You quasi-stalk critics' blogs and people bring up strawmen of our criticisms to you, anyway. What could we possibly say that you haven't already heard? Or more accurately, that you thought you've heard?
5.) Flynn seems disdainful of anything even remotely critique-flavored being brought up - he once said "I don't even want to dignify that with a response" to a criticism someone paraphrased in the context of a question meant to refute it - so I doubt he'd entertain whatever we'd have to say. He also tends to strawmen our points, if not miss them entirely, such as pretending that folks were upset that Starline didn't get a happy ending when the real problem was that his ending was inconclusive, pointless, and wasteful.
I imagine the experience would be like trying to communicate in different languages. We're just on such completely different wavelengths that any attempt at communication will likely backfire. Add the fact that the pendulum most definitely does not swing in our favor, and it's just not a recipe for a good time.
6.) I have a strict do-not contact policy in place specifically because I don't want to talk to them. People are allowed to shittalk Sega's games on their personal blogs without Maekawa and Kishimoto being like "ur hurting our feelings, can't we have a conversation :c" about it
7.) Lavi paid a crisp hundred to ask Flynn questions about his work. In addition to Flynn giving circuitous answers that led nowhere and honestly sometimes coming across as annoyed that Lavi was even asking those questions to begin with, a lot of people really disliked the interview... To the point where they were mocking Lavi for asking "Why?" and praising Flynn for his patience.
8.) We get plenty of mileage out of the things you already say, thank you.
9.) Might as well ask why we don't want to run through a burning gauntlet lol.

(When someone asks Rough & Tumble about their ages)
Rough : Oh, I'm 4, and Tumble is 6 !
Mimic : What. You two are not that fucking young!
Starline : Not to mention you're twins.
Tumble : Yeah, We're twins. We just don't share a birthday.
Zavok : What?
Rough : Yeah! Every year, we fight to see who's birthday it's gonna be.
Tumble : And whoever wins turns a year older! The looser stays the same!
(Zavok quietly trying to do the math in his head)
Starline : Do you two at least know how old you were when you started this... tradition?
Rough : Nope.
Tumble : No idea.
(Zavok quietly gives up on the math)
Mimic : Do you two even know the day you were fucking born?
Rough : Nah, we just picked a random day.
Mimic : Fair.
Starline : Pardon?
Zavok : I can't say I've paid close attention to you Mobians and your smaller ages, but I'd say they're about the age you consider teenagers, just based on their behavior.
Mimic, getting flashbacks to having to work with Whisper during the original Diamond Cutters : Not again....
Tumble : Yeah, we can get behind that! We're uh- We're Sonic's age! How old is Sonic again?
Mimic : I don't know, maybe fifteen? Is he still fifteen?
Rough : Yeah! We're fifteen!
Tumble : Yep! We're fifteen now!
Starline : That's.... That's not how it - (tired and somewhat defeated sigh) Alright.
- Context & Headcanons under cut -
I was going to take this as an opportunity to show off the Bumblekast clip of Ian Flynn talking about how Rough & Tumble celebrate their birthday only to find out that I accidentally lost or deleted the screen recording at some point.
It does not help that because I'm Autistic and, therefore, struggle to read black text, making the concept of going through the Q&A Masterlist a nightmare.
Not to mention, I don't remember what year that question was from 🥲
[ Not mad just mildly annoyed that I lost the clip ]
But yeah, this incorrect quote post basically explains the Bumblekast's lore (based on my memory of it).
They don't know their actual birthday.
They picked a random date.
And they fight over who's birthday it is.
As for my headcanons :
Rough & Tumble are teenagers. High school age.
When Mimic was younger, he got annoyed about others trying to do things for his birthday (He does not like attention and has no idea how to accept kindness or gifts) so he just erased his date of birth from any records as he got older. He still knows his age and the year he was born. He just doesn't really have any specific day anymore.
The Original Diamond Cutters ages are wacky imo. Headcanon : Everyone in the team, except Whisper was an adult. Whisper was taken in as either a Tween or young Teen.

Happy [late] Halloween 2023!
Due to a rather cursed question on the Bumblekast, and the absolute lack of restraint or good taste found within the users of their discord server, something wonderful has happened!

Look man, there's nothing wrong with disliking someone's writing. Sometimes a writer's style or content is just not for you, and that's okay! It's okay even when the writer is super popular. For instance, I myself am not a fan of Tolkien or Neil Gaiman. Tokien takes way too long to get to the point for me, and at least in American Gods, Gaiman just used too many metaphors in quick succession, which made me feel the writing was pretentious to its detriment. It was Pratchett's style that made me love Good Omens, not Gaiman's.
Of course, that's not to say these men were / are bad writers! They're wildly beloved for a reason, after all. It's just to say their styles aren't for me. This happens sometimes. It's okay.
So when it comes to Sonic writer Ian Flynn, not everyone has to like his work. Heck, there are things he's written that I myself don't care for, such as:
The House of Cards arc in Archie
Sonic not correcting Kit when Kit called him "sir" in IDW
How the conflict between Tangle and Whisper was resolved in #58
Belle somehow knowing who Surge and Kit were despite Metal Sonic not knowing that
No writer on this planet is perfect, and that includes Ian Flynn. Good faith criticism of his work is natural, and from what I've heard on the Bumblekast (and I've listened to a good number of episodes at this point) he takes good faith criticism very well.
You'll notice, though, that I said good faith criticism. There is a difference between good faith criticism, and bad faith attacks. Here are some examples of each:
Good Faith Criticism:
I feel that [character] was written out of character in [thing] when you consider recent characterization in other things (with emphasis on recent; games that came out 16 years ago may no longer align with Sega's view of the character)
I think that the writing was a little sloppy here for the sake of speeding the plot along
I don't enjoy this plot arc because of the pacing / the themes / the characters being focused on
These are good faith criticisms because they don't attack the person or people who created the work; they make sure to note that this is personal opinion / preference on behalf of the critic; and they're grounded in reality, rather than conspiracy.
Bad Faith Criticism:
The writer on this licensed product HATES the IP and HATES these characters and wants to make them something totally different
All of the writers on staff are LYING when they say the company that owns the license they are working on has rules they have to follow
The writers have an AGENDA they're pushing and that's the ONLY reason why they're working on this licensed product at all; if they say they're doing it for love of the series or work they are lying once again
These are bad faith criticisms because they attack the people who make the works directly; they contain baseless accusations as a form of defense against the idea that the parent company could be moving their mascot and characters in a new direction; and altogether they paint the writers as some sort of nefarious masterminds instead of what they actually are: people who are fallible.
And then of course, there is always something so unhinged it's even worse than the above:
Heinous Behavior:
I hope [writer] dies and I'll celebrate when they do!
This sort of behavior isn't even criticism. It's just heinous, and I shouldn't need to explain why. Disliking someone's work is fine. Talking about why you dislike the work is fine. Wishing death on someone because you dislike their work (or dislike that people enjoy their work) is deplorable behavior. When you are at this stage, you need to log off the internet and go sit alone in a quiet place to reflect upon your behavior. Also, if a children's comic (or discussions about a children's comic) is making you this deranged, perhaps consider seeking counseling, because this sort of reaction to a franchise about a blue hedgehog is not healthy.
Overall, there are healthy and unhealthy ways to engage with media. If a piece of media is making you seethe with rage to the point where other people enjoying it makes you think wishing death on an innocent person is okay, you should probably find another piece of media to engage with. It's not difficult to not read a comic or block fans whose opinons upset you. Actually, it's quite easy and I recommend it.
Be decent to each other. That's all anyone asks.

I need to get this off my chest.
I’ve been vocal about the IDW/Ian Flynn haters in the past. In fact, they’re the entire reason why I mostly left this platform. But it never ends. Whether it’s on tumblr or twitter or even in twitch chats, it never ends!
Don’t you get tired? Just go somewhere else? Just ignore the comics. The argument always comes up of “We can’t ignore it, they’ll ruining Sonic.” You can. You absolutely can!
I very much hate the Animal Crossing series now despite having liked it in the past. You don’t see me constantly writing essays about how bad it is. You don’t see me hating on every bit of news that comes out with it.
Comic books are a monthly narrative. They’re a medium very different from video games. I understand that people want Sonic to be a particular way. I do too, if I’m being honest. But I’m also aware that it’s a different interpretation as has been Archie Sonic, Movie Sonic, Fleetway Sonic, X Sonic, Underground Sonic, and so on. Sonic always changes based on the medium and interpretation. Heck, he changes between games. Sonic being “chatty” in the comics is a different interpretation and part of the entire medium of comic books. It’s how reading works.
I’m not going to claim that IDW or Ian Flynn are perfect. Is Sonic too morally righteous in the comics? Yes. Is Shadow written as an edgelord and against his growth from the game canon? Yes. Does Eggman lacking any back-up plans seem idiotic? Yes. Have the stories gotten a bit too repetitive with them constantly going to the Eggperial City? Yes. Is this something worth exploding over every month? NO!
All media is going to have things that aren’t perfect. You’re allowed to dislike it, but where is the line drawn in how much you need to vent about it?
The reason I want to write this post is how the “opinions” against the comics and Flynn have gotten to this unavoidable, venomous point. I’ve seen haters say how they’re excited to see the IDW sales fall so the comics eventually get canceled. How they want to take this particular faction of the Sonic fandom and dissolve it. I ask this genuinely: What is wrong with you!? Just because you dislike a particular part of a series means you want it destroyed even for those who enjoy it? Grow up. It’s selfish, mean, and just not what fandom is supposed to be about. The insults, the name-calling, the mob mentality, and everything coming out of this negative side of the fandom is really, really gross.
I’ve seen many haters always say that there are IDW-lovers who have also bullied, name-called, and even sent death threats. Now, I have never seen these myself besides retaliating against the haters who go too far. But I have never ever seen death threats over this (it could have been to previous writers and I may be mistaken). Now, I am stating it right here that just because I didn’t see these posts doesn’t mean they don’t exist. If they do, I obviously do not condone that behavior. It is awful! But I also see the haters bringing up these examples to justify any action they take. I’ve lost track of how many times it’s been brought up. First off, you know (if the posts do exist) that it’s a couple of bad apples amongst plenty of normal fans. But it’s brought up so often that I wonder... is it still a legitimate justification for how you’re acting? Even if it was one bad post, how much mileage can you get out of that? Does it still legitimize how you’ve been currently talking about others? Does it make your bullying fair? Your words do hurt and they do get to the ears of those you’re talking about.
And about Ian Flynn. You all need to stop. No, Ian Flynn is not perfect. No, I don’t think his Bumblekast things help a lot; in fact, it muddies a lot of the waters. But it’s a stupid podcast on the side... just ignore it. You do that with what’s actually written in the comic already. However you feel about him, Ian Flynn has contributed a lot to Sonic through Archie, IDW, and the games.
But there’s such a hatred for anything Ian Flynn puts his name on. I have a former friend who hated Sonic Frontiers before it came out simply because Ian Flynn was attached to it. The moment they heard he was the head writer, they wrote the game off. I am 100% sure that no matter how Frontiers or the story within it turned out, they would have disliked it. Just because Ian Flynn was in the end credits. The insults thrown at Ian Flynn, the artists, and writers of the IDW comics are inexcusable. If he has two characters even share a panel, you call it shipbaiting. If two female characters have a fight, you claim it’s written by a sexist man. If a villain is killed off-screen or turns out to be alive, you complain. This last point is exactly how a monthly, serialized story works. I don’t know if you’re unfamiliar with comic books outside of Sonic, but this is how the medium just is. Said villain gets killed and you shout foul about how the one “queer” character was killed. How the writers are homophobic for “leading readers on” and then killing him. There have been racists posts about the fandom praising Flynn over Japanese writers. You make posts ranting and raving how Nite and Don being a gay couple is bad because they’re “nothing characters” and then you post about how Don abandoned Nite... despite the fact that literally ONE PAGE LATER, he comes back to essentially die with his boyfriend.
It makes me wonder if the haters actually READ the comics or if they scan, decide they don’t like something, and then get angry. Sonic is a comic series under mandates and rules, especially after everything that went down with Archie. No, I’m not saying these mandates are excuses for poor characterization or writing, but it does somewhat explain why certain characters are handled in certain ways. The IDW comic writers are people with the freedom to take the characters in certain directions. That’s all. They’re creators working hard.
The defenses you all set up to lean back on Pontac and Graff is also bewildering. Now, if you love the “Meta Era” of games then that’s totally fine. I honestly don’t care which games you like. But retroactively praising the writing of games like Sonic Lost World and Sonic Forces is odd. Yes, Pontac and Graff are human beings and don’t deserve the massive hate and mistreatment they’ve been dealt. But their work is rightfully criticized. We went through over a decade of poor writing and canon being completely screwed up. But some of you will defend them because Eggman said he’d strangle a zeti or that the way he said the sun would crush the heroes justified so much in Forces. Why are you willing to die on this hill? For four games? For four games that have objectively more lighthearted and cookie cutter plots?
I’m not perfect in this. For a while, when Sonic Forces came out. I would make post after post about it. After a couple of months, I realized that I simply hated the game and I was harming the experience of people who liked it. I made an apology and I stopped. I still hate Sonic Forces. It’s still my most hated Sonic game, but you don’t see me reacting to the Infinite mini figure getting announced by making weeks of posts saying how badly he was written.
Just get over it. Move on. Stop hating on the aspects of a thing you’re supposed to be a fan of. Aren’t you miserable? Sonic the Hedgehog has been such a positive influence on my life. Sonic has inspired me, gotten me through bad times, and has introduced me to some of the best people I have ever met.
Why stick around and constantly surround yourself with such negativity? Again, I don’t hang around Animal Crossing things anymore and I’m personally better off for it. You’re in a fandom, but are you even fans anymore? You’ll hate everything that comes out simply because a particular writer is attached or because you’ve decided the comics have betrayed your headcanons. It’s gotten to the point where the IDW Haters really have become a joke. People see what you’re saying and it’s affecting the perception of the fandom. Moreover, you’re actively ruining the experience for fans around you and are voicing that you hope it fails.
That’s not what being part of a fandom is about. I am so, so, so tired of seeing negativity about the comics and Ian Flynn. Again, honest opinions are fine and I want people to feel how they feel. Their feelings should be valid. But having your opinions and becoming toxic to the point that you’re notorious for it... is just too much.
I love Sonic as I am sure many other fans do. Hell, there’s definitely love for Sonic with the IDW-haters as well; you wouldn’t feel so passionately about the blue blur if you didn’t care. But just take some perspective and realize what this is doing.
I had a good friend once who I thought would be somebody I could always relate to for good and bad. This friend would get angry if I didn’t agree to certain comments about Dr. Eggman and would be upset if I didn’t reply in a certain way to certain posts. It was like walking on egg shells. It came to a point where I needed to separate myself from that person. They became constantly toxic about all things modern Sonic. It made me feel depressed and guilty just to enjoy the series that I love. Toxicity is something that just corrodes you to the pit of your soul if it goes too deep. I miss this friend, but I don’t think I can ever truly be friends with them that way again. It affects me so often to this day.
Please, feel how you feel about Sonic comics, movies, games, whatever. Just realize how much your distaste for something is affecting you, your friendships, and others. I can’t stand this kind of drama anymore. I just want to love Sonic and want people to love Sonic as well. That’s what fandom is supposed to be about.

MORE behind the scenes Sonic info and other tidbits from the BumbleKast as I continue to get caught up. These range from September 2022 to early December. (This means there are spoilers for Frontiers in here.)
They're doing episodes even more often now, so I've got a lot to catch up on and I'm sure most of y'all do too!
1. The IDW comics are, in fact, canon to the games now. Ian was a little coy when first asked about it, saying he "would not argue against it" if people said the IDW comics were canon to the games now. "I have made it clear that the comics follow the lead of the games, so… as long as there's no contradictions anywhere, we're good." So, yeah, come on. The comics are canon.
2. Ian apparently pitched another idea for incorporating Sticks into the IDW series last year that was once again shot down, although he says this only makes him want to dig his heels in and try harder. (I'm assuming most of you are already aware of her shout out in Frontiers, confirming she's out there, somewhere...)
3. If Surge was a streamer, Ian thinks she would just grief people on Fortnite
4. On the October 7th, 2022 show, Ian says there is a behind-the-scenes answer for how the depiction of Silver's future in '06 can fit together with Rivals and Rush... but he can't talk about it right now.
It's hard to convey his tone through text, so just imagine he's saying all this with a big, defeated shrug:
"Here's the thing. Working on something else, I actually did get a straight answer, and it was... frustratingly simple. And, it's like, 'That works. [sigh] Okay!' No, I can't get into it - that's all private work stuff - but maybe it'll come to light eventually. But... there is an answer. And it works. And I kinda feel dumb for not thinking of it."
I honestly have no idea what this could be if it's something Ian hadn't considered, because he has talked about popular theories and readings before, such as the reading that Blaze was transported to the Sol Dimension at the end of '06. Maybe we'll hear about it in the comics, since Silver and Blaze are both back right now, or maybe they'll be the subject of a TailsTube episode.
5. Froggy is not sentient in any way he really is just a frog
6. Unrelated to Sonic, Ian was asked "who is best pony" and he said Fluttershy. My longest yeah boy ever dot jpeg
7. With Surge and Kit originally being pitched as purely synthetic beings before Sega suggested they be cyborgs instead, Ian says they would've struggled with whether or not they're even real, as opposed to the end product where they struggle with not knowing who they were before Starline modified them
8. When the female cast of Archie Sonic stopped getting drawn so busty all the time that was, in fact, a very specific editorial mandate from someone at Archie. Sega, on the other hand, has never cared.
9. Now that we're back to Classic and Modern being part of one nebulous timeline and the divide being more of a branding thing, Ian explicitly confirmed that the Classic-themed IDW Sonic comics are set in the past of the mainline IDW Sonic comics. They're set sometime after the events of Mania, and before all the Modern stuff. Just don't think too hard about it
But hey! If it's any consolation, this now means all the Classic characters like Mighty, Nack, and Honey are out there off-screen in the world of the regular comics, even if the casts are remaining separate for branding reasons for now. It also means Shadow is out there being held in a pod in a maximum security off-shore military prison during the events of all the lighthearted Classic comics lmao
10. Ian reiterates yet again that he's still pushing to try and get the Freedom Fighters back in some capacity where he can (as are others). He also says that he's pushing for them to return as a group rather than requesting individual members because he believes that's the best shot at getting any of them through Sega's approval process.
(I can't remember when the last time this came up was, but Ian has also implied that he thinks their best shot is to return as Classic characters since their one game appearance is Spinball.)
11. Ian outright confirms that the forward-looking character arcs in Frontiers are reflective of what he would like to see out of the main cast moving forward in the games. Not surprising since that's, like... the whole point of those arcs! But nice that he wants it to only be the beginning.
Ian does also say, however, that he's not guaranteed to return as the writer for future games since he's still a freelancer, but to editorialize here, I don't see why they wouldn't want him back for the next project.
12. On the subject of Amy's characterization in Frontiers, Ian personally pins her general seriousness mostly on the fact that she's the companion for the first island, where the mysterious and somber tone Sega wanted for the story is being established and Sonic is still trying to figure out what to do. He says that she'd probably have been more bubbly if she was interacting with Sonic on the second or third island, after he starts to get his bearings. I hoped this was the reason why she felt a little dry compared to Knuckles and Tails, so it's nice to hear this isn't the new direction for Amy or anything.
13. While "officially" Sage's name is just an anagram of Sega and a reference to her wisdom, Ian seems to be cheekily implying that it's also a nod to the annual Sonic Amateur Games Expo. Hell yeah.
14. When asked to clear up some Frontiers lore from the Egg Memos, Ian explicitly confirmed that some of the Ancients left the Starfall Islands and went on to devolve into the Chao as we know them today over the course of tens of thousands of years. He says, however, that this doesn't mean that Ancients and Chao are literally the same species, comparing it to the difference between humans and australopithecus. But yes, they're related.

Prophet AU: Battle Lord Kukku (mixed with Achacha!)
Essentially, he shapes the empire to think of flight/birds being perfection. He basically made a utopia :’]
Well for the first thing, he shapes Speedy to think of the place as amazing as it would be and gives Speedy probably too much self esteem. *The empire most likely prisons and maybe “takes out” anyone who disobeys the force
Tumblr media
The events that Battle Lord Kukku made mainly was: Take over Coco Island, create Project Missle (Bean), Speedy left so now chases the two birds and UHH THATS IT SO FAR
Battle Lord Kukku becomes more of a threat when Speedy decides to leave the empire and who takes Speedy’s place? Predator.
You might not remember him, but he’s the guy that hated how Speedy got to have such a high place where Predator worked hard for everything.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My Battle Lord Kukku would figure since Predator already was brainwashed into thinking “WOW THIS WOULD BE GREAT TO WORK WITH”, it would be a smart choice to put him in charge, since he’s so loyal.
And obviously there would be such banter and fighting every time Battle Lord Kukku decides to bother Team Nightmare. I posted a bumblekast somewhere in the past and it showed that Fang would not turn Bean in (to the Battle Bird Armada) since it’s *his* gang and no one can take *his* team. So of course I kept that >:]
(Rouge would be just as mad because Team Nightmare is her team)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don’t know much about the Achacha mixing, but he most likely captured people XD
