#justice for the canned lamb stew

i see people constantly breaking down over how hijacked peeta still remembered katniss’s favorite color but i feel that the fact that he gave her a canned lamb stew is a little bit overlooked??? like- despite everything they did to him, his memories from their time in the cave (and maybe more things, but i’m headed in that direction bc in mockingjay katniss specifically thought about when they ate the stew together) during the 74th games were so engraved in his mind that he saw the can, read the label saying “lamb stew” and he thought about how she had enjoyed that dish so much that they ended up deciding to wait an hour to eat another serving back when they were in the arena, so he gave the can to her because he wanted her to have the pleasure of eating her favorite capitol dish once more. i’m incredibly sick.

The Ultimate Mediterranean Diet Cooking for One Cookbook by Kelly Jaggers
Tumblr media
Kelly Jaggers’ The Ultimate Mediterranean Diet Cooking for One Cookbook is a great and comprehensive collection of single-serving Mediterranean recipes. I love the impressive range of easy-to-follow recipes as well as the helpful tips. However, the book’s layout could have been nicer and I would have loved more pictures.
This well-organised book features chapters on Breakfast; Dips and Snacks; Salads and Soups; Side Dishes; Pasta Dishes; Vegetarian Main Dishes; Seafood; Poultry Dishes; Pork, Lamb, and Beef Dishes; and Desserts. There is also a helpful chapter introducing readers to the Mediterranean diet as well as the process of cooking for one. Jaggers gives useful tips (fresh herbs can be placed in water and stored in the fridge!) and also lists important pantry staples and ingredients like beans, olive oil, and canned tuna. This chapter also features useful tools and equipment.
Although many of the recipes may be time or labour-intensive, all the dishes in this book are approachable for beginner cooks. Many of the ingredients are affordable and accessible pantry staples like chicken, flour, and pasta. However, several of the dishes require quite a few specialty ingredients like feta cheese, clams, polenta, and quinoa. But, they are still moderately inexpensive and not too difficult to find.
There are easy dishes like Spinach and Mozzarella Frittata (made easier with frozen shredded hash brown potatoes), Shrimp Scampi, and Easy Pesto Chicken. You can also try familiar favourites like Shakshuka, Tzatziki Sauce, Baba Ghanoush, and Minestrone Soup. Slightly more difficult dishes include Lasagna Rolls, Beef Stew with Red Wine, and Beef and Mushroom Stroganoff. There are even simple but impressively decadent sweet treats like White Wine-Poached Pear, Frozen Fruity Yogurt Bark, and Red Wine-Poached Figs with Ricotta and Almonds.
The recipes are clearly detailed and easy-to-follow. Each recipe begins with a brief but informative write-up offering helpful tips, useful facts on a main ingredient, tasting notes, ingredient swaps, and a short background of the dish. I also appreciate the inclusion of calorie information and other nutritional values.
The book’s layout is simple and clean but boring. I wish the design was more eye-catching. Furthermore, there are only a sparse handful of pictures which are too simply staged and which do not do the delicious recipes any justice. I would love many more pictures so I can see how the dishes should look.
Thank you to NetGalley and Adams Media for this book in exchange for an honest review.

Hiiii! Here’s part two of my Katniss and Peeta Taking Of Each Other bookcomb! It’s pretty long so … sorry 😬. There was a lot I didn’t include and a lot I wasn’t sure about including, because so much of Catching Fire and Mockingjay is about them wanting to protect the other but I tried to narrow it down to actual acts that were caring, or times they at least tried to care for the other.
-
Then, as if I can’t stand it another second, I start running. He catches me and spins me around and then he slips — he still isn’t entirely in command of his artificial leg — and we fall into the snow, me on top of him, and that’s where we have our first kiss in months. It’s full of fur and snowflakes and lipstick, but underneath all that, I can feel the steadiness that Peeta brings to everything. And I know I’m not alone. As badly as I have hurt him, he won’t expose me in front of the cameras. Won’t condemn me with a halfhearted kiss. He’s still looking out for me. Just as he did in the arena. Somehow the thought makes me want to cry. Instead I pull him to his feet, tuck my glove through the crook of his arm, and merrily pull him on our way.
-
“We’re going!” says Peeta, shoving the Peacekeeper who’s pressing on me. “We get it, all right? Come on, Katniss.” His arm encircles me and guides me back into the Justice Building. The Peacekeepers follow a pace or two behind us.
-
Effie starts giving me pills to sleep, but they don’t work. Not well enough. I drift off only to be roused by nightmares that have increased in number and intensity. Peeta, who spends much of the night roaming the train, hears me screaming as I struggle to break out of the haze of drugs that merely prolong the horrible dreams. He manages to wake me and calm me down. Then he climbs into bed to hold me until I fall back to sleep. After that, I refuse the pills. But every night I let him into my bed. We manage the darkness as we did in the arena, wrapped in each other’s arms, guarding against dangers that can descend at any moment.
-
“He was poaching. What business is it of hers, anyway?” says the man.
“He’s her cousin.” Peeta’s got my other arm now, but gently. “And she’s my fiancée. So if you want to get to him, expect to go through both of us.”
-
When my mother has locked the door behind them, I slump against the table.
“What is it?” says Peeta, holding me steadily.
“Oh, I banged up my left foot. The heel. And my tailbone’s had a bad day, too.” He helps me over to one of the rockers and I lower myself onto the padded cushion.
My mother eases off my boots. “What happened?”
“I slipped and fell,” I say. Four pairs of eyes look at me with disbelief. “On some ice.” But we all know the house must be bugged and it’s not safe to talk openly. Not here, not now.
-
My mother gives me a cup of chamomile tea with a dose of sleep syrup, and my eyelids begin to droop immediately. She wraps my bad foot, and Peeta volunteers to get me to bed. I start out by leaning on his shoulder, but I’m so wobbly he just scoops me up and carries me upstairs. He tucks me in and says good night but I catch his hand and hold him there.
-
Peeta sits on the side of the bed, warming my hand in both of his. “Almost thought you’d changed your mind today. When you were late for dinner.”
I’m foggy but I can guess what he means. With the fence going on and me showing up late and the Peacekeepers waiting, he thought I’d made a run for it, maybe with Gale.
“No, I’d have told you,” I say. I pull his hand up and lean my cheek against the back of it, taking in the faint scent of cinnamon and dill from the breads he must have baked today.
-
Each afternoon he carries me downstairs for a change of scenery and I unnerve everyone by turning on the television.
-
Effie, shining in a wig of metallic gold, lacks her usual verve. She has to claw around the girls’ reaping ball for quite a while to snag the one piece of paper that everyone already knows has my name on it. Then she catches Haymitch’s name. He barely has time to shoot me an unhappy look before Peeta has volunteered to take his place.
-
“Why would he paint a picture of me, Effie?” I ask, somehow annoyed.
“To show he’s going to do everything he can to defend you. That’s what everyone in the Capitol’s expecting, anyway. Didn’t he volunteer to go in with you?” Effie says, as if it’s the most obvious thing in the world.
-
I lock my fingers tightly into his and say, “Watch my feet. Just try to step where I step.” It helps. We seem to move a little faster, but never enough to afford a rest, and the mist continues to lap at our heels.
-
Peeta and Finnick and I position ourselves in a triangle, a few yards apart, our backs to one another. My heart sinks as my fingers draw back my last arrow. Then I remember Peeta has a sheath, too. And he’s not shooting, he’s hacking away with that knife. My own knife is out now, but the monkeys are quicker, can spring in and out so fast you can barely react.
“Peeta!” I shout. “Your arrows!”
Peeta turns to see my predicament and is sliding off his sheath when it happens. A monkey lunges out of a tree for his chest. I have no arrow, no way to shoot. I can hear the thud of Finnick’s trident finding another mark and know his weapon is occupied. Peeta’s knife arm is disabled as he tries to remove the sheath. I throw my knife at the oncoming mutt but the creature somersaults, evading the blade, and stays on its trajectory.
Weaponless, defenseless, I do the only thing I can think of. I run for Peeta, to knock him to the ground, to protect his body with mine, even though I know I won’t make it in time.
-
While I help Peeta coat his skin with the ointment, Finnick deftly cleans the meat from the shellfish.
-
I stretch out, pressing my hot cheek on the grass mat, staring at the thing in aggravation. Peeta rubs a tense spot between my shoulders and I let myself relax a little.
-
I know it’s stopped when I feel Peeta’s hands on me, feel myself lifted from the ground and out of the jungle. But I stay eyes squeezed shut, hands over my ears, muscles too rigid to release. Peeta holds me on his lap, speaking soothing words, rocking me gently. It takes a long time before I begin to relax the iron grip on my body. And when I do, the trembling begins.
“It’s all right, Katniss,” he whispers.
-
“Katniss!” I hear his voice though he’s a far distance away. But what is he doing? Peeta must have figured out that everyone is hunting us by now. “Katniss!”
I can’t protect him. I can’t move fast or far and my shooting abilities are questionable at best. I do the one thing I can to draw the attackers away from him and over to me. “Peeta!” I scream out. “Peeta! I’m here! Peeta!” Yes, I will draw them in, any in my vicinity, away from Peeta and over to me and the lightning tree that will soon be a weapon in and of itself. “I’m here! I’m here!” He won’t make it. Not with that leg in the night. He will never make it in time. “Peeta!”
-
I’m rattled by the turn in the conversation. The implications that I could so readily dispose of Peeta, that I’m in love with Gale, that the whole thing has been an act. My cheeks begin to burn. The very notion that I’m devoting any thought to who I want presented as my lover, given our current circumstances, is demeaning. I let my anger propel me into my greatest demand. “When the war is over, if we’ve won, Peeta will be pardoned.”
-
At the mention of my name, Peeta’s face contorts in effort. “Katniss . . . how do you think this will end? What will be left? No one is safe. Not in the Capitol. Not in the districts. And you . . . in Thirteen . . .” He inhales sharply, as if fighting for air; his eyes look insane. “Dead by morning!”
Off camera, Snow orders, “End it!” Beetee throws the whole thing into chaos by flashing a still shot of me standing in front of the hospital at three-second intervals. But between the images, we are privy to the real-life action being played out on the set. Peeta’s attempt to continue speaking. The camera knocked down to record the white tiled floor. The scuffle of boots. The impact of the blow that’s inseparable from Peeta’s cry of pain.
And his blood as it splatters the tiles.
-
I poke around in the pile, about to settle on some cod chowder, when Peeta holds out a can to me. “Here.” I take it, not knowing what to expect. The label reads LAMB STEW.
I press my lips together at the memories of rain dripping through stones, my inept attempts at flirting, and the aroma of my favorite Capitol dish in the chilly air. So some part of it must still be in his head, too. How happy, how hungry, how close we were when that picnic basket arrived outside our cave.
-
In the fluorescent light, the circles under his eyes look like bruises. “There’s still time. You should sleep.” Unresisting, he lies back down, but just stares at the needle on one of the dials as it twitches from side to side. Slowly, as I would with a wounded animal, my hand stretches out and brushes a wave of hair from his forehead. He freezes at my touch, but doesn’t recoil. So I continue to gently smooth back his hair. It’s the first time I have voluntarily touched him since the last arena.
“You’re still trying to protect me. Real or not real,” he whispers.
“Real,” I answer. It seems to require more explanation. “Because that’s what you and I do. Protect each other.” After a minute or so, he drifts off to sleep.
-
“Katniss!” He whips his head toward me but doesn’t seem to notice my bow, the waiting arrow. “Katniss! Get out of here!”
I hesitate. His voice is alarmed, but not insane. “Why? What’s making that sound?”
“I don’t know. Only that it has to kill you,” says Peeta. “Run! Get out! Go!”
-
It’s a long shot, it’s suicide maybe, but I do the only thing I can think of. I lean in and kiss Peeta full on the mouth. His whole body starts shuddering, but I keep my lips pressed to his until I have to come up for air. My hands slide up his wrists to clasp his. “Don’t let him take you from me.”
Peeta’s panting hard as he fights the nightmares raging in his head. “No. I don’t want to . . .”
I clench his hands to the point of pain. “Stay with me.”
His pupils contract to pinpoints, dilate again rapidly, and then return to something resembling normalcy. “Always,” he murmurs.
I help Peeta up and address Pollux.
-
While Cressida and Pollux make fur nests for each of us, I attend to Peeta’s wrists. Gently rinsing away the blood, putting on an antiseptic, and bandaging them beneath the cuffs.
-
By the time I make it back to the fence, I’m so sick and dizzy, Thom has to give me a ride home in the dead people’s cart. Help me to the sofa in the living room, where I watch the dust motes spin in the thin shafts of afternoon light.
My head snaps around at the hiss, but it takes awhile to believe he’s real. How could he have gotten here? I take in the claw marks from some wild animal, the back paw he holds slightly above the ground, the prominent bones in his face. He’s come on foot, then, all the way from 13. Maybe they kicked him out or maybe he just couldn’t stand it there without her, so he came looking.
[…]
Out of nowhere, the tears begin to pour down my cheeks. “She’s dead.” I clutch my middle to dull the pain. Sink down on my heels, rocking the pillow, crying. “She’s dead, you stupid cat. She’s dead.” A new sound, part crying, part singing, comes out of my body, giving voice to my despair. Buttercup begins to wail as well. No matter what I do, he won’t go. He circles me, just out of reach, as wave after wave of sobs racks my body, until eventually I fall unconscious. But he must understand. He must know that the unthinkable has happened and to survive will require previously unthinkable acts. Because hours later, when I come to in my bed, he’s there in the moonlight. Crouched beside me, yellow eyes alert, guarding me from the night.
-
Peeta, bearing a warm loaf of bread, shows up with Greasy Sae. She makes us breakfast and I feed all my bacon to Buttercup.
-
I wake screaming from nightmares of mutts and lost children. But his arms are there to comfort me. And eventually his lips. On the night I feel that thing again, the hunger that overtook me on the beach, I know this would have happened anyway.
-
Peeta says it will be okay. We have each other. And the book. We can make them understand in a way that will make them braver.

random thoughts about TSOMD (massive spoilers ahead!)
1) dr pei jokingly saying 毒死你 to tangfan; tangfan later actually being poisoned near death and only dr pei could save him
2) wangzhi smiling and taking tangfan’s hand: whenever you need me, I’ll be at your side
3) that corrupt Official Huang telling suizhou: one day you too will be like me and lose all that you hold dear—I wonder if you’ll still think the same way then (referring to suizhou’s sense of justice and integrity)
3.5) suizhou having violent episodes without tangfan at his side; suizhou ransacking all those innocent people’s homes in the tieshi because he MUST find tangfan dammit
4) duoerla fixing tangfan’s chopsticks—tangfan fixing her/alasi’s cloak
5) color schemes: tangfan mostly in beige and white, suizhou mostly in darker blues, wangzhi in reds and golds—as the story progresses, their color schemes change and bleed into one another’s
6) dong’er truly being the lovechild of fanzhou; wanting to save as many people as she can, refuses to think only for herself
7) wangzhi’s progression of being Soft; the way he looked at all the beggar orphan children with such a tight and wounded expression
7.5) wangzhi using less and less torture throughout the show; goes from not giving a damn about people other than for their use to him to not being able to execute dingrong because he can’t afford to/bear to
8) tangfan accusing wangzhi that the latter is willing to do anything to achieve his goals, sacrificing personal sentiment and the people around him—and then wangzhi’s genuine worry in the tangfan vs the empire decision and the emperor vs the empire decision
9) suizhou not trusting wangzhi but also because he doesn’t want to put him in a difficult position during the first cases; wangzhi expressing genuine concern for suizhou’s safety when the man is jailed
9.5) confirmation from the actors themselves that the reason wangzhi refused to let suizhou approach the carriage was because if they couldn’t save tangfan, at least he could save suizhou and not lose two people he loves in one night
10) the motif of suizhou locking tangfan behind bars—he wants to keep him safe no matter what; the juxtaposition of a veteran and a scholar, what their hands have seen and held
11) tangfan and duoerla’s first awkward language barrier conversation: the stars look different here than they do on the plains—duoerla never got to return to the plains because of a device built by a man who wanted to soar in the sky among the stars
11.5) the actors (fumengbo and liuyaoyuan) shaking their heads over the doomed romance between tangfan and duoerla
12) suizhou’s repeating nightmares (a circular mound of corpses) and how his life comes to revolve around tangfan
12.5) lizilong dying in a circle of corpses; a vicious cycle of bloodshed and vengeance; suizhou learned to let go of his vendetta against the oirat and grow and become healthier by focusing on the present and the people who currently love him
13) tangfan literally being UNABLE to do any harm ever but always accidentally brushing against suizhou’s wounds; suizhou who grits his teeth through so much torture and only winces openly and vocally when it’s tangfan
14) of course the explosion parallel from three years prior to now; the way their characters interacted to their care for each other now, similar visuals to the damage done and how each person was hurt
15) tangfan asking about love to his sister and dr pei (for a case), but also very clearly with someone in mind too...
16) wangzhi’s smiles becoming less purposefully charming and polite and more and more Tender toward the people around him; wangzhi starting off intrigued by tangfan as someone useful to him—then letting tangfan nap in his carriage, directly taking tangfan’s hand to lead him away, saving tangfan’s ass from the emperor, snapping tangfan out of his depressed delusion
16.5) wangzhi’s character revolves around smiles; the imperial consort told him that to live in the palace, he must remember to smile
17) parallels between emperor and imperial consort running to each other and tangfan and suizhou running to each other with flashbacks in-between of their scenes together; one is injured, the other catches them in their arms; fanzhou is confirmed by a canon romantic relationship
18) food is the love language of this show; the imperial consort feeding baby wangzhi, dong’er bringing snacks for tangfan/later cooking for him too, wangzhi keeping tangfan well-fed with lamb and teasingly saying he’s gained weight (since weight gain is a since of fortune/prosperity with chinese culture!), wangzhi cooking for and with dong’er (the dish is a symbol of family reunion, dong’er exclaims), duo’erla using a bone to fix tangfan’s chopsticks and also bringing him that huge pot of stew, wuyun stuffing meat into tangfan’s mouth, dr pei and his tomatoes and tangfan
18.5) all of fanzhou’s love declarations revolve around food
when suizhou thinks tangfan is dead: “we have to go home to eat! dong’er is still waiting for us, tang fan!”
when tangfan thinks suizhou is dying: “if you die, what’s going to happen to me? i don’t know how to cook, who’s going to cook for me, guangchuan?!”
and when suizhou is searching for tangfan: “he’s been captured for so long, he must be starving. i have to find him quickly and bring him home to eat food.”
19) wangzhi to suizhou: “perhaps [tangfan] would keep things from me, but from you?”
suizhou to wangzhi: “you and i know the best what kind of person [tangfan] is.”
wangzhi to tangfan and suizhou: “i don’t have many friends. for these past days, thank you both.”
wangzhi to suizhou about tangfan: “if it were anyone other than tangfan, do you think i’d be here waiting?”
tangfan claiming it wouldn’t be a big deal if he died in front of both suizhou and wangzhi
suizhou to tangfan, accepting their dire situation but still: “your safe return is worth ten thousand fortunes.”
wangzhi saying he’ll miss them both
tangfan, believing he just watched wangzhi get killed: “your trust in guangchuan and me caused your death/was your downfall”
ot3 is superior
20) tangfan using both hands to grasp suizhou’s one, “take care”
21) the poem tangfan recites to dong’er when he’s near-death; tangfan telling her, sooner or later, everybody must leave this world (all of ot3 nearly dies, duo’erla does die)
21.5) he also tells her, even you must grow up. parallel to imperial consort telling wangzhi, “you’ve finally grown up. you have the power to protect his majesty, and i am very happy.”
22) dingrong who looked like he was crying when he thought wangzhi died; wangzhi calling him “too kind” because he didn’t kill wangzhi and then wangzhi ALSO not killing dingrong; dingrong still looking bemusedly fond at the end despite everything

Food in Netflix’s Series of Unfortunate Events: Season 1
I like food in television and for a long time have been finding inspiration in dishes I see in anime. Don’t think food anime, like Food Wars. Think of Sophie cooking bacon on Calcifer in Howl’s Moving Castle, Mugi’s tea time treats in K-On!, the pastries made by Kaori’s family in Your Lie in April, or the meal shared by Taki and Miki in Your name. Essentially, I like it when food is not the focus, but accentuates a scene or deepens a character or a relationship. While this is not anime, I had a lot of fun with it!
Having read the books more than a decade ago, I was surprised (possibly because I have forgotten) at how much food is in this series. From episode 1, I took semi-detailed notes on what dishes appeared in each part and made an attempt to also note down the scene in which it appeared. The following list does omit somethings because I felt they were not important (what the market sellers sold in the Wide Window – fish heads, limes, and something I can’t recall and didn’t write down). I may circle back at some point and double check the list, but I will definitely check it against the books when I reread them. If anyone thinks I forgot something critical – please let me know.
Enjoy!
Some side remarks:
If I made the recipe, I will mark it with an X.
If I have thoughts on recipes, I will include them. This might be rambling nonsense to some (most) of you.
Food in A Bad Beginning
Mint Jelly and Braised Leg of Lamb
Brought by Justice Strauss
Pasta Puttanesca [X]
Adding more anchovies did not really add more anchovy flavor. They are heavily masked with the kalamata olives and capers. Perhaps a milder olive?
Served to Count Olaf
Comes up serveral times in later episodes.
Raspberry Cupcakes
A raspberry swiss meringue butter cream would go really well here. To get extra fruit flavor in your icing you can add finely ground (and sifted) freeze dried fruit. Infused butter is another route.
Working raspberries into a sponge might be tricky as they are rather wet. Control moisture carefully.
Offered to the children by Count Olaf
Wedding Cake Slices with Vanilla, Nutmeg, or Lemon(y) buttercream
I believe Olaf picked the Vanilla flavored cake.
Spiced butter cream sounds delicious. Perhaps a spiced butter or a spiced tea butter?
Hook handed man asks Olaf for his opinion.
Food in The Reptile Room
Coconut Cream Cake
Never thought about a coconut cream cake. Not sure what the frosting would be. Sponge looks like yellow cake with coconut flakes.
Offered by Doctor Montgomery to the children.
Chinese Take out with pot stickers
Meal shared between the children, Doctor Montgomery, and Stefano.
Popcorn
Eaten by Stefano at the theater. Unclear if it was buttered or not.
Canned Peaches
Consumed by Hook Handed Man posing as a detective after murder.
Food in The Wide Window
Peppermint
Offered by Mr. Poe to the children
Vegetarian Chili [X]
Cab driver’s meal. I also believe the children made this when Josephine was out buying limes.
Chilled Cucumber soup
This actually looks really tasty despite the context and dreariness of the scene. Meal shared between Josephine and the children.
Lemon Meringue Pie
Meringues are tricky beasts. Italian meringues are stable, but be sure to get your sugar syrup to the soft ball point (~230 F). Also don’t dry your meringue too much.
Mentioned by Lemony and possibly carried by Larry.
Cold Lime Stew
I believe this was Josephine’s proposed hurricane meal.
Fried Egg Sandwich with toasted rye and a runny yolk
[X]
Date meal between Josephine and Captain Sham.
Extra Special Family Fun Appetizer
We never actually see this, but I propose bacon, french toast, crispier pancakes (fried in the bacon fat), and beneigts topped with maple syrup.
Described as a “bunch of fried things served with a sauce” by Larry (the clown).
Cheer Up Cheese Burgers
The pickles, mustard, and ketchup make a smiley on the burger. Offered by Larry (the clown).
Wasabi Mayo
I believe this is what Mr. Poe received as part of his brunch meal.
Fuzzy Navel
Captain Sham’s drink at brunch.
Banana
Josephine’s last meal.
Shredded Beef Tamales
Lard plays a role in making the dough.
Meal given to Ike by Count Olaf resulting in Ike’s death.
Chewing Gum
On the box in the truck carrying the children to Lucky Smells.
Food in The Miserable Mill
Clam Chowder
Consumed by Mr. Poe and distracts him for some time
Dense Beef Casserole
I don’t know what would make beef casserole dense. Too much flour? Incorrect cut of meat?
Served to workers at Lucky Smells.
Blue Berry pancakes and fresh orange juice [X]
How a good day can start according to Lemony
Must be served in bed by a butler, otherwise the day may not be quite as good.
Chewing Gum
Lunch at Lucky Smells
Goat Cheese and Beef Jerkey Omelette
This seems wrong. Jerky is rather tough and toughness is generally unbecoming of an omelette (we want soft to the palette but structured to the bite). Perhaps the Jerky was a side? Perhaps it was finely chopped? Perhaps Charles makes his own beef jerky less tough because he knows Sir likes it in omelettes?
Served to Sir by Charles
A fresh peach
Offered to the children by Charles
Cannoli
A mold can be fashioned out of copper piping. Cheaper and just as effective. Cut to appropriate length.
Don’t use foil
Poe’s punishment if he does not find the children
Cookies [X]
Looks like (store bought) short bread cookies.
Receptionist Shirley offers the children and Sir.

- Tah Chin-e Morgh (Golden crusted Saffron rice cake): This dish includes elements mainly used in the Iranian diet: rice, yogurt, saffron, egg, and entire baby lamb or chicken fillets.
- Ash-e Reshteh (Noodle and bean soup): this richly textured soup includes noodles, beans, herbs, and leafy greens like spinach and beet leaves. So it is a complete meal.
- Ghalieh Mahi: Southerners have sophistication in making delicious meals and Ghalieh
Mahi is an example of this claim. This yummy dish is a kind of spicy nutrient Khoresh made of mackerel fish, coriander and fenugreek, onion, pepper, turmeric, garlic, oil, and tomato paste. Tamarind and lots of spices are also added to make it an irresistible tasty dish.

MORAL ALIGNMENT: Lawful Good These characters have a strong moral character. Truth, honor, and the welfare of others is all-important. They are convinced that order and laws are absolutely necessary to assure that goodness prevails. Lawful good beings will not want to lie or cheat anyone, good or evil. They will not stand for treachery and will not let obviously dishonorable people use their own honor against them, if they can help it. They will obey the laws and customs of the area that they are in, but will attempt to find legal loopholes to disobey a law which is clearly evil or unjust. MBTI: ESFJ-A MBTI ROLE: The Consul (Assertive) Consuls love to be of service, enjoying any role that allows them to participate in a meaningful way, so long as they know that they are valued and appreciated. This is especially apparent at home, and Consuls make loyal and devoted partners and parents. Consul personalities respect hierarchy, and do their best to position themselves with some authority, at home and at work, which allows them to keep things clear, stable and organised for everyone. ENNEAGRAM: Type Two ENNEAGRAM ROLE: The Helper Twos are empathetic, sincere, and warm-hearted. They are friendly, generous, and self-sacrificing, but can also be sentimental, flattering, and people-pleasing. They are well-meaning and driven to be close to others, but can slip into doing things for others in order to be needed. They typically have problems with possessiveness and with acknowledging their own needs. At their Best: unselfish and altruistic, they have unconditional love for others. TEMPERAMENT: Choleric-Sanguine The Choleric-Sanguine combination is driven by two temperament needs. The primary need is to get results. The secondary need is to be accepted socially. Either need may dominate their behavior depending on the requirements of the situation. The Choleric and Sanguine natural tendencies combine to produce a result-oriented person who needs to be around people socially some of the time. This combination naturally likes being the leader and is often an executive. WESTERN ZODIAC: Libra People born under the sign of Libra are peaceful, fair, and they hate being alone. Partnership is very important for them, as their mirror and someone giving them the ability to be the mirror themselves. These individuals are fascinated by balance and symmetry, they are in a constant chase for justice and equality, realizing through life that the only thing that should be truly important to themselves in their own inner core of personality. This is someone ready to do nearly anything to avoid conflict, keeping the peace whenever possible CHINESE ZODIAC: Ox Oxen are the hard workers in the background, intelligent and reliable, but never demanding praise. Oxen are honest and earnest. They are low key and never look for praise or to be the center of attention. This often hides their talent, but they’ll gain recognition through their hard work. They will never surrender to fate and rarely think of choosing an alternative. This no doubt leads to a life of struggles. But no matter what, they will walk down the road they choose until the end. Despite this stubbornness, they think and react quickly. PRIMAL SIGN: Elephant Determined, romantic, and idealistic, those born under the sign of the Elephant are concerned with hard work, fairness, and intellectual pursuits. Like their animal namesake, members of this sign have strong bonds with family and close friends that overrides nearly every other concern. Generous, diplomatic, and (mostly) peaceful, Elephants guide their daily activities with a focus on the future as well as a work-hard / play-hard attitude. TAROT CARD: The Tower, The Chariot TV TROPES: Mama Bear Apron Matron Determinator Former Teen Rebel SONGS:  I Will, Mitski When the Day Met the Night, Panic! at the Disco Home, Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeroes Landslide, Fleetwood Mac All This and Heaven Too, Florence + The Machine Canyon Moon, Harry Styles
IDEOLOGIES: There’s no problem that can’t be solved over a home cooked meal. Not all acts of heroism are remarkable. All children are born with goodness inside them. It’s sometimes okay to put those you love over the greater good. Family is the most important thing.

Ethnobotnay, ethnogastronomy, and cultural importance of chicos del horno, the rare corn dish from the Indigenous-Hispano regional cuisine of the San Luis Valley (Colorado and New Mexico)
Excerpts here come from a paper by Devon Pena:
Chicos del horno: How Adobe Oven-roasted Corn Became a Local, Slow, and Deep Food (2010)
Tumblr media
The Upper Rio Grande watershed in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico can be considered to be among the northernmost extensions of this Mesoamerican “corn belt.” (...) Chicos del horno [is] a Southwest regional food prepared with adobe oven-roasted heirloom corn (...) This food is a highly threatened part of Southwestern Indo-Hispano cuisine. My own survey currently places the number of authentic producers of chicos del horno in Colorado at no more than one dozen, most located in Costilla County in the high altitude San Luis Valley. (...)
I have three objective in this paper: First, I present an abbreviated agricultural history of chicos del horno that includes discussion of the origins and ethnobotany of the maize varieties used in historic and contemporary production.
Second, I provide a detailed description of the labor process involved in producing chicos del horno. This includes a description of the contemporary agroecology involved in producing the heirloom corn and a description of the ethnogastronomy of the resulting dish - a recipe and other social and cultural aspects of the preparation and eating of chicos that qualifies it as a “deep” food.
Third, I conclude by situating the recent revival of this endangered regional food in the context of food sovereignty/justice movements in Colorado and New Mexico acequia communities.
-
Tumblr media
The preparation of the chicos for consumption is a relatively simple affair but involves a wide range of original family recipes and preferenes. The most popular recipe involve the preparation of a simple winter stew with four main ingredients -- the chicos, a whole onion, water, salt, and a meat, which traditionally involves elk, venison, or lamb (...) All of the recipes are usually flavored with chile caribe, which is itself another traditional preparation. (...)
In a forthcoming book, Joe C. Gallegos (...) offers this bit of wisdom about the deeper meanings of the work and ritual of making chicos del horno:
When chicos are being cooked, friends and neighbors appear out of the woodwork. When the morning arrives the most exciting time is about to happen, the opening of the mighty horno. The opening is the moment when we all find out how well the fruits of our labor turned out ... The corn is husked and the golden corn that is well-cooked tastes like smoky burnt and honey-kissed earth ... After husking and racking, then day winds down with an all-evening social event with friends ... Chico roasting has become a great excuse to have a party ... This is the social event of the year and is as important as the annual ditch meeting in February, the annual ditch cleaning in April, and the feast day of our patron saint, San Isidro, in May.
-
The origin of chicos del horno is not scientifically well documented but regional lore in northern New Mexico and south-central Colorado attributes the origin of the food to the ancestral Puebloan civilization and cliff-dwelling culture known by the Dine name, Anasazi (...) The ethnobotany of the white maize used to make chicos del horno is still a matter of research in-progress (...) The Upper Rio Grande Hispano Farms study (1995-99), which I directed (...) included what is likely the first scientific research on the white corn grown by acequia farmers in San Luis, Colorado. According to Santistevan (2003), the specific corn variety used to make chicos del horno (...) is known as maiz de concho. In this M.A. thesis, Sanistevan identifies the scientific name for this variety of white flint as Zea mays clibanus. This is a unique heirloom variety of white flint corn (...)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
More significantly, the process is not just an agricultural production task, it is a cherished and time-honored social event. The production of chicos del horno is usually a family or community affair and cannot proceed without a good amount of help. In 2008, a dozen youth from the Sembrando Semillas (Planting Seeds) project of the New Mexico Acequia Association, Las Comrades de San Luis, and the Aceuia Insitute, joined is in the harvest and prep work before the roasting. (...) The process engages the entire community in the production of our local heritage food ways and provides a means to mentor and educate local youth on the knowledge, skills, and virtues of slow foods.
-
(End of excerpts.)
Here’s a view of chicos del horno preparation from an unrelated essay at Sol Feliz Farm’s WordPress site:
Tumblr media
-
Here’s a lazy map I made of the Upper Rio Grande and San Luis Valley. The San Luis Valley is often considered to be the northernmost extent of Southwestern Native culture region; strong Hispano cultural influence; and Southwestern desert-steppe ecology in Colorado. It is a very dramatic valley, shielded on almost all sides by abrupt mountain ridges, which separate the valley from the rest of the Colorado Rockies and from the Great Plains to the east. It’s like a little oasis of Southwestern desert steppe, hidden in the mountains.

This is the first fic that I write in English, so if you see any type of error, do not hesitate to say it so that I can correct myself. I hope you like it ! Thanks for reading me.
April, 1636. Port Tortuga .
"Captain, Captain!" shouted someone on the other side of the door knocking hard on the wood. "We should be sailing in a couple of hours."
"Damn it, Breda, here's a man trying to sleep," he grunted in a bad mood.
Twenty minutes later and with his characteristic calm he left his cabin, adjusting his belt from which all his weapons hung, behind him two beautiful girls who laughed and whispered to each other. Their colourful dresses stood out from the sobriety of the rest of the crew. Roy said goodbye to the girls when they got off the boat and turned with a huge smile on his face to look at his team. His right hand was carefully checking the boxes on deck. She wore her long blond hair tied up in a messy bun and when she moved her bracelets and beads tinkled, making a soft sound of tiny bells. Her white shirt drew her curves and she seemed to shine under the sun of the southern seas.
"Petty Officer Swallow, how's the cargo going?" "All right, sir," she muttered without looking up from the papers.
"Is anything missing?" he insisted, smiling trying to get her to look at him.
"Yes, sir, a lot of things," she snorted in a bad mood giving the documents to the red-haired sailor who had woken him up.
"All right gentlemen, we've got work to do, let's go everybody," he said in a loud voice, gesturing exaggeratedly with his arms. "If we manage to load the boat, we will spend the night in Tortuga."
Queen Elizabeth was rocking in the calm waters of the free port of Tortuga. It wasn't a very big ship. It was barely twelve meters long and was old; it had hundreds of repairs, but it was fast and was good for smuggling and pillaging, which in the end was the most important thing. A bunch of children, the street rats of the island were loading the illegal rum onto the ship. For a handful of coins, anyone was willing to work no matter how hard it was. Captain Mustang, hands on his waist, gazed proudly at his beloved ship.
"Isn't it a bit brazen of you to name your ship after a queen whom you plunder every chance you get?" said a voice full of arrogance behind Roy.
"I am the captain of the ship and give it whatever name I want," he replied irritably as he recognized that voice.
"Be thankful that you are in Tortuga, otherwise I would stop you right now for insulting the crown, Captain Mustang."
"You should be thankful that you are in Tortuga, otherwise I would put my sword through you right now, Commodore Fox."
"Has this stupid egos fight ended, Sir? We still have to finish loading the ship," Riza snorted as she stood beside him as she guided one of the children down the catwalk.
"Yes, petty officer" he turned to look at her, smiling, but she didn't smile back.
He snorted in annoyance and last looked at the stupid officer of the royal army who kept smiling arrogantly as he walked away from the port.
It was noon and Mustang, along with several members of his crew, was on his way to "Sweet Kattalin", one of the port's canteens. It was always crowded, since they have the best lamb stew on this side of the ocean. They sat at one of the tables, starving to death, shouting at the waitresses, acting as if they were in their own house.
"Get your dirty boots off my table, Mustang," the owner of the place grunted." Did you grow up in a pigsty?"
"Catalina, my love" interrupted Havok, taking her by the waist."I missed you tonight."
"You just miss something to put your hands on, you scoundrel, water rat," she snorted away from him. "Wipe that rogue smile off your face, pirate, I'm not going to fall for your cheap tricks."
"That's why I like you so much, Catalina, that mouth of yours..." he smiled brazenly and threw a kiss as he sat on the bench.
The owner of the place was a brunette with wild and curly hair, generous curves and ravishing smile, any man would fight in mourning for looking at her cleavage. She was cynical and foul-mouthed, and capable of putting up a good fight. He liked her, but above all she was a good friend of his petty officer. Catalina had a strange hobby; she collected "wanted" posters of all the villains, delinquents and other thugs who walked through Tortuga. Decorated the walls of the canteen and every time someone was on the wall for the first time, they had to pay for everyone's drinks.
"Why am I"Baby face Mustang"?" he asked looking at his poster whit a sulking sign. " It's stupid."
"Because you are incapable of growing a decent beard, sir," Breda joked, unbuttoning his pants, ready to have a great feast.
"Why is Havoc" Pretty face, Havoc?" Roy insisted, folding his arms across his chest.
"Because I have it, boss," he replied, scratching his blonde beard.
After the delicious food and paying for the part of the sailors who had stayed on the ship, they returned to port. There they spent the afternoon finalizing the preparations for departure, delaying until the next morning the time to go to sea. When night fell, and this time with all his crew, they left Queen Elizabeth to enjoy the crazy nights of Tortuga. Walking through its crowded streets where all kinds of crooks and bad people gathered.
"I have things to do," said Riza disappearing into one of the dark alleys without giving him time to say anything. A tall sailor, with black hair tied up in a ponytail and ears full of earrings, stood beside him and cleared his throat in an exaggerated manner.
"May I speak freely, Captain?" he asked mockingly.
"Hughes, please, put the formalities in your ass..."he said, circling his eyes, but without taking his sight away from the alley through which she vanished.
"What have you done now?"
"I haven't done anything," he turned his head to look at his friend.
"I don't think our beloved boatswain thinks so," Maes smiled and softly elbowed his ribs.
"She wants to go by the Arrow, but we are unready to go after Bradley," he explained shaking his head.
"You always say the same thing... What's your excuse now?"
"A small ship, inexperienced crew, she and I grew up on a pirate ship, but now half of the boys are inexperienced criminals or fishermen bored of working, dry feet, immature... They are unprepared for such a business..."
"Then you'll find another excuse. I know you do it by the map, Roy, I'm not an idiot, nor is she, she's not a lady in distress, she's a pirate. Besides Elisabeth Hawkeye is dead to everyone, nobody is looking for her."
"I will not risk her life for a stupid ship or a stupid treasure."
"Which are important to her, are her inheritance, her legacy and you are denying her the right to claim them."
"Whose side are you on, Maes?"
"On the side of justice, adventure and greed my dear say there are more than ten thousand gold coins in Hawkeye Treasure and precious stones the size of your head."
"They also say he had a daughter with a mermaid..."
"Who knows? Riza is the best swimmer in the crew."
"Shut up, Hughes, lets drink before those river rats end up with all the rum."
And they drank to the point of exhaustion.
He was drunk, very drunk, like the rest of his men crawling around the ship, he wasn't sure how he got there. Riza threw him on the bed. He extended his arms, trying to look as seductive as possible, without achieving it at all, Riza muttered something between her teeth and leaned on the bed to be able to remove his boots. Then she grabbed him by the flaps of his jacket to incorporate him.
"I like you to undress me," he whispered as she took off his jacket and threw it to the floor.
"Well, I hate it when you're this drunk," she said, pulling his belt from which hunged a musket, foil and a dagger.
"I love you so much," he whispered, running one hand around her waist so that she would sit next to him.
"I know..." she answered, unlacing the handkerchief on his head.
"Are you still mad at me?" he asked, holding her face in his hand.
"Yes," she answered in a whisper letting the heat of his hand warm her cheek.
"You know, this morning's girls were Cats, they fought with Mama and needed a place to spend the night... they were not... they... I actually slept on that couch over there " he reluctantly pointed to a leather armchair.
"I know, I was myself a Midnight Mama's girl once, I can recognize my own sisters," she smiled unbuttoning his shirt, taking her time to enjoy the touch of his skin.
"I just wanted to make you jealous."
"I know that too..." carefully caressed his scarred chest and smiled sweetly.
"It didn't work, did it?" He asked with a small drop of hope in his voice.
"No," she replied, nodding her head solemnly, causing a necklace to come out of her chest.
Roy smiled as he saw the little heart hanging from her neck and touched it with his fingers.
"Sleep with me," he begged, playing with the little piece of gold between his fingers.
"No, I'm still angry," she replied, moving away from him.
"Are you going to abandon your captain in this pitiful state?"
"Yes," she smiled, leaning over him and kissing his lips. " I don't sleep with drunken men."
"I know... Unless you're drunk too," he got up with agility, despite his terrible drunkenness and grabbed her by the butt, smiling like a fool. Riza also smiled, kissed him and quickly pulled away, leaving his beloved captain seated, eyes closed, waiting for another kiss.
"It's bedtime, Captain Mustang," she replied, pushing him onto the bed again, trying to look serious.
"I love you."
"You already told me that."

China Itinerary: How to Spend 2 Weeks in China
When planning a trip to China, there are probably a handful of destinations you’re dying to check off your bucket list in just 2 weeks in China. Maybe you want to explore the colorful Buddhist temples, lotus-filled ponds, and adorable baby pandas chewing on bamboo stalks. Or perhaps you imagine walking through the bustling metropolis of towering skyscrapers and modern high rises.
Or maybe you simply crave the aromatic taste of traditional Chinese foods like pan-fried dumplings and crispy Peking duck.
And the truth is, you can do all these things with just 2 weeks in China. Although two weeks will barely scratch the surface, there is still so much to do. As one of the oldest and fasting growing civilizations in the world, China is teeming with adventures for every type of traveler.
Tumblr media
Due to the recent coronavirus outbreak in China, we at TravelFreak do not recommend traveling to China at this time. The U.S. Department of State has issued a statement warning against all travel to Hubei Province and restricting travel elsewhere in China.
Tumblr media
How to Get Around China
Generally speaking, air travel is the fastest way to get around the country. Because cities and distances can be far apart, you can save a lot of time and energy by flying. The only downside is that domestic flights can be expensive, especially if booked last minute.
And while domestic flights can be faster and more convenient, traveling by bullet train is another popular method of transportation in China. Bullet trains usually run between most major tourist cities and provide a fast, comfortable way to travel long distances.
If you’re on a budget, traveling by standard railway is a cost-efficient way to go. However, local trains are often uncomfortable and extremely slow. The journey takes twice as long compared to bullet trains, which means you could be stuck in the same seat for over 24 hours.
Tickets for both types of trains can be booked the day of, but since they can quickly sell out, it’s recommended to purchase seats 20-30 days in advance.
The cheapest and most common transportation method is by bus. However, taking the bus is only practical if you are traveling to a city that’s not served by an airport or train station. Poor road conditions and unbearable traffic can make the bus journey extremely stressful.
A Sleeper bus is also available for long distance China trips, but bed space is often narrow and crowded. And while most bus coaches have bathrooms on-board, we can’t attest that they’ll be clean or even in service.
For a wide selection of train, bus and flight tickets during your China itinerary, we recommend booking directly with 12go.asia.
China Itinerary: See the Best of China in 2 Weeks
With 22 different provinces and dozens of beautiful cities, China is one of the largest countries in the world. And even if you plan an action-packed China trip, a few days in China simply won’t do it justice.
But as a first (or second) time visitor, 2 weeks in China is a reasonable amount of time to get an overview of the entire country. And if you have more time to spare, you can always stay a few days longer in each city to gain a richer understanding of the area. It’s more rewarding to spend your trip soaking in the culture rather than seeing it from the inside of a bus or plane!
Day 1 – 4: Visit Historical and Cultural Landmarks in Beijing
Tumblr media
The Great Wall, Mutianyu, Beijing, China
China’s capital is a bustling city overflowing with 3,000 years of culture and history. Home to some of China’s most iconic landmarks, Beijing is slowly revolutionizing itself to become an international world leader.
And around every corner, you can see how Beijing manages to blend both ancient histories with modern culture together.
Climb the Great Wall of China
No trip to the capital city would be complete without trekking the Great Wall of China, one of the seven wonders of the world. Winding through 5,500 miles of rugged mountains, the Great Wall of China is a rare glimpse into one of China’s most fascinating pieces of architecture.
A word of advice: Skip the Badaling section and head straight for Mutianyu or Jinshanling. While these spots are further away, they’re more authentic and way less crowded than the commercial, tourist trap of Badaling. That’s why you should definitely go during your China itinerary.
Explore the Forbidden City
The Forbidden City was once home to ruling Imperial emperors of both the Ming and Qing Dynasties. And although you won’t find any royal families wandering around today, the Forbidden City remains the largest palace complex in the entire world.
But with over 900 buildings and almost 9,000 individual rooms, you can’t explore everything within the Forbidden City. However, you shouldn’t miss a tour of the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the Palace of Heavenly Purity, and the Imperial Gardens.
If you’re not entirely exhausted, we recommend a short walk up to the neighboring Jingshan Park. From the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views over the Forbidden City.
Relax at the Summer Palace
The Summer Palace is a beautiful park and easy day trip getaway from the bustle and congestion of the city. Built as a summer escape for the Imperial family, this park boasts a variety of Buddhist temples, landscape gardens and tree-lined lakes.
The park grounds are centered around Kunming Lake, the perfect destination for a picnic lunch or relaxing boat ride. Make sure to tour Longevity Hill, a scenic viewpoint with colorful pavilions and grand halls.
Where to Stay in Beijing
Although the capital is one of the more expensive places to stay in China, you can still find accommodation for every type of budget during your China itinerary.
Just like in most major cities, there are large, international chains in Beijing. These places have amenities such as swimming pools, restaurants with western breakfast and business centers.
But if you’re looking to step outside your comfort zone, you can spend a few days in one of the traditional hutongs. Hutongs are one-story residential buildings have been converted to inns. For an authentic, Beijing experience, hutongs are a unique accommodation experience right in the city.
Luxury Hotels: Hotel Eclat Beijing , Legendale Hotel Wangfujing Beijing , Shangri-La Hotel Beijing , InterContinental Beijing Sanlitun
Boutique Hotels: Beijing Pudi Hotel , Beijing Double Happiness Hotel , Michael’s House Beijing , Sofu Hotel
Mid-Range Hotels: Ming Courtyard , Jade Hotel , Capital Hotel , Kelly’s Courtyard Hotel
Hostels: Peking International Youth Hostel , Chinese Box Courtyard Hostel , The Great Wall Box House , Leo Hostel
How to Get from Beijing to Xi’an
The easiest (and most comfortable) way to reach Xi’an from Beijing is by bullet train. The train leaves from Beijing West Station and takes only 4.5 – 6 hours in total. Speeding through the country at 186 mph, you’ll have the opportunity to see other picturesque villages like Zhengzhou, Luoyang and Huashan from your window.
Taking a two-hour flight from Beijing to Xi’an is also possible. But with the check-in and security, it ends up taking the same amount of time as the high-speed train.
If you’re on a budget, then taking the sleeper train to Xi’an is a great option. You can choose between shared bunks or a separate compartment throughout your China itinerary. But best of all, you’ll save the cost accommodation when opting for this 12-hour train ride!
Check out routes and prices using the form below.
Day 4 – 6: Explore the Imperial Capital of Xi’an
Tumblr media
On the famous Xi’an wall in China
Few places in China are as culturally diverse as Xi’an. As the starting point on the Silk Road, Xi’an became an influential city home to emperors, warriors, merchants, and artists. But besides the Silk Road, most of the city’s history can be seen through its distinct architecture, making Xi’an a must stop destination in China for a few days.
Admire the Terracotta Warriors
When in Xi’an, you must tour the tomb of the terracotta warriors. Over 8,000 life-size soldiers and horses were buried more than 2,000 decades ago to protect Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China, in the afterlife.
And while there are still thousands of soldiers left to excavate, the terracotta army is a rare journey into the world of Ancient China.
What’s more impressive is each warrior has a different face. The level of detail on the armor, footwear, hairstyles and facial expressions is nothing short of remarkable. No two soldiers are the same, which you’ll see during your China itinerary tour!
Eat Your Heart Out in the Muslim Quarter
Although there’s no shortage of mouth-watering snacks in China, Xi’an’s Muslim Quarter is a food lover’s paradise. The sheer number of snack food stalls along the silk road can be overwhelming at first.
Here, you can find everything from beef skewers, dumplings, noodle bowls, spicy sandwiches, and local pastries. Try the Yangrou Paomo, a typical Xi’an stew made from lamb and served steaming hot with chunks of unleavened bread.
And while you’ll have an endless supply of traditional Xi’an foods at your fingertips, don’t expect any pork. After all, you are in a Muslim neighborhood!
Cycle Along the Ancient City Wall
For some of the best, panoramic views of Xi’an, stand atop the imperial 40-foot city walls that surround the city center. Built-in 1370 as a defense fortification system, the city walls were also constructed with a moat, drawbridges, steel gates and watchtowers.
Walking along the city wall is possible, but the best way to get around with a bike tour. It takes roughly two hours to cycle the perimeter of the city. Your reward: sweeping views of both modern day and ancient Xi-an from every angle.
Conquer Mt. Huashan
You won’t read about this in your travel guide! If you want to check a dangerous albeit thrilling adventure off your bucket list during your China itinerary, then hike Mt. Huashan, one of China’s most treacherous mountains. Located a few hours outside Xi’an, Mt. Huashan is famous for breathtaking views, granite peaks, and of course, it’s adrenaline-filled plank walk.
With only a thin harness chaining you to safety, you can scale the side of the 2,000-foot cliff by shuffling across a 1-foot wide, wooden plank. And while we can’t guarantee you won’t have a panic attack, we can vouch for the exceptional scenic views.
Where to Stay in Xi’an
Hotels in Xi’an are more affordable than other big cities in China, such as Beijing or Shanghai. For this reason, you should have no problem finding a clean, decent place to stay for a few days.
For first time visitors to this silk road city, consider staying within the city walls. Not only are you within walking distance to most major attractions, but you can also easily take a public bus to the terracotta warriors or other outlying neighborhoods.
And when it comes to different types of accommodation, Xi’an is home to a wide variety of hostels, hotels, and luxury resorts for every budget.
Luxury Hotels: Sofitel Legend People’s Grand Hotel Xi’an , Shangri-la Hotel Xi’an , Gran Melia Xi’an Hotel
Boutique Hotels: Eastern House Boutique Hotel , Xi’an 52 Hezi Hotel , Time Tunnel Designer Hotel , Simple Palace
Mid-Range Hotels: Grand Park Xi’an , CitiGO Hotel Gaoxin Xi’an , Ramada by Wyndham Xi’an Bell Tower , Xi’an Grand Soluxe International Hotel
Hostels: Xi’an 7 Sages Belltower Boutique Youth Hostel , Han Tang Inn Hostel , Han Tang House , Shuyuan International Party Hostel
How to Get from Xi’an to Guilin
For transport, you have two realistic options to get from Xi’an to Guilin. The fastest way is to take a two-hour flight south to Guilin Liangjiang International Airport, which is roughly 20 miles outside the city center. If you’re short on time, then flying from Xi’an is the best option.
The other, more time-consuming option is to take a bullet train. It runs only during the day and takes around 11 hours to reach the city.
Check out your options using the form below.
Day 6 – 8: Be One With Nature in Guilin
Tumblr media
If you want to tour rolling hills, steep mountains, and tranquil lakes, then make sure to add this ancient city in the south to your China itinerary. Famous for its dramatic landscapes, Guilin is lightyears away from the hectic crowds of China’s bigger cities. It’s the perfect place to relax and explore China’s scenic and breathtaking countryside.
Admire the Buddhist Sun and Moon Pagodas
Situated in the heart of this spectacular city are the two Buddhist Sun and Moon Pagodas. The Sun Pagoda is built from copper and glows a bright, warm gold when illuminated at night. The smaller but equally impressive Moon Pagoda is made from marble and shines a bright white color.
The two Buddhist pagodas are connected by an underground tunnel that runs under Shan Lake. Although you can ride to the top of the pagodas, the best view is from the banks of the lake at night! This is a must-do tour to add to your China itinerary.
Be Dazzled Inside Reed Flute Cave
The Reed Flute Cave is one of China’s most spectacular natural phenomenons. As you take a tour underground, you’ll uncover dark caverns and rugged limestone formations that have existed over the last 180 million years!
But most impressively, the giant stalactites and stalagmites are illuminated by thousands of colorful, neon lights. This sparkling attraction brings the cave to life, and shows the beauty of the natural formations from a unique perspective!
Walk Along the Longsheng Rice Terraces
Cascading down the sides of sloping hills, the bright green, terraced rice paddies are one of Guilin’s natural gems. And with miles of tiered terraces, you’ll understand why people often refer to it as the country’s Dragon’s Backbone.
To fully explore everything the Longsheng Rice Terraces has to offer, consider taking a tour from Dazhai to Ping’an (or vice versa). It takes around 4 or 5 hours and winds you through the rice paddies and small, rural villages.
It’s important to note that the terraces are several hours outside the city center, so be prepared to take a full day trip.
Where to Stay in Guilin
Most of the attractions are outside the city, and you can easily find somewhere away from the hustle and bustle. However, staying in the city puts you in the center of restaurants and bars. Either way, try and snag a room with a view of the natural surroundings!
There are also plenty of international and western brand chains. And while these options are more expensive than smaller, local hotels, the price is still affordable compared to other cities in this China itinerary.
Luxury Hotels: The Wing Hotel Guilin , Guilin Bravo Hotel , Sheraton Guilin Hotel, The White House Hotel Guilin
Boutique Hotels: Joli Vue Boutique Hotel Guilin , Aroma Tea House , Sky Garden Inn , Elephant Truck Hill Hotel
Mid-Range Hotels: Lijiang Waterfall Hotel , Guilin Bravo Hotel Grand Wing , Guilin Lakeside Inn , Guilin Oasis Inn
Hostels: Guilin Central Wada Hostel , Sky Palace Hostel , This Old Place International Youth Hostel, Ming Palace International Hostel
How to Get from Guilin to Yangshuo
Due to their close proximity, you’ll have a variety of options to get to Yangshuo. A private car or taxi may be the most expensive option, but it can get you door to door in under 90 minutes.
A public bus can also shuttle you between both cities. The bus ride also takes under 90 minutes, and leave from the airport, bus station, or railway station.
However, we recommend taking the bullet train from to Yangshuo for this China itinerary. It’s roughly the same price as the bus and gets you into Yangshuo in just 25 minutes. Keep in mind that the train station is 20 miles outside the city center, which means you’ll have to take a taxi to your hotel.
Day 8 – 10: Soak in the Countryside in Yangshuo
Tumblr media
This small and charming town will be one of the most beautiful spots on your itinerary. But despite its rural location, it’s remained a popular tourist destination for visitors since the 80’s.
And although you’ll find plenty of international and western places in the city center, you come to Yangshuo for the scenic countryside. It’s the perfect jumping off point on this itinerary for exploring the natural beauty of China’s landscape.
Explore West Street
Yangshuo’s oldest road is also its most famous. Paved with cobblestones and mixing both western and Qing Dynasty architecture, West Street is a lively hub for tourists and locals alike. It’s a buzzing oasis right in the middle of the Chinese countryside!
And, it’s is also home to Yangshuo’s large backpacking community. There are plenty of hostels, western restaurants, and karaoke bars to keep you entertained for several days. And for those looking to spend the night dancing, drinking, and listening to live music, this bustling district has you covered.
Bamboo Raft down the Li River
Hop aboard a private bamboo raft and tour the spectacular Li River. You can stop by different villages, dine at river-side cafes, or relax with a book to read while you soak in your surroundings. But despite the name, these bamboo rafts are made from plastic piping, which makes for a faster (and safer) ride.
The landscape is nothing short of breathtaking as your boat glides seamlessly through the river and the rugged, limestone cliffs. And with only the sound of the humming engine to distract you, you just might find a bit of tranquility and peace on a day trip down the Li River.
Climb to the Top of Moon Hill
This unusual rock formation is named after the giant moon-shaped hole carved into the arch of the cave. As you stand below it, you can marvel at the jagged stalactites that protrude down from the arch. Rock climbing is also a popular sport at Moon Hill, with over 14 distinct climbing routes available.
And for a closer view of the arch, you can ascend the 1,000 marble steps towards the top. But if you’re eager to catch a glimpse of the entire valley, you can continue the climb to the summit for the best sweeping views.
Where to Stay in Yangshuo
If you choose to spend a few days in the city center, you’ll find many hostels and hotels on the busy West Street. Since Yangshuo is a popular backpacker destination, you should have no problem finding a clean and reasonably priced dorm bed for a few days.
On the other hand, staying in one of the neighboring villages can offer a unique experience. Many resorts or inns provide a peaceful, countryside retreat away from the crowds.
Luxury Hotels: Yangshuo Li River Resort , Yangshuo Mountain Retreat , Yangshuo Hidden Dragon Villa Hotel , VISION Hotel
Boutique Hotels: Yangshuo C Source West Street Residence , Amari Yangshuo , Yangshuo Mountain Nest Boutique Hotel , Humble Inn Boutique Residence
Mid-Range Hotels: West Street Hotel , Bamboo House Resort , Guifu Holiday Hotel , Yangshuo Moondance Hotel
Hostels: En Attendant Godot Youth Hostel , The Hidden House , Yangshuo Sudder Street Guesthouse , Mountain Stream
How to Get from Yangshuo to Shanghai
While there are several ways to get from Yangshuo to Shanghai, we strongly recommend taking a bullet train or plane. The main bullet train leaves from Guilin Railway Station and takes between eight and nine hours, while the flight is around two hours.
Although a standard train might save you a few bucks, it can take upwards of 25 hours, which can be a nightmare journey if you can’t snag a sleeper bed!
Day 10 – 14: Be Dazzled by the Metropolitan Skyline of Shanghai
Tumblr media
In the south, Shanghai is an urban oasis, teeming with neon lights, skyscrapers, and enough entertainment to satisfy every taste. Here, the architecture is diverse, the shopping is plentiful, and the cuisine is served fresh and piping hot.
And while it feels more like glamorous and western than most places in China, Shanghai is still a buzzing cultural hot spot. Fusing ancient traditions with modern ideas, Shanghai is the perfect destination to end your journey in China.
Stroll Along the Bund
Walking on Shanghai’s waterfront boulevard boasts some of the best views of the city. Situated south from cosmopolitan high-rises of Pudong, the Bund is the perfect place for a leisurely stroll. Not to mention, it’s also one of the best sites for people watching!
Filled with performers, tai-chi enthusiasts, and photographers, the Bund is lively at all hours of the day.
And when the sun goes down, the neon skyscrapers reflect off the Huangpu River and illuminate the night sky. Taking an evening dinner cruise is one of the best ways to experience the sparkling magic of Shanghai’s skyline.
Spend an Evening in Tianzifang
Tianzifang is a charming art district teeming with designer pop-up shops, hidden cafes and trendy restaurants. As you navigate through the labyrinth of narrow alleys and stone-framed houses, you’ll stumble across some of the coolest shops in Shanghai.
At night, students, trendsetters, and tourists flood the roads looking for cocktails, snacks, and fun times in general. Because of it’s cozy, quaint atmosphere, you’ll forget you’re even in Shanghai!
Shop on Nanjing Lu
The blazing lights of Shanghai’s most prominent shopping district can be, to put it simply, overwhelming. Luxury department stores, knock-off markets, textile shops and malls line this crowded pedestrianized area. Nevertheless, it’s an exciting and authentic Shanghainese experience that you can’t keep away from.
Nanjing Lu is a shopper’s oasis and stretches south from the Bund all the way to People’s Square. But even if you’re not into shopping, you can still enjoy the boisterous and chaotic atmosphere!
Slurp Some Xiaolongbao
Commonly known to most people as a soup dumpling, xiaolongbao is a traditional Shanghainese snack that can be found almost everywhere in the city. These cooks stuff succulent dumplings with ground pork, green onion, and ginger before folding them (with precisely 18 creases) and steaming them in a bamboo basket.
The most popular restaurant is Nanxiang, which is located in YuYuan Gardens. While it can be jam-packed (and touristy), they’ve been making xiaolongbao for over 100 years, so you know you’re getting the good stuff! You can’t miss this place during your 2 weeks in China.
Where to Stay in Shanghai
As China’s largest city, Shanghai has a large variety of hostels and hotels to choose from. You can find chic boutiques in the French Concession, opulent resorts on the bund and even dorm rooms tucked away down an alley.
While you can score good deals on rooms, the average cost of a hotel in Shanghai can be high.
Luxury Hotels: Shanghai Mariott Hotel City Center , Sofitel Shanghai Hyland , Radisson Blu Hotel Shanghai New World , Le Royal Meridien Shanghai
Boutique Hotels: The Yangtze Boutique Shanghai , SSAW Boutique Hotel Shanghai Bund , Les Suites Orient , Shanghai Chi Chen Boutique Hotel
Mid-Range Hotels: Shanghai Fish Inn East Nanjing Road , Riverview Hotel on the Bund , Majesty Plaza Shanghai , City Hotel Shanghai
Hostels: Shanghai Blue Mountain Bund Youth Hostel , Shanghai Meego Yes Hotel , Rock&Wood International Youth Hostel, Mingtown Etour International Youth Hostel
Ending Your Trip in Shanghai
Sadly, all great vacations must come to an end. And after two exhilarating weeks in China, it’s time to head back through one of Shanghai’s two international airports.
Remember to give yourself enough time to check in luggage and get through customs at the airport. Lines tend be longer compared to other airports, and can take upwards of two hours.
But as your plane soars past the city lights of Shanghai and over the Pacific Ocean, you’ll have plenty of incredible memories to take back home with you.
How Much Will 2 Weeks in China Cost?
The cost of your trip to China doesn’t necessarily depend on where you travel, but how you travel.
The Cost of Transportation in China
Getting to and around China is likely to be your biggest expense. Depending on where you’re traveling from, international flights into Beijing or other major cities can cost around $600 to $1,500 per seat.
Once you’re in the country, you’ll have a variety of options to travel from city to city. Domestic flights can save time and energy, but they will almost always cost more than ground transportation. On the other hand, trains are much more affordable (especially the slower, regional trains) and can be nicer than other ground travel options for your 2 weeks in China.
Taxis are also relatively cheap, even in big cities like Beijing and Shanghai. But most places are well connected by subway, which is affordable and surprisingly easy to navigate.
The Cost of Accommodation in China
Accommodation costs vary greatly depending on the type of place you are staying. Luxury hotels can cost almost as much as they do in western countries but come with all the comforts that you’d expect.
If you’re on a budget, you’ll find plenty of mid-range hotels in every city for your trip to China. These can cost anywhere from $30 to $100 a night and are usually reasonably spacious and clean.
Hostels are a popular choice if you want to spend the least amount for accommodation. In big cities, you can find shared dorm rooms for around $20, while smaller towns can be as low as $10 a night.
The Cost of Food and Drinks in China
Everyone around the world knows China for its cuisine, and you can find a range of restaurants when traveling through the country.
Snack food is delicious, cheap, and can be found on almost every corner. From dumplings to meat skewers to pancakes, these snacks are a great way to sample the local culture while also sticking to a budget. Best of all, it will only cost you a few bucks!
Keep in mind that international or western restaurants will almost always cost more than Chinese restaurants. The only exceptions are Chinese delicacies like Peking duck, shark fin soup, and other luxury seafood dishes.
Travel Insurance in China
Travel insurance is one of the most important, if not the most critical thing to have on your China itinerary. Whether you come down with a bad case of food poisoning or break your leg in a scooter accident or during another activity in China itinerary, you’ll be glad to have travel insurance.
Not only does travel insurance in China cover the cost of your medical treatments, but it also protects you against other incidents that might occur.
Your $800 iPhone that some thief swiped from your pocket on the train? Or that thunderstorm that canceled your flight to Beijing? Travel insurance covers both of those situations, too.
The last thing you want is to have thousands of dollars in medical bills or pay for your lost or stolen goods straight out of pocket. And since it only costs a fraction of your total trip, there’s no excuse to travel without it.
There are plenty of travel insurance companies to choose from, but some policies and benefits are better than others. We recommend World Nomads, the leading travel insurance for all types of backpackers and travelers.

Final Thoughts
China is brimming activities for every type of traveler. From the great outdoors to the Great Wall, you can spend a memorable 2 weeks in China.
This China itinerary highlights the main attractions for a two-week trip, but you should feel free to make it your own! Take that last-minute trip to the neighboring village for a few days, explore the back alleys of the city and get off the beaten path. You never know what awaits you around every corner.
Because really, there’s no right or wrong way to see China.

Oh My General episode 12 recap
Tumblr media
The emperor welcomes Eno (I believe that's the foreign prince's name) to the banquet. He tells the Emperor that he'll give a martial arts performance. Everyone is nervous because Eno comes quite close to the emperor with his weapon, but everyone manages to keep calm despite of it.
After the whole episode, Eno approaches Ye Zhao to give her toast, but Jin says he'll accept the toast on her behalf. (In the previous episode, Jin said that he doesn't want her to drink too much as she gets 'handsy' when she's drunk and thus cause him to lose face in front of the whole court! lol)
The two men exchange little barbs at each other while Ye Zhao watches on. Maybe because he had his manhood slighted by Eno, Jin asks Eno to have more drinks with him, saying it's tradition to have more than one. (As if!) The two exchange further barbs, which makes a minister quite nervous. Said minister comes over to douse some cold water over the heated exchange, saying that Prince Jin sure loves to crack jokes! He drags Eno away for a toast. Ye Zhao however was rather amused by it all (maybe cos Jin is being assertive). Prince Jin preens a little when Ye Zhao praises him, saying that he did really well.
Jin then tells YZ that he senses that Eno is a dangerous fellow, to which she replies: I trust your evaluation. (I'm sure she knows that though?) Jin tells her it's instinct. There's this cute scene where Jin stops YZ from drinking, only to drink himself, and she slyly sneaks in a drink.
Back home, Jin is totally passed out from all that liquor, however, and YZ can't help but take that opportunity to be "close" to her hubby. Hah! She's handsy even when she's not drunk - but can you blame her, really? And I think that conversation with Eno must have affected Jin a little bit more that he let on because he sits up in the middle of his sleep and declares, "I am a man! I demand to be on top!"
Poor dear.
YZ tells him, "Yes, yes, you're on top. Come, hold on to me." YZ is of course, totally taking advantage of it all, though Jin spoils it a wee bit by talking about a courtesan next and makes kissy faces.
Tumblr media
Jin wakes up the next day without his clothes, with YZ at his side with some medicinal soup. Jin demands to know if she did anything to him. She says innocently, "Do I look like that kind of person?"
YZ is summoned for some court business, and when she leaves, Jin comments to himself: "I feel like a woman that has been ravished!" (I burst out laughing at this. Gawd.)
Jin is suspicious when one of the concubines hinted that he must have had a good night with YZ. He summons his manservant (I forgot his name) and demands to know what happened. The manservant tells him that he was really, really drunk last night and was vomiting and all, and YZ took care of him the whole night. Jin asks worriedly: "Did she do something outrageous to me?" (Actually he used the idiom, do something to "offend Heaven and reason", which I thought was doubly funny.) Cue the manservant's gobsmacked expression, to which Jin quickly says, "I mean, did I do anything untoward to her?" Manservant reassures him that he did not.
Jin's trio of good-for-nothing friends are amused to see him working out with weights later. They invite him to the go the pleasure house. There, Jin finds out to his annoyance that YZ is with Eno. He goes down to confront them and ends up listening to Eno belittling him.
"Tell me what are his good qualities? Perhaps I can learn." Eno demands.
YZ cuttingly says that he cannot "learn" Jin's good qualities.
Eno goes on to say that he heard that Jin is a man that hasn't done a day of honest/productive labour in his life and is stubborn and stupid by nature. He goes further to say that Jin must be a cute, adorable and obedient sheep at home. And why not? After all, YZ is a general.
YZ fiercely says: "No, he's not a sheep. He's an eagle."
Eno laughs out loud.  "An eagle? A cute eagle then!"
YZ scowls a little, saying that he may be a young eagle with down instead of feathers now, but he will soar to be a great man in the future. He is very smart, he never forgets what he reads from books. He's kind; although he has a high position, he will defend the poor who are bullied. He cares about the people around him, protecting them under his banner (not very sure about this part), he is chivalrous - he's not afraid of how powerful his opponent is. He is so positive a person - although he is often ill since childhood, has hovered between life and death, he has never given up - he has always been able to rise after a setback.
Tumblr media
Jin is actually moved to tears by YZ's words about him. "Everyone thinks I'm a good-for-nothing bastard and a dandy, and yet she sees the potential in me. She believes I will soar."
(Sniff. Like Jin, I'm really moved by this scene too. I think this is when Jin sees his wife in a new light, don't you think?)
Jin goes to Master Lin’s  house to demand YZ's dagger back. (I think I must have missed something in the last few episodes. Jin must have replaced YZ's dagger with a fake one.) Lin wants his money but Jin grabs the knife from him - none too gently too. Lin ends up on the floor.
Jin goes to YZ's room and gives her the dagger and a new dress, telling her that he'll design her clothes in the future. (A fashion designer husband. I want one.)
[[I'm a little unsure about the dagger biz; I originally thought that Lin master made a fake one for Jin to replace YZ's real dagger, but I need to rewatch the earlier episodes carefully to be sure - anyone care to fill in the gaps?]
The next day, our couple gets a shock when they're told that Master Lin has been found dead. The onlookers point to Jin, saying that they saw him arguing with the dead man last night. Jin and YZ  are summoned to the palace to explain themselves.
Thoughts
A funny episode, but also a revealing one. We see Jin’s pain beneath his playboy, flamboyant exterior. He’s gotten so used to people thinking the worst of him that he was very taken aback when YZ said such wonderful things about him. And YZ is right, of course.
One quality I love about Prince Jin is how he mingles with the ordinary folk, and how he went out of his way to seek justice for the son of the restaurant owner (he eats lamb stew/soup there often). He didn’t have to, but he did it anyway.
He’s also more intelligent than he lets on, like how he demonstrated with his skill with the dice in earlier episodes. (Jin, in order to seek justice for the restaurant owner’s son, goes to the gambling den that ensnared the boy and drains it dry with his mad gambling skills.)
Obviously, Jin could be a great man if only people let him. And it looks like YZ will be the one to help him soar like an eagle.
