Another wild twist in the “ninja weapons ban” story is that when the law was being debated in Parliament, a Lord actually asked “Can I still keep my swordstick?”

What are your models like? Is it just the trains and tracks or do you build little buildings and landscapes around them and everything?
Ah, I do have some buildings! I'm hoping to do a proper layout someday, with landscapes and buildings and other infrastructure for my little steam locomotives to interact with. Maybe when my dad retires we'll do one together since he'll have a lot of time on his hands.
You can get some pretty funny stuff. There's an HO scale KFC, for example:

tagged by @beliefs... I was supposed to shuffle my on repeat playlist and list the first 10 songs... but I don't use spotify (mostly I listen to youtube or amazon music, plus the occasional downloaded stuff in itunes). so I'm going to fake it and give my off-the-top list of what I think I've been listening to the most lately.
spoiler: I listen to the same things over and over again.

I do know of one recent now-it’s-public-domain work that isn’t a horror movie— there was a modernized Hardy Boys novel published by a fan last year.
Whoops, just seeing this now
Cool! It's good to see some "bigger" uses of the public domain than straight-to-Tubi slasher films get out there quickly

Isn’t it kind of weird that “wonk” and “wank” were both popular online slang for someone highly fixated on something in the late 2000s (“policy wonk” vs “alternate history wank”) but from completely different angles and the rude term was one letter off from the term that was in newspapers and magazines?
That is really weird. Imagine a policy wonk with a policy fetish

Back around 2008-ish, a friend of mine on an astronomy forum mentioned that there had then-recently been either a TV pilot or just an unfilmed script for a show about fictional NASA scientists working at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory called “Beyond” that hadn’t been picked up. I’ve looked for more information ever since but never found anything. Can you help me, O Lost Media Guru?
I found an IMDB page for it but no video sadly, and only 23 ratings so I'm assuming it never came out. It's listed as a TV movie, so I guess a pilot that was never picked up? It looks like it was meant to air on Fox but I can't find anything saying it did.
"Newly appointed director of the JPL Laboratories, irascible but brilliant DR. MORRIS FITCH starts his new job off with a bang as he brainstorms a radical plan to deflect a pathogen-infected meteor currently on a collision path with the Earth…"
The writer, David Self, also wrote Road to Perdition and Thirteen Days, plus two horror movies, but this is his only TV credit. Apparently after Beyond was picked up, he was hired by Marvel (then starting to launch the MCU) to write the Captain America movie, along with ones for Deathlok and Namor, but his script was never used
Unfortunate that I couldn't find video or more information, but there's everything I could find. Other results were mainly references to the pilot being picked up, or list of credits while mentioning the writer. A Youtube search mainly pulls up unrelated shows (and car reviews?), sadly

You know, in terms of “things we considered unremarkable growing up that will be seen in a different light in the future”, it occurred to me that as circuses phase out animal acts, there are 90s/2000s films and TV episodes set at circuses that may someday get discussed as some of the last footage of American circus elephants/lions/etc.
I hadn't thought about this but wow, it will be hard to explain. Apparently Ringling Bros only dropped elephant acts in 2016 (though afaik they were way less popular then compared to the 90s) so we'll still have kids with memories of seeing them for a bit longer but having to explain that yeah, that was a real thing I witnessed as a kid, that existed alongside the Playstation 1 and Hey Arnold

Isn’t it “Health insurance BEFORE flying”? Like as a reference to the old insurance machines they used to have in airports for people afraid of flying?
Genius claims it's it's "health insurance, rip-off flying" but idk. Genius doesn't actually try to explain those lyrics, either

Serious mode: Are there actually any things about Dracula specific to the Universal version?
I don't think so, since the few new elements were taken from earlier adaptions for theater & film that would be public domain. Unlike their Frankenstein movie which did originate most elements common to pop culture depictions of the story, down to the character's appearance, but those have been appropriated and reused for ages without Universal doing anything about it afaik

It’s earlier than you were talking about, but there was a really awful made for TV movie about the eruption of Mount St. Helens made one year later and surprisingly volcanologist David Johnston’s family were able to put up enough of a legal threat that they did change the name of the character based on him… to David *Jackson*. Clearly different!
Amazing. No one will ever know!

It’s not really all that “funny”, but in term of stories about fake world records, the first ascent of Cerro Torre in Patagonia is pretty wild.
